In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Red Cross Society of China played a crucial role in distributing medical donations, but the initial efforts were inefficient and neglected medical personnel’s welfare. This study proposes a time-sensitive humanitarian distribution model that optimizes the social costs by integrating logistics and deprivation costs that cares about human suffering. We ues the Gini coefficient to evaluate delays in distribution, aiding trade-off analysis between logistics efforts and social welfare. Our findings show that the proposed model improves the Gini coefficient by an average of 33.96% across 500 scenarios. Additionally, investing 23.7% more in logistics costs reduces the Gini coefficient by 0.1, enhancing the social welfare of medical supplies distribution. Phytoremediation is a promising technique for removing or stabilizing metal ions from metallic trace elements (MTEs) contaminated soils. Despite the significant role of roots in plant growth and survival, limited information is available on the functional covariation of root traits under MTE stress, and linkages between root resource‐use strategies and phytoremediation functioning.Sixteen root traits were measured across 11 trees and shrubs grown in Pb–Zn mine tailings in Southeastern China, to examine whether a hypothesized root economics spectrum (RES) exists under extremely high levels of multiple MTEs stress and evaluate the importance of root functional traits in explaining phytoremediation functioning.Our findings offer evidence supporting the widely accepted resource‐use strategy of acquisitive‐conservative. Furthermore, we have identified a distinct dimension of RES representing the trade‐off between root system size and root tissue density. This new dimension highlights the critical importance of root size, shape and proliferation strategy in the context of metal‐contaminated soil. Moreover, a trade‐off between root cadmium concentration and root dry matter content was observed, which implies the existence of a presumable biomass cost for MTEs accumulation.We identified specific key root traits and their contributions to MTE translocation and bioconcentration, and established linkages between root resource‐use strategy and phytoremediation: roots with more acquisitive traits promote MTE translocation, while conservative roots foster bioconcentration. In addition, acquisitive roots usually exhibit lower biomass costs for accumulating MTEs than do conservative roots.Synthesis and applications. Our results highlight the important role of root size‐related traits in the root economics spectrum (RES) framework in metal‐contaminated soil. Furthermore, we discovered that woody species exhibit different capacities for accumulating or translocating metallic trace elements (MTEs), depending on their root system shapes and their position on axis of RES. These findings provide valuable support for the accurate selection of suitable plant species for ecological restoration purposes. Obtaining a holistic understanding of the impacts of atmospheric nitrogen deposition on multiple ecosystem services of forest is essential for developing comprehensive and sustainable strategies, particularly in heavy N deposition regions such as subtropical China. However, such impacts remain incompletely understood, with most previous studies focus on individual ecosystem function or service via understory N addition experiments. To address this knowledge gap, we quantified the effects of over‐canopy and understory N additions on multiple ecosystem services based on a 7‐year large‐scale field experiment in a typical subtropical forest. Our results showed continued over‐canopy N addition with 50 kg ha−1 year−1 over a period of 4–7 years significantly increased plant nutrient retention, but did not affect the services of soil nutrient accumulation, water yield, C sequestration (in plants and soil), or oxygen release. There were trade‐offs between the soil and plant on providing the services of nutrient accumulation/retention and C sequestration under over‐canopy N addition. However, without uptake and retention of tree canopy, the trade‐off between soil and plant were more weaken under the understory N addition with 50 kg ha−1 year−1, and their relationships were even synergetic under the understory N addition with 25 kg ha−1 year−1. The results suggest that understory N addition cannot accurately simulate the effects of atmospheric N deposition on multiple services, along with mutual relationships. Interestingly, the services of plant N, P retention, and C sequestration exhibited a synergetic increase under the over‐canopy N addition but a decrease under the understory N addition. Our results also found tree layer plays a primary role in providing plant nutrient retention service and is sensitive to atmospheric N deposition. Further studies are needed to investigate the generalized effects of forest canopy processes on alleviating the threaten of global change factors in different forest ecosystems. Introduction: Island ecosystems often have a disproportionate number of endemic species and unique and fragile functional characteristics. However, few examples of this type of ecosystem have been reported. Methods: We conducted a comprehensive field study on Neilingding Island, southern China. The leaf samples of 79 subtropical forest tree species were obtained and their functional traits were studied in the dry and wet seasons to explain the relationships between plant functional traits and soil nutrients. Results: We found a greater availability of soil moisture content (SMC) and nutrients in the wet season than in the dry season. The values of wet season soil available phosphorus (5.97 mg·kg-1), SMC (17.67%), and soil available potassium (SAK, 266.96 mg·kg-1) were significantly higher than those of the dry season. The leaf dry matter content, specific leaf weight, leaf density, leaf total carbon, leaf total nitrogen, leaf total calcium, and the N/P and C/P ratios of leaves were all significantly higher in the dry season than in the wet season, being 18.06%, 12.90%, 12.00%, 0.17%, 3.41%, 9.02%, 26.80%, and 24.14% higher, respectively. In contrast, the leaf area (51.01 cm2), specific leaf area (152.76 cm2·g-1), leaf water content (0.59%), leaf total nitrogen (1.31%), leaf total phosphorus (0.14%), and leaf total magnesium (0.33%) were much lower in the dry season than in the wet one. There were significant pairwise correlations between leaf functional traits, but the number and strength of correlations were significantly different in the dry and wet seasons. The SAK, soil total phosphorus (STP), and pH impacted plant leaf functional traits in the dry season, whereas in the wet season, they were affected by SAK, STP, pH, and NO3 - (nitrate). Urbanization is an important factor affecting ecosystem services (ESs) and their trade-offs. However, little is known about the responses of ES trade-offs to urbanization at different scales. Here, the Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Trade-offs (InVEST) model was used to evaluate water yield (WY), water purification (WP), carbon storage (CS), and habitat quality (HQ) in Erhai Lake Basin using earth observation data, and the percentage of urban land (PUL), population density (POP), gross domestic product (GDP), and night light index (NLI) were used as urbanization indicators. We quantified the ES trade-offs using the root mean square error and analyzed spatiotemporal changes in urbanization indicators, ESs, and their trade-offs. Finally, we characterized the relationship between urbanization and ES trade-offs using correlation analysis and curve regression at the grid and town scales. From 2000 to 2020, values of PUL/GDP/NLI/POP were high in the south and low in the north; specifically, they were 15, 8, 2, and 0.42 times higher in the south than in the north, respectively. The urban expansion area in the Erhai Basin from 2000 to 2020 resulted in a 123.24% and 77.03% increase in WY and WP, respectively, and a 32.38% and 100% decrease in CS and HQ, respectively. The trade-offs between WY and CS and between WY and HQ increased, and other ES trade-offs decreased. Urbanization was significantly correlated with most ES trade-offs at the grid scale, but not at the town scale. There was a significant positive correlation between all urbanization indicators and the trade-off between CS and WP (p < 0.05), and the magnitude of the correlation increased with scale. The relationship between ES trade-offs and urbanization was mostly U-shaped and inverted U-shaped at the grid scale, but N-shaped and inverted N-shaped at the town scale. In the Loess Plateau, gaining insights into the water storage and soil retention functions of diverse vegetation types, especially, in the semi‐arid watersheds is crucial for identifying the key factors necessary to ensure sustainable development and achieve land degradation neutrality. In this study, five different land use types such as forest, shrub, artificial grass, and natural grasslands were surveyed from 2014 to 2020. Meanwhile, bare land was also used as a control plot. The trade‐off between erosion mitigation and water consumption indicator was quantified based on the ecosystem services perspective benefits. Our results showed that there are significant differences among different land use types (p < 0.05): natural grassland > shrubs > artificial grassland > forests. Vegetation restoration was able to change the soil particle size distribution, increasing clay and silt content, and decreasing sand particles. During the growing season, surface soil water storage decreased in all land use types coinciding with the higher decrease