This study evaluated 75 strains of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) isolated from traditional dairy products in western China for their probiotic properties. Among them, Limosilactobacillus fermentum WXZ 2-1, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum TXZ 2-35, Companilactobacillus crustorum QHS 9, and Companilactobacillus crustorum QHS 10 demonstrated potential probiotic characteristics. The antioxidant capacity of these 4 strains was assessed, revealing that L. fermentum WXZ 2-1 exhibited the highest antioxidant capacity. Furthermore, when cocultured with Streptococcus salivarius ssp. thermophilus and Lactobacillus delbrueckii ssp. bulgaricus , L. fermentum WXZ 2-1 demonstrated a synergistic effect in growth medium and goat milk. To explore its effect on goat milk fermentation, different amounts of L. fermentum WXZ 2-1 were added to goat milk, and its physicochemical properties, antioxidant activity, flavor substances, and metabolomics were analyzed. The study found that the incorporation of L. fermentum WXZ 2-1 in goat milk fermentation significantly improved the texture characteristics, antioxidant capacity, and flavor of fermented goat milk. These findings highlight the potential of L. fermentum WXZ 2-1 as a valuable probiotic strain for enhancing the functionality and desirability of fermented goat milk, contributing to the development of novel functional foods with improved health benefits and enhanced quality attributes. The bedrock weathered crust in front of the Altun Mountains in the Qaidam Basin, western China, is different from others because this is a salt‐lake basin, where saline water fluid infiltrates and is deposited in the overlying strata. A large amount of gypsum infills the bedrock weathered crust, and this has changed the pore structure. Using core observation, polarized light microscopy, electron probe, physical property analysis and field emission scanning electron microscopy experiments, the characteristics of the weathered bedrock have been studied. There are cracks and a small number of dissolved pores in the interior of the weathered crust. Matrix micropores are widely developed, especially the various matrix cracks formed by tectonics and weathering, as well as the stress characteristics of small dissolved pores, and physical properties such as porosity and permeability. Green credit policy is designed to address the global climate risk. However, few studies have investigated empirically whether green credit policy indeed reduces corporate carbon emission intensity. Based on firm‐level data in China and a difference‐in‐differences model, this study explores how corporate carbon emission intensity evolves following the green credit policy. We find that, on the whole, the green credit can effectively reduce corporate carbon emission intensity, while the dynamic negative effect tends to alleviate after 2017. Specifically, green credit reduces corporate carbon emission intensity mainly through lowering investment carbon intensity and enhancing environmental supervision. However, the signaling mechanism of green credit does not significantly alleviate corporate carbon emission intensity. The green credit has a stronger reduction effect on corporate carbon emission intensity with third‐party certification, non‐state‐owned ownership, and high financing constraint. We thereby suggest that innovations should be made to the standards and processes of green credit to ensure sustainability and stability. The Guangyuan Thousand-Buddha grotto is of great value in researching the spread of Buddhism in China. To explore a scientific deterioration degree evaluation method, the authors selected 11 grottos from the middle Tang Dynasty in the Guangyuan Thousand-Buddha grotto as survey objects; a traditional deterioration investigation was undertaken, and an analytic hierarchy process (AHP method) was applied to build a system to calculate the weight of 15 deterioration criteria and evaluate the deterioration degree of the grotto. The results showed that 15 deteriorations can be classified into two categories: stability deterioration and weathering deterioration. Each deterioration has its own weight on affecting the preservation condition of the grotto. In contrast to realistic conditions, the calculation results can quantitatively reflect the preservation condition of the grotto. The results offer a quantitative basis for determining the priority of grotto conservation and verifying the feasibility of the AHP method in helping conservators identify major deteriorations or judge conservation orders. Bacteriocins produced by lactic acid bacteria (LAB) consist of a wide range of antimicrobial proteins or peptides which can be used as bio-preservatives to control food-borne pathogens. In this study, bacteriocinogenic LAB strains were isolated from fermented milk in Inner Mongolia, China. These strains exhibited high antimicrobial activity and were identified as Lacticaseibacillus paracasei. The sensitivity of their antimicrobial activity to protease K implies the possible existence of bacteriocins within the culture. Selected L. paracasei strains were subjected to whole genome sequencing and the bacteriocin biosynthetic gene clusters were identified in-silico. To further verify the antimicrobial properties of the isolated strains in controlling food pathogens in model Cheddar-like cheese, they were used as adjunct starter cultures in cheese contaminated with Bacillus cereus and Listeria monocytogenes. The results showed that each of the five strains carries a minimum of three bacteriocins biosynthetic gene clusters. All L. paracasei strains exhibited the ability to inhibit B. cereus and L. monocytogenes and caused a significant log reduction of pathogens during cheese ripening. Additionally, the isolated strains improved cheese texture and flavor to varying degrees. The geographical locations of smart devices can help in providing authentication information between multimedia content providers and users in 5G networks. The IP geolocation methods can help in estimating the geographical location of these smart devices. The two key assumptions of existing IP geolocation methods are as follows: (1) the smallest relative delay comes from the nearest host; (2) the distance between hosts which share the closest common routers is smaller than others. However, the two assumptions are not always true in weakly connected networks, which may affect accuracy. We propose a novel street-level IP geolocation algorithm (Corr-SLG), which is based on the delay-distance correlation and multilayered common routers. The first key idea of Corr-SLG is to divide landmarks into different groups based on relative-delay-distance correlation. Different from previous methods, Corr-SLG geolocates the host based on the largest relative delay for the strongly negatively correlated groups. The second key idea is to introduce the landmarks which share multilayered common routers into the geolocation process, instead of only relying on the closest common routers. Besides, to increase the number of landmarks, a new street-level landmark collection method called WiFi landmark is also presented in this paper. There are more than 18,500 grotto statues in Anyue County, Sichuan Province, China. These grotto statues painted with diverse colors were first sculpted in the Sui Dynasty (581–618 AD) and play a significant role in the history of grotto art development in China. However, due to natural weathering and human factors, the grotto paintings are suffering from many problems, such as flaking and powdering. To study the composition, structure, and destructive factors at work in the paint layers, a set of effective detection methods were integrated, including Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy–energy dispersive spectroscopy, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, immunofluorescence microscopy, and others. The pigments, layer structures, binding materials, and elemental migrations of 22 polychrome samples from the Anyue grottoes are detected. The results show that the Anyue grottoes were painted with more than ten pigments. Casein, egg white, mammalian glue, and plant glue were also detected in samples as binding materials. The accumulation of sulfur and calcium on the surface of several samples was found, which was the main reason for the flaking of the pigments. The principle hydrocarbon source in West Qaidam Basin, China, is the Xiaganchaigou formation, which charges a series of Cenozoic large reservoirs. We identified a series of organic-rich intervals within a sequence of Oligocene-age Xiaganchaigou evaporites in southwest Qaidam. By analyzing 2D and 3D seismic tomography and gamma ray well logs, we defined the distribution and extent of these source rocks. We also characterized their composition with trace element analysis and carbon and oxygen isotope measurements. Our data demonstrated distinctive characteristics of these source rocks with high salinity, abundant organic material, high hydrocarbon generation efficiency, and low maturity, which are associated with relatively rapid and productive hydrocarbon generation. Using high-pressure and high temperature experiments to simulate pyrolysis in samples of the source rocks, we investigated what enabled these young salt-rich source rocks to generate such an abundance of hydrocarbons. Our results highlighted the key role of saline and radioactive minerals in catalyzing accelerated pyrolysis of hydrocarbons during diagenesis and catagenesis. Salt catalysis clearly played an