- Abstract
There is a current debate about the ecological validity of executive function (EF) tests. Consistent with the verisimilitude approach, this research proposes the Ballet Executive Scale (BES), a self-rating questionnaire that assimilates idiosyncratic executive behaviors of classical dance community. The BES was administrated to 149 adolescents, students of the Cuban Ballet School. Results present a Cronbach's alpha coefficient of 0.80 and a split-half Spearman-Brown coefficient r[subscript SB] = 0.81. An exploratory factor analysis describes a bifactorial pattern of EF dimensions, with a Self-Regulation component, which explains more than 40% of variance, and a Developmental component, which accounts for more than 20% of variance. The questionnaire's total scores fit linear regression models with two external criteria of academic records, confirming concurrent validity. These findings support the hypothesis that the internalization of specific contextual cultural meanings has a mediating influence in the development of EF. (Contains 1 table and 1 note.)

To conserve biodiversity, the Botanical Garden of Villa Clara (VCBG) promotes meaningful experiences and pleasure across an interpretative trail that culminates in an endemic area wich represents the xeromorphic scrubland on serpentines, an important Cuban ecosystem. Moreover, endangered specimens of native and endemic species are planted inside and outside the VCBG by members of different communities and target groups combining participatory techniques with ex situ conservation procedures. Thus enjoyment, pride, science and social responsibility allows them to have endangered plants, and even some fauna, in their daily lifes. For us, educators, that´s the key element to preserve our biodiversity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

INTRODUCTION In inflammatory respiratory diseases, the imbalance between proteases and endogenous protease inhibitors leads to an exacerbated activity of human neutrophil elastase (a protease that destroys the extracellular matrix and stimulates proinflammatory cytokine release). Elastase is considered a target in the search for therapeutic treatments for inflammatory respiratory diseases. Pulmonary surfactant is a promising product for this purpose, because in addition to its biophysical function, it has anti-inflammatory properties. OBJECTIVE Evaluate effect of the Cuban porcine pulmonary surfactant (Surfacen), the rCmPI-II elastase inhibitor, and the Surfacen/rCmPI-II combination on activated neutrophil elastase activity in vitro, and determine if Surfacen's interface property changes in the presence of the inhibitor. METHODS The anti-elastase effect of Surfacen, rCmPI-II and the Surfacen/rCmPI-II combination was evaluated in an in vitro model of activated neutrophils, previously purified from the blood of healthy subjects. The cells were stimulated with LPS/fMLP and were incubated with diff erent concentrations of Surfacen, rCmPI-II and the Surfacen/rCmPI-II combination. Elastase activity was measured. The interface property was determined on a Langmuir surface balance. RESULTS Surfacen at 10 mg/mL inhibited 71% of stimulated neutrophil elastase activity. rCmPI-II at 0.1 µM reduced 20% of elastase activity; at 200 µM--the maximum concentration evaluated--inhibition was 68%. Both products had a dosedependent effect. The Surfacen/inhibitor combination (0.5 mg/ mL/80 µM) did not aff ect the surfactant interface property or the inhibitory activity of rCmPI-II against human neutrophil elastase. CONCLUSIONS Surfacen and the rCmPI-II inhibitor have an anti-elastase effect on an activated neutrophil model. rCmPI-II does not aff ect Surfacen's interface property and, therefore, both can be evaluated for combined use in treating inflammatory lung diseases. The HIV/AIDS epidemic is an ongoing threat to public health. Its elimination requires greater efforts to broaden antiretroviral treatment coverage, availability and personalization. HIV drug resistance is currently a global problem due to its continuing increase in recent years, undermining efficacy of antiretroviral therapy. Pretreatment HIV drug-resistance surveillance is part of WHO's strategy for addressing antiretroviral drug resistance. This paper describes and analyzes pretreatment HIV drug-resistance surveillance in Cuba. It presents a chronology of HIV resistance studies in untreated patients, along with their results and programmatic actions related to first- and second-line treatment regimens. Cuba's incorporation into the Global HIV Drug Resistance Surveillance Laboratories Network and the advantages of having a WHO-designated laboratory in which to conduct periodic studies of HIV drug-resistance surveillance are described. HIV drug-resistance surveillance in Cuba is a necessary tool in HIV/ AIDS monitoring and control, as it obtains population-scale data used to inform programmatic decisions related to optimizing first- and second-line treatments for children and adults, as well as helping meet goals of eliminating HIV transmission. Forty-three years after it was founded, with billions of dollars invested, the global biotech industry is still not positioned as a mature low-risk sector for the international investor community. Despite the clear commercial success of a number of leading companies and overall growth of the industry's revenues, most biotech companies are not profi table and many fail to overcome the formidable barrier constituted by the high cost of the sector's research and development. However, over the last four years, visible signs of change have appeared, which could be harbingers of an approaching turning point in this trend. This article analyzes the historic background of the biotech industry's business models and corporate structures, as well as their impact on the industry's financial framework. It examines recent changes implemented by the sector's main actors--including young startups, venture capital funds and big pharma companies--to mitigate financial risk associated with development of new biotechnology products. Finally, it discusses the challenges and opportunities that these tendencies entail for Cuban biotechnology development and proposes adoption of business policies more tolerant of the fi nancial risk inherent in this sector, as a condition for attracting venture capital. INTRODUCTION Acute respiratory distress syndrome is a complex heterogeneous disorder with low incidence but high case fatality in children. Treatment with pulmonary surfactants is a possible option. Surfacen, a Cuban exogenous pulmonary surfactant, has been proven safe and effective in premature newborns with hyaline membrane disease, but evidence regarding its efficacy in older children is still inconclusive. OBJECTIVE Determine Surfacen’s efficacy in improving oxygenation and increasing survival in children with acute respiratory distress syndrome. METHODS A multicenter (five pediatric intensive care units in four provinces), open-label, controlled, randomized phase III clinical trial with two treatment groups was conducted from November 2009 through August 2013, with 19 girls and 23 boys aged 1 month to 18 years. The experimental group (20 patients) received conventional treatment (oxygenation and mechanical ventilation) plus intratracheal instillation of Surfacen (100 mg/4 mL) every eight hours for three days. The control group (22 patients) received only conventional treatment. The primary dependent outcome was patient vital status (alive or deceased) 28 days after study enrollment. Other variables and outcomes analyzed were age, sex, ARDS presentation, Kirby index (arterial oxygen tension over inspired oxygen fraction), oxygenation index, static lung compliance, transcutaneous oxygen saturation, radiographic course, mechanical ventilation time and length of stay in neonatal intensive care. Statistical tests used were the chi-square test and Fisher exact test. RESULTS On day 28, there was 80% survival in the experimental group versus 38.1% in the control group. There were significant differences between the experimental and the control group in Kirby index, oxygenation index, static lung compliance and radiographic course, all favoring the experimental group. For every 2.38 patients treated in total, there was one additional survivor in the experimental group. CONCLUSIONS When combined with conventional therapy in the regimen employed, Surfacen improves oxygenation and increases survival in children with ARDS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

