Objective: The purpose of this study is to construct an organ system-centered undergraduate nursing professional training model and explore its application effect. Methods: This study is divided into two steps. In the early stage, literature review and expert consultation were used to establish the training mode (curriculum and assessment standard) of nursing undergraduate specialty based on organ system reform. Secondly, a cross-sectional survey method was used to investigate the training quality of nursing students who graduated from Jinzhou Medical University from 2007 to 2017 under this model. Results: A five-module curriculum system was established, including general courses, public basic courses, professional education courses, expanding elective courses and concentrated practical teaching. Under the teaching reform of organ system, the nursing graduates of Jinzhou Medical University, who are mainly employed in public hospitals, are generally not satisfied with their jobs, salaries, contents and prospects. Their overall satisfaction with their alma mater is very high; Graduates have certain independent core competence; Employers are basically satisfied with graduates. Leptosphaerulina leaf spot, caused by Leptosphaerulina trifolii, is a major disease of alfalfa (Medicago sativa), leading to noticeable losses. From 2022 to 2023, we collected samples of alfalfa with symptoms of the disease from different locations in Inner Mongolia, China. Nine fungal isolates recovered from these samples were identified through morphological traits and a maximum likelihood phylogeny based on concatenated partial sequences of ITS, 28S, and rpb2. A pathogenicity test on alfalfa confirmed the pathogenicity of the isolates on alfalfa. Analysis of physiological traits of L. trifolii revealed optimal mycelium growth at 20 °C and a pH range of 5 to 7, with soluble starch as the preferred carbon source and yeast extract as the optimal nitrogen source. The pathogen thrived in V8-juice agar and oat agar media. This study confirms L. trifolii as the causative agent of Leptosphaerulina leaf spot of alfalfa in Inner Mongolia and provides valuable insights into its optimal growth conditions. Sweet clover (Melilotus albus) is a high-quality leguminous forage grass with salinity tolerance, drought tolerance, and cold hardiness. We selected four varieties of sweet clover with different sensitivities (061898, 061930, No. 55 white flower, and Ningxia white flower) and analyzed the effects of different concentrations of three sodium salts (Na2CO3, NaHCO3, and NaCl) on their physiology and biochemistry responses. Growth and development indexes (such as germination rate, root length, shoot length), chlorophyll content, osmotic regulators (proline, soluble sugar), malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and catalase (CAT) were determined under saline–alkali stress. Seed germination and seedling growth of all four clover species were significantly inhibited under saline–alkali stress. During germination, seed germination rate, root length, and shoot length decreased with increasing saline and alkaline concentration. Under saline–alkali stress, chlorophyll content tended to increase and then decrease, cell damage and death increased, and malondialdehyde, soluble sugar, and proline content tended to increase and then decrease. Moreover, the activities of SOD, POD, and CAT all increased and then decreased. Under Na2CO3 stress, the decrease in chlorophyll content of the resistant variety 061898 was less than in the sensitive Ningxia white flower variety. As the concentrations of Na2CO3, NaHCO3, and NaCl increased, the maximum photochemical efficiency of PSII was significantly affected. The resistant 061898 is capable of maintaining higher photosynthetic efficiency. Furthermore, under treatments with the three kinds of saline–alkali solutions, cell damage and death for Ningxia white flower were greater than in 061898. For 061898, the increases in soluble sugar and proline content were greater and the increase in malondialdehyde content was less, while the antioxidant enzyme activities were higher than those in Ningxia white flower. All four sweet clover varieties had higher stress resistance with neutral than with alkaline salts. When stressed by medium to high saline–alkali concentrations, sweet clover seedlings had increased osmotic substance content, enhanced antioxidant enzyme activity, and regulated physiological metabolism. Additionally, sweet clovers regulated the expression of WRKY33, GH3, CYCD3, OXI1, MKK2, MYC2, JAZ, COI1, PYL, PP2C, TGA, and MPK3 to adapt to the saline–alkali environment and improve saline–alkali tolerance. Our analysis of the sweet clover salinity tolerance mechanism contributes to its further use and is of significant importance for addressing land salinization and promoting sustainable agricultural and pastoral practices in China. Objective: Hypertension refers to the persistent elevation of blood pressure above the established normal range, resulting in increased pressure exerted by blood on the walls of blood vessels during its circulation. Recent studies have identified significant associations between obesity and lipid-related indices, as well as hypertension. Nevertheless, these studies have yet to comprehensively examine the correlation between the two variables. Our objective is to identify the fat and lipid-related indices that have the strongest correlation with hypertension. Method: There was a total of 9488 elderly and middle-aged Chinese citizens who participated in this investigation. The participants in this research were separated into distinct gender cohorts. The participants were classified into normal and hypertensive categories according to their gender, with hypertension defined as a blood pressure level of 140/90 mmHg or higher, or a history of hypertension. Through the utilization of binary logistic regression analyses and the receiver operator curve (ROC), the optimal among fourteen indicators associated with obesity and lipids were identified. Results: After adjusting for variables, statistical analysis showed that all 14 measures of obesity and lipid were risk factors for hypertension. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis reveals that the Chinese visceral adiposity index (CVAI) has the highest degree of relationship to hypertension. Simultaneously, a statistically significant association between hypertension and these 14 variables was observed in both males and females. Conclusion: There was a significant independent association between various parameters related to obesity and lipid-related index and the presence of hypertension, indicating that these factors can be considered risk factors for hypertension. CVAI and WHtR (waist height ratio) can be used to screen the high-risk groups of hypertensions in middle-aged and elderly people in China, and then take individualized health care measures to reduce the harm of hypertension. Aims: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease with a high prevalence worldwide. This study aimed to examine the correlation between serum bilirubin levels and SLE. Methods: The Cochrane library, Embase, PubMed, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) databases were examined and assessed until March 2023. RevMan 5.3 software was utilized for the analysis of clinical trails. Results: Five case‐control studies were chosen and incorporated, examining the levels of serum bilirubin in patients with SLE compared to healthy individuals, as well as in active SLE patients versus inactive ones, in different sexes and in SLE patients with or without lupus nephritis (LN). The results of this meta‐analysis demonstrated that serum bilirubin in healthy individuals were obviously increased compared to SLE patients (MD = 4.76; 95% CI, 3.15–6.38, p <.00001). Additionally, inactive SLE patients had higher levels of bilirubin than active SLE patients (MD = 3.15; 95% CI, 0.46–5.84, p =.02), and SLE patients without lupus nephritis had higher levels of serum bilirubin than those with lupus nephritis (MD = 4.91;95% CI, 