important role in hydrocarbon generation within lower maturity formations and also significantly improved and redefined the source rocks distribution and the extent of probable reserves in the southwest Qaidam. Abstract With intensive management practices on highly cultivated urban vegetation resulting in the over-consumption of natural resources and urban green spaces losing ecological function, interest is growing in spontaneous plants. Our goal was to improve knowledge of the biodiversity and distribution patterns of spontaneous vegetation in urban parks, which may benefit sustainable and low-maintenance planting design in future green spaces. To disentangle these patterns, a field survey was carried out at both habitat (determined by position in the park) and microhabitat (determined by the planted plants) scales. A total of 102 spontaneous plant species were recorded, and most of them were herbaceous plants. The habitats located between road and building (R-B) and waterside (WS) showed maximum levels of diversity and evenness; the two microhabitats showing maximum levels of diversity and evenness were the waterside unplanted plot (WUP) and the flower bed (FB). Microhabitat affected spontaneous plants more significantly than did habitat. Furthermore, canopy density (CD) and intensity of disturbance (ID) were influencing factors at both scales, while community structure of planted plants (P-CS) was only influential at the habitat scale and slope gradient (SG) was influential at the microhabitat scale. Additionally, the impact of specific planted trees was not significant, but some associated species were notable. Species composition showed markedly different characteristics in different habitats and microhabitats. Understanding these patterns and influencing factors could provide helpful references for any future construction of sustainable urban vegetation with low-maintenance, high-biodiversity and local character. The integration of hydrogen energy into the maritime industry requires a comprehensive evaluation of the life cycle of hydrogen fuel, encompassing all stages from production to operational use in ships. This research aims to analyze the entire technology chain of marine hydrogen fuel. Six methods of hydrogen production, including steam methane reforming, coal gasification, coke oven gas, propane dehydrogenation, water electrolysis, and biomass gasification, are evaluated with regard to their energy consumption, environmental sustainability, and economic cost. The life cycle assessment is divided into two processes: hydrogen production and hydrogen fuel cell ship application. Calculations are based on a real-world case study of Dalian Port in China. A sensitivity analysis is also performed to assess the impact of various ship-specific conditions, such as speed, route distance, and transportation conditions, on the performance of hydrogen fuel-powered ships. The findings indicate that the current power cost structure does not necessarily make electrolytic hydrogen production the most environmentally responsible option. In the long-range route, the life cycle cost of water electrolysis is 2.49 × 10 6 U S D. Among the six methods, coke oven gas hydrogen supply method produces the highest carbon emissions. As the global shipping industry experiences rapid expansion, the imperative to address greenhouse gas emissions and environmental impact becomes increasingly paramount. This paper conducts a comprehensive examination of hydrogen fuel cell (FC) technology in ships, scrutinizing the role of international classification societies and exploring existing standards and regulations within the maritime industry, specifically centered around hydrogen energy. The study outlines a strategic developmental roadmap for a green shipping hydrogen energy system tailored for hydrogen FC-powered ships in China. Emphasizing the differences in hydrogen application between fuel cell vehicles and ships, the paper elucidates technical challenges unique to hydrogen FC-powered ships. Biogenic methane is a variety of metabolites generated by methane bacteria, consuming a simple-nutrition organic substrate under anaerobic conditions. Due to the shallow depth at which it is generally produced, biogenic methane is easily released into the atmosphere, becoming a significant contributor to the greenhouse effect. However, if suitable collection methods are employed, biogenic methane can be gathered and used as a clean and efficient energy source. The Qaidam Basin is a large saline lake basin in the Tibetan Plateau, which is rich in biogenetic gas. During the Quaternary period, the area's sedimentary center moved to the east of the Qaidam Basin. This resulted in the deposition of thick lacustrine sedimentary strata in the basin. Lacustrine mudstone is the primary source rock for biogenetic gas, and as a result, the gas is mostly found in the lacustrine strata of siltstone. In addition, evaporated lacustrine saline calcareous mudstone forms an effective covering layer for the gas. These lacustrine sedimentary strata provide both a favorable hydrocarbon accumulation environment and good preservation conditions for biogenic gas. As such, they could be converted into structural or lithologic gas reservoirs, through biogenic methane lateral migration with a suitable reservoir-cap configuration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We aimed to explore novel small metabolites that associated with hypertension risk in a population-based nested case-control study. Among 460 individuals with optimal blood pressure (<120/80 mmHg) at baseline, 55 progressed to hypertension during 5 years of follow-up. Twenty-nine cases of incident hypertension and 29 controls, matched for age, sex, and baseline systolic blood pressure, were included in this study. Serum metabolites were measured by gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. t-test and logistic regression analysis were applied to investigate the association between metabolites and incident hypertension. Among the 241 metabolites identified in this study, baseline levels of 26 metabolites were significantly different between hypertension and control groups. After adjusting for body mass index, smoking, and drinking, 16 out of the 26 metabolites were still associated with hypertension risk including four amino acids. Amino acids were negatively associated with risk of future hypertension, with odds ratio (OR) ranging from 0.33 to 0.53. Two of these amino acids were essential amino acids including threonine and phenylalanine. Higher level of lyxose, a fermentation product of gut microbes, was associated with higher risk of hypertension. Our study identified multiple metabolites that associated with hypertension risk. These findings implied that low amino acid levels and gut microbiome might play an important role in the pathogenesis of hypertension. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Compared to marine carbonate around the world, lacustrine carbonate is relatively scarce. Much less attention has been paid to it. Lacustrine carbonate, a product of mixed deposition of continental clastics and carbonate under special conditions, can be both important source rocks, and oil and gas reservoir rocks. Qaidam Basin is a large salt lake basin on the Tibetan Plateau where oil and gas flow has recently been discovered in lacustrine algal limestone. • Radial growth of Abies delavayi in southwest China is mainly limited by high temperatures and low moisture availability. • Tree growth rate of A. delavayi has been declining since the 1950s, accompanied with a remarkable increase of iWUE. • Xylem stable carbon (δ13C) and oxygen (δ18O) isotopic composition shifted to higher values from cold to warm years. • Growth declines of A. delavayi were driven by increasing drought stress and stomatal closure under a warming climate. Long-term tree growth trends and physiological responses to environmental changes, i.e., climate warming, and the rise of atmospheric [CO 2 ] (C a), need to be investigated across diverse forest ecosystems. We detected long-term trends in tree growth and δ13C derived intrinsic water use efficiency (iWUE) of Abies delavayi in the Cangshan Mountains, at its southern distribution edge in the Hengduan Mountains in southwestern China. We applied a dual-isotopic approach (δ13C, δ18O) to detect the shifts of tree physiological responses (photosynthetic, stomatal conductance) from colder to warmer conditions. Annual basal area increment (BAI) of A. delavayi in the Cangshan Mountains was decreasing since the 1950s, whilst the declining trend of tree growth was not obvious during the earlier period (1800–1951) after removing tree age- and size-related growth signals. Tree growth correlated negatively with temperatures and positively with relative humidity and self-calibrated Palmer drought severity index (scPDSI) during the early growing season (February to June), indicating a predominant growth limitation by moisture availability. Leaf inter-cellular [CO 2 ] (C i) derived from tree-ring δ13C of A. delavayi increased over time, with a rate slower than atmospheric C a rise, resulting in a decrease in the C i /C a ratio. Intrinsic water-use efficiency (iWUE) was increasing, especially after the 1950s. Dual-isotopic analyses revealed a reduction of stomatal conductance and stable or declined photosynthetic assimilation under warmer and drier environmental conditions. Recent growth decline of A. delavayi in the Cangshan Mountains was mainly related to the increase of warming-mediated drought stress and the resulting