Background: while most gut microbiota research has focused on term infants, the health outcomes of preterm infants are equally important. Very-low-birth-weight (VLBW) or extremely-low-birth-weight (ELBW) preterm infants have a unique gut microbiota structure, and probiotics have been reported to somewhat accelerate the maturation of the gut microbiota and reduce intestinal inflammation in very-low preterm infants, thereby improving their long-term outcomes. The aim of this study was to investigate the structure of gut microbiota in ELBW neonates to facilitate the early identification of different types of low-birth-weight (LBW) preterm infants. Methods: a total of 98 fecal samples from 39 low-birth-weight preterm infants were included in this study. Three groups were categorized according to different birth weights: ELBW (n = 39), VLBW (n = 39), and LBW (n = 20). The gut microbiota structure of neonates was obtained by 16S rRNA gene sequencing, and microbiome analysis was conducted. The community state type (CST) of the microbiota was predicted, and correlation analysis was conducted with clinical indicators. Differences in the gut microbiota composition among ELBW, VLBW, and LBW were compared. The value of gut microbiota composition in the diagnosis of extremely low birth weight was assessed via a random forest-machine learning approach. Results: we briefly analyzed the structure of the gut microbiota of preterm infants with low birth weight and found that the ELBW, VLBW, and LBW groups exhibited gut microbiota with heterogeneous compositions. Low-birth-weight preterm infants showed five CSTs dominated by Enterococcus, Staphylococcus, Klebsiella, Streptococcus, Pseudescherichia, and Acinetobacter. The birth weight and clinical indicators related to prematurity were associated with the CST. We found the composition of the gut microbiota was specific to the different types of low-birth-weight premature infants, namely, ELBW, VLBW, and LBW. The ELBW group exhibited significantly more of the potentially harmful intestinal bacteria Acinetobacter relative to the VLBW and LBW groups, as well as a significantly lower abundance of the intestinal probiotic Bifidobacterium. Based on the gut microbiota's composition and its correlation with low weight, we constructed random forest model classifiers to distinguish ELBW and VLBW/LBW infants. The area under the curve of the classifiers constructed with Enterococcus, Klebsiella, and Acinetobacter was found to reach 0.836 by machine learning evaluation, suggesting that gut microbiota composition may be a potential biomarker for ELBW preterm infants. Conclusions: the gut bacteria of preterm infants showed a CST with Enterococcus, Klebsiella, and Acinetobacter as the dominant genera. ELBW preterm infants exhibit an increase in the abundance of potentially harmful bacteria in the gut and a decrease in beneficial bacteria. Background: Studies have revealed the effects of childhood adversity, anxiety, and negative coping on sleep quality in older adults, but few studies have focused on the association between childhood adversity and sleep quality in rural older adults and the potential mechanisms of this influence. In this study, we aim to evaluate sleep quality in rural older adults, analyze the impact of adverse early experiences on their sleep quality, and explore whether anxiety and negative coping mediate this relationship. Methods: Data were derived from a large cross-sectional study conducted in Deyang City, China, which recruited 6,318 people aged 65 years and older. After excluding non-agricultural household registration and lack of key information, a total of 3,873 rural older adults were included in the analysis. Structural equation modelling (SEM) was used to analyze the relationship between childhood adversity and sleep quality, and the mediating role of anxiety and negative coping. Results: Approximately 48.15% of rural older adults had poor sleep quality, and older adults who were women, less educated, widowed, or living alone or had chronic illnesses had poorer sleep quality. Through structural equation model fitting, the total effect value of childhood adversity on sleep quality was 0.208 (95% CI: 0.146, 0.270), with a direct effect value of 0.066 (95% CI: 0.006, 0.130), accounting for 31.73% of the total effect; the total indirect effect value was 0.142 (95% CI: 0.119, 0.170), accounting for 68.27% of the total effect. The mediating effects of childhood adversity on sleep quality through anxiety and negative coping were significant, with effect values of 0.096 (95% CI: 0.078, 0.119) and 0.024 (95% CI: 0.014, 0.037), respectively. The chain mediating effect of anxiety and negative coping between childhood adversity and sleep quality was also significant, with an effect value of 0.022 (95% CI: 0.017, 0.028). Conclusions: Anxiety and negative coping were important mediating factors for rural older adult's childhood adversity and sleep quality. Background: While previous studies have indicated variability in distant metastatic potential among different mismatch repair (MMR) states in colorectal cancer (CRC), their findings remain inconclusive, especially considering potential differences across various ethnic backgrounds. Furthermore, the gene regulatory networks and the underlying mechanisms responsible for these variances in metastatic potential across MMR states have yet to be elucidated. Methods: We collected 2058 consecutive primary CRC samples from the South West of China and assessed the expression of MMR proteins (MLH1, MSH2, MSH6, and PMS2) using immunohistochemistry. To explore the inconsistencies between different MMR statuses and recurrence, we performed a meta‐analysis. To delve deeper, we employed Weighted Gene Co‐expression Network Analysis (WGCNA), ClueGo, and iRegulon, pinpointing gene expression networks and key regulatory molecules linked to metastasis and recurrence in CRC. Lastly, both univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses were applied to determine the impact of core regulatory molecules on metastasis. Results: Of the samples, 8.2% displayed deficient MMR (dMMR), with losses of MLH1 and PSM2 observed in 40.8% and 63.9%, respectively. A unique 24.3% isolated loss of PMS2 without concurrent metastasis was identified, a result that diverges from established literature. Additionally, our meta‐analysis further solidifies the reduced recurrence likelihood in dMMR CRC samples compared to proficient MMR (pMMR). Two gene expression networks tied to distant metastasis and recurrence were identified, with a majority of metastasis‐related genes located on chromosomes 8 and 18. An IRF1 positive feedback loop was discerned in the metastasis‐related network, and IRF1 was identified as a predictive marker for both recurrence‐free and distant metastasis‐free survival across multiple datasets. Conclusion: Geographical and ethnic factors might influence peculiarities in MMR protein loss. Our findings also highlight new gene expression networks and crucial regulatory molecules in CRC metastasis, enhancing our comprehension of the mechanisms driving distant metastasis. Fasting blood glucose (FBG) and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) are key indicators reflecting blood glucose control in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients. The purpose of this study is to establish a predictive model for blood glucose changes in T2DM patients after 3 months of treatment, achieving personalized treatment.A retrospective study was conducted on type 2 diabetes mellitus real-world medical data from 4 cities in Sichuan Province, China from January 2015 to December 2020. After data preprocessing, data inputting, data sampling, and feature screening, 16 kinds of machine learning methods were used to construct prediction models, and 5 prediction models with the best prediction performance were screened respectively. A total of 100,000 cases were included to establish the FBG model, and 2,169 cases were established to establish the HbA1c model. The best prediction model both of FBG and HbA1c finally obtained are realized by ensemble learning and modified random forest inputting, the AUC values are 0.819 and 0.970, respectively. The most important indicators of the FBG and HbA1c prediction model were FBG and HbA1c. Medication compliance, follow-up outcome, dietary habits, BMI, and waist circumference also had a greater impact on FBG levels. The prediction accuracy of the models of the two blood glucose control indicators is high and has certain clinical applicability.HbA1c and FBG are mutually important predictors, and there is a close relationship between them. Healthcare as a kind of service is closely related