Background: Insomnia is a common prevalent sleep disorder. Difficulty maintaining sleep or poor in quality in insomnia caused by disrupted or misaligned circadian rhythms may play an important role in the development of atherosclerosis. This study aimed to examine the association between insomnia and subclinical atherosclerosis in Chinese steelworkers.Methods: A total of 3240 subjects from a large enterprise located in northern China were included in this study. The Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS) was used to assess the status of insomnia. Subclinical atherosclerosis was evaluated using ultrasonographic measurements of carotid plaque. Multivariable logistic regression was used to identify association between insomnia and carotid atherosclerosis.Results: The overall prevalence of insomnia and carotid plaque were 35.3 and 31.7% in the study population. Compared with non-insomnia workers, significantly increased odds of carotid plaque were observed among insomnia workers after adjusting for potential confounders, odds ratio (OR) = 1.38, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.17 to 1.63. Exposure to current shift work and insomnia simultaneously can significantly elevated the odds of carotid plaque.Conclusion: Insomnia is associated with elevated odds of carotid atherosclerosis in male steelworkers. We aimed to identify different trajectories of remnant cholesterol (RC) and investigate the association of RC trajectories with vascular endothelial function and atherosclerosis progression in a longitudinal cohort of the Chinese population. A total of 521 participants were included in the flow-mediated vasodilation (FMD) subcohort study, and 7775 participants were included in the brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) subcohort study. All participants had ≥ 3 medical examinations during the 10-year follow-up period. In the FMD subcohort study, three distinct RC trajectories were identified according to the RC range and changing pattern over time: "low" (57.58%), "moderate" (30.90%) and "high" (11.52%). The proportion of the three groups with vascular endothelial dysfunction (FMD < 7.0%) was 20.00%, 39.75% and 60.00% respectively. Taking the low group as a reference, participants in the moderate and high groups had over 1.88 and 2.94 times the odds of vascular endothelial dysfunction (P = 0.048). In the baPWV subcohort study, three distinct RC trajectories were also identified: "low" (54.29%), "moderate" (38.97%) and "high" (6.74%). The proportion of the three groups with atherosclerosis (baPWV > 1400 cm/s) was 38.79%, 51.26% and 59.01% respectively. Taking the low group as a reference, participants in the moderate and high groups had over 1.46 and 2.16 times the odds of atherosclerosis (P < 0.001). The findings indicated that distinct RC trajectories are significantly associated with vascular endothelial function and atherosclerosis. Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) has emerged as a global public health concern. Identifying and preventing subclinical atherosclerosis (SCAS), an early indicator of CVD, is critical for improving cardiovascular outcomes. This study aimed to construct interpretable machine learning models for predicting SCAS risk in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients., Methods: This study included 3084 T2DM individuals who received health care at Zhenhai Lianhua Hospital, Ningbo, China, from January 2018 to December 2022. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator combined with random forest-recursive feature elimination were used to screen for characteristic variables. Linear discriminant analysis, logistic regression, Naive Bayes, random forest, support vector machine, and extreme gradient boosting were employed in constructing risk prediction models for SCAS in T2DM patients. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) was employed to assess the predictive capacity of the model through 10-fold cross-validation. Additionally, the SHapley Additive exPlanations were utilized to interpret the best-performing model., Results: The percentage of SCAS was 38.46% (n=1186) in the study population. Fourteen variables, including age, white blood cell count, and basophil count, were identified as independent risk factors for SCAS. Nine predictors, including age, albumin, and total protein, were screened for the construction of risk prediction models. After validation, the random forest model exhibited the best clinical predictive value in the training set with an AUC of 0.729 (95% CI: 0.709-0.749), and it also demonstrated good predictive value in the internal validation set [AUC: 0.715 (95% CI: 0.688-0.742)]. Background: Ideal cardiovascular