stomatal closure, while a positive effect of CO 2 fertilization was diminished under warming and drying environmental conditions. Abstract: Mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) is an important mediator for cross talk between nutritional signals and metabolic signals of insulin by downregulating insulin receptor substrate proteins. Therefore, mTOR inhibition could become a therapeutic strategy in insulin-resistant states, including insulin resistance induced by burn. We tested this hypothesis in the rat model of 30% TBSA full thickness burn, using the mTOR inhibitor rapamycin. Rapamycin (0.4mg/kg, i.p.) was injected 2h before euglycemic–hyperinsulinemic glucose clamps at 4 days after burn. IRS-1, phospho-serine307, phospho-tyrosine of IRS-1 and phospho-mTOR in muscle tissue were determined by immunoprecipitation and Western blot analysis or immunohistochemistry. Plasma TNF-α, insulin and C-peptide were determined before and after euglycemic–hyperinsulinemic glucose clamps. Our data showed that TNF-α, insulin and C-peptide significantly increased in the early stage after burn (P <0.01). The infused rates of total 10% glucose (GIR, mg/kgmin) significantly decreased at 4 days after burn. The level of IRS-1 serine307 phosphorylation in muscle in vivo significantly increased after burn (P <0.01), while insulin-induced tyrosine phosphorylation of IRS-1 significantly decreased (P <0.01). Inhibition of mTOR by rapamycin inhibited the phosphorylation of mTOR, reduced serine307 phosphorylation, elevated tyrosine phosphorylation and partly prevented the decrease of GIR after burn. However, TNF-α, insulin and C-peptide were not decreased by rapamycin treatment postburn. Taken together, these results indicate that the mTOR pathway is an important modulator of the signals involved in the acute regulation of insulin-stimulated glucose metabolism, and at least, partly contributes to burn-induced insulin resistance. mTOR inhibition may become a therapeutic strategy in insulin-resistant states after burn. Burn wound excision and grafting is a common clinical practice that decreases patient morbidity and mortality. It is not known, however, if the salutary effects of this procedure are related to effects on interleukin 6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF-) α, and to reducing insulin resistance after burn. Sprague–Dawley rats were randomly divided into three groups: control, burn, burn±excision groups. Rats in burn group were given a third-degree scald burn covering 30% total body surface area (TBSA) and no wound excision. Rats in burn±excision group were subjected to a 30% third-degree burn followed by complete excision and allografting of the injury site within 15min after burn. The rats in control group were treated in the same manner as the burn group, except that they were immersed in a room-temperature water. Glucose tolerance tests (GTT) were observed at 3 days after burn, euglycemic–hyperinsulinemic glucose clamps were performed at 4 days after burn and interleukin 6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF-) α were determined after euglycemic–hyperinsulinemic glucose clamps. The levels of IL-6 and TNF-α increased after burn. Significant differences in GTT were observed between control and burn groups, and the rate of glucose infused measured in burned rats was significantly decreased compared with that in control at 4 days after burn. Early excision and grafting significantly decreased levels of IL-6 and TNF-α, and further reduced insulin resistance following thermal injury compared with burn group. Conclusion: Early excision and grafting appeared to have an effect on inflammatory mediators and further reduced insulin resistance induced by major burns. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Alpine meadow degradation causes a notable decrease in palatable grasses and an increase in forbs and toxic plants in recent decades. Stellera chamaejasme is one of the most serious toxic weeds, which exerts an increasing threat on alpine meadow in Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau. Combined DNA sequencing with geostatistics was applied to analyze a typical degraded meadow invaded by S. chamaejasme in Qinghai Province, China. The study aimed to determine the spatial variation of soil fungi and its interrelationship with the plant–soil environment. Alpha diversity and relative abundance of fungal phyla and classes showed moderate or strong spatial dependency and were structured in patches of 19–318 m, and taxonomic composition exhibited much higher spatial variability than alpha diversity. Compared to plant cover, the matching of patch size showed a closer spatial link between soil properties and fungal community. Community coverage, SOM, TN, TP, and TK positively correlated to fungal diversity and taxonomic composition; no direct correlation was found between S. chamaejasme coverage and fungal community. The result suggested significant but weak association between plant–soil properties and soil fungal community at local scale. Patchy pattern of S. chamaejasme may disturb spatial variations of soil properties and fungal community, since S. chamaejasme in higher coverage corresponded to lower TK content, which contributed to a decrease in fungal diversity indirectly. OBJECTIVE. This review was an effort to systematically examine the nationwide data available on pediatric burns requiring hospitalization to reveal burn epidemiology and guide future education and prevention. METHODS. The China Biomedical Disk Database, Chongqing VIP Database, and China Journal Full-Text Database were searched for articles reporting data on children and their burns from January 2000 through December 2005. Studies were included that systematically investigated the epidemiology of pediatric burns requiring hospitalization in China. Twenty-eight articles met the inclusion criteria, all of which were retrospective analyses. For each study included, 2 investigators independently abstracted the data related to the population description by using a standard form and included the percentage of patients with burn injury who were <15 years old; gender and distribution of age; type of residential area; place of injury; distribution of months and time; reasons for burn; anatomical sites of burn; severity of burn; and mortality and cause of death. These data were extracted, and a retrospective statistical description was performed with SPSS11.0 (SPSS Inc. Chicago, IL). RESULTS. Of the pediatric patients studied, the proportion of children with burn injury ranged from 22.50% to 54.66%, and the male/female ratio ranged from 1.25:1 to 4.42:1. The ratio of children aged ≤3 years to those >3 years was 0.19:1 to 4.18:1. The rural/urban ratio was 1.60:1 to 12.94:1. The ratio of those who were burned indoors versus outdoors was 1.62 to 17.00, and there were no effective hints on the distribution of seasons and anatomical sites of burn that could be found. The peak hours of pediatric burn were between 17:00 and 20:00. Most articles reported the sequence of reasons as hot liquid > flame > electricity > chemical, and scalding was, by far, the most predominant reason for burn. The majority of the studies reported the highest proportion involved in moderate burn, and the lowest proportion was for critical burn. The mortality rate ranged from 0.49% to 9.08%, and infection, shock, and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome were the most common causes of death. CONCLUSIONS. Considering the national proportion of children, a high proportion of hospitalized patients with burn injury were children; those who were male, aged ≤3 years, and lived most of the time indoors were especially susceptible. Great attention should be paid when hot water is used or during suppertime. Due to the occlusion of the moon, an annular solar eclipse will have an effect on the ionosphere above the earth. The change of the ionosphere, for the low-frequency time-code signal that relies on it as a reflection medium for long-distance propagation, the signal field strength, and other parameters will also produce corresponding changes, which will affect the normal operation of the low-frequency time-code time service system. This paper selects the solar eclipse that occurred in China on 21 June 2020, and uses the existing measurement equipment to carry out experimental research on the low-frequency time-code signal. We measured and analyzed the signal field strength from 20 June 2020 to 23 June 2020, and combined solar activity data, ionospheric data, and geomagnetic data, and attempted to explore the reasons and rules of the change of signal parameters. The results showed that the field strength of the low-frequency time-code signal changed dramatically within a short time period, the max growth value can reach up to 17 dBμV/m and the variation trend yielded 'three mutations'. This change in signal field strength is probably due to the occurrence of a solar eclipse that has an effect on the ionosphere. Background: Helicobacter himalayensis was isolated from Marmota himalayana in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, China, and is a new non-H. pylori species, with unclear taxonomy, phylogeny, and pathogenicity. Results: A comparative genomic analysis was performed between the H. himalayensis type strain 80(YS1)T and other the genomes of Helicobacter species present in the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) database to explore the molecular evolution and potential pathogenicity of H. himalayensis. H. himalayensis 80(YS1)T formed a clade