in the control plot. The change in surface water storage in the forest was the most stable, with a decrease of 0.13 mm. The trade‐off between erosion mitigation and water consumption indicator was less than 0 for all vegetation types, which indicates a synergistic effect on soil conservation and water storage benefit. Our results demonstrated that shrubs can register the most balanced benefit of water storage and soil preservation. This is a solid basis for the selection of specific vegetation types and the optimization of the watershed landscape in the middle reaches of the Yellow River, characterized by vulnerable areas due to aridification. Research Summary: Prior research suggests that the founders of new ventures leverage their existing networks, such as close ties to service intermediaries, as a source of entrepreneurial improvisation. We draw attention to the trade‐off between the benefits (trust and access to information and resources) and the costs (dependence and a constrained growth opportunity), and identify two contingency conditions for using close ties to improvise: a shorter time horizon for failure and less turbulent market. Analysis based on an original survey of founding teams in China in the period 2015–2016 provides empirical support for our argument. Our study contributes to research on entrepreneurial improvisation by exposing the tension involved in working with close contacts and enriches the literature on the role of service intermediaries. Managerial Summary: We consider the trade‐off involved in relying on close ties to service intermediaries and identify conditions under which founders of new ventures are more likely to rely on such intermediaries to improvise. Although close ties can foster trust and facilitate access to a wide range of information and resources, they may also foster a dependency that could constrain future growth. A survey of founding teams in China from 2015 to 2016 reveals that founding teams leveraged such ties when given a shorter time horizon within which to succeed or fail, and when the market was less turbulent. Forests simultaneously provide multiple ecosystem services (ESs), but the trade-off and synergy among them were uncertain. Biotic and abiotic variables regulate forest ecosystem service multifunctionality (EMF); however, quantifying the relative contribution of them to EMF in natural forests at large scale was still limited. We examined the trade-off in ecosystem services and the drivers of EMF of natural temperate forests in northeast China. Six facets of ESs were derived based on 2227 national forest inventory sample plots, that is, water conservation, soil conservation, stand productivity, tree species diversity, carbon storage and soil fertility maintenance. Structural equation model was applied to quantify the driving forces of EMF including mean annual temperature (MAT), mean annual precipitation (MAP), total nitrogen (TN), soil pH (pH), stand age (Age), additive stand density index (aSDI), stand structural diversity (SSD) and tree species richness (SR). Our results indicated that the RMSD (root mean square deviation) values of the 15 ES pairs ranged from 0.13 to 0.25, and the trade-offs between biodiversity and other five ESs were high, with RMSD values greater than 0.2. We provided clear evidence that stand density was the most important driver of EMF, which affected the EMF indirectly through tree size diversity and species richness. Understanding the contribution of these factors to EMF can help to design sustainable forest management practices in northeast China aiming to foster and preserve multifunctionality. Background: The great species diversity of Lithocarpus is associated with interspecific fruit morphological variation, represented by acorn (AC) and enclosed receptacle (ER) fruit types. Species representing both fruit types co-occur in the same forests and share two distribution centers in southern China and southeastern Asia. The predation selection hypothesis suggests that the fruit morphological mechanical trade-off between two fruit types could represent divergent dispersal strategies under varied predation pressures. By integrating phylogenetic construction with fruit morphometric study, we tried to verify the predation selection hypothesis and elucidate the fruit type evolution of Lithocarpus, which is critical in interpreting the distribution and diversification of the genus. Results: We identified the functional trade-off between the two fruit types: ER species have bigger seeds which are enclosed mainly by receptacle representing stronger physical defense; whereas the seeds of AC species are smaller and enclosed mainly by thin pericarp representing lower mechanical protection. Despite some reversals from ER back to AC, the ancestral state reconstruction in combination with thermal analysis supports the hypothesis that ER is the derived fruit type from AC-like ancestors independently across all clades. Conclusion: Our results support the predation selection hypothesis by verifying the mechanical trade-off between the two fruit types. We propose a divergent selection theory for the two fruit types: the seed size and mechanical defense of AC species become smaller, whereas those of ER species become larger and require more morphological modifications in the receptacle. This signified the importance of the receptacle in differentiating the two fruit types and in the fruit morphological modification through evolutionary time. We found that the ER-type species evolved independently in all clades and across varied climates from tropical to warm temperate regions. As ER fruits are products of convergent evolution, we propose to examine the predation and dispersal variation between two fruit types in the future to verify whether predation selection is the reason behind fruit type evolution of the stone oaks. Functional traits impact species interactions, community composition, and ecosystem functioning. However, few studies have focused on the diversification and phylogenetic correlation of multiple functional traits over geological time. We conducted phylogenetic comparative analysis for boreal forest understory species in northeast China to examine the diversification and phylogenetic correlation in several functional traits: leaf area (LA), leaf carbon content (LCC), leaf dry matter content (LDMC), leaf nitrogen content (LNC), plant height (PH), and specific leaf area (SLA). Phylogenetic signals showed that there were very low levels of phylogenetic niche conservatism (PNC) in understory leaf‐related traits and plant height, suggesting divergence of functional traits for the co‐occurring understory species. The disparity through time analyses (DTT) indicated that trait disparities mainly originated during recent divergence events and there were no differences in the observed trait disparities compared with that expected under Brownian motion. Furthermore, we found both positive and negative phylogenetic correlations among the measured functional traits. The very low levels of PNC suggest that these functional traits diverged among co‐occurring understory species, and that those species are distantly phylogenetically related. The phylogenetic correlations among traits may be caused by both positively and negatively correlated adaptions that correspond to resource acquisition strategies. Terrestrial ecosystem services have experienced evident decline in the past decades. Trade-offs and synergies in ecosystem services have been widely studied to understand the disturbance of human activities on ecosystems. However, the method for ecosystem services assessment remains incomplete, and a few studies of the trade-off analysis of ecosystem services have been conducted at the national scale. In this study, we conducted trade-off analysis of China's ecosystem services—including supplying, regulating, supporting, and cultural services—using a newly revised benefit transfer method and the bivariate Moran's I method during 2000–2015. We found an overall increasing tendency in ecosystem services value when comparing to the findings from previous studies. Synergy was the dominant relationship among the ecosystem services in China, but it varied spatially. Interspecific competition determines the invasive capability of alien plants. Phytolacca americana, one of the most destructive invasive plants in China, was first discovered and recorded in China in 1935. Since its arrival, the rapid expansion of the species has driven out a native congener, Phytolacca acinosa. In this study, we assessed the competitive interaction of the invasive P. americana the native P. acinosa in a pot experiment at Yunnan University. Our results indicate that P. americana severely inhibits the growth and reproduction of P. acinosa. Furthermore, P. americana demonstrated a superior resistance against both insect predation and bacterial infection. We suggest that this improved tolerance against herbivory and potentional pathogen damage may be a cornerstone to the invasive success of Phytolacca americana. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Assembly and co-occurrence of the host co-evolved microbiota are essential ecological and evolutionary processes, which is not only crucial for managing individual plant fitness but also ecological function. However, understanding of the microbiome assembly and co-occurrence in higher plants is not well understood. The tea plant was shown to contribute the forest fitness due to the microbiome assembled in the phyllosphere; the landscape of microbiome assembly in the tea plants and its potential implication on phyllosphere homestasis still remains untangled. This study aimed to deciphering of the microbiome networks of the tea plants at a continental scale. It would provide fundamental insights into the factors driving the microbiome assembly, with an extended focus on the resilience towards the potential pathogen in the phyllosphere. We collected 225 samples from 45 locations spanning approximately 2000-km tea growing regions across China. By integration of high-throughput sequencing data, physicochemical properties profiling and bioinformatics analyses, we investigated continental scale microbiome assembly and co-occurrence in the tea plants. Synthetic assemblages, interaction assay and RT-qPCR were further implemented to analyze the microbial interaction indexed in phyllosphere. A trade-off between stochastic and deterministic processes in microbiomes community assembly was highlighted. Assembly processes were dominated by deterministic processes in bulk and rhizosphere soils, and followed by stochastic processes in roots and leaves with amino acids as critical drivers for environmental selection. Sphingobacteria and Proteobacteria ascended from soils to leaves to sustain a core leaf taxa. The core taxa formed a close association with a prevalent foliar pathogen in the co-occurrence network and significantly attenuated the expression of a set of essential virulence genes in pathogen. Our study unveils the mechanism underpinning microbiome assembly in the tea plants, and a potential implication of the microbiome-mediated resilience framework on the phyllosphere homeostasis. Understanding how a plant allocates biomass for reproduction and the effect of location position on twigs' biomass partitioning provides essential information on how to maximise fruit yields through pruning. Fengdan (Paeonia ostii) is a variety of oil Peony newly developed in China. In this paper, the pattern of biomass allocation and allometric growth of the modules within twig (fruit twigs) of five populations of Fengdan were investigated by using standardised major axis (SMA) analyses. The ANOVA results showed that the biomass of stem, seed, husk and fruit per twig significantly varied among populations and among twigs growing at different positions within an individual plant. The top twig had the largest stem and fruit biomass. Twig showed an allometric growth relationship between reproduction and growth (SMA slope b ≠ 1). An obvious trade‐off was found between seed number and 100‐seed weight in fruits. These findings demonstrate that the seated position of the Fengdan twig significantly influences its resource allocation pattern and fruit (seed) yield, implying the efficiency of creating a suitable growth environment and optimising tree architecture in increasing oil Peony yield. In China, lots of Cyclocarya paliurus plantations have been established for tea and functional food production on nitrogen (N)-limited land. The optimum N levels require for biosynthesis and accumulation of carbon-based bioactive substances vary among plant species. This study integrated field trial with hydroponic culture to assess impact of nitrogen addition on accumulation and relative gene expression level of carbon-based secondary metabolites in C. paliurus. N addition significantly influenced not only contents of polyphenols, flavonoids and triterpenoids and relative gene expression levels of their biosynthetic pathway in C. paliurus leaves but also leaf biomass production and the bioactive substance accumulations. An intermediate N addition induced the highest contents of polyphenols, flavonoids and triterpenoids in leaves, but the optimized accumulation of these bioactive substances in the leaves was the trade-off between their contents and leaf biomass production. Correlation analysis showed that related gene expression levels were closely correlated with contents of their leaf corresponding secondary metabolites. Compared with ratios of carbon/N (C/N) and carbon/phosphorus (C/P) in the soil, ratios of C/N and C/P in the leaves were more strongly related to the contents and accumulations of polyphenols, flavonoids and triterpenoids. To obtain higher yields of targeted phytochemicals, the threshold ratios of C/N and C/P in the leaves are recommended for N and P fertilization at similar sites. Overall, our findings would provide the theoretical basis and technical support for manipulating N fertilization in C. paliurus plantations to obtain higher accumulations of targeted bioactive substances. • Nitrogen addition markedly affected leaf biomass and the bioactive substance contents. • Intermediate nitrogen addition induced a higher content of leaf bioactive substances. • Bioactive substance contents were positively correlated with related gene expressions. • Accumulation of the bioactives was a trade-off between its content and leaf biomass. • Leaf nutrient stoichiometry is better related to the bioactives accumulation than the soil. The size and number of eggs are important components of reproductive strategies, with implications for offspring and parental fitness. Birds typically produce larger clutches in more poleward latitudes, in response to the strong seasonal peak of food availability required to raise young. However, changes in egg size impact the interpretation of this pattern, and latitudinal variation in egg size remains poorly explored. Here we comparatively investigate this issue at both interspecific and intraspecific levels, using datasets from 298 populations of 154 passerine species breeding in mainland China. Clutch size was larger toward the north, but egg size was relatively constant and therefore total clutch volume (clutch size × egg size) increased. No negative correlation was evident between egg size and clutch size along latitudinal gradients, suggesting the lack of a direct trade‐off between the two traits. This may be explained by latitudinally increased food availability and concentrated annual reproductive investment due to seasonal time constraints on raising more broods, arising from the later onset of reproduction at higher latitudes. In addition, the latitudinal patterns of egg size and clutch size appear to be independent of parental investment in terms of the lengths of incubation and nestling periods, which were similar for lower‐ and higher‐latitude birds. Microbes, especially abundant microbes in bulk soils, form multiple ecosystem functions, which is relatively well studied. However, the role of rhizosphere microbes, especially rhizosphere rare taxa vs. rhizosphere abundant taxa in regulating the element circling, multifunctionality, aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) and the trade-offs of multiple functions remains largely unknown. Here, we compared the multiple ecosystem functions, the structure and function of rhizosphere soil bacterial and fungal subcommunities (locally rare, locally abundant, regionally rare, regionally abundant, and entire), and the role of subcommunities in the Zea mays and Sophora davidii sole and Z. mays/S. davidii intercropping ecosystems in subtropical China. Results showed that intercropping altered multiple ecosystem functions individually and simultaneously. Intercropped Z. mays significantly decreased the trade-off intensity compared to sole Z. mays, the trade-off intensity under intercropped S. davidii was significantly higher than under intercropped Z. mays. The beta diversities of bacterial and fungal communities, and fungal functions in each subcommunity significantly differed among groups. Network analysis showed intercropping increased the complexity and positive links of rare bacteria in Z. mays rhizosphere, but decreased the complexity and positive links of rare bacteria in S. davidii rhizosphere and the complexity and positive links of fungi in both intercropped plants rhizosphere. Mantel test showed significant changes in species of locally rare bacteria were most strongly related to nitrogen-cycling multifunctionality, ANPP and trade-offs intensity, significant changes in species of locally rare fungus were most strongly related to carbon-cycling multifunctionality, phosphorus-cycling multifunctionality, and average ecosystem multifunctionality. Signals containing parameter trade‐offs are likely to be honest indicators of signaler quality because they are difficult to produce. Signals with a trill‐rate/bandwidth trade‐off have been described for many songbird species, one mouse, and one non‐human primate species. However, there were no reports about whether there is a vocal performance trade‐off in social calls of bats. This study investigated (1) a possible vocal performance trade‐off in territorial calls of male Great Himalayan leaf‐nosed bats, Hipposideros armiger, recorded from 9 locations in south China, and (2) the relationships between vocal performance (vocal deviation and consistency) and caller's quality (body mass) to determine whether vocal performance honestly indicates a caller's quality. Vocal deviation measures the deviation of a call relative to an extreme call and vocal consistency measures the spectral consistency across a string of syllables. Our results showed a significant negative correlation between syllable repetition rate and frequency bandwidth, suggesting a vocal performance trade‐off similar to the one in songbirds. Further, there was a significant negative relationship between body mass and vocal deviation, but no significant correlation between body mass and vocal consistency. This study provides the first empirical evidence for a vocal performance trade‐off of social calls in bats, and the potential for the level of performance to indicate caller quality. Locusta migratoria manilensis is one of the most important agricultural pests in China. The locust has high fecundity