The regional climate model, RegCM3, is used to simulate the 2004 summer surface air temperature (SAT) and precipitation at different horizontal (i.e., 30, 60, and 90 km) and vertical resolutions (i.e., 14, 18, and 23 layers). Results showed that increasing resolution evidently changes simulated SATs with regional characteristics. For example, simulated SATs are apparently better produced when horizontal resolution increases from 60 to 30 km under the 23 layers. Meanwhile, the SATs over the entire area are more sensitive to vertical resolution than horizontal resolution. The subareas present higher sensitivities than the total area, with larger horizontal resolution effects than those of vertical resolution. For precipitation, increasing resolution shows higher impact compared to SAT, with higher sensitivity induced by vertical resolution than by horizontal resolution, especially in rainy South China. The best SAT/precipitation can be produced only when the horizontal and vertical resolutions are reasonably configured. This indicates that different resolutions lead to different atmospheric thermodynamic states. Because of the dry climate and low soil heat capacity in Northern China, resolution changes easily modify surface energy fluxes, hence the SAT; due to the rainy and humid climate in South China, resolution changes likely strongly influence grid-scale structure of clouds and therefore precipitation. Using a moisture tracking model with 32-year reanalysis data and station precipitation observations, we diagnosed the sources of moisture for summer (June 1–August 31) precipitation in mid-lower reaches of the Yangtze River Basin (YRB). Results indicate the dominant role of oceanic evaporation compared to terrestrial evapotranspiration, and the previously overlooked southern Indian Ocean, as a source region, is found to contribute more moisture than the well-known Arabian Sea or Bay of Bengal. Terrestrial evapotranspiration appears to be important for summer precipitation, especially in early June when moisture contribution is more than 50%. The terrestrial contribution then decreases and is generally less than 40% after late June. The Indian Ocean is the most important oceanic source before mid-July, with its largest contribution during the period of heavy precipitation, while the Pacific Ocean becomes the more important oceanic source after mid-July. To quantitatively analyze paths of moisture transport to YRB, we proposed the Trajectory Frequency Method. The most intense branch of water vapor transport to YRB stretches from the Arabian Sea through the Bay of Bengal, the Indochina Peninsula, the South China Sea, and South China. The other main transport branches are westerly moisture fluxes to the south of the Tibetan Plateau, cross-equatorial flows north of Australia, and separate branches located in the north and equatorial Pacific Ocean. Significant intraseasonal variability for these branches is presented. Additionally, the importance of the South China Sea for moisture transport to YRB, especially from the sea areas, is emphasized. Abstract: Climate prediction under impact of anthropological greenhouse-gas emission is impossible to validate, but it can be inferred from past climate and modeling. In East Asia, a general warm–wet period at late Marine Isotope Stage 3, ca. 30–40 ky BP has been identified based upon extensive geological records; this provides an arid/humid reference for possible future warming caused by human activities. Based upon syntheses of geological evidence and the AGCM+SSiB modeling, this paper presents climate simulations focused on 35 ky BP, using forcing of insolation, glaciation and land surface conditions for East Asia. Results of the simulation can be compared with geological records and show that (1) the climate patterns of 35 ky BP were warm–wet conditions in northern China, but with warm–dry conditions in southern China compared to today; (2) mean annual temperatures were higher in most mid-low latitude areas, mainly contributed to by increased winter temperatures, suggesting that insolation has generated significant climate effects through the coupling in atmospheric circulation with land surface patterns; (3) Quaternary ice sheets in the Northern Hemisphere played an important role in temperature decrease at the mid-high-latitudes, and also enhanced the south–north temperature gradients, which in turn, increased moisture transport from low to high latitudes and increased monsoonal precipitation over the Tibetan Plateau; and (4) Vegetation changes in East Asia resulted from an increased temperature in the low latitudes, extended rain-belt northwards into China, and an enlarged area of increased precipitation inland.
