Purpose: Recent studies have shown that acupuncture may have great potential in the treatment of Bell's palsy. However, the bibliometric analysis of this field has not been summarized properly. Thus, the purpose of this study is to analyze the hotspot of acupuncture for Bell's Palsy. Methods: The core collection database of Web of Science was searched for relevant publications from 2000 to 2023, and countries, institutions, authors, keywords, and literature were analyzed and visualized by bibliometric softwareCiteSpace 5.1.R6, Vosviewer, BICOMB, and gCLUTO to explore the scientific achievements, research collaboration networks, research hot spots, and research trends. Results: 229 publications were included in this study. The most cited journal is Journal of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery; the most prolific country is China; the most prolific author is Li Ying, moreover, the collaboration among scholars is poor; Kyung Hee University is the most prolific institution studying acupuncture for Bell's Palsy. Reference burst detection indicates that traditional Chinese Medicine philosophy, the role of acupuncture in the prognosis of facial palsy, mechanism of acupuncture to improve facial nerve function, and the use of electroacupuncture are starting to become new research hotspots. Conclusion: The field of acupuncture for Bell's Palsy has developed rapidly in recent years, and new research trends are mainly: combination with traditional Chinese medicine, the role of acupuncture in the prognosis of facial palsy, mechanism of acupuncture to improve facial nerve function, and the use of electroacupuncture. However, research in this field is still dominated by case reports and clinical trials, and there is a lack of large-scale, multicenter clinical trials and animal experiments there are still many problems in institutional cooperation and experimental design, which requires relevant researchers to strengthen cooperation and improve experimental design. Objective: To compare the clinical effects of thick-needle therapy (TNT) and acupuncture therapy (AT) on patients with Bell's palsy (BP) at the recovery stage. Methods: A total of 146 eligible participants from 3 hospitals in China were randomized into the TNT group (73 cases) and the AT group (73 cases) using a central randomization. Both groups received Western medicine thrice a day for 4 weeks. Moreover, patients in the TNT group received subcutaneous insertion of a thick needle into Shendao (GV 11) acupoint, while patients in the AT group received AT at acupoints of Cuanzhu (BL 2), Yangbai (GB 14), Dicang (ST 4), Xiaguan (ST 7), Jiache (ST 6), Yingxiang (LI 20) and Hegu (LI 4), 4 times a week, for 4 weeks. Both groups received 2 follow-up visits, which were arranged at 1 month and 3 months after treatment, respectively. The primary outcome measure was House-Brackmann Facial Nerve Grading System (HBFNGS) grade. And the clinical recovery rates of both groups were evaluated according to the HBFNGS grades after treatment. The secondary outcome measures included the facial disability index (FDI) and electroneurogram (EnoG). The adverse events were observed and recorded in both groups. Results: Three cases withdrew from the trial, 2 in the TNT group and 1 in the AT group. There was no signifificant difference in the clinical recovery rates between the TNT and AT groups after 4-week treatment [40.85% (29/71) vs. 34.72% (25/72), P>0.05]. At the 2nd follow-up visit, more patients in the TNT group showed reduced HBFNGS grades than those in the AT group (P<0.01). No significant difference was observed between the two groups in FDI score, EnoG latency and maximum amplitude ratio at all time points (all P>0.05). Conclusion: The clinical effect of TNT was equivalent to that of AT in patients with BP at recovery stage, while the post-treatment effect of TNT was superior to that of AT. Objective: Bell's palsy and anxiety disorders share numerous risk factors (e.g., immune response, ischemia, and psychological stress). However, there have been no studies on the bidirectional temporal association between the two illnesses. In this study, we used the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) to test the bidirectional association between Bell's palsy and anxiety disorders. We hypothesized that patients with Bell's palsy would have an increased risk of subsequent anxiety disorders later in life and that, conversely, those with anxiety disorders would have an increased likelihood of developing Bell's palsy later in life.Methods: We conducted two retrospective cohort studies using Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD). Study 1 included 8070 patients diagnosed with anxiety disorders and 32,280 controls without anxiety disorders who were matched with sex, age, and enrollment date to analyze the following risk of Bell's palsy among both groups. Study 2 included 4980 patients with Bell's palsy and 19,920 controls without Bell's palsy who were matched with sex, age, and enrollment date to analyze the following risk of anxiety disorders among both groups. The patient records selected for the studies were dated between January 1, 2000, and December 31, 2004. All subjects were observed until their outcomes of interest, death or December 31, 2009.Results: After adjustment for age, sex, comorbidities, urbanization, and income, the hazard ratio (HR) for patients with anxiety disorders to contract Bell's palsy was 1.53 (95% CI, 1.21-1.94, P<.001), and the HR for patients with Bell's palsy to develop an anxiety disorder was 1.59 (95% CI, 1.23-2.06, P<.001).Conclusion: This study found a bidirectional temporal association between Bell's palsy and anxiety disorders. After one of these conditions develops, the morbidity rate for the other significantly increases. Additional studies are required to determine whether these two conditions share the same pathogenic mechanisms, and whether successfully treating one will reduce the morbidity rate for the other. The article presents a study concerning the outcomes of recurrent facial palsy in patients with Melkersson Rosenthal syndrome (MRS). A prospective investigation was carried out on patients with recurrent facial palsy in MRS, along with a visit to an outpatient department of otolaryngology. Results suggest recurrent facial palsy in MRS presents worse prognosis compared to recurrent Bell's palsy.