and consumes large quantities of food, causing severe damage to diverse crops such as corn, sorghum, and rice. Immunity against pathogens and reproductive success are two important components of individual fitness, and many insects have a trade-off between reproduction and immunity when resources are limited, which may be an important target for pest control. In this study, adult females L. migratoria manilensis were treated with different concentrations (5 x 106 spores/mL or 2 x 107 spores/mL) of the entomopathogenic fungus Paranosema locustae. Effects of input to immunity on reproduction were studied by measuring feeding amount, enzyme activity, vitellogenin (Vg) and vitellogenin receptor (VgR) production, ovary development, and oviposition amount. When infected by P. locustae, feeding rate and phenol oxidase and lysozyme activities increased, mRNA expression of Vg and VgR genes decreased, and yolk deposition was blocked. Weight of ovaries decreased, with significant decreases in egg, length and weight.Thus, locusts used nutritive input required for reproduction to resist invasion by microsporidia. This leads to a decrease in expression of Vg and VgR genes inhibited ovarian development, and greatly decreased total fecundity. P. locustae at 2 x 107 spores/mL had a more obvious inhibitory effect on the ovarian development in migratory locusts. This study provides a detailed tradeoff between reproduction and immune input of the female, which provides a reliable basis to find pest targets for biological control from those tradeoff processes. Identifying the response characteristics of ecosystem service value (ESV) to changes in spatial scales, known as spatial scale effects, is crucial in guiding the development of corresponding management strategies. This paper examines ESV in China's terrestrial area during the year 2020, revealing the spatial aggregation characteristics of ESV and the trade-off and synergistic relationships of ecosystem services at different spatial scales, ranging from 1 km × 1 km-10 km × 10 km, with a gradient of 1 km. The results indicate: 1) The distribution pattern of ESV in China's terrestrial area is "high in the southeast and low in the northwest." 2) The spatial characteristics of ESV in China's terrestrial area undergo a distinct transition at the 3 km × 3 km scale. In detail, the spatial clustering features show a trend of first rising and then falling with the increase in spatial scale, while the synergistic relationships between different ecosystem services strengthen and the trade-off relationships weaken with the increase of the spatial scale. Harmful cyanobacterial blooms in eutrophic water bodies pose a major threat to the environment and to human health. The morphological functional traits of cyanobacteria play important roles in maintaining their competitive advantages. To explore the regulatory mechanisms of the morphological functional traits of different bloom-forming cyanobacteria, we performed a one-year-long phytoplankton survey from November 2016 to October 2017 in Lake Chaohu, China. The colony size and cell diameter of the dominant cyanobacteria were measured, and their relationships were analyzed. The results showed that Dolichospermum flos-aquae and Microcystis aeruginosa were the dominant cyanobacteria in the lake. Microcystis was the dominant species during the summer; the growth of Dolichospermum growth surpassed that of Microcystis, and Dolichospermum became the dominant species in the late autumn, winter and spring. From winter to spring, the colony size of Dolichospermum decreased from 222.25 μm to 10.51 μm, and the individual cell diameter increased from 6.5 μm to 7.4 μm. From summer to autumn, Dolichospermum showed enlarged colony sizes and reduced cell diameters. The Microcystis colony size increased from 83.71 μm in the spring to 196.71 μm in the summer and autumn, while cells diameter remained essentially at 3–4 μm from March to October in Lake Chaohu. The relationship between colony size and cell diameter in Dolichospermum was significantly positive, while that of Microcystis was not significant. These results suggest that Dolichospermum may maintain biomass through a trade-off between cell diameter and colony size, and that a flexible morphological regulatory mechanism exists. Land consolidation has greatly altered land use patterns and the corresponding ecosystem services (ES) in China. However, the potential consequences of different consolidation measures for the interaction of ecosystem services are still largely unknown. Here, from a simulation perspective, we predict potential separate and joint influences of three land consolidation scenarios, i.e., reclamation of abandoned mining land, intensive construction land use and their integrated scenario, on the tradeoff/ synergic relationships of food production, carbon storage, habitat quality, and water conservation. Zhaoyuan city, one of China's top 100 counties at a green transformation stage of mining industry, is taken as a case study. Our results show that land consolidation will significantly mitigate the loss of farmland and vegetation while improving use efficiency of construction land. By 2035, food production is likely to present more trade-offs with other ES, whereas carbon storage, habitat quality, and water conservation will be highly synergic with each other. In contrast, consolidation of rural/urban construction land will be more feasible to coordinate multiple ecosystem services, as well as mitigating urban expansion and rural hollowing. How do offspring size and number vary along elevational gradients? This is a striking but rarely addressed question in life-history evolution. Here we comparatively explore it using phylogenetically paired passerine birds of lowland China vs. the Tibetan plateau spanning an elevational range of 18–4500 m. Toward the Tibetan plateau, egg size increased, clutch size decreased and total clutch volume (= clutch size × egg size) did not change, when accounting for major confounding factors. Larger eggs and smaller clutches can be a response to harsh abiotic conditions at higher elevations and the corresponding reduction in food resources required for raising young, respectively. There was a negative correlation between egg size and clutch size after controlling for elevation effect on either trait, suggesting that the trade-off contributed to the expression of these two traits across elevations, given the lack of an elevational trend in total clutch volume. Tibetan birds had a shorter breeding season, prolonged incubation and nestling period than their lowland counterparts. While fewer clutches over the short breeding season may facilitate the increase in egg size, the concentration of annual reproductive investment did not seem to act on clutch size; despite the smaller clutches, hard environments may impose greater costs of parental care on Tibetan birds. Studies have attributed cross-cultural variation in consumer phenomena to cultural effects without considering other factors, likely leading to false conclusions. This study seeks to clarify whether the effects of culture on cruising preferences are influenced by other elements. First, cruising attributes were identified using a mixed-methods approach. Conjoint analysis was then conducted to examine travelers' preferences for cruising attributes using data collected in China and America. Finally, within-culture and cross-cultural comparison were performed. Results revealed the role of trade-offs and the joint effects of culture and past experience on cruising preferences. China has set a carbon neutrality target for 2060; carbon sinks are vital tools to meet this target. China is leading the effort in greening the world through the restoration of low‐carbon density ecosystems (LCDEs). The potential carbon sinks of LCDEs provide opportunities for carbon trading projects that make cash benefits accessible to the owners, thereby incentivising ecosystem restoration. Unfortunately, carbon trading in LCDEs has, to date, been unsuccessful in China. Therefore, it is important to identify the barriers in the development of carbon trading projects in LCDEs.This study aimed at creating a feasible model for carbon trading in LCDEs in China. We first accounted for the carbon sink of LCDEs based on field sampling of 169 quadrants and 3,471 plants. Thereafter, we investigated the trade‐off between the cost and efficiency of carbon projects in LCDEs. Finally, we explored the feasibility of corresponding carbon sink potential by considering carbon price fluctuations and public–private partnership models.The main findings were as follows: (a) Carbon trading in LCDEs is not economically feasible at the current market price of carbon. In our case, the LCDE carbon trading could only recover 41.72% of the project cost. This partially explains the scarcity of carbon trading for LCDEs in the current emission trading scheme; (b) A benefit transfer model is essential, wherein the costs of ecosystem restoration are paid by the central government, and the benefits of carbon trade are transferred to the owners of LCDEs, providing sufficient incentives for the owners to participate in carbon trading.Policy implications. Given the scarcity of large‐scale organisations and expertise, carbon trading in low‐carbon density ecosystems (LCDEs) should not be treated as a purely commercial project. A public–private partnership network is a suitable model for engaging stakeholders to complete the carbon trading process in LCDEs. For the success of carbon trading in LCDEs, viable carbon prices and transfer of benefits from public investments are policy issues that need to be further explored. Global grassland