Background: The large amphibious freshwater apple snail is an important invasive species in China, but there is currently no method available for their surveillance. The development and popularization of smartphones provide a new platform for research on surveillance technologies for the early detection and effective control of invasive species. Methods: The ASI surveillance system was developed based on the infrastructure of the WeChat platform and Amap. The user can directly enter the game interface through the WeChat port on their mobile phone, and the system automatically obtains their location. The user can then report the location of apple snails. The administrator can audit the reported information, and all information can be exported to Microsoft Excel version 2016 for analysis. The map was generated by ArcGIS 10.2 and was used to characterize the spatial and temporal distribution of apple snails in Jiangsu Province. Results: The architecture of ASI consists of three parts: a mobile terminal, a server terminal and a desktop terminal. We published more than 10 tweets on the official WeChat account of the system to announce it to the public, and a total of 207 users in 2020 and 2021 correctly reported sightings of apple snails. We identified 550 apple snails breeding sites in 2020 and 2021, featuring ponds (81%), parks (17%) and farmland (2%). In addition, most of the locations contained snail eggs, and the reporting times mainly occurred between May and September. Conclusions: The ASI is an effective surveillance system that can be used to identify the breeding locations of apple snails and provides the basis of prevention and control for its dispersal. Based on multi‐source data, including observation, analysis, model calculation, satellite remote sensing, and scenario estimation data, this study has systematically analysed the warming and dry–wet change characteristics of the Yellow River's upper reaches in the last 60 years. The causes and features of the current warming and humidification and their impact on surface water resources are also discussed. This study found that since 1961, the average temperature in the Yellow River's upper reaches has increased at a rate of 0.37°C/10a, which is more significant than the increases observed for the world, China, and even northwest China in the same period. At the beginning of this century, the rate of change in precipitation in the Yellow River's upper reaches reversed direction from decreasing to increasing, with a significant increase (35 mm/10a) since 2000. Therefore, climate change has shown a significant warming and humidification trend in the upper reaches of the Yellow River. From the dynamic change perspective, the Yellow River's upper reaches were warming and drying in each climatic period from 1961 to 2010; however, the tendency towards dryness slowed period by period. In contrast, the region showed consistent warming and humidification from 1991 to 2020. From the perspective of multiple time scales, the change in average temperature is mainly dominated by the multi‐decadal scale. In contrast, precipitation is dominated by interannual change. The increase in the multi‐decadal component in average temperature and precipitation explains the current warming and humidification. Precipitation changes in the upper reaches of the Yellow River Basin are mainly affected by the westerly circulation, the East Asian summer monsoon, and the South Asian summer monsoon circulation systems. However, precipitation was affected by different circulation factors on different time scales. On an interannual scale, it was mainly affected by the South Asian summer monsoon circulation. On an interdecadal scale, it was mainly affected by the westerly wind and the East Asian summer monsoon circulation. On a multi‐decadal scale, it was jointly influenced by the westerly wind, the East Asian summer monsoon, and the South Asian summer monsoon circulation. Under the control of multi‐decadal synergistic enhancement of the westerly, the East Asian summer monsoon, and the South Asian summer monsoon circulations, the vertical field shows an abnormal upward movement. There has been a significant abnormal easterly and southerly airflow that transports water vapour, and cold air is transported along the northwest airflow at the back of the Mongolian cyclone, which makes the climate in the upper reaches of the Yellow River more humid. The warming and humidifying of the upper reaches of the Yellow River has significantly increased runoff and lake area and significantly degraded the frozen soil. The surface water budget in the Yellow River's upper reaches has significantly responded to the current warming and humidification. The actual surface evapotranspiration and surface runoff increased significantly, but the net surface water budget still showed a decreasing trend. Backfill coal mining technology has drawn widespread attention due to its benefits of "controlling surface deformation and subsidence, reducing mining-induced disturbance in the stope, and recycling solid mine wastes". However, the backfill coal mining technology is still progressing slowly in China. The geological environment of China's mining areas is complex and highly diversified, and backfill coal mining is expected to fulfill different goals in a wide range of engineering scenarios. These facts explain the poor reproducibility of backfill coal mining projects. This study reviews the existing backfill coal mining systems in China. Based on findings from a survey of engineering cases, we summarize five types of new backfill coal mining methods classified by deployment style; namely, borehole grouting backfill, roadway backfill, borehole–roadway backfill, in situ backfill, and roadway-in-situ backfill. A total of 15 backfill coal mining methods falling into the above five categories are described. An engineering design workflow for backfill coal mining consisting of five steps is proposed; namely, identifying the targets of backfill, analyzing the feasibility of deploying the backfill system, comparing the engineering quantities of different engineering schemes, estimating the economic efficiency of backfill, and backfill performance tracking and monitoring. China is rich in Shale gas resources, and the preliminarily predicted geological resource reserves are about 134 1012 m3, with a technically recoverable reserve of approximately 25·1012 m3. The Weiyuan-Rongxian area has abundant natural gas resources, but its geological conditions are complex, characterized by poor drillability of local formations, deep burial of reservoirs, and uneven horizontal distribution. These complex geological conditions result in low mechanical drilling speed, long drilling cycles, and high drilling costs, posing severe challenges and challenges to drilling engineering. In view of the technical difficulties of oil-based drilling fluid in the deep shale high-pressure fracture formation in this block, this paper has developed a particle size variable nano micron plugging agent CLG-NM suitable for the high-pressure fracture formation in the deep shale gas formation. Its molecular structure was characterized, its nano micron plugging characteristics were evaluated, and its microscopic mechanism was discussed. The research results indicate that the median particle size D50 of the newly developed variable nano micron sealing agent CLG-NM is 89.4 nm. After high-temperature aging at 150°C, the filtration loss of the experimental slurry showed a gradually decreasing trend with the increase of the amount of sealing agent CLG-NM added. When the dosage of sealing agent is 1%, the filtration loss of sand disc sealing is only 4.2 mL, demonstrating strong nano micron sealing performance. On this basis, CLG-NM was applied on-site in the Longmaxi Formation of Well Weiye 32-3HF. Field tests have shown that during the drilling process of the Weiye 32-3HF Longmaxi Formation, there were no complex downhole situations such as well leakage or wellbore instability. The drilling was successfully completed, with a pure drilling time of 42 hours, an average drilling speed of 7.81 m/h, and a density reduction of about 0.08-0.1 g/cm3 compared to the adjacent well. The Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes are a significant cultural heritage site in the Silk Road, famous for its wonderful murals and statues. The rainfall causes the changes of humidity in the caves, which can easily activate the salts diseases of murals. In order to prevent the deterioration of the murals, the environmental monitoring tests were conducted to analyze the microclimate changes of the cave in rainfall weather, and proposed the risk prevention measures and suggestions. The results indicate that the temperature of caves has small change, but the humidity shows a clear trend of increase. The humidity and the duration of high humidity increases with the increase of the rainfall grade and frequency. The optimal starting time for environment control in the cave is when aatm and acave are consistent, and the relative humidity is controlled below 62%. The caves with lower layer, larger degree of openness and small volume are most vulnerable to water vapour diffusion. The environment monitoring should pay more attention to the continuous rainfall weather and the vulnerable caves. CMD2D is an autosomal recessive disease resulting from variants in the RPL3L gene, which encodes the 60 S ribosomal protein exclusively expressed in skeletal and cardiac muscle and plays an essential role in myoblast growth and fusion. Previous reports have