Teacher´s beliefs and conceptions of teaching English are an important area for the professional development path of primary teachers. Giving primary teachers opportunities to grow professionally and support their learning belongs to the wide variety of practices that can be implemented to foster early education today. To do that, the Colombian government has implemented different initiatives; however, through the exploration of literature, primary public-school teachers need more professional development opportunities to fulfill the objectives stated by the Ministry of National Education. This is why, the present study aims to investigate the perceptions and attitudes of elementary rural teachers involved in the incorporation of English in their teaching practices. A total of ten teachers were selected to be involved during a semester that lasts the implementation of the project. Through qualitative research under the exploratory paradigm, we identified frustration, motivation, and lack of expertise as the main perceptions that interfere the teaching practices of the selected population. Findings suggest that professional development strategies should be incorporated as an eventual strategy to foster the teaching practices in the classroom.

In this study we use data from the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) to investigate the effect of teachers' motivation on students' scientific literacy and motivation in Colombia. These relationships are explored using a multilevel modeling framework and through the lens of Self-Determination Theory. Although difficulties in achieving education quality in developing and emerging economies are commonly attributed to teacher motivation issues, and important policy measures are implemented based on this assumption, this topic remains largely empirically unexplored. The purpose of the study is to contribute to fill this gap and provide empirically based insights for a broader and more informed dialogue regarding the effect of motivation in the development of scientific literacy, and to the design and implementation of evidence-based policies, instructional practices, and interventions. In this analysis, we did not find a significant relationship between teacher motivation and either students' scientific literacy or motivation. However, students' interest in science and sense of self-efficacy were significantly associated with their own achievement. The results also show that teacher-directed instruction is the strongest predictor of scientific literacy as opposed to inquiry-based teaching. However, inquiry-based teaching was found to be a positive predictor of increased students' motivation.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, educational institutions in Colombia implemented technology-mediated distance education models. However, inequities in access were evident. In Colombia, the digital divide is related to the geography, socioeconomic class, and ethnicity. The Ministry of National Education and the country's educational communities joined efforts to build bridges and continue educating the population despite the difficulties. This exploratory qualitative research project was developed to reflect upon the effects of the pandemic on Colombian education, focussing upon the digital divide and the strategies implemented to reduce it. According to this study, the best way to bridge the digital divide is to mix older communication modalities and forms with new technology. During COVID-19, the main strategies used in Colombia involved the development of work guides or pamphlets; educational content on radio, television, and social media; digital educational resources accessible online; and the cell phone for direct contact. It is concluded that innovative bridges can be built to reduce the digital gap but only by embracing mediums of communication from across history.

In this paper, a teacher-educator and two students of a B.A. program in foreign language teaching (English and French) of a public university in Colombia discuss our pedagogical experiences in a research seedbed. First, we present the conceptualizations underlying our analysis: research seedbeds, undergraduate research education, and curriculum as a process. Second, we describe our contextual background. Third, we analyze our experiences using three themes: creating and recreating curriculum, negotiating the official and non-official curriculum, and taking positions as teacher-researchers. We conclude that research seedbeds can broaden the pedagogical repertoire of undergraduate research education in foreign language programs and that it becomes necessary to conduct studies in this area in Colombia.

This article describes the implementation of digital storytelling in an English language class of eleventh graders at a private school in Mosquera, Colombia. It is a descriptive qualitative study, carried out for about six months by using digital tools to foster language production in the language learners. The implementation contained digital storytelling as a pedagogical strategy for developing the writing literacy practice. The personal stories and media literacy allowed the participants to combine both narratives and digital elements when writing in English in a collaborative work-group in which they co-constructed their stories. The data collected was analyzed by using ATLAS ti. Open questions looked for information about the writing process and the digital tools implemented when creating the stories. The findings revealed that the participants developed writing and speaking manners while assuming different roles. In addition, the digitalization of stories strengthened their multi-literacies. The participants' recordings of their voices helped them improve their oral production without worrying about their classmates' opinion. Finally, negotiation in the group roles, as writer, designer and media creator, played an important role when working in groups.

This article presents an analysis of contradictions expressed by pre-service mathematics teachers when performing two modeling tasks using their own technological devices. The study is based on theoretical aspects of contradictions in the fields of expansive learning and modeling with digital technologies. Technology and modeling tasks were designed and tested with 14 participants in a mathematical modeling course offered to pre-service teachers in a Colombian university. Linguistic cues were used to carry out a thematic analysis for identifying contradictions in discursive manifestations. The results show how specific contradictions in modeling processes with technology are manifested by students and the kind of transformations they promote, as well as the changes that occur in how tasks are performed, and how students develop an idea of technology that goes beyond its traditional conception as a tool. The findings show the influence of other activity systems on the development of these processes and the need for future studies in learning research.

