Search

Cognisant of the wide range of cooperation between China and Africa and the existing strong Sino-African relationship, this article explores the international cooperation between Africa and China in the higher education domain, especially in the field of Open Distance Learning (ODL). The study employed data triangulation relying on both secondary and primary sources to address the main research questions. It sheds light on the development of ODL in Chinese Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) with a focus on professional development of university teachers. The article argues that ODL is crucial for emerging economies' sustainable development. Key factors such as political, technological and socio-cultural features play a crucial role in the development and effective implementation of ODL. By exploring the potential opportunities and identifying related challenges, this article contributes to an understanding of how mutually beneficial partnerships between African universities and Chinese HEIs can be developed within the wider framework of Sino-African relationship.

Computerized adaptive testing (CAT) has unsurpassable advantages over traditional testing. It has become the mainstream in large scale examinations in modern society. This paper gives a brief introduction to CAT including differences between traditional testing and CAT, the principles of CAT, psychometric theory and computer algorithms of CAT, the advantages and cautions of CAT. Background: Congenital heart defects (CHDs) are the most common birth defects. Assessment of the incidence, distribution, disease spectrum, and genetic deficits of fetal CHDs in China is urgently needed. Methods: A national echocardiography screening program for fetal CHDs was implemented in 92 prenatal screening–diagnostic centers in China. Findings: A total of 18,171 fetal CHD cases were identified from 2,452,249 pregnancies, resulting in 7·4/1,000 as the national incidence rate of fetal CHD. The incidences of fetal CHD in the six geographical regions, the southern, central, eastern, southwestern, northern, and northwestern, were 7·647 (CI: 7·383–7·915), 7·839 (CI: 7·680–8·000), 7·647 (CI: 7·383–7·915), 7·562 (CI: 7·225–7·907), 5·618 (CI: 5·337–5·906), and 4·716 (CI: 4·341–5·108), respectively, per 1,000 pregnancies. Overall, ventricular septal defect was the most common fetal CHD, accounting for 17.04% of screened pregnancies nationwide, and tetralogy of Fallot, the most common anomaly in the major defect of fetal CHD, was the second most common, accounting for 9.72%. A total of 76.24% cases of fetal CHD were found to be an isolated intracardiac single defect. The remaining 23.76% of cases of fetal CHD had multiple heart defects. Among all extracardiac malformations, the central nervous system (CNS) was the most common tissue with extracardiac anomalies associated with CHD, accounting for 22.89% of fetal CHD cases. Chromosomal karyotyping identified trisomy 18 as the most common chromosomal abnormality in fetal CHD. We also documented that CHD-containing syndromes could be identified with a comprehensive approach integrating prenatal ultrasound, MRI, pathological autopsy, and cytogenetics and molecular genetics. Conclusion: Implementation of prenatal echocardiography as a practically feasible platform to screen fetal CHD will reduce the financial and emotional burden of CHD, which may facilitate intrauterine and neonatal intervention of CHD. Objective: After a complete remission to treatment for hepatoblastoma, some children still have recurrence. We identified and explored the factors that influence recurrence after complete remission in a retrospective study. Methods: Of 197 children with hepatoblastoma, 140 (71.1%) achieved initial complete remission and were enrolled in factor analysis. Variables consisted of age, sex, PRE-Treatment EXTent of tumor (PRETEXT) stage, pathologic type, metastatic disease, serum alpha-fetoprotein level, vascular involvement, and surgical margin status. We employed univariate and multivariate analyses to assess the relationship between each factor and tumor recurrence. Results: Of 140 children who achieved initial complete remission, 42 (30%) had recurrent hepatoblastoma. The 5-year overall survival rates for the non-recurrence and recurrence group were 99.0% and 78.6%, respectively. The overall 1-year, 3-year, and 5-year recurrence-free survival (RFS) rates were 77.8%, 69.8%, and 69.8%, respectively. All recurrences occurred within 2 years from complete remission. The RFS rate was significantly higher in children younger than 3 years and in those with mixed pathological type, PRETEXT II and III, without metastatic