The plant pathogenic fungus Cytospora is notoriously known for causing woody plant canker diseases, resulting in substantial economic losses to biological forests and fruit trees worldwide. Despite their strong negative ecological impact, the existing and prospective distribution patterns of these plant pathogens in China, according to climate change, have received little attention. In this study, we chose three widely dispersed and seriously damaging species, namely, Cytospora chrysosperma, Cytospora mali, and Cytospora nivea, which are the most common species that damage the Juglans regia, Malus domestica, Eucalyptus, Pyrus sinkiangensis, Populus spp., and Salix spp. in China. We utilized ecological niche modeling to forecast their regional distribution in China under four climate change scenarios (present, SSP 126, SSP 370, and SSP 585). The results show that temperature-related climate factors limit the current distribution ranges of the three species. Currently, the three studied species are highly suitable for northeast, northwest, north, and southwest China. Under future climate scenarios, the distribution ranges of the three species are projected to increase, and the centers of the adequate distribution areas of the three species are expected to shift to high-latitude regions. The three species coexist in China, primarily in the northwest and north regions. The ecological niches of C. chrysosperma and C. nivea are more similar. The distribution range of C. mali can reach the warmer and wetter eastern region, whereas C. chrysosperma and C. nivea are primarily found in drought-prone areas with little rainfall. Our findings can help farmers and planners develop methods to avoid the spread of Cytospora spp. and calculate the costs of applying pesticides to reduce contamination and boost yields. Aim: The widely observed positive response of productivity to biodiversity, known as the biodiversity‐productivity relationship (BPR), underpins nature‐based solutions for mitigating and adapting to global changes. Little is known of the role of such emergent processes in the restoration of damaged ecosystems. Here, we test for evidence of a BPR in degraded freshwater lakes, and its role in underpinning or undermining lake recovery from eutrophic states. Location: Lower Yangtze and Huaihe river basins, China, East Asia. Taxa: Freshwater phytoplankton; also macrophytes, fish, zooplankton and zoobenthos. Methods: A systematic review of biodiversity studies was conducted to enumerate freshwater biodiversity change during eutrophication, encompassing 572 samples from 155 lakes in East China. Empirical samples were then taken of 93 phytoplankton communities from 38 lakes in ecologically degraded states of eutrophication. Samples were analysed for niche overlap in relation to biodiversity and productivity, and metrics of network structure indicative of community stability. Results: Reviewed publications on eutrophication in East China lakes revealed losses in biodiversity of macrophytes, fishes, zooplankton and zoobenthos but not phytoplankton. Empirically sampled eutrophic lakes maintained high phytoplankton biodiversity through niche differentiation, and phytoplankton biodiversity correlated positively with biomass, in line with the expectations of BPR. Conclusions: The positive effect of biodiversity on phytoplankton productivity in eutrophic lakes acts in opposition to the negative impacts on productivity induced by eutrophication‐management strategies of nutrient suppression. In degraded systems, the BPR contributes to sustaining productivity of lake phytoplankton communities, impeding recovery from a eutrophic state. This is a case of the BPR playing an undesirable role at the ecosystem level. Lake recovery programmes need to anticipate that the control of phytoplankton biomass will depend on reducing nutrients to a level sufficient to degrade the internal structure of the phytoplankton community. Global biodiversity is contracting rapidly due to potent anthropogenic activities and severe climate change. Wild populations of Rosa chinensis var. spontanea and Rosa lucidissima are rare species endemic to China, as well as important germplasm resources for rose breeding. However, these populations are at acute risk of extinction and require urgent action to ensure their preservation.We harnessed 16 microsatellite loci to 44 populations of these species and analysed population structure and differentiation, demographic history, gene flow and barrier effect. In addition, a niche overlap test and potential distribution modelling in different time periods were also carried out.The data indicate that: (1) R. lucidissima cannot be regarded as a separate species from R. chinensis var. spontanea; (2) the Yangtze River and the Wujiang River function as barriers in population structure and differentiation, and precipitation in the coldest quarter may be the key factor for niche divergence of R. chinensis var. spontanea complex; (3) historical gene flow showed a converse tendency to current gene flow, indicating that alternate migration events of R. chinensis var. spontanea complex between south and north were a response to climate oscillations; and (4) extreme climate change will decrease the distribution range of R. chinensis var. spontanea complex, whereas the opposite will occur under a moderate scenario for the future.Our results resolve the relationship between R. chinensis var. spontanea and R. lucidissima, highlight the pivotal roles of geographic isolation and climate heterogeneity in their population differentiation, and provide an important reference for comparable conservation studies on other