health (CVH) is related to a low cardiovascular disease risk profile. This study aimed to investigate CVH metrics with both the biomarkers and markers of subclinical impairments of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) in subjects from central south China.Methods: The ideal CVH score (non-smoking status; ideal body mass index; regular physical activity; healthy diet; and an optimal serum cholesterol, blood pressure, and glucose profile; 1 point for each; total score: 0-7) was collected from 3009 participants without a history of CVDs. Subclinical biomarkers were assessed using C-reactive protein, homocysteine, and microalbuminuria. The presence of subclinical disease markers was defined as having at least one of the following: increased carotid intima-media thickness, carotid plaque, left ventricular hypertrophy, left ventricular systolic dysfunction, or a reduced ankle-brachial index. The association of biomarkers and markers with the CVH score was evaluated using multivariate logistic regression and linear regression analyses.Results: Only 0.2% of the study participants met all 7 ideal CVH metrics (CVH score = 7). Compared to the female participants, the male participants had poorer CVH profiles and a higher incidence of subclinical lesions (P < 0.05). In the fully adjusted models, per 1-unit increase in the CVH score was inversely associated with the biomarker levels (β = -0.092 - -0.224, P < 0.05 for all) and the odds of the presence of markers (odds ratio, 0.808; 95% confidence interval, 0.755-0.865). Similar relationships were observed in the gender subgroups and were stronger in the females.Conclusion: A clear inverse association was observed between the biomarkers or markers of subclinical impairments and the CVH score in a central south Chinese population, implying the importance of ideal CVH for the primordial prevention of CVDs. Background: Prediabetes is an important risk factor of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and is associated with subclinical atherosclerosis. However, the evidence of prediabetes as a cardiovascular risk factor is mainly derived from middle-aged adults. Recently, multiple studies supported that prediabetes in older adults would not lead to higher risk of CVD or mortality. We aimed to investigate the age-specific difference in the association between prediabetes and subclinical atherosclerosis in a Chinese prospective cohort study., Methods: We included 4739 individuals aged ≥ 40 years and without diagnosed diabetes or CVD history, and divided them into middle-aged adults (age < 60) and older adults (age ≥ 60). Fasting plasma glucose (FPG), 2-h post-load plasma glucose (2 h-PPG) and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) were measured at baseline to identify prediabetes status. At follow-up visits, subclinical atherosclerosis status was assessed by branchial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) and carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT). Logistic regression analysis, restricted cubic splines and cross-lagged path analysis were used in statistical analysis., Results: 1634 participants aged over 60 years, and 64.3% of them had prediabetes. 3105 participants aged 40-59 years, and 49.3% of them had prediabetes. We found that prediabetes was associated with increased risk of subclinical atherosclerosis in middle-aged adults, but the association attenuated substantially in older adults. Impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), compared to normal glucose tolerance, was associated with 39% lower risk of increased baPWV only in older adults. In accordance, the association between 2 h-PPG and risk of increased baPWV was "U-shaped" in older adults, while risk of elevated baPWV increased linearly with 2 h-PPG in middle-aged adults. In the cross-lagged analysis, increase in FPG and 2 h-PPG tended not to precede increase in baPWV in older adults, but appeared to increase simultaneously with baPWV in middle-aged ones., Conclusion: Our results indicated that prediabetes might be less related to subclinical atherosclerosis in older adults than in middle-aged adults and suggested that age was important to consider in the care of adults with prediabetes., (© 2022. Aims The presence of subclinical stenosed coronary segments and plaque subtypes has not been compared among those with metabolic syndrome, diabetes, or neither condition in middle-aged individuals. In select, intermediate-risk subjects, it may be reasonable to directly measure atherosclerosis burden by low-dose, multidetector-row computed tomographic coronary angiography. Methods We performed a cross-sectional analysis of 1024 consecutive, newly self-referred subjects (692 men, 332 