only associated CMD2D with a small duplication and seven nucleotide substitution in the RPL3L gene. Case presentation: In this study, we report the case of a 31 days old Chinese infant patient with severe dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) and rapid decompensation along with other cardiac malformations. In addition to previously reported clinical features, the patient showed the previously unreported complication of occasional premature atrial contractions and a first-degree atrioventricular block. Whole-exome sequencing (WES) revealed compound heterozygous variants (c.80G > A (p.Gly27Asp) and c.1074dupA (p.Ala359fs*6)) in RPL3L (NM_005061.3). The latter novel variant may result in the absence of protein production with a significant decrease in mRNA level, suggesting it is a loss-of-function mutation. Conclusions: This is the first case report of RPL3L-associated neonatal dilated cardiomyopathy in China. The molecular confirmation of the patient expands the genetic spectrum of CMD2D, and the clinical manifestation of CMD2D in the patient provides additional clinical information regarding this disease. Ecological protection and high-quality development of the Yellow River Basin (YRB), China, aroused remarkable concerns from China's Central Government, and has been a major national strategy. The Inner Mongolia reach of the Yellow River Basin (IM-YRB) is a typical dryland with pervasive vegetation restoration through the actions of the ecological projects that have been conducted in recent years. However, how climate changes and human activities, such as land use and land cover (LULC) changes, jointly impact vegetation variations in this region remains poorly understood. Here, using an explainable machine learning technique, we evaluated linkages between the kernel normalized difference vegetation index (kNDVI) and air temperature, precipitation, soil moisture, and LULC changes, and relevant marginal contributions of these four drivers to the observed vegetation changes. The grassland fraction on a pixel level was selected as the quantitative LULC variable due to its key role in regional LULC. We found that interannual kNDVI changes in most areas of this study region were negatively sensitive to temperature, but positively sensitive to precipitation and soil moisture, with area fractions of 71.74%, 96.93%, and 89.33%, respectively. The area fraction of negative kNDVI sensitivity to LULC was roughly equivalent to that of positive kNDVI sensitivity. The contributions of air temperature, precipitation, soil moisture, and LULC to overall kNDVI changes were 21.54%, 33.32%, 32.19%, and 12.95%, respectively. Moisture conditions also play a critical role in vegetation changes, which was reflected by the fluctuating growth of kNDVI as interannual changes in precipitation. Nonetheless, kNDVI changes are also affected by LULC, and LULC became the dominant factor behind the kNDVI anomalies over the grassland restoration regions from barren over the IM-YRB. Simple Summary: The fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda (JE Smith), is an invasive pest that feeds on a wide range of host plants, especially maize, threatening agricultural production and food security in China. Thus, understanding its host plant preferences is of great significance for its population prediction and management. In this study, the oviposition preferences of S. frugiperda on ten special maize and ten common maize varieties were tested, and the larval development, adult reproduction, and population parameters of S. frugiperda were also examined. Generally, S. frugiperda oviposited and completed its life cycle across all maize cultivars. However, S. frugiperda females preferred the special maize varieties over common maize varieties for oviposition. Moreover, faster growth, higher pupal weight, S. frugiperda adult fecundity, net reproductive rate (R0), intrinsic rate of increase (r), and finite rate of increase (λ) occurred on the special maize varieties. However, the lowest oviposition preference, R0, r, λ, and longest T occurred on Zhengdan 958, suggesting that Zhengdan 958 is a less suitable host compared to the other tested maize varieties. Our findings can provide a reference for the detection of population dynamics and rational planting of maize and help to refine laboratory rearing protocols. Host plants play an important role in the growth, development, and reproduction of insects. However, only a few studies have reported the effects of maize varieties on the growth and reproduction of S. frugiperda. In this study, a free-choice test was used to evaluate the oviposition preferences of female adults on ten common maize varieties and ten special maize varieties. The population fitness of S. frugiperda on six different maize varieties was also examined using the age-stage, two-sex life table method. The results showed that S. frugiperda oviposited and completed its life cycle across all maize cultivars. Moreover, the S. frugiperda females exhibited a significantly higher oviposition preference on the special maize varieties than on the common maize varieties. The highest number of eggs and egg masses occurred on Baitiannuo and the lowest on Zhengdan 958. The egg + larval stage, preadult, pupal stage, adult, APOP, TPOP, and total longevity of S. frugiperda were significantly shorter on the special maize varieties than on the common maize varieties. The fecundity, oviposition days, pupal weight, and hatching rate of S. frugiperda were significantly higher on the special maize varieties than on the common maize varieties. Specifically, S. frugiperda had the highest fecundity, female, and male pupal weight on Baitiannuo. Moreover, the net reproductive rate (R0), intrinsic rate of increase (r), and finite rate of increase (λ) of S. frugiperda were the greatest on Baitiannuo, whereas the shortest mean generation time (T) occurred on Zaocuiwang. The lowest R0, r, and λ, and longest T occurred on Zhengdan 958, suggesting that Zhengdan 958 is a non-preferred host plant compared to the other tested maize varieties. Parents' perception of parental involvement or that of children has been found to be associated with the mental health of children. Rather than scrutinizing whether parents' perception or children's perception matters more, this study investigated whether and how parent–child perception differences (parents' perceptions minus their children's perceptions) in home‐based parental involvement were related to anxiety, depression, and stress in children. We surveyed 2219 adolescents (approximately 12–14 years old) and their parents in nine middle schools in eastern China. Findings indicate that parent–child perception differences in parental daily involvement (e.g., Depression: β =.065, p <.01) and parent–child communication (e.g., Depression: β =.107, p <.001) were detrimental to the mental health of children, and that perceived peer support and perceived teacher emotional support might mitigate the adverse effects. Jar burial is a particular burial practice generally used in the Neolithic period of China. However, the rarity of finding prenatal individuals limits the ability to study their treatment in jar burial contexts. In this paper, to study the postmortem treatment of this specific age further, we focus on three jar burials of infant individuals excavated in 2021 at the Gangshang site in China, where the skeletal remains were relatively well preserved. The skeletal remains of three well‐preserved individuals are presented into inverted ceramic tripods near the residential area and with a crouched posture. In terms of this condition, we apply the osteometric method to estimate the range and mean of age at death for each individual investigated. Meanwhile, we use micro‐computed tomography (CT) scans to help judge the degree of microbial bioerosion. Besides, histological analysis on skeletal remains combined with the Oxford Histological Index (OHI) assessment allows us to estimate the developmental stage at the time of death by analyzing the results of micro‐CT scans. By using osteometric methods, the results show that the gestational age of the three individuals is 22–26, 24–28, and 22–26 weeks, respectively. The results of the micro‐CT scans indicate that all three fetuses died shortly after birth, or had died in their mother's uterus before birth, with the OHI score of 5. Moreover, we indeed observe infant skeleton remains with no bacterial bioerosion, indicating that it is effective using this method to judge the developmental stage at the time of death with a specific taphonomic environment in the Gangshang site of the Dawenkou culture period. Combined with the placement of the jars in which the three infants were buried, it is believed that this unique placement method was intentional and specific to the infant deaths. These results are instructive for exploring the postmortem treatment of dead infants by ancient residents of the Dawenkou culture period (4200 bc–2600 bc) in Shandong Province, China, and the significance and possible causes of the unique burial type. The ecological conservation and high-quality development of the Yellow River Basin (YRB) has been declared as a major national strategy of China. Surface water availability (precipitation minus evapotranspiration, PME) poses challenges to the sustainability of ecosystems of the YRB. Noteworthy is that the Mongolian section of the YRB (IMYRB) is a critical ecological barrier in Northern China. Soil moisture (SM) changes are highly sensitive to PME and important for regional ecological