with H. cinaedi and H. hepaticus that was phylogenetically distant from H. pylori. The H. himalayensis genome showed extensive collinearity with H. hepaticus and H. cinaedi. However, it also revealed a low degree of genome collinearity with H. pylori. The genome of 80(YS1)T comprised 1,829,936 bp, with a 39.89% GC content, a predicted genomic island, and 1769 genes. Comparatively, H. himalayensis has more genes for functions in "cell wall/membrane/envelope biogenesis" and "coenzyme transport and metabolism" sub-branches than the other compared helicobacters, and its genome contained 42 virulence factors genes, including that encoding cytolethal distending toxin (CDT). Conclusions: We characterized the H. himalayensis 80(YS1)T genome, its phylogenetic position, and its potential pathogenicity. Our isolation of the organism from 2 of 36 captive rhesus macaques in China and finding antibodies against B. quintana in 12 of 33 indicates that the reservoir hosts of B. quintana may include primates other than humans. The Fenghe River Estuary (FRE), a long-narrow estuary located in the West Coast New Area of Qingdao, China, has suffered severe sediment siltation in the downstream of a tidal barrier over the past decades. In order to relieve the sediment siltation and promote local economic development, a restoration scheme with new shoreline and bathymetry was proposed for the FRE. In this study, a wave-current-sediment coupled model was established for the FRE based on the numerical model MIKE21, which was well validated against the observation. The model was then applied to estimate hydrodynamic and morphological responses of the long-narrow estuary to the restoration scheme and a major storm. The numerical results indicate that the restoration scheme has a great influence on the current fields in the estuarine channel, resulting in the current speed in the channel to be more spatially uniform. Under the restoration scheme, the spatial pattern of suspended sediment concentration in the estuary is redistributed due to the change of local tidal asymmetry associated with geometry and topography variation. • Complementary hydrology niches exist from species-poor to species-rich communities. • Hydrology niches became stable among species with the increase in species richness. • Meanwhile, the degree of hydrological niche segregation became increasingly small. • Variations in resource and resource partitioning help maintain plant coexistence. Plant competition is a determinant of plant community formation, while resource partitioning is regarded as a critical factor for maintaining species coexistence under competition. However, how resource partitioning varies with species richness remains unclear; additionally, empirical studies of the dynamic processes involved in plant resource competition, especially that for belowground resources, are urgently needed. Here, we used the stable isotope approach to study the temporal dynamics of plant hydrological niches from species-poor to species-rich communities (including monocultural plantations, agroforestry systems and more diverse tropical rainforests) in a tropical area of southwestern China. We found that plant species in multispecies communities could be divided into two groups by comparison of their hydrological niches: deep-resource users and shallow-resource users. Resource partitioning was obvious between these two groups. However, resource partitioning was narrower within deep and shallow-resource users. In addition, with an increase in species richness, the general tendency of resource partitioning among all species became not just increasingly narrow but also uniform and stable. When we combined this information with data on belowground resource distribution and its correlations with plant resource use, we also found that the greater the species diversity and the smaller the resource use advantages among species, the easier it was for the species to achieve "competitive reversals". This study confirmed the generality of the seasonal segregation of the plant hydrological niche and demonstrated that variations in both environmental resources and plant resource partitioning weaken the resource use advantages of species, representing an important mechanism that helps maintain the coexistence of competing species in a species-rich community. These findings therefore provide novel insights for understanding species combinations and plant belowground interactions in complex communities and will be beneficial for seeking solutions to some important ecological issues, such as reconstruction of tropical rainforests. More and more attention has been given to the role of electric vehicles in reducing the economic cost and carbon emissions of the power system through the vehicle-to-grid (V2G) mode, as well as helping to integrate renewable energy power. The promotion of V2G mode needs to consider the effectiveness of policy costs, so it is urgent to estimate the potential benefits of V2G. In this paper, a multi-regional power dispatch and expansion model is constructed from the perspective of power system by taking China's plan to reach 1.2 billion kW of installed wind and photovoltaic power generation capacity in 2030 as an example, combining with the development planning of electric vehicles and power systems. The results show that by 2030, the implementation of unidirectional V2G and bidirectional V2G in China can reduce the total cost of power system by 2.02% and 2.08%, reduce the annual carbon emissions of the power system by 2.27% and 2.95%, and increase the total proportion of wind and photovoltaic power generation by 1.33% and 1.28% in the power mix. An increasing proportion of electric vehicles participate in V2G increases the proportion of new-installed wind generation and decreases that of photovoltaic power. Abstract: Background: This article reports a chemical burn incident that occurred on August 7th, 2005, when a Matsa typhoon hit Shanghai, China. This is the largest chemical burn incident reported in the literature for 20 years in China, involving 118 alkali burn patients who were rescued by the Burn Department of Shanghai Changhai Hospital independently. Methods: The scene of the incident was investigated, and the clinical, emergency and hospitalized data of the patients were summarized. Results: The main injurious chemical was a water solution of sodium hydroxide and ammonium chloride. The 118 victims were mostly young men with 5%TBSA deep thickness burn of both lower extremities, including 31 patients who had additional light coughing. Of 58 patients who were finally hospitalized, 42 patients received surgical treatment. Most of these patients recovered within 1 month. There were no deaths. Discussion: Retrospective analysis of the therapeutic data of the incident demonstrates that pre-designed disaster planning for emergency management of mass burn patients, an effective command group, accurate assessment of pathological conditions, and correct allocation of different casualties are key elements in successful management in a mass casualty even involving burn patients. The increase in electricity consumption in rural areas has led to an overall increase in the peak load in both winter and summer, challenging the reliability of low-voltage distribution networks. A typical rural house in Xi 'an area of Shaanxi Province is considered a case study. To aid the investigation, a ground source heat pump system is developed, installed, and used as the experimental platform. The simulation model of the rural residential building's energy consumption is established, and the demand response peak regulation strategy for the rural residential building in winter is investigated. Using the developed model, two demand response peak regulation models, Direct Compressor Control Mechanism (DCCM) and Thermostat Set-point Control Mechanism (TSCM) are formulated. Combined with a long-term and short-term memory neural network power load forecasting model, a simulation is carried out to analyze and study the indoor temperature, operating energy consumption, and other parameters under the two peak regulation scenarios. The proposed strategy is assessed and evaluated. Compared with the baseline model, the proposed strategy allows a reduction in the total building operating energy consumption of 41.9 % for the DCCM model and 17.2 % for the TSCM model. Due to the spatial interaction effect of air quality, the spatial econometric method is selected. Based on Air Quality Index (AQI) daily panel data of 47 counties in southern Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) from 2014 to 2017, Spatial Lag Model (SLM) and Spatial Durbin Model (SDM) are used to study the impact of HSR on county-level air quality. We found that: (1) air quality has a significant spatial spillover effect. (2) During the observation period, an HSR station can improve the air quality of the local county, but it will not affect the neighboring counties in the short run. (3) HSR does not produce a significant "corridor effect" on the air quality along the route. Introduction: Blast injuries are complex types of physical trauma resulting from direct or indirect exposure to an explosion, which can be divided into four classes: primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary. Primary blast injury results in damage, principally, in gas-containing organs such as the lungs (blast lung injury, BLI). BLI is defined as radiological and clinical evidence of acute lung injury occurring within 12h of exposure to an explosion and not due to secondary or tertiary