Biogenic secondary organic aerosols (BSOA) play a crucial role in atmospheric chemistry, with significant implications for air quality and human health. However, the mechanisms by which anthropogenic emissions influence the formation of BSOA in the real atmosphere have not been fully understood. In this study, fine aerosol (PM 2.5) samples were collected during both the wet and dry seasons at a high-altitude (1690 m) background site in the Nanling Mountains. Eleven typical secondary organic aerosols (SOA) tracers derived from isoprene (SOA I), α/β-pinene (SOA M), β-caryophyllene (SOA S), and toluene (SOA A), as well as water-soluble inorganic ions and the ambient concentrations of isoprene and its two primary oxidation products, were measured. The results showed that the concentrations and composition of SOA tracers exhibited significant seasonal variations. The total concentration of SOA tracers in the wet season (159 ± 100 ng m−3) was almost three times higher than that in the dry season (61 ± 68 ng m−3). SOA I dominated in both seasons, followed by SOA M , SOA S , and SOA A. Compared with other studies, the concentrations of SOA I and SOA A in the wet season were relatively high, which was mainly attributed to the rapid oxidation of their precursors due to the higher atmospheric oxidative capacity. C 5 -alkene triols had a significantly higher proportion in SOA I species than in other mountaintop sites. Temperature was the main factor causing the seasonal difference in the concentration of SOA I. Anthropogenic pollutants significantly promoted the formation of SOA I in the wet season. The influence of anthropogenic pollutants on the reaction pathway of IEPOX was consistent in both seasons, favoring the formation of C 5 -alkene triols. Our study provides vital insights into the molecular characteristics and formation mechanisms of BSOA in a high-altitude background region. It also highlights that the complex air pollution not only affects BSOA concentrations but also the reaction pathways of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) transforming into BSOA. • BSOA tracers were firstly measured in Nanling Mountains. • Quick oxidation of locally emitted isoprene was the main contributor to isoprene SOA. • Strong atmospheric oxidation capacity in Mt. Understanding the formation mechanisms of secondary air pollution is very important for the formulation of air pollution control countermeasures in China. Thus, a large-scale outdoor atmospheric simulation smog chamber was constructed at Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences (the CRAES Chamber), which was designed for simulating the atmospheric photochemical processes under the conditions close to the real atmospheric environment. The chamber consisted of a 56-m3 fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP) Teflon film reactor, an electrically-driven stainless steel alloy shield, an auxiliary system, and multiple detection instrumentations. By performing a series of characterization experiments, we obtained basic parameters of the CRAES chamber, such as the mixing ability, the background reactivity, and the wall loss rates of gaseous compounds (propene, NO, NO 2 , ozone) and aerosols (ammonium sulfate). Oxidation experiments were also performed to study the formation of ozone and secondary organic aerosol (SOA), including α-pinene ozonolysis, propene and 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene photooxidation. Temperature and seed effects on the vapor wall loss and SOA yields were obtained in this work: higher temperature and the presence of seed could reduce the vapor wall loss; SOA yield was found to depend inversely on temperature, and the presence of seed could increase SOA yield. The seed was suggested to be used in the chamber to reduce the interaction between the gas phase and chamber walls. Red turpentine beetle, Dendroctonus valens (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) is a non-aggressive pine bark beetle native to North America, and more aggressive invader in China. Dispersing pioneer beetles are attracted to potential host trees by oleoresin monoterpene kairomones, but respond more strongly to those combined with ethanol, a mixture often released from stressed, dying, or recently dead trees. (+)-3-Carene, usually the dominant or co-dominant monoterpene in ponderosa pine, Pinus ponderosa, is a stronger attractant than α-pinene or β-pinene where tested over a large portion of the D. valens range, while (+)-3-carene+ethanol was shown previously to attract twice the beetles of (+)-3-carene. A field test comparing D. valens attraction among the three monoterpenes when all are released with ethanol has never been reported, and was our objective. In three US Pacific Northwestern pine forests, (–)-β-pinene+ethanol lures attracted 1.4 to 1.9 times more beetles than (+)-3-carene+ethanol. (+)- or (±)-α-pinene+ethanol lures were least attractive. A 1:1:1 monoterpene mixture+ethanol lure attracted more beetles than the 1:1:1 lure, but it was not statistically higher. Monoterpenes were dispensed from low density polyethylene bottles and their release rates monitored