Pinus yunnanensis is an important component of China's economic development and forest ecosystems. The growth of P. yunnanensis seedlings experienced a slow growth phase, which led to a long seedling cultivation period. However, asexual reproduction can ensure the stable inheritance of the superior traits of the mother tree and also shorten the breeding cycle. The quantity and quality of branching significantly impact the cutting reproduction of P. yunnanensis, and a shaded environment affects lateral branching growth, development, and photosynthesis. Nonetheless, the physiological characteristics and the level of the transcriptome that underlie the growth of lateral branches of P. yunnanensis under shade conditions are still unclear. In our experiment, we subjected annual P. yunnanensis seedlings to varying shade intensities (0%, 25%, 50%, 75%) and studied the effects of shading on growth, physiological and biochemical changes, and gene expression in branching. Results from this study show that shading reduces biomass production by inhibiting the branching ability of P. yunnanensis seedlings. Due to the regulatory and protective roles of osmotically active substances against environmental stress, the contents of soluble sugars, soluble proteins, photosynthetic pigments, and enzyme activities exhibit varying responses to different shading treatments. Under shading treatment, the contents of phytohormones were altered. Additionally, genes associated with phytohormone signaling and photosynthetic pathways exhibited differential expression. This study established a theoretical foundation for shading regulation of P. yunnanensis lateral branch growth and provides scientific evidence for the management of cutting orchards. Asexual reproduction plays a fundamental role in the structure, dynamics and persistence of perennial grasslands. Thus, assessing how asexual reproductive traits of plant communities respond to drought may be key for understanding grassland resistance to drought and recovery following drought.Here, we quantified three asexual reproductive traits (i.e. above‐ground tiller abundance, below‐ground bud abundance and the ratio of tillers to buds) during a 4‐year severe drought and a 2‐year drought recovery period in four grasslands that spanned an aridity gradient in northern China. We also assessed the relationship between these traits and the resistance and recovery of above‐ground net primary productivity (ANPP).We found that drought had limited and largely inconsistent effects on asexual reproduction among drought and recovery years and grasslands overall. Drought increased tiller abundance in the first treatment year and reduced bud banks by the fourth treatment year across grasslands. However, neither of the three asexual reproductive traits were correlated with drought resistance of ANPP. Drought legacies differed among the four grasslands with positive, negative and no legacies evident for the three asexual reproductive traits, and no clear relationship with aridity. Bud banks and tiller to bud ratio decreased and increased, respectively, in the first recovery year, but not in the second recovery year. In contrast to drought resistance, community bud abundance was strongly related to recovery, such that communities with higher bud abundance had greater ANPP recovery following drought.Synthesis. These results suggest that asexual reproductive traits may be important drivers of ecosystem recovery after drought, but that variable responses of these asexual reproduction traits during drought complicates predictions of overall grassland responses. Background: Aphids are common crop pests. These insects reproduce by facultative parthenogenesis involving several rounds of clonal reproduction interspersed with an occasional sexual cycle. Furthermore, clonal aphids give birth to live young that are already pregnant. These qualities enable rapid population growth and have facilitated the colonisation of crops globally. In several cases, so-called "super clones" have come to dominate agricultural systems. However, the extent to which the sexual stage of the aphid life cycle has shaped global pest populations has remained unclear, as have the origins of successful lineages. Here, we used chromosome-scale genome assemblies to disentangle the evolution of two global pests of cereals—the English (Sitobion avenae) and Indian (Sitobion miscanthi) grain aphids. Results: Genome-wide divergence between S. avenae and S. miscanthi is low. Moreover, comparison of haplotype-resolved assemblies revealed that the S. miscanthi isolate used for genome sequencing is likely a hybrid, with one of its diploid genome copies closely related to S. avenae (~ 0.5% divergence) and the other substantially more divergent (> 1%). Population genomics analyses of UK and China grain aphids showed that S. avenae and S. miscanthi are part of a cryptic species complex with many highly differentiated lineages that predate the origins of agriculture. The complex consists of hybrid lineages that display a tangled history of hybridisation and genetic introgression. Conclusions: Our analyses reveal that hybridisation has substantially contributed to grain aphid diversity, and hence, to the evolutionary potential of this important pest species. Furthermore, we propose that aphids