injury. BLI often combines with cutaneous thermal injury, a type of quaternary blast injury, either in terrorist bomb attacks or in civilian accidental explosions. This report summarizes our experience in the management of combined massive burn and BLI at a Shanghai Burn Center in China.Methods: A retrospective observational analysis of clinical data was performed for massive burn patients with or without BLI during a 20-year interval. Patient characteristics, causes of injury, clinical parameters, management, and outcomes were recorded and evaluated.Results: A total of 151 patients (120 males and 31 females) with severe burn injury (≥50% TBSA) treated at the Burn Center of Changhai Hospital in Shanghai between July 1997 and June 2017 were enrolled in this study. Their mean age was 38.6±17.8 (3-75) years. Among them, 28 patients had combined BLI and burn injury and 39 patients had no BLI or smoke inhalation injury (non-BLI-SII). No significant difference was observed in the burn area or full-thickness burn area between the two groups. The lowest PaO2/fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO2) ratio during the first 24h in BLI patients was significantly lower than that in non-BLI-SII patients. Exudative changes were observed by X-ray radiography in all BLI patients but not in non-BLI-SII patients within 6h after injury. A significantly higher proportion of colloids were used for fluid resuscitation in BLI patients than that in non-BLI-SII patients. A higher proportion and longer time of mechanical ventilation were needed for BLI patients than those for non-BLI-SII patients, and a higher proportion of patients received sedative agents in the BLI group than those in the non-BLI-SII group. The first escharectomy was performed relatively later in BLI patients than in non-BLI-SII patients because of more time taken by BLI patients to recover from lung injury. The length of ICU and hospital stay in BLI patients was significantly longer than that in non-BLI-SII patients. No significant difference in the overall mortality was detected between these two groups.Conclusion: It is a formidable challenge for clinicians to diagnose and manage massive burn patients combined with BLI. A comprehensive treatment approach is strongly recommended, including fluid resuscitation, airway management, mechanical ventilation, and surgical treatment. Given the high mortality of massive burn patients combined with BLI even in a recognized burn center, more prospective studies are encouraged to assess more effective strategies for the treatment of such patients. Hands are frequent sites of burn but few related studies were reported in China. The aim of this study was to examine the impacts of gender, age, seasons, place, etiology, total body surface area (TBSA), depth, infection and comorbidities on prognosis following injury in a cohort of hand burn inpatients. This is a retrospective study of total 378 inpatients admitted to the burn center of Changhai hospital from January 2009 to December 2013. The present research showed the male inpatients were predominant and most of the inpatients aged from 20 to 49. Flame (37.04%) and electricity (25.40%) were the major causes of hand burns. Hand burns happened more commonly in work place (60.85%). The study preliminarily pointed out that male, flame and depth were the most significant factors impacting surgery. The main factors relevant to amputation were identified including the electrical burns and other etiology of burns. In addition, depth of hand burns was proved to have a higher impact on length of hospital stay (LOS) than other factors. Abstract: Objective: To explore the risk factors relating to lower digestive tract haemorrhage in severe burns and summarise the experience in clinical diagnosis and treatment. Method: General data of 103 patients with severe extensive burns (EBs) admitted to our burn centre in Shanghai between 1997 and 2009 were reviewed retrospectively. The risk factors relating to EB-complicated lower digestive tract haemorrhage were analysed systematically with respect to the clinical features and experiences in treatment, and prognosis. Results: Of the 103 severe EBs, five developed lower digestive tract haemorrhage with an occurrence of 4.9%. Four of them were proved to have multiple mucosal erosions in caecum, colon and rectum, and the remaining one was proved rectal ulcerative haemorrhage. In comparison with upper digestive tract haemorrhage, lower digestive tract haemorrhage in the present group was characterised by a longer duration (median 4.0 days, interquartile range (IQR) 1.5–14.5 days vs. median 2.0 days (IQR 1.0–3.0 days), P <0.05). Deep burns, especially fourth-degree burns, with complications of severe systemic infection, formed the main risk factors relating to lower digestive tract haemorrhage in severe EB patients. Conclusion: Severe EB-complicated lower digestive tract haemorrhage is a critical condition in burns, which usually have deep wounds with severe infection surfaces that are difficult to deal with. Enteroscopic haemostasis in controlling lower digestive tract haemorrhage is usually ineffective. Clinical experiences indicate that early management of the wound with effective preventive and therapeutive measures for infection control may be a good choice in the prevention and treatment of lower digestive tract haemorrhage leading to improvement in its prognosis. Abstract: Alternation of surface markers on monocytes is associated with the development of inflammation. The goals of the present study were to detect CD47 expression on monocytes by flow cytometry and explore its relationship with disease severity and MODS in burned patients. The results show CD47 expression on monocytes from all burned patients (n =21) was lower than that from the healthy population (n =21) for 24 days after burn. There was a significant difference in CD47 expression on monocytes between the patients with differing burn severity in the first 7 days after injury (P <0.05). Considering the relationship between CD47 expression and MODS, we found the CD47 expression on monocytes from patients with MODS was lower (P <0.05) in the first 3 days after injury than that from patients without MODS. In conclusion, diminished CD47 expression on monocytes is associated with burn severity and the occurrence of MODS in burn patients. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Introduction: Early diagnosis and treatment for thermal injury with septic complications continue to be a serious clinical problem. In this study, plasma biomarkers of rats in the burn and/or septic models were investigated with a metabolomic method. Methods: Rat plasma samples were analyzed by ultra-performance liquid chromatography–quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC–Q-TOF-MS). Multivariate analysis, the principal components analysis (PCA), was used to validate metabolic changes. In addition, another multivariate method, the orthogonal partial least-squares analysis (OPLS), was used to profile potential biomarkers in models. Results: Nine characteristic metabolites, including hypoxanthine, indoxyl sufate, glucuronic acid, gluconic acid, proline, uracil, nitrotyrosine, uric acid, and trihydroxy cholanoic acid were identified in models of thermal injury and/or sepsis. Conclusion: These biomarkers were mainly involved in oxidative stress and tissue damage, and might supply evidence for distinguishing burned septic patients from non-septic ones. Abstract: The 105 patients admitted to our Burn Institute from 1st January 1996 to 31st December 2007, with ship fire-related burns were studied retrospectively. The mean age was 30.2±12.6 years with a range of 1–58. One hundred and three patients (98.1%) were men and 2 (1.9%) women. The mean total burn surface area (TBSA) was 46.5%, mostly deep burns. The most common areas of burn were the head, neck and upper limb. Summer months July, August, June and September were times of highest incidence. Fifty-seven (54.3%) patients had inhalation injury, 42 received tracheotomy, and 38 received mechanical ventilation. The treatment was complex, difficult, long, and costly. The interval between burn and start of resuscitation ranged from 2.1 to 67h with a mean of (5.9±4.4)h. Forty-two patients (40%) started intravenous fluid resuscitation 6h after burn. Twenty-four patients (23%) received insufficient fluid resuscitation developed hypotension and severe shock at admission. Ninety-two (87.6%) patients required operations including tracheotomy, debridement and grafting, per patient was 5.2. The mean length of hospital stay was 44.2 days. Pulmonary edema was the most common complication during the early post-burn period (within 7 days), and sepsis during the later period (>7 days). Nine patients died of MODS or sepsis, giving a mortality rate of 8.57%. Conclusion: Caution and preventive measures are needed for persons in ships for fire-related burns. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Objective: To reveal the characteristic and distribution of length of hospital stay (LOS) and direct hospitalisation costs of paediatric scald. Methods: A prospective case series observation was performed from January 2005 to December 2006 at the Burn Center, Changhai Hospital, Shanghai, China. The information, such as demographics, clinical diagnosis and treatments since admission, of the paediatric scald patients included in the series was recorded. The direct cost of a treatment event was recorded into the price system when it was incurred. All cost data were summarised on completion of the study. The distribution of LOS and the hospitalisation costs were recorded by gender, age, total burn area, depth of burn, blood transfusion and patterns of treatment. Mann–Whitney signed-rank test was used to assess the differences between continuous, non-normally distributed variables, and multiple linear regression was used to model LOS and direct hospitalisation costs. Statistical analyses were undertaken with SPSS 15.0 statistical software. Results: Patients aged 3 years or less accounted for more than half of the total LOS and hospitalisation costs, patients with burn area less than 10%TBSA (total burn surface area) accounted for more than 70% of the total LOS and more than half of the hospitalisation costs and patients with second-degree burn accounted for more than 78% of the total LOS and hospitalisation costs. Depth of burn, area of burn, patterns of treatment and blood transfusion were independent predictors of LOS; whereas LOS, area of burn and blood transfusion were independent predictors of hospitalisation costs. Conclusion: Paediatric scalds have particular characteristics in terms of distribution of LOS and direct hospitalisation costs and the factors influencing them. The data presented in this study should assist burn care practitioners and hospital epidemiologists estimate and compare the economic burden of paediatric burns at other institutions; it may also be useful in resource allocation and cost-effectiveness analysis of treatment versus prevention strategies. To understand the distribution characteristics and restoration status of vegetation at Sanxingdui City Wall, we sampled five typical communities of the city wall at the Sanxingdui site and explored the stability and niche characteristics of herbaceous plant communities under different maintenance measures (natural regeneration, planting, abandoned field, shrub removal, and pruning) following the niche theory and the improved contribution law method. A total of 87 herbaceous species belonging to 73 genera and 31 families were recorded. Compositae and Gramineae were dominant, and perennial herbs were the majority. There were differences in the niche breadth of major herbaceous species under different maintenance measures. The niche breadth of annual plants was higher under natural regeneration and shrub removal, and that of perennial plants was higher under planting, abandoned field, and pruning measures. The niche overlap and similarity of herbaceous plants were higher under natural regene-ration, shrub removal and pruning measures, and were the lowest under planting measure. The importance values were positively correlated with the niche breadth, but the ranking was not completely consistent. Species with higher niche breadth usually had higher probability of niche overlap and higher niche similarity. Combined with the M-Godron's stability analysis, community stability was comparable among shrub removal, pruning, and natural regeneration measures whereas the abandoned field and planting showed lower community stability. We recommended the implementation of in situ conservation measures based on natural regeneration, supplemented by scientific artificial maintenance (shrub removal, pruning, etc .) when necessary, so as to achieve a stable species composition and promote the sustainable development and vegetation landscape restoration at Sanxingdui City Wall.

To deeply understand the effects of water and temperature factors on the xylem formation of Populus euphratica , taking the Yingsu section in the lower reaches of Tarim River as an example, we selected micro-coring samples of P. euphratica around monitoring wells F 2 and F 10 in the 100 and 1500 m distance from the channel of Tarim River. We used wood anatomy method to analyze the xylem anatomy of P. euphratica and its response to water and temperature factors. The results showed that the changes of the total anatomical vessel area and the vessel number of P. euphratica in the two plots were basically consistent during the whole growing season. The vessel number of xylem conduits of P. euphratica increased slowly with the increases of groundwater depth, while the total conduit area increased firstly and then decreased. The total vessel area, minimum vessel area, average vessel area, and maximum vessel area of P. euphratica xylem increased significantly with the increases of temperature in the growing season. The contribution of groundwater depth and air temperature to P. euphratica xylem varied among different growth stages. In the early growing season, air temperature had the largest contribution to the number and total area of xylem conduits of P. euphratica . During the middle growing season, air temperature and groundwater depth jointly affected the parameters of each conduit. During the later growing season, groundwater depth had the largest contribution to the number and total area of conduits. Results of the sensitivity analysis indicated that the groundwater depth sensitive to xylem vessel number change of P. euphratica was 5.2 m and that to the change in the total conduit area was 5.9 m. The temperature sensitive to total vessel area of P. euphratica xylem was 22.0 ℃, and that to average vessel area was 18.5 ℃. Therefore, the sensitive groundwater depth affecting xylem growth was at the range of 5.2-5.9 m, and the sensitive temperature was at the range of 18.5-22 ℃. This study could provide scientific basis for the restoration and protection of P. euphratica forest in the lower reaches of Tarim River.

The unsaturated permeability coefficients are often used to solve geotechnical problems associated with unsaturated soils. But it is very difficult to measure. However, the unsaturated permeability coefficients can be predicted by the Soil-water Characteristic Curves (SWCCs). The Van Genuchten Model (VG model) is very rife as it's smooth and good fitting, thus, it has the most research data. Therefore, the research data on VG model parameters (α, n, θs and θr) of Malan loess in Chinese Loess Plateau are collected in the past two decades to obtain the spatial distribution characteristics of parameters. The trend surface analysis method is employed to clarify the regional scale distribution and the variation regular pattern on ArcGIS. Then the linear regression method is utilized to fit the relationship between suction and water content in three different regions of Chinese Loess Plateau, which is divided according to the properties and particle gradation. By using this relationship and the trend surface analysis contour map, the unsaturated permeability coefficient of the sample can be predicted after measuring the saturated permeability coefficient. The example verification shows that the difference between the prediction results and the experimental results is very small when the sample has the lower saturation, and the deviation is slightly larger if it has the higher saturation, but they are all within the acceptable range. This method not only saves the test cost, but also considers the physical properties of the loess in the three different regions of the Loess Plateau. With the improvement of data and the gradual improvement of sampling density, the prediction accuracy will gradually improve. This study summarized and analyzed the current acne-relieving Chinese medicinal health products and Chinese patent medicines,aiming at providing references for the formulation and development of acne-relieving health products. The information on acne-relieving health products published by the Department of Special Food Safety Supervision and Management,the State Administration for Market Regulation( SAMR) was retrieved,and the Chinese patent medicines on DRUGDATAEXPY were searched. Microsoft Excel and the Traditional Chinese Medicine Inheritance Support System V2. 5( TCMISS) were employed to statistically analyze the characteristics of formulations. Forty-three acne-relieving health products were obtained,including 40 ones containing Chinese herbal medicines. Six Chinese herbal medicines showed a usage frequency ≥8,with 61 times in use totally,including Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma( 13),Lonicerae Japonicae Flos( 12),Taraxaci Herba( 11),ALOE( 9),Carthami Flos( 8),and Rhei Radix et Rhizoma( 8). A total of 29 Chinese patent medicines with similar efficacy were collected in DRUGDATAEXPY. Nine Chinese herbal medicines showed a usage frequency ≥6,with 63 times in use,including Rhei Radix et Rhizoma( 10),Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma( 8),Scutellariae Radix( 8),Lonicerae Japonicae Flos( 7),Angelicae Sinensis Radix( 6),Paeoniae Radix Rubra( 6),Astragali Radix( 6),Paeoniae Radix Alba( 6),and Gardeniae Fructus( 6). Through unsupervised hierarchical entropy-based clustering of the above-mentioned Chinese medicinal health products and Chinese patent medicines,five and three new formulas were obtained,respectively. The selection of Chinese herbal medicines was consistent with the principles of traditional Chinese medicine( TCM) theories in relieving acne,i. e.,dispelling exterior wind,ventilating lungs,clearing heat,dissipating mass,promoting diuresis,relaxing bowels,removing toxin,activating blood,resolving stasis,eliminating phlegm,and regulating Qi. According to the &quot; lung governing skin and body hair&quot; and &quot; interior-exterior relationship between lung and large intestine&quot; in TCM theories,the idea that acne could be treated by relieving constipation was proposed,which provided new methods and references for the research and development of Chinese medicinal health products.

