• Assesses if nine key non-G20 countries meet 2030 GHG targets with existing policies. • Only Colombia, Iran, Morocco and Ukraine will likely meet their targets. • Thailand and DRC within reach; Kazakhstan and Philippines will miss their targets. • Per capita emissions under existing policies increase by 8 % to over 40 %. • Need to strengthen climate action analysis outside G20 for Paris Agreement goals. This study compares greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions projections in 2030 under current policies and those under 2030 mitigation targets for nine key non-G20 countries, that collectively account for about 5 % of global total emissions today. These include the four largest non-G20 fossil CO 2 emitting Parties to the UN climate convention pre- Paris Agreement (Iran, Kazakhstan, Thailand and Ukraine) and one of the largest land-use GHG emitters in the world (Democratic Republic of the Congo). Other countries assessed include major economies in their respective regions (Chile, Colombia, Morocco and the Philippines). In addition to economy-wide GHG emissions projections, we also assessed the projected GHG emissions peak year and the progression of per capita GHG emissions up to 2030. Our GHG emissions projections are also compared with previous studies. On economy-wide GHG emissions, Colombia, Iran, Morocco, and Ukraine were projected to likely meet or significantly overachieve their unconditional 2030 targets with existing policies, while DRC and Thailand would come very close to their targets. Kazakhstan and the Philippines would need to strengthen their action to meet their targets, while Chile recently raised its 2030 target ambition. Only Colombia and Ukraine are projected to have peaked their emissions by 2030. Per capita GHG emissions excluding land-use under current policies were projected to increase in all countries from 2010 levels by 8 % to over 40 % depending on the country. While the impact of the COVID-19 crisis on 2030 emissions is highly uncertain, our assessment on the target achievement would not change for most countries when the emission reductions estimated for 2020 in the literature were assumed to remain in 2030. The findings of this study highlight the importance of enhanced and frequent progress-tracking of climate action of major emitters outside G20, as is currently done for G20 members, to ensure that the global collective progress will become aligned with the pathways toward Paris climate goals. This paper presents the mechanical design of a single axis solar tracking system, as well as the electronic design of a system that to record in real time the electric power delivered by the solar tracker and to evaluate its performance. The interface was developed in Labview and it compares the power supplied by the tracker with the power supplied by static solar panel of the same characteristics. The performance is initially simulated using Pv-Syst software, and later validated with the data obtained by the interface. As a result, the use of the solar tracker increases the power delivered by a minimum of 19%, and it can go as high as 47.84%, with an average in increase in power of 19.5% in the monthly energy production. This experimental result was compared with the simulation by Pv-Syst software and shows a difference of only 2.5%, thus validating the reliability of the simulation. Changing a logic switch threshold in the linear fit sulfur dioxide (LFSO2) algorithm improves the performance based on the evaluation of the NOAA operational atmospheric SO2 near-real-time (NRT) retrieval. The LFSO2 is used to create estimates from measurements made by the Suomi NPP (S-NPP) Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite (OMPS). We evaluate the LFSO2 and compare the results to those from a principal component analysis (PCA) offline algorithm. Twenty independent volcanic scenarios and one environmental disaster scenario spread over eight years are selected for this comparison. More than three months of Kilauea volcanic activity in 2018 are monitored and are included in this evaluation and comparison. We found that the operational LFSO2 retrievals at lower troposphere (TRL), mid-troposphere (TRM), and lower stratosphere (STL) exhibited a discontinuity and have a saturation-like relationship if compared with PCA results. Using the new retrieval logic, the discontinuity in LFSO2 retrievals and the saturation appearance in comparisons vanished and a close to a linear relationship with the matchup data from the PCA retrieval products is demonstrated. The minimum detectable values for all three SO2 layer products and the planetary boundary layer (PBL) products are estimated with the updated LFSO2 algorithm. Results for a volcanic cloud over Colombia for the updated LFSO2 for OMPS and a Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (DOAS) algorithm for the Tropospheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) measurements are also