The extant research provides inconsistent results regarding the effect of outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) on firm productivity. There is no research on the effect of OFDI in belt and road (B&R) countries on Chinese firm productivity. In this paper, the impact of B&R OFDI on Chinese firm productivity and its influencing mechanisms are investigated. The main findings of this research are as follows. First, B&R OFDI positively influences productivity by alleviating firms' financial constraints. Second, the presence of market‐driven and production‐driven subsidiaries in B&R countries exerts a favorable moderating impact on firm productivity. Finally, the productive influence of B&R OFDI is more pronounced for firms in eastern China and for those in the energy and transportation sectors, and it is particularly significant for nonstate‐owned enterprises. These findings have practical implications for governments engaged in the design of effective policies for the promotion of B&R OFDIs and for firms developing robust OFDI strategies along the Belt and Road to improve their levels of productivity. Hemiculterella wui is an endemic small freshwater fish, distributed in the Pearl River system and Qiantang River, China. In this study, we identified and annotated the complete mitochondrial genome sequence of H. wui. The mitochondrial genome was 16,619 bp in length and contained 13 protein coding genes (PCGs), two rRNA genes, 22 tRNA genes, and one control region. The nucleotide composition of the mitochondrial genome was 29.9% A, 25.3% T, 27.4% C, and 17.5% G, respectively. Most PCGs used the ATG start codon, except COI and ATPase 8 started with the GTG start codon. Five PCGs used the TAA termination codon and ATPase 8 ended with the TAG stop codon, and the remaining seven genes used two incomplete stop codons (T and TA). Most of the tRNA genes showed classical cloverleaf secondary structures, except that tRNASer(AGY) lacked the dihydrouracil loop. The average Ka/Ks value of the ATPase 8 gene was the highest, while the average Ka/Ks value of the COI gene was the lowest. Phylogenetic analyses showed that H. wui has a very close relationship with Pseudohemiculter dispar and H. sauvagei. This study will provide a valuable basis for further studies of taxonomy and phylogenetic analyses in H. wui and Xenocyprididae. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: As a national second-class animal in China, it is urgent to protect the wild population resources of Sinocyclocheilus. In this study, we constructed the first full-length transcriptome of Sinocyclocheilus multipunctatus from the molecular perspective, analyzed and inferred its phylogenetic relationships, divergence time, and whole-genome duplication events, and screened 220 positive selection genes involved in gene control, signal transduction, immune response, and other processes from the A- and B-subgenome of S. multipunctatus. This will provide basic support for future evolutionary and genomic studies on the cave adaptation mechanism of this species. Sinocyclocheilus multipunctatus is a second-class nationally protected wild animal in China. As one of the cavefish, S. multipunctatus has strong adaptability to harsh subterranean environments. In this study, we used PacBio SMRT sequencing technology to generate a first representative full-length transcriptome for S. multipunctatus. Sequence clustering analysis obtained 232,126 full-length transcripts. Among all transcripts, 40,487 were annotated in public databases, while 70,300 microsatellites, 2384 transcription factors, and 16,321 long non-coding RNAs were identified. The phylogenetic tree showed that S. multipunctatus shows a closer relationship to Carassius auratus and Cyprinus carpio, phylogenetically diverging from the common ancestor ~14.74 million years ago (Mya). We also found that between 15.6 and 17.5 Mya, S. multipunctatus also experienced an additional whole-genome duplication (WGD) event, which may have promoted the species evolution of S. multipunctatus. Meanwhile, the overall rates of evolutionary of polyploid S. multipunctatus were significantly higher than those of the other cyprinids, and 220 positively selected genes (PSGs) were identified in two sub-genomes of S. multipunctatus. These PSGs are likely to fulfill critical roles in the process of adapting to diverse cave environments. This study has the potential to facilitate future investigations into the genomic characteristics of S. multipunctatus and provide valuable insights into revealing the evolutionary history of polyploid S. multipunctatus. Background: Lipid metabolism dysregulation is a prominent metabolic alteration in various cancers. The study aimed to explore the association of plasma lipid metabolism profiles with overall survival (OS) for gastric cancer (GC) patients who received