- Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore design student's perceptions over traditional and digital mediums within the design process. In this research, a convenient sample of design students was selected from two universities between Latin America and North America to respond a questionnaire which inquired for the design steps and the type of tools they used. The importance of traditional medium in the design process has been widely researched (e.g. Goldschmidt, 1991; Suwa et al., 1998; Tang & Gero, 2002). In a similar manner, digital medium has evolved in the design practice and researchers have looked at how the use of digital tools affect the design process (Salman, et al.2014). Multiple studies have argued that some stages of this process cannot be supported by digital medium tools (e.g. Bilda & Demirkan, 2003; Kwon, et al., 2005; Meniru, et al., 2003; Stones & Cassidy, 2007). In contrast, digital medium stimulates the occurrence of design patterns and epistemic actions (Yu, et al. 2015: Chandrasekera, 2014). Digital medium will require the development of new knowledge which may affect the designer's role and the education practices of new designers. The outcomes of this study will help design educators to understand design students' preferences in using digital tools and develop curriculums accordingly. In addition, it will aid software developers to better understand, cater to design students' needs and take advantage in the growing shift from traditional to digital medium.

- Abstract
This article aims to share the transformative experience of several schools of the Society of Jesus in Colombia. Starting with the Colegio San Ignacio de Loyola in the city of Medellin and articulated with the experiences of three other schools in different regions (Colegio San Luis Gonzaga in Manizales, Colegio Berchmans in Cali, and Colegio San Pedro Claver in Bucaramanga), to weave a collaborative process of network innovation. It is not intended to be a manual of instructions, but the expression of a process of community discernment that for several years has allowed them to deepen their knowledge of their context, the common sense to the needs to be met, the deepening in the sense of educational mission of their institutions and the collaborative learning to carry out their work. The result of this process is the transformation of the mentality of the apostolic companions working in those institutions. Inspired by the action of the Holy Spirit, this innovation process gives an account of authentic processes of personal and community renewal for the transformation of the educational apostolate.

The coffee sector stands as a cornerstone of Colombia's economy, ranking third in the nation's export portfolio. Despite the Colombian coffee esteemed global reputation, it has yet to fully exploit its potential for diversification into differentiated products. Present agro-industrial paradigms emphasize trade and sustainable, efficient agricultural practices, underscoring the imperative for innovation across production, marketing, and distribution channels. This study aims to pinpoint the pivotal innovation factors within coffee farm production processes. To this end, a sample of 66 coffee farms was selected through simple random sampling. Drawing from the 2018 Oslo model, innovation types associated with sustainable specialty coffee certifications were delineated. Within this framework, seven fundamental factors emerged for investigation: economic, social, environmental, production, knowledge, technology, and change management. Through cluster analysis, it became evident that economic, environmental, knowledge, technological, and change management factors are indispensable for fortifying the coffee industry. - Abstract
Good teachers are essential for high-quality educational systems. However, little is known about teachers' skills formation during college. By combining two standardized tests for Colombian students, one taken at the end of senior year in high school and the other when students are near graduation from college, this paper documents the extent to which education majors relatively improve or deteriorate their skills in quantitative reasoning, native language, and foreign language, in comparison to students in other programs. Teachers' skills vis-à-vis those in other majors deteriorate in quantitative reasoning and foreign language, although they deteriorate less for those in math-oriented and foreign language oriented programs. For native language, there is no evidence of robust differences in relative learning mobility. An appendix contains Figure A1 and Tables A1 and A2.