to human health, but its uneven distribution among regions could affect the equity of residents' access to the service and lead to the unbalanced development of healthcare levels. Therefore, this article establishes an integrated model by means of the stochastic frontier analysis method to evaluate regional healthcare efficiency and analyse its influencing factors. Specifically, the distribution and change trend of healthcare technical output (TO) efficiency and health output (HO) efficiency are investigated from the temporal and spatial perspectives, and then the influencing factors of the two types of healthcare efficiency are explored, respectively. Taking China as a case study, the results show that there are obvious regional differences in TO efficiency as a whole, where the values of the eastern and central regions are significantly higher, while the western and northeast regions have lower TO efficiency. Economic, social, and regional factors have a significant influence on both TO efficiency and HO efficiency, among which the impacts of population density on the two types of efficiency are opposite. Centipedegrass (Eremochloa ophiuroides (Munro.) Hack.) is a species originating in China and is an excellent warm-season turfgrass. As a native species in southern China, it is naturally distributed in the phosphorus-deficient and aluminum-toxic acid soil areas. It is important to research the molecular mechanism of centipedegrass responses to phosphorus-deficiency and/or aluminum-toxicity stress. Quantitative Real-Time PCR (qRT-PCR) is a common method for gene expression analysis, and the accuracy of qRT-PCR results depends heavily on the stability of internal reference genes. However, there are still no reported stable and effective reference genes for qRT-PCR analysis of target genes under the acid-soil-related stresses in different organs of centipedegrass. For scientific rigor, the gene used as a reference for any plant species and/or any stress conditions should be first systematically screened and evaluated. This study is the first to provide a group of reliable reference genes to quantify the expression levels of functional genes of Eremochloa ophiuroides under multiple stresses of P deficiency and/or aluminum toxicity. In this study, centipedegrass seedlings of the acid-soil-resistant strain 'E041' and acid-soil-sensitive strain 'E089' were used for qRT-PCR analysis. A total of 11 candidate reference genes (ACT, TUB, GAPDH, TIP41, CACS, HNR, EP, EF1α, EIF4α, PP2A and actin) were detected by qRT-PCR technology, and the stability of candidate genes was evaluated with the combination of four internal stability analysis software programs. The candidate reference genes exhibited differential stability of expression in roots, stems and leaves under phosphorus-deficiency and/or aluminum-toxicity stress. On the whole, the results showed that GAPDH, TIP41 and HNR were the most stable in the total of samples. In addition, for different tissues under various stresses, the selected reference genes were also different. CACS and PP2A were identified as two stable reference genes in roots through all three stress treatments (phosphate deficiency, aluminum toxicity, and the multiple stress treatment of aluminum toxicity and phosphate deficiency). Moreover, CACS was also stable as a reference gene in roots under each treatment (phosphate deficiency, aluminum toxicity, or multiple stresses of aluminum toxicity and phosphate deficiency). In stems under all three stress treatments, GAPDH and EIF4α were the most stable reference genes; for leaves, PP2A and TIP41 showed the two highest rankings in all three stress treatments. Finally, qRT-PCR analysis of the expression patterns of the target gene ALMT1 was performed to verify the selected reference genes. The application of the reference genes identified as internal controls for qRT-PCR analysis will enable accurate analysis of the target gene expression levels and expression patterns in centipedegrass under acid-soil-related stresses. The venting of methane from coal mining is China's main source of methane emissions. Accurate and up-to-date methane emission factors for coal mines are significant for reporting and controlling methane emissions in China. This study takes a typical coal mine in Shanxi Province as the research object and divides the coal mine into different zones based on the occurrence structure of methane in Shanxi Province. The methane emission characteristics of underground coal mine types and monitoring modes were studied. The emissions of methane from coal seams and ventilation methane of six typical coal mine groups in Shanxi Province were monitored. The measured methane concentration data were corrected by substituting them into the methane emission formula, and the future methane emissions were predicted by the coal production and methane emission factors. The results show that the number of methane mines and predicted reserves in Zone I of Shanxi Province are the highest. The average methane concentration emitted from coal and gas outburst mines is about 22.52%, and the average methane concentration emitted from high-gas mines is about 10.68%. The methane emissions from coal and gas outburst mines to the atmosphere account for about 64% of the total net methane emissions. The predicted methane emission factor for Shanxi coal mines is expected to increase from 8.859 m3/t in 2016 to 9.136 m3/t in 2025, and the methane emissions from Shanxi coal mines will reach 8.43 Tg in 2025. This study focuses on exploring equity among regions regarding public service delivery. An analytical framework is established to measure the level of public service delivery considering input (resources) and output (results), and an equity analysis is conducted from temporal and spatial perspectives. The results show that there are disparities in the level of public service delivery among regions in China (mainly due to inequality in resources), and within-region inequality has a greater influence on overall regional inequality than between-region inequality. Sarcoptic mange, a disease caused by the burrowing mite Sarcoptes scabiei, is globally endemic and an emerging threat to wildlife. Although many studies have shown that wildlife diseases play key roles in biodiversity conservation, knowledge about sarcoptic mange is still insufficient. In this study, we aim to improve the understanding of the impacts of sarcoptic mange on wildlife populations, the mechanisms involved in its eco‐epidemiology and the associated risks to public and ecosystem health by investigating mass death events in gorals and serows in the Qinling Mountains. We conducted interviews with practitioners and local people in the central Qinling Mountains. From the same locations, we collected 24 cutaneous samples from various animals and surveillance data from infrared cameras. Pathological, parasitological and microbiological examinations of the samples were performed. Mite‐induced cutaneous lesions, mites and eggs were observed in samples from dead gorals and one dead serow but not in other species. Molecular analysis confirmed the mites to be S. scabiei and shared the same cox 1 genotype. The data obtained from the interviews and infrared cameras indicated that the death of wildlife was related to sarcoptic mange infection and that there had been a decrease in the goral population since the outbreak of the disease. We confirmed that sarcoptic mange was the major cause of the mass death events and may have spread from the western to eastern Qinling Mountains. The canopy water storage capacity of vegetation has great significance for the hydrological cycle. We used the Pereira regression analysis method, scale-up method, and simulated rainfall method to determine canopy water storage capacity from 2014 to 2018. The Pereira regression analysis was affected mainly by the seasonal variation in the leaf area index and the observation method of throughfall. The canopy water storage capacity was 0.68 mm and 0.72 mm for C. korshinskii and H. rhamnoides, respectively. The canopy water storage capacity of C. korshinskii and H. rhamnoides was 0.73 mm and 0.76 mm, respectively, using the scale-up method. The scale-up method showed that water storage capacity per area of the canopy components was in the order of branches (0.31 mm) > leaves (0.27 mm) > trunks (0.15 mm) for C. korshinskii, and trunks (0.33 mm) > branches (0.29 mm) > leaves (0.14 mm) for H. rhamnoides. We used eight simulated rainfall intensities to determine the canopy water storage capacity for C. korshinskii and H. rhamnoides, which was 0.63 mm and 0.59 mm, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Forest degradation