gastrectomy. Methods: GC patients who were treated with gastrectomy and measured with plasma lipid metabolism profiles using proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) spectroscopy in Nanfang Hospital between January 1, 2017, and October 31, 2018, were recruited. The Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) regression model was used to analyze variables selected by univariate analysis for OS. An index of plasma lipid metabolism profiles, named plasma lipid metabolism index (PLMI), was constructed by variables' coefficients in LASSO regression to explore its association with OS and its role in the prediction model. Results: A total of 158 GC patients were included in this study. Four of the 110 lipid profiles, including LDL-5 Apo-B, LDL-4 Cholesterol, HDL-4 Apo-A2, and HDL-4 Free Cholesterol, were selected to construct the PLMI. The optimal cut-off value of PLMI for OS was used to classify the population into two subgroups, the high PLMI group (≥ − 0.163) and the low PLMI group (< − 0.163). The high PLMI group had a shorter OS (p = 0.0034) and was the independent risk factor for OS (Hazard Ratio = 2.13, 95% Confidence Interval (CI): 1.07–4.22, p = 0.031) after adjusting for perineural invasion and tumor stage. In subsets of the I–III stage and treating postoperative chemotherapy, high PLMI also had an unfavorable correlation with OS (p = 0.016 and p = 0.0086, respectively). The nomogram prediction models of both the training cohort and validation cohort showed good calibration and discrimination with the concordance indexes of 0.806 (95% CI, 0.732–0.880) in the training cohort and 0.794 (95% CI, 0.725–0.862) in the validation cohort. Conclusions: This study found that the index derived from the LDL-5 Apo-B, LDL-4 Cholesterol, HDL-4 Apo-A2, and HDL-4 Free Cholesterol, was significantly associated with overall survival, suggesting that regulating lipid metabolisms might improve the prognosis for GC patients. Background: Little is known about the relation between perioperative inflammatory changes and long-term survival in cancer patients. The aim of the study was to assess the association of perioperative serum interleukin-6 (IL6) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNFα) levels with the 5-year overall survival in locally advanced gastric cancer.Methods: The 135 eligible patients in one center of Nanfang Hospital were retrieved from CLASS-01 trial (NCT01609309), an open-label, multicenter, randomized clinical noninferiority trial conducted at 14 centers in China. Serum IL6 and TNFα levels were tested before surgery, and on postoperative day (POD) 1, POD3, and POD5, respectively, referring to IL6_0, IL6_1, IL6_3, and IL6_5 and TNFα_0, TNFα_1, TNFα_3, and TNFα_5. Kaplan-Meier methods and COX models were used for survival analysis.Results: High levels of IL6_0 (≥3.67 pg/mL) and TNFα_0 (≥14.8 pg/mL) presented worse disease-free survival (DFS) (P = 0.0057 for IL6_0 and P = 0.0014 for TNFα_0) and overall survival (OS) (P = 0.0021 for IL6_0 and P = 0.0019 for TNFα_0). Both high IL6_0 and high IL6_5 levels indicated worse prognosis than other combinations (P = 0.0045 for DFS and P = 0.0022 for OS). In multivariate analysis, both high IL6_0 and high IL6_5 levels were significantly associated with poor DFS (HR = 4.29, 95% CI: 1.42-12.95, P = 0.01) and OS (HR = 4.11, 95% CI: 1.35-12.49, P = 0.013) after adjustment of tumor stage and TNFα_0. Also, high IL6_5 level was identified as the independent-related factor for postoperative infectious complications (OR = 2.69, 95% CI: 1.03-7.01, P = 0.043).Conclusions: Perioperative high serum IL6 and TNFα levels are negatively associated with 5-year survival outcomes in patients with locally advanced gastric cancer, indicating the potential survival benefits from perioperative anti-inflammatory treatment. The prognostic implication of circulating tumor cell (CTC) -associated white blood cell clusters (CTC-WBC clusters) in patients with gastric cancer (GC) after radical gastrectomy is not well defined. The prognostic value of the CTC-WBC clusters was evaluated retrospectively in an independent cohort of GC patients with radical gastrectomy from Nanfang Hospital, Southern Medical University, China, between March 1, 2018, and September 31, 2019. The cohort was grouped into two groups: CTC-WBC group and CTC group. The CTC-WBC clusters and CTCs in blood were detected by technology of Canapatrol™ CTC filtration system. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to generate survival curve and compare the disease-free survival and OS. Cox regression model was used for multivariate analyses. Two hundred and seventeen patients were included for analyses, 29 patients presenting CTC-WBC clusters positive (CTC-WBC group) and 188 patients presenting exclusively CTCs (CTC group). Depth of tumor invasion was statistically different between two groups (P = 0.043), and the other clinicopathological features between the two groups were similar. Kaplan–Meier analysis showed that positive CTC-WBC cluster patients had significantly shorter OS than patients with exclusively CTC (P = 0.037). Cox regression analysis revealed that CTC-WBC cluster was an independent factor (Hazard Ratio = 2.553, 95% Confidence Interval: 1.008–6.465, P = 0.048) for OS after adjustment of age, gender, number of CTCs, type of CTCs, and tumor stage. The presence of CTC-WBC clusters is associated with poor OS in the GC patients after radical surgery regardless of tumor stage. Nitrous acid (HONO), as a precursor of the hydroxyl radical (OH), plays an important role in the photochemistry of the troposphere, especially in the polluted urban atmosphere. A field campaign was conducted to measure atmospheric HONO concentration and that of other pollutants (such as NO and particle mass concentration) in the autumn of 2009 at Shanghai urban areas. HONO mixing ratios were simultaneously measured by three different techniques: long path absorption photometer (LOPAP), differential optical absorption spectroscopy (DOAS) and chemical ionization mass spectrometer (CIMS). The measurements showed that the mixing ratios of HONO were highly variable and depended strongly on meteorological parameters. The HONO levels ranged from 0.5 to 7 ppb with maximum values during early morning and minimum levels during late afternoon. The three instruments reproduced consistent diurnal pattern of HONO concentrations with higher concentration during the night compared to the daylight hours. Comparison of HONO/HONO ratios during daytime and nighttime periods exhibited a non-systematic disagreement of 0.93 and 1.16, respectively. This would indicate different chemical compositions of sampled air for the LOPAP and the CIMS instruments during daytime and nighttime periods, which have possibly affected measurements. Mean HONO concentration reported by LOPAP was 33 % higher than by DOAS on the whole period with no significant difference between daytime and nighttime periods. This revealed a systematic deviation from both instruments. The present data provides complementary information of HONO ambient levels in the atmosphere of Shanghai urban areas. Scientific issues relevant to interactions between aerosols and the Asian monsoon climate were discussed and evaluated at the 33rd 'Forum of Science and Technology Frontiers' sponsored by the Department of Earth Sciences at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Major results are summarized in this paper. The East Asian monsoon directly affects aerosol transport and provides a favorable background circulation for the occurrence and development of persistent fog-haze weather. Spatial features of aerosol transport and distribution are also influenced by the East Asian monsoon on seasonal, inter-annual, and decadal scales. High moisture levels in monsoon regions also affect aerosol optical and radiative properties. Observation analyses indicate that cloud physical properties and precipitation are significantly affected by aerosols in China with aerosols likely suppressing local light and moderate rainfall, and intensifying heavy rainfall in southeast coastal regions. However, the detailed mechanisms behind this pattern still need further exploration. The decadal variation in the East Asian monsoon strongly affects aerosol concentrations and their spatial patterns. The weakening monsoon circulation in recent decades has likely helped to increase regional aerosol concentrations. The substantial increase in Chinese air pollutants has likely decreased the temperature difference between land and sea, which favors intensification of the weakening monsoon circulation. The naked carp, Gymnocypris przewalskii , is one of the dominant aquaculture fish species in Qinghai Province, China. Its wild stocks have severely suffered from overfishing, and the farming species are vulnerable to various pathogens infections. Here we report the first immune-related tissues transcriptome of a wild naked carp using a deep sequencing approach. A total of 158,087 unigenes are generated, 2687 gill-specific gene and 3215 kidney-specific genes are identified, respectively. Gene ontology analysis shows that 51,671 unigenes are involved in three major functional categories: biological process, cellular component, and molecular function. Further analysis shows that numerous consensus sequences are homologous to known immune-related genes. Pathways mapping annotate 56,270 unigenes and identify a large number of immune-related pathways. In addition, we focus on the immune-related genes and gene family in Toll-like receptor signaling pathway involved in innate immunity, including toll-like receptors (TLRs), interferon regulatory factors (IRFs), interleukins (ILs) and tumor