2.87–6.95, p <.00001). Nevertheless, there were no disparities observed among SLE patients of varying sexes (MD = 0.34; 95% CI, −0.01 to 0.69, p =.06). Conclusion: The concentration of serum bilirubin may potentially be used as an indicator for estimating the advancement of SLE and reflecting the presence of kidney complications in individuals with SLE. Objective: To improve the quality of community nursing teaching practice and cultivate undergraduate nursing students who meet the quality accreditation standards of our nursing profession, and to explore the establishment of an undergraduate nurse practice model. Methods : Using the methods of literature review, survey, expert consultation, and discussion, we established the steps and contents of community practice teaching for undergraduate nursing students, and implemented them for the students of Grades 2014, 2015, and 2016, and evaluated the "community-hospital-community" practice model through various forms, such as student self-evaluation, faculty evaluation, exit examination, and evaluation by certified experts. Result : A three-stage community nursing practice model of "community-hospital-community" was established for undergraduate nursing students. After three stages of practice, nursing undergraduates successfully passed the practical assessments and achieved excellent grades in each stage that met the requirements of the training program. In the first stage (community probation), community probation emphasizes a fundamental understanding of the community, using free clinics, health education, and home visits as entry points to effectively cultivate students' job competence and proficiency in nursing operations and nurse-patient communication skills. In the second stage (internship in the hospital), through nursing internships in various systems, students are trained to integrate theoretical knowledge with practical skills and consolidate their understanding of fundamental knowledge, theory, and techniques. They are capable of preventing, diagnosing, intervening, and providing health education for common, frequent, urgent and critical complications in various clinical systems. They can formulate nursing plans and implement whole-person care. In the third stage (returning to the community for internship), students can master basic skills such as nursing operations and patient communication skills, and then they can enter the community internship. Conclusion: The community nursing practice model of "community- hospital- community" for undergraduate nursing students can systematically train undergraduate nursing students' ability to work in the community. Weeds seriously affect the yield and quality of crops. Because manual weeding is time-consuming and laborious, the use of herbicides becomes an effective way to solve the harm caused by weeds in fields. Both 5-enolpyruvyl shikimate-3-phosphate synthetase (EPSPS) and acetyltransferase genes (bialaphos resistance, BAR) are widely used to improve crop resistance to herbicides. However, cotton, as the most important natural fiber crop, is not tolerant to herbicides in China, and the EPSPS and BAR family genes have not yet been characterized in cotton. Therefore, we explore the genes of these two families to provide candidate genes for the study of herbicide resistance mechanisms. In this study, 8, 8, 4, and 5 EPSPS genes and 6, 6, 5, and 5 BAR genes were identified in allotetraploid Gossypium hirsutum and Gossypium barbadense, diploid Gossypium arboreum and Gossypium raimondii, respectively. Members of the EPSPS and BAR families were classified into three subgroups based on the distribution of phylogenetic trees, conserved motifs, and gene structures. In addition, the promoter sequences of EPSPS and BAR family members included growth and development, stress, and hormone-related cis-elements. Based on the expression analysis, the family members showed tissue-specific expression and differed significantly in response to abiotic stresses. Finally, qRT-PCR analysis revealed that the expression levels of GhEPSPS3, GhEPSPS4, and GhBAR1 were significantly upregulated after exogenous spraying of herbicides. Overall, we characterized the EPSPS and BAR gene families of cotton at the genome-wide level, which will provide a basis for further studying the functions of EPSPS and BAR genes during growth and development and herbicide stress. Background: Since March 2022, the COVID-19 epidemic has rebounded widely and frequently in China. Healthcare workers have faced grand challenges such as soaring COVID-19 patients, being busy with the nucleic acid screening of all the populations in the epidemic areas every day, and testing positive for COVID-19, all of which contributed to anxiety easily according to the Conservation of Resources theory. However, anxiety among healthcare workers is not only associated with personal health but also adversely affects the quality of health services. Therefore, it is crucial to search for suitable tools to monitor the anxiety related to COVID-19 among healthcare workers. The current study aimed to test the Coronavirus Anxiety Scale (CAS) in Chinese healthcare workers. Methods: The current study employed a cross-sectional design. The CAS was translated into Chinese. Then, according to Classical Test Theory (CTT) and Item Response Theory (IRT) models, the psychometric properties of the Chinese version were measured among 811 healthcare workers. Results: The split‐half reliability was 0.855. The Cronbach's α coefficient was 0.895. The retest coefficient was 0.901 with 10 days as the retest interval. The content validity index was 0.920. In exploratory factor analysis, one common factor was extracted and explained 72.559% of the total variance. All item load values on the common factor ranged from 0.790 to 0.885, and the communality of each item ranged from 0.625 to 0.784. With confirmatory factor analysis, the single factor model showed an excellent goodness-of-fit, chi-square/degree of freedom (χ2/df) = 3.339, goodness of fit index (GFI) = 0.992, adjusted goodness of fit index (AGFI) = 0.975, root-mean-square error of approximation (RMSEA) = 0.054, root mean square residual (RMR) = 0.005, incremental fit index (IFI) = 0.967, Tucker-Lewis index (TLI) = 0.932, and comparative fit index (CFI) = 0.966. The multiple-group confirmatory factor analysis revealed the invariance measuring anxiety of COVID-19 was in similar ways across ages, hospital degrees, and professional titles. With convergent validity, the CAS was positively correlated with post-traumatic stress disorder (r = 0.619, P < 0.001), fear of COVID (r = 0.550, P < 0.001), and depression (r = 0.367, P < 0.001). According to IRT models, the results showed that all item discrimination parameters were higher than 1.70 and difficulty parameters ranged from 1.13 to 2.83. Conclusion: The Chinese version of CAS has good psychometric properties in healthcare workers after China adjusted the COVID-19 management measures during the COVID-19 Omicron epidemic, and can be used for assessing the anxiety associated with COVID-19 in Chinese healthcare workers. Emerging studies have shown that environmental contaminants were related to decreased handgrip strength. Nevertheless, no prior research has investigated the relationship of exposure to environmental antibiotics with grip strength. Thus, we explored the relationship between urinary antibiotic burden and grip strength among the elderly in China. This study consisted of 451 men and 539 women from the baseline survey of a cohort study. Commonly used antibiotics for humans and animals were detected in 990 urine samples through a biomonitoring method. Grip strength was measured by an electronic dynamometer. We examined the associations of antibiotic exposure with low grip strength (LGS), grip strength, and grip strength index, respectively. Results suggested that 34.9% of participants developed LGS, and 93.0% of individuals were exposed to 1–10 antibiotics. Among women, oxytetracycline (Quartile 2: odds ratio: 2.97, 95% confidence interval: 1.36–6.50), florfenicol (Quartile 3: 