This study provides an overview and exploration of 23 national and international reflective teaching research reports. The purpose of this study is to determine the extent that reflective teaching can become a strategy for language teaching professional development. Based on content analysis four main topics emerged: (a) reflective teaching as an approach to enhance the language profession; (b) impact on teachers' performance; (c) support, time, and effort; and (d) in-service professional development. Conclusions indicated that reflective teaching is an alternative to raise awareness about English language teaching, and as a means to encourage teachers to open their minds, update their teaching methodologies, and make adjustments to their lessons.

This case study reports the analysis of the induction as a socialization process of a Colombian novice teacher of English. Since critical approaches to socialization highlight the role of novice teachers in critical school transformation during their induction stage, this study aims to disclose the teacher's possibilities of becoming an agent of change. The data collection procedures included interviews, class observations and document analysis. The findings revealed that the teacher's socialization was not a gradual transition and his possibilities to contribute to school transformation differed in accordance with the interplay among his professional interests and school factors.

Academic training in research is fundamental in the quality of higher education and within this context, technological mediation becomes pivotal to reach student-centered learning objectives in any moment and at any time. The findings of a study, the purpose of which has been to evaluate the results of the formative research of two groups of students that have interacted in learning environments (E-learning and U-learning), are presented. The research follows a quasi-experimental study with a design of chronological series and multiple treatment, framed in three stages that were defined as referencing, systematization, and analysis. The sample consisted of 189 fourth-year students of the Early Childhood Education degree, at El Bosque University in Bogotá, Colombia. The results reveal that U-learning environments strengthen and consolidate formative research as an ongoing process for undertaking educational research through personalization, adaptation, and situational learning, marking meaningful differences with respect to E-learning environments during the systematization stage. The intervention with U-learning environments has revealed challenges and needs in the academic curriculum such as strengthening the link between evaluation and educational research in the field of professional practice, as well as the incorporation of technology with the purpose of making it something natural, adaptable, and interoperable, that students are able to use it without even thinking about it.

Background: To describe the epidemiology and clinical characteristics of migraine and the status of treatment in Colombia. Additionally, the use of health resources by patients was measured. Methods: This was a non-interventional, retrospective, descriptive study conducted in one Colombian Health Management Organization (HMO) from 2018 to 2022 with a follow-up period of 5 years. Migraine patients were identified using the International Code Disease 10th version G43, and the diagnosis was confirmed by a neurologist. The first recorded migraine diagnosis was defined as the index date. Medical records, claim databases and other electronic databases from the HMO were used to determine the clinical characteristics, treatments, and health care services. Results: A total of 89,227 patients were included in the study. The mean follow-up period was 3.7 years (standard deviation 1.2). Most of them were women (84.9%). Many patients were first seen by a general practitioner (82.6%), and only 8.9% were first seen by a neurologist. The prevalence of migraine during follow-up was between 1.69 and 2.42 patients in 100 HMO affiliates in 2020, the year with the highest prevalence (2.42 [95% CI 2.41–2.44]), and the incidence ranged from 0.032 to 1.72 per 100 patient-year at risk of developing migraine. Hypertension (21.3%), arrythmia (4.1%) and structural heart disease (3.4%) were the most common cardiovascular diseases. The annual mean number of outpatient consultations in 2018 was 1.43 consultations per patient, which decreased to 0.68 in 2022. The most frequent treatments for acute events were nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) (range 37-42%) in monotherapy, combinations of analgesics (range 14-35%), and corticosteroids (range 10-15%). Triptans were used in 4% of patients in the first medication record, reaching a maximum of 16% of patients. Among preventive treatments, beta-blockers (24-49%) and antiepileptics (29-41%) were the most common. Conclusion: The prevalence of migraine in Colombia according to health electronic databases was lower than that reported in previous studies conducted in the country. The treatment patterns for acute and preventive treatment of migraine follow the recommendations of different guidelines. Cardiovascular disease is relevant for the management of migraine. As the Hass avocado crop expands exponentially in Colombia, concern about its increasing water use is on the rise. This research aimed to develop IS-SAR, a free-access web application to schedule irrigation for Valle del Cauca's Hass growers. We calibrated the water cloud (WCM) and artificial neural network (ANN) models using field data measurements from Hass avocado orchard plots in Valle del Cauca (Colombia) and Sentinel 1 (S1) satellite imagery measurements and evaluated their performance computing the root-mean-square error (RMSE) and Pearson correlation coefficient (r ). IS-SAR estimates the surface soil water content from the most recent S1 image, becomes it in water depth, and recommends to users apply irrigation according to allowable depletion limits, computed from a spatially distributed θ at field capacity and permanent wilting point obtained from a soil database of the study area. Our results indicate that the surface soil water content was retrieved with a better performance by the ANN (RMSE = 0.05 m3 m−3, r = 0.74 ), compared with the WCM (RMSE = 0.06 m3 m−3, r = 0.47 ). IS-SAR simulations in validation orchard plots result in irrigation events of up to 107 L tree−1 for 3.4 h. The IS-SAR web application provides near-real-time irrigation information to assist Hass avocado growers in designing better irrigation routines and improving the regional understanding of water crop consumption. Introduction: Although several guidelines recommend that patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) be treated with angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors/angiotensin II receptor blockers (ACEIs/ARBs) or angiotensin receptor-neprilysin inhibitors (ARNIs), beta-blockers, mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists (MRAs), and sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitor (SGLT2i), there are still several gaps in their prescription and dosage in Colombia. This study aimed to describe the use patterns of HFrEF treatments in the Colombian Heart Failure Registry (RECOLFACA). Methods: Patients with HFrEF enrolled in RECOLFACA during 2017–2019 were included. Heart failure (HF) medication prescription and daily dose were assessed using absolute numbers and proportions. Therapeutic schemes of patients treated by internal medicine specialists were compared with those treated by cardiologists. Results: Out of 2,528 patients in the registry, 1,384 (54.7%) had HFrEF. Among those individuals, 88.9% were prescribed beta-blockers, 72.3% with ACEI/ARBs, 67.9% with MRAs, and 13.1% with ARNIs. Moreover, less than a third of the total patients reached the target doses recommended by the European HF guidelines. No significant differences in the therapeutic schemes or target doses were observed between patients treated by internal medicine specialists or cardiologists. Conclusion: Prescription rates and target dose achievement are suboptimal in Colombia. Nevertheless, RECOLFACA had one of the highest prescription rates of beta-blockers and MRAs compared to some of the most recent HF registries. However, ARNIs remain underprescribed. Background: African ancestry is a known factor associated with the presentation and aggressiveness of prostate cancer (PC). Hispanic/Latino populations exhibit varying degrees of genetic admixture across Latin American countries, leading to diverse levels of African ancestry. However, it remains unclear whether genetic ancestry plays a role in the aggressiveness of PC in Hispanic/Latino patients. We explored the associations between genetic ancestry and the clinicopathological data in Hispanic/Latino PC patients from Colombia. Patients and methods: We estimated the European, Indigenous and African genetic ancestry, of 230 Colombian patients with localized/regionally advanced PC through a validated panel for genotypification of 106 Ancestry Informative Markers. We examined the associations of the genetic ancestry components with the Gleason Grade Groups (GG) and the clinicopathological characteristics. Results: No association was observed between the genetic ancestry with the biochemical recurrence or Gleason GG; however, in a two groups comparison, there were statistically significant differences between GG3 and GG4/GG5 for European ancestry, with a higher mean ancestry proportion in GG4/GG5. A lower risk of being diagnosed at an advanced age was observed for patients with high African ancestry than those with low African ancestry patients (OR: 0.96, CI: 0.92-0.99, p=0.03). Conclusion: Our findings revealed an increased risk of presentation of PC at an earlier age in patients with higher African ancestry compared to patients with lower African ancestry in our Hispanic/Latino patients. This paper presents a methodology to detect the coastal erosion and progradation effects in the 'Atrato River' delta, located in the Gulf of Urabá in Colombia, using SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) images. Erosion is the physical–mechanical loss of the soil that affects its functions and ecosystem services while producing a reduction in its productive capacity. Progradation is the deposition of layers in the basinward direction while moving coastward. Other studies have investigated these two phenomena using optical images, encountering difficulties due to the persistent presence of clouds in this region. In order to avoid the cloud effects, in this study, we used 16 Sentinel 1 SAR images with two different polarizations between 2016 and 2023. First, each image was rescaled from 0 to 255, then the image was despeckled by a deep learning (DL) model. Afterwards, a single RGB image was composed with the filtered polarizations. Next, a classifier with 99% accuracy based on Otsu's method was used to determine whether each pixel was water or not. Then, the classified image was registered to a reference one using Oriented FAST and Rotated BRIEF (ORB) descriptor. Finally, a multitemporal analysis was performed by comparing every image to the previous one to identify the studied phenomena, calculating areas. Also, all images were integrated to obtain a heatmap that showed the overall changes across eight years (2016–2023) in a single image. The multitemporal analysis performed found that the newly created mouth is the most active area for these processes, coinciding with other studies. In addition, a comparison of these findings with the Oceanic Niño Index (ONI) showed a relative delayed coupling to the erosion process and a coupling of progradation with dry and wet seasons. Background: Heart transplantation is the therapy of choice in patients with advanced heart failure refractory to other medical or surgical management. However, heart transplants are associated with complications that increase posttransplant morbidity and mortality. Infections are one of the most important complications after this procedure. Therefore, infections in the first year after heart transplantation were evaluated. Methods: A retrospective cohort study of infections after heart transplants was conducted in a teaching hospital in Colombia between 2011 and 2019. Patients registered in the institutional heart transplant database (RETRAC) were included in the study. Microbiological isolates and infectious serological data were matched with the identities