Introduction: Introduction: migration has been associated with the development of chronic noncommunicable diseases such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disorders. Similarly, the food transition during migration has been related to a high consumption of foods high in refined sugars and saturated fats. There are specific characteristics of the eating behavior that may influence quality in the migrant population's diet. Objective: to compare feeding behavior between the Colombian and Chilean populations residing in the north and center of Chile. Method: the structured interview E-TONA, focused on assessing the behavioral components of daily and anomalous eating habits, was administered to 1,872 individuals, both Chileans and Colombians. Descriptive analyses of frequency distribution and logistic regressions were performed, and odds ratios were calculated. Results: there are significant differences in the majority of eating behaviors, both daily and anomalous, between Chileans and Colombian migrants. Chileans tend to follow more regular schedules and "snack" more between meals than migrants. Migrants have twice the risk of eating alone because they feel ashamed of their eating amount and speed, tend to show fewer behaviors related to better quality in their diet, and tend to be less worried about their diet than Chileans; however, Chileans are almost twice as likely to binge on food and use food as a method to calm anxiety. Conclusion: there are significant differences in most of the evaluated eating behaviors that must be addressed in depth considering cultural differences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

WEIGHT gain , *DIETARY proteins , *FISH feeds , *REGRESSION analysis , *EMPLOYEE reviews - Abstract
Introduction: Dollar fish, Metynnis orinocensis, is one of the ornamental species native to Colombia with great importance in the international market. They inhabit mainly permanent lagoons and flood areas to the basins of the Amazon and Orinoco rivers. This specie has been reproduced in captivity. However, information concerning the effects of feeding on the productive performance of the specie under culture conditions is very scarce or null. Objective: To evaluate the protein requirement of juveniles M. orinocensis. Methods: We used 425 M. orinocensis fingerlings with a mean weight 0.5 ± 0.1 g and mean length 2.7 ± 0.3 cm, which were randomly distributed in seven treatments with three replications for each, in a closed recirculation system with constant aeration and fed until apparent satiety, two times a day for 60 days. Seven diets were formulated varying the protein level (20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40 and 44 % PB). The following parameters were evaluated: weight gain, feed intake, length increase, apparent feed conversion rate, specific growth rate, protein assimilation efficiency and survival rate. The protein requirement was estimated, using the weight gain, by second-order polynomial regression analysis. Results: The growth data show a gradual increase in the weight gain in relation to the protein level in the diet, until maximum gain of 2.56 g in the fish fed with 32 % PB. The apparent food conversion showed a progressive decrease as the protein level was increased, being for 20 %, 2.9 and for 40 % 1.9. Conclusions: Considering the results of weight gain, the optimal crude protein requirement for M. orinocensis is 34.3 %. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

FISH ecology , *CATFISHES , *FISHERY management , *GEOLOGICAL basins , *FISH feeds , *BODY composition of fish - Abstract
Objective. To study the trophic ecology of Liso in the Sinu river as a contribution to the knowledge of its biology and ecology, preservation in wild environment and the management of fishery in the basin. Materials and methods. The stomach content was analyzed by using the Proportion of empty stomachs, digestion rate, Frequency of occurrence, numerical Frequency, Gravimetry, relative importance Index (RII) and gut length (GL)-total length (TL) relationship. Results. 38.2% of stomachs were empty, 92.5% of preys were half digested and five food items were identified, they are conformed by Fish, Crustaceans, Insects, Vegetable Rests and Others. Fish, conformed by Cachama, Cocobolo, Mayupa, Sardine and Rest of other fish, was the most common prey (69.9%), the most abundant prey (45.5%) and the greatest prey composition in weight (76.8%). Relative importance Index indicated that fish was the main prey (RII =81.6%), and the other prey reached low relative importance, or circumstantial or incidental prey. Conclusions. The results reached in this study indicate that the Liso is a fish with nocturnal and carnivorous feeding habits, with a tendency to consume other fish. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PASTURES , *SHRUBS , *PLANT species , *LEUCAENA , *PLANT proteins , *FORESTS & forestry , *PERFORMANCE evaluation - Abstract
