Heavy metal(loid)s are widely regarded as important environmental pollutants and have attracted extensive attention. In addition to such areas with frequent human activities as cities and industrial areas, the heavy metal(loid) pollution in remote areas lacking long-term monitoring data also deserves attention. In this study, Chinese pine (Pinus tabuliformis) in Jiuzhaigou World Natural Heritage was sampled to analyze concentration of Pb, Zn, Cu, As, Cd, Co, Cr, and Ni and to reconstruct pollution history. Source analysis and evaluation of the potential ecological risk of heavy metal(loid)s were also performed. Results showed that Jiuzhaigou has been polluted by heavy metal(loid)s at a relatively high level and concentrations were the highest at the location with intensive human activities (Nuorilang). Tree growth was inhibited by increased heavy metal(loid) concentration and this situation was more pronounced at high concentrations. The increased heavy metal(loid) concentrations were attributed to human activities such as forest logging, infrastructure construction, and tourism development. Heavy metal(loid) pollution reached a very high level of ecological harm at Nuorilang and a high level of ecological harm in Shuzheng and Heye villages. Overall, even at low concentrations, we demonstrated that Chinese pine can be used not only as a bioindicator for heavy metal(loid) pollution but also to infer pollution history over a relative long-term period and to enhance our understanding of the biogeochemical cycle of heavy metal(loid)s in forest ecosystems. Rapid industrialization has led to a dramatic increase in air pollution. In China, the factors driving the abundance and composition of smog, particularly fine particulate matter, remain poorly understood, and short-term air pollution data are available from few air quality monitoring networks. Using laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), chemical elements (Mg, Al, Si, S, K, Ca, Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Sr, Tl, Pb, Bi) were analyzed in Quercus mongolica Fisch. ex Ledeb. tree rings from Harbin, China, in latewood at 5-year resolution over the period 1965–2020. The temporal trend of some elements was influenced by physiological factors, by environmental factors such as pollution, or influenced by both. Mg, K, Zn, Cu, Ni, Pb, As, Sr and Tl showed changes in pollution levels over time. The signal of K, Zn, Ni, Cu and Pb in trees from Harbin statistically did not differ from those at the control site after the 2000s. Our analysis confirmed the success of the undertaken emission reduction measures, which lead to an improvement in China's urban air quality after 2010. However, As increased from 2000 to 2020 in Harbin which is consistent with rising As concentrations in China. Our study proved that dendrochemistry is a reliable tool to monitor the long-term history of pollution and to contribute to extending instrumental records of pollution back in time. The correlation between forest decline and calcium (Ca) depletion under long-term acid deposition remains elusive in China due to the high level of Ca deposition. We compared two species ( Abies fabri and Rhododendron calophytum) for their growth pattern and base elements concentration in both polluted (Mt. Emei) and unpolluted (Mt. Gongga) sites in Sichuan, southwestern China. A. fabri grown at Mt. Emei had poorer crown condition, slower radial growth rate, and lower seedling density under long-term acid deposition, which correlated closely with the reduced Ca concentration in foliage and tree-ring, in comparison with those at Mt. Gongga. In contrast, R. calophytum showed a stable Ca level and thus displayed normal growth between the two sites. The differential capability of these two species to acclimate to poor Ca environment is one of the keys to understanding the long-term ecological effect of changing atmospheric acid and Ca deposition in the subalpine forest in southwestern China. Abstract: In order to detect the response of trees to environmental pollution in Shenyang during the last century, tree rings of two 100+ year old Chinese pine (Pinus tabulaeformis Carr.) were analyzed for nine trace element concentrations (K, Ca, Mg, Mn, Cu, Zn, Al, Pb and Cd) and compared to local environmental change. The concentrations of Cu, Zn and Al had significant (p <0.01) increasing trends after 1940s and correlated significantly (p <0.01), with increasing production of nonferrous metal from local industrial processing. Concentrations of nutrient element (K, Ca and Mg) showed significant (p <0.01) increasing trend from heartwood to sapwood with declines in the last three decades. Significant correlation between climatic factors and element concentration in tree rings were also found, in which the temperature (November to May) and relative humidity in April and May showed significant positive correlation with Ca, Zn and Cu (p <0.05) as well as Al (p <0.01) concentrations in tree rings. April rainfall showed significant positive correlation with K and Zn (p <0.05) as well as Al (p <0.01) concentration in tree rings. The results suggest that tree rings from Chinese pine in Shenyang are sensitive to environmental change and have the potential to be used as a biomonitor for the environmental pollution. To assess the suitability of dendrochemistry as an indicator of soil acidification, soil chemistry and tree ring information of Abies fabri were measured at two distinct sites (severe acid deposition site-Emei Mountain and clean site-Gongga Mountain) of the subalpine forest ecosystems of western Sichuan, southwest China. The actual soil acidity (pH) was significantly correlated with some of the recent xylem cation (Ca, Mg, Mn, Al, Sr and Ba) concentrations and their molar ratios. Xylem Ca/Mg and Ca/Mn of A. fabri were ultimately selected to reconstruct the historical changes of soil pH in Emei Mountain and Gongga Mountain, respectively. The validity of those rebuild was also verified to a certain extent. We conclude that xylem cation molar ratios of A. fabri were superior to the single cation concentrations in soil acidity rebuild at the study sites due to normalizing for concentration fluctuations. Geochemistry of soils encapsulated by urban development and dendrochemistry were evaluated to reconstruct heavy-metal accumulation trends in an area of rapid economic development in China. The urban-covered soil spans a time period of 56 years from 1950 to 2006, and the tree cores cover the period from 1977 to 2006. Results from the six heavy-metal elements (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) analyzed in this study indicate that heavy-metal concentrations increase significantly in urban-covered soils dating from 1980, which is corroborated by data from corresponding tree cores. The accumulation rates of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn (1980–2006) were estimated at 0.91, 0.84, 1.42, 1.39, 1.34 and 1.86% per year, respectively. These high rates of accumulation suggest that anthropogenic sources resulting from rapid economic development led to the magnitude and rates of heavy-metal accumulation. Although reconstruction of heavy-metal accumulation trends using the urban-covered soils (substitutes space for time) introduces some uncertainty when compared with long-term experiments, this study demonstrates that urban-covered soils can provide a vehicle by which historical rates of heavy-metal accumulation can be approximated. In this study, the distributions of thallium (Tl), and other potential toxic elements, such as Cd, Co, Cu, Pb, Sr, As, Cr, Ni, Zn, and Mn in needles, tree rings and soils of pine trees in one of the largest pyrite mining areas in the world, i.e., Yunfu, China were investigated. The results showed that pseudo-total Tl concentration of the tree rings ranged from 0.41 to 2.03 mg/kg (average: 1.12 mg/kg) during the year of 1998 to 2011. This indicates an overall obvious enrichment of Tl. Further investigation of element level variations in the pine needles showed a negative correlation between Tl content and the distance from the mining area. The results of Principal Component Analysis additionally demonstrated that Tl in the tree rings was most likely derived from the pine needles. Notably, Tl contents in the tree rings exhibited generally similar distribution pattern to the annual production intensity of Yunfu pyrite mining activities.