endangered species. Species co-existence depends on how organisms utilize their environment and resources. Little is known about the winter diet composition and sympatric co-existence of South China sika deer and its companion species in Taohongling. In this study, high-throughput sequencing and metabarcoding trnL were used to study the diet composition and interspecific relationship including sika deer, Reeve’s muntjac, and Chinese hare. Our results show that 203 genera in 90 families are contained in the diet of sika deer, 203 genera in 95 families for Reeve’s muntjac, and 163 genera in 75 families for Chinese hare. Sika deer fed on Rubus chingii, Loropetalum chinense, and Eurya japonica in winter, accounting for 75.30%; Reeve’s muntjac consumed mainly R. chingii, E. japonica, and Euonymus grandiflorus, accounting for 68.80%, and Chinese hare mainly fed on R. chingii, Smilax china, and Rhus chinensis, accounting for 41.98%. The Shannon index showed no significant difference between groups (p > 0.05). The NMDS analysis found considerable overlap among three species. Sika deer and Reeve’s muntjac consumed similar forage plants but varied greatly in Chinese hare, which occupied the widest choice in winter, resulting in higher diet breadth and increased dietary divergence, thereby reducing competition and facilitating coexistence. Climate change affects parasitic plants and their hosts on distributions. However, little is known about how parasites and their hosts shift in distribution, and niche overlap in response to global change remains unclear to date. Here, the potential distribution and habitat suitability of four endangered holoparasites and their primary hosts in northern China were predicted using MaxEnt based on occurrence records and bioclimatic variables. The results indicated that (1) Temperature annual range (Bio7) and Precipitation of driest quarter (Bio17) were identified as the common key climatic factors influencing distribution (percentage contribution > 10%) for Cynomorium songaricum vs. Nitraria sibirica (i.e., parasite vs. host); Temperature seasonality (Bio4) and Precipitation of driest month (Bio14) for Boschniakia rossica vs. Alnus mandshurica; Bio4 for Cistanche deserticola vs. Haloxylon ammodendron; Precipitation of warmest quarter (Bio18) for Cistanche mongolica vs. Tamarix ramosissima. Accordingly, different parasite-host pairs share to varying degree the common climatic factors. (2) Currently, these holoparasites had small suitable habitats (i.e., moderately and highly) (0.97–3.77%), with few highly suitable habitats (0.19– 0.81%). Under future scenarios, their suitable habitats would change to some extent; their distribution shifts fell into two categories: growing type (Boschniakia rossica and Cistanche mongolica) and fluctuating type (Cynomorium songaricum and Cistanche deserticola). In contrast, the hosts’ current suitable habitats (1.42–13.43%) varied greatly, with highly restricted suitable habitats (0.18–1.00%). Under future scenarios, their suitable habitats presented different trends: growing type (Nitraria sibirica), declining type (Haloxylon ammodendron) and fluctuating type (the other hosts). (3) The niche overlaps between parasites and hosts differed significantly in the future, which can be grouped into two categories: growing type (Boschniakia rossica vs. Alnus mandshurica, Cistanche mongolica vs. Tamarix ramosissima), and fluctuating type (the others). Such niche overlap asynchronies may result in severe spatial limitations of parasites under future climate conditions. Our findings indicate that climate factors restricting parasites and hosts’ distributions, niche overlaps between them, together with parasitic species identity, may jointly influence the suitable habitats of parasitic plants. Therefore, it is necessary to take into account the threatened holoparasites themselves in conjunction with their suitable habitats and the parasite-host association when developing conservation planning in the future. Wild animals can adapt to their environments under natural selection pressure. Sympatric species with similar niches compete and achieve coexistence through habitat separation. Using the line transect method from July to September 2019, we examined summer habitat use and niche overlap between Chinese goral (Naemorhedus griseus) and Siberian roe deer (Capreolus pygargus) in the Taihang mountains surrounding Beijing, China. We found that Chinese goral preferred habitats with higher elevation, tree density, vegetation, cover, and a number of stumps. In contrast, tree diameter at breast height, number of fallen wood, and dry grass cover in habitats of Chinese goral were significantly lower than those of Siberian roe deer. It used shrub habitats with moderate to poor shelter from the winds, while Siberian roe deer used both tree and shrub habitats with good hiding cover and good shelter from the winds. Siberian roe deer were more likely to occur in habitats far from human communities. The two species showed marked niche overlap (Pianka's index = 0.869). To reduce competition and coexist in the same region, both species were separated mainly in spatial and trophic niches. Therefore, maintaining valuable shrub habitats in higher elevations and tree and shrub habitats far from human settlements will facilitate the coexistence of the two ungulates. Biological invasion is one of the important reasons for the decline of freshwater biodiversity in China and even in the world. The Pearl river basin is one of the most threatened areas in China by biological invasion. Over the past four decades, mrigal carp Cirrhinus mrigala and rohu Labeo rohita have