2.60 [1.28–5.27]), fluoroquinolones (Quartile 4: 1.88 [1.07–3.30]), and chloramphenicols (Quartile 3: 2.73 [1.35–5.51]) could enhance LGS risk. Among men, ofloxacin (Quartile 2: 3.32 [1.45–7.59]) increased LGS risk, whereas tetracycline (Quartile 2: 0.31 [0.11–0.88]) was implicated in reduced LGS risk. In participants < 70 years, ofloxacin (Quartile 2: 3.00 [1.40–6.42]) could increase LGS risk. For participants who were 70 years of age or older, veterinary antibiotics (Quartile 3: 1.73 [1.02–2.94]) were linked to a 73% increased risk of LGS. Our findings suggested that antibiotics mainly pertained to LGS, and there were gender and age disparities in associations between antibiotic exposure and muscle strength indicators in the elderly Chinese population. Background: Currently, the study outcomes of anthropometric markers to predict the risk of hypertension are still inconsistent due to the effect of racial disparities. This study aims to investigate the most effective predictors for screening and prediction of hypertension (HTN) in the Chinese middle-aged and more elderly adult population and to predict hypertension using obesity and lipid-related markers in Chinese middle-aged and older people. Methods: The data for the cohort study came from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), including 4423 middle-aged and elderly people aged 45 years or above. We examined 13 obesity- and lipid-related indices, including waist circumference (WC), body mass index (BMI), waist-height ratio (WHtR), visceral adiposity index (VAI), a body shape index (ABSI), body roundness index (BRI), lipid accumulation product index (LAP), conicity index (CI), Chinese visceral adiposity index (CVAI), triglyceride-glucose index (TyG-index) and their combined indices (TyG-BMI, TyG-WC, TyG-WHtR). To compare the capacity of each measure to forecast the probability of developing HTN, the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) was used to determine the usefulness of anthropometric indices for screening for HTN in the elderly and determining their cut-off value, sensitivity, specificity, and area under the curve (AUC). Association analysis of 13 obesity-related anthropometric indicators with HTN was performed using binary logistic regression analysis. Results: During the four years, the incident rates of HTN in middle-aged and elderly men and women in China were 22.08% and 17.82%, respectively. All the above 13 indicators show a modest predictive power (AUC > 0.5), which is significant for predicting HTN in adults (middle-aged and elderly people) in China (P < 0.05). In addition, when WHtR = 0.501 (with an AUC of 0.593, and sensitivity and specificity of 63.60% and 52.60% respectively) or TYg-WHtR = 4.335 (with an AUC of 0.601, and sensitivity and specificity of 58.20% and 59.30% respectively), the effect of predicting the incidence risk of men is the best. And when WHtR = 0.548 (with an AUC of 0.609, and sensitivity and specificity of 59.50% and 56.50% respectively) or TYg-WHtR = 4.781(with an AUC of 0.617, and sensitivity and specificity of 58.10% and 60.80% respectively), the effect of predicting the incidence risk of women is the best. Conclusions: The 13 obesity- and lipid-related indices in this study have modest significance for predicting HTN in Chinese middle-aged and elderly patients. Background: Insomnia has become an important issue in recent years. Insomnia is affected by many factors. Previous research has shown that during the COVID-19 pandemic, there would be a long-term negative effect on the mental health of medical college students. The state of medical college students' insomnia directly determines the results of medical education and the career development prospects of the medical students themselves. Therefore, it is very important to understand the insomnia situation of medical students in the post-epidemic era. Methods: This study was conducted 2 years after the global COVID-19 pandemic (April 1-April 23, 2022). The study used an online questionnaire, administered through a web-based survey platform. The Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS), Fear of COVID‐19 Scale (FCV-19S), GAD-2, PHQ-2, and socio-demographic information were surveyed by the Questionnaire Star platform. Results: The prevalence of insomnia was 27.80% (636/2289). Grade(P < 0.05), age(P < 0.001), loneliness(P < 0.001), depression(P < 0.001), anxiety(P < 0.001), fear of COVID-19 was highly correlated with insomnia (P < 0.001). Adapting to online class(P < 0.001) was a protective factor of smartphone addiction. Conclusions: This survey shows that Insomnia was highly prevalent among the Chinese medical college students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Governments and schools should through psychological interventions to address the current situation of insomnia among medical students, and formulate targeted programs and strategies to reduce their psychological problems. To achieve near-continuous vertical observations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the planetary boundary layer (PBL), multi-channel whole-air sampling equipment onboard an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platform was developed in this study. The equipment consists of a multi-position solenoid valve and specially designed lightweight quartz sampling canisters. The canisters have little adsorption loss of VOCs and good inter-canister reproducibility. The 7 d recovery test shows that most VOC species (97 %) had a 1-week decay within 20 %. Online instruments for measuring O 3 , NO 2 , CO, SO 2 , and meteorological parameters are also integrated into the UAV platform. During one take-off and landing, the UAV platform can reach 800 m above the ground within 40 min and take whole-air samples at six heights. Vertical profiles of VOCs and trace gases during the evolution of the PBL in south-western China are successfully obtained by deploying the newly developed UAV system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Magnolia, a traditional and important ornamental plant in urban greening, has been cultivated for about 2000 years in China for its elegant flower shape and gorgeous flower color. Most varieties of Magnolia bloom once a year in spring, whereas a few others, such as Magnolia liliiflora Desr. 'Hongyuanbao', also bloom for the second time in summer or early autumn. Such a twice flowering trait is desirable for its high ornamental value, while its underlying mechanism remains unclear. Methods: Paraffin section was used to show the flowering time and phenotypic changes of M. liliiflora 'Hongyuanbao' during the twice flowering periods from March 28 to August 25, 2018. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was then performed to explore the chemical metabolites through the twice flower bud differentiation process in 'Hongyuanbao', and the metabolites were screened and identified by orthogonal projection to latent structures discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA). Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway enrichment analysis (KEGG) was used to reveal the relationship between the sugar metabolites and twice-flowering characteristic. To further investigate the potential role of sucrose and trehalose on flowering regulation of 'Hongyuanbao', the plants once finished the spring flowering were regularly sprayed with sucrose and trehalose solutions at 30 mM, 60 mM, and 90 mM concentrations from April 22, 2019. The flower bud differentiation processes of sprayed plants were observed and the expression patterns of the genes involved in sucrose and trehalose metabolic pathways were studied by quantitative reverse transcription PCR (qRT-PCR). Results: It showed that 'Hongyuanbao' could complete flower bud differentiation twice in a year and flowered in both spring and summer. The metabolites of flower bud differentiation had a significant variation between the first and second flower buds. Compared to the first flower bud differentiation process, the metabolites in the sucrose and trehalose metabolic pathways were significantly up-regulated during the second flower bud differentiation process. Besides that, the expression levels of a number of trehalose-6-phosphate synthase (TPS) genes including MlTPS1, MlTPS5, MlTPS6, MlTPS7 and MlTPS9 were substantially increased in the second flower differentiation process compared with the first process. Exogenous treatments indicated that compared to the control plants (sprayed with water, CK), all three concentrations of trehalose could accelerate flowering and the effect of 60 mM concentration was the most significant. For the sucrose foliar spray, only the 60 mM concentration accelerated flowering compared with CK. It suggested that different concentration of trehalose and sucrose might have different effects. Expression analysis showed that sucrose treatment increased the transcription levels of MlTPS5 and MlTPS6, whereas trehalose treatment increased MlTPS1, showing that different MlTPS genes took part in sucrose and trehalose metabolic pathways respectively. The expression levels of a number of flowering-related genes, such as MlFT, MlLFY, and MlSPL were also increased in response to the sprays of sucrose and trehalose. Conclusions: We provide a novel insight into the effect of sucrose and trehalose on the flowering process in Magnolia. Under the different sugar contents treatments, the time of flower bud differentiation of Magnolia was advanced. Induced and accelerated flowering in response to sucrose and trehalose foliar spray, coupled with elevated expression of trehalose regulatory and response genes, suggests that secondary flower bud formation is a promoted by altered endogenous sucrose and trehalose levels. Those results give a new understanding of sucrose and trehalose on twice-flowering in Magnolia and provide a preliminary speculation for inducing and accelerating the flowering process in Magnolia. Although antibiotic exposure in the general population has been well documented by a biomonitoring approach, epidemiologic data on the relationships between urinary antibiotic burden in the elderly with blood pressure (BP) are still lacking. The current study revealed thirty-four antibiotics in urine specimens from 990 elderly patients in Lu'an City, China, with detection frequencies ranging from 0.2 to 35.5%. Among the elderly, the prevalence of hypertension was 72.0%, and 12 antibiotics were detected in more than 10% of individuals with hypertension. The elderly with hypertension had the maximum daily exposure (5450.45 μg/kg/day) to fluoroquinolones (FQs). Multiple linear regression analyses revealed significant associations of BP and pulse pressure (PP) with exposure to specific antibiotics. The estimated β values (95% confidence interval) of associations with systolic blood pressure (SBP) in the right arm were 4.42 (1.15, 7.69) for FQs, 4.26 (0.52, 8.01) for the preferred as human antibiotics (PHAs), and 3.48 (0.20, 6.77) for the mixtures (FQs + tetracyclines [TCs] (tertile 3 vs. tertile 1)), respectively. Increased concentrations of TCs were associated with decreased diastolic BP (DBP; tertile 3: −1.75 [−3.39, −0.12]) for the right arm. Higher levels of FQs (tertile 3: 4.28 [1.02, 7.54]), PHAs (tertile 3: 4.25 [0.49, 8.01]), and FQs + TCs (tertile 3: 3.99 [0.71, 7.26]) were associated with increased SBP, and an increase in DBP for FQs (tertile 3: 1.82 [0.22, 3.42]) was shown in the left arm. Also, higher urinary concentrations of FQs (tertile 3: 3.18 [0.53, 5.82]), PHAs (tertile 3: 3.42 [0.40, 6.45]), and FQs + TCs (tertile 3: 3.06 [0.40, 5.72]) were related to increased PP, whereas a decline in PP for TCs (tertile 2: −2.93 [−5.60, −0.25]) in the right arm. And increased concentrations of penicillin V (tertile 3: 5.31 [1.53, 9.10]) and FQs + TCs (tertile 3: 2.84 [0.19, 5.49]) were related to higher PP in the left arm. By utilizing restricted cubic splines, our current study revealed a potential nonlinear dose-response association between FQ exposure and hypertension risk. Background: This study investigated different patterns of emotional labor among community nurses in China and analyzed the relationships between the sense of career success and emotional labor. Methods: A total of 385 community nurses from Beijing participated in this investigation. Latent class analysis was used to identify meaningful subgroups of participants, and analysis of variance was used to analyze relationships between emotional labor classes and the sense of career success. Results: Emotional labor among community nursing staff in China was divided into three latent classes: active (n = 90, 25.6%), apathetic (n = 65, 18.5%), and moderate (n = 197, 55.9%). The active emotional labor classes had significantly higher career success (p<0.05). The "gaining recognition" dimension showed significant differences across the three classes. Conclusion: Our findings suggested managers to implement a variety of measures to strengthen interventions for employees' emotional labor that are targeted to incentive mechanisms, which will improve nurses' sense of career success. Gualou Xiebai Decoction (GXD), a classic prescription, is widely used to dealing with inflammatory diseases in China for thousands of years. Abnormal metabolic state of bile acids (BAs) is confirmed to cause intestinal epithelial barrier dysfunction. In preliminary work, we observed that GXD could decrease intestinal permeability in hyperlipidemia mice. The present study aimed to explore the protective effect of GXD on intestinal mucosa in vitro. Caco-2 cell monolayer permeability among different groups was determined by measuring the concentrations of FITC-dextran in the lower compartments and transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER). Meanwhile, mRNA and protein expressions of tight junctions (TJs) were investigated. Generation of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the ratio of cell apoptosis induced by BAs were assessed by fluorescence probe and flow cytometry. GXD was shown to keep the cell monolayer in low permeable status, increase TEER and mRNA and protein expressions of occludin (Ocln) and zonula occluden 2 (ZO2) remarkably in cells challenged with cholic acid (CA), deoxycholic acid (DCA) and glycocholic acid (GCA). However, no significant effects were uncovered against the pathological effects of taurocholic acid (TCA). Meanwhile, generation of ROS and increased levels of apoptotic cells caused by CA, DCA and GCA were dramatically decreased by GXD, which were not observed on TCA. GXD could significantly attenuate intestinal barrier dysfunction induced by BAs via TJs regulation, oxidative stress suppression and cell apoptosis decrease, but such effects and behind mechanisms differed among different kinds of BAs. The objective of this work was to study the impact of large petrochemical plants and mining operations on the accumulation of heavy metals in farmland and rice, as well as assess their potential risks on human health. The contents of seven heavy metals, Cd, Pb, Cr, Ni, Co, Cu, and Mn, were monitored in a typical polluted paddy soil-rice system near a petrochemical plant and mining area in Maoming, China. The results showed that the content of Cd in the soil exceeds the standard rate by 100%, and the single factor pollution index of Cd was 5.12, which is considered heavy pollution. Excessive heavy metals can inhibit and poison the growth of rice plants. Rice plants can maintain a certain level of heavy metal content by reducing the absorption or interception in the root cells, leading to great differences in the distribution of different heavy metals in plant tissues. Cadmium, Cu, Co, and Mn are easily absorbed from the soil by rice roots, while other heavy metals are relatively difficult to absorb by rice roots. Cuprum, Cd, Co, Pb, and Cr were mainly accumulated in the root of rice, but Mn and Ni migrate to the above ground plant tissues quickly. The brown rice produced in the paddy fields in the study area was seriously polluted. The concentration of Cd, Pb, and Ni in brown rice exceeded the standard by 100%, and Cr in brown rice also exceeded the standard by 80%. If residents consume