and mortality have been widely reported in the context of increasingly significant global climate change. As the country with the largest total tree plantation area globally, China has a great responsibility in forestry management to cope with climate change effectively. Mongolian Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica) was widely introduced from its natural sites in China into several other sandy land areas for establishing shelterbelt in the Three-North Shelter Forest Program, scoring outstanding achievements in terms of wind-breaking and sand-fixing. Mongolian Scots pine plantations in China cover a total area of ~800,000 hectares, with the eldest trees having >60 years. However, plantation trees have been affected by premature senescence in their middle-age stages (i.e., dieback, growth decline, and death) since the 1990s. This phenomenon has raised concerns about the suitability of Mongolian Scots pine to sandy habitats and the rationality for further afforestation, especially under the global climate change scenario. Fortunately, dieback has occurred only sporadically at specific sites and in certain years and has not spread to other regions in northern China; nevertheless, global climate change has become increasingly significant in that region. These observations reflect the strong drought resistance and adaptability of Mongolian Scots pines. In this review, we summarized the most recent findings on the ecohydrological attributes of Mongolian Scots pine during its adaptation to both fragile habitats and climate change. Five main species-specific strategies (i.e., opportunistic water absorb strategy, hydraulic failure risk avoidance strategy, water conservation strategy, functional traits adjustment strategy, rapid regeneration strategy) were summarized, providing deep insights into the tree–water relationship. The diversity of plant water use patterns among species and ecosystems is a matter of widespread debate. In this study, Chinese pine (Pinus tabuliformis , CP) and Mongolian Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica , MP), which is co-exist in the shelterbelt plantations in the Horqin Sandyland in northern China, were chosen for comparison of water use traits by monitoring xylem sap flow alongside recordings of the associated environmental factors over four growing seasons. Continuous sap flux density measurements were converted into crown projected area transpiration intensity (Tr) and canopy stomatal conductance (Gs). The results indicated that MP showed a higher canopy transpiration intensity than in CP , with Tr daily means (±standard deviation) of 0.84 ± 0.36 and 0.79 ± 0.43 mm⋅d–1, respectively (p = 0.07). However, the inter-annual variability of daily Tr in MP was not significant, varying only approximately a 1.1-fold (p = 0.29), while inter-annual variation was significant for CP , with 1.24-fold variation (p < 0.01). In particular, the daily mean Tr value for CP was approximately 1.7-times higher than that of MP under favorable soil moisture conditions, with values for relative extractable soil water within the 0–1.0 m soil layer (REW) being above 0.4. However, as the soil dried out, the value of Tr for CP decreased more sharply, falling to only approximately 0.5-times the value for MP when REW fell to < 0.2. The stronger sensitivity of Tr and/or Gs to REW, together with the more sensitive response of Gs to VPD in CP , confirms that CP exhibits less conservation of soil water utilization but features a stronger ability to regulate water use. Air pollution and labor mobility are two important social phenomena associated with China's pursuit of high-quality development. First, this paper matches China's urban characteristics data with China Migrants Dynamic Survey in 2017. Then, the conditional logit model is used to empirically investigate the effects and heterogeneity of air pollution on employment location choice. Finally, combined with the concept of risk perception in psychology, this paper explores the underlying mechanisms. The main results are as follows: (1) Air pollution has a significant negative effect on employment location choice of labor force. Specifically, a 1 μg/m3 increase in PM 2.5 concentration in a city can result in a significant decrease of 0.917 percentage points in the probability that the labor force will choose to work in that city. (2) There are heterogeneous characteristics of the negative impact of air pollution on employment location choice. Those with higher education level, outdoor work, relatively higher individual income, and 1–2 minor children are more sensitive to air pollution when choosing employment sites. Background: Doctors play an important role in smoking control. This study aimed to assess doctors' smoking control knowledge, attitudes and practices to help doctors raise awareness of smoking control assistance.Methods: This cross-sectional study recruited 1046 doctors from Shandong Province, China, by using multistage sampling. Participants' information was collected by questionnaire. Pearson's χ2 test and Fisher's exact probability method were used to compare the distributions of categorical variables between/among groups.Results: Among the participants, 14.7% were current smokers. Approximately 50.3% of participants had heard of smoking cessation drugs and 59.2% of participants thought that low-tar and low-nicotine cigarettes were as harmful to health as common cigarettes. Approximately 98.2 and 60.9% of participants agreed that smoking was related to lung cancer and male sexual dysfunction, respectively. Although 72.0% of participants believed that doctors should actively provide smoking cessation assistance, only 58.1% of participants considered that doctors should be responsible for providing smoking cessation assistance. Similarly, 85.2% of participants often asked about the smoking history of patients or their family members, while only 4.9% of participants had prescribed smoking cessation drugs for patients. Pediatricians had a higher proportion of "Agree" responses to the assessment items than doctors in other departments.Conclusions: The results showed that doctors in Shandong Province did not have sufficient knowledge of smoking control. Slightly more than half of doctors thought that providing smoking cessation assistance was their responsibility. Only a few participants had prescribed smoking cessation drugs. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to investigate the conditions under which working with an incumbent downstream competitor could be a beneficial strategy for upstream firms as the case of the relationship between banks and third-party payment providers. Design/methodology/approach: Using a game model, this study considers a market with two upstream firms (banks) and two downstream firms (third-party payment providers). One downstream firm is an incumbent that poses a competitive threat to the upstream market, and the other downstream firm does not. Findings: The results show that the optimal decision for banks depends on the number of loyal users the incumbent third-party payment providers and banks have. When the bank has more loyal users than the competitive third-party provider to a certain level, it would terminate cooperation with the provider; otherwise, the bank would maintain cooperation. This is true whether the duopoly banks are symmetrical or asymmetrical. Originality/value: This study makes contribution to the theory of co-opetition lies in the fact that it examines a special case of competition and cooperation between vertical enterprises in the bank context. This study investigates how the upstream firms do when threatened by a downstream firm while the upstream firms have other options. This study also contributes to bank marketing theory through providing explanations for some of the incomprehensible cooperation in China's payment market, which is characterized by consumer loyalty. This study extends previous new-entry competition for banks by differentiating between incumbent and new-entry downstream firms. Vegetation restoration was conducted by the Chinese government over the past decades to reduce soil and water loss on the Chinese Loess Plateau. However, vegetation restoration was very blind in plant species selection and had no guidance. Field measurements were conducted from 2009 to 2014 to analyze the influence of land-use conversions from croplands to pastures, native grasslands and planted trees, shrubs and on runoff, soil water dynamics and water stresses in the semi-arid loess hilly area. Our research has led to the following major findings: (1) The soil water stored decreased from 2009 to 2014 among all land cover types. The soil water