are particularly well placed to exploit hybridisation events via the rapid propagation of live-born "frozen hybrids" via asexual reproduction, increasing the likelihood of hybrid lineage formation. The four alien farmland weeds of genus Veronica (i.e. V. arvensis , V. didyma , V. hederifolia and V. persica) have successfully colonized in China, but caused different ecological consequences in the colonized habitats. However, the key biological traits conferring bioinvasion differences under different light conditions among the four alien species of Veronica remain unknown. A comprehensive contrastive analysis experiment was conducted to assess the contribution of the intensity of photosynthetic and sexual and asexual reproductive traits of the four alien Veronica weeds to their invasion level in both field trial and laboratory. The field survey showed that V. persica had the highest invasion level, followed by V. didyma , V. hederifolia and V. arvensis. Their invasiveness was mainly attributed to photosynthetic-related parameters (LMA) and asexual reproduction traits (the ratio of adventitious roots) out of all the 22 tested indexes. The photosynthetic-related and some asexual reproduction indexes from separate determinations under both sun and shade conditions showed that V. persica was able to adapt to strong illumination but was more tolerant of shade than the other species. This adaptive differentiation to illumination conferred different competitiveness over crops on the four alien Veronica weeds by allocating resources to the biomass of each organ in farmland. It may be concluded that the adaptability to illumination conditions and the asexual reproduction traits may endow their successful invasion and become different important farmland weeds. Leymus chinensis is a primary plant in the meadow steppe and typical steppe of China. With global warming and increasing grazing intensity, grassland degradation is being exacerbated. To better protect the L. chinensis grassland in this area and provide a theoretical basis for restoring it, this paper compared the germinable seed bank in the soil and the germination characteristics of L. chinensis (including initial germination time, duration of germination, germination termination time, germination dynamics, and germination index) in free-grazing and enclosed areas. At the same time, combining information about the density of L. chinensis on the ground and previous research results, a comprehensive analysis was conducted. The major results were: (1) there was no significant difference in the number of germinable seeds in the soil between the free-grazing area and the enclosed area, and these seeds were mainly concentrated in the 0–2 cm soil layer. (2) The free-grazing area resulted in a significant increase in the number of germinable L. chinensis seeds and advanced the initial germination time. (3) The number of soil germinated seeds and the number of L. chinensis germinated seeds decreased with the increase in soil depth. (4) Livestock grazing behaviours increased seed burial, thus improving the L. chinensis germination rate. At the same time, the L. chinensis seed bearing percentage and seed quality and the number of germinable L. chinensis seeds were significantly higher in the free-grazing area than in the enclosed area. Blackleg (Phoma) disease, caused by the ascomycete fungi Plenodomus biglobosus and P. lingam, threatens oilseed rape (OSR; Brassica napus) crops internationally. In many parts of the world, both species co-occur, but in China only P. biglobosus has so far been reported. Plenodomus biglobosus reproduces asexually (pycnidiospores), but also sexually (pseudothecia-yielding ascospores), via a heterothallic mating system requiring MAT1-1 and MAT1-2 genotypes. However, the roles of airborne ascospore inoculum in driving blackleg disease outbreaks in China are less well understood compared to elsewhere in the world. This is despite the very different agronomic cropping practices in parts of China, in which paddy rice and OSR are often grown in rotation; OSR stubble is often submerged under water for long periods potentially affecting pseudothecial development. Here, we indirectly investigate the potential role of sexual reproduction by developing new polymerase chain reaction (PCR) -based mating-type diagnostics for P. biglobosus and subsequently screening an international collection of 59 European and 157 Chinese isolates. Overall, in both Europe and China, P. biglobosus mating types did not deviate from a 1:1 ratio, such as is generally thought to occur under frequency-dependent selection in sexually reproducing pathogen populations. Both mating types were balanced in all the individual European countries tested (Austria, France, Poland, UK). Conversely, in China, mating types were only balanced in the eastern region; in the northern and southwestern regions there were skewed ratios, more typical of predominantly asexual reproduction, towards MAT1-1 and MAT1-2, respectively. Fusarium crown rot (FCR) of wheat, an important soil-borne disease, presents a worsening trend year by year, posing a significant threat to wheat production. Fusarium pseudograminearum cv. b was reported to be the dominant pathogen of FCR in China. Peroxisomes are single-membrane organelles in eukaryotes