This paper discusses the treatment of definitions and examples and contrasts four types of learner's dictionaries of English by way of analyzing EFL learners' mental representation and comprehension processes. It concludes by suggesting that, first, the bilingualized treatment of the definition facilitates EFL learners' mental construction of the connection between the word and the concept; and, second, the bilingual treatment of examples facilitates EFL learners' comprehension of contextual meaning shifts and the storage of chunks in the mental lexicon. The bilingualized dictionary possesses these two merits, and is more helpful and convenient for the EFL learner. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
