During attempts to prevent and control the COVID-19 pandemic in China, higher education programs shifted their traditional educational models to online models. This paper aimed to explore how Chinese universities organized online teaching and learning during the pandemic. It investigated the factors affecting the implementation of online teaching and provided policy recommendations for improving the quality of education in the post-pandemic period. The primary data for this study came from in-depth interviews with nine students and five teaching and administrative staff at eight major universities in mainland China. Literature was obtained in both English and Chinese from January 2020 to September 2021. Peer-reviewed journals, policy reports, and university documents regarding online education in Chinese universities were reviewed, and their challenges and countermeasures were investigated. The paper found that the implementation of online education was affected by various sources, including technologies, teachers' teaching skills, network information literacy, and students' learning motivations and self-directed learning skills. Based on the insiders' views, the paper suggested that to promote the quality of online education in the post-COVID-19 pandemic, higher education institutes and programs could develop their infrastructure construction, improve teachers' quality of teaching, and focus on students' learning motivations.

International student mobility is a complex phenomenon influenced by numerous factors. This study examines the prospect of China as a destination country for international students in the post-COVID-19 era. With qualitative data from 30 frontline international educators (support staff in international student recruitment and services) from 30 Chinese universities, this study has determined a set of "pull" factors that serve to attract international students to study in China and a set of "repel" factors that discourage students from going. On the basis of both the "pull" and "repel" factors identified, the participants anticipate important challenges for China's international enrollment in the short term, but stay optimistic about the long-term prospect. The "pull and repel" factors analysis is found to be a useful approach to examining the attractiveness of a host country to international students in a focused manner.

In the face of the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the hybrid teaching model has garnered significant attention for its combination of the depth of traditional education with the convenience of distance learning. Focusing on the domain of computer programming language instruction, this study innovatively designs a hybrid teaching strategy aimed at fully exploiting the flexibility of its teaching design and the variety of pedagogical approaches. The strategy integrates face-to-face teaching with online autonomous learning, incorporating project-based teaching methodologies and immediate feedback mechanisms to facilitate active student engagement and deep learning. Through a year-long practice in a C++ programming course, encompassing 68 students, the study empirically validates the effectiveness of the hybrid teaching approach. It not only demonstrates remarkable educational outcomes, enhancing the quality of programming instruction and student satisfaction with their learning experience, but also employs Bayesian analysis to delve into the relationship between learning trajectories and students' sense of self-efficacy. By focusing on key indicators during the learning process, such as the timeliness and quality of online learning, laboratory work, and project assignments, the study then utilizes Bayesian models to directly assess the impact of these learning behavior metrics on students' perceived self-efficacy. The findings reveal that students with outstanding academic achievements exhibit higher levels of self-efficacy, confirming that academic performance can reasonably reflect teaching effectiveness and provide a quantifiable basis for assessing individual learning progress. Consequently, this research not only contributes a novel strategy to computer programming education practice but also offers a valuable reference for the application of hybrid teaching models in other disciplines. Furthermore, it promotes in-depth contemplation on post-pandemic innovations in teaching modes and issues of educational equity, laying a solid foundation for constructing a more adaptive and inclusive future education system.

This study applies the hermeneutical phenomenological approach, guided by Critical Race Theory, to explicate a nuanced understanding of the way Chinese international students' racial identity shapes the challenges that they faced during the pandemic and their experience of academic institutions' support during this time. The current study highlights the pervasive anti-Asian racism that directly and indirectly contributed to Chinese international students' negative experiences studying in Canada during the pandemic. The findings also highlight the lack of support from academic institutions, despite the rising anti-Asian racism faced by this group of students. Furthermore, this study calls attention to the consideration of race in developing support programs for racialized international students. Recommendations for universities to better support international students (Chinese or otherwise) are developed.

In the current climate of global international education, overseas student integration and difficulties in adjusting into the academic life of the host country are often posited as personal failures. However, the categorization of international students is premised on them not being active subjects in the curriculum and the ways in which they can contribute to the internationalization of higher education. The current study addresses this negative characterization through a selective qualitative methodology, observing and interviewing 24 Chinese international students at an Australian university. Conducted during the COVID pandemic period, this study offers new insights into how the shift to online learning exacerbated the failure of the teaching, learning, and curriculum models that predominate in Australian universities. We conclude that as the pandemic subsides, deeper conversations are necessary over the continued prevalence of the deficit model while considering international students' agency in their learning practices.

Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, cases of discrimination and hate crimes against minority populations including international students have soared in the U.S. This study explores the relationship between international students' perceived discrimination and their self-reported overall health and the role of social support and positive emotions in such relationship. In total, 203 international students studying at two U.S. universities participated in an online survey. The results indicated that: (1) when international students perceive higher levels of discrimination, they experience lower levels of positive emotions and have lower levels of perceived social support; and (2) positive emotions were significantly associated with both psychological distress and physical health. Perceived social support was only significantly associated with physical health not psychological distress. We also provided meaningful implications for higher educational institutions that strive to enhance international students' overall health.