INTRODUCTION Serological and molecular HIV-1 studies in Cuba have shown very low prevalence of seropositivity, but an increasing genetic diversity attributable to introduction of many HIV-1 variants from different areas, exchange of such variants among HIV-positive people with several coinciding routes of infection and other epidemio logic risk factors in the seropositive population. The high HIV-1 genetic variability observed in Cuba has possible implications for transmission and clinical progression. OBJECTIVE Study genetic variability for the HIV-1 env, gag and pol structural genes in Cuba; determine the prevalence of B and non-B subtypes according to epidemiologic and behavioral variables and determine whether a relationship exists between genetic variability and transmissibility, and between genetic variability and clinical dis ease progression in people living with HIV/AIDS. METHODS Using two molecular assays (heteroduplex mobility assay and nucleic acid sequencing), structural genes were characterized in 590 people with HIV-1 (480 men and 110 women), accounting for 3.4% of seropositive individuals in Cuba as of December 31, 2013. Nonrandom sampling, proportional to HIV prevalence by province, was conducted. Relationships between molecular results and viral factors, host characteristics, and patients’ clinical, epidemiologic and behavioral variables were studied for molecular epidemiology, trans mission, and progression analyses. RESULTS Molecular analysis of the three HIV-1 structural genes clas sified 297 samples as subtype B (50.3%), 269 as non-B subtypes (45.6%) and 24 were not typeable. Subtype B prevailed overall and in men, mainly in those who have sex with men. Non-B subtypes were prevalent in women and heterosexual men, showing multiple circulating variants and recombinant forms. Sexual transmission was the predominant form of infection for all. B and non-B subtypes were encountered throughout Cuba. No association was found between subtypes and transmission or clinical progression, although the pro portion of deaths was higher for subtype B. Among those who died during the study period, there were no differences between subtypes in the mean time from HIV or AIDS diagnosis to death. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that B and non-B HIV-1 sub types found in Cuba do not differ in transmissibility and in clinical dis ease progression. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The authors designed a risk-based approach to the selection of poultry flocks to be sampled in order to further improve the sensitivity of avian influenza (AI) active surveillance programme in Cuba. The study focused on the western region of Cuba, which harbours nearly 70% of national poultry holdings and comprise several wetlands where migratory waterfowl settle (migratory waterfowl settlements -- MWS). The model took into account the potential risk of commercial poultry farms in western Cuba contracting from migratory waterfowl of the orders Anseriformes and Charadriiformes through dispersion for pasturing of migratory birds around the MWS. We computed spatial risk index by geographical analysis with Python scripts in ESRI® ArcGIS 10 on data projected in the reference system NAD 1927--UTM17. Farms located closer to MWS had the highest values for the risk indicator pj and in total 31 farms were chosen for targeted surveillance during the risk period. The authors proposed to start active surveillance in the study area 3 weeks after the onset of Anseriformes migration, with additional sampling repeated twice in the same selected poultry farms at 15 days interval (Comin et al., 2012; EFSA, 2008) to cover the whole migration season. In this way, the antibody detectability would be favoured in case of either a posterior AI introduction or enhancement of a previous seroprevalence under the sensitivity level. The model identified the areas with higher risk for AIV introduction from MW, aiming at selecting poultry premises for the application of risk-based surveillance. Given the infrequency of HPAI introduction into domestic poultry populations and the relative paucity of occurrences of LPAI epidemics, the evaluation of the effectiveness of this approach would require its application for several migration seasons to allow the collection of sufficient reliable data.