rice from the study area, their daily intake of Cr and Cd will be 1.02 and 3.24 times higher, respectively, than the standard limit recommended by the FAO/WHO. The irrigation streams were polluted due to the discharge of petrochemical plants and mining wastewater, causing the serious pollution of heavy metals in the surrounding paddy fields. Objectives. Undernutrition early in life may increase the incidence of adverse effects on adult health. The relations between undernutrition and obesity parameters (body mass index (BMI) and WC (waist circle)) and hypertension were often contradictory. Our study is aimed at identifying the combined effects of famine exposure and obesity parameters on hypertension in middle-aged and older Chinese. Design. A population-based cross-sectional study. Setting. Data were selected from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study Wave2011 (CHARLS Wave2011). Participants. The sample included 12945 individuals aged 45 to 96. Main Outcome Measurements. The study analyzed data from 12945 middle-aged and older Chinese selected from CHARLS Wave2011. Differences between baseline characteristics and famine exposure/BMI levels/WC levels were evaluated using the t -, Chi-square- ( χ 2 -), and F -test. Then, the difference in the prevalence of hypertension between baseline characteristics was estimated by the t - and χ 2 -test. Finally, multivariable-adjusted logistic regression models were used to explore the associations of famine exposure and obesity parameters with odds of prevalence of hypertension. Results. Among the 12945 participants, 1548 (11.96%) participants had been exposed to the Chinese famine during the fetal group, whereas 5101 (39.41%) participants and 4362 (33.70%) participants had been exposed to the famine during childhood and adolescence/adult group, respectively. Regarding the participants with BMI levels, 3746 (28.94%) were overweight, and 1465 (11.32%) were obese, whereas 5345 (41.29%) of the participants with WC levels were obese, respectively. Furthermore, 1920 (31.17%) had hypertension in males and 2233 (32.91%) in females. Objective: To examine the associations between urinary antibiotics from various sources and depression in the elderly using the biomonitoring method. Methods: In the current study, we investigated 990 elderly individuals (≥ 60 years old) from a community-based elderly cohort in West Anhui, China. The participants were interviewed by the Geriatric Depression Scale and self-developed questionnaires. A total of 45 antibiotics belonging to nine categories were screened in urine samples by the developed liquid chromatography electrospray tandem mass spectrometry method. Creatinine-corrected concentrations of antibiotics in urines were used to assess their exposure. Logistic regression analysis was employed to test the relationships between exposure to antibiotics and depression. Results: Compared to the control group, the multinomial logistic regression analyses showed the elderly exposed to higher concentrations of azithromycin (OR = 1.81, 95% CI: 1.09–3.00) and sulfaclozine (OR = 1.54, 95% CI: 1.05–2.28) had increased risks of depression, respectively. After categorizing the detected antibiotics, tetracyclines (OR = 1.48, 95% CI: 1.02–2.16) and veterinary antibiotics (VAs) (OR = 1.53, 95% CI: 1.06–2.20) were positively correlated with increased risks of depression. After stratified by sex, the VAs (OR = 2.04, 95% CI: 1.13–3.71) at higher concentrations were associated with elevated risks of depression in males, while the associations between depression and antibiotic exposures were observed in tetracyclines (OR = 1.74, 95% CI: 1.04–2.85) and all antibiotics (OR = 2.24, 95% CI: 1.01–2.94) at higher levels in females, respectively. Notably, after the stratification by age, the significant associations were mainly present in the subjects under the age of 70. Conclusions: Our findings reveal that azithromycin, sulfaclozine, tetracyclines, and the VAs were significantly associated with elevated risks of depression in the elderly. Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a movement disorder lacking of validated biomarkers. Experimental studies support the potential value of silent information regulator 1 (SIRT1) in neurodegeneration including PD. We aim to detect the serum levels of SIRT1 in PD patients in order to assess its value as a potential biomarker of PD. Methods: Fifty-eight PD patients and 91 healthy controls were included. Serum SIRT1 was determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and compared between controls and PD patients. Spearman correlation coefficient was analyzed to study the relationship between serum SIRT1 and clinical parameters in PD patients. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was conducted to assess the diagnostic value of serum SIRT1 in PD identification. Results: Serum SIRT1 was significantly reduced in PD patients compared with controls. According to the ROC curve, the optimal cut-off point was 0.47 ng/ml with the sensitivity of 71% and specificity of 71%. Serum SIRT1 level was related to age of onset, disease duration, Hoehn-Yahr staging scale (H-Y stage), Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale III (UPDRS III), and Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). PD patients with cognitive impairment had lower serum SIRT1 than those with normal cognitive ability. Conclusions: Serum SIRT1 was reduced in PD patients and associated with disease severity and cognitive function. Our results indicate that SIRT1 may be a potential biomarker for PD. Purpose: Previous studies have shown that insulin resistance and inflammation may be associated with the pathophysiological mechanisms of mood disorders. Here, we investigated whether homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and serum interleukin-1β (IL-1β) in acute ischemic stroke patients might be associated with post-stroke depression (PSD). Materials and Methods: The prospective study was conducted in China from February 2019 to September 2020. HOMA-IR and clinical data were collected at the time of admission. Serum levels of IL-1β were determined with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. Symptoms of depression and anxiety were screened by using the Hamilton Depression and Anxiety Scale at 6 months after stroke, and PSD was diagnosed on the basis of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V) criteria. The association of potential risk factors with PSD was analyzed with multivariate logistic regression analysis. Finally, the ability of HOMA-IR and IL-1β to predict PSD was assessed with receiver operating characteristic curve. Results: A total of 305 people was included in the study; 65% were male, and the median age was 69.5± 11.8 years. At the 6-month follow-up, 113 patients (37.5%) showed depressive symptoms. In multivariate logistic regression analysis, HOMA-IR and IL-1β as graded variables were associated with an increased risk of PSD (P < 0.05). Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis indicated the highest sensitivity and specificity when the HOMA-IR and IL-1β were 1.96 and 38.71 pg/mL, respectively (P < 0.001). IL-1β improved the ability of HOMA-IR to diagnose PSD combined model area under the curve (AUC): 0.78; 95% CI: 0.72– 0.83; P < 0.001). Conclusion: This study suggests that HOMA-IR and IL-1β are strongly associated with PSD at 6 months after stroke in patients with acute ischemic stroke. Objectives: During the 2019 Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak, malnutrition may contribute to COVID-19 adverse outcomes. We conducted a clinical epidemiological analysis to investigate the association of malnutrition with hospitalized duration in patients with COVID-19. Design: Retrospective survey study. Setting: Taikang Tongji (Wuhan) hospital in Wuhan, China. Participants: 139 patients with COVID-19. Methods: In total, 139 patients with COVID-19 from patients in the Infection Department of Taikang Tongji (Wuhan) hospital from February 2020 to April 2020 were analyzed retrospectively. We used the "Global leadership Initiative on Malnutrition(GLIM)" assessment standard published in 2019 to assess nutritional status. Prolonged hospitalization was lasting more than the median value of the hospitalized days (17 days) in this population. Results: According to the assessment results of GLIM nutrition assessment, the patients were divided into malnutrition group and normal nutrition group. Compared with the patients in the normal nutrition group, the hospitalization time was longer(15.67±6.26 days versus 27.48±5.04 days, P = 0.001). Kaplan-Meier analysis showed patients with malnutrition were more likely to be hospitalized longer compared with those normal nutrition (mean with 95% confidence interval [CI]: 28.91[27.52–30.30] versus 22.78[21.76–23.79], P = 0.001). COX regression analysis showed that malnutrition (hazard ratio [HR] = 3.773, P for trend = 0.001) was proportional associated with being discharged from hospital delayed. Conclusion and implications: Present findings suggested that malnutrition contributed to predicting a probability of prolonged hospitalization in patients with COVID-19 infection, to whom extra attentions and precautions should be paid during clinical treatments. Peach gummosis caused by Lasiodiplodia theobromae is one of the most detrimental diseases to peaches in southern China. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) play major roles in plant-pathogen interactions, however, their roles in the pathogenesis of peach gummosis, especially shoot disease in perennials, are largely unknown. In this study, the effects of L. theobromae on ROS production-scavenging systems and on signalling transduction during L. theobromae -induced gummosis in current-year peach shoots were investigated. The infection by L. theobromae led to a ROS burst and activated the plant antioxidant enzyme-dependent scavenging system. With disease progression, the capacity of the plant antioxidant machinery declined, and allowed for ROS accumulation and eventual malondialdehyde production. As for the fungus L. theobromae , the transcripts of genes related to ROS production were significantly repressed, and concomitantly the expression of genes related to antioxidant systems and oxidative stress resistance was markedly upregulated, perhaps to alleviate oxidative stress for successful colonisation. Moreover, genes involved in phytohormones biosynthesis and pathogenesis-related proteins were all markedly promoted, which could contribute to the restriction of disease development in peach shoots. Overall, the results showed that the ROS production-scavenging system in P. persica might affect disease development during peach- L. theobromae interaction. The development of wind power in China shows a dramatic growth in the past decade in terms of installed capacity. However, wind power companies mainly focus on the construction of new wind farms continuously, while operations management once wind farms are built is seldom paid attention to. The problem is crucial for ensuring efficient power generation, especially when wind turbines' performance declines over time and disruption/failure often occurs. Efficient disruption recovery operations are critical for restoring the failures of wind turbine generators as fast as possible. This paper aims to optimize the disruption recovery operations for wind farms by determining the maintenance schedule and route for multiple maintenance teams. This optimization problem is formulated as a deterministic mixed integer linear programming model with the objective of minimizing the loss of power generation due to failure. In view of the high uncertainty of repair time, a chance-constrained programming model and a cutting-plane solution algorithm are further proposed. A case study based on a real wind farm demonstrates (1) the proposed model is applicable for solving real-world-sized problems; (2) the optimal maintenance route often shows a crossing pattern, which is quite different from that of traditional vehicle routing problems; and (3) the working time limit violation for maintenance teams due to uncertain repair time can be effectively avoided. To facilitate continuous development of the wind power industry, maintaining technological innovation and reducing cost per kilowatt hour of the electricity generated by the wind turbine generator system (WTGS) are effective measures to facilitate the industrial development. Therefore, the improvement of the system availability for wind farms becomes an important issue which can significantly reduce the operational cost. To improve the system availability, it is necessary to diagnose the system fault for the wind turbine generator so as to find the key factors that influence the system performance and further reduce the maintenance cost. In this paper, a wind farm with 200 MW installed capacity in eastern coastal plain in China is chosen as the research object. A prediction model of wind farm's faults is constructed based on the Gaussian process metamodel. By comparing with actual observation results, the constructed model is proved able to predict failure events of the wind turbine generator accurately. The developed model is further used to analyze the key factors that influence the system failure. Plasmodium falciparum isolates from China–Myanmar border (CMB) have experienced regional special selective pressures and adaptive evolution. However, the genomes of P. falciparum isolates from this region to date are poorly characterized. Herein, we performed whole-genome sequencing of 34 P. falciparum isolates from CMB and a series of genome-wide sequence analyses to reveal their genetic diversity, population structures, and comparisons with the isolates from other epidemic regions (Thai–Cambodia border, Thai–Myanmar border, and West Africa). Totally 59,720 high-quality single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were identified in the P. falciparum isolates from CMB, with average nucleotide diversity (π = 4.59 × 10−4) and LD decay (132 bp). The Tajima's D and Fu and Li's D values of the CMB isolates were −0.8 (p < 0.05) and −0.84 (p < 0.05), respectively, suggesting a demographic history of recent population expansion or purifying selection. Moreover, 78 genes of the parasite were identified that could be under positive selection, including those genes conferring drug resistance such as pfubp1. In addition, 33 SNPs were identified for tracing the source of the parasites with a high accuracy by analysis of the most differential SNPs among the four epidemic regions. Collectively, our data demonstrated high diversity of the CMB isolates' genomes forming a distinct population, and the identification of 33-SNP barcode provides a valuable surveillance of parasite migration among the regions. Aberrant glycosylation is strongly correlated with the development of various cancers. Tumor-associated carbohydrate antigens, including N -glycans, are predominantly expressed on the tumor cell surface. Because the incidence of colorectal cancer is high in China, we investigated aberrant N -glycans from colorectal cancer tissues (CRC) in Chinese patients. By Linear ion trap quadrupole-electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, we performed glycomic assays on N -glycans obtained from solid CRC tissues and paired peritumoral tissues. In total, aberrant N -glycans were expressed in the colorectal tumor tissues. Specifically, seven bisecting structures (M/Z 9732+, 10602+, 10752+, 11622+, 11772+, 12642+, 13522+) decreased, M/Z 10552+ (two-antennae complex N -glycan) and M/Z 12792+ (three-antennae complex N -glycan) decreased, M/Z 10132+ and M/Z 11162+ (high-mannose N -glycan) increased, and M/Z 12282+ (bifucosylated N -glycan) increased. To evaluate the MS profile data, several statistical tools were applied, including student's t test, orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis and receiver operating characteristic curve. The measurement of the degree of bisecting N -glycans had an area under the curve value of 0.823. Interestingly, we observed that the bisecting N -glycans decreased with the tumor stages. This phenomenon was not found in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, in which the bisecting N -glycans had no change. Abstract: Understanding salinity and fertilizer interaction is of great economic importance to improving crop yield and fertilizer use efficiency. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of nitrogen (N) rate on cotton yield and N use efficiency (NUE), and relate this to the optimum N fertilizer rate under saline field conditions. To achieve this goal, we conducted a two-year experiment in two nearby fields with similar fertility but varying salinity, using a split-plot design in the Yellow River Delta of China. The main plots were assigned to moderate (electrical conductivity of soil saturated paste extract, ECe=6.3dS/m) and high (ECe=12.5dS/m) salinity levels, while N-free (0kg/ha), low (120kg/ha), moderate (210kg/ha) and high (300kgN/ha) nitrogen rates were assigned to the subplots. The high-salinity soil produced 35% lower biological yield but 8.9% higher harvest index than the moderate-salinity soil. Biological yields were increased by 30% at low N rate, 35% at moderate N rate and 37% at high N rate. Under moderate salinity, moderate N rate produced more lint than other N rates; under the high salinity field, the low N rate produced lint yield comparable to the high- and moderate-N rates, being about 33% greater than that from 0-N rate. Moderate N rate was superior to high N rate but comparable to low rate based on agronomic NUE (aNUE), physiological NUE (pNUE), internal NUE (iNUE) and N recovery efficiency (NRE) under moderate salinity; under high salinity, the low N rate produced the greatest aNUE and NRE, and higher pNUE and iNUE than high N rate. Our overall results supported the use of moderate N rate for moderate salinity cotton fields and low N rate for high salinity fields in the saline Yellow River Delta and other cotton-growing areas with similar ecologies. Purpose -- There is intense competition and increasing globalisation in financial markets. Bank management must develop customer-oriented strategies in order to compete successfully in the competitive retail banking environment. The longer a bank can retain a customer, the greater revenue and cost savings from that customer. China's accession to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) has resulted in the liberalisation and deregulation of China's financial services market. Chinese customers now have greater choices between domestic and foreign banks. This study aims to identify and analyse the factors that influence bank customers' switching behaviour in the Chinese retail banking industry. Design/methodology/approach -- The data for this analysis was obtained using a convenience sample of 421 bank customers in Jiaozuo City, Henan Province, China. The decision to switch banks is hypothesised to be a function of price, reputation, service quality, effective advertising competition, involuntary switching, distance, switching costs, distance, and demographic characteristics. Factor analysis and logistic regression are used to analyse the data and identify and rank the factors that impact on the bank switching behaviour of customers. Findings -- The research findings reveal that price, reputation, service quality, effective advertising, involuntary switching, distance, and switching costs impact on customers' bank switching behaviour. The findings also reveal that the young and high-income groups are more likely to switch banks. Practical implications -- The results of this research allow service marketers and practitioners to develop and implement service marketing strategies to decrease customer defection rates, and in turn, increase bank profits. Furthermore, this research provides useful information for future researchers investigating customer switching behaviour in the retail banking industry. Experimental and epidemiological studies have linked antibiotics use to gut dysbiosis-mediated risk of chronic metabolic diseases. However, whether adiposity is linked to antibiotic exposure in elderly remains inadequately understood. To investigate the association between internal exposure of antibiotics and adiposity in elderly by using a biomonitoring method. We included 990 participants (≥ 60 years) from the baseline survey of the Cohort of Elderly Health and Environment Controllable Factors in Lu'an city, China, from June to September 2016. Forty-five antibiotics and two metabolites in urine were monitored through liquid chromatography-electrospray tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS). Creatinine-corrected urinary concentrations were used to assess antibiotic exposure levels. Body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC) and body fat percentage (BFP) were used as indicators of adiposity. Multiple linear regression and binary logistic regression analyses were used to analyze the association of antibiotic concentrations with obesity-related indices. Subsequently, a gender-stratified analysis was performed. Of the included elderly, 50.7% were defined as having overweight/ obesity, 59.8% as having central preobesity/obesity, and 37.5% as having slightly high/high BFP. Linear regression analysis revealed that a 1-unit increase in the logarithmic transformation of norfloxacin concentrations was related with an increase of 0.29 kg/m2 (95% CI: 0.02–0.04), 0.99 cm (95% CI：0.24–1.75), and 0.69% (95% CI：0.21–1.17) in BMI, WC, and BFP, respectively. Compared with the control group, exposure to doxycycline (tertile 2: odds ratio, 2.06 [95% CI: 1.12–3.76]) and norfloxacin (tertile 2: 2.13 [1.05–4.29]; tertile 3: 2.07 [1.03–4.17]) had BMI-based overweight/obesity risk. Additionally, ciprofloxacin (tertile 2: 2.06 [1.12–3.76]), norfloxacin (tertile 3: 2.95 [1.34–6.49]), and florfenicol (tertile 3: 1.84 [1.07–3.14]) were related to WC-based central preobesity/obesity risk. Norfloxacin (tertile 3: 2.54 [1.23–5.24]) was positively associated with a slightly high/high BFP risk. Gender-stratified analysis demonstrated an increased adiposity risk in women compared with men. Our research provided an evidence that exposure to specific types of antibiotics (tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones) probably from the food chain contributed to obesity in elderly. Basal and topdressing split application of nitrogen (N) fertilizer is widely used in cotton in many cotton-growing countries, including China. Recently, in the Yellow River valley of China, one-off basal application of N fertilizer has been applied to meet the challenge of increasing labor costs. However, how one-off basal application of N fertilizer affects cotton yields and N use efficiency and by what mechanisms are not clear. Therefore, an experiment was conducted using full-season (K836) and short-season (LM532) cotton cultivars in a moderate fertility field in the Yellow River valley in 2019 and 2020. A split-plot design was established for each variety with the main plots assigned to a mulching pattern (with or without plastic film mulching) and the subplots assigned to an N rate (0 or 195 kg N ha−1, abbreviated as N0 and N195). Cotton yield and yield components, biomass accumulation and distribution, and total N and 15N absorption and utilization were determined each year. Compared with N0, one-off basal application of N fertilizer (N195) did not increase boll density, boll weight, lint percentage or seedcotton yield regardless of cultivar or mulching. Biomass and total N uptake of cotton increased significantly in N195 compared with N0, but the increases occurred primarily in vegetative organs, leading to reductions in the harvest index and N yield efficiency index. With one-off basal application of N fertilizer, more than 80 % of the N in cotton plants derived from soil. Approximately 28 % of 15N-labeled urea was absorbed by cotton plants, of which only approximately 35 % was used in forming seedcotton yield. Therefore, cotton plants with one-off basal application of N fertilizer only recovered a small amount of fertilizer N, and even less of the fertilizer N was used in yield