disease, without vascular involvement, and microscopic negative margin than in that of children older than 3 years, with epithelial pathological type, PRETEXT IV, metastatic disease, vascular involvement, and macroscopic positive margin (P < 0.001, = 0.020, < 0.001, = 0.004, = 0.002, and < 0.001, respectively). The independent risk factors for recurrence after complete remission were age ≥3 years, PRETEXT IV, and metastatic disease (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Age, PRETEXT stage, metastatic disease, vascular involvement, pathologic type, and surgical margin status might be associated with recurrent hepatoblastoma after complete remission; meanwhile, age ≥3 years, PRETEXT IV, and metastatic disease are independent risk factors of recurrence. Summary: Introduction: Thiopurine S‐methyltransferase (TPTM) is a well known biomarker for thiopurine‐induced leucopenia, which has limited value in Asia. Instead, NUDT15 C415T is a promising predictor in Asia. Aims: To explore whether an optimised strategy based on NUDT15 C415T genotypes affects thiopurine‐induced leucopenia, as well as efficacy in Chinese patients with Crohn's disease. Methods: Patients with Crohn's disease and indications for thiopurines were included from two hospitals in China. They were randomly assigned to either the intervention or the control group. In the intervention group, those with genotype CC received a standard dose (control group), those with CT genotype received 50% of the standard dose, those with TT genotype received alternative drugs. The primary endpoint was thiopurine‐induced leucopenia (<3.5 × 109/L). Secondary outcomes were the incidence of other adverse events and the efficacy for maintaining steroid‐free remission at week 36. Results: The rate of thiopurine‐induced leucopenia was lower in the intervention group (n = 52) than in the control group (n = 66) (23.7% vs 32.4%, P = 0.049, RR = 0.73, 95% CI 0.53‐1.00). In CT subgroup, the incidence of leucopenia in the intervention group (n = 10) was significantly lower than in the control group (n = 28) (31.3% vs 65.1%, RR = 0.48, 95% CI 0.28‐0.84). Neither other adverse events nor treatment efficacy was significantly different between the two groups during follow‐up. Conclusions: Among Chinese patients with Crohn's disease, dose optimisation by NUDT15 C415T reduced the rate of thiopurine‐induced leucopenia, without significant influence on efficacy. Background: The association between anxiety and atrial fibrillation (AF) remains unclear. Moreover, this association has rarely been studied in Chinese individuals aged 60 years or older. This study investigated the association between anxiety and AF in a community-based case-control study of older adult residents in urban China.Methods: The cases and controls were from a community-based study conducted in the Jingansi community in Shanghai, China, between January 2010 and December 2012. A total of 3622 residents aged 60 years or older without severe vision, hearing, or speaking impairments were eligible to participate in the physical examinations and questionnaire survey. AF was assessed based on a previous physician's diagnosis, electrocardiogram, ambulatory electrocardiogram, or echocardiogram. Anxiety was evaluated using the Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (ZSAS). Using the AF group as a reference, the control group consisted of randomly selected age- and sex-matched individuals in a 1:5 ratio (case:control = 1:5). The association between anxiety and AF in the AF group and the multifactor-matched control group was explored using logistic regression.Results: In the AF and control groups, after adjusting for a history of coronary heart disease, valvular heart disease, hypertension, stroke, hyperlipidemia, and diabetes, as well as depression score, ZSAS scores (odds ratio 1.07; 95% confidence interval 1.02-1.12; p = 0.003), and anxiety symptoms (odds ratio 3.94; 95% confidence interval 1.06-14.70; p = 0.041) were associated with AF.Conclusions: Anxiety symptoms were associated with AF in a Chinese older population. Objective: We sought to compare the efficacy of the '512 Psychological Intervention Model' (that is, '512 PIM', a new psychological intervention) with debriefing on symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety and depression of Chinese military rescuers in relation to a control group that had no intervention. Method: We conducted a randomized controlled trial with 2,368 military rescuers 1 month after this event and then at follow-up 1, 2 and 4 months later to evaluate changes in symptoms of PTSD, anxiety and depression based on DSM-IV criteria, respectively. Results: Baseline analysis suggested no significant differences between the study groups. Severity of PTSD, anxiety and depression decreased over time in all three groups, with significant differences between the groups in symptoms of PTSD ( P < 0.01). Compared with the debriefing and control group, significant lower scores of PTSD and positive efficacy in improving symptoms of re-experiencing, avoidance and hyperarousal were found in the '512 PIM' group. Conclusion: '512 PIM' was an effective psychological intervention for military rescuers in reducing symptoms of PTSD, anxiety and depression after a crisis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim in this study was to investigate the characteristics and regularity of changes in mental state of the Chinese public during the period of the SARS outbreak in China (2003). The self-administered SARS Mentality Questionnaire was sent to 8775 people who came from 20 different professions in the cities of Guangzhou (23.5%), Beijing (37.8%) and Xi'an (38.7%). Of the participants 59.4% were male. Ages ranged from 17 to 76 years. After the pilot study, 33 items were included in the questionnaire. Of the people surveyed, 96.4% presented marked emotional change and 23.3% showed blind behavior; 76.7% took “access to relevant information” as effective measures against emergencies; 45.5% believed that SARS would cause more harm to human beings than cancer, AIDS and suicide resulting from depression. The change of emotion during the SARS epidemic was significantly different, as compared to normal circumstances. Risk prediction tools for colorectal cancer (CRC) have potential to improve the efficiency of population-based screening by facilitating risk-adapted strategies. However, such an applicable tool has yet to be established in the Chinese population. In this study, a risk score was created using data from the China Kadoorie Biobank (CKB), a nationwide cohort study of 409,854 eligible participants. Diagnostic performance of the risk score was evaluated in an independent CRC screening programme, which included 91,575 participants who accepted colonoscopy at designed hospitals in Zhejiang Province, China. Over a median follow-up of 11.1 years, 3136 CRC cases were documented in the CKB. A risk score was created based on nine questionnaire-derived variables, showing moderate discrimination for 10-year CRC risk (C-statistic = 0.68, 95 % CI: 0.67–0.69). In the CRC screening programme, the detection rates of CRC were 0.25 %, 0.82 %, and 1.93 % in low-risk (score <6), intermediate-risk (score: 6–19), and high-risk (score >19) groups, respectively. The newly developed score exhibited a C-statistic of 0.65 (95 % CI: 0.63–0.66), surpassing the widely adopted tools such as the Asia-Pacific Colorectal Screening (APCS), modified APCS, and Korean Colorectal Screening scores (all C-statistics = 0.60). In conclusion, we developed a novel risk prediction tool that is useful to identify individuals at high risk of CRC. A user-friendly online calculator was also constructed to encourage broader adoption of the tool. • We developed a new risk score that effectively stratified individuals based on their CRC risk. • The novel risk score outperformed commonly used models in identifying individuals at risk for CRC. • We made the tool easily accessible online, allowing the general population to actively engage in CRC prevention. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of a pay increase on job satisfaction among junior officers in the Chinese Army. A job satisfaction questionnaire was devised for the study and was used both before and after a raise in pay with junior military officers from one military region to detect changes in job satisfaction. Before the pay increase, job satisfaction was at a comparatively low level; after the pay raise, it improved significantly. This improvement also occurred in all facets of job satisfaction. Background: Impulsivity increases the risk for depression and anxiety. However, the granular pathways among them remain unknown. A network approach that moves from disorder-level analysis to symptom-level analysis can provide further understanding of psychopathological mechanisms. In this study, we examined the network structure of impulsivity and separate and comorbid symptoms of depression and anxiety., Methods: Regularized partial-correlation networks were estimated using cross-sectional data from 1047 Chinese participants aged 18-26 years (main dataset, mean age = 21.45 ± 2.01 years) and 325 Chinese participants aged 18-36 years (an independent replication dataset, mean age = 21.49 ± 3.73 years), including impulsivity-depression, impulsivity-anxiety, and