The article focuses on accounts of the Irish famine which appeared in travel guides and descriptive writings of Connemara, Ireland written from 1850 to 1860. The completion of the Great Midland Western Railway between Dublin and Galway, Ireland promoted a spate of advertising promoting British tourism to the area to enjoy scenic views, extended moors, and superior sport fishing. The author points out that the romantic and picturesque views of Connemara were a result of the area being ravaged by the famine and losing a large part of its population. Also discussed are the books "The Irish Tourist's Illustrated Handbook" and "Vacations in Ireland," and travel writers Thomas Cook, Anna Maria Hall and Samuel Carter Hall.