replenishment by rainfall during rainy seasons was not sufficient to fully recharge the soil water storage. Vegetation restoration by shrub could retain more soil water than other land cover types; (2) The ratio of ET/P (evapotranspiration/precipitation) ranked from high to low was Grassland (1.31) > Shrubland (1.29) > Cropland (1.28) > Alfalfa (1.26) > Woodland (1.20). The ET/P ratio of the pine plantation was the lowest among the five land cover types; (3) Woodlands and shrublands showed the higher infiltration rates and the wetting fronts of croplands and shrublands could reach greater depths than woodland and grassland. Abstract To explore a sustainable and efficient treatment approach for organic acid fermentation wastewater, two microbial fuel cells (MFCs) systems inoculated with wastewater or domesticated microbial community were constructed in this study. Compared with the MFC inoculated with domesticated microbial community, the MFC inoculated with wastewater not only showed higher power density (543.75 mW m−2) and coulomb efficiency (22.10%), but also exhibited higher removal rates of chemical oxygen demand (75.59%), total nitrogen (76.15%), and ammonia nitrogen (83.23%), meeting the demand of wastewater discharge standard of China. Sequencing analysis revealed that the MFC inoculated with wastewater were richer in microbial community, and some bacteria such as Saprospiraceae and Caldilineaceae were beneficial for its good performance. In contrast, the microbial community of the MFC inoculated with domesticated microbial community was relatively simple. Background: Little is known about the characteristics of people with and without schizophrenia who have been charged with homicide in China.Aims and Research Question: Our research question was what differences are there between alleged homicide offenders with and without psychosis?Method: All archival records of alleged homicide cases referred for assessment to the West China Forensic Central Medical Service during 1998-2006 were retrieved. The centre serves a large catchment area in the mainly rural province of Sichuan. A random 20% of cases with schizophrenia and all cases without psychosis were selected for comparison. Demographic, criminological and mental health data were extracted from the records, and violence was rated by using the Violence Risk Scale (Chinese version).Results: The two groups differed significantly in age, education, occupation, marital status and relationships to victim. The estimated risk of reoffending was higher in the schizophrenia group than the non-psychotic group, even after controlling for demographic differences. Despite many individuals reporting long histories of mental illness, about 40% of those with schizophrenia had never had any psychiatric treatment and less than 4% were in treatment at the time of the alleged homicide.Conclusions: The tendency for homicidal people with schizophrenia to be older, less educated and more socially isolated than their non-psychotic peers is similar to experience in Western countries, but the apparently higher risk scale scores of the Chinese schizophrenia group and their greater tendency to attack strangers are different. The lack of reported previous engagement with mental health services by a clearly ill and risky group of people is a likely explanation. Similar rural problems compared with better served urban areas have been reported in the Chuvash Republic. The case for better rural mental health services seems strong. The Poyang Lake, the largest freshwater lake in China, is subject to drastic seasonal hydrological fluctuations due to the global climate change and human activities, resulting in the unclear impact of soil bacterial communities undergoing severe drought pressure. To elucidate this, soil samples were collected in Phragmites, Carex, and Phalaris, and were incubated in the laboratory under three moisture levels: 30% WHC (maximum water-hold capacity) representing severe drought, 50% WHC representing moderate drought, and 80% WHC representing suitable moisture conditions. Soil bacterial communities were profiled by the 16 S rRNA gene using the Illumina high-throughput sequencing technique. The results showed that the Shannon–Wiener index of bacterial communities decreased with the decrease of soil moisture. The Chao1 index decreased with the decrease of soil moisture in the Carex and Phalaris zone soils, while the index first decreased and then increased in the Phragmites zone soil. The Shannon–Wiener index was significantly different among the three dry-wet conditions (p = 0.017), whereas the Chao1 index was not (p = 0.813). Drought altered the relative abundance of different bacterial phyla. With the decrease of soil moisture, the relative abundance of Actinobacteria increased, whereas the relative abundance of Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi, Acidobacteria, and Nitrospirae decreased. LEfSe analysis showed that the number of differential species in the soil of different vegetation zones (n = 57) was significantly higher than the number of differential species under different drought conditions (n = 13). Overall, the difference of soil properties in different vegetation zones has a greater effect on the bacterial community structure than that of different drought conditions in Poyang Lake wetland. Background Venous thromboembolism ( VTE) is a serious complication in patients with lung cancer. The benefit of chemotherapy for lung cancer patients with VTE remains unknown. This study was conducted to elucidate the efficacy and safety of chemotherapy for advanced non-small cell lung cancer ( NSCLC) in patients with VTE. Methods Newly diagnosed patients with advanced (i.e. stage IIIB and IV) NSCLC with VTE who received systemic chemotherapy were studied. Response rates, progression-free survival ( PFS), overall survival ( OS), and toxicity were retrospectively analyzed. Results In this study, 21 patients who received chemotherapy plus anticoagulation therapy between December 2009 and February 2011 were included. The objective response and disease control rates within the first regimen were 14.29% (3/21) and 76.19 %(16/21), respectively. The median PFS, one-year survival rate, and median OS were 5.50 months, 33.30%, and 8.70 months, respectively. The main grade 3/4 toxicities observed included neutropenia (28.57%), nausea 4 (19.05%), and anemia 2 (9.52%). Major bleeding was not observed. Conclusion Chemotherapy for newly diagnosed patients with advanced NSCLC and VTE was feasible and had acceptable toxicity; however, the survival of these patients remained inferior to that of patients without VTE. • Empirical models were applied to quantify solar radiation and photovoltaic power. • A large network of observations was used to provide forcing inputs. • The newly developed empirical model can accurately estimate global solar radiation. • The annual photovoltaic power exhibited a significantly declining trend. • Western China is an optimal location for solar photovoltaic power plants. Global solar radiation (R s) is a key parameter for determining the energy yields of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. However, long-term R s data are not available in most regions of China, impeding the management and development of PV systems. In this study, a novel model for estimating R s was developed and coupled with a PV power model and inverse distance weighting model to generate high-resolution R s and PV power data over China. A large network of observations was used to provide forcing inputs (daily observations from 1961 to 2018, from 2123 meteorological stations). The spatiotemporal patterns of R s and PV power in China were further quantified. The results indicate that the newly developed R s model accurately represents the decadal variability of R s in China during 1961–2018. Annual potential PV power exhibited a significantly decreasing trend from 1961 to 2018, with a significant decrease from 1961 to 1991 (−0.35 ± 0.06 kWh m−2 yr−1, p < 0.01) and non-significant decrease from 1992 to 2018 (−0.14 ± 0.12 kWh m−2 yr−1, p > 0.05). Owing to air quality improvements in the future, the potential PV power may increase over China, leading to large economic benefits. Western China is favored for its abundant PV power, whereas central and eastern China are the least favorable for PV power generation. Thus, the western part of China, with its excellent geographical potential, is an optimal location for the installation of solar PV power plants. Our findings provide practical information to solar energy industries, and can help in energy structure transitions, meeting the energy demand and contributing to carbon neutrality. Objective: Inflammation-related factors have been shown to play a significant role throughout pregnancy. In this study, we aimed to explore the relationships between selected inflammatory cytokines and gestational diabetes (GDM) in Chinese pregnant women. Design and methods: This was a 1:1 matched case–control study that included 200 pairs of subjects in the second trimester and 130 pairs of subjects in the third trimester. Serum levels of nerve growth factor (NGF), Interleukin-6 (IL-6), leptin, Interleukin-8 (IL-8), monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and Interleukin-1beta (IL-1β) were measured by enzyme immunoassay. The associations of these inflammatory factors with metabolic parameters were analysed. Results: In the second trimester, GDM patients had higher NGF levels and lower IL-8 levels than did normal controls (P < 0.001 and P = 0.015, respectively). However, in the third trimester, only lower leptin levels were observed in the GDM group (P = 0.031). Additionally, in the second trimester, NGF levels were not only positively associated with fasting, 1-h and 2-h glucose levels and the area under curve of glucose, but also positively related to insulin sensitivity and secretion, as suggested by fasting insulin, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and homeostasis model assessment index of β-cell secretion (HOMA-β) (all P < 0.05). Moreover, IL-6 and leptin levels were positively correlated with HOMA-IR and HOMA-β, and TNF-α levels were positively related to HOMA-IR (all P < 0.05). Except for the relationships between NGF and HOMA-β and TNF-α and HOMA-IR, the other correlations still existed even after adjusting for confounding factors (all P < 0.05). Conclusion: In addition to the positive associations of IL-6 and leptin with insulin resistance and secretion, NGF was higher in the GDM patients and strongly linked to glucose metabolism, insulin resistance and pancreatic β cell function in Chinese pregnant women in the second trimester. In the context of anthropogenic impacts on riverine ecosystems globally, understanding the response of bacterioplankton to anthropogenic stress is important for human and environmental health. Bacterioplankton communities are critical for maintaining ecosystem stability, but little is known about their co-occurrence networks and assembly processes in intense human-impacted plains river networks. By applying cooccurrence networks, variance partitioning, and null model analysis, we investigated the mechanisms of interaction and assembly of abundant (>1% relative abundance) and rare (<0.01%) taxa at 32 sites in river networks along an urbanization gradient (urban, suburban, and agricultural areas). Our results show that interactions between the bacterioplankton communities were more complex in urban areas than in other areas, and that environmental factors (primarily fluoride, nitrate nitrogen, and dissolved organic carbon) as well as spatial factors (i.e., Moran's Eigenvector Maps) explained most of the variation in bacterioplankton communities. Abundant taxa showed stronger spatial turnover than rare taxa, indicating that spatial factors played a greater role in the assemblage of abundant taxa. Land use types, especially impervious surfaces, had a unique influence on rare taxa, but contributed less to community change than other factors. In addition, rare taxa were mainly influenced by deterministic processes, whereas abundant taxa were more influenced by stochastic processes, especially in agricultural areas. These findings suggest that the shares of abundant and rare taxa mediate disturbances in local environmental conditions in anthropogenic river network areas, while deterministic processes play a greater role in shaping bacterioplankton communities. Overall, our study provides important insights for environmental monitoring and management in areas of intense human activity, emphasizing the need to consider both abundant and rare taxa when assessing the impact of human activities on riverine ecosystems. The drilling mud from in situ leaching uranium mining is a type of low-radioactivity waste that contains natural nuclides and other harmful substances. In order to determine whether the drilling mud can meet the requirements of radioactive exemption management standards, field investigations and data simulations were conducted in this study. Two typical uranium mines were selected for onsite investigations. Drilling mud from different layers (i.e., the upper covering layer and ore-bearing layer) and from different stages (e.g., logging stage mud, drilling expansion stage mud, and mixed mud) was sampled. For each sample, the 238U and 226Ra concentrations of the solid components and the U and 226Ra concentrations of the supernatant were analyzed. The results revealed that the highest 238U and 226Ra concentrations of the solid components were 4122 Bq/kg and 4077 Bq/kg, while the 238U and 226Ra concentrations of the mixed drilling mud were all less than 300 Bq/kg. A radioactivity estimation model was established for scenario analysis. Adequate infectious disease-specific health literacy (IDSHL) is of benefit to residents in dealing with infectious diseases. This study aimed to investigate the methods by which residents acquire knowledge about infectious disease prevention and control (IDPC knowledge) so as to find effective health education methods used to improve residents' IDSHL level. In 2022, a cross-sectional study was conducted in Shandong Province, China. Participants were recruited from rural areas by multistage sampling. The IDPC knowledge cognitive questionnaire, as a reliable and valid tool, was applied to data collection and to investigate the participants' IDPC knowledge. Chi-square analysis was utilized to analyze the differences in possession level of IDSHL between different subgroups. The relationship between demographic factors and methods to acquire IDPC knowledge was also examined by chi-square analysis. The possession rate of adequate IDSHL among the total 2283 participants was 31.80%. There was a significant association between IDSHL level and socio-demographic factors, including age (P < .001), sex (P = .02), education (P < .001), occupation (P < .001), annual family income (P < .001), whether to use smartphones (P < .001), whether to browse WeChat on smartphones (P < .001), and whether to browse apps on smartphones except WeChat (P < .001). Univariate analysis showed that whether to adopt specific methods, including television (P = .02), WeChat on smartphones (P < .001), propaganda of infectious disease prevention and control (P < .001), and doctor's advice (P < .001) to acquire IDPC knowledge had significant associations with IDSHL level. Age (P < .001), education (P < .05), occupation (P < .05), and annual family income (P < .01) were associated with methods to acquire IDPC knowledge. The rural residents' adequate IDSHL in Shandong Province, China, was not optimistic. Background: The health effects of particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter ≤2.5 μm (PM 2.5 ) might differ depending on compositional variations. Little is known about the joint effect of PM 2.5 constituents on metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease (CVD). This study aims to evaluate the combined associations of PM 2.5 components with CVD, identify the most detrimental constituent, and further quantify the mediation effect of metabolic syndrome., Methods and Results: A total of 14 427 adults were included in a cohort study in Sichuan, China, and were followed to obtain the diagnosis of CVD until 2021. Metabolic syndrome was defined by the simultaneous occurrence of multiple metabolic disorders measured at baseline. The concentrations of PM 2.5 chemical constituents within a 1-km 2 grid were derived based on satellite- and ground-based detection methods. Cox proportional hazard models showed that black carbon, organic matter (OM), nitrate, ammonium, chloride, and sulfate were positively associated with CVD risks, with hazard ratios (HRs) ranging from 1.24 to 2.11 (all P <0.05). Quantile g-computation showed positive associations with 4 types of CVD risks (HRs ranging from 1.48 to 2.25, all P <0.05). OM and chloride had maximum weights for CVD risks. Causal mediation analysis showed that the positive association of OM with total CVD was mediated by metabolic syndrome, with a mediation proportion of 1.3% (all P <0.05)., Conclusions: Long-term exposure to PM 2.5 chemical constituents is positively associated with CVD risks. OM and chloride appear to play the most responsible role in the positive associations between PM 2.5 and CVD. OM is probably associated with CVD through metabolic-related pathways.