impulsivity-depression-anxiety networks. The datasets were collected from 1 June 2023 to 4 August 2023 and from 27 April 2022 to 16 May 2022, respectively. Impulsivity, depression, and anxiety were assessed using Barratt Impulsiveness Scale Version 11, Patient Health Questionnaire-9, and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7, respectively. Bridge centrality was analyzed, and a network comparison test (NCT) was conducted to investigate the differences between the main dataset and replication dataset., Results: The motor impulsivity dimension was revealed to be closely connected with individual symptoms of depression and anxiety regardless of whether they were in separate disorder forms or comorbid forms. In all the networks, motor impulsivity was the most important bridge node. The NCT showed comparable network connectivity and network structure between the main and replication datasets., Limitations: The use of cross-sectional data limited the inferences about the direction of causality between variables., Conclusions: These findings elucidate the psychopathological mechanisms underlying how impulsivity functions within depression, anxiety, and comorbidity and support that motor impulsivity is an important risk factor across different mental disorders and is responsible for comorbidity. The Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) model is used to extract the text themes of newspaper news and construct the Chinese Economic Policy Uncertainty (EPU) Index. On this basis, based on the relevant data of Chinese A-share listed companies from 2008 to 2020, this paper empirically analyzes the impact of EPU on peer effects of firms R&D investment, and finds that EPU will aggravate the peer effects of firms R&D investment. During October 2022, enteric redmouth disease (ERM) affected Chinese sturgeons at a farm in Hubei, China, causing mass mortality. Affected fish exhibited characteristic red mouth and intestinal inflammation. Investigation led to isolation of a prominent bacterial strain, zhx1, from the internal organs and intestines of affected fish. Artificial infection experiments confirmed the role of zhx1 as the pathogen responsible for the deaths. The primary pathologic manifestations consisted of degeneration, necrosis, and inflammatory reactions, resulting in multiple organ dysfunction and death. Whole-genome sequencing of the bacteria identified zhx1 as Yersinia ruckeri, which possesses 135 drug-resistance genes and 443 virulence factor-related genes. Drug-susceptibility testing of zhx1 demonstrated high sensitivity to chloramphenicol and florfenicol but varying degrees of resistance to 18 other antimicrobial drugs. Identifying the pathogenic bacteria associated with ERM in Chinese sturgeons establishes a theoretical foundation for the effective prevention and control of this disease.

Background: This study investigated the potential contribution of biomass fuels exposure to the occurrence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in rural areas of western China., Methods: We analyzed data collected between October 2017 and October 2018 from a nested case-control study of individuals at least 40 years old in the general population in Mianyang City, Sichuan Province, China. Demographic information was collected using a custom-designed questionnaire, and lung function was measured using spirometry. We used multivariate logistic regression to explore the possible relationship between biomass fuels exposure and COPD, as well as between other potential risk factors and COPD. Bayes' theorem was used to estimate weights for different COPD risk factors., Results: COPD was newly diagnosed in 500 of the 11398 adults surveyed, corresponding to an incidence of 4.39%. Individuals who were exposed to biomass fuels were at a significantly greater risk of developing COPD than those not exposed (OR 2.58, 95% CI 2.23-3.05). In subgroup analysis, exposure to biomass fuels increased the risk of COPD in men by 1.71 times (95% CI 1.09-2.68) and in women by 2.88 times (95% CI 2.01-3.48), in never-smokers by 2.18 times. Bayesian weights for COPD risk factors were highest for poor kitchen ventilation (W=31.13%) and biomass fuels exposure (W=18.08%)., Conclusion: Our data indicate that rural Chinese who are exposed to biomass fuels during cooking or heating are at greater risk of developing COPD. Thiopurine dose optimization by thiopurine-S-methyltransferase (TPMT) or nudix hydrolase-15 (NUDT15) significantly reduced early leucopenia in Asia. However, it fails to avoid the late incidence (> 2 months). Although laboratory monitoring of 6-thioguanine nucleotides (6TGN) to optimize thiopurine dose was suggested in White patients the exact association between leucopenia and 6TGN was controversial in Asian patients. In the present study, we aimed to explore whether DNA-thioguanine nucleotides (DNA-TGs) in leukocytes, compared with 6TGN in erythrocytes, can be a better biomarker for late leucopenia. This was a prospective, observational study. Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) prescribed thiopurine from February 2019 to December 2019 were recruited. Thiopurine dose was optimized by NUDT15 C415T (rs116855232). DNA-TG and 6TGN levels were determined at the time of late leucopenia or 2 months after the stable dose was obtained. A total of 308 patients were included. Thiopurine induced late leucopenia (white blood cells < 3.5 × 10 9 /L) were observed in 43 patients (14.0%), who had significantly higher DNA-TG concentration than those without leucopenia (P = 4.1 × 10 -9 , 423.3 (~ 342.2 to 565.7) vs. 270.5 (~ 188.1 to 394.3) fmol/μg DNA). No difference in 6TGN concentrations between leucopenia and non-leucopenia was found. With a DNA-TG threshold of 340.1 fmol/μg DNA, 83.7% of leucopenia cases could be identified. Multivariate analysis showed that DNA-TG was an independent risk factor for late leucopenia. Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major public health problem and cause of mortality worldwide. However, COPD in the early stage is usually not recognized and diagnosed. It is necessary to establish a risk model to predict COPD development., Methods: A total of 441 COPD patients and 192 control subjects were recruited, and 101 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were determined using the MassArray assay. With 5 clinical features as well as SNPs, 6 predictive models were established and evaluated in the training set and test set by the confusion matrix AU-ROC, AU-PRC, sensitivity (recall), specificity, accuracy, F1 score, MCC, PPV (precision) and NPV. The selected features were ranked., Results: Nine SNPs were significantly associated with COPD. Among them, 6 SNPs (rs1007052, OR = 1.671, P = 0.010; rs2910164, OR = 1.416, P < 0.037; rs473892, OR = 1.473, P < 0.044; rs161976, OR = 1.594, P < 0.044; rs159497, OR = 1.445, P < 0.045; and rs9296092, OR = 1.832, P < 0.045) were risk factors for COPD, while 3 SNPs (rs8192288, OR = 0.593, P < 0.015; rs20541, OR = 0.669, P < 0.018; and rs12922394, OR = 0.651, P < 0.022) were protective factors for COPD development. In the training set, KNN, LR, SVM, DT and XGboost obtained AU-ROC values above 0.82 and AU-PRC values above 0.92. Among these models, XGboost obtained the highest AU-ROC (0.94), AU-PRC (0.97), accuracy (0.91), precision (0.95), F1 score (0.94), MCC (0.77) and specificity (0.85), while MLP obtained the highest sensitivity (recall) (0.99) and NPV (0.87). In the validation set, KNN, LR and XGboost obtained AU-ROC and AU-PRC values above 0.80 and 0.85, respectively. KNN had the highest precision (0.82), both KNN and LR obtained the same highest accuracy (0.81), and KNN and LR had the same highest F1 score (0.86). Both DT and MLP obtained sensitivity (recall) and NPV values above 0.94 and 0.84, respectively. In the feature importance analyses, we identified that AQCI, age, and BMI had the greatest impact on the predictive abilities of the models, while SNPs, sex and smoking were less important., Conclusions: The KNN, LR and XGboost models showed excellent overall predictive power, and the use of machine learning tools combining both clinical and SNP features was suitable for predicting the risk of COPD development.

There have been reports of hepatitis B outbreaks amongst diabetics in long-term care facilities, suggesting that risk of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is higher in this population. However, the magnitude of the risk and the incidence of HBV infection amongst the general diabetic population in China remains unknown. Data from a cohort study conducted in Mianyang City, Sichuan Province, China, were retrospectively analyzed in order to address this question. Demographic information was collected using a custom-designed questionnaire, and blood samples were tested for HBV using ELISA. We used multivariate logistic regression to explore the relationship between HBV infection and diabetes, while adjusting for age, sex, region, medical insurance, exposure history, and HBV vaccination. During 2013-2014, a total of 189766 adults were surveyed, of which 7382 were newly infected with HBV, corresponding to an incidence of 3.89%. In this study population, there were 4982 diabetic patients and 182710 non-diabetic individuals. Amongst those with diabetes, 265 (5.32%) were newly infected with HBV. In