in laboratory and field tests. Under laboratory conditions (+)-3-carene was released much more rapidly than (+)-α-pinene or (–)-β-pinene when dispensed separately, or in a 1:1:1 mixture. (+)-3-Carene in the 1:1:1 mixture increased the release of both pinenes over their rates when dispensed separately. (–)-β-Pinene+ethanol is currently the strongest kairomone lure for D. valens attraction in US northwest pine forests, and has value for beetle detection, monitoring, research, and management. Field burning of crop residue in early summer releases a large amount of pollutants into the atmosphere with significant impacts on the air quality and aerosol properties in the North China Plain (NCP). In order to investigate the influence of this regional anthropogenic activity on molecular characteristics of organic aerosols, PM 2.5 filter samples were collected with a 3 h interval at a rural site of NCP from 10 to 25 June 2013 and analyzed for more than 100 organic tracer compounds, including both primary (n -alkanes, fatty acids/alcohols, sugar compounds, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, hopanes, and phthalate esters) and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) tracers (phthalic acids, isoprene-, α -/ β -pinene, β -caryophyllene, and toluene-derived products), as well as organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), and water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC). Total concentrations of the measured organics ranged from 177 to 6248 ng m -3 (mean 1806±1308 ng m -3) during the study period, most of which were contributed by sugar compounds, followed by fatty acids and fatty alcohols. Levoglucosan (240±288 ng m -3) was the most abundant single compound and strongly correlated with OC and WSOC, suggesting that biomass burning (BB) is an important source of summertime organic aerosols in this rural region. Based on the analysis of fire spots and backward trajectories of air masses, two representative periods were classified, which are (1) Period 1 (P1), 13 June 21:00–16 June at 15:00 CST (China Standard Time), when air masses were uniformly distributed from the southeast part of NCP, where intensive open-field biomass burning occurred; and (2) Period 2 (P2), 22 June at 12:00 to 24 June at 06:00 CST, which is representative of local emission. Nearly all the measured PM components showed much higher concentrations in P1 than in P2. Although n -alkanes, fatty acids, and fatty alcohols presented similar temporal–diurnal variations as those of levoglucosan throughout the entire period, their molecular distributions were more dominated by high molecular weight (HMW) compounds in P1, demonstrating an enhanced contribution from BB emissions. In contrast, intensive BB emission in P1 seems to have limited influence on the concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), hopanes, and phthalate esters. Both 3-hydroxyglutaric acid and β -caryophyllinic acid showed strong linearly correlations with levoglucosan (R2=0.72 and 0.80, respectively), indicating that BB is also an important source for terpene-derived SOA formation. A tracer-based method was used to estimate the distributions of biomass-burning OC, fungal-spore OC, and secondary organic carbon (SOC) derived from isoprene, α -/ β -pinene, β -caryophyllene, and toluene in the different periods. The results showed that the contribution of biomass-burning OC to total OC in P1 (27.6 %) was 1.7 times that in P2 (17.1 %). Organic nitrates are important atmospheric species that significantly affect the cycling of NOx and ozone production. However, characterization of particulate organic nitrates and their sources in polluted atmosphere is a big challenge and has not been comprehensively studied in Asia. In this study, an aerodyne high-resolution time-of-flight aerosol mass spectrometer (HR-ToF-AMS) was deployed at an urban site in China from 2015 to 2016 to characterize particulate organic nitrates in total nitrates with a high time resolution. Based on the cross-validation of two different data processing methods, organic nitrates were effectively quantified to contribute a notable fraction of organic aerosol (OA), namely 9 %–21 % in spring, 11 %–25 % in summer, and 9 %–20 % in autumn, while contributing a very small fraction in winter. The good correlation between organic nitrates and fresh secondary organic aerosol (SOA) at night, as well as the diurnal trend of size distribution of organic nitrates, indicated a key role of nighttime local secondary formation of organic nitrates. Furthermore, theoretical calculations of nighttime SOA production of NO3 reactions with volatile organic compounds (VOCs) measured during the spring campaign were performed, resulting in three biogenic VOCs (α -pinene, limonene, and camphene) and one anthropogenic VOC (styrene) identified as the possible key VOC precursors to particulate organic nitrates. The comparison with similar studies in the literature implied that nighttime particulate organic nitrate formation is highly relevant to NOx levels. This study proposes that unlike the documented cases in the United States and Europe, modeling nighttime