Introduction: At present, the incidence of adolescent depression is increasing each year, having a wide and profound impact on adolescents. This study investigated the mood state of mid-to-late adolescents and young adults and analyzed related factors; clarified the incidence of depression, suicide, and self-injurious thoughts/behaviors in this population; and conducted relevant analysis of related factors of depression and anxiety. Methods: Study subjects were students aged 14-25 years, from three high schools and one university in Liaoning Province. Study subjects were evaluated using several questionnaires that combined online and offline methods. Specifically, the Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS), Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire (SCSQ), Child Depression Inventory (CDI), the Chinese version of the Spence Child Anxiety Scale (SCAS), and a general questionnaire were utilized. Single-factor ANOVA, t-test, Chi-square, and multiple regression analysis were used to analyze the data. Results: The results showed that, among the 14-17-year-old subjects, the incidence of depression was 336 (14.7%), the incidence of anxiety was 763 (33.5%). Among the 18-25-year-old subjects, the incidence of depression was 34 (8.6%), the incidence of anxiety was 7 (1.8%). In the general questionnaire, 2081 (77.8%) individuals were depressed, 689 (25.8%) had thoughts of self-injury, and 323 (12.1%) had self-injurious behaviors. Among the 14-17-year-old subjects, 1789 (78.46%) were depressed, 689 (30.22%) had self-injury thoughts, and 319 (1.71%) had self-injurious behaviors. Among the 18-25-year-old subjects, 292 (73.92%) were depressed, but 4 (1.01%) had self-injurious behaviors. The incidence of depression and anxiety in adolescents is high, presenting with a certain risk of self-injury. However, age is an important factor in the occurrence of depression and anxiety; among the 18-25-year-old subjects, the incidence of depression (8.6% vs. 4.7%) and anxiety (1.8% vs. 33.5%) was lower than that among the 14-17-year-old population. Through comparative analysis, adolescents aged 14-17 remained at high risk of depression and anxiety. Discussion: In the analysis of risk factors for depression and anxiety, relationships with classmates, teachers, and parents were reported as important influencing factors of emotional state. Although aggression associated self-injury and suicidal ideation, but the specific impact of different subtypes of aggression is unclear. Therefore, the current study aims to quantify the associations between five subtypes of aggression, self-injury, and suicidal ideation in Chinese adolescents. A total of 18,532 students were recruited in grades 7 to 12 using a stratified cluster sampling across five representative provinces in China. The Functional Assessment of Self-Mutilation (CH-FASM) and Buss and Warren's Aggression Questionnaire (BWAQ) assess self-injury and aggression, respectively. During the last year, the proportion of self-injury, suicidal ideation, and self-injury plus suicidal ideation (SSI) were 13.4 %, 10.0 %, 12.4 %, respectively. Multivariate logistic regression indicated that hostility was associated with self-injury-only (OR = 1.033, 95 % CI = 1.021–1.044), suicidal ideation-only (OR = 1.075, 95 % CI = 1.061–1.088), and SSI (OR = 1.100, 95 % CI = 1.087–1.114) (all P < 0.001) across five subtypes of aggression. In gender stratification, physical aggression was risk factor for self-injury-only, suicidal ideation-only, and SSI (OR = 1.028, 95 % CI = 1.018–1.037, P < 0.001) in females. While anger was association with self-injury-only and suicidal ideation-only in males (P < 0.05). This study was a cross-sectional design and self-reported questionnaire. Hostility is a strong predictor of self-injury and suicidal ideation across five subtypes of aggression. There are gender differences in relationships. Objectives: Distress rumination is a cause of suicidality and self-injurious behavior (SSIB) among individuals. Although previous studies have shown that distress rumination, SSIB, resilience, and depression are significantly related, the interaction mechanism remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate resilience and depression as mediators of the relationship between distress rumination and SSIB among Chinese college athletes infected with COVID-19. Methods: Convenience sampling was used to recruit participants from the National College Football Championship in Guangxi City, China from January to February 2023. Participants completed the Ruminative Responses Scale (RRS), a subscale of the Health-Risk Behavior Inventory (HBI), the Mental Toughness Index (MTI) and the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). We used the PROCESS macro for SPSS to determine the mediating effect of resilience and depression between distress rumination and SSIB. Results: A total of 350 Chinese college athletes participated in this study and completed the questionnaire survey. 