contrast, 7038 (3.85%) in the non-diabetic population were newly infected with HBV. The relative risk (RR) of HBV infection was 43% higher amongst those diagnosed with diabetes than amongst those not diagnosed (RR 1.43, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.26-1.63). These results suggest that the risk of HBV infection is higher amongst individuals diagnosed with diabetes mellitus in Mianyang City, Sichuan Province, China. Background: NUDT15 c.415C>T was a novel genetic marker confirmed in our center for thiopurine-induced leukopenia in Chinese inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). For validation, a large cohort study is needed. Meanwhile, the newly discovered NUDT15 coding variants (c.36&#95;37insGGAGTC and c.52 G>A) have not been studied in patients with IBD. We aimed to further confirm the influence of 3 NUDT15 variants (c.415C>T, c.36&#95;37insGGAGTC, and c.52G>A) on thiopurine-induced leukopenia in Chinese patients with IBD., Methods: Patients prescribed on thiopurines for at least 2 weeks were recruited from 4 tertiary hospitals. Clinical data were collected. NUDT15 genotypes were determined with polymerase chain reaction-RFLP and sequencing. The interactions between variants and leukopenia were analyzed., Results: A total of 732 patients were included, 177 (24.3%) of whom developed leukopenia. There were strong associations of NUDT15 c.415C>T, c.36&#95;37insGGAGTC, and c.52G>A with thiopurine-induced leukopenia (P = 1.81 × 10, P = 4.74 × 10 and P = 0.04, respectively), whereas there was no relevance for thiopurine S-methyltransferase genotypes (P = 0.25). The predictive sensitivity of NUDT15 c.415C>T was 49.2%, whereas it increased to 55.4% when combined analysis with c.36&#95;37insGGAGTC and c.52G>A. Notably, not only the homozygotes with NUDT15 c.415C>T but also the heterozygotes both carrying c.415C>T and c.52G>A developed early leukopenia. The median dosage for NUDT15 c.415C>T carriers was significantly lower than that for wild-type (P < 0.001)., Conclusions: We confirmed that NUDT15 c.415C>T, c.36&#95;37insGGAGTC, and c.52G>A variants were risk factors for thiopurine-induced leukopenia. Combined detection of the 3 variants could increase the predictive sensitivity of thiopurine-induced leukopenia and help to distinguish early leukopenia in heterozygote of c.415C>T in Chinese patients with IBD. Treatment monitoring by NUDT15 variants may be promising in individualized therapy.

Background: Studies of lasers or intense pulsed light (IPL) on facial port wine stain (PWS) were frequently reported. Neck PWS was seldom concerned., Objective: This paper was aimed to identify the efficacy and safety of IPL in the treatment of neck PWS in Chinese patients., Methods: Twenty-nine Chinese patients with neck PWS were enrolled to receive IPL therapy for five sessions at an interval of 4- to 5 weeks. The parameters were set as cut-off filters of 560 nm, single pulse with pulse width of 6 ms and fluence of 20-24 J/cm(2) or double pulse with pulse width of 4.5-5.0 ms, pulse delay of 15-30 ms, and fluence of 18-25 J/cm(2). The efficacy was evaluated using subjective assessment and non-invasive measurement. The adverse effects were recorded., Results: Over 60% patients achieved more than 50% improvement and over 50% participants were very satisfied or satisfied with the treatment. The participants less than 18 years old achieved better efficacy than the participants over 18 years old. The red or purple lesions gained better response to IPL treatment than the pink lesions. Adverse effects were limited., Conclusion: IPL is effective in neck PWS of Chinese population. Adverse effects were minimal and acceptable.

Trait anxiety, which includes stress and anxiety, affects mental health. However, early studies using the Implicit Association Test-Anxiety (IAT-Anxiety) did not consider the participants' trait anxiety. In the present study, the hypothesis that trait anxiety would influence the results of the IAT-Anxiety was tested. A total of 148 healthy undergraduates were assessed with the Profile of Mood State (POMS) test and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) to test explicit anxiety; they were then assessed for implicit anxiety with the IAT-Anxiety. High trait anxiety was positively correlated with negative mood; low trait anxiety tended to be associated with greater vigor and higher self-esteem. Significant main effects were found for both critical block and group among participants who received the IAT-Anxiety. Future studies of the IAT-Anxiety should consider trait anxiety as a within-subject factor for group matching to enhance the persuasiveness of the results.