The present study analyzed the current Chinese medicinal health products and Chinese patent medicines effective in boosting memory,aiming at providing references for the formulation and development of memory-boosting health products. The information on memory-boosting health products published by the Department of Special Food Safety Supervision and Management,the State Administration for Market Regulation( SAMR) was collected and the Chinese patent medicines on DRUGDATAEXPY were searched. Microsoft Excel and the TCMISS were used to statistically analyze the characteristics of formulations. A total of 212 memory-boosting health products were obtained from SAMR,including 83 ones containing Chinese medicinal materials. Twelve Chinese herbal medicines showed a usage frequency ≥ 8,with 151 times in use. In DRUGDATAEXPY,258 similar Chinese patent medicines were collected.Twelve Chinese herbal medicines showed a usage frequency ≥ 58,with 907 times in use. Through unsupervised hierarchical entropybased clustering of the above-mentioned Chinese medicinal health products and Chinese patent medicines separately,5 and 12 new formulas were obtained. The selection of Chinese herbal medicines for the new formulas was consistent with the principles of traditional Chinese medicine( TCM) theories,i. e.,tonifying kidney and marrow,benefiting Qi,nourishing Yin,resolving phlegm,and eliminating stasis. According to TCM theories,syndrome differentiation of the users was conducted,and the formulas were designed following the correspondence of syndromes with formulas and Chinese herbal medicines. This study is expected to provide new ideas and methods for the development of Chinese medicinal health products and accurately guide practical applications to exert the advantages of TCM in health care based on syndrome differentiation and improve the effect of Chinese medicinal health products.

Aspalathus linearis is a needle-shaped shrub that grows in the Cedarberg mountains in southern South Africa, with an extremely high medicinal value. In 2014, China has approved A. linearis as a new food material. Through retrieval in CNKI, Wanfang, VIP, Web of Science, PubMed and Scopus databases, the literatures were excluded, classified and summarized.On the basis of Chinese medicine theory, the traditional Chinese medicine properties were deducted. Finally, 264 relevant li-teratures were included and classified into 6 categories: review, planting, chemical composition, clinical study, pharmacological effects and safety. The traditional Chinese medicinal properties were deducted as sweet flavor and neutral property. It enters kidney, spleen, heart and liver channels. The major functions are to tonify the kidney and benefit the essence, nourish Qi and spleen, nourish Yin and prompt the production of body fluid, tranquilize mind, and relieve pain. It can be used for soreness of the waist and fatigue, sexual disinterest, limbs heaviness, thirst due to insufficiency of fluid and internal heat, irritability and insomnia, forget fulness, stomachache, joint pain, dysmenorrhea, headache. Preparation for external use can treat eczema itching. Water decoction(2-15 g) can also be used as tea directly. This paper defined the traditional Chinese medicine properties of A. linearis, so as to provide the theoretical basis for further clinical application.

Cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases are the leading cause of death for residents in China. Danhong Injection(DHI) decoction piece is prepared from Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma and Carthami Flos, with the function of promoting the blood circulation, removing the blood stasis, relaxing the sinews and dredging the collaterals. In recent years, about 100 million bottles of DHI have been sold. Consequently, its safety and effectiveness are very important to a large number of patients. Raw materials are the source and foundation for production of traditional Chinese medicine injections. In this article, we reviewed the identification of Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma and Carthami Flos, resource distribution, cultivation, quality control, and detection of xenobiotic pollutants, in order to guide the production of high-quality, stable, and pollution-free raw materials. This will be a benefit in ensuring the safety and effectiveness of DHI and reducing the incidence of adverse reactions from the raw materials. By comparing the similarities and differences between the quality standards of Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, Carthami Flos and DHI, we provided some comments for improving the quality standards and post-marketing reevaluation of DHI, and provided some theoretical supports for the production of high-quality herbal raw materials.

Aim: A high-risk strategy has been implemented for lipid-lowering therapy in the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease. However, atherosclerosis and cardiovascular events are common among individuals with low cardiovascular risk. This study aimed to determine whether the small dense low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (sdLDLC) level can predict carotid atherosclerosis progression and identify high-risk individuals., Methods: Baseline sdLDLC and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLC) were measured in 808 participants from the Chinese Multi-provincial Cohort Study, aged 45-74 years. Adjusted relative risk was calculated using a modified Poisson regression model to assess the relationship between sdLDLC and 5-year atherosclerosis progression, as indicated by the progression, incidence, and multi-territorial extent of carotid plaque., Results: The 5-year atherosclerosis progression increased significantly with increased sdLDLC. Baseline sdLDLC was significantly associated with the short-term risk of plaque progression after multivariable adjustment, even in participants with low LDLC or a 10-year estimated cardiovascular risk. sdLDLC predicted plaque progression (relative risk 2.05; 95% confidence interval 1.43-2.93) in participants with LDLC ＜130 mg/dL. Furthermore, participants with the highest sdLDLC but intermediate or low cardiovascular risk (accounting for 16% of the cohort) had double the risk of plaque progression, which was comparable to those with the same sdLDLC and high cardiovascular risk, relative to those with the lowest sdLDLC levels and low cardiovascular risk., Conclusions: sdLDLC is independently associated with the progression of carotid atherosclerosis, which may provide a basis for clinicians to reclassify individuals believed to be at low cardiovascular risk into the high-risk category, and those with high sdLDLC may benefit from more aggressive cholesterol-lowering treatment.

Background: Prostate cancer (PCa) is a leading cause of cancer morbidity and mortality in men worldwide; however, PCa incidence and mortality rates vary widely across geographic regions and ethnic groups. The current study was designed to elucidate the pivotal factors involved in PCa occurrence and development., Methods: We performed RNA sequencing on the prostate tumor and adjacent normal tissues from Chinese PCa patients. Genes identified via genome-wide expression profile analysis were validated by quantitative reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemistry. Hypermethylation of CpG islands was assessed by nested methylation-specific PCR. Whole genome microarray analysis was performed using an Affymetrix GeneChip., Results: We identified nine possible abnormally expressed genes (P < .05) and then revealed TWIST2 as having strikingly lower expression in tumors than in control tissues (P < .01). Low messenger RNA expression levels of TWIST2 were associated with hypermethylation of CpG islands in its promoter region. In accordance with these findings, PCa tumor tissues showed markedly decreased TWIST2 protein expression compared to that in both normal and prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia tissues by immunohistochemical staining. Ectopic expression of TWIST2 in LNCap cells not only inhibited cell proliferation and colony formation in vitro and tumor growth in vivo but also induced transcriptional repression of a cell proliferation-related gene cohort, including androgen receptor signaling mediators, cyclins, homeobox genes, forkhead box genes, and SOX2., Conclusions: Our results suggest that TWIST2 could function as a tumor suppressor involved in the pathogenesis of PCa by influencing the expression of target genes and that hypermethylation of the TWIST2 promoter in prostate tumors may be an underlying mechanism for TWIST2 transcriptional silencing., (© 2019 The Authors. Tibetan mural samples from the Jiazhaer mountain cave were studied using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) and immunofluorescence microscopy (IFM). Samples containing protein binders were first identified using ELISA, and then IFM was used to determine the location of protein binders. Using these methods, we discovered gelatin and casein in samples from wall murals, distributed in both red and black pigments. We excluded the possibility of contamination by conducting further experiments where simulated samples were spiked with milk. We conclude that both gelatin and casein were used as binders in the pigments of the Tibetan Buddhist murals in the Jiazhaer (Transliteration from Tibetan) mountain cave. This is the first evidence of casein being used as a binder in Chinese mural pigments.