necrosis factors (TNFs). Eventually, we identify 5 TLRs, 4 IRFs, 3 ILs and 2 TNFs with a completed coding sequence though mining the transcriptome data. Phylogeny analysis shows these genes of naked carp are mostly close to zebrafish. Protein domain and selection pressure analyses together show that all these genes are highly conserved in gene sequence and protein domain structure with other species, and purifying selection underwent in these genes, implied functionally important features are conserved in the genes above. Intriguingly, we detect positive selection signals in naked carp TLR4 , and significant divergence occurred among tested species TLR4 , suggested that naked carp TLR4 function may be affected. Finally, we identify 23,867 simple sequence repeat (SSR) marks in this transcriptome. Taken together, this study not only contributes a large number of candidate genes in naked carp immunity, and also helps improve current understanding of immunogenetics basis and evolutionary history of immune related genes and gene family in highland fish species. Schizothorax lissolabiatus is an economically important cold-water fish species in southwestern China. Because of water pollution and habitat destruction, the number of wild populations has dramatically decreased. In this study, we used PacBio single-molecule real-time (SMRT) sequencing and Illumina sequencing to generate the first full-length transcriptome and transcriptome, respectively. A total of 19 310 polished consensus reads (PC) were obtained, with an average length of 1379 bp and an N50 length of 1485 bp. Meanwhile, 12 253 transcripts were successfully annotated as known homologous genes. The pathway annotation indicated that the enrichment and expression of most genes were mainly related to membrane, signal transduction and binding, and immune response. Furthermore, we identified 16 Toll-like receptors (TLRs) by mining the data from the transcripts. Phylogeny analysis showed that S. lissolabiatus TLR genes (slTLRs) supported the classification of TLRs into six families as in other vertebrates. Selection pressure analyses showed that 16 slTLRs revealed purification selection at the overall evolutionary selection. Further, positive selection signals were still detected in eight slTLRs , and most of the positive selection sites were located in the leucine-rich repeat region (LRR domain) associated with the recognition of pathogenic microorganisms, indicating that the function of these slTLR genes may be affected. Tissue specific expression analysis showed all slTLRs are present in kidney, spleen and liver but the relative expression varied among tissues. In conclusion, this study not only provided a valuable resource of transcripts for further research on S. lissolabiatus , but also contributed to improve the current understanding of the evolutionary history of immune-related genes and the TLR gene family in S. lissolabiatus. • We constructed the first full-length transcriptome and transcriptome of Schizothorax lissolabiatus. • 16 TLRs from S. lissolabiatus was obtained. • 8 slTLRs underwent positive selection and most positively selected sites were found in LRR domain. • Most of slTLRs tended to be highly expressed in kidney and spleen. Abstract: The schizothoracine Gymnocypris chilianensis is restricted to the Shiyang, Ruoshui and Shule Rivers, listed from east to west, along the northeast edge of the Tibetan Plateau. This distribution provides a valuable system to test hypotheses about postglacial colonization. We used mitochondrial DNA sequence data (a control region and the cytochrome b gene; 1894bp) to assess the phylogeographic structure of this species based on 278 specimens sampled from throughout the species’ entire geographical range. We found three lineages corresponding geographically to the three rivers, suggesting three independent glacial differentiation centers within the northeast edge of the Tibetan Plateau. The phylogenetic analysis suggested that the Shiyang River population forms a lineage that separated from the other populations of G. chilianensis at the basal phylogenetic split within this species. The molecular data further demonstrated a clear pattern of decreasing genetic diversity from the eastern Shiyang River towards the central Ruoshui River and western Shule River lineages, a pattern consistent with sequential western colonization. We therefore propose a phylogeographic scenario for G. chilianensis of a gradual westerly expansion from the Shiyang River population along the northeast edge of the Tibetan Plateau, with subsequent allopatric evolution at approximately 0.37 and 0.05 million years ago (Ma), through at least two glacial maxima. Together with the genetic evidence reported in other species, our findings suggest that this common biogeographic pattern emphasizes the importance of the northeastern