Background: Fish consumption may protect against colorectal cancer, but results from observational studies are inconsistent; therefore, a systematic review with a meta-analysis was conducted., Methods: Relevant studies were identified by a search of MEDLINE and EMBASE databases to May 2011, with no restrictions. Reference lists from retrieved articles also were reviewed. Studies that reported odds ratio (OR) or relative risk estimates with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the association between the consumption of fish and the risk of colorectal, colon, or rectal cancer were included. Two authors independently extracted data and assessed study quality. The risk estimate (hazard ratio, relative risk, or OR) of the highest and lowest reported categories of fish intake were extracted from each study and analyzed using a random-effects model., Results: Twenty-two prospective cohort and 19 case-control studies on fish consumption and colorectal cancer risk met the inclusion criteria and were included in the meta-analysis. Our analysis found that fish consumption decreased the risk of colorectal cancer by 12% (summary OR, 0.88; 95% CI, 0.80-0.95). The pooled ORs of colorectal cancer for the highest versus lowest fish consumption in case-control studies and cohort studies were 0.83 (95% CI, 0.72-0.95) and 0.93 (95% CI, 0.86-1.01), respectively. There was heterogeneity among case-control studies (P<.001) but not among cohort studies. A significant inverse association was found between fish intake and rectal cancer (summary OR, 0.79; 95% CI, 0.65-0.97), and there was a modest trend seen between fish consumption and colon cancer (summary OR, 0.96; 95% CI, 0.81-1.14). This study had no publication bias., Conclusion: Our findings from this meta-analysis suggest that fish consumption is inversely associated with colorectal cancer., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier Inc. Objective: To explore the model of Oncomelania snail survey in inland areas, so as to reduce the burden of farmers as well as to improve the quality of snail survey., Methods: A database of environment in snail survey was established, and specialized personnel were organized at town level. The general survey combined with survey in turn was used., Results: After the improvement of the survey model, the personnel numbers and amounts of labor used, especially the cost afforded at village level decreased significantly, without any influence on the quality of snail survey., Conclusions: The improvement of snail survey model can enhance the efficiency and quality of survey, and can reduce the burden of farmers, but careful organization, strengthened management, and standardized operations are needed in the procedure.

Objective: To collect data and analyze the current status and prevalence changes of Crohn's disease (CD) in mainland China in recent decades., Methods: A computer-based literature search was previously performed by using 50-year (1950 to 2002) of records of CD from the Chinese Database of Biology and Medicine (CBM) (1979 to 2002) and a manual year-by-year search of the literature (1950 to 1978). Using similar method, descriptive epidemiological data from 2003 to 2007 were collected, analyzed and compared with previous research., Results: Four hundred and seventeen relevant papers during 2003 and 2007 were collected and 62 papers were eligible for inclusion. Within 62 papers, a total of 2149 cases with CD from 2003 to 2007 have been reported nationwide, comprising 1288 male and 861 female patients, with a 1.50:1 male predominance, and indicating 1.41 time of increment as compared with our previous result (ie, 1526 cases from 1950 - 2002). There were no obvious changes in incidence age (younger and middle age were main components) and sex ratio (number of male was still larger than that of female). The extrapolated CD incidence and prevalence rates were 1.21/100 000 person·year and 2.29/100 000, respectively, which were higher than that of year 1950 - 2002, 0.28/100 000 person·year and 1.38/100 000, respectively., Conclusions: The incidence and prevalence rates of CD have been increasing rapidly, but these rates are still lower than those in Western world.

Gas gangrene is an emergency condition, which usually develops after injuries or surgery. This study was designed to investigate clinical characteristics, appropriate therapy, and effective control of nosocomial cross-infection of gas gangrene in Wenchuan earthquake victims. Data on diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of confirmed, suspected, or highly suspected gas gangrene were collected. Sixty-seven (2.41%) cases of suspected gas gangrene were found, in which 32 cases were highly suspected of gas gangrene and 5 cases were confirmed by culture of Clostridium perfringens. Thereof, injury sites were mainly located on the limbs, and typical indications, including crepitation, severe localized pain, swelling, wound discoloration, dark red or black necrotic muscle, foul smell as well as different degrees of systemic toxic performance were common among them. After hospitalization, all patients were isolated and had surgery quickly to remove dead, damaged or infected tissue. The wounds were also exposed for drainage and washed or padded with 3% liquid hydrogen peroxide for disinfection before all diagnostic test results were available. Additionally, high doses of antibiotics (mainly penicillin) were given for the prevention of infection, and supportive therapy was applied for corresponding symptoms control. Among those cases, no fatality was reported. In summary, in post-disaster emergency relief, the diagnosis of gas gangrene should be primarily based on clinical manifestations; while patient isolation, wound debridement and disinfection, as well as antibiotics treatment, is the main measures for proper treatment and control of nosocomial infection for gas gangrene.