of heart transplant recipients and data from clinical records of individuals registered in the RETRAC were analyzed. The cumulative incidences of events according to the type of microorganism isolated were estimated using Kaplan–Meier survival analyses. Results: Seventy‐nine patients were included in the study. Median age was 49 years (37.4–56.3), and 26.58% of patients were women. Eighty‐seven infections were documented, of which 55.17% (48) were bacterial, 22.99% (20) were viral, and 12.64% (11) were fungal. Bacterial infections predominated in the first month. In the first year, infections caused 38.96% of hospital admissions and were the second cause of death after heart transplants (25.0%). Conclusion: Posttransplant infections in the first year of follow‐up were frequent. Bacterial infections predominated in the early posttransplant period. Infections, mainly bacterial, were the second most common cause of death and the most common cause of hospitalization in the first year after heart transplantation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a hydrological assessment of the 113,981 km2 Meta River basin in Colombia using 13 global climate models to predict water yield for 2050 under two CMIP6 scenarios, SSP 4.5 and SSP 8.5. Despite mixed performance across subbasins, the model was notably effective in the upper Meta River subbasin. This study predicts an overall increase in the basin's annual water yield due to increased precipitation, especially in flatter regions. Under the SSP 4.5, the Meta River basin's water flow is expected to rise from 5141.6 m3/s to 6397.5 m3/s, and to 6101.5 m3/s under the SSP 8.5 scenario, marking 24% and 19% increases in water yield, respectively. Conversely, the upper Meta River subbasin may experience a slight decrease in water yield, while the upper Casanare River subbasin is predicted to see significant increases. The South Cravo River subbasin, however, is expected to face a considerable decline in water yield, indicating potential water scarcity. This study represents a pioneering large-scale application of the InVEST–AWY model in Colombia using CMIP6 global climate models with an integrated approach to produce predictions of future water yields. Introduction: Arterial hypertension represents one of the main comorbidities observed in patients with heart failure (HF) and one of the main risk factors for its development. Despite this, studies assessing this hypertensive etiology are scarce in Latin America. Our objective was to analyze the prevalence of HF of hypertensive etiology and evaluate its prognosis in patients enrolled in the Colombian Heart Failure Registry (RECOLFACA by its Spanish acronym). Methods: RECOLFACA recruited adult patients diagnosed with HF in 60 centers in Colombia between 2017 and 2019. The primary outcome was all-cause mortality. A Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to assess factors associated with primary outcomes in patients with hypertensive HF. A p value <0.05 was considered significant. All statistical tests were two-tailed. Results: Out of the total number of patients evaluated in RECOLFACA (n = 2,514), 804 had a diagnosis of HF with hypertensive etiology (31.9%). These patients were less frequently males and had a significantly older age and lower prevalence of comorbidities than those with HF of other etiologies. Additionally, patients with hypertensive HF had a higher prevalence of HF with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) (34.1% vs. 28.3%; p = 0.004). Finally, type 2 diabetes mellitus, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease diagnosis, and NYHA class IV were classified as independent mortality risk factors. Conclusions: Hypertensive HF represents about one-third of the total number of patients with HF in RECOLFACA. Compared with HF of other etiologies, it presents a differential clinical profile – older age and a higher prevalence of HFpEF. RECOLFACA has become a useful tool to characterize patients with HF in Colombia, with which it has been possible to carry out a more specific search and reach the diagnosis of this pathology in our population, and it has served as an example to stimulate registries of patients with HF in other countries in the region. Tardigrades, with over 1450 species, are important organisms in ecological understanding and are valuable biological models (e.g., due to their extremotolerant capabilities). While their biodiversity is better known in Europe and North America, Central and South America have only recently started making significant contributions. Through a comprehensive review of scientific literature, biological collections, web portal consultations, and the addition of new records, this study clarifies the current knowledge of tardigrade biodiversity in Colombia. Past research started in the early 20th century, but most data are unreliable due to information gaps and the absence of specimens in biological collections. The last decade has witnessed a resurgence in tardigrade research in Colombia, leading to new species descriptions and a more robust understanding of their biodiversity. Nevertheless, the majority of the territory remains unexplored. A total of 43 known species from our analysis are present in Colombia: 26 records accepted by the literature and 17 questioned in the literature but representing distinct taxa surely present in Colombia. Other species records are considered doubtful. Our study recommends considering mostly scientific records based on verifiable material deposited in scientific collections (highlighting their importance in studying and safeguarding biodiversity) and encourages future researchers to contribute while adhering to legal requirements. This article provides an overview of the advances, challenges, and prospects of the sustainable use of capybaras in Colombia. It discusses the historical use of capybaras in the country and the regulatory stages that have been implemented. The article highlights the challenges faced in implementing management plans, including the low technical capacity of environmental authorities and the need for political will to define a global harvesting quota. Pilot trials have been conducted to promote good practices and conservation of capybaras and their habitat. The