women; mean age 53.0 ± 9.7 years) who underwent health evaluation at the China Medical University Hospital. Participants had at least one cardiac risk factor, but no known coronary heart disease. Results Among our 1024 subjects, 135 had diabetes, 334 had metabolic syndrome and 555 had neither condition. The subjects with diabetes and those with metabolic syndrome had a higher prevalence of non-calcified, calcified and mixed-type plaques and stenosed coronary segments than the subjects with neither condition (P < 0.05). The odds ratios for diabetes and the presence of any plaque, mixed plaque, calcified plaque and stenosed segment compared with neither metabolic syndrome nor diabetes were 2.893, 3.629, 2.099 and 2.036, respectively, all of which were significant (P < 0.05). The odds ratio for metabolic syndrome and the presence of any plaque compared with neither metabolic syndrome nor diabetes was 1.606 (95% CI 1.063-2.426; P < 0.05). Conclusion In middle-aged subjects, diabetes was related to an increased risk of the presence of mixed plaques, calcified plaques and stenosed coronary segments. Abstract: Background: Substantial evidence shows that psychological factors are associated with cardiovascular diseases. However, data on the association between psychological factors and subclinical atherosclerosis is lacking in postmenopausal Chinese women. Objectives: To examine the associations of perceived stress and trait anxiety with subclinical atherosclerosis in postmenopausal Chinese women in Hong Kong. Their relationships with biological and behavioral risk factors were also examined. Methods: Between 2002 and 2004, we recruited 518 postmenopausal women aged 50–64 years. Perceived stress and trait anxiety were evaluated by the perceived stress scale and the state-trait anxiety inventory, respectively. Subclinical atherosclerosis was determined by measuring carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) and plaque using B-mode ultrasonography. Results: Perceived stress and trait anxiety showed no significant association with IMT or plaque. Multivariate analyses showed high perceived stress scores were associated with an increased risk of elevated total cholesterol (OR=2.10; 95% CI=1.17–3.77) and elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (OR=2.39; 95% CI=1.36–4.21). High trait anxiety scores were associated with a 2.7-fold risk of elevated LDL-C (OR=2.74; 95% CI=1.56–4.80). Women with high perceived stress or trait anxiety scores were more likely to be physically inactive. Conclusions: Perceived stress and trait anxiety were associated with atherogenic lipid levels, but not subclinical atherosclerosis. Background: Diabetes mellitus, especially type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), is regarded as highly heterogeneous. Novel diabetes phenotypes by cluster analysis have been proposed in Europeans but may show different cluster features in Asians. The applicability of cluster analysis in middle-aged and elderly Chinese community T2DM patients needs further investigation., Methods: Participants were recruited from Jiading community in Shanghai, China. We adopted k-means cluster analysis in 1130 patients (aged ≥ 40 years) with newly-diagnosed T2DM at baseline. Cluster analysis was performed based on seven variables, including fasting plasma glucose, 2 hours postprandial blood glucose, age at diagnosis, body mass index, hemoglobin A1c, homoeostatic model assessment estimates of β-cell function and insulin resistance. All subjects were re-examined at 4.4 years later. Metabolic associated fatty liver disease was diagnosed using B-ultrasound, hepatic fibrosis by non-invasive scores, renal and cardiovascular status by subclinical biomarkers. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to compare the risks of complications between clusters., Results: Patients were classified into 4 clusters. 381 (33.7%), 456 (40.4%), 87 (7.7%), and 206 (18.2%) patients were separately assigned to mild age-related diabetes (MARD), mild obesity-related diabetes (MOD), severe insulin-deficient and insulin-resistant diabetes (SIDRD), or severe obesity-related and insulin-resistant diabetes (SOIRD), respectively. Participants in MARD, SOIRD, and SIDRD clusters were associated with significantly increased risks of different complications. SOIRD and SIDRD showed novel features in Chinese T2DM patients that were different from those in Europeans., Conclusions: The refined diabetes phenotypic approach was applicable to Chinese middle-aged and elderly T2DM patients. Objective: The aim of the study was to investigate the association between the visit-to-visit variability (VVV) of fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and arterial