Persistent organic pollutants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are of great concern due to their persistence, bioaccumulation and toxic effects. In this work the levels of 16 priority PAHs were determined in water, pore water, sediment, soil and vegetable samples from Minjiang River Estuary, China. Total PAH concentrations varied from 9.9 to 474 μg/l in water, 82.1 to 239 μg/l in pore water, 112 to 877 ng/g dry wt. in surficial sediments, 128 to 465 ng/g dry wt. in soil and 8600 to 111 000 ng/g dry wt. in Chinese vegetables. Overall, the mean concentrations of PAHs were present in higher levels in pore water than that in surface water, due possibly to higher concentrations of dissolved organic carbon or colloids with which the hydrophobic pollutants were strongly associated. Such a concentration gradient implies a potential flux of pollutants from sediment pore water to overlying water. Contamination was dominated by high molecular mass PAH compounds in all samples, indicating combustion-derived sources (for example, pyrolysis at high temperature). The levels of PAHs in water and vegetable were relatively high in comparison to other studies, although PAHs in sediment and soil were comparable to those found in many other similar environments. The ratios of selected PAHs indicated again that PAHs in Minjiang River Estuary were mainly derived from incomplete combustion of fossil fuel. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Persistent organochlorine compounds were analyzed in surface water, porewater and surficial sediment samples from Minjiang River Estuary, which is the first large river in Fujian Province, Southeast of China. The total concentrations of 18 organochlorine pesticides were 214.4–1819, 4541–13 699 ng/l, 28.79–52.07 ng/g in surface water, porewater and sediments (dry weight) respectively, and those of 21 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the three phases were: 203.9–2473, 3192–10 855 ng/l, 15.14–57.93 ng/g respectively. The results showed that the concentrations of these selected organochlorine pesticides and PCBs in porewater were higher than those in surface water. It may be due to the fact that these organic hydrophobic pollutants tend to stay in the sediments, and then re-suspend from the sedimentary phase to the upper water. We have analyzed the distribution characteristics of individual organochlorine pesticide components and PCBs, and found that α-HCH, DDE, Heptachlor, Endosulfan II, Methoxychlor were the most common organochlorine pesticides contaminants. Considering the groups of HCHs (HCHs = α-HCH + β-HCH + γ-HCH + δ-HCH) and DDTs (DDTs = DDT + DDD + DDE), the predominance of β-HCH, DDE in all water, porewater and sediment samples was clearly observed. This observation suggested that β-HCH was resistant to biodegradation and the DDTs had been transformed to its metabolites, DDE and DDD, of which DDE that was more un-degradable. The PCB congeners containing 3–6 chlorines had the great preponderance in the three phase. These results were compared with those present in other estuaries and harbors. Global deltas are facing severe challenges under the impacts of riverine sediment decline and large estuarine projects. Comparing with abundant research on the Yangtze subaqueous delta, the shoals in shallow waters are poorly understood. The Hengsha Shoal, Yangtze Delta, China, expands during the past ∼65 years, with only slight changes during the pre-projects period and remarkable variations in the projects period. It's now half-surrounded by the Hengsha Reclamation Project and the Deep Waterway Project, both facilitating the recent expansion. The current vertical net rate of change in the study area is −2.2 cm/yr, suggesting an overall balance between sediment deposition and erosion. Spatially, the Hengsha Shoal is currently changing from horizontal expansion to vertical accretion. Considering the spatial patterns of erosion/deposition and residual currents and sediment, modern geomorphic changes in the Hengsha Shoal appear to be dominated by internal sediment transport from deep to shallow waters. Considering further possible changing conditions, the future evolution of this shoal and the resulting potential ecological impacts should be studied further. This case study demonstrates that sediment dynamics in semi-artificial shoals can be totally different from the subaqueous delta, highlighting the importance of human engineering in governing large deltas globally. • The Hengsha Shoal expands from slight changes to remarkable alterations. • This Shoal is currently changing from horizontal expansion to vertical accretion. • This study highlights the importance of engineering in governing deltas globally. The climate, substrate, and marine hydrodynamics of Jiangsu, China, tidal flats are suitable for the growth of Spartina alterniflora. Out of 954km coastline, a section of 410km is protected by this plant, with a maximum width over 4km. It functions as a new pioneer stage in plant succession, as a major coastal association, profoundly affecting the coastal environment. Field studies of topography, sedimentology, and vegetation of three typical profiles of Jiangsu coast were conducted in 2000 and 2001. TM satellite images of seven time phases between 1985 and 2001 were used to trace the process of plantation formation.Because of insufficient resolution of the satellites images before 1993 to obtain information on S. alterniflora, we only used those between 1993 and 2001 to classify three stages of their development. The first stage was between 1993 and 1995, with an annual mean expansion rate of 30%. Its area increase is due to enormous seed production and natural spread. The second stage, between 1995 and 1999, had the most rapid with an annual rate of 43%. The third stage, between 1999 and 2001, was only 10%. Its main distribution in Jiangsu lies between mean water level (MWL) and mean high water level (MHWL), on seaward fringe sparse clumps reaching about MWL. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Background: In acute ischemic stroke, there is uncertainty regarding the benefit and risk of administering intravenous alteplase before endovascular thrombectomy., Methods: We conducted a trial at 41 academic tertiary care centers in China to evaluate endovascular thrombectomy with or without intravenous alteplase in patients with acute ischemic stroke. Patients with acute ischemic stroke from large-vessel occlusion in the anterior circulation were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to undergo endovascular thrombectomy alone (thrombectomy-alone group) or endovascular thrombectomy preceded by intravenous alteplase, at a dose of 0.9 mg per kilogram of body weight, administered within 4.5 hours after symptom onset (combination-therapy group). The primary analysis for noninferiority assessed the between-group difference in the distribution of the modified Rankin scale scores (range, 0 [no symptoms] to 6 [death]) at 90 days on the basis of a lower boundary of the 95% confidence interval of the adjusted common odds ratio equal to or larger than 0.8. We assessed various secondary outcomes, including death and reperfusion of the ischemic area., Results: Of 1586 patients screened, 656 were enrolled, with 327 patients assigned to the thrombectomy-alone group and 329 assigned to the combination-therapy group. Endovascular thrombectomy alone was noninferior to combined intravenous alteplase and endovascular thrombectomy with regard to the primary outcome (adjusted common odds ratio, 1.07; 95% confidence interval, 0.81 to 1.40; P = 0.04 for noninferiority) but was associated with lower percentages of patients with successful reperfusion before thrombectomy (2.4% vs. 7.0%) and overall successful reperfusion (79.4% vs. 84.5%). Mortality at 90 days was 17.7% in the thrombectomy-alone group and 18.8% in the combination-therapy group., Conclusions: In Chinese patients with acute ischemic stroke from large-vessel occlusion, endovascular thrombectomy alone was noninferior with regard to functional outcome, within a 20% margin of confidence, to endovascular thrombectomy preceded by intravenous alteplase administered within 4.5 hours after symptom onset.