particulate organic nitrate formation in China should incorporate not only biogenic VOCs but also anthropogenic VOCs for urban air pollution, which needs the support of relevant smog chamber studies in the future. This study investigates the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) constituents and concentration levels on a new university campus, where all of the buildings including classrooms and student dormitories were newly built and decorated within 1 year. Investigated indoor environments include dormitories, classrooms, and the library. About 30 dormitory buildings with different furniture loading ratios were measured. The characteristics of the indoor VOCs species are analyzed and possible sources are identified. The VOCs were analyzed with gas chromatography–mass spectroscopy (GC-MS). It was found that the average total VOC (TVOC) concentration can reach 2.44 mg/m3. Alkenes were the most abundant VOCs in dormitory rooms, contributing up to 86.5% of the total VOCs concentration. The concentration of α-pinene is the highest among the alkenes. Unlike the dormitory rooms, there is almost no room with TVOC concentration above 0.6 mg/m3in classroom and library buildings. Formaldehyde concentration in the dormitory rooms increased about 23.7% after the installation of furniture, and the highest level reached 0.068 mg/m3. Ammonia released from the building antifreeze material results in an average indoor concentration of 0.28 mg/m3, which is 100% over the threshold and should be seriously considered. Further experiments were conducted to analyze the source of the α-pinene and some alkanes in dormitory rooms. The results showed that the α-pinene mainly comes from the bed boards, while the wardrobes are the main sources of alkanes. The contribution of the pinewood bed boards to the α-pinene and TVOC concentration can reach up to above 90%. The same type rooms were sampled 1 year later and the decay rate of α-pinene is quite high, close to 100%, so that it almost cannot be detected in the sampled rooms. Implications: Analysis of indoor volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in newly built campus buildings in China identified the specific constituents of indoor VOCs contaminants exposed to Chinese college students. The main detected substances α-pinene, β-pinene, and 3-carene originated from solid wood bed boards and should be seriously considered. In addition, the contribution rates of building structure materials and furniture to specific VOCs constituents are quantitative calculated. Also, the decay rates of these specific constituents within 1 year are also quantitative calculated in this paper. This study can help us to better understand the sources and concentration levels of VOC contaminants in campus buildings, and to help select appropriate materials in buildings. Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo), including Notopterygium incisum Ting ex H. T. Chang (NI) and Notopterygium franchetii H. de Boiss (NF), is an important traditional Chinese medicine. Of these two plants, NI, is more commonly used and has a much higher price in the marketplace. To compare these two plants, a combination of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was carried out, thus obtaining an overall characterization for both volatile and none-volatile compounds. Combined with hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) and principal component analysis, GC-MS was successfully applied to distinguish NF and NI. The chemical constitutes of volatile oil in NI and NF were firstly compared in detail, and 1R-alpha-pinene, beta-pinene and 4-isopropyl-1-methyl-1,4-cyclohexadiene had great contribution to the discrimination. Fingerprints of 14 batches of Qinghuo samples were also established based on HPLC, and an obvious difference was found between the two species. The chromatographic fingerprints were further analyzed by similarity analysis and HCA. The present study is the first reported evaluation of two origins of Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix by GC-MS and HPLC, which will facilitate quality control and its clinical application. Secondary organic aerosols (SOA) are important atmospheric pollutants that affect air quality, radiation, and human health. In this study, 14 typical SOA tracers were measured in PM 2.5 collected from three central cities of the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region in the winter of 2014 and the summer of 2015. Among the determined SOA tracers, α/β-pinene SOA tracers contributed 55.9%, followed by isoprene SOA tracers (33.7%), anthropogenic benzene SOA tracer (6.4%) and β-caryophyllene SOA tracer (4.0%). There was no significant difference in the concentration of individual SOA tracers among the three cities (p > 0.05), indicating a high degree of regional consistency. The concentrations of isoprene, α/β-pinene, and toluene SOA tracers were significantly higher in summer than in winter. A correlation of SOA tracers with temperature implies that the isoprene and α/β-pinene SOA tracers in summer were greatly boosted by plant emissions and the high DHOPA in summer could be