The study explored how the quality of Internet access influenced students' online learning experiences during the pandemic-imposed large-scale adoption of online education. Drawing upon digital inequality research, we analyzed data collected from 894 higher education international students in China. We found that both access devices and Internet stability exerted significant impacts on international students' satisfaction with and performance of synchronous online learning (SOL). The path model further revealed that the underlying mechanisms through which the two dimensions of access inequality affected learning outcomes were different. While the effects of access devices on learning satisfaction and course performance were only mediated by adaptability to online pedagogy, Internet stability affected the two outcome variables via both interaction and adaptability. The study highlights the implications of these findings in the context of online education.

The Ministry of Education Research Center for Online Education conducted a national survey of university administrators of learning and teaching. The survey results showed that: (a) the universities in eastern China had developed and introduced more massive open online courses (MOOCs) than those in the central and western regions; (b) of the various measures for blended learning, the universities tended to focus on supporting hardware development before providing training and incentive measures to teachers; and (c) the universities had widely used hybrid learning approaches. In relation to hybrid learning, Tsinghua University explored infrastructure upgrades, teacher training, and the optimal use of the rain classroom and its clone class, and launched the global hybrid classroom and global open courses. In the future, it will be necessary to further promote education equity in line with national policies and provide and perfect incentives to improve the quality of blended learning and expand hybrid learning while improving interaction through technology.

We examined the results of a large-scale national survey of online secondary education in China. The online survey of 33,194 high school students and 5,667 teachers has provided comprehensive and representative data regarding the quality of online education and its implementation during the pandemic. Questionnaire surveys administered to students and teachers in different grades and comparative analysis of different cohorts revealed group heterogeneity of the online learning effect. The findings have elucidated the emergency teaching situation in China during the pandemic, yielding targeted suggestions for school education following the resumption of classes.

This article casts light on informal caregiving, an essential aspect of the international postgraduate researcher (PGR) experience, but which is often invisible in literature and discourses on international education. Drawing from qualitative semi-structured interviews with international PGRs in a British university, it highlights their dual role as care recipients and lesser known caregivers across transnational and local spaces. It gives insights into the forms and dynamics of care that they give to and receive from family, friends and others, uncovering the emotional and affective aspects of undertaking a postgraduate research degree overseas which impact on their mental wellbeing. The findings have implications for the improvement of university support for international PGRs which has relevance for the wider international student community.

The global imaginary contributes to the perpetuation of neo-colonial and neoliberal mentalities, which reinforce the political, cultural, and social dominance over international students. Through an exploration guided by interrelated theories of agency and transnational social fields, this study employs a narrative inquiry methodology with a constructivist research approach to comprehend and investigate the agency of international graduate students of Color amidst transnational mobility during the COVID-19 pandemic within a four-year public research institution in the United States. The research findings demonstrate that specific contexts and spaces shape the agency of international graduate students and (trans)form their present and future. This article reveals four distinct forms of agency: agency as negotiation in uncertainties, agency as resistance to forms of (neo)racism, agency for personal growth and (trans)formation, and agency within transnational futures.

Objective: This study examined children's representations of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) as well as their pandemic experiences against the backdrop of the world having transitioned to normalcy. Design: Mixed-methods approach encompassing both qualitative and quantitative analysis. Setting: Two middle schools in Hefei city in mid-eastern China. Method: Data were collected using a qualitative task which elicited children's drawings, commentaries, answers to questions related to their pandemic experiences, followed by small-group interviews. Content analysis and emergent coding techniques were employed to analyse the data, the extracted themes of which were then quantified to reveal their incidence and distribution. Results: Analysis of the multimodal data set revealed children not only depicted viral morphology but also evoked emotions. The pandemic had brought about changes in children's lives, marked by a shift towards more academic activities, rest and relaxation and screen time. These changes also raised psychological, physical and social development concerns warranting mitigation. Multifaceted sources were identified as contributing to children's unhappiness, including restricted social interactions, educational challenges, emotional and psychological issues. Notably, children reported enhanced pre- to post-pandemic hygiene and sanitisation practices. Unsubstantiated beliefs relating to processes of recovery suggest the need for clearer communication in this regard. Conclusion: The study highlights the necessity for health education to support children in physical and psychological coping during a pandemic and build their resilience against future epidemics. Actively listening to children's account of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, and their pandemic experiences paves the way for making health education initiatives more relatable and attuned to their needs.

The ways in which learning environments are spatially conceived have undergone a significant transformation from "space" as "a realm without meaning" into "place" as "a meaningful location." In this context, the relevance of online interactions and the significance of online space and place in facilitating positive learning are worth exploration. Drawing on a nationwide survey involving 1010 international students at 41 Chinese HEIs in the COVID-19 pandemic, this research applied k-means cluster analyses which produced a typology of international students' perceived online educational environments and another typology of their online interpersonal interactions. The logistic regression results indicated the predictive power of both typologies on ability development. The discussion highlights the importance of considering spatial dimensions of international students' online learning. Promoting international students' online interactions and supporting inclusive, engaging learning experiences require both space for hosting and place enabling intercultural learning. The research holds implications for the sustainable development of online international education in the post-COVID-19 era.