security. However, SM vs. PME interactions and relevant mechanisms within the IMYRB are poorly understood. We found significant decreases in SM and PME over the east IMYRB (r = 0.7, p < 0.05). During the wet (July, August, and September) and dry (April, May, and June) seasons, as well as the whole year, decreased SM drives increased PME through land-atmosphere interactions over more than 90% of the IMYRB. Reduction in SM decreased evapotranspiration over more than 80% of the IMYRB, increased surface temperature across more than 79% of the IMYRB, boosted atmospheric vertical ascent over more than 75% of the IMYRB, and enhanced moisture convergence and PME. The heavy-polluting industry is inexorably to responsible for the deterioration of the environment. Improving environmental performance is an unavoidable decision for heavy-polluting firms to ensure sustainable development under the policy framework of the carbon peak target. This study provides theoretical and empirical evidence for the effect of environmental protection subsidies on environmental performance. This study constructs basic and mediating effect models to measure how environmental protection subsidies affect environmental performance using panel data of China's heavy-polluting listed firms from 2008 to 2019. This is an important outcome of industrial green transformation in environmental governance and provides a scientific basis for government departments to formulate environmental policies. The results of the empirical analysis show that environmental protection subsidies can improve the environmental performance of heavy-polluting listed firms. After receiving environmental protection subsidies, firms engaged in clean and green production through green technology innovation, thereby reducing external environmental pollution and improving their environmental performance. The mediating role of green technology innovation in the relationship between environmental protection subsidies and environmental performance is significant only in state-owned firms and firms in Eastern China. The research results may further guide the direction of green development of heavy-polluting industries, and thus promote harmonious development between the environment and the economy. Evapotranspiration (ET) is an essential component of the land–atmosphere water cycle. In this work, the trend of ET and its dominant factors during 1982 to 2011 are investigated in the northern drought-prone belt of China (NDPB) based on five datasets, including the gridded FLUXNET, using the Pearson correlation and linear regression methods. Specially, we focus on the increasing contribution of vegetation in the change of ET. During 1982–2011, summer ET significantly increased at the rate of 0.33 mm/year (p < 0.05) in the NDPB. However, similar to global-mean ET, the ET in NDPB also experienced a pronounced fluctuation during 1999 and 2002. The role of water supply differed remarkably before and after the fluctuation while the atmospheric demand maintained weak constraint on ET. Before the fluctuation (during 1982–2000), ET correlated significantly (p < 0.01) and positively with soil moisture, indicating ET was primarily limited by water supply. However, their correlation weakened remarkably after the fluctuation when soil moisture decreased to the lowest level for the past thirty years, indicating that neither moisture supply nor atmospheric demand dominated the ET during this period. In contrast, vegetation leaf area index (LAI) maintained consistent significant (p < 0.01) and positive correlation with ET before and after the fluctuation in the NDPB, and it reflected over 60% of the change in ET. Moreover, the LAI in NDPB increased by 19.6% which was more than double of the global-mean increase. The ET increase due to rising LAI offset the ET decrease due to reduction of soil moisture, and vegetation became the primary constraint on ET during 2001–2011. The expansion of vegetation may intensify the risk of drought and cause conflicting demands for water between the ecosystem and humans in the NDPB, especially in the case of weak summer monsoon. Partial melting has been shown to be an important mechanism for intracrustal differentiation and granite petrogenesis. However, a series of compositional differences between granitic melt from experiments and natural granites indicate that the processes of crustal differentiation are complex. To shed light on factors that control the processes of crustal differentiation, and then the compositions of granitic magma, a combined study of petrology and geochemistry was carried out for granites (in the forms of granitic veins and parautochthonous granite) from a granulite terrane in the Tongbai orogen, China. These granites are characterized by high SiO2 (>72 wt%) and low FeO and MgO (<4 wt%) with low Na2O/K2O ratios (<0.7). Minerals in these granites show variable microstructures and compositions. Phase equilibrium modelling using P–T pseudosections shows that neither anatectic melts nor fractionated melts match the compositions of the target granites, challenging the conventional paradigm that granites are the crystallized product of pure granitic melts. Based on the microstructural features of minerals in the granites, and a comparison of their compositions with crystallized minerals from anatectic melts and minerals in granulites, the minerals in these granitoids are considered to have three origins. The first is entrained garnets, which show comparable compositions with those in host granulites. The second is early crystallized mineral from melts, which include large plagioclase and K‐feldspar (with high Ca contents) crystals as well as a part of biotite whose compositions can be reproduced by crystallization of the anatectic melts. The compositions of other minerals such as small grained plagioclase, K‐feldspar and anorthoclase in the granites with low Ca contents are not well reconstructed, so they are considered as the third origin of crystallized products of fractionated melts. The results of mass balance calculation show that the compositions of these granites can be produced by mixing between different proportions of crystallized minerals and fractionated melts with variable amounts of entrained minerals. However, the calculated modal proportions of different crystallized minerals (plagioclase, K‐feldspar, biotite and quartz) in the granites are significantly different from those predicted by melt crystallization modelling. Specifically, some rocks have lower modes of biotite and plagioclase, whereas others show lower K‐feldspar modes than those produced by melt crystallization. This indicates that the crystallized minerals would be differentially separated from the primary magmas to form the evolved magmas that produce these granites. Therefore, the crystal entrainment and differential melt‐crystal separation make important contributions to the composition of the target granites. Compared with leucogranites worldwide, the target granites show comparable compositions. Heatwaves have afflicted human health, ecosystem, and socioeconomy and are expected to intensify under warming climate. However, few efforts have been directed to moist heat stress (MHS) considering relative humidity and wind speed, and moist heat stress risk (MHSR) considering exposure and vulnerability. Here we showed MHS and MHSR variations across China during 1998–2100 using China Meteorological Administration Land Data Assimilation System datasets, the 6th Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) merged datasets, Gross Domestic Product, population and leaf area index. We detected increased MHS across China under different Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs). Specifically, the historical MHS occurred mostly during mid-July to mid-August. We found increasing trends of 0.08%/year, 0.249%/year, and 0.669%/year in the MHS-affected areas under SSP126, SSP245, and SSP585, respectively. Furthermore, we observed the highest increasing rate of MHSR in Northwest and Southwest China, while the MHSR across Northeast and North China under SSP126 shifted from increasing to decreasing trends. Noteworthy is that the increasing trend of MHSR under SSP585 is 1.5–2.6 times larger than that under SSP245, especially in North and South China. Studies conducted at the beginning of this century revealed a warming and humidification trend in northwest China, which lasted for a short period, with some minor variations. The future trend remains uncertain, with uncertainty over the future duration of warming and humidification trends in the region. In this study, a comprehensive index was constructed to quantitatively characterize the degree of humidity. Using observation data, National Center for Atmospheric Research/National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCAR/NCEP) reanalysis data, and future scenario prediction data we systematically analyzed the temporal and spatial evolution characteristics of the warming and humidification trend in northwest China and its possible causes. The results showed that the temperature in northwest China has been continuously increasing since 1961, and although there was no obvious precipitation trend from 1961 to 1999, it has been increasing nonlinearly since 2000. The wetness index considers the synergy of evaporation and precipitation, and had the same pattern of variation as precipitation. From a spatial perspective, the temperature has consistently increased throughout the whole northwest region, and the degree of warming has gradually increased. Precipitation displayed