This paper presents a testing and numerical study on the deformation behaviours of marine clays from Jinzhou Bay, China, where a large-scale artificial island is under construction for the Dalian offshore airport. The mechanical behaviours of marine clays were investigated by laboratory tests, triaxial creep tests and centrifugal test. An elasto-viscoplastic constitutive model (Adachi-Oka model) and a finite element programme (CFEM 2D) were used to calculate the deformation of the marine clays. The validation of the elasto-viscoplastic model and finite element programme was initially verified by the numerical simulation of triaxial creep test and the centrifugal test. In addition, the settlement of the large-scale artificial island was calculated by the verified programme, which accounted for the effect of non-linear hydraulic conductivity. The calculated results show that differential settlement exists between functional areas, with the greatest post-construction settlement attaining 288 cm in 100 years. Uneven distribution of excess pore water pressure also exists, and does not fully dissipate in 100 years. The compacted clay cover systems of landfills were studied for desiccation cracks (dry crack or thowing crack for climate). The niechanism of a new type of evapotranspiration cover was analyzed to promote the engineering performance. On the basis of considering precipitation and evaporation, a one-dimensional dynamic model was developed for simulating moisture transport in evapotranspiration landfill cover. Volumetric water content was simulated based on the data of precipitation and evaporation of Dalian in 1976. Result of simulation is analyzed. It is apparent that the moisture content near the surface is highly sensitive to climate loading, but the effect is significantly attenuated and time-lagged along with increasing depth. Moisture content of barrier soil layer is partially saturated. Evapotranspiration landfill cover (thickness:150 cm)is absolutely able to resist strong precipitation which is the heaviest one in 48 a of Dalian. Parametric analyses are conducted to simulate variations in precipitation rate, precipitation event duration and barrier soil layer thickness. The experimental data are used to provide a quantitative verification of the model. The model simulations are compared with the data, which reasonably agree with model simulation. A novel endophytic actinobacterium, designated strain YIM 67072(T), was isolated from healthy roots of Dysophylla stellata (Lour.) Benth. Cells of this aerobic, cream-yellow-coloured strain occurred singly, in pairs or in tetrads, were Gram-stain-positive and ovoid- to spherical-shaped. Strain YIM 67072(T) grew at 4-45 °C, pH 5.0-10.0 and in the presence of 0-7 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain YIM 67072(T) belonged to the genus Rothia. The isolate contained MK-7 as the major component of the quinone system. The peptidoglycan type was A3α. The polar lipid profile consisted predominantly of diphosphatidylglycerol and glycolipids. The major fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0. The DNA G+C content was 53.2 mol%. However, strain YIM 67072(T) differed from its closest relatives Rothia nasimurium CCUG 35957(T) (98.5 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity), Rothia amarae JCM 11375(T) (97.6 %) and Rothia terrae L-143(T) (97.3 %) in many phenotypic characteristics. Moreover, the levels of DNA-DNA relatedness between the novel isolate and the three above-mentioned type strains were 28.7±1.3 %, 36.5±1.2 %, 46.8±1.5 %, respectively. Based on comparative analysis of physiological and chemotaxonomic data, strain YIM 67072(T) represents a novel species of the genus Rothia, for which the name Rothia endophytica sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is YIM 67072(T) ( = DSM 26247(T) = JCM 18541(T)).

Background and Purpose: The Intensive Blood Pressure Reduction In Acute Cerebral Haemorrhage Trial (INTERACT) study suggests that early intensive blood pressure (BP) lowering can attenuate hematoma growth at 24 hours after intracerebral hemorrhage. The present analyses aimed to determine the effects of treatment on hematoma and perihematomal edema over 72 hours., Methods: INTERACT included 404 patients with CT-confirmed intracerebral hemorrhage, elevated systolic BP (150 to 220 mm Hg), and capacity to start BP-lowering treatment within 6 hours of intracerebral hemorrhage. Patients were randomly assigned to an intensive (target systolic BP 140 mmHg) or standard guideline-based management of BP (target systolic BP 180 mm Hg) using routine intravenous agents. Baseline and repeat CTs (24 and 72 hours) were performed using standardized techniques with digital images analyzed centrally. Outcomes were increases in hematoma and perihematomal edema volumes over 72 hours., Results: Overall, 296 patients had all 3 CT scans available for the hematoma and 270 for the edema analyses. Mean systolic BP was 11.7 mm Hg lower in the intensive group than in the guideline group during 1 to 24 hours. Adjusted mean absolute increases in hematoma volumes (mL) at 24 and 72 hours were 2.40 and 0.15 in the guideline group compared with -0.74 and -2.31 in the intensive group, respectively, an overall difference of 2.80 (95% CI, 1.04 to 4.56; P=0.002). Adjusted mean absolute increases in edema volumes (mL) at 24 and 72 hours were 6.27 and 10.02 in the guideline group compared with 4.19 and 7.34 in the intensive group, respectively, for an overall difference of 2.38 (95% CI, -0.45 to 5.22; P=0.10)., Conclusions: Early intensive BP-lowering treatment attenuated hematoma growth over 72 hours in intracerebral hemorrhage. There were no appreciable effects on perihematomal edema.