degradation has prompted professionals and practitioners to critically consider about the future of grassland resources. Restoration actions related to payment for ecosystem services (PES) have been proposed as a possible approach to balancing grassland sustainable development and ecosystem service supply. Since 2005, approximately one billion U.S. dollars have been invested in the Three-River Headwater Region (TRHR) of China to restore 5.69 × 106 ha of degraded grasslands via grassland cultivation and fencing. Unfortunately, few literature has drawn valid and generalizable conclusions regarding the economic performance of these PES programs. Therefore, field data from multiple sites were collected to evaluate the economic returns of restoration actions, returns on investments (ROI), and trade-offs among ecosystem services of cultivated and fenced grasslands over different restoration years in the TRHR. The results revealed that PES-related restoration efforts in the TRHR had yielded a net profit of $14.34 billion, with $13.20 billion from the alpine meadow, $0.74 billion from the alpine steppe and $0.40 billion from the temperate steppe. These substantial economic can be attributed to the combined effects of the surge in specific ecosystem services and the synergistic improvement of all ecosystem services. The ROI of supporting service accounted for the largest proportion of ROI in total ecosystem services and exhibited drastic fluctuations with restoration years, whereas the ROI of other services either increased gradually or remained stable across different restoration periods. The trade-offs in ecosystem services varied greatly with grassland type. We observed an increasing synchronization of ecosystem services over time in the fenced alpine steppe, cultivated alpine meadow, and cultivated temperate steppe; whereas a similar trend was not detected in other grasslands. Our research underscores the importance of incorporating herders' willingness, assessing restoration performance of grasslands and adopting more targeted and adaptive restoration actions in subsequent PES programs. • PES helped balance sustainable development and ecosystem conservation. • Multiple site data was collected to explore ecological returns of restoration actions. • Restoration actions with PES programs had yielded a net profit of $14.34 billion. • Gains were owed to surge of specific ecosystem services and synergy of all services. • Herders' willingness and more targeted actions should be considered in next steps. Ecosystem services are directly related to human well-being. Previous studies showed that management policies and human activities alter the trade-offs and synergies of ecosystem services. Taking effective measures to manage the trade-offs and synergies of ecosystem services is essential to sustain ecological security and achieve a "win-win" situation between society and ecosystems. This study investigated the spatiotemporal changes of water yield, soil conservation, and carbon sequestration in the Jiulianshan National Nature Reserve from 2000 to 2020 based on the InVEST model. We distinguished spatial patterns of trade-offs and synergies between ecosystem services using the correlation relationship analysis. Then we analyzed the response of ecosystem services relationships among different vegetation types and elevation bands. The results showed that water yield and carbon sequestration presented an overall upward trend, while soil conservation remained a marginal degradation. Rising ecosystem services were mainly in the central, western, and southeastern regions, and declining areas were mainly distributed in the midwestern and northeastern fringes. Synergies spatially dominated the interactions among water yield, soil conservation, and carbon sequestration, and the trade-offs were primarily concentrated in the northern, southern, and southwestern fringes. Among the different vegetation types, synergies dominated ecosystem services in broad-leaved forests, coniferous forests, mixed forests, and Moso bamboo forests and in grass. The trade-offs were gradually reduced with elevation. This study highlighted that trade-off of ecosystem services should be incorporated into ecological management policies, strengthening the effectiveness of nature reserves in protecting and improving China's ecosystem services. In the following paper, I examine the considerable impact of the recent world-economic shift that has determined the circumstances of Hungarian suppliers' value-chain integration. I argue that as a result of the specialized positions they occupied in the value-chain after the collapse of the Comecon market, Hungarian enterprises in export-oriented industries faced a dilemma--a trade-off between obtaining the most advanced technologies (and thus access to world-market niches) and retaining ownership in the hands of domestic capital. When company managers opted to protect ownership with the help of the state, they exposed themselves to greater risk of downgrading their position in the value chain. If they managed to get access to advanced technologies (and the requisite funding), they were more likely to lose control over their company's assets, either as a result of a hostile takeover or becoming part of the larger partner's merger-and-acquisition plans. This paper is a discussion of some of the particular characteristics of this dilemma, as well as a comparison with the experience of Hungarian service providers who implemented a different strategy. This paper is also a critical assessment of some of the chief characteristics of the world-economic evolution that has been underway since 2009, such as German automotive value chains' expansion in the CEE region and the growing role of Chinese capital in regional infrastructural projects. Traditional soybean (Glycine max L.) breeding has improved seed yield in high-input agricultural systems, under high nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) supply. The seed yield improvements under non-P supply and the seed protein and mineral content dilution by yield improvement were evaluated in 18 soybean cultivars released from 1995 to 2016 in south-east China. Soybean varieties were grown under rainfed conditions in the field under 0 and 35 kg P ha−1 in four sites: Dafang and Shiqian in the growing season of 2017 and Dafang and Puding in the 2018 season. The seed yield, seed protein content and nine seed nutrition concentration were examined. Soybean seed yield increased with the year of release at rates of 5.5–6.7 g m−2 year−1 under 35 kg P ha−1 and 3.9–4.8 g m−2 year−1 under non-P supply in the four experiments. The increase resulted from increases in the number of filled-pods and total seed number rather than from single seed weight and number of seeds per pod. Seed protein content and seed nutrition concentration has not changed with the year of release under 0 and 35 kg P ha−1. Grain yield was positively correlated with the seed Fe concentration. The cultivar superiority of seed yield, seed P, Zn and Ca concentration was negatively correlated with their static stability coefficient. Traditional soybean breeding increased yield under both P and non-P supply, without affecting seed protein content and mineral concentrations. A trade-off between high seed yield and seed P, Zn and Ca concentration and their stability under different environments was shown. Whether traditional soybean (Glycine max L.) breeding can improve seed yield in low-input agricultural systems was not well known. In this study, we found: (1) traditional soybean breeding increased yield under both P and non-P supply, without affecting seed protein content and mineral concentrations; (2) a trade-off between high seed yield and seed P, Zn and Ca concentration, as affected by different environments. Trees can build fine-root systems with high variation in root size (e.g., fine-root diameter) and root number (e.g., branching pattern) to optimize belowground resource acquisition in forest ecosystems. Compared with leaves, which are visible above ground, information about the distribution and inequality of fine-root size and about key associations between fine-root size and number is still limited. We collected 27,573 first-order fine-roots growing out of 3,848 second-order fine-roots, covering 51 tree species in three temperate forests (Changbai Mountain, CBS; Xianrendong, XRD; and Maoershan, MES) in Northeastern China. We investigated the distribution and inequality of fine-root length, diameter and area (fine-root size), and their trade-off with fine-root branching intensity and ratio (fine-root number). Our results showed a strong right-skewed distribution in first-order fine-root size across various tree species. Unimodal frequency distributions were observed in all three of the sampled forests for first-order fine-root length and area and in CBS and XRD for first-order fine-root diameter, whereas a marked bimodal frequency distribution of first-order fine-root diameter appeared in MES. Moreover, XRD had the highest and MES had the lowest inequality values (Gini coefficients) in first-order fine-root diameter. First-order fine-root size showed a consistently linear decline with increasing root number. Our findings suggest a common right-skewed distribution with unimodality or bimodality of fine-root size and a generalized trade-off between fine-root size and number across the temperate tree species. Purpose: This study aims to explore how team task-related social media usage (TSMU) and social-related social media usage (SSMU) affect employees' perceptions of intra-team cooperation and competition and further individual creativity. Design/methodology/approach: This