This paper describes a scoping review of China's academic resource databases, relevant official websites, news reports and public accounts spanning a period from the end of 2019 to the end of 2022, to investigate the challenges in scientific integrity and ethical soundness of research conducted during and immediately after the COVID-19 pandemic in China. By conducting the scoping review with keywords related to the research questions in Chinese, relevant data were extracted and classified into four categories: challenges in research, challenges in ethics review, challenges in publishing academic work, and research ethics guidelines during and after the pandemic. The paper points out that problematic studies and findings increased with the escalation in medical research projects during the pandemic in China. The situation faced by researchers was more difficult than before the pandemic. The mode of informed consent, and ethics review and oversight systems also underwent changes. In addition, Traditional Chinese Medicine as an alternative medical treatment for COVID-19, attracted attention from the research community and became a topic of discussion. We conclude that the various challenges and concerns identified indicate a need for a proper and timely response system be formulated in preparation for possible future occurrences of new pandemics or other critical situations.

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to challenges in high-impact extra-curricular educational practice. Using cross-national, large-scale survey data, this study discusses the current state of participation of high-impact educational practices (HIPs) among Chinese and American undergraduates, changes in this participation over time, and the differences between undergraduates in the two countries in this regard, from 2018 to 2021. We find that participation in social practices was significantly greater than research-related and extended learning activities in both China and the U.S. The involvement of first-year undergraduates in the three typical HIP activities was lower than that of seniors, especially in doing research with faculty. American seniors participated more in service learning and study abroad than Chinese seniors. The proportion of senior students who had studied abroad was lower than the proportion of first-year students who planned to study overseas, particularly in China. COVID-19 led to a significant drop in participation in service learning and study abroad in China, and it also amplified the impact of institutional support on the participation of undergraduates in HIPs.

As one variant of the conventional flipped model, online flipped learning is increasingly implemented and it becomes important to explore how learners may be ready for it and how learner readiness may relate to motivation, attitude, and support. Informed by a multidimensional conceptualization of learner readiness and motivation and engagement, this study investigates the current situation of learner readiness, focusing on the moderating roles of learner attitude and environmental support in moderating the interrelationships between learner readiness and motivation and engagement in online flipped learning. Based on survey responses from 6,364 English learners across 11 Chinese universities, the results reveal that the students exhibited a generally high level of readiness for online flipped learning, though with significant demographic differences. The results also indicate that learner attitudes and environmental support moderated the impact of learner readiness upon learner motivation and engagement in online flipped learning. The findings call for attention to examine closely what dimensions of learner readiness could shape what aspects of motivation and engagement rather than simply assuming a linear causal relationship between readiness and motivation and engagement. A potential polarizing effect in online flipped learning is also highlighted, with implications discussed.

Research excellence is one of the key missions of universities and an important engine for socio-economic development. However, the outbreak of COVID-19 has affected academic research in many ways. This study examines the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the research performance of science and engineering faculty members in China's top research universities. It is found that the pandemic caused a decline in the numbers and quality of published articles, and the effects persisted over time. The negative effect of the pandemic on research excellence was more pronounced in the older faculty groups and departments of science. In addition, the pandemic has harmed international research collaborations among academics, which is likely to obstruct research excellence in the long run. In the end, this paper proposes several policy recommendations to reinvigorate universities' capacity for research innovation in the post-pandemic era.

Aims: To determine the associations between COVID-19 school closures and school readiness skills for Chinese kindergarteners. Design: We utilized the natural experimental condition created by local COVID-19 outbreaks in 2022 (Study 1) to compare school readiness skills of children whose kindergartens were closed for 5 months (Group 1) with children whose kindergartens stayed open (Group 2). We further compared the school readiness skills of one pre-COVID-19 cohort (Cohort 2019) with one COVID-19 cohort (Cohort 2021) from a fifth kindergarten (Study 2). Samples: For Study 1, Group 1 included 445 children and Group 2 included 584 children aged 4-6 years. For Study 2, Cohort 2019 included 156 children and Cohort 2021 included 228 children aged 3-6 years. Measures: For both studies, survey data on four school readiness skills were collected from parents. Additionally, Study 1 collected parental locus of control data from parents. Results: Controlling for covariates, Study 1 revealed that Group 1 and Group 2 did not differ in terms of language and emergent literacy or approaches to learning. However, Group 1 scored lower than Group 2 on health and well-being and arts and imagination. Study 2 revealed that Cohort 2021 scored higher than Cohort 2019 on language and emergent literacy but lower on the other three skills. Conclusions: The associations of COVID-19 school closures with Chinese children's school readiness skills were not uniform, with a positive relation with language and emergent literacy and negative associations with health and well-being, approaches to learning, as well as arts and imagination.

