The article discusses the history of irrigation efforts in southwestern Colorado between 1884 to 1923. The article examines two ledgers from Madrid Ditch No. 2 in an attempt to document the efforts of workers to provide water for homes, farms, and fields. The author states that the ledgers, which are transcribed in the article, reveal the conduct, work, and water use of the workers. According to the author, the ledgers were written in Spanish by the mayordomos, also known as ditch bosses, and included rules, regulations, and acequia bylaws. The article also examines water measurement, apportionment, and how water was exchanged and sold. It also discusses how Hispanic and white males and Hispanic and Native American females worked together to operate the ditch.