Introduction: This article presents a model of political competition in which political parties, through clientelism strategies, vie for control of legislative seats. Parties exercise political violence to prevent potential rivals from gaining power and threatening their position within the hybrid political regime. The theory suggests that the degree of political violence exerted by parties in hybrid regimes will increase (decrease) as they concentrate more (less) power in the legislature. Methods: Using the methodology of analytical narratives, we examine the narrative on political violence in the Colombian political regime to identify key actors, strategies, information sets, and institutional changes. From these identified elements, we construct a theoretical model of political competition within the mathematical theory of games to explain the institutional changes highlighted in the narrative. Finally, we develop an econometric model to find statistical evidence supporting the predictions of the theoretical model derived from the narrative. Results: The narrative and the analytical narrative indicate that, in a hybrid regime, a higher degree of political power concentration causes a higher rate of political violence. The estimation of the Vector Auto-regression model allows us to analyze the response of the violence rate to a shock in the concentration index. Following an unexpected increase in the concentration of political power, the violence rate shows an initial increase of approximately 0.3 percentage points above its initial value. Subsequently, the effect attenuates slightly and stabilizes at around 0.2 percentage points above the baseline, maintaining this level throughout the period. Discussion/Conclusion: The theoretical model proposed in this paper suggests an explanation of political violence that diverges from the explanations offered by traditional theories. We suggest that the theoretical model proposed here captures the historical logic of the relationship between violence, political clientelism, and exclusion in Colombia, a country with a relatively long tradition as a formal democracy (since 1958), leading us to interesting conclusions that have not been proposed so far in the literature on violence in Latin America. - Abstract
This article presents a partial report of a small qualitative research study that explored the students' views of their learning during and after the implementation of formative procedures such as self-assessment, feedback, and conferences. The article also includes their perceptions about this implementation. The research was carried out with a group of students of English enrolled in an extension program of a Colombian public university. The results showed that formative assessment helped these learners to be aware of their communicative competence and to perceive the situations in which they developed this awareness; it also enabled them to experience success in their learning. Also, learners identified the purposes of this kind of assessment and perceived formative assessment as a transparent procedure.

- Abstract
Distance web-based learning is a popular strategy in ELT teaching in Colombia. Despite of the growth of experiences, there are very few studies regarding teachers' participation in these courses. This paper reports preliminary findings of an on-going study aiming at exploring the roles that a teach er plays in an EFL reading comprehension distance web-based course. Data analysis suggests that teachers play new roles solving technical problems, providing immediate feedback, interacting with students in a non traditional way, providing time management advice, and acting as a constant motivator. The authors conclude that EFL teachers require training for this new teaching roles and the analysis of web-based distance learning environments as an option under permanent construction that requires their active participation.

Background: Sucrose accumulation in sugarcane is affected by several environmental and genetic factors, with plant moisture being of critical importance for its role in the synthesis and transport of sugars within the cane stalks, affecting the sucrose concentration. In general, rainfall and high soil humidity during the ripening stage promote plant growth, increasing the fresh weight and decreasing the sucrose yield in the humid region of Colombia. Therefore, this study aimed to identify markers associated with sucrose accumulation or production in the humid environment of Colombia through a genome-wide association study (GWAS). Results: Sucrose concentration measurements were taken in 220 genotypes from the Cenicaña's diverse panel at 10 (early maturity) and 13 (normal maturity) months after planting. For early maturity data was collected during plant cane and first ratoon, while at normal maturity it was during plant cane, first, and second ratoon. A total of 137,890 SNPs were selected after sequencing the 220 genotypes through GBS, RADSeq, and whole-genome sequencing. After GWAS analysis, a total of 77 markers were significantly associated with sucrose concentration at both ages, but only 39 were close to candidate genes previously reported for sucrose accumulation and/or production. Among the candidate genes, 18 were highlighted because they were involved in sucrose hydrolysis (SUS6, CIN3, CINV1, CINV2), sugar transport (i.e., MST1, MST2, PLT5, SUT4, ERD6 like), phosphorylation processes (TPS genes), glycolysis (PFP-ALPHA, HXK3, PHI1), and transcription factors (ERF12, ERF112). Similarly, 64 genes were associated with glycosyltransferases, glycosidases, and hormones. Conclusions: These results provide new insights into the molecular mechanisms involved in sucrose accumulation in sugarcane and contribute with important genomic resources for future research in the humid environments of Colombia. Similarly, the markers identified will be validated for their potential application within Cenicaña's breeding program to assist the development of breeding populations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Urban centers settled under the influence of volcanic activity are common in the Colombian Andes, particularly those such as Manizales city (ca. 400,000 inhabitants) and other smaller towns on the western flank of the Central Cordillera. Several pumice-rich tephra