This longitudinal, quantitative study utilised 2019-2022 survey data from teachers at one Chinese internationalised high school in Jiangsu Province, China to examine teachers' immediate professional plans through the lens of teacher working conditions (TWCs). The relationship between teacher perceptions of working conditions and their immediate professional plans was further explored in light of teachers' status as international vs local, and the primary factor affecting teachers' willingness to stay at the school. Results from the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression analysis revealed that teachers planning to leave or move; international teachers; and teachers who indicated primary stay factors (the most important factors affecting teachers' willingness to continue teaching at the school) of instructional practices and support, school leadership, or time during the work day (adequate time during the school day to plan and collaborate) were associated with lower scores on the overall teacher working conditions perceptions index. These findings add to a growing body of research examining TWCs in international school contexts, specifically within Chinese internationalised schools. Given the transformational shifts these schools have recently experienced due to educational policy changes and COVID-19-related restrictions, school leaders may want to re-examine the organisational characteristics and supports at their schools with an eye toward retaining members of their ethnically heterogeneous teaching faculties.

In new paradigms, teachers' cognition and emotion must be considered dialectically shaped co-evolving processes. To address the issue, the study examined how language teachers' "perezhivaniya" (plural form of "perezhivanie," a concept from Sociocultural Theory that describes a unity between cognition and emotion) developed. During a semester (17 weeks), a study of 13 teachers of Japanese as a foreign language was conducted at a university in northeast China. Narrative inquiry was used to collect perezhivaniya excerpts from retrospective diaries, reflection diaries, and interviews. Q-methodology was also employed to group participants based on their cognitive and emotional changes toward technology-mediated language teaching (TMLT). In our study, teachers' negative perezhivaniya resulted from a lack of affordances for online and hybrid education in professional development. Teachers experienced many dramas (unit of analysis of perezhivaniya) as they adapted to TMLT. Conversely, teachers' positive perezhivaniya originated from teacher agency and developed through affordances offered by the sociocultural community. We also found teacher perezhivaniya changed in three staged patterns: resistance and demotivation (during large-scale offline teaching before the pandemic), obligation and adaptation (during large-scale online teaching during the pandemic), and inventiveness and motivation (during online and offline blended teaching after the pandemic). In conclusion, we identified teachers' perezhivaniya developed in a dynamic, historical, complex as well as multi-layered (with time-developmental, drama-historical, and SSD-social as indicators) pattern.

The shift to emergency remote teaching due to COVID-19 brought diverse psychological, emotional, and academic challenges for second language (L2) learners. Overcoming these challenges necessitated the utilization of grit, a personality trait signifying perseverance and passion to sustain academic progress. While grit and emotions have been explored in English language learning, their interaction remains underexplored in other languages. Despite Mandarin Chinese being widely learned globally, little previous work has been done to investigate learners' psychological experiences, the function of L2 grit, and the relationship between them in online learning from the perspective of positive psychology. This might lead to an incomplete understanding of this pattern across domains and contexts, thus impeding the development of this discipline. This study uses a structural equation model to analyze the relationship between L2 grit, anxiety, boredom, and enjoyment based on 204 valid responses from Chinese as a Second Language learners in mainland China. Results underscore the importance of one facet of L2 grit, perseverance of effort in online Chinese language learning, and highlight the domain-specific nature of emotions. It also suggests that educators need not be overly concerned about negative emotions in online education, as they can be overridden by positive emotions.

Previous research works demonstrate that risk perception (RP) of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) may result in experiencing negative emotions. The current research sought to further appraise of whether perceived social support alleviated the negative impact of RP of COVID-19 on subjective well-being (SWB) among university students. A sum of 594 university students in China aged 16 to 25 years old completed an online questionnaire during the COVID-19 outbreak on college campuses. The results found that uncontrollability negatively predicted positive affect and satisfaction with life; susceptibility, severity, and uncontrollability positively predicted negative affect in university students. Moreover, the relation between RP of COVID-19 and SWB was moderated by perceived social support. RP of COVID-19 predicted SWB in university students with high perceived social support but not amongst those with low perceived social support. Thus, the current research indicates that RP of COVID-19 may inhibit SWB and that high perceived social support may alleviate the negative role of RP of COVID-19 in SWB in university students.

The mental health problems caused by COVID-19 pandemic to every person and every group cannot be ignored, especially for college students, who are the main force of the society. Few studies explore the mechanism of action between college students' epidemic stress perception and life satisfaction in China. The study aims to understand the association between the epidemic stress perception of COVID-19 on life satisfaction, and examines the effect of coping flexibility and perceived social support in China. We investigated 597 college students by questionnaire and found college students' epidemic stress perception of COVID-19 was significantly negatively associated with life satisfaction; coping flexibility partially mediated the relationship between college students' epidemic stress perception of COVID-19 and their life satisfaction; perceived social support moderated role in the first half of the mediating pathway. Practical strategies to improve college students' life satisfaction were discussed in the paper.