study conducted a questionnaire survey on enterprises in China that have implemented social media and obtained 348 useable questionnaires from 55 work teams. Findings: The results revealed that employees' perceptions of intra-team cooperation and competition can promote employees' creativity. Employees' cooperation perception can be significantly positively affected by TSMU and SSMU, whereas employees' competition perception can be significantly positively affected by TSMU. Regarding congruence, the results indicated that the more balanced between TSMU and SSMU, the stronger the competition perception. Practical implications: Managers should pay critical attention to the role of team social media usage (SMU) in shaping employees' perceptions of their team environments. They should realize the different outcomes and the joint effects of the different types of SMU. Originality/value: This study contributes to the social media literature by explaining the impact of team SMU on employees' perceptions and evaluations of team environments based on the social information processing theory. The study presents the relationships among team SMU, employees' perceptions of cooperation and competition and employee creativity. For the sustainable development of human beings and society, it is important to conserve the ecosystems and alleviate poverty in the low agricultural productivity or ecologically vulnerable areas. To avoid the decrease in ecosystem services (ES) under the effects associated with reducing poverty, we need to carefully consider the relationship between land use changes and the economic development in economically poor areas. We selected the Lingqiu County as our study area, which is a national impoverished county in China, and analyzed the impact of poverty alleviation efforts on the ecological and economic sustainability in the region through ES evaluation. The results showed that land use change in the Lingqiu County has not changed the ES significantly during 2007–2016. The gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate (15.81%) during 2001–2016, indicates the effectiveness of the poverty alleviation efforts implemented. The rise in the index of ecological and economic relationship during 2001–2016 (from 0.2389 to 0.3629) maintains in a harmonious coordination situation. Presently, the value of ES has not been converted to market-based benefits, and therefore, it is indispensable to find a marketplace for ES (in an innovative way) to promote the high-quality sustainable development of a local economy. Increasing socioecological systems (SESs) sustainability requires establishing a reasonable cross-regional social and ecological interaction. In this study, we examine how cross-regional ecological and social interactions affect synergistic effects. Using InVEST and correlation analysis with data from 2010 through 2020, we assessed ESs (i.e., water retention-WR, nutrient retention-NR, and carbon storage-CS) in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region. A small watershed, a river network, and settlement development capacity are used to delineate ecological and social interactions units. Based on a Bayesian network model that considers population, economy, and spatial agglomeration patterns between social units, we assessed the potential for achieving a synergistic improvement of ESs and the driving forces behind them. The results show that ESs in the BTH region compete, only a small percentage (6.38%) shows synergetic improvement across CS, WR, and NR. It is beneficial for upstream watersheds to retain water and nutrients, but to maintain carbon storage they may sacrifice water retention. Upstream areas with less development and higher vegetation density have better ecosystem integrity of up- and down-stream watersheds, and can be enhanced with minimal human impact, as social interactions and settlement spatial structures influence ES synergies. Coordination and consensus in collective behavior have attracted a lot of research interest. Although previous studies have investigated the role of compromisers in group consensus, they provide little insight into why compromisers would allow such social arrangements to persist. In this study, the potential relationship between group movements and conflict management in Tibetan macaques in Anhui province, China, was investigated using hierarchical cluster analyses. Some members with higher social centrality or social rank often formed a front-runner cluster during group movements. They had higher leadership success than individuals outside the front-runner cluster. Other members with lower social centrality or social rank often followed the group movements initiated by the front-runner cluster, and thus formed the compromiser cluster. Compromisers' proximity relations with front-runners increased with their following scores to front-runners. Compromisers had fewer events of being attacked when they followed group movements initiated by the front-runners. The compromising process made compromisers lose the choice of direction preference, but it could increase their individual safeties. This trade-off suggests that compromisers play a role of decision-maker in coordination and consensus scenarios among social animals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Within a short period, rapid urbanization has reshaped China's eco-environment, especially at the beginning of the new century. Many studies have focused on the changes in certain physical indicators of eco-environments; however, these indicators cannot directly explain or only slightly consider the eco-environmental benefits of urban residents. Therefore, we analysed location-based population-weighted eco-environmental changes with indicators of the vegetation index and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentration at each pixel in China's prefectures and combined the changes with urban expansion to provide an expanded understanding of the transformation of China's urbanization and its eco-environmental dynamics. We discovered that China's urban areas expanded by 38,350 km2 from 2000 to 2015 with an increase in the population-weighted vegetation and PM2.5 concentration, but the changes varied among different periods. From 2005 to 2010, urban areas expanded by 20,970 km2 with an increase in the population-weighted vegetation and PM2.5 concentration. The period from 2000 to 2005 was a key transforming period that experienced an urban expansion of 9081 km2 with a decrease in the population-weighted vegetation and an increase in the population-weighted PM2.5 concentration. An urban expansion of 8299 km2 with an increase in the population-weighted vegetation and a decrease of the population-weighted PM2.5 concentration occurred from 2010 to 2015. Water, energy, and food are essential resources for human survival. The trade-off among these resources can limit regional economic development and pose challenges to livelihood security. In this study, we constructed a root-mean-square deviation (RMSD) index to measure the water-energy-food nexus (WEFN) trade-off. Multi-source data and analysis methods, including ordinary least square (OLS), geographically weighted regression (GWR), and geographic detectors (GD) are employed to explore the trade-offs of water, energy, and food resources and their dominant influencing factors in the Mu Us Sandy Land. The results indicate that the trade-off between regional water-food sub-nexus exhibited the highest magnitude, and trade-offs among all sub-nexus types demonstrated significant fluctuations in spatial distribution. Both OLS and GWR results identified temperature, precipitation, normalized differential vegetation index, slope, digital elevation model, and nighttime light as significant factors influencing the spatial differentiation of WEFN trade-offs. Moreover, geographic detector analysis indicated that precipitation is the dominant factor, and its interaction with other influencing factors further impacts the regional WEFN trade-off. The discussion section examines the RMSD method's effectiveness, the dominant factors shaping WEFN trade-offs, as well as scale effect in WEFN trade-offs in the Mu Us area and underscores that mitigation of water shortages can yield a leverage effect, leading to a marked reduction in the trade-offs. This research contributes new ideas and tools to WEFN research from a geographic perspective, aiming to provide guidance for collaborative resource management and regional sustainable development. With the development of social economy and the diversification of human needs there is conflict between different functions of cultivated land. In this study, a practical evaluating methodology, which is a three‐dimensional trade‐off model on multifunctionality of cultivated land was constructed, and it was applied to Panxi region of southwestern China. The following results were obtained. (a) From 2000 to 2010, the area of cultivated land decreased by 171.67 km2, which was mainly affected by urban development and ecological construction. (b) Conflict between various functions was obvious. With the passage of time, although the overall conflict declined, local conflicts increased significantly. (c) There were five kinds of conflict types, which was high‐conflict urbanization area, high‐conflict ecological area, middle‐conflict ecological area, low‐conflict traditional agricultural area, and low‐conflict ecological area. Economy, land use structure, and terrain were the main forces driving conflicts pertaining to the multifunctionality on cultivated land. (d) The three‐dimensional trade‐off model, which weighed the relationship between different functions of cultivated land, is an improved multiobjective decision‐making model for cultivated land use. It can also be applied to a range of explicit land‐use and natural resource allocation problems, and can further evolve as a result of anticipated interactions with stakeholders. Premise: The distribution and performance of bryophyte species vary with vertical gradients, as a result of changes in environmental factors, especially light. However, the morphological and physiological drivers of bryophyte distribution along forest vertical gradients are poorly understood. Methods: For 18 species of mosses and liverworts distributed among three vertical microhabitats (ground, tree trunk, and branch, variance in 28 morphological and photosynthetic functional traits was comparatively analyzed among the microhabitats and bryophyte life‐forms in a subtropical cloud forest in Ailao Mountain, Yunnan, southwestern China. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to summarize trait differences among bryophyte species. Results: In contrast to trunk and ground dwellers, branch dwellers tended to reduce light interception (smaller leaf and cell sizes, lower chlorophyll content), protect against damage from intense irradiation (higher ratios of carotenoids to chlorophyll), raise light energy use (higher photosynthetic capacity), and cope with lower environmental moisture (pendant life‐forms, thicker cell walls). The PCA showed that ecological strategies of bryophytes in response to levels of irradiation were specialized in branch dwellers, although those of ground and trunk dwellers were less distinct. Conclusions: Environmental filtering shaped the combination of functional traits and the spatial distribution of bryophytes along the vertical gradients. Bryophyte species from the upper canopy of cloud forests show narrow variation in functional traits in high‐light intensity, whereas species in the lower vertical strata associated with low‐light intensity used contrasting, but more diverse ecological strategies. Complex urban air quality has long been assessed by a single (or major) contaminant, for example, fine particulate matter (PM2.5), but scant attention has been given to multicontaminant air pollution, especially in countries with severe air pollution, for example, China. We thus proposed an improved method for quantifying both single‐ and multicontaminant air pollution. Our approach uses China's major cities as an example because they have an operational national urban air quality monitoring network. We found that our proposed method could remove the duplicated consideration under both single‐ and multicontaminant conditions, thus proving to be an improved and more accurate way to understand complex urban air pollution conditions. Our method involved monitoring 3 contaminants (PM2.5, PM10, and SO2) in cities in Shanxi, Shandong, Henan, and Hebei Provinces and 2 contaminants (PM2.5 and PM10) in the cities between the Yellow River and the Yangtze River, and these pollutants were the major contributors to multicontaminant air pollution. We argue that both the research community and the government should pay increased attention to multicontaminant air pollution beyond the current single major pollutant–based air pollution method when building a sustainable city. The chive maggot, Bradysia odoriphaga (Yang and Zhang) is an economically important insect pest, affecting many key vegetables, including Chinese chive, especially in northern China. Chlorfenapyr, a halogenated pyrrole insecticide that interferes with mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation is widely used against B. odoriphaga. In this study, we evaluated selection-induced resistance to chlorfenapyr and fitness costs in B. odoriphaga. The results showed that B. odoriphaga developed 43.32-fold resistance after continuous exposure to chlorfenapyr for over 10 consecutive generations. The life-history traits of chlorfenapyr-resistant and susceptible strains were compared using age-stage, two-sex life table approach. No significant effects were observed on the longevity and pre-adult period. However, reduction in the total pre-oviposition period (TPOP) and fecundity (eggs/female) were observed in the resistant strain. Moreover, the demographic parameters such as intrinsic rate of increase (r), net reproductive rate (R0) and finite rate of increase (λ) were also decreased significantly in the resistant strain compared to the susceptible strain. These results showed the potential of B. odoriphaga to develop resistance against chlorfenapyr under continuous selection pressure. Furthermore, there was a fitness cost linked with chlorfenapyr resistance in B. odoriphaga. We conclude that a better knowlegde on the trade-off at play between resistance degree and fitness cost could be crucial for developing further management of B. odoriphaga in China. In socially monogamous species with bi-parental care, males may face a trade-off between providing parental care and pursuing extra-pair matings. The "parenting-mating trade-off" hypothesis predicts that high-quality males—who have greater potential to gain extra-pair matings, for example, larger males usually win the competition for extra-pair mating—should reduce parental care and spend more time looking for extra-pair matings. However, the trade-off between parenting and mating efforts may be complicated by variation in the availability of extra-pair mating opportunities. By using field data of hair-crested drongos (Dicrurus hottentottus), a species exhibiting bi-parental incubation behavior, collected in central China from 2010 to 2017, we tested whether the potential negative relationship between male quality and paternal care was dependent on the number of nearby fertile females. We found that male drongos mainly seek extra-pair matings during the incubation period and high-quality individuals (males with longer tarsi) are more likely to sire extra-pair offspring. In agreement with the "parenting-mating trade-off" hypothesis, high-quality males incubated less by recessing longer between incubation bouts. However, this was only the case when sufficient fertile females nearby for extra-pair mating opportunities. Females compensated for reduced male care, but this was independent of male quality. This suggests that the reduction in care by high-quality males might be a direct response to extra-pair mating opportunities rather than facilitated by differential allocation of females. Economic losses and inequities caused by uncertainties in the availability of water intensify the competition between water sectors, making the allocation of water rights of vital importance for minimizing water conflicts. In this study, an Interval-parameter Two-stage Stochastic Programming (ITSP) model for water rights allocation is developed that contains an industrial allocation preference coefficient and involves the risk control of Conditional Value-at-Risk theory and Gini coefficient constraints (ITSP-CG). Using China's Taihu Basin as a case study, it is shown that optimized water rights allocation schemes can reduce the risk of inequitable localized water deficits, a narrower confidence interval results in higher economic loss, and, when the confidence level is fixed, tighter control of water availability results in water efficient sectors having an increasing preference for allocation schemes. It is also shown that Basin Authorities need to trade-off the equitable allocation of water rights and economic returns over a particular planning period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Large lianas and trees in the forest canopy are challenged by hydraulic and mechanical failures and need to balance hydraulic conductivity, hydraulic safety and mechanical safety. Our study integrates these functions in canopy branches to understand the performance of canopy trees and lianas, and their difference. We sampled and measured branches from 22 species at a canopy crane in the tropical forest at Xishuangbanna, SW China. We quantified the hydraulic conductivity from the xylem-specific hydraulic conductivity (K S), hydraulic safety from the cavitation resistance (P 50) and mechanical safety from the modulus of rupture (MOR) to evaluate trade-offs and differences between lianas and trees. We also measured a number of anatomical features that may influence these three functional traits. Our results suggest the following: trade-offs between hydraulic conductivity, hydraulic safety and mechanical safety are weak or absent; liana branches better resist external mechanical forces (higher MOR) than tree branches; and liana and tree branches were similar in hydraulic performance (K S and P 50). The anatomical features underlying K S, P 50 and MOR may differ between lianas and trees. We conclude that canopy branches of lianas and trees diverged in mechanical design due to fundamental differences in wood formation, but converged in hydraulic design. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Life-history theory predicts a trade-off between the juvenile growth rate and adult traits related to survival. However, this hypothesized negative correlation is difficult to test robustly because many trade-offs are mild, and environmental variables, such as changes in nutrient availability, can ameliorate the trade-off or make it more pronounced. Thus, it is reasonable to expect that the expression of the trade-off can be condition-dependent. In the present study, we first examined the pre-adult life-history traits of the cotton bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera , collected from northern, central, and southern China at different temperatures. We found that the northern China population has a significantly shorter pre-adult developmental time and higher growth rate than the southern China population as a result of adaptation to the decreased seasonal length. Then, we tested for a trade-off between the juvenile growth rate and adult lifespan in different temperature and nutrient conditions. We found a negative relationship between juvenile growth rate and adult lifespan under starvation or desiccation conditions; however, a continuous supply of sugar can diminish or obviate the apparent negative relationship, in which the adult lifespan did not show a significant difference in most of the comparisons. These results suggested a resource-mediated trade-off may exist between juvenile growth rate and adult lifespan. However, the adult size may have some positive effect on the lifespan under starvation and desiccation conditions, which may affect the expression of trade-off. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cropland encroachment on protected areas causes natural habitat loss, which may damage ecosystem functions and biodiversity conservation, leading to trade-offs between crop production and habitat conservation. Here we investigate the sustainable utilization and effects of cropland within protected areas, on which we make trade-offs with an established framework. Analyses show that 3.08 million hectares of cropland are identified within protected areas, about two-thirds less sustainable or less beneficial. 41 % and 26 % are expected to be retired for inferior sustainability and effects under the strictest and laxest habitat protection scenario, respectively. Although these retirements would cause a loss of crop benefits of 0.3-0.7 billion US dollars, they could bring ecological benefits of 2.9-3.6 billion US dollars annually. Approximately 11 % of cropland within protected areas is identified in poor agricultural conditions, and 19 % occupies areas of high protection importance, both of which are recommended for priority retirement. It has great significance to study the trade-off mechanism of productive and dwelling space of rural settlement and the optimized of its productive and dwelling space nowadays in China, which is one of the basic means to improve the rural habitat environment and adjust the inner structure of rural residential land. With the development of socio-economic, productive and dwelling space of rural settlements gradually diversified in developed areas such as suburban areas and industrial areas in eastern China, which present reciprocal tradeoffs. These changes distinguish from the abandonment and hollowing of productive and dwelling space of rural settlements in traditional agricultural area. However, current researches mainly consider the rural settlement as a single entity and tend to neglect its inner productive and dwelling space. This paper introduces the concept of ecosystem service trade-off, analyzes the trade-off between productive space and dwelling space of rural settlements in economically developed areas from the aspects of “types of trade-off, driving forces, effects,” and then this paper puts forward the idea of optimizing the productive and dwelling space of rural settlement. The results show that, the trade-off of productive and dwelling space of rural settlements which in developed areas, is caused by the diversification of farmers' livelihood and the development of non-agricultural industries in rural areas, farmers have a demand for living apace, industrial and commercial space, and choose various functional spaces according to their needs. According to the spatial combination of productive space and dwelling space of rural settlement, the trade-off types can be divided into residential-industrial space trade-off, residential-commercial space trade-off, residential-rental space trade-off, multi-space trade-off and so on. Land use versatility and the diversification of productive and dwelling space of rural settlement that driven by industrialization and urbanization is the premise of the productive and dwelling space trade-off of rural settlement. The types and its variations of productive and dwelling space trade-off of rural settlement are directly determined by the livelihood and life needs of farmers. While the land plan control by the government and the lack of village planning has exacerbated the process of the productive and dwelling space trade-off of rural settlement. The trade-off of productive and dwelling space of rural settlement improves the livelihoods of farmers and promotes the economic development and the vitality of rural areas, but also causes a variety of negative effects, such as the spatial clutter of rural settlements, the deterioration of human living environment and other problems. The reconstruction model of rural settlement as homogeneous space is far from the needs of farmers. In the future, under the background of the shortage of construction land in rural areas, it is necessary to meet the diversified demands of farmers and the optimizing of the productive and dwelling space of rural settlement by the multifunctional composite and functional improvement of land use of rural settlement. This paper puts forward the concept of productive and dwelling space trade-off of rural settlement, which provides a new perspective for the study of rural residential transition and a new idea for improving the rural space quality and the residential living environment, and promotes the formation of scientific and reasonable village planning. • We developed a framework to find the relationships among yield, quality and revenue. • We defined the optimum quality concept for food production. • We applied the framework to a case study of French Fries potato production in China. • The revenue gap (43%) was partly related to the yield gap (26%), and to quality aspects (dry matter concentration). • Enhancing yield was associated with improved quality and revenue. The concept of yield gap is well-known to benchmark yields of crops. However, quality is another major aspect that influences farm revenues and drives management. Increasing yield may not be economically viable if this is at the expense of degrading quality such that revenue is negatively influenced. This study aimed to answer the question whether yield and quality could be maximized at the same time. A framework was developed to assess crop performance based on yield, quality, and revenue. The framework includes seven steps from identifying the important quality traits to quantifying quality gaps and yield gaps and their influence on revenue. The framework enriches the yield gap notion by adding quality aspects. The concept of optimum quality (Qp) was introduced as the quality value (range) of a particular quality trait that is most desired for a specific market. The framework was applied to a case study concerning potato production for a French Fries factory in China. Three quality traits of potato were assessed (i.e., dry matter percentage, tuber size classes, and number of tubers in 10 kg). No trade-off between yield and quality was found for the tested quality traits. The results indicated that there was large scope to improve quality for some of the quality traits. The relative revenue gap (Eg-f) was large (43%), and was attributed to both the relative yield gap (Yg-f, 26%), and quality aspects (i.e., low dry matter percentage and high small tuber weight percentage). China now accounts for over 2/3 of the world's production of marine-based seafood. Chinese mariculture has contributed to the stability of the global food supply, but millions of tons of excess feed and drugs are threatening the sustainability of the waters in which it is conducted. Over 26% of the excess nitrogen in China's waters is likely a result of shrimp production alone, worsening eutrophication and the resulting 'red tide' in China. While some Chinese operations require the destruction of carbon-rich wetlands, the sector as a whole can be considered a net CO 2 sink at the immediate time of harvest; each year, Chinese mariculture extracts the same quantity of CO 2 from the atmosphere as 5000 km2 of forest. Novel technical practices, improved management of the harvested products in the food versus industrial supply chain, optimized sea-use and land-use plans, and the encouragement of participatory decision-making by provincial entities offer some promise to ensure the sustainability of this global public resource – but the national Chinese government will have to step up to address the challenges. China's policy on atmospheric pollution is changeable in recent years. The single‐year estimated population exposure to air pollution is widely used in China where has the largest population and the heaviest fine particulate (PM2.5) pollution worldwide. However, the single‐year estimate introduces considerable uncertainty and loses consideration on multiyear cumulative exposure, thus may underestimate the burden of disease and mislead decisions regarding environmental conservation. We thus estimate the cumulative population exposure to PM2.5 pollution from 2000 to 2015. Areas with PM2.5 > 35 μg/m3 within China's territory increased from an average of 39% (2000–2005) to 42% (2006–2015), causing 471.6 million population at 58.8 × 104 km2 were exposed to 16 years' cumulative exposure to PM2.5 > 35 μg/m3. The migrant population contributed a major proportion of the increased population exposure, especially in East China's rapidly urbanizing areas. Cumulative population exposure to air pollution would provide a better understanding on the long‐term health risk and may suggest to a long, stable, and effective environmental protection regulation and policy should be carried out in China.