that are involved in many important biochemical metabolic processes, including fatty acid β-oxidation. PEX11 is important proteins in peroxisome proliferation, while less is known in the fungus F. pseudograminearum. The functions of FpPEX11a, FpPEX11b, and FpPEX11c in F. pseudograminearum were studied using reverse genetics, and the results showed that FpPEX11a and FpPEX11b are involved in the regulation of vegetative growth and asexual reproduction. After deleting FpPEX11a and FpPEX11b, cell wall integrity was impaired, cellular metabolism processes including active oxygen metabolism and fatty acid β-oxidation were significantly blocked, and the production ability of deoxynivalenol (DON) decreased. In addition, the deletion of genes of FpPEX11a and FpPEX11b revealed a strongly decreased expression level of peroxisome-proliferation-associated genes and DON-synthesis-related genes. However, deletion of FpPEX11c did not significantly affect these metabolic processes. Deletion of the three protein-coding genes resulted in reduced pathogenicity of F. pseudograminearum. In summary, FpPEX11a and FpPEX11b play crucial roles in the growth and development, asexual reproduction, pathogenicity, active oxygen accumulation, and fatty acid utilization in F. pseudograminearum. A new propaguliferous moss species, Pohlia tibetana X.R.Wang & X.M.Shao (Mielichhoferiaceae), from Tibet, southwest China, is described. The new species differs most saliently from other species of Pohlia by its combination of slender plants, loosely attached leaves and axillary solitary, and dark red and flowerlike gemmae. Inland saline marshes in northeastern China have unique soil characteristics and population distribution features. Hydrological change is a critical environmental factor causing wetland degradation and soil salinization in this region. The growth and reproductive responses of typical wetland plants to dry-wet alternations are essential for restoring inland saline marshes. A pot experiment was conducted to study the growth and reproductive responses of Phragmites australis populations to three hydrological treatments simulating drought degradation (drought), permanent inundation restoration (flooding), and seasonal inundation restoration (dry-wet). The species showed different growth and reproductive responses to the three treatments. After 120 d, the drought conditions induced a lower biomass, root length and root surface area of P. australis, but with higher root diameter, soluble sugar, and Na+ ion contents. Flooding and alternating dry-wet treatments induced the opposite responses. Alternating dry-wet treatments can be considered a better solution to effectively conserve water and meet the water needs of P. australis in the current growing season. The biomass under the alternating wet and dry treatment was the same as that under flooding, but the number of rhizome shoots was lower. The alternating dry-wet treatments was able to recover the growth of P. australis in the current season, but the potential for asexual reproduction of the species was insufficient. A warm-water doliolid species Dolioletta gegenbauri (Uljanin, 1884) was firstly recorded in Jiaozhou Bay (JZB) during the autumn of 2019–2020. As a warm-water species, its native habitat lies in the East China Sea Shelf, >1000 km south of JZB. Distribution, abundance, stage composition, size frequency distribution, and relationships with environmental factors were studied. Both asexual and sexual reproduction stages were observed. Gonozooids generally dominated the population, indicating an active population development status. Abundance was significantly correlated to temperature. Water temperature in the two consecutive years was among the highest levels during the recent 3–4 decades. The continuous warming trends both in the China coastal seas and JZB likely expanded the biogeographic range. The sub branches of a boundary current, the Kuroshio Current, especially the Yellow Sea Warm Current, may play a central role during the northward extension. Moreover, its feeding, growth, reproduction, and recruitment could also be benefited from the neritic food environment. Finally, when the temperature dropped below 15 °C in the early winter, it disappeared in JZB. The seasonal expansion of D. gegenbauri in JZB could be facilitated by current transportation, warming, and the neritic environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Phyllosticta citriasiana is the causal agent of citrus tan spot, an important pomelo disease in Asia. At present, there is little or no information on the epidemiology or population structure of P. citriasiana. By using simple sequence repeat markers, we analyzed 94 isolates from three pomelo production regions in southern and southeastern China. The analyses showed high genetic diversity in each of the three geographic populations. A STRUCTURE analysis revealed two genetic clusters among the 94 isolates; one geographic population was dominated by genotypes in one cluster, and the other two geographic populations were dominated by genotypes of the second cluster. P. citriasiana has a heterothallic mating system with two idiomorphs, MAT1-1 and MAT1-2. Analyses using mating type-specific primers revealed that both mating types were present in all three geographic populations, and