layers widely dispersed beneath the city suggest multiple Plinian-type eruptions have occurred nearby. From this geological record, the four youngest, thickest, and most persistent layers in the region are the most representative of this activity. This work uses mapping, physical descriptions, radiocarbon dating, and calculation of physical parameters to: (1) define and characterize the tephra sequence, (2) determine the age of the eruptions, (3) define the source and eruptive dynamics associated with each of the events, and (4) give insights into the volcanic hazard for Manizales city. The deposits were named in this study as Lower Manizales (Lm), Middle-lower Manizales (Mlm), Middle-upper Manizales (Mum) and Upper Manizales (Um) tephra layers, together forming the "Manizales tephra sequence". Mapping of the deposits revealed the lower layer originated from the little known Plazuela volcano (~ 15 km east of Manizales), while the others originated in the Cerro Bravo volcano (~ 25 km east of Manizales). The radiometric analysis indicates that the lowest tephra layer originated at 7879.5 ± 55.5 cal. years BP, while the three overlying layers were deposited at 7730 ± 55 cal. years BP, 5294 ± 19 cal. years BP, and 2759 ± 20 cal. years BP. All of these deposits were formed by Plinian-type eruptions, with column heights varying between 18 and 29 km. The minimum tephra volume emitted by each eruption was between 0.21 and 0.38 km
3 , and the emission rate 21.6 × 107 kg/s for the Lm layer, 3.38 × 107 kg/s for the Mlm layer, 6.27 × 107 kg/s for the Mum layer, and 5.16 × 107 kg/s for the Um layers. The results suggest that the region is strongly threatened by pyroclastic falls associated with several active volcanoes located in the Central Cordillera. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

Environmental perception serves as a powerful tool for identifying community needs and potential within their surroundings. This study assessed tourists' environmental perception regarding solid waste and its impact on the Hurtado Balneary, located in Valledupar, Colombia. The investigation delved into the environmental attitudes and behaviors of 769 balneary users by employing a combination of observation, photographic documentation, and a comprehensive 21-question online survey. The findings are 98.8% of participants acknowledged the adverse effects of solid waste on the environment, with 98% demonstrating a willingness to participate in waste management efforts. Furthermore, 42.13% exhibited limited awareness regarding waste management practices, reflecting a concerning lack of public interest and commitment (41.61%). Statistically significant disparities (p > 0.05) emerged 59% of waste items were not appropriately disposed of in designated receptacles. Reasons for this included a lack of a sense of belonging (50.2%) and inadequate environmental education (45.6%). Ninety-six percent expressed the need for river conservation signage, while 59.8% did not undertake any form of environmental training. The study's implications extend beyond the Hurtado Balneary, potentially informing solid waste management strategies in other aquatic environments. This investigation aligns with three Sustainable Development Goals: SDG 12, emphasizing responsible consumption and production; SDG 13, addressing climate action; and SDG 15, advocating for life on land and below water. The regions with the best economy have a greater capacity to develop low-income or social-impact housing, thus contributing to the reduction of poverty and, therefore, to the fulfillment of Sustainable Development Goals. This is observed in fewer people living in extreme poverty and with fewer unmet basic needs. This present article analyzes the correlation between the development in the main economic sectors in different regions (departments) of Colombia and the supply of low-income housing. Nevertheless, the most remarkable relation that was found was between the economic development of the regions (GDP) and the supply of non-social housing (more expensive commercial value) (Spearman's Rho: 0.9). This means that there is an imbalance between regional economic capacity and the low-income housing supply because the regions with higher economic potential should have a less demanding population, that is, people living in poverty. These correlations are better when they go hand in hand with activities that are mostly developed in an urban environment, such as manufacturing, construction, real estate, and finance and insurance. On the contrary, these correlations are worse with industries such as mining and agriculture that mostly operate in rural areas. The analysis between low-income housing and economic sectors' GDP yields low correlations, but these are worse for rural industries. Also, the investigation shows a positive change in the correlations' trend for the year 2021, the beginning of the post-pandemic economic recovery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
While investment in technology for use in the classroom is increasing, studies still do not reveal significant improvements in learning. Investigations have shown that aligning the design of learning experiences with students' needs creates synergy in the teaching and learning classroom processes. This can be achieved through orchestration, the guided integration of conventional and digital resources. This study seeks to investigate how orchestration increases student learning while taking into consideration their different pace of learning and monitoring the standards that the curriculum requires of a teacher. This is done by adopting a model which incorporates both the requirements of a school system's curriculum, as well as the students' specific needs based on their effective learning. It also seeks to determine which elements enrich the learning experience within an orchestrated framework. This study experimentally shows a significant increase in student learning when orchestrations are made available to teachers, when teachers successfully integrate technology into the classroom and when systematic use of the available resources is made. Furthermore, this study demonstrates the importance of addressing weaknesses in each student's base of knowledge by adapting the activities in the classroom to their individual pace of learning.