Aims: To test whether vision impairment and major ophthalmic conditions are predictive of frailty., Methods: The analysis included 5321 participants aged 60-95 years at baseline from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. Participants were enrolled in 2011 and followed up in 2013, and 2015 through a face-to-face interview. Distance/near vision impairment was defined by reporting poor eyesight and reporting excellent, very good, good or fair eyesight was used as the reference. A history of cataract surgery and glaucoma were also self-reported. Frailty was defined as the presence of ≥3 of the five components of the Fried phenotype: weakness, slowness, exhaustion, inactivity and shrinking., Results: In the cross-sectional analysis, both near (odds ratio [OR] (95% confidence interval [CI]): 1.62 (1.30 to 2.00)) and distance (1.59 (1.30 to 1.96)) vision impairment was associated with a higher prevalence of frailty independent of confounders. In the longitudinal analysis, the multivariable-adjusted OR (95% CI) for incident frailty associated with glaucoma, distance vision impairment, near vision impairment and vision problem was 3.41 (1.46 to 7.99), 1.59 (1.17 to 2.17), 1.62 (1.17 to 2.23) and 2.11 (1.41 to 3.15), respectively. Vision problem was associated with decreased handgrip strength (β (95% CI): -1.47 (-2.20 to -0.75) kg) during follow-up. Background: Multimorbidity is better prevented in younger ages than in older ages. This study aims to identify the differences in comorbidity patterns in middle-aged inpatients from China and the United Kingdom (UK)., Methods: We utilized 184,133 and 180,497 baseline hospitalization records in middle-aged populations (40-59 years) from Shaanxi, China, and UK Biobank. Logistic regression was used to calculate odds ratios and P values for 43,110 unique comorbidity patterns in Chinese inpatients and 21,026 unique comorbidity patterns in UK inpatients. We included the statistically significant (P values adjusted by Bonferroni correction) and common comorbidity patterns (the pattern with prevalence > 1/10,000 in each dataset) and employed network analysis to construct multimorbidity networks and compare feature differences in multimorbidity networks for Chinese and UK inpatients, respectively. We defined hub diseases as diseases having the top 10 highest number of unique comorbidity patterns in the multimorbidity network., Results: We reported that 57.12% of Chinese inpatients had multimorbidity, substantially higher than 30.39% of UK inpatients. The complete multimorbidity network for Chinese inpatients consisted of 1367 comorbidities of 341 diseases and was 2.93 × more complex than that of 467 comorbidities of 215 diseases in the UK. In males, the complexity of the multimorbidity network in China was 2.69 × more than their UK counterparts, while the ratio was 2.63 × in females. Comorbidities associated with hub diseases represented 68.26% of comorbidity frequencies in the complete multimorbidity network in Chinese inpatients and 55.61% in UK inpatients. Essential hypertension, dyslipidemia, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and gastritis and duodenitis were the hub diseases in both populations. The Chinese inpatients consistently demonstrated a higher frequency of comorbidities related to circulatory and endocrine/nutritional/metabolic diseases. In the UK, aside from these comorbidities, comorbidities related to digestive and genitourinary diseases were also prevalent, particularly the latter among female inpatients., Conclusions: Chinese inpatients exhibit higher multimorbidity prevalence and more complex networks compared to their UK counterparts. Multimorbidity with circulatory and endocrine/nutritional/metabolic diseases among both Chinese and UK inpatients necessitates tailored surveillance, prevention, and intervention approaches. Background: Healthy China is a nationwide health strategy aiming at improving health from diverse dimensions, and strengthening high-quality assessment is essential for its stimulation. However, there is limited evidence in the surveillance of the actual performance of the initiative at regional levels. This study innovatively proposes a two-step surveillance process which comprehensively monitors Healthy China Initiative based on regional realities, thus provides guidance for policymaking., Methods: A flexible indicator system was firstly developed basing on Delphi survey and focus group discussions. And then the Analysis Hierarchical Process and the TOPSIS method were used to determine the weights of indicators and calculate comprehensive indexes as the surveillance outcomes. A pilot study was conducted in a typical area in China to verify the applicability of the process., Results: Following the surveillance process and basing on the implementation of Healthy China Initiative in the target region, an indicator system comprised of 5 domains and 23 indicators with weights was first developed specifically for the pilot area. Then 1848 interagency data of the study area were collected from 8 provincial institutions/departments to calculate the indexes and ranks of the five domains which were health level, healthy living, disease prevention and control, health service, and healthy environment. The outcomes showed that Healthy China Initiative in the pilot area had been constantly improved since the strategy proposed, while there were still issues to be tackled such as the deficient monitoring mechanisms and unevenly development progress., Conclusions: This study proposed a pragmatic surveillance process with indicators which could be tailored for specific context of target regions and produce meaningful surveillance outcomes to inform decision-making for policymakers, and also provided a theoretical foundation as well as empirical evidence for further health strategies and plannings assessment studies., (© 2023. Plant biomass represents a vast resource of carbon. In China, it is estimated that 1 billion tons of biomass is available each year. The conversion of these biomass resources into bioethanol or other bio-based chemicals, if fully commercialized, may reduce at least 200 million tons of crude oil import. Therefore, bioethanol and bulk chemicals are the core components of the biomanufacturing using plant biomass as carbon sources. Since the foundation of Tianjin Institute of Industrial Biotechnology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (TIB, CAS), we have proposed a strategy of "two replacements and one upgrade". Utilizing renewable carbon resources instead of non-renewable petrochemical resources to produce bulk chemicals is included in our strategy. It is a long-term effort for TIB to develop plant biomass biomanufacturing to produce renewable chemicals. Continuous and systematic research was carried out in these two fields, and significant progress has been made in the past 10 years since the foundation of TIB. Here we review the progress of TIB in this field, mainly focusing on fungal system, including the mechanism of cellulose degradation by filamentous fungi and the strategy of consolidated bioprocessing of biomass. Based on this, malic acid, fuel ethanol and other bulk chemicals were produced through one-step conversion of biomass. Besides, the commercial processes for production of bulk chemicals such as succinic and lactic acid from renewable carbon resources, which were developed by TIB, were also be discussed. These examples clearly demonstrated that bulk chemicals can be obtained from biomass instead of from petroleum. Research on plant biomass biotransformation and renewable chemicals production in TIB has provided an alternative route for the development of low-carbon bioeconomy in China, and will contribute to the goal of carbon neutralization of China.

Background: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a serious mental health condition that is triggered by a terrifying event. We aimed to investigate the occurrence and risk factors of PTSD among discharged COVID-19 patients., Methods: This study included 144 discharged COVID-19 patients. PTSD was assessed by using validated cut-offs of the impact of event scale-revised (IES-R, score ≥25). All patients completed a detailed questionnaire survey, and clinical parameters were routinely measured in the hospital. Binary logistic regression models were applied to identify factors associated with PTSD., Results: Of the 144 participants with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19, the occurrence of PTSD was 16.0%. In multivariable analyses, age above 40 years (adjusted OR [95% CI], 5.19 [2.17-12.32]), female sex (adjusted OR [95% CI], 7.82 [3.18-18.21]), current smoker (adjusted OR [95% CI], 6.72 [3.23-15.26]), and ≥3 involved pulmonary lobes (adjusted OR [95% CI], 5.76 [1.19-15.71]) were significantly associated with a higher risk of PTSD. Conversely, history of hypertension and serum hemoglobin levels were significantly associated with a lower risk of PTSD with adjusted ORs (95% CI) of 0.37 (0.12-0.87) and 0.91 (0.82-0.96), respectively., Conclusion: Old age, gender (being female), current smoking, bacterial pneumonia, and ≥3 involved pulmonary lobes were associated with an increased occurrence of PTSD among discharged COVID-19 patients., (© 2022 The Authors. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of workplace violence against health care workers, to explore the combined association of work stress, psychological job demands, and social approval with workplace violence and their respective mechanisms among health care workers. Methods: Using data from the Chinese Sixth National Health Service Survey (NHSS) in 2018 conducted among 1,371 health care workers in Sichuan province of China. A self-administered structured questionnaire was used to collect data on health care workers' socio-demographic and work-related characteristics, work stress, psychological job demands, social approval, and workplace violence. We used structural equation modeling (SEM) to test the hypothesized relationship among the variables. Results: The results showed that a total of 77.0% health care workers were exposed to workplace violence. Work stress was directly related to workplace violence (β = 2.167, 95%CI: 1.707, 2.627), while psychological job demands and social approval had indirect associations with workplace violence via work stress [β = 0.427, 95%CI: 0.297, 0.557; β = -0.787, 95%CI: (-0.941)-(-0.633)]. Both psychological job demands (β = 0.197, 95%CI: 0.139, 0.255) and social approval [β = -0.346, 95%CI: (-0.399)-(-0.294)] had direct associations with work stress, while social approval had direct association with psychological job demands [β = -0.085, 95%CI: (-0.136)-(-0.034)]. Psychological job demands mediated the relationship between social approval and work stress. Objective: To assess the occupational injuries and psychological support received by nurses and to investigate the relationship between the two., Method: This was a nation-wide cross-sectional study of nurses working across 1858 hospitals in China. Data were collected using an online structured, self-administered questionnaire between 2016 and 2017., Results: Nearly half of respondents had experienced aggressive behavior from patients or their attendants; 13.4% respondents had experienced aggressive behavior on more than three occasions. 78.96% respondents had experienced needle-stick injuries and 51.22% had experienced psychological trauma. 20.5% respondents believed that hospitals do not pay any attention to occupational safety. 86.1% respondents expressed the need for little or moderate psychological support. Nurses who had experienced aggressive behavior expressed a greater need for psychological support. Nurses working at hospitals that adequately addressed the occupational safety issues expressed the lowest need for psychological support., Conclusion: We found a high prevalence of psychological stress and occupational injuries among nurses. Nursing managers need to address this issue and implement interventions to prevent and reduce injuries.