a trend of increasing in the west and decreasing in the east, but the area with increased rainfall expanded eastward over almost three climatic periods, and the area experiencing humidification extended across the whole of the northwest. There has been an obvious eastward expansion of climate humidification in northwest China since the start of this century. However, the current extent of climate humidification has not changed the basic climate pattern in northwest China. Over the next 30 years, the humidification trend will likely slow down significantly compared with the last 20 years. The eastward expansion of climate humidification since the start of this century may have resulted from the multi-decadal synergistic influence of westerly wind circulation and monsoon circulation. Mounting observational records demonstrate human‐caused faunal decline in recent decades, while accumulating archaeological evidence suggests an early biodiversity impact of human activities during the Holocene. A fundamental question arises concerning whether modern wildlife population declines began during early human disturbance. Here, we performed a population genomic analysis of six common forest birds in East Asia to address this question. For five of them, demographic history inference based on 25–33 genomes of each species revealed dramatic population declines by 4‐ to 48‐fold over millennia (e.g. 2000–5000 thousand years ago). Nevertheless, summary statistics detected nonsignificant correlations between these population size trajectories and Holocene temperature variations, and ecological niche models explicitly predicted extensive range persistence during the Holocene, implying limited demographic consequence of Holocene climate change. Further analyses suggest high negative correlations between the reconstructed population declines and human disturbance intensities and indicate a potential driver of human activities. These findings provide a deep‐time and large‐scale insight into the recently recognized avifaunal decline and support an early origin hypothesis of human effects on biodiversity. Overall, our study sheds light on the current biodiversity crisis in the context of long‐term human–environment interactions and offers a multi‐evidential framework for quantitatively assessing the ecological consequences of human disturbance. In order to effectively address or eliminate the impact of CO2 emissions, it is essential to investigate the analysis of CO2 emissions under transport infrastructure and tourism. Transportation infrastructure helps to achieve carbon dioxide emission limitation, which is crucial for resource distribution, effectively summarizing the regularity and innovation in the process of carbon dioxide emission limitation. In the case of fully grasping the principles of low-carbon tourism development and related policy protection, a suitable low-carbon tourism development model is found. By constructing a data analysis model, this paper analyzes the impact of transportation infrastructure and ecotourism on carbon dioxide emission limitation. In terms of methods and systems, effective measures are given to the role of Chinese traffic settings in tourism, and the carbon emission system of the entire life cycle of traffic settings is analyzed, and the boundary of the impact of traffic carbon emissions on tourism is determined. In response to this problem, it is necessary to reform and optimize the transportation facility of the carbon emission accounting method, which has a positive effect on the green development and low-carbon development of the Chinese economy for ecotourism and transportation infrastructure. As impacted by climate change and further global warming, drought turns out to be the most frequent meteorological extreme event worldwide, which severely affects agriculture, ecosystem, water management, and even human survival. In this study, the global pattern and development trends and directions on drought monitoring were presented based on Web of Science database by conducting a bibliometric analysis from 1983 to 2020. The following conclusions were drawn. 1) The United States and China were found as the most productive and influential nations, accounting for 24.63% and 14.30% in publication outputs and taking up 5,023 and 2,040 in local citations, respectively. 2) Chinese Academy of Science was reported as the core institution with 5.73% publication outputs and 829 local citations. 3) Remote Sensing of Environment and Remote Sensing were found as the most influential journals and the most productive journals with 1,045 local citations and 210 publication outputs, respectively. 4) Agricultural drought profoundly affecting food security was found as the most concerning drought type in the world. The drought monitoring research mainly focus on the research and development of drought index, the response of terrestrial ecosystems to drought, and the trends and dynamics of drought in context of climate change. This study explored key findings, contradictions, and limitations of drought monitoring studies were summarized and explored. The summer monsoon–affected area is a suitable area for agricultural production in China. Against the background of climate warming, the activity of the summer monsoon is changing significantly. The drought and flood disasters in this region are becoming more and more frequent and have a greater and more serious impact on agricultural production. Therefore, based on observational data from meteorological stations and yield loss data in agriculture caused by drought and flood disasters in summer monsoon–affected areas, this paper studied the characteristics of the hazard of disaster-causing factors, the risk of losses to agriculture caused by droughts and floods, and their correlation. Moreover, it compared and analyzed the variability of drought and flood hazard and risk to agriculture before and after a temperature rise. The results showed that the precipitation in summer monsoon–affected areas is obviously affected by monsoon activities, and there is an overall though non-significant positive correlation between annual average standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) and the summer monsoon activity index (MI). The drought disaster comprehensive loss rate (DCLR) was generally higher than the flood disaster comprehensive loss rate (FCLR). This shows that the impact of drought on agriculture production is significantly greater than that of floods in this area. The high hazard and risk areas for drought were mainly distributed along the edge of the summer monsoon area and in its vicinity, whereas the high hazard and risk areas for flooding were mainly distributed in the lower reach of the Yangtze, Songhua, and Liaohe Rivers. Among them, Liaoning, Jilin and Heilongjiang are high-risk superposition areas of drought and flood disasters. The hazards of drought and flood dominate the risk of disaster loss. Climate warming has significantly expanded the high-hazard and high-risk ranges in China for drought and flood disasters and has also changed their spatial distribution patterns. The high-hazard area for drought has shifted to the monsoon edge area, the high-risk area for drought has moved northward, and both the high-hazard and the high-risk areas for floods have clearly moved southward. The impact of climate warming on drought was more significant than on floods. The 2019 death of the female Swinhoes soft‐shelled turtle (Rafetus swinhoei) individual in China put this species in a dire conservation state. To avoid the loss of genetic information from the female individual and facilitate the protection and preservation of R. swinhoei, we sequenced and assembled its draft chromosome‐level genome by combining BGISEQ short reads, Nanopore long reads, and Hi‐C sequencing reads. We characterized its potential ZZ/ZW sex determination system. Phylogeny and divergence time analyses indicated that R. swinhoei has a close relationship with Pelodiscus sinensis, and they shared a common ancestor ~54.4 Ma. Population history analyses indicated that R. swinhoei has the lowest heterozygosity among all turtles examined, and its population size has declined dramatically over the past 10 million years. Many core genes involved in autophagy and DNA damage response, such as Rab5a and Parp1, were under positive selection and/or evolving rapidly, and these genes may make important contributions to the long lifespan and evolutionary adaptation of R. swinhoei. The loss of several tooth‐related genes in turtle genomes explains the genetic basis of their toothless phenotype. This study not only provides a genomic resource for scientists to study the species using the strategy of comparative genomics, but also provides a data basis for us to find more potential R. swinhoei individuals in the wild. The impacts of climate change on ecosystem productivity and water resources over a long term in China are not well quantified. Precipitation-use efficiency (PUE) is a key parameter that describes carbon and water exchange in terrestrial ecosystems. Research on the response of regional PUE to climate change and its driving forces is of great significance to climate-change mitigation and the sustainable development of regional ecology. Based on an improved actual evapotranspiration (ETa) model, the responses of ETa, net primary productivity (NPP), and PUE to climate change in different climatic regions of China were analyzed; the contributions of various environmental factors to PUE changes were quantified; and the conversion characteristics