289 (81.7% boys; Mage = 20.31 years, SD = 1.60) of them have been infected with COVID-19. 59.9% (n = 173) participants were from urban areas and 15.6% (n = 45) of participants have engaged in selfinjurious behaviors or suicidal ideation. College athletes' distress rumination was significantly negatively correlated with resilience (r = - 0.28, p < 0.01), and was significantly positively correlated with depression (r = 0.49, p < 0.01) and SSIB (r = - 0.18, p < 0.01). Resilience was significantly negatively correlated with depression (r = - 0.35, p < 0.01) and SSIB (r = - 0.30, p < 0.01). Finally, depression was significantly positively correlated with SSIB (r = - 0.38, p < 0.01). Resilience and depression played a mediating role of the total effects of distress rumination and SSIB, respectively. Meanwhile, the chain mediating effect of resilience and depression was also significant. Conclusion: This study found that distress rumination can directly predict SSIB, and indirectly predict SSIB through the mediating effect of resilience and depression, and the chain mediating effect of resilience-depression. Therefore, reducing the degree of distress rumination of college athletes infected by COVID-19 and improving their resilience, as well as reducing their depression may help prevent SSIB. Problematic internet use (PIU) has been shown to be closely associated with suicidality and self-injurious behavior (SSIB), but the mechanism to help explain this association is understudied. The aim of the present study is to test mediating effects of negative affectivity between PIU and SSIB and whether social support moderates this mediating effect. A sample of 2173 middle and high school students (M age = 14.66, SD age = 1.87) in central China were recruited. All participants completed a self-report questionnaire assessing PIU, SSIB, negative affectivity, and social support. Simple mediation analysis and moderated mediation analysis were conducted to examine the roles of negative affectivity and social support in the association between PIU and SSIB. PIU was positively associated with SSIB, and negative affectivity mediated this association (β = 0.255, Boot 95 % CI: 0.219 to 0.296). The indirect effect of negative affectivity was moderated by social support, with a stronger association between PIU and SSIB for adolescents with lower social support (β = 0.228, Boot 95 % CI: 0.178 to 0.282) than their counterparts (β = 0.098, Boot 95 % CI: 0.068 to 0.133). PIU is a detrimental risk factor for SSIB, as it is associated with high negative affectivity and increased SSIB, which was more robust for adolescents with lower social support. Background: The prevalence of self-injury and suicide is higher than the general population of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). However, the results reported in existing studies are highly variable in China. The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to synthesize the currently available high-quality evidence to explore the prevalence and influence factors of self-injury and suicide among PLWHA in China., Method: We retrieve literature written in Chinese and English through databases such as PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, SinoMed, CNKI, WanFang Database, and CQVIP from inception to 1 September 2022. Sata 16.0 software was used for analysis., Results: A total of 28 studies were included with a sample size of 1,433,971 and had a satisfactory quality score of ≥ 5. The prevalence among PLWHA in China were 30% for suicidal ideation (SI), 5% for suicide attempt (SA), 8% for suicide plan (SP), 7% for attempted suicide (AS), and 3‰ for completed suicide. High stigma (OR = 2.94, 95%CI: 1.90 - 4.57), depression (OR, 3.17; 95%CI, 2.20 - 4.57), anxiety (OR, 3.06; 95%CI, 2.23 - 4.20), low self-esteem (OR, 3.82, 95%CI, 2.22 - 6.57), high HIV related stress (OR, 2.53; 95%CI, 1.36 - 4.72), and unemployment (OR, 2.50; 95%CI, 1.51 - 4.15) are risk factors for SI; high social support (OR, 0.61; 95%CI, 0.44 - 0.84) and spouse infected with HIV (OR, 0.39; 95%CI, 0.21 - 0.74) are protective factors for SI; depression (OR, 1.62; 95%CI, 1.24 - 2.13), high aggression (OR, 4.66; 95%CI, 2.59 - 8.39), and more negative life events (OR, 2.51; 95%CI, 1.47 - 4.29) are risk factors for AS; high level of education (OR, 1.31; 95%CI, 1.21 - 1.43) is risk factor for CS., Conclusion: Figures indicate that approximately one-third of PLWHA had suicidal ideation, and three out of 1,000 completed suicide in China. Positive events are protective factors for self-injury and suicide among PLWHA, while negative events are risk factors. Direct self-injurious behavior (DSIB) has become an important focus due to its perniciousness and perplexity. Little is known about its prevalence and correlative factors in Chinese adolescents, including how data may differ according to gender. A multicenter, multistage stratified cluster random sampling was used to examine the previous 12-month prevalence of DSIB, as well as the possible correlates of demographics, risky behaviors, suicidality, and psychosocial factors associated with DSIB in a school-based sample of 11,880 students (49.5 % boys and 50.5 % girls). Approximately 30 % of the adolescents in the sample reported at least one incident of DSIB in the past 12-month period. After controlling for demographic variables, analyses of the independent relationships of DSIB with risky behaviors, suicidality, and psychosocial factors were conducted for each gender. Smoking, binge drinking, running away from home, suicide ideation, suicide plans, positive affect, and physical symptoms were identified as common factors associated with DSIB for both genders in the final model. In addition, truancy, fighting, physical inactivity, motor impulsiveness, and depressed affect were found to be related to DSIB in boys, whereas suicide attempts and somatic complaints were found to be related to DSIB in girls. Separation anxiety and social anxiety associated negatively with DSIB in boys and girls, respectively. DSIB was not found to independently relate to attention impulsiveness, non-planned impulsiveness, self-esteem, or harm avoidance in either genders. DSIB was prevalent in Chinese adolescents. Programs intended to promote physical and mental health in adolescents should take into account gender differences in DSIB-associated factors, including risky behaviors, suicidality, and psychosocial factors. Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is prevalent and is associated with increased risk of suicidal behavior in adolescents. This study examined which sleep variables are associated with NSSI, independently from demographics and mental health problems in Chinese adolescents. Participants consisted of 2090 students sampled from three high schools in Shandong, China and had a mean age of 15.49 years. Participants completed a sleep and health questionnaire to report their demographic and family information, sleep duration and sleep problems, impulsiveness, hopelessness, internalizing and externalizing problems, and NSSI. A series of regression analyses were conducted to examine the associations between sleep variables and NSSI. Of the sample, 12.6 % reported having ever engaged in NSSI and 8.8 % engaged during the last year. Univariate logistic analyses demonstrated that multiple sleep variables including short sleep duration, insomnia symptoms, poor sleep quality, sleep insufficiency, unrefreshed sleep, sleep dissatisfaction, daytime sleepiness, fatigue, snoring, and nightmares were associated with increased risk of NSSI. After adjusting for demographic and mental health variables, NSSI was significantly associated with sleeping <6 h per night, poor sleep quality, sleep dissatisfaction, daytime sleepiness, and frequent nightmares. Stepwise logistic regression model demonstrated that poor sleep quality (OR = 2.18, 95 % CI = 1.37-3.47) and frequent nightmares (OR = 2.88, 95 % CI = 1.45-5.70) were significantly independently associated with NSSI. In conclusion, while multiple sleep variables are associated with NSSI, poor sleep quality and frequent nightmares are independent risk factors of NSSI. Both insufficient sleep and self-injury are rising public health issues among middle school students. Understanding their relationship may guide the intervention and policy making to help youths gain a healthy life. Thus, we analysed the data collected from the Shanghai Students Health Risk Behavior Surveillance (2015) in the Huangpu District. Self-injury was self-reported and categorized into ever or never. Sleep duration was classified as sufficient and insufficient according to the Health China 2030 Plan and the National Sleep Foundation's updated sleep duration recommendations. Crude OR and adjusted OR of sleep