stiffness in Chinese adults., Methods: We performed a cohort study involving 2002 Chinese adults with no history of myocardial infarction or stroke. All the participants attended three visits (the baseline visit in 2008, the 2 nd visit in 2009 and the 3 rd visit in 2013). We used four measures to define the VVV of FPG across the three visits: the standard deviation (SD), the coefficient of variation (CV), the average successive variability (ASV) and the variability independent of the mean (VIM). We used brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (ba-PWV) to measure arterial stiffness at the 2 nd and the 3 rd visits., Results: Compared with the lowest tertile of all the four measurements of VVV of FPG, significantly increased levels of ba-PWV change, ratio of ba-PWV change and the occurrence of the elevated ba-PWV were found in the highest tertile. The odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) comparing participants in the highest tertile vs . the lowest tertile of FPG-SD was 1.37 (1.01-1.86) for risks of having elevated ba-PWV, even after adjustment for covariates including the mean FPG. Background: The beneficial effect of statins on atherosclerosis and cardiovascular outcomes has been well established. The Measuring Effects on intima media Thickness: an Evaluation Of Rosuvastatin (METEOR) global study demonstrated that a 2-year orally administered treatment with rosuvastatin 40 mg daily significantly slowed the progression of carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) compared to placebo. The current METEOR-China study is designed to evaluate the effect of rosuvastatin 20 mg daily versus placebo on the progression of atherosclerosis measured by CIMT in asymptomatic Chinese subjects.Methods: This is a phase 3, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicentre parallel-group study. Asymptomatic Chinese subjects with a 10-year ischaemic cardiovascular disease (ICVD) risk < 10% will be recruited at 25 study sites. They will be treated with rosuvastatin 20 mg or placebo for 104 weeks. The primary endpoint is the annualised rate of change in CIMT measured by B-mode ultrasonography. Secondary endpoints include the annualised rate of change in CIMT at three different sections of the carotid artery and changes in the serum lipid profile. Safety parameters will also be assessed.Conclusion: The study will evaluate whether rosuvastatin 20 mg slows the progression of CIMT in asymptomatic Chinese subjects at low risk of ICVD.Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov NCT02546323 . Aims: Recently, neck circumference (NC) has been proposed as a new anthropometric index for assessing upper body fat, which has a close relationship with cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and their risk factors. The purpose of this study was to explore the role of NC in identifying subclinical atherosclerosis, an early stage of CVD, in a Shanghai community population., Materials and Methods: We enrolled 1387 subjects (486 men and 901 women) from the Shanghai community. Anthropometric measurements, including NC and waist circumference (WC), were taken for all subjects. Carotid intima media thickness (C-IMT) was determined by carotid ultrasonography. Elevated NC was defined as NC ≥ 38.5 cm in men and NC ≥ 34.5 cm in women., Results: There was a positive correlation between NC and C-IMT, and this association remained significant even after adjustment for BMI (P = .015; P = .038). After adjusting for confounding factors, the additional risks of elevated C-IMT were 58% and 33% for each SD increase in NC in men and women, respectively (P = .003; P = .009). The NC cutoffs could identify 53.38% of men and 43.07% of women with elevated C-IMT, which was comparable to the identification of 56.08% of men and 42.57% of women with elevated C-IMT using WC cutoffs (P = .218; P = .920)., Conclusions: NC was significantly and positively correlated with C-IMT. Background: Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) has been proposed and diagnosed based on modified criteria. However, evidence for the risks of developing subclinical atherosclerosis with MAFLD transitions according to its new definition has never been reported., Methods: Using data from a community-based cohort, 6232 participants aged 40 years or older were included and were followed up for a median of 4.3 years during 2010-2015. Participants were categorized into four groups (stable non-MAFLD, MAFLD regressed to non-MAFLD, non-MAFLD progressed to MAFLD, and stable MAFLD). Subclinical atherosclerosis was defined as elevated carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT), elevated brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (ba-PWV), or