and regulatory mechanisms of the PUE regime in different climatic regions were identified. The results indicate that the improved ETa model, after considering the limiting effect of energy on ETa in humid regions, can simulate the ETa distribution in China well. Over the past 58 years (1960–2017), ETa and NPP have increased in the western regions and decreased in the eastern regions, with the boundary at 103° E. PUE presents a "low-high-low" spatial distribution from northwest to southeast in China. It is noteworthy that there was a zonal distribution for a high value area of PUE, which coincided with the summer monsoon transition zone. The soil moisture (SM) increase in arid regions is the main driving force of the PUE increase, whereas the annual net radiation (Rn) change in humid regions is the main driving force of the PUE change. Based on the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI), a significant increase after the mid-1990s is detected in the annual number of days with drought in the zonal belt from southern Xinjiang to southern Northeast China and North China. This change features the predominant mode of the annual number of days with drought in China. Meanwhile, two significant breakpoints in 1981 and 2001 indicate a continuous increase of days with drought in the meridional belt from eastern Northwest China to eastern Southwest China. The increase in days with drought is closely related to the significant warming in the zonal belt but is attributed to both the increase of temperature and the decrease of precipitation in the meridional belt. The typical circulation patterns responsible for the increase of days with drought comprise a wave train stretching from North Atlantic to East Asia, the generally anomalous high pressure over China, the northerly anomalies prevailing over northern and central China, and the suppressed convection in most of the zonal and meridional belt. Both the AMO and the PDO after the 1980s have a close relationship with the interdecadal variation of the number of days with drought. On one hand, either a positive AMO phase or negative PDO phase motivates the typical circulation patterns favorable for the occurrence of drought. On the other hand, both the AMO and PDO affect the warming in the zonal and meridional belt, and the PDO is also closely connected with the precipitation in the meridional belt. As a land–atmosphere coupling "hot spot", the northern China climate transition zone has a sharp spatial gradient of hydrothermal conditions, which plays an essential role in shaping the spatial and temporal pattern of evapotranspiration-precipitation coupling, but whose mechanisms still remain unclear. This study analyzes the spatial and temporal variation in land–atmosphere coupling strength (CS) in the climate transitional zone of northern China and its relationship with soil moisture and air temperature. Results show that CS gradually transitions from strong positive in the northwest to negative in the southeast and northeast corners. The spatial distribution of CS is closely related to climatic hydrothermal conditions, where soil moisture plays a more dominant role: CS increases first, and then decreases with increasing soil moisture, with the threshold of soil moisture at 0.2; CS gradually transitions from positive to negative at soil moisture between 0.25 and 0.35; CS shows an exponential decreasing trend with increasing temperature. In terms of temporal variation, CS is strongest in spring and weakens sequentially in summer, autumn, and winter, and has significant interdecadal fluctuations. The trend in CS shifts gradually from significantly negative in the west to a non-significant positive in the east. Soil moisture variability dominates the intra-annual variability of CS in the study regions, and determines the interannual variation of CS in arid and semi-arid areas. Moreover, the main reason for the positive and negative spatial differences in CS in the study area is the different driving regime of evapotranspiration (ET). ET is energy-limited in the southern part of the study area, leading to a positive correlation between ET and lifting condensation level (LCL), while in most of the northern part, ET is water-limited and is negatively correlated with LCL; LCL has a negative correlation with P across the study area, thus leading to a negative ET-P coupling in the south and a positive coupling in the north. Currently, the reports on esophageal endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) assisted by traction with a snare are rare. Because a snare is a commonly used endoscopic accessory and is easily available, its application in mucosal traction is worth exploring. The present study aims to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of snare-endoclip traction-assisted ESD for esophageal intraepithelial neoplasia. Cases of esophageal intraepithelial neoplasia resected using ESD in the Digestive Endoscopy Center of Guangzhou Nanfang Hospital, China from June 2013 to March 2019 were retrospectively analyzed. The procedure of snare-endoclip traction-assisted ESD was compared with nontraction-assisted ESD by using a propensity score matching analysis. Operation time, en bloc and R0 resection, intra- and postoperative complications, and surgery-related costs were mainly evaluated. Overall, 99 cases of esophageal intraepithelial neoplasia under tissue biopsy were included in the present study. Further, 22 exact matched pairs were obtained. There were no differences in en bloc and R0 resection rates, intra- and postoperative complications, and costs of disposable surgical accessories between the traction group and the nontraction group. However, median operation time showed a significant difference: traction group, 50.0 min (range, 20–100 min); nontraction group, 70.0 min (range, 35–133 min), P =0.012. In conclusion, snare-endoclip traction-assisted ESD for esophageal intraepithelial neoplasia was safe and shortened operation time in the study, thereby improving the efficiency of ESD. • Spatial distribution of drought onset time decreased with an increase in regional wetness in China. • Drought onset speed was higher in the southern humid region than that in the northern region. • Drought onset was accelerated after 1994, particularly in regions with precipitation range from 300 mm to 600 mm. • The greater the warming magnitude, the wetter the region, the faster the drought onset. • Increased water deficiency was the main reason for the accelerating drought onset. This study investigated the effects of warming on the drought onset in China using meteorological data and soil moisture data from 1980 to 2020. The variation characteristics of drought onset time and onset speed were analyzed systematically. The differences in drought onset time and onset speed during the period 1995–2020 and the period 1980–1994 were compared, and possible impact factors were analyzed. Results indicated that the spatial distribution of drought onset time decreased with an increase in regional wetness in China. In arid regions, onset time at 73 % of sites was over 35 days, and about 13 % was among 60–90 days. In semi-arid and sub-humid regions, the onset time was 25–40 days, and in humid regions, it was 20–30 days. After 1994, namely the significant temperature rise period, the onset time has remarkably shortened in parts of the southern Northeast, North China, the eastern Northwest, the western Southwest, the middle of Tibet, the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, and the coastal region of South China. The shortening was most obvious in sub-humid regions. The greater the warming magnitude, the wetter the region, the faster the drought onset speed. Drought onset speed (γ) was higher in the southern humid region than that in the northern region, and γ for southern Northeast China, northern North China, and eastern Northwest China was higher than that for the rest of North China. After 1994, drought onset speed was accelerated in most regions, especially in the semi-arid and sub-humid regions with precipitation in the range of 300–600 mm. Under the combined effect of increased evapotranspiration and reduced precipitation, the region has been the hot spot with increased drought speed after obvious warming in China. The transportation sector has played an important role during the COVID-19 pandemic. Like many industries, it experienced a sharp decline during the pandemic. The reduced traffic consumption has been caused by objective conditions, such as traffic control measures, and subjective factors, such as the perception of the COVID-19 pandemic. This study uses the computable general equilibrium (CGE) model to examine the economic impacts of traffic consumption during the COVID-19 pandemic in China. Moreover, to evaluate the impact of the government's economic stimulus policy related to transportation, this study examines the policy effects of transportation investment. This study suggests that, first, China's macroeconomy has been severely affected by reduced traffic consumption. The period when the pandemic was most severe had the largest GDP decrease (0.49%). Second, transportation consumption is closely associated with the output of all industries. As the pandemic worsens, the output of all sectors declines more. Of the transport sectors, road transport has the largest output decrease (10.17%), followed by railway (1.76%) and air sectors (1.53%). The service industry is the most negatively affected among the non-transportation sectors. Finally, transportation infrastructure investment can