Accelerated rates of urbanization negatively impact natural habitats and biodiversity. Studies of the effects of urbanization on fauna have emphasized taxonomic diversity, but this does not necessarily reflect effects on the evolutionary history of assemblages. Here, we study how urbanization influences phylogenetic diversity (PD) of bird assemblages in a small–medium city in the Central Andes of Colombia. Between 2016 and 2017, we performed bird surveys in 76 urban cells and 23 rural cells around the city. Then, we measured habitat characteristics (e.g. anthropogenic noise level, impervious and forested area) in sampled cells. PD of birds was between 1.37–1.42 MY higher in the rural than in the urban habitat. Within the urban habitat, the PD of birds reduces as impervious area and noise levels increase, while in the urban cells with most forested areas reach the highest PD values. Most of these differences and relationships disappear when we performed similar analysis controlling for differences in species richness. A low turnover of PD between assemblages of birds recorded inside Armenia and its less urbanized surroundings suggest green areas in the study area could mitigate the effects of urbanization in native fauna, and ameliorate connectivity between urban cells. Geodiversity, comprising both endogenous and exogenous geological processes, plays a crucial role in shaping the structure and functionality of natural systems, alongside its substantial impact on human well-being. However, the often-overlooked interconnection between geodiversity components limits our comprehension of geosystems. In the Chinchiná River Basin (CRB) in Colombia, located in the northern Andes in South America, we established criteria to differentiate geodiversity classes, calculated indices to understand the distribution of geological elements, and discussed systemic relationships. This comprehensive approach lays the foundation for a holistic comprehension of the territory's structure and functionality. Our findings revealed the convergence in an area of 1052 km
2 of 10 rock types, 7 slope ranges, 13 landforms, 5 drainage density features, 610.4 km of faults with 9 kinematic tendencies, 5 soil orders, 5 climate types, a 3328 km surface drainage network with 7 hydrographic orders, 1 underground aquifer, 4 areas with lakes, 2 zones with glaciers, 27 polygenetic and monogenetic volcanoes, and several thermal springs. This discussion explores the implications of various methodologies used to establish the value of the general geodiversity index while also examining the relationships between abiotic elements and their distribution patterns. This forms a fundamental basis for understanding the geosystem services of the basin in terms of regulation, support, and provisioning processes, as well as the culture and knowledge derived from geodiversity. These conceptual elements are indispensable for enhancing the sustainability of a region that is susceptible to the impacts of climate change. Furthermore, they serve as the foundations for the objective's achievement, as set by the UNESCO Global Geopark project "Volcán del Ruiz", currently ongoing within the region. Background: The SARS-CoV2 global pandemic impacted participants in the Alzheimer's Prevention Initiative (API) Autosomal Dominant Alzheimer's Disease (ADAD) clinical trial, who faced three stressors: 1) fear of developing dementia; 2) concerns about missing treatment; and 3) risk of SARS-CoV2 infection. Objective: To describe the frequency of psychological disorders among the participants of the API ADAD Colombia clinical study, treated by a holistic mental health team during the COVID-19 pandemic. The extent of use of mental health team services was explored considering different risk factors, and users and non-users of these services were compared. Methods: Participants had free and optional access to psychology and psychiatry services, outside of the study protocol. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze the frequency of the mental health difficulties. A multivariable logistic regression model has been used to assess associations with using this program. Results: 66 participants were treated by the Mental Health Team from March 1, 2020, to December 31, 2020. Before and after the start of the pandemic, the most common psychological problems were anxiety (36.4% before, 63.6% after) and depression (34.8% before, 37.9% after). 70% of users assisted by psychology and 81.6% of those assisted by psychiatry felt that the services were useful for them. Female sex, depression, and anxiety before the pandemic were positively associated with being assisted by either psychology or psychiatry, while the association with hyperlipidemia was negative. Conclusions: A holistic mental health program, carried out in the context of a study, could mitigate psychopathology during pandemics such as COVID-19. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work evaluates the economic efficiency of coffee growers and the decision-making processes in the configuration of their production systems and agronomic practices over time. For these purposes, information from 136 coffee growers in the department of Caldas was analyzed. These growers systematically recorded and constructed their production costs for seven years (2015–2021) within the framework of the Business Management Program of the Departmental Committee of Coffee Growers of Caldas. Additionally, through a survey, more information on the socioeconomic types, production systems, and decision-making processes in the implementation of practices and use of technologies was obtained. Stochastic frontier analysis demonstrates that on average, these coffee farmers had an economic efficiency of 89%. The group of coffee growers with efficiency levels equal to or higher than 90% comprised 80 producers (59%). These results indicate that for the period of analysis, there are no structural inefficiencies that cannot be corrected; that is, these coffee growers can increase their efficiency and productivity levels with the available technologies. This work aims to analyze the relationship between the evolution of the pandemic and the evolution of fact-checking journalism produced in 2020 in five Latin American countries: Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador and Mexico. Based on a quantitative approach, based on the frequency of fact-checking, associated with the analysis of the number of people infected and killed by COVID-19, this work analyzed the existence of patterns in the production of fact-checking. The main results indicated that the large volume of fact-checking preceded the peak of the first wave of the pandemic and that the main factor in combating disinformation appeared to be reality and not the narrative dispute established between fake news and fact-checking. This paper aims to open a window into diversity and inequity issues unveiled by COVID-19 in accounting education in a context of social and political unrest. Following interviews and autoethnographic written reports, a survey of Colombian accounting professors was examined and complemented by a student survey. The study drew on the concepts of conscientização and dialogic pedagogy, proposed by Brazilian social scientist Paulo Freire. The findings showed that the pandemic enabled students and faculty to move from a magical to a critical stage of conscientização (critical consciousness). The pandemic led them to reflect on their context, question the role of accounting, and advance their liberation from oppressive positions. We ended our research with the claim a student posted on their profile: "How hard it is to study while they are killing my people!" Future studies may extend the scope of research to other periods and geographic contexts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

VOLCANOES , *RARE earth metals , *OXIDE minerals , *LAVA flows , *ARGON-argon dating , *VOLCANOLOGY - Abstract
Two recently discovered volcanoes (Las Margaritas 1 and 2) located near the city of Manizales in central Colombia (northern Andes) show that monogenetic volcanoes can be both effusive and be fed by evolved compositions, unlike in most other monogenetic fields. This study presents the results of cartographic, petrographic, geochemical, and geochronological analyses. Mapping indicates that the volcanoes are purely effusive, where the first erupted a dome coulée and the second erupted a lava flow. K/Ar dating of the groundmass yielded emplacement ages of 0.77 ± 0.04 and 0.80 ± 0.05 Ma for each volcano. The rocks in both volcanoes contain plagioclase, amphibole, and Fe-Ti oxides as ubiquitous minerals, but only one volcano hosts biotite. The two volcanoes can also be differentiated by the presence of amphibole oxidation rims in one of them. Both volcanoes are andesitic in composition and have a calk-alkaline signature. Trace elements show light rare earth element (LREE) enrichment, and negative Th, Nb, Ta, and Ti anomalies. Overall, the results indicate equilibrium conditions that allowed not only phenocrysts and microphenocrysts to crystallize, but also convection and stagnation processes that allowed zonation and glomerocrysts to form. This, along with the chemical information, indicates subduction characteristics that can be explained by small magma batches breaking off from crustal reservoirs. These effusive monogenetic eruptions are thus associated with efficient degassing during ascent, while compositional evolution is related to relative long-term magma stagnation in the crust. The aim of the present study was twofold: first, to determine the meeting all three 24‐h movement guidelines in Colombian preschool‐aged children, and second, to explore the associations between different socio‐ecological correlates and the meeting of these guidelines. This was a cross‐sectional study with data from the Encuesta Nacional de Situación Nutricional (ENSIN‐2015) in Colombia, 2015–2016. The sample comprised 3002 low‐income preschoolers (3–4 years old, 50.7% boys). Data on physical activity, screen time, and sleep time were collected