Algal organic matter (AOM), a significant source of endogenous dissolved organic matter (DOM) is released in high concentrations during cyanobacterial blooms, along with cyanotoxins. Subsequent photobleaching of AOM is an important phenomenon to investigate. In this study, intracellular organic matter (IOM) and extracellular organic matter (EOM) were extracted from cultured cyanobacteria taken from Taihu Lake in China. The formation of photochemically produced reactive intermediates in different stages of IOM and EOM photobleaching was compared to Suwannee River DOM (SRDOM, reference standard DOM). Results revealed notable differences influenced by the pigment component among IOM, EOM, and SRDOM. The pigment in IOM contributed to a triplet state pool with strong energy-transfer but limited electron-transfer capabilities. Notably, IOM exhibited the highest triplets state quantum yield value in the visible region, suggesting its potential significance in pollutant degradation in deeper water layers. For EOM, one of the pools exhibits photolability and remarkable electron-transfer capability, indicating it as a high-energy triplet state component. Moreover, three cyanotoxins (MC-LR, ACA, and ATX-a) were detected in the extracted AOM, and their photodegradation was monitored during the AOM photobleaching process. This highlights the potential role of AOM as a photosensitizer in the natural self-cleaning mechanisms of water bodies, facilitating the degradation of organic pollutants through photochemical reactions. Sunlight plays an important role in the photochemical processes of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM), which is closely related to water self-purification and primary productivity of healthy aquatic ecosystem health. The fine particles of haze, a widespread air pollutant, absorb natural ultraviolet (UV) irradiation and have an unknown degree of influence on the photochemical transformation of CDOM. Here, an in-situ experiment investigating how the amount and composition of CDOM changes under hazy conditions was conducted in Ningbo, southeastern China, a city that frequently suffers from seasonal haze pollution. The results indicated that haze attenuated UV light under different weather conditions. The UV intensities were reduced from 1124.90 ± 91.58 to 510.26 ± 40.26 μW cm -2 and 748.54 ± 101.68 to 316.32 ± 40.48 μW cm -2 on sunny and cloudy days, respectively; these values approached those on rainy days (186.97 ± 28.58 μW cm -2 ). Consequently, the loss of dissolved organic carbon during the irradiation test was reduced on hazy days (e.g., from 5.63% to 2.59% on sunny/hazy days). The impact of haze on CDOM photobleaching was further assessed by an excitation-emission matrix (EEM) combined with parallel factor (PARAFAC) analysis. On hazy days, the EEM-PARAFAC components were saved from photobleaching to different degrees; and humic-like substances showed a stronger protective effect from haze than protein-like substances because of their higher photosensitivity. Consequently, haze could cause more terrestrial CDOM to remain in surface water. UV intensity played a critical role in the composition characteristics of CDOM. Summary: We report on some of the optical properties of Hemoporfin® (hematoporphyrin monomethyl ether, HMME), a photodynamic therapy (PDT) photosensitizer that has been in clinical trials in China since the early 1990s. We characterized the photosensitizer on the basis of one- and two-photon absorption and fluorescence emission. The effects of photobleaching were probed to characterize its decay kinetics. Additionally, we determined time resolved fluorescence and thermal effects on fluorescence and absorption properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To investigate the seasonal and interannual dynamics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the Yangtze Estuary, surface and bottom water samples in the Yangtze Estuary and its adjacent sea were collected and characterized using fluorescence excitation-emission matrices (EEMs) and parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) in both dry and wet seasons in 2012 and 2013. Two protein-like components and three humic-like components were identified. Three humic-like components decreased linearly with increasing salinity (r>0.90, p<0.001), suggesting their distribution could primarily be controlled by physical mixing. By contrast, two protein-like components fell below the theoretical mixing line, largely due to microbial degradation and removal during mixing. Higher concentrations of humic-like components found in 2012 could be attributed to higher freshwater discharge relative to 2013. There was a lack of systematic patterns for three humic-like components between seasons and years, probably due to variations of other factors such as sources and characteristics. Highest concentrations of fluorescent components, observed in estuarine turbidity maximum (ETM) region, could be attributed to sediment resuspension and subsequent release of DOM, supported by higher concentrations of fluorescent components in bottom water than in surface water at two stations where sediments probably resuspended. Meanwhile, photobleaching could be reflected from the changes in the ratios between fluorescence intensity (Fmax) of humic-like components and chromophoric DOM (CDOM) absorption coefficient (a355) along the salinity gradient. This study demonstrates the abundance and composition of DOM in estuaries are controlled not only by hydrological conditions, but also by its sources, characteristics and related estuarine biogeochemical processes.

The absorption spectra of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM), along with general physical, chemical and biological variables, were determined in the Bohai Bay, China, in the springs of 2011 and 2012. The absorption coefficient of CDOM at 350 nm (a350) in surface water ranged from 1.00 to 1.83 m⁻¹ (mean: 1.35 m⁻¹) in May 2011 and from 0.78 to 1.92 m⁻¹ (mean: 1.19 m⁻¹) in April 2012. Little surface-bottom difference was observed due to strong vertical mixing. The a350 was weakly anti-correlated to salinity but positively correlated to chlorophyll a (Chl-a) concentration. A shoulder over 260-290 nm, suggestive of biogenic molecules, superimposed the overall pattern of exponentially decreasing CDOM absorption with wavelength. The wavelength distribution of the absorption spectral slope manifested a pronounced peak at ca. 300 nm characteristic of algal-derived CDOM. All a250/a365 ratios exceeded 6, corresponding to CDOM molecular weights (Mw) of less than 1 kDa. Spectroscopically, CDOM in the Bohai Bay differed substantively from that in the Haihe River, the bay's dominant source of land runoff; photobleaching of the riverine CDOM enlarged the difference. Results point to marine biological production being the principal source of CDOM in the Bohai Bay during the sampling seasons. Relatively low runoff, fast dilution, and selective photodegradation are postulated to be among the overarching elements responsible for the lack of terrigenous CDOM signature in the bay water., (Copyright © 2014.