To explore the influencing factors of college students' learning intention to online teaching videos during the pandemic, this study considered 696 college students from Huangshan University in China. The T-test and ANOVA were utilized to analyze gender, grade, and discipline on college students' learning intention, and the regression analysis was utilized to explore four aspects including performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, and facilitating conditions on college students' learning intention. The results indicate the following: first, using descriptive analysis, it is observed that college students did not exhibit a positive learning attitude toward online teaching videos during the pandemic. Second, the t test and one-way analysis of variance indicate that grades between freshmen and seniors significantly influence the learning intention of college students to online teaching videos, whereas genders and disciplines do not. Third, through regression analysis, it is observed that performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, and facilitating conditions significantly influence college students' learning intention to online teaching videos. This study stipulates the following research proposals: resource construction, the optimization of the online teaching environment, advanced technology and psychological counseling. It is expected that the findings will provide references for studies on online teaching resources and online learning.

The COVID-19 pandemic forced Chinese cross-border students in Hong Kong to participate in online homeschooling for three years while local students attended face-to-face schooling when the situation released. Previous studies have explored the learning challenges or educational inequity among students in online learning during the pandemic. Limited studies explored the educational inequality between local students and cross-border students. To fill this gap, this study explored the extent of educational inequity between Hong Kong local students and Chinese cross-border students. It further investigated the elements that lead to educational inequity between these two groups of students and the long-term consequences of prolonged purely online learning for Chinese cross-border students. This study compared self-regulated learning, perceived academic achievement, and learning challenges between 35 cross-border students and 32 local students in Hong Kong primary schools. According to the questionnaire and open-ended opinion surveys, the findings showed significant evidence of educational inequity between these two groups of students. Through six teachers' semi-structured interviews, the study analyzed students' learning experiences and synthesized the elements contributing to the issue of educational inequity. The study attributed this inequity to infrastructure elements and stakeholder-related elements. Prolonged purely online learning has resulted in negative and positive effects. This study offers practical implications for the government to implement feasible policies to reduce educational inequity in cross-border education and for stakeholders to conduct effective measures to support young learners in the post-COVID world. Lastly, this study discusses the limitations and recommendations for future research.

Chinese leaders in the tutoring industry encountered a crisis brought about by the Pandemic and the Double Reduction Policy. This exploratory multi-case study applied a conceptual framework that combines informal learning, strategic thinking, and experiential learning theory to explore how those leaders learned to think strategically in this crisis. Fifteen Chinese educational entrepreneurs were interviewed about their strategies and learning experiences related to the crisis. The findings suggest that the participants learned to think strategically from direct experiences, indirect experiences, and two thinking processes -- systems thinking and metaphorical thinking. This process was also influenced by Chinese cultural and historical wisdom. This study extends the current understanding of strategic thinking and learning practices among Chinese educational entrepreneurs. The research contributes to cultivating Chinese leaders' strategic thinking capabilities through informal learning during crises and offers practical value for leadership development in Chinese culture.

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced higher education to enter into a phase of blended learning that combines in-person and mandatory online learning. This new combination has presented great challenges in promoting academic wellbeing. Anchored by the conservation of resources theory, this study undertakes to explore the contributions of personal resources to academic wellbeing. A total of 1934 undergraduates at a public university in China voluntarily participated in a survey during the 2022 spring semester. They were asked to rate their psychological capital (PsyCap) in general. They were also asked to rate their learning burnout, learning engagement, and academic buoyancy on the course level (namely through a course with English as a foreign language). Partial least squares structural equation modelling was used for the data analysis. The results confirm a direct positive association between PsyCap and students' learning engagement. In particular, the contribution of PsyCap to learning engagement is partially mediated by learning burnout. The moderation estimation reports that the positive effect of PsyCap on learning engagement is stronger for Chinese undergraduates with a higher academic buoyancy and that the negative link of learning burnout with either PsyCap or learning engagement is stronger for Chinese undergraduates with a lower academic buoyancy. This research is the first one to explore the beneficial joint roles of PsyCap and academic buoyancy in promoting academic wellbeing. The findings of this research offer novel and subtle insights into why and how PsyCap and academic buoyancy has contributed to easing learning burnout and boosting learning engagement in blended learning environments during the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic has posed an unprecedented threat to the resilience of higher education worldwide, and university students had been thrust overnight into the emergency online learning. The end of COVID-19 pandemic is in sight, however, teachers and students have been forced to live with its disruptive effects indefinitely. Online teaching has been regarded as a panacea for maintaining the resilience of higher education during COVID-19 pandemic, it is significantly important to reflect on students' learning experiences and learning gains in online classes to improve future online teaching quality. Using a sample of 3514 participants located in the Chinese university context, this study aimed to investigate the determinants that affect students' learning gains in online learning anchored by self-determination theory. The results indicated a significant positive impact of teachers' emotional support in predicting students' learning gains in online classes, and also revealed the positive mediating effect of students' basic psychological needs satisfaction in bridging these two variables. Moreover, the findings highlighted the sophisticated role of students' achievement motivation interacting with teachers' emotional support to influence students' basic psychological needs satisfaction and learning gains. Implications regarding how to improve undergraduate students' learning gains in the future's online teaching were discussed.