attributed to evaporation of paint and solvent. In contrast, the elevated β-caryophyllene SOA tracer in winter was likely associated with active biomass burning. Furthermore, we observed a close correlation of summer isoprene and α/β-pinene SOA tracers with sulfate only in Shanghai, which verifies that biogenic SOA formation was facilitated by high concentration of sulfate. The ratios of MGA/MTLs and P/M were applied to reveal the impact of NO x on SOA formation and the aging degree of SOA, respectively. The MGA/MTLs ratios were comparable for the three cities, but much higher than the background value of this region as expected. The P/M ratios suggest that the aging degree of SOA in the YRD region was generally low, but the winter SOA were fresher than the summer SOA. In this paper, an analytical method using a simple semi-manual cryo-trap technique coupled to gas chromatograph with flame ionisation detector (GC-FID) was developed for the determination of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOC) in ambient air. Five common BVOC species have been tested, including isoprene and 4 monoterpenes, i.e. α-pinene, β-pinene, 3-carene (Δ) and limonene. The detection limits were estimated to be about 20 ppt for isoprene and 10 ppt for monoterpenes, with sample injection volume of 50 mL. Based on vegetation types, field measurement work was conducted over urban and rural sites of Hong Kong during summer and winter of 2007. Canister sampling technique was applied in the field measurement. Isoprene contents in rural ambient air were found to be in the range of 60∼1560 ppt in winter and 260∼3270 ppt in summer, respectively. However, in the measurement of monoterpenes, due to their extremely low concentration in the air samples, only β-pinene and limonene were detected by the developed analytical method. • Variations could be presented overall in the combination of three techniques. • Finger citron samples at different pickling stages could be distinguished. • Salting and drying had the greatest effect on volatile components of finger citron. • The characteristic flavor components were formed during salting and drying steps. The pickled products of finger citron are famous in southern China for their unique taste and flavor. Although pickling process involves complex treatments including salting, desalting, sugaring, cooking and drying, extended shelf-life up to ten years after pickling can be achieved. In this study, the variations of volatile flavour components in the pickling process of finger citron were investigated by electronic nose (E-nose), headspace solid phase microextraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS) and headspace-gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (HS-GC-IMS). HS-SPME-GC-MS identified 85 substances, and HS-GC-IMS identified 81 substances, including terpenoids (21), aromatic hydrocarbons (11), alcohols (11), aldehydes (10), esters (7), phenols (6), acids (5), ethers (2), ketones (2), and other species (10). Linalool, limonene, (E)-3,7-dimethyl-1,3,6-octatriene, myrcene, 3-carene, β-pinene, α-pinene, terpinolene, 1-methyl-4-(1-methylethyl)-1,4-cyclohexadiene, α-terpinene, (S)-β-bisabolene, 1-isopropyl-2-methylbenzene and 1-methyl-4-(1-methylethenyl)-benzene were the stable substances at relatively high contents in finger citron at different pickling process. Salting and drying steps in the pickling process exerted greatest influence on the volatile components of finger citron. Salting promoted the generation of aldehydes, esters and acids, but led to the disappearance of alcohols, while drying promoted the generation of alcohols, phenols, aldehydes and acids at the expense of reduction in terpenoids. Our study revealed that the characteristic volatile compounds of finger citron pickled products was mainly formed by the biological reactions in the salting stage and thermal chemical transformations in the drying stage. This study also validated the suitability of E-nose combined with HS-SPME-GC-MS and HS-GC-IMS in tracking the changes of volatile components in finger citron during the pickling process. The chemical composition of the essential oil obtained from pine cones of Pinus koraiensis and Pinus sylvestris from northeast China was analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/ MS), and 35 and 31 components were identified, respectively. α-pinene (35.2%), limonene (18.4%), β-pinene (8.7%), b-caryophyllene (3.5%) and myrcene (3.0%) were the main components in P. koraiensis cone oil. Aromadendrene (20.2%), a-pinene (18.5%), α-longipinene (10.5%) and α-terpineol (5.5%) were the main components in P. sylvestris cone oil. This article focuses on a study related to the contact allergy to oil of turpentine with a 10-year retrospective view. Sensitivity to turpentine is decreasing in western Europe. No cross-reactions were occurred in guinea pigs sensitized with Chinese or German balsam turpentine. In the study, for patch testing 10% turpentine in olive oil was used. Sources of turpentine sensitivity probably vary across various regions. Turpentine is used in certain floor polishes and liquid cleaners for outdoor monuments.