invaded the Pearl river. They potentially pose a huge threat to a well-known economic species, native mud carp Cirrhinus molitorella. However, little is known about the likely habitat distributions of these two invasive species, which limits our management of them. In this study, we detected the stable isotope ratios of nitrogen and carbon for fish and quantified their niche overlap with nicheROVER in R. The result showed that the individuals of two invasive species had a higher probability to be found in niche region of native C. molitorella (i.e., 65 % for C. mrigala and 74 % for L. rohita). Moreover, to increase understanding of their habitat distributions and potential range of spread, the existing habitats data of these three fish species obtained from previous literatures and the high-resolution bioclimatic parameters from WorldClim were analyzed via Maxent model. The results stressed that niche overlap was high among species, which could have an impact on local biodiversity in future. Understanding how species sort themselves into communities is essential to explain the mechanisms that maintain biodiversity. Important insights into potential mechanisms of coexistence may be obtained from observation of non-random patterns in community assembly. The spatial niche overlap (Pianka index) and co-occurrence (c-score) patterns in carabid species in three types of steppes (desert steppe, typical steppe, and meadow steppe) in China was investigated. Non randomness was tested using null models. Niche overlap values were significantly higher than expected by chance in the desert steppe, where vegetation cover is less abundant and less uniformly distributed, which possibly forces species to concentrate in certain places. In the typical and meadow steppes, results were influenced by the scale of the analysis. At a broad scale, niche separation was found as a result of species segregation among different sectors (habitats) within these steppes, but when the analysis was conducted at a finer scale, species appeared to be no more segregated than expected by chance. The high co-occurrence averages found in the meadow and typical steppes indicate that the distributions of the species found in a site may be negatively affected by the presence of other species, which suggests that some species tend to exclude (or reduce the abundance of) others. The very low c-score average observed in the desert steppe suggests that competition is not involved there. Thus, in more homogeneous landscapes (such as the typical and meadow steppes), competition might play some role in community structure, whereas spatial variation in the abundances of species is more driven by the uneven spatial distribution of vegetation in the landscape where productivity is lower and less uniformly distributed. The distribution of mangroves is influenced by the environment. We aimed to understand the ecological adaptability of various mangrove species within the range of the exotic species, Sonneratia apetala Buch.‐Ham., in Dongzhai Harbor, Hainan Island, China. We used three niche breadth indexes (Simpson, Levins, and Shannon–Weiner) and two niche overlap indexes (Pianka and Levins) to quantitatively determine the niche characteristics of nine mangrove species. The results showed that the order of the niche breadth values of mangrove species was as follows: Aegiceras corniculatum (Linn.) Blanco > Kandelia obovata Sheue et al. > Bruguiera gymnorrhiza (L.) Poir. > Avicennia marina (Forsk.) Vierh. Hailanci > S. apetala > S. caseolaris (L.) Engl. > Rhizophora stylosa Griff > Ceriops tagal (Perr.) C. B. Rob. > B. sexangula (Lour.) Poir. Pearson correlation analysis revealed that the niche breadth of each population was significantly correlated with the importance value of the population in the whole sample (R1 = R2 = 0.771, R3 = 0.644, p <.05). The nine mangrove species were divided into three groups by Bray–Curtis cluster analysis; the groups were similar to the distribution of mangrove species in the natural state as determined by tide level. Niche similarity analysis showed that the niche similarity of most mangroves ranged between 0.5 and 0.8 and that the species pairs A. corniculatum–B. gymnorrhiza, A. corniculatum–Avicennia marina, and K. obovata–S. caseolaris were characterized by large niche similarity ratios. Although it had a moderate niche breadth, S. apetala had a relatively broad niche overlap with mangroves in the mid‐ and low‐tide zones (S. caseolaris, A. corniculatum, K. obovata, and Avicennia marina), a moderate overlap with B. gymnorrhiza and R. stylosa, only a slight overlap with C. tagal, and no overlap with B. sexangular. There was no obvious linear relationship between niche width and niche overlap of mangroves. Due to its inefficiency in utilizing certain resources and relatively high degree of resource selection, it seems likely that S. apetala will not pose a threat to the survival of native plants, let alone completely replace native species. Climate change has impacted the distribution and abundance of numerous plant and animal species during the last century. Orchidaceae is one of the largest yet most threatened families of flowering plants. However, how the geographical distribution of orchids will respond to climate change is largely unknown. Habenaria and Calanthe are among the largest terrestrial orchid genera in China and around the world. In this paper, we modeled the potential distribution of eight Habenaria species and ten Calanthe species in China under the near-current period (1970-2000) and the future period (2081-2100) to test the following two hypotheses: 1) narrow-ranged species are more