Background: Existing research has linked individuals' flow experience - a positive affective and cognitive state of deep immersion and engagement in daily activities - and their well-being, particularly among university students. A growing number of longitudinal studies have further contributed to this understanding. However, limited attention has been given to exploring the dynamic interplay between these two variables and their underlying mechanisms (i.e., the mediator) of psychological resilience, specifically among university students in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Aims: To address this research gap, the present study draws on self-determination, flow and broaden-and-build theories. It examines the temporal dynamics and relationships between flow experience and well-being, and the mediating role of psychological resilience among Chinese university students. Sample: The study adopts a three-wave longitudinal design with a sample of 474 university students in Southwest China. Methods: Participants' flow experience, well-being and psychological resilience were measured across three time waves. Results: The findings of this study reveal that flow experience predicts well-being across the three waves and that psychological resilience mediates this prediction. This empirical evidence emphasizes the significance of both flow experience and psychological resilience in contributing to the well-being of university students over time amid COVID-19. Conclusions: These findings enrich our understanding of the factors contributing to well-being in educational settings and provide highly relevant and timely insights for developing strategies to foster well-being among university students, especially in the transition into the post-pandemic era; findings also offer valuable insights not only for researchers but also for educators and policymakers.

Using a transnational lens, this narrative study examines the online information literacies of six Chinese international graduate students in the United States during the COVID-19 pandemic. The data of the study were collected from phenomenological interviewing, weekly information-seeking dairies, and focus group discussions. This study illuminates Chinese international students' transnational information literacies in navigating the pandemic online information environment. These students stayed attuned with the pandemic conditions and relevant regulations in order to inform their important decision-making concerning health, safety, visa issues, and international travel. The study also highlights participants' cultural ways of information seeking and pragmatic approaches to information credibility assessment. Results from the study show the importance of understanding and empowering the information literacy of international students, especially during a global health emergency.

Higher vocational education is developing vigorously, it is urgent to improve the teaching effect. In order to verify whether an optimized blended learning mode has a significant positive impact on the learning presence, learning attitude and motivation of vocational students, 92 vocational students from two teaching classes were taken as research objects to conduct a 3-month quasi-experimental study. Covariate analysis and paired sample T-test were used to process the pre-and post-test data, and it was found that the influence on the sense of presence was F=4.335, P=0.000<0.001, and the influence on learning attitude and motivation was F=3.957, P=0.000<0.05, both of which reached a significant level. It is concluded that the optimized blended learning model and simple blended learning model have significant positive effects on the learning presence, learning attitude and motivation of vocational students. Vocational colleges should vigorously promote blended learning optimized according to different courses, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, which should become the new normal.

Since most schools and learners had no choice but to learn online during the pandemic, online learning became the mainstream learning mode rather than a substitute for traditional face-to-face learning. Given this enormous change in online learning, we conducted a systematic review of 191 of the most recent online learning studies published during the COVID-19 era. The systematic review results indicated that the themes regarding "courses and instructors" became popular during the pandemic, whereas most online learning research has focused on "learners" pre-COVID-19. Notably, the research topics "course and instructors" and "course technology" received more attention than prior to COVID-19. We found that "engagement" remained the most common research theme even after the pandemic. New research topics included parents, technology acceptance or adoption of online learning, and learners' and instructors' perceptions of online learning.

This paper investigates how the COVID-19 pandemic influenced student perceptions of online learning. This study examines how did the COVID-19 pandemic and the first-time transition to online mode of instruction influence Sino-Foreign University student perceptions of online learning in terms of (1) academic dishonesty, (2) privacy and confidentiality, (3) impact of social media on online learning (4) hybrid method and (5) institutional training. In order to judge students' perception of the transition to online learning, this study employed a cross-sectional survey-based design to gauge student perceptions of online learning before, during, and after the transition to remote instruction. This study finds that Sino-foreign University students are more conscious of academic integrity. Social media has a vital role in providing teaching resources, communicating with professors and classmates, and expediting collaboration during the pandemic. A blended learning model might be the best option for a post-COVID-19 environment for higher institutions.

Despite a vast body of scholarship delving into international students' educational experience during the COVID-19 pandemic, little is known about the doctoral group's perception from a sociomaterial perspective. Utilizing a group of Chinese international doctoral students while drawing on semi-structured interviews, the article unpacks what and how matter and human forces are entangled with one another as bricolages to shape a disrupted doctoral trajectory. It reveals that, within working and social spaces, human agency and non-human matter mediate, forge and produce a doctoral trajectory embedded within a complex lived experience of responding to shifting dynamics during the pandemic. It also shows how doctoral students aligned material and social assemblages to construct sociomaterial bricolages that facilitate a restoration of relative stability. The study contributes to the literature of international doctoral education with a nuanced disclosure of its navigation as a continual process of mobilization, negotiation and construction emerging from the performative flow of sociomaterial practices. It concludes that a doctoral trajectory represents network operations of experiencing and accounting for, not just what humans do with matter, but what matter does to human thinking and action.