microalbuminuria., Results: Compared with the stable non-MAFLD category, participants who progressed to MAFLD at follow-up visit had a 1.356-fold increased risk of developing elevated CIMT [odds ratio (OR) = 1.356; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.134-1.620], and a 1.458-fold increased risk of incident microalbuminuria (OR = 1.458; 95% CI = 1.034-2.056) after adjustment for confounders, respectively. In addition, participants with stable MAFLD showed 17.6%, 32.4%, and 35.4% increased risks of developing elevated CIMT, elevated ba-PWV and microalbuminuria, respectively. Compared with the stable MAFLD category, participants with MAFLD and low probability of fibrosis at baseline who regressed to non-MAFLD at follow-up visit had a 29.4% decreased risk of developing elevated CIMT (OR = 0.706; 95% CI = 0.507-0.984), a 43.1% decreased risk of developing elevated ba-PWV (OR = 0.569; 95% CI = 0.340-0.950), but was not significantly associated with incident microalbuminuria (OR = 0.709; 95% CI = 0.386-1.301). The decreased risks attributed to MAFLD regression were more evident in participants without diabetes or dyslipidemia, as well as in those with 0-1 metabolic risk abnormalities, respectively., Conclusions: MAFLD was significantly associated with higher risks of developing subclinical atherosclerosis. Moreover, the regression of MAFLD might modify the risks of developing subclinical atherosclerosis, especially among those with low probability of fibrosis or less metabolic risk abnormalities. Background: Prediabetes is associated with a high risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and often occurs with dyslipidaemia. The present study investigated the association between subclinical atherosclerosis profiles and prediabetes with and without dyslipidaemia., Methods: This cross-sectional analysis included 4786 participants (1441 subjects with prediabetes and 3345 healthy controls). Prediabetes was defined by fasting plasma glucose (FPG) 5.6-6.9mmol/L or HbA1c 5.7-6.4% without antidiabetic drugs. Different markers of subclinical atherosclerosis were analysed: the carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT), carotid plaques (CP), and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV)., Results: Subclinical atherosclerosis was significantly more prevalent in prediabetic subjects than in normoglycaemic subjects (P<0.001). Only individuals with prediabetes in the dyslipidaemic group had significantly elevated adjusted odds ratios for subclinical atherosclerosis profiles. When stratified by FPG-only, HbA1c-only or both, the three subcategories in combination with dyslipidaemia shared a similarly increased risk of subclinical atherosclerosis compared to normoglycaemia without dyslipidaemia (P<0.05). The risk profile increased directionally from FPG-only to HbA1c-only to both overall., Conclusion: Our data suggest that subclinical atherosclerotic changes in the prediabetic state are mainly seen in dyslipidaemic subjects. Background: Heat shock protein 27 (HSP27) has been proposed as a vital protective factor in atherosclerosis. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the association between circulating HSP27 and carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) in individuals with type 2 diabetes and to determine whether HSP27 represents an independent marker of subclinical atherosclerosis in this patient population., Methods: We performed a cross-sectional community-based study in 186 Chinese subjects with a median duration of type 2 diabetes of 8.2 years who underwent ultrasound carotid IMT measurement. Serum HSP27 levels were assessed by ELISA., Results: Serum HSP27 levels were significantly higher in the IMT (+, > 1.0 mm) group than in the IMT (-, ≤1.0 mm) group, with the median values of 8.80 ng/mL (5.62-12.25) and 6.93 ng/mL (4.23-9.60), respectively (P = 0.006). The discriminative value of HSP27 to evaluate IMT was 7.16 ng/mL and the area under the curve was 0.72 (95%CI = 0.64-0.80, P = 0.0065). Spearman's rank correlation analysis demonstrated that the concentrations of circulating HSP27 were positively associated with carotid IMT (r = 0.198, P = 0.007) and blood urea nitrogen (r = 0.170, P < 0.05). Furthermore, in the logistic model, serum HSP27 levels were found to be independent predictors for carotid IMT in type 2 diabetic patients after adjustment for onset age of diabetes, blood pressure, total cholesterol and C-reactive protein (OR = 1.085, P = 0.022)., Conclusions: Circulating HSP27, positively correlates with carotid IMT, is an independent predictor for early atherosclerotic changes in diabetes, and may represent a novel marker of subclinical atherosclerosis in type 2 diabetes.