vulnerable to climate change than wide-ranged species; 2) niche overlap between species is positively correlated with their phylogenetic relatedness. Our results showed that most Habenaria species will expand their ranges, although the climatic space at the southern edge will be lost for most Habenaria species. In contrast, most Calanthe species will shrink their ranges dramatically. Contrasting range changes between Habenaria and Calanthe species may be explained by their differences in climate-adaptive traits such as underground storage organs and evergreen/deciduous habits. Habenaria species are predicted to generally shift northwards and to higher elevations in the future, while Calanthe species are predicted to shift westwards and to higher elevations. The mean niche overlap among Calanthe species was higher than that of Habenaria species. No significant relationship between niche overlap and phylogenetic distance was detected for both Habenaria and Calanthe species. Species range changes in the future was also not correlated with their near current range sizes for both Habenaria and Calanthe. The results of this study suggest that the current conservation status of both Habenaria and Calanthe species should be adjusted. The paper quantitatively analyzes the niches of main plant species of different community types in Mulinzi Nature Reserve. With each sample as a comprehensive resource, the Simpson index, Shannon-Wiener niche width formula and Pianka niche overlap formula are used to measure the niche breadth and overlap of main dominant species in the secondary forest communities with natural recovery of 20 years, 35 years and around 100 years, respectively. The niches changes of the main dominant species of different community types are compared and the reasons are analyzed. At the same time, the environment adaptability of the populations in different natural recovery phases are discussed. The results show that: 1) Cyclobalanopsis glauca belongs to the constructive species of the subtropical evergreen and deciduous broad-leaved mixed forest in Mulinzi Nature Reserve, having the maximum of niche breadth (in CommunityⅠ B'(SW)i is 0.750, B'(L)i is 0.863; in CommunityⅡ B'(SW)i is 0.630, B'(L)i is 0.685; and in Community Ⅲ B'(SW)i is 0.625, B'(L)i is 0.658) and high degree of niche overlap with other populations. The longer the natural recovery, the more obvious its dominant position. 2) Human disturbance and light are the main factors that affect the main dominant species niche changes of different community types in the area. 3) In different community types, the average niche breadth value of the main dominant species are: B'(SW)i is 0.603, B'(L)i is 0.570, and the average niche overlap value is 0.564. It shows that in all kinds of communities the ecological amplitudes and the resource utilization spectrums are wide, and the community structures are complex, and the competition of environmental resources between various groups is not fierce. 4) The importance value and niche breadth of Davidia involucrata are the lowest (The IV is 0.181, B'(SW)i is 0.292 and B'(L)i is 0.109). It has little or no overlap with other populations. It shows that its adaptability to the community environment and its resources utilization ability are weak, and it has a certain degree of differentiation with the ecological niche of other populations. The species composition of the community is not the same because of the different community structure and natural recovery, so the niche of the dominant populations in different community types in the main forest layer changes in this area. It reveals the rule that the niche of dominant species changes with natural recovery, which provides an important reference for the operation and management of this kind of forests. An index of relative importance (IRI) was employed to screen for dominant fish in the waters surrounding the Taishan Islands, China, using data from four seasonal trawl surveys undertaken between 2012 and 2013. Niche breadth and niche overlap were measured using the Feinsinger and Morisita-Horn indices, respectively, and the characteristics and seasonal variations in the niches of dominant fish were assessed via non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) and cluster analysis. A total of 80 fish species, including 16 dominant species, were recorded. Only Amblychaeturichthys hexanema was dominant in all seasons. According to niche breadth values and NMDS, the 16 dominant species were grouped into the following three types: (1) wide niche breadth species, including Cynoglossus macrolepidotus, A. hexanema, and Trypauchen vagina, among others; (2) medium niche breadth species, including Setipinna taty and Johnius belangerii; and (3) narrow niche breadth species, including Atrobucca nibe and Coilia mystus. Most species with a wider niche breadth were demersal fish with a lower swimming capability and even distribution. The niche breadth of migrating fish was narrower than that of settled fish. At a given spatial scale, fish with stronger swimming capabilities had a narrower niche breadth. Niche overlap, which is associated with niche specialization, ranged from 0.000 to 0.886 and had an annual mean value of 0.314. In summer and autumn, niche overlap was relatively high within species of the Sciaenidae family and within species of the Gobiidae in autumn. Differences in thermophily, feeding habits, food organism abundance/distribution and predator-prey relationships affected the niche overlap of fish in this area. Cluster analysis revealed that species with the narrowest niche breadth and lowest niche overlap values usually displayed lower