effectively promote the economy and create jobs. In addition, railway investment plays a more positive role in the economy than road and air transports. Statistical downscaling is an effective way to downscale General Circulation Model (GCM) outputs to a finer temporal and spatial scale. Here, we proposed and trained a new station‐based non‐linear regression downscaling (SNRD) approach, and quantitatively demonstrated its better performance than linear regression model. In addition, we also compared the SNRD method with the Bias Correction Spatial Disaggregation (BCSD) method, which has been widely applied on downscaling precipitation. Results indicated that RMSEs and residuals of the BCSD method are 4.6–31 times as ones of SNRD in each region of China during validation period (2004–2015). Besides, with historical in‐situ observed monthly mean precipitation as the benchmark, SNRD downscaled model modified the over‐estimation (1.25–2 times as observed precipitation) flaw of BCSD model in rainy season (June–August) of China, which could provide assistance on the further researches on drought events in rainy season in future. Further, we also surprisingly found that the 2,500 m was the threshold height for statistical downscaling models. Both BCSD and SNRD downscaled precipitation displayed more steadily and accurately above 2,500 m, since there are less intense human activities in China. Previous studies have found that geopolitical risk (GPR) caused by geopolitical events such as terrorist attacks can affect the movements of asset prices. However, the studies on whether and how these influences can explain and predict the volatility of stock returns in emerging markets are scant and emerging. By using the data from China's CSI 300 index, we provide some evidence on whether and how the GPR factors can explain and forecast the volatility of stock returns in emerging economies. We employed the GARCH-MIDAS model and the model confidence set (MCS) to investigate the mechanism of GPR's impact on the China stock market, and we considered the GPR index, geopolitical action index, geopolitical threat index, and different country-specific GPR indices. The empirical results suggest that except for a few emerging economies such as Mexico, Argentina, Russia, India, South Africa, Thailand, Israel, and Ukraine, the global and most of the regional GPR have a significant impact on China's stock market. This paper provides some evidence for the different effects of GPR from different countries on China's stock market volatility. As for predictive potential, GPRAct (geopolitical action index) has the best predictive power among all six types of GPR indices. Considering that GPR is usually unanticipated, these findings shed light on the role of the GPR factors in explaining and forecasting the volatility of China's market returns. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Social support is an important health determinant and may affect dietary behaviors. The purpose of this study was to examine the relations between perceived social support and the Chinese Diet Balance Index-16 (DBI-16) among ethnic minority groups in Southwest China.Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted between May 2019 and August 2020 among six ethnic minority groups native to Yunnan Province (n = 3564). Perceived social support from family, friends and significant others were measured with the Multi-dimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS). Dietary data were obtained using a 100-item Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) and a lifestyle questionnaire. Lower Bound Score (LBS), Higher Bound Score (HBS) and Diet Quality Distance (DQD) which represent inadequate, excessive and unbalanced food intake respectively were calculated to measure the compliance with the recommendations of the Dietary Guidelines for Chinese 2016.Results: One thousand four hundred ninety-six men and two thousand sixty-eight women were included. 51.2% of the subjects had moderate or high levels of inadequate intake; 21.3% had moderate or high levels of excessive intake; and 74.0% had moderate or high levels of unbalanced dietary intake. With potential confounders adjusted, support from family was negatively associated with inadequate intake, while support from friends was positively associated with inadequate and excessive intake. No significant associations were found between perceived social support from significant others and diet quality indicators.Conclusions: An unbalanced diet is common among adults of the ethnic minority groups in Yunnan Province, Southwest China. Background: Few studies have focused on the influencing factors of dietary practices among ethnic minority groups in China, particularly from a social capital perspective. Methods: Between May and September 2019, we conducted a cross-sectional survey among adults (n = 1,813) from three ethnic minority communities (A Chang, De Ang and Jing Po) in Yunnan Province, Southwest China. Dietary intakes during the past 12 months were measured with a 100-item Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ), and two forms of social capital (bonding and bridging) were measured using the validated Personal Social Capital Scale 16 (PSCS-16). Principal component factor analysis was used to derive dietary patterns from 20 food groups. Multivariate linear regressions were used to examine the associations between social capital and dietary patterns. Results: Two distinct dietary patterns were identified: the traditional and the modern. The traditional pattern was characterized by high consumptions of tubers, poultry, rice, fruits, vegetables and low consumptions of oil and salt, whereas the modern pattern was highly correlated with egg, nut, beverage, snack and oil consumptions. After adjusted for potential confounders, the modern pattern was positively associated with bonding capital (β = 0.066; 95%CI: 0.058, 0.075) and negatively associated with bridging capital (β = -0.017; 95%CI: -0.024, -0.010). The application of composite materials in bogies for high‐speed electric multiple units (EMUs) has been regarded as a technical breakthrough. The application of composite materials in rail vehicles began late in China. Currently, most composite materials are used in non‐load‐bearing components on the track, and applications in bogies, tie beams, and other load‐bearing components are not mature. In this paper, we innovatively apply a design strategy using thin‐ply on the composite bolster of a bogie for a multiple unit to optimize the static strength of the composite structure under very complex loading. We applied nine unconventional loads and 11 major operating loads in total to evaluate a potential positive influence of using thin‐ply on the static strength of the composite bolster of a bogie. The numerical results showed that for all the complex loading scenarios, the application of thin‐ply could effectively improve the static strength of the composite structure, which is more effective at the location of the bolts and holes. The research results break through the traditional design ideas of composite structures and provide an effective ply design and optimization strategy for composite structure design engineering of high‐speed EMU. This paper examines the development modes of inland ports based on the economic models and the Chinese empirical cases. After reviewing the recent policies in China, four modes, i.e., the government-driven mode, the seaport-driven, the market-driven mode and the corridor-effect mode, are established to describe the development of Chinese inland ports from the perspective of the driving forces. Moreover, we setup an economic model to compare them and conclude that (1) the seaport-driven mode promotes the larger inland port than the corridor-effect mode and the market-driven mode; (2) if the marginal capacity investment cost is low or the efficiency of the inland port is high enough, the corridor-effect mode leads to higher social welfare than the market-driven mode and the seaport-driven mode; (3) whether the government-driven mode promotes the larger inland port and higher social welfare than the other modes depends on the positive externality from the inland port to the social welfare; (4) The 'Go west' policy and the Belt and Road Initiative (B&R) promote the inland port capacity under all modes. The COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns led to a sharp drop in socio-economic activities in China in 2020, including reductions in fossil fuel use, industry productions, and traffic volumes. The short-term impacts of lockdowns on China's air quality have been measured and reported, however, the changes in anthropogenic emissions have not yet been assessed quantitatively, which hinders our understanding of the causes of the air quality changes during COVID-19. Here, for the first time, we report the anthropogenic air pollutant emissions from mainland China by using a bottom-up approach based on the near-real-time data in 2020 and use the estimated emissions to simulate air quality changes with a chemical transport model. The COVID-19 lockdown was estimated to have reduced China's anthropogenic emissions substantially between January and March in 2020, with the largest reductions in February. Emissions of SO 2 , NO x , CO, non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOCs), and primary PM 2.5 were estimated to have decreased by 27 %, 36 %, 28 %, 31 %, and 24 %, respectively, in February 2020 compared to the same month in 2019. The reductions in anthropogenic emissions were