Background: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a risk factor for carotid plaque in the general population; however, whether NAFLD is associated with carotid plaque in aged population remains unknown. This cross-sectional study was conducted to evaluate the association between NAFLD and carotid plaque in a Chinese aged population., Methods: A total number of 12,990 Chinese aged adults (7,685 men and 5,305 women) were included. NAFLD was diagnosed based on the recommendation of Asia-Pacific Working Party on NAFLD and Chinese Association for the Study of Liver Disease and excessive alcohol consumption (weekly alcohol consumption ≤210 g in men and ≤140 g in women) was excluded. Carotid plaque was confirmed by ultrasonography. Potential confounders and biochemical findings were collected at baseline. Logistic regression model was employed to evaluate the association between NAFLD and carotid plaque., Results: The prevalence of carotid plaque was significantly higher in aged participants with NAFLD than in those without NAFLD (22.4% vs. 16.3%, P<0.001). NAFLD is associated with carotid plaque [odd ratio (OR) =1.89, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.59-2.24], after adjusting for age, gender, BMI, liver and kidney function, glucose level, lipid profiles, and white blood cell (WBC) count. The association between NAFLD and carotid plaque was attenuated when participants with elevated ALT (≥75 IU/L), a history of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and obesity were censored although the significant association remained., Conclusions: NAFLD is associated with carotid plaque in Chinese aged population.

Objectives: Upper body fat has been associated with an unfavourable cardiometabolic risk. We aimed to investigate the associations between mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC), a novel indicator of upper body fat, and a wide spectrum of cardiometabolic risk profiles in Chinese population., Design and Setting: Cross-sectional analyses were performed using data from a well-defined community in 2014, Shanghai, China., Participants: A total of 6287 Chinese adults (2310 men and 3977 women) aged 40 years or older., Outcome Measures: Multivariable logistic regression model was used to examine the associations of MUAC with cardiometabolic disorders including central obesity, diabetes, hypertension, hypertriglyceridaemia, low high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and subclinical atherosclerosis., Results: In the overall participants, after multivariable adjustment, each 1 SD (3.13 cm) increment in MUAC was positively associated with central obesity (OR 2.05; 95% CI 1.85 to 2.28), hypertension (OR 1.10; 95% CI 1.03 to 1.19) and low HDL cholesterol (OR 1.10; 95% CI 1.01 to 1.22). Multivariable-adjusted ORs for subclinical atherosclerosis were gradually increased across increasing quartiles of MUAC with the lowest quartile as reference (quartile 2: OR 1.31; 95% CI 1.09 to 1.58; quartile 3: OR 1.33; 95% CI 1.10 to 1.62; quartile 4: OR 1.45; 95% CI 1.16 to 1.80; p for trend=0.005). Similar but more prominent associations were observed among women than men. Objective: Ideal cardiovascular health (CVH) could predict a lower risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. This study was conducted to investigate the association between ideal CVH and subclinical atherosclerosis in a population cohort of Chinese adults aged ⪖ 40 years., Methods: This study was designed as a cross-sectional analysis of 8,395 participants who had complete data at baseline and a prospective analysis of 4,879 participants who had complete data at 4.3 years of follow-up. Ideal CVH metrics were defined according to the American Heart Association. Subclinical atherosclerosis was evaluated by plaques in carotid arteries, carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT), brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV), and urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR)., Results: Both the prevalence and incidence of atherosclerosis measures were found to be decreased with increasing numbers of ideal CVH metrics at baseline (all P values for trend < 0.01). The levels of CIMT and UACR at follow-up showed an inverse and significant association with the numbers of ideal CVH metrics at baseline (both P values for trend < 0.05) but a borderline significant association with baPWV (P for trend = 0.0505). Taking participants with 0-1 ideal metric as reference, we