article also explores the potential for sustainable capybara use in specific regions of Colombia and the importance of effective monitoring and control of capybara commercial hunting for sustainable use and conservation. Colombia aims to eliminate malaria by 2030 but remains one of the highest burden countries in the Americas. Plasmodium vivax contributes half of all malaria cases, with its control challenged by relapsing parasitaemia, drug resistance and cross-border spread. Using 64 Colombian P. vivax genomes collected between 2013 and 2017, we explored diversity and selection in two major foci of transmission: Chocó and Córdoba. Open-access data from other countries were used for comparative assessment of drug resistance candidates and to assess cross-border spread. Across Colombia, polyclonal infections were infrequent (12%), and infection connectivity was relatively high (median IBD = 5%), consistent with low endemicity. Chocó exhibited a higher frequency of polyclonal infections (23%) than Córdoba (7%), although the difference was not significant (P = 0.300). Most Colombian infections carried double pvdhfr (95%) and single pvdhps (71%) mutants, but other drug resistance mutations were less prevalent (< 10%). There was no evidence of selection at the pvaat1 gene, whose P. falciparum orthologue has recently been implicated in chloroquine resistance. Global population comparisons identified other putative adaptations. Within the Americas, low-level connectivity was observed between Colombia and Peru, highlighting potential for cross-border spread. How do legislators use social media to cultivate their constituencies in large multimember electoral districts? Colombia's Senate nationwide district offers a suitable case to examine how lawmakers, through their behaviour on Twitter, geographically target their audiences. We employ microblog user geolocation methods which infer locations using textual content in order to identify where Colombian senators' Twitter 'home' is. We find that senators' location targeting on Twitter largely mirrors the geographical distribution of their votes. Deviations from that pattern mostly stem from their vulnerability to intraparty competition and the nature of their parties' organisation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ultra‐processed foods (UPFs) are associated with deterioration in dietary quality and the development of chronic diseases. The NOVA score, developed in Brazil to assess UPF consumption quickly and inexpensively, is adapted and validated here using a sample of 203 young women from Medellín, Colombia. Food consumption was evaluated using 24‐hour dietary recall and with the NOVA‐UPF score. Food items were classified using the NOVA categories. The energy consumed from UPFs and its percentage of the total energy consumed was estimated. The association between the NOVA‐UPF score and the percentage of energy from UPF (%UPF/E) was evaluated. Both variables were categorized into quintiles and concordance was estimated using prevalence and bias‐adjusted kappa (PABAK). A regression model was used to assess the association between the NOVA‐UPF score and critical nutrients. The mean NOVA‐UPF score among study participants was 4.5, with 27% of the total energy they consumed coming from UPFs. There was a positive, linear association between the NOVA‐UPF score and %UPF/E (p < 0.001) and substantial agreement (PABAK = 0.75) in the classification of participants between UPF energy quintiles and NOVA‐UPF score quintiles. The NOVA‐UPF score was positively and significantly associated with sodium, total fat, and saturated fat intake. During adolescence, many young people gain greater food choice agency but also become increasingly exposed and susceptible to environmental pressures that influence their food choices. This coincides with increased nutritional needs, especially for girls. In urban Colombia, adolescent diets are often high in undesirable foods and low in nutritious foods, contributing to overweight and micronutrient deficiencies. This study aimed to explore the potential of improving diet quality using food‐based recommendations (FBRs) within the parameters of local food systems and adolescents' existing dietary patterns to inform context‐specific programmatic responses to malnutrition. We applied linear programming analysis to dietary data from 13‐ to 20‐year‐old girls in Medellin to identify problem nutrients, local micronutrient sources, and promising FBRs. Iron and, to a lesser extent, calcium targets were difficult to meet using optimized diets based on local foods, especially for 13‐ to 17‐year‐olds. High habitual consumption of foods with excessive salt, fat, or sugar provided >5% of micronutrients in optimized diets. Otherwise, significant micronutrient sources included legumes, meat, dairy, bread, potatoes, and fruit. FBRs met targets for 10 micronutrients but only 32%–39% recommended nutrient intake for iron. FBRs, including occasionally consumed foods and supplements, met all intake targets for less cost, indicating a need to increase access to nutrient‐dense products. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Adolescent and young women face grave nutrition challenges, but limited evidence exists on solutions to improve their diets. Action‐research was done over 3 years (2020–2022) in secondary cities of Colombia (Medellin) and Vietnam (Thai Nguyen) to identify nutrient deficits in adolescent and young women diets; elaborate food‐based recommendations to improve their nutritional status using Optifood linear programming; and engage respondents in incorporating suggested recommendations to their diet using a Social Innovation Challenge approach. A total of 1001 respondents were interviewed in Vietnam, 793 in Colombia. The probability of nutrient inadequacy in both locations was highest for iron and calcium, followed by the risk of deficiency for several other vitamins and minerals. Social Innovation Challenge teams (11 in Vietnam, 9 in Colombia) were created and supported in developing solutions to improve diets and tackle those deficiencies. Awards and resources were transferred to the most promising solutions to enable their implementation. Pre/post measurements of the interventions' impact using the Global