Objective: Based on the accelerometer, the validity of the international physical activity questionnaire long version(IPAQ-L) and Bouchard diary were evaluated to measure the daily physical activity of Chinese adults aged 18-59 years old., Methods: A total of 200 Chinese adults were recruited in Yinzhou District of Ningbo City in 2019, including 78 males and 122 females, the three age groups 18-29, 30-49, 50 and above accounted for 19. 5%, 61. 5% and 18. 0%, respectively. The volunteers wore Actigraph WGT3 x-BT three-dimensional accelerometer for 3 days, and completed the 3 consecutive days& apos; Bouchard diary and the IPAQ-L. The physical activity energy expenditure(PAEE), sedentary inactivity time, light physical activity time(LPA) and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity time(MVPA) measured by the three tools were estimated respectively. Spearman analysis was used to analyze the correlation, the Friedman test and the Bland-Altman plot were used to test the homogeneity of the three method., Results: 196 volunteers were included in this study. The correlation coefficients of PAEE between IPAQ and diary and accelerometer were 0. 32 and 0. 58, respectively, the correlation coefficients of sedentary behavior were 0. 17, 0. 25, and LPA time was 0. 33, and the estimated IPAQ for MVPA time better than diary. The difference test result showed that, except for IPAQ in the measurement of MVPA, there was no statistical difference from the accelerometer measurement result(P=0. 684), and the difference between other estimated values and the accelerometer measurement result was statistically significant(P& lt; 0. 01), Bland-Altman plot result showed that the diary and IPAQ had good consistency in the measurement of PAEE and IPAQ in the estimation of MVPA time, but there was an overestimation in PAEE. In addition, IPAQ had poor validity in measuring sedentary behavior and LPA., Conclusion: IPAQ and Bouchard diary have better validity in evaluating PAEE, and the diary is better than IPAQ. IPAQ has better validity in evaluating MVPA time, but has poor validity in estimating sedentary behavior and LPA time.

Introduction: Gallbladder cancer (GBC), the sixth most common gastrointestinal tract cancer, poses a significant disease burden in China. However, no national representative data are available on the clinical characteristics, treatment and prognosis of GBC in the Chinese population., Methods and Analysis: The Chinese Research Group of Gallbladder Cancer (CRGGC) study is a multicentre retrospective registry cohort study. Clinically diagnosed patient with GBC will be identified from 1 January 2008 to December, 2019, by reviewing the electronic medical records from 76 tertiary and secondary hospitals across 28 provinces in China. Patients with pathological and radiological diagnoses of malignancy, including cancer in situ, from the gallbladder and cystic duct are eligible, according to the National Comprehensive Cancer Network 2019 guidelines. Patients will be excluded if GBC is the secondary diagnosis in the discharge summary. The demographic characteristics, medical history, physical examination results, surgery information, pathological data, laboratory examination results and radiology reports will be collected in a standardised case report form. By May 2021, approximately 6000 patient with GBC will be included. The clinical follow-up data will be updated until 5 years after the last admission for GBC of each patient. The study aimed (1) to depict the clinical characteristics, including demographics, pathology, treatment and prognosis of patient with GBC in China; (2) to evaluate the adherence to clinical guidelines of GBC and (3) to improve clinical practice for diagnosing and treating GBC and provide references for policy-makers., Ethics and Dissemination: The protocol of the CRGGC has been approved by the Committee for Ethics of Xinhua Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine (SHEC-C-2019-085). Objective: The presence of low-grade albuminuria (LGA) suggested that the pathophysiology of vascular dysfunction has been initiated. Clear evidence supports a role for osteocalcin in energy metabolism and a great incidence of pathological cardiovascular changes. The observational community-based study aims to examine the association of osteocalcin with LGA, which may provide new insight into potential involvement of osteocalcin in cardiovascular diseases., Methods: A total of 1951 adults [58.37 (53.34-63.13) years, 41.3% men] from Shanghai were enrolled. LGA was defined as a urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR) < 30 mg/g. Serum osteocalcin was measured using an electrochemiluminescence immunoassay., Results: Serum osteocalcin level in men decreased with increasing UACR after adjusting for potential covariates (p = 0.045); however, the adjusted association disappeared in women (p = 0.258). Linear regression analysis showed that osteocalcin was a negative variable of UACR in men (standardized β = -0.074, p = 0.030), particularly prominent in non-hyperglycemic, non-hypertensive men, even regardless of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) (60 ≤ eGFR <90 mL/min/1.73 m 2 , standardized β =-0.422, p = 0.004; ≥ 90 mL/min/1.73 m 2 , standardized β = -0.167, p = 0.037)., Conclusion: After controlling for confounders, serum osteocalcin level was independently associated with LGA in men, which suggested that osteocalcin was closely related with atherosclerosis and vascular dysfunction.

Background: Our study examined whether osteocalcin contributed to identifying carotid intima-media thickness (C-IMT) over the atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk score., Methods: We recruited 618 middle-aged and elderly men from communities in Shanghai. Serum osteocalcin levels were determined using an electrochemiluminescence immunoassay. C-IMT was measured by ultrasonography., Results: The study included 245 men with low ASCVD risk and 373 men with moderate-to-high ASCVD risk. Serum osteocalcin levels were lower in the moderate-to-high risk vs. low risk men (p=0.042). Multivariate stepwise regression analysis showed that body mass index (BMI) and glycated hemoglobin were predictors for reduced osteocalcin levels (both p<0.001). Among all subjects, the proportion with an elevated C-IMT was higher in the low-osteocalcin group than in the high-osteocalcin group (p=0.042), and the significance of this result was greater when considering only subjects with a moderate-to-high ASCVD risk (p=0.011). The recognition rate of elevated C-IMT was superior with both low osteocalcin and moderate-to-high ASCVD risk vs. either parameter alone (p<0.001 and p=0.015, respectively). Osteocalcin was independently and inversely associated with elevated C-IMT after adjusting for the 10-year ASCVD risk score (p=0.004). The negative relationship remained statistically significant in subjects with a moderate-to-high ASCVD risk in particular (standardized β=-0.104, p=0.044)., Conclusions: In middle-aged and elderly men, serum osteocalcin levels strengthen identifying subclinical atherosclerosis over ASCVD risk score, especially among subjects with a moderate-to-high ASCVD risk.