The aim of this study was to examine teaching and technology status of physical education (PE) teachers under the ongoing influence of COVID-19. A total of 1,005 in-service PE teachers completed the Physical Education Teaching Efficacy Scale (PETES) and Educator Technology Self-Efficacy Survey (ETS-ES) electronically to measure current teaching efficacy and perceived technology self-efficacy. The findings revealed that the teachers' overall PE teaching efficacy level was high (8.08 ± 1.27) whereas, technological self-efficacy was at a moderate level (3.45 ± 0.44). Meanwhile, Efficacy for Using Technology significantly and positively predicted Technology Self-Efficacy (p < 0.001). In conclusion, Chinese in-service PE teachers in primary and secondary schools exhibited a high level of competence in PE teaching. However, their proficiency in utilizing technology for educational purposes needed improvement. While these educators possessed fundamental online teaching skills, they often encountered challenges in adapting to technology-enhanced teaching methods. Education and training institutions should improve their existing curriculum, and schools need to continue to develop and train in-service teachers.

The COVID-19 pandemic has popularized online learning as a mode of teaching and learning in universities, thereby exacerbating college students' stress levels in multiple ways. To enhance the quality of college student training, it is crucial to investigate the impact of perceived stress on their online self-directed learning. Using questionnaire data from 969 college students across China, this study performed an empirical analysis of the influence of perceived stress on their online self-directed learning, while also exploring the mediating role of phone dependence and the moderating role of self-management ability. The findings indicate that, firstly, perceived stress has a significant and positive effect on college students' online self-directed learning. Secondly, phone dependence masks the positive impact of perceived stress on students' self-directed learning, thereby weakening the effects of employment and learning stress on their online self-directed learning. Thirdly, self-management ability positively moderates the relationship between employment, social, interpersonal, and learning stress and college students' online self-directed learning. Fourthly, rural college students' online self-directed learning is more susceptible to employment, social, and interpersonal stress; vocational college students' self-directed learning is more influenced by employment, social, and learning stress; and students in the "Double First-Class" initiative universities are more likely to develop phone dependence. Therefore, this paper asserts that using stress reasonably, controlling stress appropriately, channeling stress properly, and enhancing self-management abilities can aid college students in learning autonomous online.

Background: The global introduction of complex measures directed at the containment of the COVID-19 spread has spurred a massive shift to distance learning among educational institutions. As far as such a learning mode is rather forced and, probably, only a few establishments faced no difficulties with it, the matter of assuring teaching activities' effectiveness in the practice of e-learning is relevant. Objectives: The main purpose of this article was to assess the efficiency of online-based tools and technologies in the context of distance education and develop a set of recommendations aimed at improving the effectiveness of online teaching. Methods: The research methodology was based on an empirical approach presupposing an exploratory questionnaire survey addressed to university students. As for the e-learning platform used, the focus was set on Microsoft Teams. Results and Conclusions: In general, the conducted investigation unveiled that the perception of the role of the instructor differs among Western and Chinese students in terms of willingness to accept psychological help and the feeling of safety during online lessons. Given this, it is reasonable to pay more attention to the psychological well-being of international students. The comprehensive analysis of survey outcomes allowed the development of a set of recommendations able to enhance the effectiveness of teaching in online settings. These encompass, for example, giving preference to small student group formations, setting greater emphasis on means increasing students' motivation to learn, involvement of instructors in the development and delivery of video lectures, the introduction of automated student assessment, use of multimedia information, and informing students about possible ways of interaction.

This article introduces the use of Internet-mediated joint construction (JC) to engage second language (L2) writers to participate in virtual classroom activities in an online teaching environment. Affected by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, schools and universities in the People's Republic of China were required to rapidly transit to remote teaching. The switch from the traditional classroom-based scenarios to the online environment was challenging for teachers. One of the extreme difficulties is to engage students in virtual-class activities. To address this issue, the authors designed an Internet-mediated JC teaching practice and implemented it on ClassIn, an online teaching platform for one semester. Analysis of students' after-class online surveys and interviews suggested that the Internet-mediated JC practice helped students to build a connected network and thus engaged them in actively interacting with both the teacher and peers in the online environment. Pedagogical implications are discussed to contribute to the teaching practice of L2 online writing instruction.

The COVID-19 pandemic prompts a number of university students to engage in online learning. China is one of the countries that has experienced a radical shift in this sense. Before the pandemic, the online mode of university study was not recognised as a legitimate educational experience in China; thus, a small number of Chinese students engaged in online learning. Subsequently, there was a relatively incomplete understanding of their online learning experiences. Given the exponential expansion of online learning in China since the pandemic, it would be a timely effort to synthesise knowledge on online Chinese students' experiences. For that purpose, the present article presents the results of a systematic literature review of 34 published journal articles concerning Chinese students' online learning journey. The results give a deep insight into Chinese distance higher education from students' perspectives and call for more studies on the implications of relevant policy and cultural dimensions on Chinese students' online learning experiences.

Based on Jef Verschueren's Adaptation Theory, Lakoff's definition and Prince et al.'s classification of hedges, this paper takes New York Times and China Daily from January 23rd to April 8th, 2020 as corpus sources, randomly selects 39 COVID-19 reports, and makes a contrastive study of hedges among them, aiming at exploring the similarities and differences in the use of hedges in COVID-19 reports selected from Chinese and American mainstream newspapers and further revealing their influencing factors.