in all three populations the mating type ratios were in equilibrium. Although the sexual stage of the fungus has not been discovered yet, analyses of allelic associations indicated evidence for sexual and asexual reproduction within and between populations. Abundant, well‐preserved specimens of spheroidal organic‐walled microfossil Yurtusia uniformis are reported from the basal Cambrian Yanjiahe Formation in the Changyang area of Hubei Province, South China. Thin and hollow processes extend between the double walls of the vesicle. The single to multiple internal bodies within the vesicle cavity are observed in the genus for the first time, representing reproductive structures (dividing daughter cells). A small circular perforation may occur on the vesicle wall to release the internal bodies. Morphological analyses of specimens preserved at various life stages reveal that processes gradually became longer as the vesicle grew in size. The internal bodies (daughter cells) underwent several successive divisions within the vesicle, which was accompanied by the simultaneous growth of both vesicle and processes. The regular growth of cells, formation and release of daughter cells, and the remarkable morphological similarity between extant algae and the studied microfossils suggest that Yurtusia uniformis is probably a green microalga that may be closely related to the Trebouxiophyceae or even Chlorellales (Chlorophyta). The growth and reproductive mode of individuals indicates that Y. uniformis is an actively growing vegetative cell of microalgae, rather than a metabolically inert cyst or resting spore. A life cycle involving vegetative growth and asexual reproduction is proposed for Y. uniformis on the basis of the life histories of modern chlorophytes. The multiple internal cells may represent autospores produced by a mature autosporangium during asexual reproduction, which subsequently developed into separate young vegetative cells after their release from the opened autosporangium. Background: Alternanthera philoxeroides (alligator weed) is a highly invasive alien plant that has continuously and successfully expanded from the tropical to the temperate regions of China via asexual reproduction. During this process, the continuous decrease in temperature has been a key limiting environmental factor. Results: In this study, we provide a comprehensive analysis of the cold tolerance of alligator weed via transcriptomics. The transcriptomic differences between the southernmost population and the northernmost population of China were compared at different time points of cold treatments. GO enrichment and KEGG pathway analyses showed that the alligator weed transcriptional response to cold stress is associated with genes encoding protein kinases, transcription factors, plant-pathogen interactions, plant hormone signal transduction and metabolic processes. Although members of the same gene family were often expressed in both populations, the levels of gene expression between them varied. Further ChIP experiments indicated that histone epigenetic modification changes at the candidate transcription factor gene loci are accompanied by differences in gene expression in response to cold, without variation in the coding sequences of these genes in these two populations. These results suggest that histone changes may contribute to the cold-responsive gene expression divergence between these two populations to provide the most beneficial response to chilling stimuli. Conclusion: We demonstrated that the major alterations in gene expression levels belonging to the main cold-resistance response processes may be responsible for the divergence in the cold resistance of these two populations. During this process, histone modifications in cold-responsive genes have the potential to drive the major alterations in cold adaption necessary for the northward expansion of alligator weed. In 2018, we conducted a cross-sectional study to investigate azole resistance in environmental Aspergillus fumigatus isolates obtained from different agricultural fields in China. Using 63 soil cores, we cultured for azole-resistant A. fumigatus and characterized isolates by their cyp51A gene type, short tandem repeat genotype, and mating type. Of 206 A. fumigatus isolates, 21 (10.2%) were azole resistant. Nineteen of 21 had mutations in their cyp51A gene (5 TR34/L98H, 8 TR34/L98H/S297T/F495I, 6 TR46/Y121F/T289A). Eighteen were cultured from soil samples acquired from strawberry fields, suggesting this soil type is a potential hotspot for azole resistance selection. Twenty resistant isolates were mating type MAT1-1, suggesting asexual sporulation contributed to their evolution. Prochloraz, difenoconazole, and tebuconazole were the most frequently detected fungicides in soil samples with azole-resistant fungus. Our study results suggest that managing the fungicides used in agriculture will help contain the problem of antifungal drug resistance in clinics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two unidentified foliicolous algal strains were isolated from living Ficus leaves in a tropical rainforest of China. Morphological, ultrastructural, and molecular phylogenetic investigations of these strains indicated that they differ from each other but cluster together and represent a new