edge region of the Tibetan Plateau as a hotspot of genetic diversity for some taxa. Abstract: This article describes the design and performance of a cavity ring-down spectroscopic (CRDS) instrument for measuring extinction coefficients of laboratory and ambient atmospheric aerosols. Through averaging 1000 individual waveforms, a minimum detectable aerosol extinction coefficient of 6.1×10−7 m−1 is achieved. Tests with polystyrene spheres (PSS), we suggested this CRDS system could measure the extinction coefficient of aerosol with uncertainty <3% under laboratory controlled experimental conditions. The visual range measured with CRDS agrees well with visibility observations from Shanghai Meteorological Bureau. Combined with the TSI integrating nephelometer and NO x analyzer, CRDS was used to monitor the optical properties of ambient aerosols in the heavy pollution episode. The uncertainty for using the CRDS and TSI nephelometer to measure single scattering albedo (SSA) in an ambient measurement is estimated to be <12%. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The burning of agricultural crop residue represents a major source of trace gases (CO, CO2, NO, NO2, and NO x ) and particulate matter on a regional and global scale. This study investigates the gaseous and particulate emissions from the burning of rice, wheat and corn straws, which are three major agricultural crop residues in China, using a self-built burning stove and an aerosol chamber. Emission factors of CO2, CO, NO, NO2 and NO x were measured to be 791.3, 64.2, 1.02, 0.79 and 1.81gkg−1 for rice straw, 1557.9, 141.2, 0.79, 0.32 and 1.12gkg−1 for wheat straw, and 1261.5, 114.7, 0.85, 0.43 and 1.28gkg−1 for corn straw, respectively. The corresponding emission factors of particle number are 1.8×1013, 1.0×1013, and 1.7×1013 particleskg−1, respectively. The total emissions of CO, CO2, and NO x from rice, wheat and corn straw burnings in China for the year 2004 were estimated to be 22.59, 252.92, and 0.28Tg, respectively. The percentages of CO, CO2, and NO x to the total emissions were 13.9%, 15.3%, and 31.4% for rice straw, 32.9%, 32.5%, and 20.9% for wheat straw, and 53.2%, 52.2%, and 47.6% for corn straw, respectively. In addition, the emission allocations of agricultural crop residue burning were also plotted in different regions of China using a simple geographic information system (GIS). Abstract: Global fish consumption is increasing in tandem with population growth, resulting in the dilemma of overfishing. Overfished high-value fish are often replaced with other fish in markets. Therefore, the accurate identification of fish products in the market is important. In this study, full-DNA and mini-DNA barcoding were used to detect fish product fraud in Guiyang, Guizhou Province, People's Republic of China. The molecular results revealed that 39 (20.42%) of the 191 samples were inconsistent with the labels. The percentages of mislabeling of fresh, frozen, cooked, and canned fish products were 11.70, 20.00, 34.09, and 50.00%, respectively. The average Kimura two-parameter distances of mini-DNA barcoding within species and within genera were 0.56 and 6.42%, respectively, and those of full-DNA barcoding were 0.53 and 7.25%, respectively. Commercial fraud was evident in this study; most high-priced fish were replaced with low-priced fish with similar features. Severe haze events with exceedingly high-levels of fine aerosols occur frequently over the past decades in the North China Plain (NCP), exerting profound impacts on human health, weather, and climate. The development of effective mitigation policies requires a comprehensive understanding of the haze formation mechanisms, including identification and quantification of the sources, formation, and transformation of the aerosol species. Haze evolution in this region exhibits distinct physical and chemical characteristics from clean to polluted periods, as evident from increasing stagnation and relative humidity, but decreasing solar radiation as well as explosive secondary aerosol formation. The latter is attributed to highly elevated concentrations of aerosol precursor gases and is reflected by rapid increases in the particle number and mass concentrations, both corresponding to nonequilibrium chemical processes. Considerable new knowledge has been acquired to understand the processes regulating haze formation, particularly in light of the progress in elucidating the aerosol formation mechanisms. This review synthesizes recent advances in understanding secondary aerosol formation, by highlighting several critical chemical/physical processes, that is, new particle formation and aerosol growth driven by photochemistry and aqueous chemistry as well as the interaction between aerosols and atmospheric stability. Current challenges and future research priorities are also discussed.