Background: Experimental studies have shown that cholesterol-overloaded high-density lipoprotein (HDL) can promote the formation of apolipoprotein E (APOE)-containing HDL, a process correcting the atherogenic function of cholesterol-overloaded HDL., Objective: The objective of the study was to explore whether APOE-containing HDL can attenuate the defective impact of cholesterol-overloaded HDL on the development of coronary heart disease (CHD) in humans., Methods: We measured APOE-HDL cholesterol (APOE-HDLC), HDL cholesterol (HDLC), and HDL particle number in 1112 participants aged 45 to 74 years at baseline in a community-based cohort study. Cholesterol molecules per HDL particle (HDL-C/P ratio) were calculated as the ratio of HDLC to HDL particle number. The ratio of APOE-HDLC to total HDLC (APOE-HDLC/HDLC ratio) was calculated to assess the relative proportion of APOE-HDLC in total HDLC., Results: The HDL-C/P ratio was strongly correlated with APOE-HDLC (partial-r: 0.615). Participants with cholesterol-overloaded HDL (indicated by the highest level of the HDL-C/P ratio) had a high APOE-HDLC/HDLC ratio. Baseline cholesterol-overloaded HDL significantly increased the 10-year risk of incident CHD (hazard ratio = 2.42; 95% confidence interval = 1.06-8.32), but this was attenuated by an increased APOE-HDLC/HDLC ratio. Participants with high HDL-C/P ratio and APOE-HDLC/HDLC ratio had a 42% lower risk, whereas those with a high HDL-C/P ratio and low APOE-HDLC/HDLC ratio had a 2.54-fold higher risk, than those with low HDL-C/P ratio and APOE-HDLC/HDLC ratio after multiple adjustments., Conclusion: Cholesterol-overloaded HDLs are related with increased APOE-containing HDL species. APOE-containing HDL was found to attenuate the impact of cholesterol-overloaded HDL on increased incident CHD risk, suggesting that APOE-containing HDL may correct the dysfunction of cholesterol-overloaded HDL., (Copyright © 2017 National Lipid Association. Background: This article reports a chemical burn incident that occurred on 31 August 2013 in Shanghai. We describe situations at the scene, emergency management, triage, evacuation, and follow-up of the victims., Method: The scene of the incident and information on the 41 victims of this industrial chemical incident were investigated. The emergency management, triage, evacuation, and hospitalization data of the patients were summarized., Results: At the time of the incident, 58 employees were working in a closed refrigerator workshop, 41 of whom sustained burns following the leakage of anhydrous ammonia. Ten victims died of severe inhalation injury at the scene, and another five victims died during the process of evacuation to the nearest hospital. After receiving information on the incident, a contingency plan for the burn disaster was launched immediately, and a first-aid group and an emergency and triage group were dispatched by the Changhai Hospital to the scene to aid the medical organization, emergency management, triage, and evacuation. All casualties were first rushed to the nearest hospital by ambulance. The six most serious patients with inhalation injuries were evacuated to the Changhai Hospital and admitted to the burn intensive care unit (BICU) for further treatment, one of whom died of respiratory failure and pulmonary infection., Conclusion: This mass casualty incident of anhydrous ammonia leakage caused potential devastating effects to the society, especially to the victims and their families. Early first-aid organization, emergency management, triage, and evacuation were of paramount importance, especially rapid evaluation of the severity of inhalation injury, and subsequent corresponding medical treatment. The prognosis of ammonia burns was poor and the sequelae were severe. The aim of this study was to investigate whether long-term changes in traditional risk factors affect the progression of carotid atherosclerosis in a Chinese population. This study included 1590 individuals (aged 56.9±8.1 years) with no evidence of carotid plaque at baseline (2002). In 2007, these individuals completed the second risk factors survey and underwent carotid plaque measurement. The incidence of carotid plaque and the total plaque area of maximum plaques (TPA) were used to evaluate the progression of carotid atherosclerosis. In addition to baseline age, systolic blood pressure (SBP), total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), triglyceride (TG), common carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) and current smoking, a 5-year change in SBP was also associated with the incidence of carotid plaque (odds ratio=1.01, 95% confidence interval: 1.01-1.02, P=0.029). Furthermore, multiple linear regression analysis revealed that a 5-year change in SBP had a linear association with TPA after adjusting for baseline risk factors (standardized regression coefficient=0.071, P=0.014). TPA increased both by increasing baseline SBP and by a 5-year SBP change when adjusted for sex, baseline age, TC, HDL-C, CIMT and current smoking (P for trend <0.001 and 0.004). Our study demonstrates that a 5-year change in SBP is independently associated with the progression of carotid atherosclerosis in the Chinese population. These findings underline the importance of early detection and control of SBP for the prevention of atherosclerosis progression. The progression of atherosclerosis is not only associated with hypertension but can also progress silently with the development of SBP.

Objective: The study aims to evaluate the quality of life (QOL) in burn patients in China and find out principal influencing factors, so as to provide evidence for interventions., Methods: A total of 271 burn patients in three major burn units in China were asked to fill in the adapted Chinese version (ACV) of the Burn Specific Health Scale-Brief (ACV BSHS-B) in order to seek out the principal influencing factors in combination with a self-designed demographic and disease condition questionnaire. Multivariable linear regression was used to analyse the principal influencing factors., Results: The findings showed that there were seven principal influencing factors for the overall ACV BSHS-B score. They were: percent total body surface area (TBSA) burned (with the standardised regression coefficient being -0.594), burn area of lower limber (0.241), itch level (-0.227), pain level (-0.220), gender (0.217), mechanical ventilation (0.216) and hand deformity (-0.141)., Conclusion: QOL decreased in burn patients to different degrees depending on the intensity of burns. With a better understanding of influencing factors of burn patients' QOL, the medical and nursing staff can take specific countermeasures to help patients gain a higher QOL., (Copyright © 2013. Objective: To set up prediction models for the risk of new-onset hypertension in Chinese people and explore the risk scores to facilitate the clinical application., Methods: A cohort set up since 1992 with participants aged 35-64 years old from 11 provinces and cities of China was prospectively studied. Logistic regression was used to analyze the risk factors for the incidence of hypertension within 15 years and the prediction models and risk scores were developed with the regression coefficient. The performance of the prediction models were tested and compared with the Framingham model., Results: A total of 3 899 participants free from hypertension at baseline with 15 years follow-up were enrolled in the study. Within 15 years, 1 776 cases of incident hypertension were ascertained with a incidence rate of 45.6%. Two prediction models were set up with age, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, BMI and the history of parental hypertension in the Model 1, while TG and HDL-C added on the basis of Model 1 in the Model 2. Good performance of discrimination and calibration was established in both models with significant difference in C statistics and no significant difference in net reclassification improvement (NRI) index., Conclusion: The hypertension risk prediction models can be used to estimate an individual's absolute risk for hypertension and could facilitate the management of potential hypertension patients.