aggregation and greater distribution differences compared with other species. With the rapid development of domestic tourism and the intensive competition in this area, regional tourism cooperation has become more competitive. This competitiveness helps to maintain the sustainable development of tourism destinations and improve the attractiveness of regional tourism resources. Previously, traditional city development has focused on internal resource allocation and ignored the introduction of external resources that block the integration of regional tourism and the establishment of a tourism cooperation system. Tourism cooperation based on each city's tourism brand is the most direct and convenient way for the integration of regional cooperation mechanisms. The current study of regional urban tourism brands uses mainly qualitative analysis and a cooperative system based on the historical experience and judgments of periodic market performance. However, this system unfortunately lacks a thorough analysis of the internal structure of the brand. This article therefore: introduces niche theory and mathematical methods to regional urban tourism brand cooperation research; quantitatively analyses the current development situation and the competition between these brands; and explores the brand cooperation mechanism and development strategies. Previous studies on regional urban tourism brand cooperation have focused on the concept and strategies of regional urban tourism brands through qualitative research based on empirical analysis.? The brand positioning of core cities has been used to study the current situation of the tourist market and tourism resources development. These studies tend to overlook the emerging tourist cities and tourism resources, which leads to a one-sided view of regional tourism brand positioning and a low participation rate by rising tourism cities. The qualitative method also undervalues the science of the brand system, and the universality of research methods, which is unfavorable to brand system research. Despite the rapid development of regional urban tourism brands in recent years problems exist (such as low brand awareness, the lack of brand influence and a high renewal frequency of brands) that hinder the improvement of brand awareness and its reputation. This article analyzes the establishment of a regional urban tourism brand cooperation system based on the theories of a life system, that is, the brand system as an organism. It introduces niche theory metrics and explores the system of urban tourism brand cooperation from the perspectives of niche symbiosis, niche overlapping and resource contention. Then it puts forward the cooperation strategies of urban tourism brands, taking into account the development paths of individual cities. Using the brands of cities in the Shandong provincial capital metropolitan area, it focuses on ecosystems of the regional urban tourism brand, builds an index system to determine the degree of niche overlap and strength of each brand, and gains a clear understanding of a single tourism brand' s competitiveness with its major competitors. It also examines the core brand known as the 'key species', rebuilds a structured system of regional urban tourist brands, and proposes the general development strategy of the tourist brand. Cyanobacterial blooms occur frequently in lakes due to eutrophication. Although a number of models have been proposed to forecast algal blooms, a good and applicable method is still lacking. This study explored a simple and effective mathematical-ecological model to evaluate the growth status and predict the population dynamics of Microcystis blooms. In this study, phytoplankton were collected and identified from 8 sampling sites in Chaohu Lake every month from July to October, 2010. The niche breadth and niche overlap of common species were calculated using standard equations, and the potential relative growth rates of Microcystis were calculated as a weighted-value of niche overlap. In July, the potential relative growth rate was 2.79 (a.u., arbitrary units) but then rapidly declined in the following months to −3.99 a.u. in September. A significant correlation ( R =0.998, P <0.01) was found in the model between the net-increase in biomass of Microcystis in the field and the predicted values calculated by the niche model, we concluded that the niche model is suitable for forecasting the dynamics of Microcystis blooms. Redundancy analysis indicated that decreases in water temperature, dissolved oxygen and total dissolved phosphorus might be major factors underlying bloom decline. Based on the theory of community succession being caused by resource competition, the growth and decline of blooms can be predicted from a community structure. Understanding how functional traits distributed across ecological scales as well as environmental gradients are central issues of trait-based assembly processes. However, whether environmental filters act on individuals or species mean traits remains poorly tested. Here, we measured four functional traits – shoot height, specific leaf area, lamina thickness, and leaf dry mass content – of 4432 individuals from 30 submersed macrophyte species across 26 lakes in south China, covering a broad nutrient gradient. We partitioned trait variances into four nested ecological scales (i.e., region, community, species, individual) and assessed how the internal and external filters structured the submersed macrophyte community, either through acting on individual or on species mean traits, and how these processes related to nutrient enrichment. For the four tested traits, 13–60% of