Regional severe haze represents an enormous environmental problem in China, influencing air quality, human health, ecosystem, weather, and climate. These extremes are characterized by exceedingly high concentrations of fine particulate matter (smaller than 2.5 µm, or PM 2.5 ) and occur with extensive temporal (on a daily, weekly, to monthly timescale) and spatial (over a million square kilometers) coverage. Although significant advances have been made in field measurements, model simulations, and laboratory experiments for fine PM over recent years, the causes for severe haze formation have not yet to be systematically/comprehensively evaluated. This review provides a synthetic synopsis of recent advances in understanding the fundamental mechanisms of severe haze formation in northern China, focusing on emission sources, chemical formation and transformation, and meteorological and climatic conditions. In particular, we highlight the synergetic effects from the interactions between anthropogenic emissions and atmospheric processes. Acetylacetone (AcAc) is a common atmospheric oxygenated volatile organic compound due to broad industrial applications, but its atmospheric oxidation mechanism is not fully understood. We investigate the mechanism, kinetics, and atmospheric fate of the OH-initiated oxidation for the enolic and ketonic isomers of AcAc using quantum chemical and kinetic rate calculations. OH addition to enol-AcAc is more favorable than addition to keto-AcAc, with the total rate constant of 1.69 × 10 -13 exp(1935/T) cm 3 molecule -1 s -1 over the temperature range of 200-310 K. For the reaction of the enol-AcAc with OH, the activation energies of H-abstraction are at least 4 kcal mol -1 higher than those of OH-addition, and the rate constants for OH-addition are by 2-3 orders of magnitude higher than those for H-abstraction. Oxidation of AcAc is predicted to yield significant amounts of acetic acid and methylglyoxal, larger than those are currently recognized. A lifetime of less than a few hours for AcAc is estimated throughout the tropospheric conditions. In addition, we present field measurements in Beijing and Nanjing, China, showing significant concentrations of AcAc in the two urban locations. Our results reveal that the OH-initiated oxidation of AcAc contributes importantly to ozone and SOA formation under polluted environments.

Black carbon (BC) exerts profound impacts on air quality and climate because of its high absorption cross-section over a broad range of electromagnetic spectra, but the current results on absorption enhancement of BC particles during atmospheric aging remain conflicting. Here, we quantified the aging and variation in the optical properties of BC particles under ambient conditions in Beijing, China, and Houston, United States, using a novel environmental chamber approach. BC aging exhibits two distinct stages, i.e., initial transformation from a fractal to spherical morphology with little absorption variation and subsequent growth of fully compact particles with a large absorption enhancement. The timescales to achieve complete morphology modification and an absorption amplification factor of 2.4 for BC particles are estimated to be 2.3 h and 4.6 h, respectively, in Beijing, compared with 9 h and 18 h, respectively, in Houston. Our findings indicate that BC under polluted urban environments could play an essential role in pollution development and contribute importantly to large positive radiative forcing. The variation in direct radiative forcing is dependent on the rate and timescale of BC aging, with a clear distinction between urban cities in developed and developing countries, i.e., a higher climatic impact in more polluted environments. We suggest that mediation in BC emissions achieves a cobenefit in simultaneously controlling air pollution and protecting climate, especially for developing countries.

Ambient aerosol samples were collected at an urban site and an upwind rural site of Beijing during the CAREBEIJING-2008 (Campaigns of Air quality REsearch in BEIJING and surrounding region) summer field campaign. Contributions of primary particles and secondary organic aerosols (SOA) were estimated by chemical mass balance (CMB) modeling and tracer-yield method. The apportioned primary and secondary sources explain 73.8% ± 9.7% and 79.6% ± 10.1% of the measured OC at the urban and rural sites, respectively. Secondary organic carbon (SOC) contributes to 32.5 ± 15.9% of the organic carbon (OC) at the urban site, with 17.4 ± 7.6% from toluene, 9.7 ± 5.4% from isoprene, 5.1 ± 2.0% from α-pinene, and 2.3 ± 1.7% from β-caryophyllene. At the rural site, the secondary sources are responsible for 38.4 ± 14.4% of the OC, with the contributions of 17.3 ± 6.9%, 13.9 ± 9.1%, 5.6 ± 1.9%, and 1.7 ± 1.0% from toluene, isoprene, α-pinene, and β-caryophyllene, respectively. Compared with other regions in the world, SOA in Beijing is less aged, but the concentrations are much higher; between the sites, SOA is more aged and affected by regional transport at the urban site. The high SOA loading in Beijing is probably attributed to the high regional SOC background (~2 μg m(-3)). The toluene SOC concentration is high and comparable at the two sites, implying that some anthropogenic components, at least toluene SOA, are widespread in Beijing and represents a major factor in affecting the regional air quality. The aerosol gaseous precursor concentrations and temperature correlate well with SOA, both affecting SOA formation. The significant SOA enhancement with increasing water uptake and acidification indicates that the aqueous-phase reactions are largely responsible SOA formation in Beijing.