On the margins of the Cauca River in the department of Caldas, livestock husbandry is the main agricultural activity which occupies almost 48,828 has of the productive territory. The dominant systems are fattening, and dual purpose, based on grass monoculture, while the soil purpose is more directed to silvopastoral systems. In addition, the pastures are low quality and during the summer period they suffer deterioration in the quality and are scarce. The forage trees and shrubs are an alternative for this area; however, it is required to know the performance of species under the conditions of the area. The objective of this work was to evaluate the productive performance of five cut shrub forage species, in hillside zones and explore their acceptance by the animals. The evaluated species were: leucaena (Leucaena leucocephala), Matarraton (Gliricidia sepium), mulberry (Morus alba), Nacedero (Trichanthera gigantea) and Sanjoaquin (Malvaviscus arboreus). A complete blocks at random design was used. The experimental unit was a 5m x 10m with 50 plants plot. Additionally, crude protein and neutral detergent fibe were determined. . The analyzed data corresponded to the average of the observations made during three consecutive days. We used 5 unweaned calves. The best productive performance was obtained with mulberry, followed by matarraton, nacedero and sanjoaquin, respectively. Therefore, in this area, mulberry and matarraton species are more appropriate for the protein banks. Leucaena was the species which had the lowest production. However, it is well suited to the environment of the area of study, it fixes nitrogen and these features make leucaena an appropriate species to integrate silvopastoral systems. SNACK bars , *SCHOOL lunchrooms, cafeterias, etc. , *SCHOOL food , *FOOD habits , *SCHOOL recess breaks - Abstract
Objective: to characterize the availability of products in the school snack bars and students' food consumption during recess in Public Elementary Schools in the city of Tunja, in order to generate recommendations to promote healthy food among the school population. Materials and methods: descriptive cross-cutting study carried out in 12 snack bars with 137 public elementary school students from Tunja selected through a random stratified sampling and who complied with the inclusion criteria. The information was collected through a checking form and a consumed food during recess report format which were designed considering the common criteria found in similar investigations. The results were analyzed in a mono and multi varied manner. Results: 100% of school snack bars offered packed food products, candies, cookies and soft drinks; 91.6% offered processed fruit juice, 58.3% offered popsicles and pasties and 50% of the snack bars offered sodas. Fruits or vegetables were not offered in any of the snack bars studied. 81% of school students consumed food during recess. The food that the students bought more frequently in the school snack bars were: candies (42.2%), packed products, popsicles/ice cream in a proportion of 24.63% for each product. Conclusions: the school snack bars offered food catalogued by the authors as energetically dense with low nutritional value. Students consume this type of food during the school recess. This situation requires health promotion strategies focused on the inclusion of fruits and vegetables in the school environment and the encouragement for students to consume such products. To analyze the state of health within the armies fighting the Wars of Independence, it is important to examine food they consumed rather than just diseases and sanitary conditions. This article examines the issue of sustenance by exploring primary sources, especially military descriptions and diaries, in three different geographic and ecological regions and moments: the llanos of Venezuela, the Siege of Cartagena, and the march across the Andean cordillera during the Campaign of Boyacá in 1819. These different environments determined the provision, access and consumption of food by the warring factions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective. Evaluate the effect of an intervention with rumba dance and nutrition education on the cardiovascular risk factors in a group of people with metabolic syndrome in a rural area of Colombia. Methods. Controlled, randomized clinical trial that included 59 people between 30 and 60 years of age with metabolic syndrome. The intervention group (n = 30) participated in a 12-week exercise program of aerobic rumba (60 minutes, 3 days per week) and muscle-strengthening work (30 minutes, twice a week). Each week the group also received two hours of nutrition education. The control group (n = 29) continued with conventional care. An assessment was made of the effect on the cardiovascular risk factors (physiological, metabolic, anthropometric, and nutritional) in the intervention group. Results. The intervention group showed a reduction in systolic blood pressure (-10.0 mmHg; CI95%: -14.3 to -5.6, P < 0.001), diastolic blood pressure (-4.8 mmHg; CI95%: -8.4 to -1.1, P < 0.05) and overall cardiovascular risk at 10 years (-1.5%; CI95%: -2.7 to -0.3, P < 0.05). Furthermore, there was an increase in peak oxygen consumption (1.7 ml O2∙kg-1∙min-1; CI95%: 0.1 to 3.3, P < 0.05) and muscular strength (P < 0.001). Positive changes were also observed in body composition, caloric intake, and consumption of macro and micronutrients (P < 0.05). No differences were detected between metabolic variables in the two groups or in inflammatory markers (P < 0.05). Conclusions. An exercise program with rumba and muscular strengthening, combined with nutrition education, favorably modifies cardiovascular risk factors in people with metabolic syndrome. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