using the Cuestionario para la Medición de Actividad Física y Comportamiento Sedentario, reported by their parents. In total, 18 potential correlates (individual, interpersonal, organizational, and community level) were analyzed. Backward binary logistic regression analysis was performed with the potential correlates as independent variables and meeting all three 24‐h movement guidelines as dependent variables. The prevalence of preschoolers meeting all three 24‐h movement guidelines or none was 4.8% and 16.6%, respectively. In the final model, boys (odds ratio [OR] = 1.87, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.00–3.50) and those who do not have television in their bedroom (OR = 2.09, 95%CI 1.05–4.14) were more likely to meet all three 24‐h movement guidelines compared to with girls and those who have television, respectively. In conclusion, strategies to promote adherence to all 24‐h movement guidelines among low‐income preschoolers are warranted, and should focus on actions considering the importance of sex and home environment changes to support these movement behaviors. Weather variables has been described as major drivers of vector proliferation and arbovirus transmission. Among them, temperature has consistently been found to be impactful in transmission dynamics, and models that incorporate temperature have been widely used to evaluate and forecast transmission or arboviruses like dengue, zika, or chikungunya virus. Further, there is growing evidence of the importance of micro-environmental temperatures in driving transmission of Aedes aegypti-borne viruses, as these mosquitoes tend to live within domiciles. Yet there is still a considerable gap in our understanding of how accounting for micro-environmental temperatures in models varies from the use of other widely-used, macro-level temperature measures. This effort combines field-collected data of both indoor and outdoor household associated temperatures and weather station temperature data from three Colombian cities to describe the relationship between the measures representing temperature at the micro- and macro-levels. These data indicate that weather station data may not accurately capture the temperature profiles of indoor micro-environments. However, using these data sources, the basic reproductive number for arboviruses was calculated by means of three modeling efforts to investigate whether temperature measure differences translated to differential transmission predictions. Across all three cities, it was determined that the modeling method was more often impactful rather than the temperature data-source, though no consistent pattern was immediately clear. This suggests that temperature data sources and modeling methods are important for precision in arbovirus transmission predictions, and more studies are needed to parse out this complex interaction. Inland fishing is an essential activity for the livelihood and food security the Colombian population. The knowledge and evaluation of exploited fish stocks is a priority to develop sustainable management and conservation strategies of the fisheries. To optimize the management processes of fishery resources and conservation of species, it is necessary to evaluate the population structure and identification of stocks. Geometric morphometrics analysis have shown useful in the evaluation of fish stocks. This study focuses on the species Plagioscion magdalenae, commonly called "Pacora", corvinata, or river croaker, which belongs to the family Sciaenidae, a family characterized as an important fishery resource. With the aim of generating a baseline about the state of the P. magdalenae population structure, samples were collected along the marshy complex of the Dique channel, Colombia, between December 2020 and October 2021. In this study, the existence of morphometric variability between individuals of Plagioscion magdalenae was found across sampling sites, Ciénaga de Capote and Ciénaga del Jobo; shape differences between location suggest the action of environmental pressures and the existence of anthropogenic pressures, such as unsustainable artisanal fishing. AGRICULTURAL pests ,COVID-19 pandemic ,PEST control ,AGRICULTURE ,COVID-19 ,TOMATO farming - Abstract
Purpose: This study aims to identify the most relevant causal factors and the feedback loops of the dynamics between Tuta absoluta incidence in tomato crops and farmers' reactions to the problem. The authors seek to develop a conceptual model based on farmers' know-how to address crop damage by T. absoluta at a local and regional levels in order to determine how to confront this problem in the tomato-growing region of Sáchica, Colombia. Design/methodology/approach: Community-Based System Dynamics (CBSD) is a participatory research methodology in which a group of stakeholders identifies relevant variables and the cause-effect relations among them which are then arranged into a causal loop diagram. The authors implemented this methodology in a workshop, focused on the farmers' insights related to the pest situation