The COVID-19 pandemic created unprecedented educational challenges. In order to ensure the continuity of formal education and to compensate for interruptions, emergency remote teaching practices were initiated worldwide. Like all other courses, foreign language teaching applied internet technologies as a teaching-learning media during the pandemic. Internet-based intercultural exchange between institutions of different cultural / national origin was already a widespread phenomenon before the pandemic. These intercultural activities have the potential of enhancing foreign language learning during emergency conditions such as pandemics as they provide opportunities for communication for real purposes in distance learning contexts. In order to gather in depth data, this study adopted a phenomenological design of a qualitative research model. The study explored the perceptions of Chinese and Turkish EFL learners based on their first-hand experience regarding an online intercultural exchange activity. When the qualitative data obtained from the individual interviews with volunteer participants were analyzed, it was concluded that the participants valued the activity and believed it contributed to their foreign language learning process and intercultural communicative competence. Findings were discussed in the scope of implementing mobile learning in the form of an intercultural exchange activity in online language teaching and learning process. Findings of this study could shed light on the applicability of online intercultural exchange activities for emergency remote foreign language teaching.

Online project-based learning (PjBL) is an increasingly popular teaching approach in higher education, especially in teacher education. Implementing online PjBL differs across subjects, bringing many benefits while posing challenges for educators and pre-service teachers. This systematic review aims to investigate the implementation, effectiveness and challenges of adopting PjBL in teacher education during the COVID-19 pandemic. The review provided a thorough overview of research on PjBL in teacher education during the COVID-19 pandemic, which was carried out using the systematic review methodology and Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Several relevant articles from five different databases (Google Scholar, Mendeley, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and Taylor & Francis Online) were collected using the keywords "project-based learning" and "teacher education" along with their synonyms. A final list of 26 included articles to be reviewed in this study is produced after the titles and abstracts screening and full texts evaluation using inclusion and exclusion criteria. This systematic review reveals that PjBL has been applied in teaching various subjects in teacher education with different types of projects and assessment methods. More importantly, integrating PjBL in teaching has been proven to positively impact the development of pre-service teachers' knowledge, professional skills and learning attitudes. In addition, applying PjBL poses certain challenges for educators due to the requirements on teachers' and students' knowledge and skills as well as equipment and technology facilities. On the other hand, the COVID-19 pandemic, if viewed positively, contributes to boosting educators' motivation and facilitating the implementation of online PjBL. The study findings can be used as a reference for future PjBL research and contribute to the literature on PjBL in the context of teacher education.

Internationalization at Home (IaH) has become a hot research topic although it is not a new concept appeared recently especially in China. The concept of IaH has experienced several changes since it was created in 1990s while the widely used one refers to the purposeful integration of international and intercultural dimensions into the formal and informal curriculum for all students within domestic learning environments. The recent development of the concept pays more attention on the establishment of international communities for each individual included. China changed its strict pandemic prevention and control policy in the end of 2022 and moved forward into the post-pandemic era. The practice of IaH has already appeared in China since the reform and opening-up policy carried out in 1978. However, the focus of Chinese policy and practice changed from international mobility to Internationalization at Home with a long-term development. The pandemic fastens this changing process. Due to the theoretical and practical background, IaH is recognized as the sustainable mode for Chinese higher education in the post-pandemic era which represents the future development path.

Due to the Zero-COVID policies implemented in China, students have accepted online education for curriculum learning for a considerable period of time. The objective of the current study was to determine the relationship between perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, gender, and the online learning effectiveness of emerging adult learners in Guangzhou, China, who were enrolled in a continuing education program. The research framework was created in accordance with the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). The convenient sampling and snowball sampling methods were used to collect 123 respondents for the study. Findings revealed that perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use were positively associated with online learning effectiveness, but gender was not. The study recommended that school administrators enhance students' perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use to improve the online learning effectiveness. The findings of this study will provide scholars with insights for improving the investment effectiveness of adult education programs. In addition, because online learning tends to be more adaptable and economical than traditional classes, the increase in learning effectiveness can provide schools with justifications to continue utilizing online education even after the pandemic.

This article used a questionnaire survey for the college students on learning and teaching in epidemic situation. The result of the study shows that there were existing superficial understanding on Online learning, insufficient theoretical guidance for online teaching innovation and teaching support services still lag behind expectations. Based on the data of the questionnaire, putting forward a mixed online and offline teaching model hoping that the mode can stimulate students' interest in active learning, promote the interaction between teachers and students, enrich relevant research theories and to a certain extent improve students' ability to think independently and solve practical problems.

The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has affected and continues to impact several areas of human lives and activities. With a particular focus on China, this reflection shares authors' observation on how COVID-19 may affect future trends of student mobility from and to the country. The reflection revealed that the impact of COVID-19 might not have a big negative impact on China. The declining interest of Chinese students to study abroad after COVID-19 will rather empower their home country. The reflection also revealed that the successful battle China has been leading and keeping the pandemic situation under control reassures international students to consider China as a protective destination for a future study plan. This study has relevant policy implications for understanding and informing international education actors of the change that may occur in student mobility trends and international higher education landscape due to COVID-19.