Diet Quality Score as outcome metric showed significant improvement in the diets of Challenge participants. Introduction: The main objective of heart transplantation is to improve the quality of life and survival of patients with advanced heart failure. Few countries in Latin America have a national registry system for solid organ transplants, including hearts. In the case of Colombia, each institution manages its own statistics. Objective: To describe the evolution of heart transplants performed in Colombia since their inception, as part of the strategy for the implementation of a national heart transplant registry. Materials and methods: Descriptive study of heart transplants performed in Colombian institutions that have performed heart transplants at any time, from January 01, 1985 to December 31, 2021. The information was collected in an electronic format through the chapter of Heart Failure, Heart Transplantation and Pulmonary Hypertension of the Colombian Society of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery. Results: We identified 10 institutions that have performed at least one heart transplant procedure over a 36-year period (1985 to 2021), for a total of 1,451 heart transplants. Of these procedures, 1,327 (91%) were performed in the adult population, 124 (9%) in the pediatric population, and 80% in the male population. On the other hand, 26 combined heart transplants (23 heart/kidney and 3 heart/lung) and 16 heart retransplants have been performed. Conclusion: The number of heart transplants performed in Colombia is increasing. Despite the economic, geographical, logistical and donor availability difficulties, among many others, the transplant institutions of Colombia, together with the National Institute of Health, continue to work to achieve better and greater health coverage for the population with advanced heart failure that requires heart transplantation and for patients who are taken for heart transplantation. In response to the difficult social, economic and political problems that Colombia faces, such as inequality, discrimination, weak civil society--fuelled by illegality and drug trafficking--the Colombian Ministry of Education has embarked on an ambitious citizenship education program, with the hope of strengthening the role of education by establishing alternative solutions. This innovative program attempts to counteract Colombians' recourse to violence as a means of solving the country's endemic problems by developing the competencies of students, teachers and other participants in education. The competencies include sound reasoning, care for others, communication skills, reflection on action, knowledge and active participation in classroom, school and community matters. This six-and-a-half-year-old project has started to create an educational system that takes into account many of the elements and relationships fundamental to the socio-political and moral behaviour of all involved. The paper indicates the horizons that this program opens up and discusses some of the problematic aspects that still need to be addressed for the program to be sustainable. As the world’s population lives longer and longer and has more cardiovascular risk factors, there is a greater prevalence of cardiovascular disease, including heart failure. Advances in medical knowledge, specifically in molecular, physiological and clinical fields, provide new and improved pharmacological treatments, cardiac devices and surgical procedures today which have optimized this condition’s prognosis. The available surgical procedures for treating heart disease include heart transplantation, which is useful for patients with advanced disease or disease which is refractory to the ordered and implemented interventions. The world’s first heart transplant was performed in 1967, and Colombia’s first in 1985. As of 2021, more than 1,400 heart transplants had been performed in this country. This procedure seeks to improve the quality of life and survival of patients who need it. This paper presents the results of one of the hydrological models, the InVEST "Annual Water Yield" (InVEST–AWY), applied to the Meta River basin in Colombia, which covers an area of 113,981 km². The study evaluates the performance of the model in different subbasins of the Meta River basin. The model's accuracy was assessed using different statistical measures, including Nash–Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE) coefficient, Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), correlation coefficients for the calibration (rcal) and validation (rval) periods. The overall performance of the model in the Meta River basin is relatively poor as indicated by the low NSE value of 0.07 and high RMSE value of 1071.61. In addition, the model explains only a 7% of the variance in the observed data. The sensitivity analysis revealed that a 30% reduction in crop coefficient (Kc) values would result in a 10.7% decrease in water yield. The model estimated, for example, the annual average water yield of the river in 2018 as 1.98 × 1011 m3/year or 6273.4 m3/s, which is 1.3% lower than the reported value. The upper Meta River subbasin shows the highest NSE value (0.49), indicating a good result between observed and simulated water discharge. In contrast, the South Cravo River subbasin shows a negative NSE value of −1.29, indicating poor model performance. The Yucao River subbasin and the upper Casanare River subbasin also show lower NSE values compared to the upper Meta River subbasin, indicating less accurate model performance in these subbasins. The correlation coefficients in calibration (rcal) and validation (rval) for the upper Meta River, Yucao River, South Cravo River, and upper Casanare River subbasins were 0.79 and 0.83, 0.4 and 0.22, 0.5 and −0.25, and 0 and 0.18, respectively. These results provide useful insights into the limitations for the proper use of the InVEST–AWY model in Colombia. This study is the first to use the InVEST–AWY model on a large scale in the territory of Colombia, allowing to evaluate its effectiveness in hydrological modeling for water management. Due to the problems of instability on the slopes located along the road that connects the city of Tunja with the municipalities of