lineage of Trebouxiophyceae in the Choricystis/Botryococcus clade. These strains had similar morphologies with solitary, fusiform, and slightly asymmetrical vegetative cells, a basal stalk, and smooth cell walls. Cells contained a single parietal chloroplast with a pyrenoid surrounded by several starch sheaths and penetrating thylakoids. Asexual reproduction occurred in both strains through the splitting of the mother cell wall into two autospores. Phylogenetic analysis based on 18S, ITS and rbcL showed the two strains as a distinct branch in the Choricystis/Botryococcus clade of the Trebouxiophyceae. Understanding plant traits in response to physical stress has been an important issue in the study of coastal saltmarshes. For plants that reproduce both sexually and asexually, whether and how seedlings (sexual reproduction) and clonal ramets (asexual reproduction) may differentially respond to tidal inundation is still unclear. We investigated the growth and morphology of sexual and asexual propagules of an exotic saltmarsh plant (Spartina alterniflora) along a gradient of tidal submergence in the Yellow River Delta. Our results showed that the density, height and basal diameter of clonal ramets or sexual seedlings increased with tidal inundation. The patch amplification edge clonal ramets are superior than patch center plants. The differences response of plants to tidal inundation highlight the sensitivity of S. alterniflora to future tidal regime shifts and can help predict and evaluate the impacts of changes in inundation conditions due to sea level rise, coastal erosion and human activities. • The positively relationship between trait and density of plants and tidal height • Advantages in trait of offspring propagules versus maternal plants • There is inundation height adaptation threshold for sexual propagules. The moss Syntrichia caninervis is widely distributed in cool temperate and cold deserts where environmental pressures create a dependence on asexual reproduction (fragment reproduction). However, when compared to sporophyte‐producing mosses, there is a lack of evidence to support the capacity of drought‐tolerant mosses that predominantly fragment and produce protonema to disperse over long distances.We used 20 microsatellite loci to study genetic variation and structure in six populations (five natural populations and one population from a regeneration site) in three contrasting and widely separated regions of China.The genetic diversity and expected heterozygosity were lower in populations from the Tengger Desert than in populations from the other regions. Using PCoA, UPGMA and Structure analysis, the genetic grouping divided the three regions into three distinct groups. This may indicate that in regions where S. caninervis reproduces predominantly asexually, propagules are spread mainly by short‐distance dispersal. The genetic diversity of the population from the regeneration site in the Tengger Desert was slightly higher than that of the nearby, naturally occurring population, and included some input from the Pamir Plateau almost 2,300 km to the west, suggesting long‐distance dispersal of S. caninervis propagules across the region.Predominantly asexually reproducing populations of S. caninervis are mainly dependent on short‐distance dispersal. Long‐distance dispersal of S. caninervis propagules across the region is difficult. Establishment of populations with dominant asexual reproduction will eventually result in genetic differentiation. Strongyloidiasis is a much-neglected but sometimes fatal soil born helminthiasis. The causing agent, the small intestinal parasitic nematode Strongyloides stercoralis can reproduce sexually through the indirect/heterogonic life cycle, or asexually through the auto-infective or the direct/homogonic life cycles. Usually, among the progeny of the parasitic females both, parthenogenetic parasitic (females only) and sexual free-living (females and males) individuals, are present simultaneously. We isolated S. stercoralis from people living in a village with a high incidence of parasitic helminths, in particular liver flukes (Clonorchis sinensis) and hookworms, in the southern Chinese province Guangxi. We determined nuclear and mitochondrial DNA sequences of individual S. stercoralis isolated from this village and from close by hospitals and we compared these S. stercoralis among themselves and with selected published S. stercoralis from other geographic locations. For comparison, we also analyzed the hookworms present in the same location. We found that, compared to earlier studies of S. stercoralis populations in South East Asia, all S. stercoralis sampled in our study area were very closely related, suggesting a recent common source of infection for all patients. In contrast, the hookworms from the same location, while all belonging to the species Necator americanus, showed rather extensive genetic diversity even within host individuals. Different from earlier studies conducted in other geographic locations, almost all S. stercoralis in this study appeared heterozygous for different sequence variants of the 18S rDNA hypervariable regions (HVR) I and IV. In contrast to earlier investigations, except for three males, all S. stercoralis we isolated in this study were infective larvae, suggesting that