To gain a heuristic understanding of the temporal dimension of privacy, we propose the concept of retrospective privacy concerns and explore its antecedents, through the lens of contextual integrity framework. We collected 276 respondents and then conducted partial least squares to test our hypotheses. The results show life change experiences and information relevance impact retrospective impression management concerns, which, in turn, exert an effect on retrospective privacy concerns. Information dissemination regarding sharing information to only selected friends perceived higher level of control than sharing information to all friends, while perceived control could enhance retrospective privacy concerns. Also, users who feel under surveillance would be concerned about their retrospective privacy. Moreover, we verify the effect of time on retrospective privacy concerns and information relevance. Previous studies on excessive use of social networking services (SNSs) have relied on behavioral addiction theory to explain how users react when they face stress from overusing SNSs. Scholars have typically thought that users would stop using an SNS when they became addicted to the SNS and experienced stress from it. However, there seems to be a research gap between the initial adoption and the final intrusion stage of SNS usage. To fill that gap, our study uses a stimulus–organism–response paradigm to examine users' balancing mechanism for social network overuse. Based on a survey of users of social networking services in China, we found that (1) social interaction overload, invasion of work, and invasion of privacy had significant positive impact on technostress; (2) perceived usefulness of SNSs, perceived enjoyment of SNSs, and technostress had significant positive impact on rational usage; (3) social interaction overload had a negative impact on perceived performance, and invasion of privacy had a negative impact on performance and happiness. A better understanding of users' continuance intention towards social networking services (SNSs) gives SNS providers greater insight to reducing turnover rate of their users. Drawing on social influence theory, this study develops a theoretical model to investigate users' continuance intention towards SNSs within the context of China. Specifically, this model examines how sociability and social overload mediate the impact of subjective norms, peer effects and social identity on continuance intention. Data of 286 Chinese university students were collected through an online questionnaire and analyzed by the partial least square method. Results reveal that although subjective norms have an insignificant impact on continuance intention, both peer effects and social identity positively impact continuance intention, and their impacts are partially mediated by sociability and social overload. The findings highlight the importance of peer effects and social identity, the positive role of sociability and the negative role of social overload in determining continuance intention. In this exploratory study, the researchers examined the use of microblogs and social networking services by academic libraries in the United States and China with data collected from library Web sites, social media accounts, and search engines. The top 100 universities from each country were included in the study, and the use of these two types of social media by the main libraries of the universities was examined over a period of about four months. The findings indicate that the adoption rates of these social media were higher among the U.S. libraries as measured by the number of libraries that had an account in each type of social media studied. However, the number of accounts for the Chinese libraries was increasing faster during the study period. In the area of microblogs, where the data from the two countries were more comparable and in-depth analysis was feasible, the U.S. libraries were found to have started using the social media earlier, but the Chinese libraries attracted more users measured by either the absolute or the relative number of followers of the libraries' microblog accounts. Social networking services (SNS) providers around the world, and those localized SNS in particular, face imminent challenges of maintaining user base, sustaining active usage, and achieving long-term viability. In order to understand users' continuance intention of using SNS, a conceptual model is proposed, which is adapted from the expectation-confirmation theory of IS continuance and integrates SNS-relevant constructs. The model is tested by a survey dataset collected from the users of a major Chinese SNS website. Findings show that the users ' continuance intention is directly motivated by 1) users' satisfaction with their usage, 2) usefulness of the SNS perceived by users after their usage, and 3) users ' structural embeddedness in the SNS site. Also found are the indirect effects of users' confirmation of initial expectation of the SNS and perceived enjoyment on continuance intention. This is one of the first studies that extend the expectation-confirmation theory into the context of SNS. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore empirically the adoption of social networking services in corporate communication within the context of China. Design/methodology/approach – After reviewing the extant literature on technology adoption, the paper proposes a conceptual model for studying the adoption of social networking in corporate communication. Based on this model a quantitative survey is carried out within the Chinese context to examine the key factors influencing consumers' adoption of social networking services to engage with organisations. Findings – The conceptual model proposed in this study offers a comprehensive overview of the adoption of social networking services through identifying various factors associated with ease of use, perceived usefulness, trust and loyalty and advertisement. Through adopting an empirical research strategy focusing on China, which has a high level of technology adoption, this study contributes towards providing a good understanding of how new technology-enabled social media platforms can offer a more dynamic engagement between consumers and organisations. Research limitations/implications – This research only focuses on exploring empirically the adoption of social networking services in one country and does not investigate how such factors may impact consumers' adoption and continuity to use in that country or in a wider context. Practical implications – The conceptual model in this study offers organisations including multinational ones and researchers a comprehensive overview of the adoption of social networking services in corporate communication, particularly in an emerging economy. The key findings of this study show how the ease of use of these platforms and services can facilitate a better engagement and communication between consumers and corporate organisations. In addition, the study indicates embedding social networking services platforms and services within the advertisement strategy for the organisation can contribute towards its success in reaching to a broader consumer range. Originality/value – The core contribution of this research adds to the growing body of knowledge concerning the adoption of social networking services in emerging economies. In particular, the conceptual model formulated through the synthesis of extant literature offers researchers and practitioners valuable insights on appreciating the key issues that require consideration when organisations utilise social networking services to engage with consumers.
