The present article is a reflection about the situation and perspectives of the left parties in Costa Rica, this has as a background the publication of my book ‘La crisis de la izquierda en Costa Rica’ (Porvenir, 1987), regarding its participation in the 2002 elections, understanding that for this political current there is an entirely different situation since the eighties of the last century. Unlike the book, here we considered that the crisis of the left is no longer a crisis of division but a crisis of life or death, related to a crisis of representativeness in which practically alt parties of the political spectrum are also immerse. The left crisis is, however, more dramatic because it was the first one, due to the fact that it is directly linked with the ideological matrix that fed its hopes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