at the local and regional level, to achieve a causal loop diagram that explained pest dynamics and their potential management. Findings: The relevant factors for the presence of T. absoluta, seen in the causal loop diagram, vary regionally and locally. At the local level, the pest impacts tomato production, farmers' well-being and their cash flow, while at the regional level, it affects market dynamics and environment and promotes regional coordination among farmers. Farmers propose product innocuity as a key regional objective. They also proposed establishing a planting calendar and census of greenhouses to control the pest throughout the region and the tomato supply. Research limitations/implications: First, the synthesized model could not be validated with the farmers due to the COVID 19 epidemic. However, the authors held sessions with experts to analyze each result. Second, decision-makers from the local government did not participate in the workshop. Nevertheless, the approach of the workshop was aimed at understanding the mental models of the farmers since they are the ones who decide how pests are managed. Finally, even though farmers showed interest in projects aimed at proposing area-wide, long-term and wide pest control strategies, there is a risk that they will not adopt the proposed changes, due to risk aversion. Originality/value: CBSD has not been applied to agricultural systems to analyze impacts from pests at the local and regional levels. The results of this study contribute to designing future interventions for pest control in the region, along with the factors which may turn out to be "side effects" or unwanted results. To design pest control interventions at a regional level, a sound understanding of the variables or factors that control the system dynamics at various levels is required. This study represents the first step towards that end. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Aims: A noninterventional prospective study was performed in Colombia and Peru. The aim was to describe the impact of access to treatment on Patient‐reported outcomes (PRO) in patients with Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) after failure to conventional disease‐modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) in real‐life conditions. Methods: The impact of access to treatment was measured by access barriers, time to supply (TtS) and interruption evaluating their effect in changes of PROs between baseline and 6‐month follow‐up between February 2017 and November 2019. The association of access to care with disease activity, functional status, health‐related quality of life was assessed using bivariate and multivariable analysis. Results are expressed in least mean difference; TtS in mean number of days for delivery of treatment at baseline. Variability measures were standard deviation and standard error. Results: One hundred seventy patients were recruited, 70 treated with tofacitinib and 100 with biological DMARDs. Thirty‐nine patients reported access barriers. The mean of TtS was 23 ± 38.83 days. The difference from baseline to 6‐month visit in PROs were affected by access barriers and interruptions. There was not statistically significant difference in the of PRO's score among visits in patients that reported delay of supply of more than 23 days compared to patients with less days of delay. Conclusion: This study suggested the access to treatment can affect the response to the treatment at 6 months of follow‐up. There seems to be no effect in the PROs for delay of TtS during the studied period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

AGRICULTURAL laborers ,WATER management ,BANANAS ,WATER shortages ,AGRICULTURAL productivity - Abstract
Banana production is an agricultural activity that requires intensive use of water. Its increasing demand brings about not only risks of water scarcity in banana-producing farms but also management challenges for the farm workers. Thus, understanding the association of water management practices with the banana workers' knowledge, attitude, and practices is crucial. Therefore, this study aimed to develop a scale to assess the relationship among the knowledge, attitudes, and practices – KAP – of banana farm workers regarding water management and associated factors. A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on three banana farms in the Urabá region, Colombia. The scale showed excellent psychometric properties in the dimensions of knowledge and attitude. Scores on the scale indicated that the workers have a satisfactory level of knowledge and attitude and an excellent level of practice. However, no relationship was noted between practices, and knowledge and attitude. The results suggest that workers' practices do not depend on their knowledge and attitude as they are workers employed by one company. Thus, the practices of farm workers can be easily controlled as they have to do what they are told to do by their boss. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chondrosarcoma, a type of malignant neoplasm that producing fibrillary matrix and hyalin cartilage, is described in many species, but it is little known in synanthropic birds. This manuscript discusses a clinical case of a male domestic pigeon (Columba livia) of free-living in Bogota, Colombia, rescued in Phase II of the Alas District Project (Agreement 296 of 2019) and referred to the Centro de Atención de Palomas (CAP - Pigeon Care Center), with a tumor injury in one of its wings, whose diagnosis was of extraskeletal chondrosarcoma. Cancer in animals occurs by the convergence of multiple internal and external factors, among which human pressure on the environment could be modify oncogenic mechanisms in different species. This report makes a new and important contribution to the knowledge of avian health, comparing the diagnosis with other cases, and raising hypothesis on possible causes such as pollution and diet. Also it proposes working under the One Health approach, to identify other predisposing, epidemiological and environmental factors, in order to preserve global health and assest whether pigeons would be sanitary quality sentinels in urban areas of Colombia. Introduction: Determining perioperative risk is part of the strategies implemented with the aim of reducing morbidity and mortality in the surgical population in the world. Although there is no established definition, high perioperative risk is associated with the group of patients with the highest disease burden. Objective: To determine postoperative mortality and its associated factors in patients with high perioperative risk. Methods: Analytical observational cohort study of high perioperative risk patients included in the database (n = 843) of the anesthesia program in a high complexity hospital in Colombia, between January 2011 and April 2018. Pre and postoperative variables were analyzed using uni and multivariate logistic regression per protocol. Overall and stratified mortality were estimated and factors associated with their occurrence were analyzed. Finally, survival was analyzed, the primary outcome being overall cohort mortality and stratified high cardiovascular risk mortality. Results: Cumulative 7-day mortality was 3.68% (95% CI 2.40-4.95%) and 30-day mortality was 10.08% (95% CI 8.05-12.12%). Perioperative mortality in the high cardiovascular risk group in the first 7 days was 3.60% (95% CI 1.13-6.07%) and 14.86% (95% CI 10.15-19.58%) at 30 days. The following preoperative variables were associated with mortality: chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic kidney disease, limited functional class and abdominal aortic aneurysm. A strong association was observed between postoperative complications and a significant increase in mortality rate; the most relevant complications were cerebrovascular events and cardiogenic shock. Conclusions: In this group of high perioperative risk patients, and in the subgroup of high cardiovascular risk patients, overall mortality at 7 and at 30 days was estimated to be above values reported in various countries. Mortality was significantly increased by the presence of preoperative factors and postoperative complications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Cognitive impairment is frequent among people living with Parkinson's disease: up to 40% of patients exhibit symptoms of mild cognitive impairment and 25% meet the criteria for dementia. Parkinson's Disease Cognitive Rating Scale (PD-CRS) is one of the recommended scales by the Movement Disorders Society Task Force for level 1 screening of dementia. However, its psychometric properties have not been studied in the Colombian population. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 100 patients with Parkinson's disease diagnosed by a movement disorders neurologist. Patients were evaluated with PD-CRS and MoCA. Principal component analysis was conducted, and then confirmatory factor analysis was implemented through the maximum-likelihood method. Internal consistency was evaluated using Cronbach α. Convergent and divergent validity were also calculated and concurrent validity with the MoCA was assessed. Results: 62% were males. Their median age was 68 years (IQR 57-74) and the median disease duration was 4 years (IQR 2-9). 77% were classified in early stages (Hoehn and Yahr stage = 2), while the MDS-UPDRS part III score was 25 (IQR 15.5-38). In the principal component factor analysis, the pattern matrix unveiled a mnesic and a non-mnesic domain. Confirmatory factor analysis showed similar explanatory capacity (λ = 0.50) for items other than naming (λ = 0.34). Cronbach's α for the full 9-items instrument was 0.74. MoCA and PD-CRS total scores were correlated (ρ = 0.71, p = 0.000). Assuming a cutoff score of 62 points, there is an agreement of 89% with the definition of dementia by MoCA for Colombia (κ = 0.59; p = 0.000). Conclusion: PD-CRS has acceptable psychometric properties for the Colombian population and has significant correlation and agreement with a validated scale (MoCA). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