found that participants with 5-6 ideal metrics had significantly lower risks of developing carotid plaques (odds ratio, OR = 0.46; 95% confidence interval, CI 0.27-0.79), increased CIMT (OR = 0.60; 95% CI 0.42-0.84), and increased baPWV (OR = 0.57; 95% CI 0.34-0.97) after full adjustments. A significant interactive effect of age and CVH was detected on CIMT and baPWV progression (both P values for interaction < 0.05)., Conclusion: The numbers of ideal CVH metrics showed a significant and inverse association with the risk of developing subclinical atherosclerosis in middle-aged and elderly Chinese adults, whereas its dose-response effect was attenuated in individuals aged ≥ 60 years and partially weakened in male participants., (Copyright © 2019 The Editorial Board of Biomedical and Environmental Sciences. Background: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) refers to fatty infiltration of liver in the absence of excessive alcohol abuse. However, the problem that whether NAFLD is correlated with subclinical atherosclerosis assessed by carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (ba-PWV) remains a source of controversy. This can be attributed to the differences in diagnosis methods, population ethnicity, sampling size and bias. This study aimed to further investigate the association of NAFLD with subclinical atherosclerosis., Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out in the current study on population aged over 40 years derived from Kailuan community-based prospective study among Chinese adults from June 2010 to June 2011. NAFLD was evaluated through ultrasonography and histories of alcohol consumption. Clinical parameters and medical histories of patients were collected in the manner of interview performed by trained investigators using the standardized questionnaires. The biochemical parameters were analyzed at the central laboratory. CIMT and ba-PWV of each patient were measured. Multivariate logistic regression was used to analyze the associations of NAFLD with subclinical atherosclerosis assessed by CIMT or ba-PWV., Results: A total of 4112 participants aged over 40 years were enrolled from Kailuan cohort, including 2229 men and 1883 women. The overall prevalence of NAFLD was 38.2% in the total population. Statistically significant differences were found in CIMT (P < 0.0001) and ba-PWV (P = 0.0007) according to the presence of NAFLD. It is notably that the multivariate logistic regression revealed NAFLD was independently associated with elevated CIMT after adjusting the conventional cardiovascular and metabolic risk factors (OR = 1.663, 95% CI = 1.391-1.989, P < 0.0001). In addition, NAFLD was also found to be positively associated with elevated ba-PWV after adjusting age, gender, BMI, current smoking and regular exercising (OR = 1.319, 95% CI = 1.072-1.624, P = 0.0089)., Conclusions: Our findings suggest that NAFLD is remarkably correlated with subclinical atherosclerosis, which should be strongly advised to engage in the preventive strategies for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs).

Objectives: Loss of bone mass may affect the progression of atherosclerosis. We investigated the relationship between low bone mineral density (BMD) and subclinical atherosclerosis in rural China., Methods: In total, 333 men and 421 postmenopausal women aged 55-65 years were enrolled. BMD was measured in the lumbar spine, femoral neck, and total hip using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Subclinical atherosclerosis was defined as increased carotid artery intima-media thickness (CIMT ≥0.9 mm), the presence of carotid plaques, high brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV ≥1,400 cm/s), and low ankle-brachial index (ABI ≤1). Binary logistic regression analyses were used to estimate the association between low BMD and subclinical atherosclerosis., Results: There was no significant difference in BMD between the normal group and the subclinical atherosclerosis group. After full adjustment for the relevant covariates, a boundary significant association was found between low BMD in the femoral neck and baPWV in postmenopausal women (odds ratio = 1.77, p = 0.049). After full adjustment, neither BMD nor low BMD were significantly associated with subclinical atherosclerosis in men or postmenopausal women., Conclusions: Low BMD is not associated with subclinical atherosclerosis in Chinese individuals aged 55-65 years resident in rural China., (© 2018 S.