examined. Generally, the majority of the linear concentrating photovoltaic (LCPV) systems incorporated with active cooling systems use liquid water pump loop or conventional vapor compression refrigeration system. In this study, a new cooling system, so-called two-phase mechanical pumped loop (TMPL), is proposed to be used with LCPV system. The excess heat from photovoltaic (PV) cell is used to heat up water stored in a tank for residential purposes. The case study is Bogota in Colombia and we develop a dynamic simulation model for the LCPV-TMPL system. The design parameters of the TMPL system are the flow volumetric rate and saturation temperature of the refrigerant as well as the tube length of the condenser. Moreover, low global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants such as R1234yf and R1234ze(E) were evaluated, both showing the same performance compared to R134a. The results showed that the use of TMPL system to eliminate the generated heat of PV cell improves its temperature stability and efficiency. It also shows how the proposed model can be used to design the thermal/photovoltaic system for a local, showing also the expected performance before the system installation. In the case study region, the LCPV-TMPL system, using four PV cells with 5 m × 10 mm, produces power with an average monthly of 2 kW with a peak of 5 kW under average and peak monthly solar radiation of 400 W/m2 and 600 W/m2, respectively. The storage tank can heat up 2.2 m³ water per day from 8 °C to approximately 28 °C, in an average sense. This means that the LCPV-TMPL system could save 9000 kWh and 1900 kWh per year in electricity and thermal energies (water heating). This system can be used locally with low or medium solar radiation and cold weather. The electrical sector in the Caribbean region of Colombia is currently facing problems that affect its reliability. Many thermo-electric plants are required to fill the gap and ensure energy supply. This paper thus proposes a hybrid renewable energy generation plant that could supply a percentage of the total energy demand and reduce the environmental impact of conventional energy generation. The hybrid plant works with a photovoltaic (PV) system and wind turbine systems, connected in parallel with the grid to supply a renewable fraction of the total energy demand. The investigation was conducted in three steps: the first stage determined locations where the energy system was able to take advantage of renewable sources, the second identified a location that could work more efficiently from an economic perspective, and finally, the third step estimated the number of PV solar panels and wind turbines required to guarantee optimal functioning for this location using, as a main method of calculation, the software HOMER pro® for hybrid optimization with multiple energy resources. The proposed system is expected to not only limit environmental impacts but also decrease total costs of electric grid consumption from thermoelectric plants. The simulations helped identify Puerto Bolivar, Colombia, as the location where the hybrid plant made the best use of non-conventional resources of energy. However, Rancho Grande was found to offer the system more efficiency, while generating a considerable amount of energy at the lowest possible cost. An optimal combination was also obtained—441 PV arrays and 3 wind turbines, resulting in a net present cost (NPC) of $11.8 million and low CO2 production of 244.1 tons per year. The diversification of the energy matrix, including larger shares of Renewable Energy Sources (RES), is a significant part of the Colombian energy strategy towards a sustainable and more secure energy system. Historically, the country has relied on the intensive use of hydropower and fossil fuels as the main energy sources. Colombia has a huge renewables potential, and therefore the exploration of different pathways for their integration is required. The aim of this study was to build a model for a country with a hydro-dominated electric power system and analyse the impacts of integrated variable RES in long-term future scenarios. EnergyPLAN was the modelling tool employed for simulating the reference year and future alternatives. Initially, the reference model was validated, and successively five different scenarios were built. The results show that an increase in the shares of wind, solar and bioenergy could achieve an approximate reduction of 20% in both the CO 2 emissions and the total fuel consumption of the country by 2030. Further, in the electricity sector the best-case scenario could allow an estimated 60% reduction in its emission intensity. • A reference model of the Colombian energy system is developed and validated. • Different future scenarios are built using the EnergyPLAN modelling tool. • The impact of increasing RES penetration is analysed. • The maximum technical levels of wind and solar PV in the electricity sector are estimated.