Purpose: This observational study investigated the association between serum osteocalcin level and blood pressure in a Chinese population., Materials and Methods: A total of 2241 subjects (909 men and 1,332 women; age, 24-78 years) from Shanghai communities were recruited. Subjects were divided into non-hypertensive and hypertensive groups according to diagnosis of hypertension based on the 1999 World Health Organization-International Society of Hypertension Guidelines. Serum osteocalcin levels were measured using an electrochemiluminescence immunoassay., Results: Men in the hypertensive group showed lower serum osteocalcin level compared with those in the non-hypertensive group, [16.37 (13.34-20.11) ng/mL versus 17.01 (14.23-20.79) ng/mL, p = .039]. No difference in serum osteocalcin level was found between the two groups of women (p = .675). An inverse association was observed between serum osteocalcin level and systolic blood pressure (SBP) in men (p = .004), but serum osteocalcin level was not associated with diastolic blood pressure (DBP) in men (p = .472). No associations were detected between serum osteocalcin level and SBP or DBP in women (SBP: p = .108; DBP: p = .575). A multiple stepwise regression analysis showed an inverse association between serum osteocalcin level and SBP in men after adjusting for age, smoking status, family history of hypertension, and lipid and C-reactive protein levels (standardized β = -0.074, p = .023), but the association disappeared after adjustment for body mass index, waist circumference, blood glucose, and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (p = .327)., Conclusions: Serum osteocalcin level was not independently associated with blood pressure in a Chinese population.

Objective: Depression is one of the most common mental disorders, and women are more vulnerable to depression than men, particularly during stages of hormonal fluctuations. After menopause, fat accumulation shifts from the subcutaneous area to the visceral area, and the risk of metabolic disorder increases in parallel. The present study aimed to evaluate the association between abdominal fat distribution and the presence of depressive symptoms in postmenopausal women., Methods: Visceral fat area (VFA) was detected by magnetic resonance imaging. Depressive symptoms were evaluated with Zung's Self-Rating Depression Scale., Results: In all, 437 normoglycemic postmenopausal women with a mean age of 58.4 ± 5.0 years (mean age at final menstrual period: 50.1 ± 3.5 years) were enrolled in the present study, including 117 individuals with depressive symptoms and 320 individuals without depressive symptoms. The prevalence of abdominal obesity in women with depressive symptoms was much higher than that in those without depressive symptoms (37.6% vs 27.5%; P = 0.042). Participants with depressive symptoms showed elevated VFA values (74.6 ± 29.8 vs 65.9 ± 28.9 cm; P = 0.006). Multivariate stepwise regression analysis demonstrated that VFA was independently correlated with the presence of depressive symptoms (standardized β = 0.099, P = 0.012)., Conclusions: In Chinese postmenopausal women, visceral fat accumulation was an independent and positive factor significantly associated with the presence of depressive symptoms.

Several recent clinical studies have suggested that the levels of circulating 3-carboxy-4-methyl-5-propyl-2-furanpropanoic acid (CMPF) are significantly higher in patients with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). This study recruited a total of 516 participants. The following patient populations were enrolled: 99 newly diagnosed cases with T2DM, 219 cases with prediabetes [82 with isolated impaired glucose tolerance (I - IGT), 66 with isolated impaired fasting glucose (I - IFG) and 71 with impaired glucose tolerance and impaired fasting glucose (IGT + IFG)], and 198 cases with normal glucose tolerance [NGT, including 99 first-degree relatives of type 2 diabetes patients (FDRs) and 99 non-FDRs]. We investigated the circulating CMPF levels in subjects with different glucose metabolism statuses and examined the potential link between CMPF and β cell function. Our results indicate that the serum CMPF levels were elevated in the prediabetes, T2DM, and FDRs groups compared to the NGT group. Additionally, the serum CMPF concentrations were independently and negatively associated with the triglyceride levels and Stumvoll first-phase insulin secretion index. Cumulatively, our findings suggest that the circulating CMPF levels can predict glycolipid metabolism disorders. Furthermore, elevated serum CMPF concentrations may determine hyperglycemia and β cell dysfunction.

Study Objectives: To evaluate the performance of a portable monitor (Nox-T3, Nox Medical Inc. Reykjavik, Iceland) used to diagnose obstructive sleep apnea in Chinese adults., Methods: Eighty Chinese adults (mean ± standard deviation age 47.6 ± 14.0 years, 77.5% males, body mass index 27.5 ± 5.4 kg/m 2 ) underwent overnight, unattended home sleep apnea testing (HSAT) with the Nox-T3 portable monitor followed by an overnight in-laboratory polysomnogram (PSG) with simultaneous portable monitor recording. The portable monitor recordings were scored using automated analysis and then manually edited using different criteria for scoring hypopneas. Polysomnography was scored based on recommended guidelines., Results: When scoring of hypopneas required a ≥ 4% oxygen desaturation event, the mean ± standard deviation apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) was 24.4 ± 20.8 events/h on HSAT, 28.0 ± 22.9 events/h on in-laboratory portable monitor recording, and 28.6 ± 23.9 events/h on PSG ( P < .0001). Bland-Altman analysis of AHI on PSG versus HSAT showed a mean difference (95% confidence interval) of -4.64 (-7.15, -2.13); limits of agreement (equal to ± 2 standard deviations) was -26.62 to 17.35 events/h. Based on a threshold of AHI ≥ 5 events/h, HSAT had 95% sensitivity, 69% specificity, 94% positive predictive value, and 75% negative predictive value compared to PSG. Using an AHI ≥ 15 events/h, HSAT had 93% sensitivity, 85% specificity, 89% positive predictive value, and 91% negative predictive value. Closer agreements were present when comparing the simultaneous recordings. Similar results were obtained using different scoring criteria for hypopneas., Conclusions: Despite known differences between HSAT and PSG, the results show close agreement between the two diagnostic tests in Chinese adults, especially when controlling for night-to-night variability and changes in sleeping environment., (© 2017 American Academy of Sleep Medicine)

Proteomics is a newborn science focusing on the comprehensive systematic analysis of all proteins in the molecule machineries, organelles, cells, tissues, organs or intact organisms. It has been becoming one of the focuses in life sciences and the cutting-edged techniques in biotechnologies in the 21st century. During last decade, proteomics in China has developed much faster than other developing fields in life sciences. This review article briefly retrospects the origin and development of proteomics in China, also provides an overview on the representative scientific progress and perspectives.

Background: Adequate maternal nutrient intake during pregnancy is important to ensure satisfactory birth outcomes. There are no data available on the usual dietary intake among pregnant women in rural China. The present study describes and evaluates the dietary intake in a cohort of pregnant women living in two counties of rural Shaanxi, western China., Methods: 1420 pregnant women were recruited from a trial that examined the effects of micronutrient supplementation on birth outcomes. Dietary information was collected at the end of their trimester or after delivery with an interviewed-administrated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Nutrients intake was calculated from the FFQ and compared to the Estimated Average Requirements (EAR). The EAR cut-offs based on the Chinese Nutrition Society Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) were used to assess the prevalence of inadequate dietary intakes of energy, protein, calcium, zinc, riboflavin, vitamin C and folate. Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal Wallis tests were used to compare nutrient intakes across subgroups., Results: The mean nutrient intakes assessed by the FFQ was similar to those reported in the 2002 Chinese National Nutrition and Health Survey from women living in rural areas except for low intakes of protein, fat, iron and zinc. Of the participants, 54% were at risk of inadequate intake of energy. There were high proportions of pregnant women who did not have adequate intakes of folate (97%) and zinc (91%). Using the "probability approach", 64% of subjects had an inadequate consumption of iron., Conclusion: These results reveal that the majority of pregnant women in these two counties had low intakes of nutrients that are essential for pregnancy such as iron and folate., Trial Registration: ISRCTN08850194.