duration and covariates were estimated for self-injury using the logistic regression models with standard error clustered on school types. Results showed that 8.42% of the participants had conducted self-injury, with girls more than boys and ordinary school students more than key school students. After full adjustment, sleep insufficiency increased the odds of conducting self-injury by approximately two folds (AOR = 2.08, 95%CI = 1.40-3.07). The odds of self-injury were higher among students studying at ordinary schools (AOR = 3.58, 95%CI = 1.25-10.27) or vocational schools (AOR = 2.00, 95%CI = 1.77-2.26), with comparison to those at key schools. Interventions seeking to solve insufficient sleep need to be multifaceted, with consideration of changing the school environment and multiple social contexts, which create stressful burdens for adolescents' development.

Background: Excessive digital media use is prevalent and has a negative impact on sleep, daytime functioning, and mental health in adolescents. We examined the prospective associations between digital media use and subsequent suicidal and non-suicidal self-harm., Methods: Shandong Adolescent Behavior & Health Cohort (SABHC) is a longitudinal study of adolescent behavior and health in Shandong, China. Participants included for the analysis were 7,072 SABHC adolescents who were initially assessed in 2015 and were reassessed in 2016. A self-administered structured questionnaire was used to measure digital media use (i.e., television watching, internet use, and mobile phone use) on weekdays and at the weekend, mental health, and self-harm., Results: Multivariable logistic regression analyses showed that daily internet use ≥2 h on weekdays (odd ratio (OR) = 1.86, 95% confidence interval(CI) = 1.25-2.76) and ≥3 h at the weekend (OR = 1.46, 95%CI = 1.06-2.00) and daily mobile phone use 2-3 h (OR = 1.46, 95%CI = 1.02-2.10) and ≥4 h (OR = 1.74, 95%CI = 1.20-2.51) at the weekend were significantly associated with increased risk of recurrent self-harm. Daily internet use ≥ 2 h on weekdays (OR = 1.81, 95%CI = 1.20-2.74) and ≥3 h at the weekend (OR = 1.55, 95%CI = 1.12-2.15), daily mobile phone use 1-2 h on weekdays (OR = 1.47, 95%CI = 1.02-2.12) and 2-3 h (OR = 1.49, 95%CI = 1.01-2.19) and ≥4 h (OR = 1.93, 95%CI = 1.31-2.85) at the weekend were significantly associated with increased risk of recurrent non-suicidal self-injury. Daily internet use 1-2 h on weekdays and 2-3 h at the weekend were significantly associated with increased risk of new suicide attempt (OR =  1.80, 95%CI =  1.07- 3.03) and recurrent suicide attempt (OR =  6.26, 95%CI = 1.31-29.88), respectively., Limitations: All data were self-reported., Conclusions: Excessive use of internet or mobile phone appears to be a significant risk factor of self-harm, suggesting that limiting adolescent use of internet and mobile phone may be beneficial to reduce risk of self-harm., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier B.V. Background: Self-injury is one of the strongest predictors of suicide. Undergraduates have been recognized as one of the populations with the highest incidence of self-injury. A substantial body of literature has documented the important influence of impulsivity on self-injury. However, few studies have focused on the mediating mechanisms underlying this relationship. Based on the stress generation hypothesis and the affect-regulation model of self-injury, this study constructed a chain mediating model to examine whether stressful life events and negative affect mediated the relationship between impulsivity and self-injury among Chinese undergraduates., Methods: A total of 2270 undergraduates (69.8% female, mean age = 19 years) were recruited to participate in this study and completed self-report measures of impulsivity, self-injury, stressful life events and negative affect., Results: (1) There were significant positive correlations among impulsivity, stressful life events, negative affect and self-injury. (2) After controlling for the effect of gender, impulsivity still had a significant positive effect on self-injury. (3) Undergraduates' self-injury was affected by impulsivity partly through 3 different pathways: the mediating role of stressful life events, the mediating role of negative affect, and the chain mediating role of both stressful life events and negative affect., Conclusions: These findings contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the risk factors for self-injury. Impulsivity, stressful life events, and negative affect might increase the occurrence of self-injury.