trait variability occurred within species (individual level), while 35–86% occurred among species (species level), followed by community and regional level. Species turnover contributed most to the community-wide variance along the nutrient gradient caused considerable intraspecific variations of shoot height. We found significant strong internal filtering effects on the submersed macrophyte community, which increased towards higher nutrient levels. The external filtering effects were only observed at individual level, with lower shoot height, specific leaf area, and leaf dry mass content than expected at low nutrient levels, and lower lamina thickness than expected at high nutrient levels. Our study provides new insight into the assembly processes by showing that niche overlap (i.e., intraspecific interaction) and niche differentiation (i.e., interspecific interaction) can simultaneously occur in different functional traits, both potentially promoting local species diversity. Based on seasonal bottom trawl surveys in November 2015 (autumn), February (winter), May (spring) and August (summer) in 2016, the index of relative importance (IRI), Shannon index and Pianka index were used to analyze the breadth and overlap of spatio-temporal niche of major fish species in the Pishan waters off Zhejiang Province. Redundancy analysis and interspecific competition coefficient were used to examine the competition relationship and niche differentiation of those major fish species. The results showed that a total of 61 fish species were recorded throughout the year, which belonged to 13 orders, 29 families and 48 genera. A total of 19 species with IRI&gt;100 were identified as major fish species. The temporal niche overlap value between Chelidonichthys kumu and Atule kalla was largest, indicating high temporal synchronization. Both the spatial niche overlap value and the spatio-temporal niche overlap value between Trpauchen vagina and Cynoglossus interruptus were largest, indicating that their spatial homology was high and that the use of spatial and temporal two-dimensional resource of both species were consistent. The percentage of species pairs with spatio-temporal niche overlap at the significant level ( Q ik &gt;0.6) was only 5.8% in Pishan waters, indicating that the spatial and temporal distribution of those species were quite different. The overlap of spatio-temporal niche significantly varied across different seasons. The results of the interspecific competition coefficient were basically consistent with the niche overlap. Results of the redundancy analysis revealed the relationships between major fish species and environmental factors (temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen), and further explained the niche diffe-rentiation among species.

The index of dominance ( S ), average crowding ( X * ), niche breadth ( B i ), and niche overlap ( Q ik ) of dominant zooplankton species were calculated using data collected from four zooplankton surveys from May 2016 to February 2017 in Yueqing Bay, Zhejiang Province. The results showed that there were 17 dominant zooplankton species (with S ＞0.02). The niche breadth values of those dominant species differed greatly and were positively correlated with S . The niche overlaps of zooplanktons were extremely low. The total amount of species pairs with niche overlap higher than 0.6 ( Q ik ＞0.6) were 25 in Yueqing Bay, which represented 18.4% of the total pairs. Results from the redundancy analysis showed that the distribution of dominant zooplankton species was mainly affected by temperature and salinity, which caused ecological differentiation of zooplankton species.

To understand the relationships among dominant species of cephalopods in offshore nor-thern South China Sea, we examined the niche characteristics of these dominant species from both spatial and temporal dimensions using the index of relative importance ( IRI ), the niche breadth and overlap indices based on fishery resources data from the bottom-trawl survey for four seasons during 2014-2015. The results showed that five dominant species of cephalopods were recorded for four seasons, including Loligo edulis , L. chinensis , L. beka , Sepia esculenta , and L. duvaucelii . The first two species were shared by all seasons. Compared with historical data, the composition of dominant cephalopods species had changed. The cephalopods resource exhibited obvious temporal and spatial variations. Stock density was higher in the sea area extending from the southern Hainan Island to eastern Guangdong Province than that in Beibu Gulf. The seasonal variation was characte-rized by the largest in summer but the smallest in winter. The temporal and spatial niche analysis showed that there was inconsistent in the order between temporal and spatial niche breadths for domi-nant species. L. edulis (1.32) and L. chinensis (3.90) occupied the largest temporal and spatial niche breadths, respectively. The smallest of temporal and spatial niche breadths were shown for S. esculenta (0.98) and L. duvaucelii (2.04), respectively. Though the temporal niche overlap was numerically larger than the spatial niche overlap, both of them had higher values in interspecies among L. edulis , L. chinensis , L. beka , and the lower overlap for the species pairs between L. duvaucelii and other species. The result of correlation analysis suggested that niche breadth exhibited a significant negative correlation with variation in abundance on both temporal and spatial scales. The ecological niche could reflect the tempo-spatial changes of species resource, which enriched the traditional methods of fishery communities.