dominated by the industry sector for SO 2 and PM 2.5 and were contributed to approximately equally by the industry and transportation sectors for NO x , CO, and NMVOCs. With the spread of coronavirus controlled, China's anthropogenic emissions rebounded in April and since then returned to the comparable levels of 2019 in the second half of 2020. The provinces in China have presented nearly synchronous decline and rebound in anthropogenic emissions, while Hubei and the provinces surrounding Beijing recovered more slowly due to the extension of lockdown measures. The ambient air pollution presented much lower concentrations during the first 3 months in 2020 than in 2019 while rapidly returning to comparable levels afterward, which have been reproduced by the air quality model simulation driven by our estimated emissions. The ecological conservation and high-quality development of the Yellow River Basin (YRB) has been the prime strategy of China. Wherein, the Inner Mongolia reach of the Yellow River Basin (IM-YRB) is a critical ecological barrier in northern China, playing an unshakable position in ecological and food security in the YRB. However, evaluation of ecological conditions and relevant driving factors have not aroused considerable concerns. Here we propose an ecological degradation index system based on the Pressure-State-Response (PSR) multi-scale comprehensive assessment framework and evaluate the ecological environment degradation intensity in the IM-YRB during 2000 to 2018. We find continual degradation of the ecological environment with increasing degradation intensity in the IM-YRB during 2000 to 2018. Moreover, we quantify that 24.16% of the IM-YRB had highly significant degradation (99% confidence level) of the ecological environment. The areas with significant degradation (95% confidence level) of the ecological environment accounted for 57.19% of the IM-YRB. The population density, land use, coal mining and fires are the main influencing factors behind ecological environment degradation in the IM-YRB. In addition, there occurred widespread land use conversion (>50% of the study region in area) amongst grassland, arable land, sands, construction land and unused land and these land conversions can be found mainly in the Yinshan Mountains (from grassland to abandoned land, the Hetao Irrigation District (from grassland to arable land) and the Kubuqi Desert (from sand, arable land and unused land to grassland). Background: Autosomal recessive cutis laxa type IC (ARCL IC, MIM: #613177) results from a mutation in the LTBP4 gene (MIM: #604710) on chromosome 19q13. Case presentation: A 28-day-old Chinese infant with generalized cutis laxa accompanied by impaired pulmonary, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, retinal hemorrhage, abnormality of coagulation and hyperbilirubinemia was admitted to our hospital. To find out the possible causes of these symptoms, whole-exome sequencing was performed on the infant. Two novel pathogenic frame-shift variants [c.605_606delGT (p.Ser204fs * 8) and c.1719delC (p.Arg574fs * 199)] of the LTBP4 gene associated with ARCL IC were found which was later verified by Sanger sequencing. The pathogenicity of mutations was subsequently assessed by several software programs and databases. In addition, an analytical review on the clinical phenotypes of the disease previously reported in literature was performed. Conclusions: This is the first report of a Chinese infant with ARCL IC in China due to novel pathogenic variations of LTBP4. Southern China is a major grain-producing area, but has been suffering from increasingly serious droughts caused by global warming. As a result, crop losses have become serious. To provide insights into these losses, we obtained data to support a systematic and comprehensive analysis of how agricultural drought has caused crop losses from 1961 to 2011 and of the relationship between these changes and the climatic factors responsible for the losses. We found an obvious increase in the loss of crops due to agricultural drought in southern China, with the greatest increase in crop loss in the southwest and smaller increases in the south and southeast. Moreover, because each crop growth stage is affected differently by climatic factors and because the values of these factors show an uneven seasonal distribution, the losses were greatest when changes in various climatic factors occurred during key crop developmental periods. The fittings of the relationship between crop loss and various climatic factors was often strongest based on data from key developmental periods rather than based on data for the whole year. In addition, we found improved prediction of losses using multiple regression, and developed a model for assessing crop losses. Based on daily meteorological data from 693 weather stations for the period 1960–2017, the characteristics of dryness/wetness trends and their relation with reference crop evapotranspiration (ET0) and precipitation changes were assessed in China. The results showed that the semi-arid/semi-humid areas and humid areas of southwestern China experienced a drying trend, while the arid areas in northwestern China and the humid areas in southern China became wetter over the past 58 years. The dryness/wetness trends were highly sensitive to the variability of ET0 in the arid and semi-arid areas and to precipitation in the humid and semi-humid areas. Regional differences in the contributions of ET0 and precipitation to the dryness/wetness trends were significant. In the arid areas, the average contribution of ET0 was 7% larger than that of precipitation, except in winter. A decreased ET0 due to a reduction in wind speed and the increase in precipitation led to a wetting trend in these areas. In the semi-arid/semi-humid areas, ET0 had a significantly larger effect on the dryness/wetness trends than precipitation. Contribution of ET0 was about 21% larger than that of precipitation in spring and about 7% larger at the annual timescale. Due to an increase in ET0 because of rising temperature and decrease in precipitation, the areas tended to be drier. In humid areas, precipitation was the dominant factor for the wetting trends. Contribution of precipitation was about 4 to 10% larger than that of ET0 in summer and at the annual timescale and even completely dominated the trend of SPEI in winter. However, contribution of ET0 in spring was slightly larger than that of precipitation in the humid areas, and a significant increase in temperature led to an increase in ET0 and resulted in a tendency of dryness. Aside from the reduction in precipitation, increased evapotranspiration had comparable contributions to the trends of dryness, even greater than that of precipitation in the drying season and in drying areas. Hypotheses about the mechanisms of community assembly suggest that biotic and abiotic filters constrain species establishment through selection on their functional traits. It is unclear how differences in traits influence the niche dimensions of closely related bird species when they coexist in spatiotemporally heterogeneous environments. Further, it is necessary to take into account their participation in mixed‐species flocks, social systems that can include both competition and facilitation. For 6 yr, we conducted counts of forest bird species and took measurements of environmental variables along an elevational gradient in the Nanling Mountains, China. To disentangle different deterministic and historical/stochastic processes between flocking and nonflocking bird assemblages, we first compared phylogenetic and functional structure, and community‐weighted mean trait values (CWM). We further assessed elevational variations in trait–environment relationships. We found that the flocking and nonflocking bird assemblages were structured by environmental gradients in contrasting ways. The nonflocking assemblage showed a strong change from over‐dispersed to clustered community structure with increasing elevations, consistent with the strong selective pressures of a harsh environment (i.e., environmental filtering). The nonflocking assemblage also displayed significant trait–environment relationships in bivariate correlations and multivariate ordination space, including specific morphological and foraging traits that are linked to vegetation characteristics (e.g., short trees at high elevations). By contrast, flocking birds were more resilient to habitat change with elevation, with relatively consistent community membership, and showed fewer trait–environment associations. CWM of traits that are known to be associated with species' propensity to join mixed‐species flocks, including small body size and broad habitat specificity, were linked to the flocking assemblage consistently across the elevational gradient. Collectively, our trait‐based analyses provide strong evidence that trait–environment relationships differ between flocking and nonflocking bird assemblages. Besides serving as bellwethers of changing environments, emergent properties of flock systems may increase the resilience of animal communities undergoing environmental change. Mixed‐species flocks present an ideal model with which to explore cooccurrence of closely related species, because habitat filtering may be buffered, and the patterns observed are therefore the outcomes of species interactions including both competition and facilitation. There are various types of climate transitional zones on the earth's surface. The East Asian summer monsoon transition zone (EASMTZ) has attracted much attention due