the sampled population reproduces predominantly, if not exclusively through the clonal life cycles. Consistently, whole genome sequencing of individual worms revealed higher heterozygosity than reported earlier for likely sexual populations of S. stercoralis. Seagrass are under great stress in the tropical coast of Asia, where Enhalus acoroides is frequently the dominant species with a large food web. Here, we investigate the question of the fine‐scale genetic structure of this ecologically important foundation species, subject to severe anthropogenic disturbance in China. The genetic structure will illuminate potential mechanisms for population dynamics and sustainability, which are critical for preservation of biodiversity and for decision‐making in management and restoration. We evaluated the fine‐scale spatial genetic structure (SGS) and flowering output of E. acoroides, and indirectly estimated the relative importance of sexual versus asexual reproduction for population persistence using spatial autocorrelation analysis. Results reveal high clonal diversity for this species, as predicted from its high sexual reproduction output. The stronger Sp statistic at the ramet‐level compared with genet‐level indicates that clonality increases the SGS pattern for E. acoroides. Significant SGS at the genet‐level may be explained by the aggregated dispersal of seed/pollen cohorts. The estimated gene dispersal variance suggests that dispersal mediated by sexual reproduction is more important than clonal growth in this study area. The ongoing anthropogenic disturbance will negatively affect the mating pattern and the SGS patterns in the future due to massive death of shoots, and less frequency of sexual reproduction. In this paper, based on spatially explicit individual-based model and global sensitivity analysis, the relative importance of sexual and asexual reproduction for range expansion of Spartina alterniflora in different tidal zones during different invasion stages has been revealed. The results showed that: 1) sexual reproduction is thought to accelerate the range expansion in middle and high tidal zones; 2) seed dispersal and adult survival rate are the two most important for range expansion of S. alterniflora during most invasion stages in all tidal zones. However, in high tidal zone, the importance of seed dispersal distance is much less than in low and middle tidal zones, and that of sexual reproduction is also great, which cannot be ignored. In middle tidal zone, the importance of adult survival rate is less important than in high and low tidal zones, and is very close to asexual reproduction. Moreover, there are significant fluctuations among the importance of different parameters except seed dispersal distance, indicating strong interactions. 3) the importance of adult survival rate and asexual reproduction is much greater than seed dispersal distance during early invasion. Especially, their importance is much higher during early and middle invasion stages in high tidal zone. During early invasion stages, the interactions among different parameters are very strong. We conducted field sampling over 19 months to investigate eelgrass population reproduction status and ecological interactions in a large seagrass meadow in a eutrophic bay in northern China. The results showed asexual growth played an important role in the maintenance of existing meadows, and sexual reproduction played a critical role in the colonization of new areas. We conclude that adult eelgrass shoots do rule the fate of seedlings in the large seagrass meadow. Additionally, nutrient resources (N and P) at this location were found to meet eelgrass growth demand. The N/P ratios of seawater and seagrass indicated N limitation relative to P in the eutrophic bay based on the seagrass Redfield ratio (25–30). Nutrient uptake by seagrass might be an important factor in reducing the probability of a red tide in the study area. To assess the effect of Microcystis blooms on the crustacean zooplankton community, we conducted a large-scale monthly survey from 2008 to 2010 in Lake Taihu, China. During the sampling period, Microcystis was the dominant genus in the phytoplankton community (>79% of total biomass), while the crustacean zooplankton community was dominated by small-sized cladocerans (primarily Bosmina coregoni and Ceriodaphnia cornuta) and copepods. During the study, plankton exhibited significant spatial heterogeneity. The northern and western regions suffered from harmful Microcystis blooms and had higher cladoceran production. In the eastern region where Microcystis blooms seldom occurred, copepods accounted for a relatively larger proportion. Both stepwise multiple linear regression and redundancy analysis demonstrated that Microcystis was the most important factor controlling the spatial dynamics of zooplankton. Linear regression analysis revealed that both cladocera and copepoda were positively correlated with Microcystis and the response of cladocerans (R2= 0.73, P< 0.001) to Microcystis was stronger than that of copepods (R2= 0.44, P< 0.001). Our study suggested that cyanobacterial blooms may change competitive relations of small-sized cladocerans and copepoda, favoring small cladocerans (except larger genera). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