To understand the characteristics and living conditions of shrimp population in the Zhongjieshan Islands Marine Protected Area (MPA), according to the trawl survey data of the area in January, April, July and October 2018, we analyzed the spatio-temporal niche of dominant shrimp species based on the indices of relative importance, Shannon index, Pianka formula and Pearson correlation coefficient. The results showed that 16 shrimp species from 10 families and 13 genera were collected and identified. Palaemon gravier, Solenocera crassicorni, Alpheus distinguendus, Parapenaeopsis hardwickii and Alpheus japonicus were dominant species, belonging to four fami-lies and four genera. The temporal niche breadth of the dominant species varied greatly, while their spatial niche breadth was stable. The temporal niche breadth was significantly correlated with temperature suitability. The spatio-temporal niche breadth value of A. japonicus, the small shrimps, was highest. The temporal niche overlap value between P. hardwickii and S. crassicornis was the largest, indicating that the time synchronization was high and the seasonal competition was severe. There was a significant spatial niche overlap in all dominant species, indicating that the dominant species of shrimp had the same spatial homology, with strong regional competition. The spatio-temporal niche overlap value between P. hardwickii and P. gravieri was the largest, indicating that they had high similarities in physical and biological environment selecting, spawning and migratory habits, and fierce inter-specific competition. Our results could provide reference for the application of spatio-temporal niche of marine organisms.

The results showed that there were 24 major fish species (IRI:100), the niche breadth values of which differed greatly and were positively correlated with IRI. The niche overlaps of fishes were extremely low in spring. The total amount of species pairs with niche overlap 0.6 (Q ik :0.6) were six in April and five in May, which represented 3.9% and 4.8% of the total pairs, respectively. Results from the redundancy analysis showed that the distribution of major fish species were mainly affected by temperature, salinity, water depth, and dissolved oxygen, which caused ecological differentiation of fish species.

The index of relative importance (IRI), niche breadth, and niche overlap (Q ik ) of nekton species were calculated using data collected from four fishery resource surveys from May 2016 to February 2017 in Yueqing Bay, Zhejiang Province. The results showed that there were 27 major nekton species (IRI＞100) with higher turnover rates across different seasons, while their niche breadth values differed greatly and showed significant positive correlation with IRI. The niche overlaps of nekton were generally low, with the highest overlap value in autumn and the lowest in spring. The total amount of species pairs with niche overlap over 0.6 (Q ik ＞0.6) were 14 in the autumn and five in the spring, which represented 15.4% and 7.6% of the total pairs, respectively. Results from the redundancy analysis suggested that the distribution of main nekton species were mainly affected by temperature, salinity and turbidity, which cause ecological differentiation of nekton species.

Base on the data from fishery resources survey carried out in northern coastal waters in Yuhuan in November 2016 (autumn) and April 2017 (spring), we examined the niche and interspecific associations of major nekton by the methods of index of relative importance (IRI), niche breadth, niche overlap, the variance ratio (VR), X 2 -test, association coefficient (AC), Jaccard index (JI), point correlation coefficient (Φ) and Spearman rank correlation index. The ecological niche breadth of Portunus trituberculatus was the largest, with the absolute competitive advantage. The niche breadths of the important economic species Coilia nasus and Octopus variabilis were the smallest, which was at a weak competitive position. The niche overlap of the major nekton species in this area was uneven, possibly caused by the diversity of local environments. Overall interspecific associations indicated that insignificant negative correlation existed among major nekton species. All results of the X 2 -test, association coefficient (AC) and Jaccard index (JI) were consistent with that of overall interspecific associations, which indicated the independent trend among species. The correlation coefficients (Φ) and the Spearman rank correlation index revealed that the positive coupling pairs were more than the negative ones. It was due to the positive association among the other 14 species, caused by the spatial exclusion from large captured individuals of Muraenesox cinereus. According to the Spearman rank correlation and cluster analysis, 15 species could be divided into five ecological groups. The species within one ecological group had similar ecologically adaptable requirements of habitat, while the species from different ecological groups had different living habits and different ecological requirements.