Objectives: To better understand the occurrence of Crohn's disease in mainland China and to give an updated overview of the current status of the disease., Methods: We previously performed a computer-based literature search using 50 years of records from the Chinese Database of Biology and Medicine (1979 to 2002), combined with a manual year-by-year search of the literature from 1950 to 1978. Using a similar method, descriptive epidemiological data of the last 5 years (2003 to September 2007) were collected, pooled with our previous data and re-analyzed., Results: In total, 3618 cases of Crohn's disease since 1950 have been reported from 29 provinces and cities in mainland China, comprising 2112 male and 1506 female patients, with a male predominance of 1.40:1. More than 75 percent of the patients were aged from 20 to 50 years old, with a mean age of 36.9 +/- 4.4 (1- 84) years. The extrapolated disease incidence and prevalence rates are 0.848/10(5) and 2.29/10(5) person/year, respectively., Conclusion: The incidence and prevalence rates of Crohn's disease have been increasing rapidly, and the disease is no longer uncommon in China, but these rates are still lower than those in developed countries and other Asian countries. An underestimation may occur because patients who were misdiagnosed or did not seek medical advice could not be included in the study. A future population-based survey is warranted.

Background and Objectives: Intense pulsed light (IPL) is regarded as the gold standard of nonablative photo-rejuvenation. Yet there is still a need to observe its efficacy and safety on dark skin using a split-face module., Study Design/materials and Methods: Twenty-four Chinese women with photoaging were enrolled in this study. Patients were randomized to receive four IPL treatments at 3- to 4-week intervals on one side of face, with the other side spared as control. Changes of photoaging were evaluated using a global evaluation, an overall self-assessment, a Mexameter and a Corneometer. Skin biopsies were taken after four sessions of treatment on one side of face. The melanocyte density and the contents of melanin, collagen fibers, and elastic fibers were stained and used to evaluate the improvement on dyschromia and other signs of photoaging., Results: The global scores of photoaging on treated side decreased significantly from 3.02 to 1.22, while it remained unchanged on the untreated side. Twenty-one of 24 patients (87.5%) rated their improvement as excellent or good. The difference on the values of melanin index and erythema index on treated side were significantly larger than those on untreated side after the 1st session, the 4th session and at 3-month follow-up (P<0.05). The melanin contents were significantly decreased and the collagen fibers were obviously increased only on treated side (P<0.05). Adverse effects of treated side were limited to mild pain and transient erythema., Conclusion: Using this split-face module, IPL treatment is proved both clinically and histologically to be effective in treating photoaging skin in Chinese population. Adverse effects were minimal and acceptable.

This his article reports the findings of a study conducted to investigate the personality types of Chinese dental school applicants. The Chinese version of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) (Form G) was used to assess the personality styles of 332 dental school applicants from the mainland of China. The results of the MBTI for Chinese dental school applicants were compared with a previous study of applicants from the U.K. A higher percentage of this group of Chinese applicants scored higher for Introversion (I) than Extroversion (E); both Chinese and English applicants preferred Judging (J) to Perceiving (P). The dominant personality types in Chinese applicants were ISTJ, ESTJ, and ISFP. The findings suggest that the personality types of Chinese dental students may be somewhat different from the personality profiles exhibited by dental students from other nations. The findings may be of value to individuals who desire to investigate personality type differences among dental students with different cultural backgrounds.

Each article was double-reviewed, and all descriptive epidemiological data were recorded, pooled and statistically analyzed., Results: In total, 1526 cases of Crohn's disease since 1950 have been reported by more than 50 hospitals from 22 provinces and cities in mainland China, comprising 884 male and 642 female patients, with a 1.38:1 male predominance. More than 70% of patients were aged 20 to 50 years old, with a mean age of 37.2 +/- 2.68 (ranging from 1 to 83) years. The extrapolated disease incidence and prevalence rates are 0.28/100,000 person years and 1.38/100,000 persons, respectively., Conclusions: The incidence and prevalence rates of Crohn's disease are still lower than those in Western and other Asian countries, but these rates have been increasing rapidly, and the disease is no longer uncommon.