Jenesano, Tibaná, Chinavita, Garagoa, and Guateque, this study focused on estimating the threat of landslides triggered by precipitation and seismic activity in the aforementioned road corridor. For this purpose, a model was used that considered the topography, geology, geotechnical parameters, and variables in terms of historical rainfall, which sometimes exceeded the failure thresholds defined for the area. Similarly, reliability techniques and the first order second moment probabilistic method (FOSM) were applied, which allowed the probability of failure due to seismic activity in saturated and unsaturated conditions for the calculation of the annual total failure probability to be determined. Reducing inequalities in income and health, within and between countries, is a global priority for the WHO. This study seeks to examine income inequality as a predictor of life expectancy in Colombia. To achieve this, a cross-sectional panel data model was developed using the DANE’s Quality of Life Survey. The predictor variables of life expectancy were the Gini coefficient, GDP per capita and, in a novel way, monetary poverty, between 2012 and 2019. The results indicate that these variables have a significant impact on life expectancy, while no significant impact on social mobility was found. The objective of this research article is to conduct the identification of the possible changes and continuities presented in the dynamics and the Official Development Assistance (ODA) received by Colombia from the United States of America and the European Union, after the signing of the Peace Agreement between the government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia - People's Army (FARC-EP). A qualitative case study methodology is used by consulting databases and information from official sources on ODA projects granted to Colombia. The period 2012-2021 was set at four years prior to the signing of the agreement and five years after it. Background: Some reports suggest there are differences in health needs between the population affiliated to the subsidized health insurance scheme (SS) and those affiliated to the contributory health insurance scheme (CS) in Colombia. The objective of this study was to identify the epidemiological profile of the population affiliated to the SS in Colombia and to compare the main epidemiological features of the SS to the CS. Methods: Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) methodology, the search was carried out from 1993, with no other restriction. The information was synthesized into five categories according to the most important risk populations. We estimated combined incidences from epidemiological surveillance data, prevalence ratio, and other measures to estimate the difference between the studied groups. A 95% confidence interval was considered. A random effects model was used weighted by the inverse of the variance of the cumulative incidence calculated for each disease. The risk of bias was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute's critical appraisal tools. Results: A total of 16,236 articles were identified; 14,972 were excluded after title and abstract screening, 725 articles were verified as full text, and finally 268 articles were included. The relative risk of non-communicable and communicable diseases was lower in the SS than in the CS (RR: 0.37 and 0.72, respectively, p-value < 0.05). However, the risk of presenting obstetric and maternal conditions in the SS versus the CS was RR 1.55 for frequent conditions during early childhood, and for other diseases it was RR 1.28 with a p-value of < 0.05. The use of health services was different by scheme, with less demand, access, and provision being found in health services in the SS. Conclusions: This study allowed us to conclude that there are differences in the incidence, prevalence, and use of health services between health affiliation schemes (SS and CS) in Colombia, thereby assisting in decision-making for stakeholders. Introduction and Objective: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) represents a group of metabolic abnormalities. It is currently a pandemic, and its prevalence is on the rise. MetS has a direct relationship with obesity, for this reason, bariatric and metabolic surgery has been proposed as a method to simultaneously control obesity and MetS. However, in Colombia the results of this intervention are unknown. This study aims to compare metabolic syndrome before and after bariatric surgery in a Colombian population. Methods: Retrospective cohort study conducted in a highly complex institution in Colombia, where comparing the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in patients who underwent bariatric surgery during a 1‐year follow‐up period, between January 2015 and December 2019. Of these patients, 48 underwent Roux‐en‐Y gastric bypass, and 32 underwent sleeve gastrectomy by laparoscopic technique. Results: A total of 80 patients were included, of which 67.5% were women and the mean age was 42.8 ± 12.9 years. The most frequent preprocedure comorbidities were arterial hypertension (36.2%), dyslipidemia (32.4%), and sleep apnea (20%). After bariatric surgery, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome decreased from 66.2% to 3.7% (p < 0.05). In addition, a reduction in the Homeostatic Model Assessment for Insulin Resistance score from 77.5% to 22.5% was observed during the follow‐up period. HbA1c, creatinine, and thyroid‐stimulating hormone, were the only parameters without significant changes. Conclusions: Metabolic and bariatric surgery is an effective treatment for weight reduction, with a high impact in reducing the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance in the short and medium term in the Colombian population. Social representations around the historical facts of the armed conflict are marked by a cognitive and mnemic bias, accompanied by forgetfulness and silences, and by processes of attribution of responsibility in which the guerrillas, especially the FARC-EP, are assumed as the main responsible and absolute enemy. This makes the responsibility of the other stakeholders (paramilitaries, security forces, and the State) invisible, by generating a convenient and induced oblivion, which is functional to the interests