to its multiple roles. It is where most of the semi-arid regions locate in China, and semi-arid climate is unstable relative to the arid climate to its north and humid climate to its south. Therefore, EASMTZ is very sensitive to climate changes, and its land-atmosphere interaction (LA-I) is active and crucial. The LA-I is significantly affected by the complex land surface conditions and closely related to the summer monsoon climate dynamics. The LA-I and its response to summer monsoon activities is thus complicated. It includes multi-feedback mechanisms, which involve the land surface thermal-hydrological-ecological couplings, multi-interface exchanges from near surface to the free atmosphere. These feedbacks are sensitive to the summer monsoon activities. Based on a summary of the unique characteristics of EASMTZ and the main research progresses in LA-I in recent years, the issues related to LA-I are discussed in this region. Finally, the key scientific issues faced by the LA-I are proposed, and the future focuses are summarized. This work should help for the future study on the LA-I and its response to summer monsoon activities in the EASMTZ, which should contribute to the understanding of the increasing drought frequency associated with the significant warming trend in this region. Maize is a major crop in the semiarid region of northwestern China, and, in recent years, severe drought events have often severely impacted local maize production. In this paper, an assessment model for maize drought vulnerability in the semiarid region of northwestern China was constructed after an in-depth analysis of factors linked to drought vulnerability. The model establishes an evaluation index system for drought vulnerability and assesses the level of environmental sensitivity, degree of exposure, crop sensitivity, and adaptability. An assessment and a regionalization analysis of maize drought vulnerability were then conducted for the semiarid region of northwestern China. The results showed the spatial distribution characteristics of environmental sensitivity, degree of exposure, crop sensitivity, and adaptability. The high and sub high vulnerable areas for maize were located mainly in the northern and southern parts of the warm temperate zone (District I A) and covered most of the central region of the middle temperature zone (District II A). The low and sub low vulnerable areas were in the central part of District I A, in the eastern and western part of District II A, and across the whole of the warm temperate zone (Districts I B), the middle temperature zone (Districts II B), and the plateau area of the sub temperate zone (District III). The main factors affecting high drought vulnerability varied across different areas. These results provide a theoretical basis for the risk management of maize production and will help prevent drought disasters in the semiarid region of northwestern China. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A combined study of petrology and geochemistry was carried out for granulites from the Tongbai orogen in central China. The results reveal the tectonic evolution from collisional thickening to extensional thinning of the lithosphere at the convergent plate boundary. Petrographic observations, zircon U–Pb dating, and pseudosection calculations indicate that the granulites underwent four metamorphic stages, which are categorized into two cycles. The first cycle occurred at 490–450 Ma and involves high‐P (HP) metamorphism (M1) at 785–815°C and 10–14 kbar followed by decompressional heating to 840–880°C and 8–9 kbar for medium‐pressure granulite facies metamorphism (M2), defining a clockwise P–T path. The high pressure is indicated by the occurrence of inclusions of rutile+kyanite+K‐feldspar in the garnet mantle. The second cycle occurred at c. 440 Ma and shows an anticlockwise P–T path with continuous heating to ultrahigh‐temperature (UHT) metamorphism (M3) at 890–980°C and 9–11 kbar, followed by decompressional cooling to 740–880°C and 7–9 kbar (M4) till 405 Ma. The HP metamorphism is synchronous with the ultrahigh‐pressure eclogite facies metamorphism in the Qinling orogen, indicating its relevance to the continental collision in the Cambrian. The UHT metamorphism took place at reduced pressures, indicating thinning of the collision‐thickened orogenic lithosphere. Therefore, the Tongbai orogen was initially thickened by the collisional orogeny and then thinned, possibly as a result of foundering of the orogenic root. Historically, China has experienced frequent barrier lake breach hazards, and several cases have been monitored during their occurrences using complete breach flood hydrographs. These have enabled the analysis of dam breaches to be improved by merging hydraulics and soil mechanics expertise. Some novel improvements to analytical methods have also been published. This study presents the authors' proposed hyperbolic soil erosion and lateral enlargement models, together with a numerical algorithm that enables easy calculation of the breach flood hydrograph. In general, the peak flows calculated using this improved method agree with field measurements and are less sensitive to input parameters. The research outcomes are presented on an Excel spreadsheet (DB‐IWHR, online download available), and these are self‐explanatory with minimal tutorials. This software will be of particular use in an emergency situation, when it is necessary to quickly evaluate the breach flood. Aim: Most studies of diversity changes along elevational gradients show a synchronous change in taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic diversity, such that all decline with elevation or show a mid‐elevation peak. However, some studies show asynchronous changes, which challenge us to explain their assembly. Here we used functional trait variation and niche spacing to test the roles of environmental filtering and competition‐driven niche separation in assembly and biodiversity patterns across an elevational gradient. Location: Nanling Mountains, southern China. Taxon: Birds (Timaliidae, Pycnonotidae and Sylviidae) Methods: Breeding birds were surveyed in 2012–2017 from 300 to 1900 m ASL. We tested bird diversity pattern and community structure relevant to environmental filtering and limiting similarity by integrating functional traits and evolutionary distances, as well as vegetation heterogeneity. A null modelling approach tested specific trait variation and niche spacing in relation to habitat associations and niche segregation. Results: Contrary to expectation, bird richness peaked at just below the highest site, and functional diversity declined significantly with elevation. Functional–phylogenetic distance metrics converged with increasing elevation, corresponding to strong environmental filtering and habitat change. For the spatial arrangement of specific traits, restricted dispersal ability, elevational range and clutch sizes were related to filtering effects, as indicated by trait convergence in clustered highland bird assemblages. Conversely, overdispersed lowland assemblages have evenly spaced trait values predicted by limiting similarity, including bill length, vertical stratum‐use and flocking propensity. In addition, bird functional diversity was highly correlated with both vegetation productivity and tree height, which reinforces the role of filtering in structuring local bird assemblages. Main conclusions: This study highlights how strong filtering can produce a counter‐intuitive, contrasting pattern of changes between species richness and functional diversity. Fundamental assembly processes and species roles in ecosystems are predictable through examining key traits of life‐history and foraging characteristics, and their associations with environmental variables. This paper studies the impacts of El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on wintertime extreme precipitation in China from 1961 to 2017, and possibly different influences of two El Niño types are also examined. We find that ENSO poses profound influences on extreme precipitation in many portions of China. El Niño (La Niña) intensifies (weakens) the winter precipitation extremes in southeastern China (SEC) and slightly weakens (intensifies) those in central-north China, mainly by changing the frequency rather than the intensity of extreme precipitation. Further analysis suggests that the East Asian winter monsoon tends to be weaker during El Niño winters, suppressing the southward invasion of cold dry air. Via the weakened Walker circulation, El Niño also triggers anomalously descending motion and anticyclone over the western North Pacific (WNP), which exhibits southwesterly anomalies over SEC and is thus conducive to the transport of sufficient moisture into that area. The changes over WNP are also accompanied by ascending motions over East Asia via a local meridional circulation alike the Pacific–Japan pattern. Meanwhile, El Niño induces a southward-displaced East Asian jet stream, as characterized by intensified westerly over southern China, corresponding to anomalously ascending motion there. Together, these changes facilitate the updrafts of circulations and the condensation of water vapor, thus increasing the occurrence of extreme precipitation events in SEC. Moreover, we find that different Niño types exhibit distinct subregional influences. In particular, the canonical eastern Pacific El Niño significantly increases the frequency of extreme precipitation in South China, whereas the Modoki central Pacific El Niño mainly impacts that in East China.