Background: Bell's palsy is an acute idiopathic paralysis of the facial nerve. The disease is caused by many viruses like Herpes simplex virus-1, Varicella zoster, Epstein-bar virus, Cytomegalovirus, Usutu virus, Human immunodeficiency virus, etc. Literature has reported few cases of COVID-19 patients with Bell's palsy as the only major neurological manifestation indicating the possible role of another virus in the etiopathogenesis of Bell's Palsy. This paper aims to evaluate the reported cases of COVID-19 positive patients, presented with Bell's palsy as the only major neurological manifestation from March 2020 to December 2020, and to investigate the association of SARS-CoV2 and Bell's palsy., Materials and Methods: A systematic review of the published literature was performed using an electronic search in PubMed/Medline, Science Direct, Web of Science, Embase, J- STAGE, Google Scholar, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CKNI) and Scopus databases, from March 2020 to Dec 2020 using keywords like 'COVID-19', 'SARS-CoV-2', 'Coronavirus', 'Bell's palsy', 'Facial nerve', 'First', 'Only',' Neurological', 'Manifestation'. Conclusions: A lateral hump anomaly of the pyramid segment of the facial nerve deserves special attention during otologic surgery. Coronary high-resolution CT (HRCT) reconstruction of temporal bone was highly valuable in preoperative detection of the anomaly. Objective: This study aimed to investigate lateral hump anomaly of the pyramid segment of the facial nerve in adult patients and assess the value of coronary HRCT reconstruction of the temporal bone in preoperative detection of the anomaly. Methods: We carried out a prospective study in 439 Han Chinese adults who underwent unilateral facial nerve decompression due to Bell's palsy in our department between April 2005 and October 2012, focusing on lateral hump anomaly of the pyramid segment of the facial nerve, detection sensitivity, and accuracy of coronary HRCT reconstruction of the temporal bone. Results: Lateral hump anomaly of the pyramid segment was observed in 21 cases (4.83%) undergoing surgery. The detection sensitivity and accuracy of coronary HRCT reconstruction were both 100%. Background: Hypophasis is one of the most frequently observed sequelae of patients with Bell's palsy, who have not recovered completely, creating a clinical difficulty for physicians. Acupuncture therapy has been widely used to treat Bell's palsy as a reasonable resolution for management of symptoms such as hypophasis. The number of acupuncture points (acu-points) is frequently selected in the approach of acupuncture therapy; however, whether these had high efficiency has not been proved. According to the literature review, Bi'nao was useful for treating eye and eye lipid diseases, which could be proved only by some successful cases. Thus, a randomized controlled trial was designed to evaluate the efficiency of the acu-point Bi'nao., Methods/design: Participants with hypophasis as the major symptom are selected among patients with Bell's palsy and randomly allocated into one of the three groups at a 1:1:1 allocation ratio. All participants receive conventional acupuncture therapy; however, those assigned to the real acupuncture group will be given added acupuncture therapy on the acu-point Bi'nao, while those assigned to the sham acupuncture group were given extra acupuncture therapy on the sham Bi'nao as a placebo. The efficacy of the acupuncture therapy on the acu-point Bi'nao for hypophasis will be evaluated by Eye Crack Width Measurement (ECWM) and Eyelid Strength Assessment (ESA) before and after therapy., Discussion: This is the first study assessing the safety and efficiency of Bi'nao in treating the hypophasis of patients with Bell's palsy that might support the application of this acupuncture therapy. However, evaluating hypophasis is challenging, and, thus, ECWM and ESA were applied to measure the eyelid movement., Trial Registration: Chinese Clinical Trials Registry, ChiCTR-INR-17012955 . Objective: The aim of this study was to compare genetic predilection and recurrence tendency between facial palsy in Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome (MRS) and Bell's palsy, Methods: We carried out an investigation on patients with facial palsy in MRS and those with Bell's palsy who visited the outpatient department in our hospital between February 2009 and February 2013. They were asked about familial history and whether it was the first episode, with the results recorded and compared., Results: There were 16 patients with facial palsy in MRS and 860 patients with Bell's palsy involved in the study. Familial history was positive in 5 of 16 patients (31.3%) with facial palsy in MRS and 56 of 860 patients (6.5%) with Bell's palsy (P < .01). Twelve of 16 cases (75%) with facial palsy in MRS and 88 of 860 cases (10.2%) with Bell's palsy had a history of facial palsy in the past (P < .01)., Conclusion: Compared to Bell's palsy, facial palsy in MRS has an obvious genetic predilection and recurrence tendency., (© The Author(s) 2014.)