of certain social sectors that hold political, economic, and media power, which promote impunity and contribute to the maintenance of political violence in order to maintain their power. Aims: The aim was to determine the impact of a case management model on indicators of health service utilization, polypharmacy, quality of life and dependency of patients with multimorbidity, and family caregiver overload in a group of patients insured with two insurance companies in the city of Bogotá (Colombia). Design: This was a mixed methods study, which integrated a quantitative and qualitative component. Methods: The study was conducted between July 2019 and March 2020. A quantitative component is based on a pre‐experimental study with a single group and pre‐ and post‐test measurements. Patients with multimorbidity with a medium or high level of complexity were included in the study. A sample of 317 patients and their caregivers was estimated. Following the completion of the intervention, a descriptive study that explored the perspective of nurses, patients and caregivers was developed to better understand the process and results from their own words and experience. A total of 17 dyads of patients and caregivers were interviewed, as well as six nurse managers. The integration strategy was developed based on a comparison made from the perspective of multiple stakeholders. Results: The model's impact on quality of life, particularly in terms of social functioning and mental health, has been documented. Caregiver overload was reduced and an improvement in the adoption of the role was observed, aspects that converge with the experience of the dyads and the caregivers in the support and backing provided by the model. Conclusion: The intervention was structured in five modules: case detection, complexity screening, comprehensive assessment with various instruments, individualized care and follow‐up plan, and plan assessment. The nurse manager role is confirmed as that of a professional with the leadership capacity to articulate disciplines and actors, whilst also dealing with the day‐to‐day needs of people with complex health conditions. Impact A comprehensive and integrated approach to patients with multiple diseases in a health insurance context marked by access barriers and fragmentation of health services. The study provides quantitative and qualitative evidence of the benefits of the case management model in Colombia for patients with multiple diseases and their family caregivers, particularly in terms of the psychosocial dimensions of health‐related quality of life and dependence assessment. A significant impact on the caregiver role, as well as an improvement in perception and trust in the health system, was observed as a result of the overcoming of administrative barriers achieved by the nurse case manager. The findings are considered to be extremely useful for decision‐makers and insurers in developing a case management model focused on comprehensive and individualized care plans, as well as for individuals with multiple diseases and their caregivers. Background: One of the consequences of the presentation of reproductive failures in sows is the economic losses in production because it alters the estimated values of the volume of production, decreasing the productivity of the farm. Porcine circovirosis by porcine circovirus 2 (PCV2) has been associated with reproductive disorders, and porcine parvovirus (PVP) is one of the pathological agents most related to the presentation of reproductive failure in pigs. In Colombia, there are reports of the presence of PCV2 through molecular techniques, and PVP through serum tests; however, in the department of Tolima, the prevalence of these two viruses is unknown. Objective: In this study, the aim was to establish a report of the prevalence of viruses in five municipalities of the department of Tolima‐Colombia. Methods: Blood samples from 150 breeding sows of five municipalities in Tolima, Colombia, were obtained. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) was used to detect the PCV2 and PVP virus in the blood samples followed by PCR and sequencing of 16 PCR products of the amplification of the cap gene of PCV2. A phylogenetic tree was constructed to identify the genotype of the PCV2 virus. Results: The presence of PCV2d in sows was detected in 135 samples (90%), as well as the identification of PVP in 2.6% of the samples. In addition, the phylogenetic analysis showed that 16 isolates were the PCV2d2 genotype. Conclusion: PCV2d and PVP were found to coinfect the females, and the identification of variability in regions in the predicted amino acid sequence of the PCV2 capsid may be associated with virus pathogenicity. This research is oriented towards determining the size and energy potential of a system of biodigesters installed in six livestock production systems, which are in the provinces of Sumapaz and Ubaté, in Cundinamarca Department, Colombia. Thus, the existing animal species in the scenario are determined, since they will contribute organic waste to the biodigester; the number of animals is also determined, considering the herd movement, which would make it possible to determine the biomass generated daily with the purpose of establishing the sizing of the appropriate biodigester technology and to know the behavior of the energy parameters. Among the main results obtained, it was evidenced that the biomass generated daily was not considered for the dimensioning and establishment of the polyethylene tubular biodigesters. In addition, the biodigesters installed in the production systems at La Meseta and El Tibar are oversized by 4,8 and 1,6 times, respectively; aspect that evidences the need to increase the daily biomass generated, which is achievable by increasing of animals in the herd. The biodigesters installed in the production systems at Santa Bárbara, El Mirador, La Saucita and La Esperanza, demonstrate an under-sizing, with inferiority values of 2,9; 1,97; 1,49; 2,04 times. These results indicate that, in these scenarios, the total number of animals used for biomass production is greater than that required with respect to the installed biodigester or that the installed biodigesters cannot take advantage of the biomass generated daily.