To understand the usages of available resource by dominant plants, their niches and the mechanisms of inter-specific competition and co-existence in the water level fluctuation zone, we studied the spatial distributions and niche characteristics of existing dominant herbaceous species at a typical water-level-fluctuation site of the Three Gorges Reservoir Area, Zigui. The results showed that there were 39 herb species in total, which belonged to 18 families and 32 genera. Gramineae, Compositae, Polygonaceae and Euphorbiaceae were the dominant families. Cynodon dactylon, Setaria viridis, Bidentis tripartitae and Digitaria chrysoblephara were the dominant species, with high importance value and niche breadth. In addition, at 145-155 m, 155-165 m and 165-175 m altitude section, the three major species, expressing the highest ecological niche breadth, which were in order of C. dactylon ＞ Polygonum lapathifolium ＞ S. viridis, S. viridis ＞ D. chrysoblephara ＞ C. dactylon, and S. viridis ＞ B. tripartitae ＞ P. orientale, respectively. The niche overlap of the species between the different altitudes zone was relatively high. The species which had a broad niche could co-exist with those occupying narrow niche. The niche overlap could not be determined by niche breadth lonely. Furthermore, after seven times of water level fluctuations, most of the species were annual herbs, and the degree of niche differentiation was low in the area. Due to scarce resources and unstable habitats, the inter-specific competition was strong, and the vegetation was at the primary successional stage.

Based on the seasonal bottom trawl surveys in the Minjiang River Estuary in 2015, the breadth and overlap of ecological niche of major fish species were analyzed. Those fish species were identified based on the index of relative importance (IRI). A total of 137 species belonging to 37 families and 16 orders were collected. Fifteen major fish species were determined by the IRI, including six dominant species Polydactylus sextarius, Harpadon nehereus, Pennahia argentata, Secutor ruconius, Cynoglossus abbreviates, Coilia mystus, and nine important species Collichthys lucidus, Amblychaeturichthys hexanema, Upeneus japonicas, Lagocephalus spadiceus, Pampus argenteus, Larimichthys crocea, Thryssa kammalensis, Takifugu oblongus, Lepturacanthus savala. Seven species whose spatio-temporal niche breadth was higher than 1 in a declining order were C. abbreviates, C. lucidus, S. ruconius, A. hexanema, T. kammalensis, C. mystus, H. nehereus. The ecological niche of major fish species in the Minjiang River Estuary showed obvious seasonal dynamics. The percentage of species pairs with spatio-temporal niche overlap at the meaningful level was as high as 81.9%. Six species pairs reached significant ecological niche overlap, indicating that major fish species had similar distribution at the spatial and temporal scales and the existence of resource utilization competition. The species pairs of U. japonicus-L. savalawas had the highest spatio-temporal niche overlap value, whereas U. japonicus-C. lucidus had the lowest niche overlap value. The spatio-temporal niche overlap of major fish species in the Minjiang River Estuary had substantial seasonal variation.

Background: Identifying and understanding the mechanisms that shape barriers to dispersal and resulting biogeographic boundaries has been a longstanding, yet challenging, goal in ecology, evolution and biogeography. Characterized by stable, adjacent ranges, without any intervening physical barriers, and limited, if any, range overlap in a narrow contact zone, parapatric species are an interesting system for studying biogeographic boundaries. The geographic ranges of two parapatric frog species, Feirana quadranus and F. taihangnica, meet in a contact zone within the Qinling Mountains, an important watershed for East Asia. To identify possible ecological determinants of the parapatric range boundaries for two closely related frog species, we quantified the extent of their niche differentiation in both geographical and environmental space combining ecological niche models with an ordination technique. We tested two alternative null hypotheses (sharp environmental gradients versus a ribbon of unsuitable habitat dividing two highly suitable regions) for biogeographic boundaries, against the null expectation that environmental variation across a given boundary is no greater than expected by chance., Results: We found that the niches of these two parapatric species are more similar than expected by chance, but not equivalent. No sharp environmental gradient was found, while a ribbon of unsuitable habitat did act as a barrier for F. quadranus, but not for F. taihangnica., Conclusions: Integrating our findings with historical biogeographic information, our results suggest that at a contact zone, environmental tolerance restricted F. quadranus from dispersing further north, while interspecific competition most likely prevented the southward expansion of F. taihangnica. This study highlights the importance of both climate and competition in exploring ecological explanations for parapatric range boundaries between ecologically similar frog species, in particular under the effects of changing climate.