formation. As a result, the harvest index of cotton decreased, and thus, one-off basal application of N fertilizer failed to increase seedcotton yield. Cultivar and plastic film mulching did not alter the effects of one-off basal application of N fertilizer. • Cotton/peanut intercropping with annual location rotation (AIC) was established. • AIC was more productive due to superior photosynthesis or assimilate partitioning. • It increased income without extra inputs compared to traditional intercropping. • AIC may be a promising alternative to other cropping systems. Cotton/peanut intercropping and their rotation have been widely studied and adopted in many cotton and peanut growing countries including China. However, it is impossible to harvest two crops in the same year under the cotton/peanut rotation. And continuous cropping constraints as indicated by inhibited crop growth and development as well as yield decline remain under continuous cotton/peanut intercropping. We hypothesized that a combination of intercropping and rotation can resolve these constraints or challenges. In a preliminary experiment, the traditional intercropping (TIC) of cotton and peanut was established and studied using monocultures of cotton (MC) or peanut (MP) as the control. Field experiments were then conducted to develop an alternate intercropping (AIC) of wide-strip cotton/peanut intercropping in combination with strip rotation (strips of the two crops were grown inter-annually in an alternate manner). Crop productivity, leaf photosynthesis, dry matter accumulation and partitioning, and main nutrient uptake as well as input-output and net returns of the new system were evaluated as compared with TIC, MC and MP for two consecutive years. Results showed that crop productivity varied significantly with cropping systems. On average, the TIC increased seed cotton yield by 16.9% and decreased peanut yield by 5.6%, while the AIC increased cotton yield by 21% without sacrificing peanut yield. The AIC increased the biological yield of peanut by 3.8% and harvest index by 2.4%; it increased the biological yield of cotton by 3.8% compared to TIC. AIC increased uptake of N, P and K in peanut by 6.3, 11.5 and 7.3%, as well as net photosynthetic rate, chlorophyll content and maximum leaf area index of peanut by 7.2, 8.9 and 4.4%, respectively, relative to TIC. Crop output value under AIC was 4.5% higher than that under TIC but the input value was the same; thus the net return under AIC exceeded that under TIC by 10%. The AIC increased crop productivity and economic return without additional input compared to traditional intercropping, thus is a promising alternative cropping system in the Yellow River valley and other areas with similar ecology. Tannic acid (TA) and its extraction were traditionally used for treatment of traumatic bleeding in China, and in the previous study we have demonstrated that TA could accelerate cutaneous wound healing in rats. We attempted to decipher the mechanism of TA in promoting wound healing. In this study, we found that TA could enhance the growth of macrophages and inhibit the release of inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, IL-8 and IL-10) through inhibition of NF-κB/JNK pathway. TA activated Erk1/2 pathway, leading to increased expressions of growth factors, bFGF and HGF. Scratch study revealed that TA did not directly regulate the migration function of fibroblasts, but could indirectly enhance fibroblasts migration by the supernatant of TA-treated macrophages. Transwell study further proved that TA stimulates macrophages to secrete exosomes enriched in miR-221-3p by activating the p53 signaling pathway, and the exosomes entered into the fibroblast cytoplasm and bound to 3'UTR of target gene CDKN1b which induced decreased expression level of CDKN1b, leading to promoting fibroblast migration. Plastic film mulching has been widely applied to improve crop productivity of full-season cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.). However, in a previous study, plastic mulching did not increase seed cotton yield of short-season cotton compared with non-mulching. The aim of this study was to determine why plastic mulching fails to increase seed cotton yield of short-season cotton. A short-season cultivar Lumian 532 was planted with or without plastic mulching at an experimental station in Linqing in the Yellow River valley of China in 2020 and 2021. Yield, yield components, leaf senescence, photoassimilate accumulation and partitioning, photohormone contents, expression of senescence-related genes, and root traits were examined each year. Seed cotton yield produced with plastic mulching was not significantly different from that produced with non-mulching in short-season cotton. Although number and size of early- and mid-season bolls were significantly greater with plastic mulching than with non-mulching, plastic mulching decreased number and size of late-season bolls by 34.0% and 8.8%, respectively. At the initial boll opening stage, photosynthetic rate and chlorophyll content in main-stem functional leaves were 36.2% and 24.1% lower, respectively, with plastic mulching than with non-mulching, but malondialdehyde content was 34.2% higher, suggesting that plastic mulching accelerated late-season leaf senescence. Canopy photosynthesis and photoassimilate partitioning to reproductive organs at the initial boll-opening stage were 68.1% and 9.4% lower, respectively, with plastic mulching than with non-mulching. Compared with non-mulching, plastic mulching increased abscisic acid and methyl jasmonate contents but decreased those of cytokinins content because of differential expression of hormone metabolism-related genes in late-season main-stem leaves. Plastic mulching also increased root distribution in the shallow soil layer and lowered root vigor in the late season, compared with non-mulching. Overall, plastic mulching negatively affected root distribution and function and altered expression of senescence-related genes and hormone metabolism-related genes to affect hormone balance, which led to accelerated late-season leaf senescence. Because of late-season leaf senescence, canopy photosynthesis and photoassimilate partitioning to cotton bolls were suppressed with plastic mulching, which led to fewer and smaller late-season bolls than those with non-mulching. Thus, plastic mulching failed to improve the seed cotton yield. Manual removal of the main-stem growth tip is traditionally used to break the apical dominance of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.). Chemical topping with plant growth regulators also effectively inhibits apical dominance. However, the effect of chemical topping on yield increases and whether plant density or ecological conditions affect its efficacy are unclear. Therefore, a three-year field experiment with a split-plot design was conducted to determine the effects of plant topping, plant density, and their interactions on cotton yield and related physiological and agronomical parameters at three sites with different ecological conditions in China. In each site, the main plots were assigned low, moderate, or high plant density and the subplots were assigned no topping, manual topping, or chemical topping. Growth, yield, yield components, earliness, and late-season leaf photosynthesis as well as labor and material inputs were examined each year. Compared with no topping, both chemical and manual topping greatly reduced plant height at all sites. Manual topping increased seed cotton yield and earliness in all tested plant densities and sites. However, plant density but not ecological condition greatly mediated the effect of chemical topping on yield. At low plant density, the yields with chemical topping were 4–6% lower than those with no topping and 5.5–10.8% lower than those with manual topping at the three sites. Although yields with chemical topping were comparable with those of manual topping at moderate and high plant densities, they were 8.6–12.8% higher at moderate density and 13.8–16.4% higher at high plant density than those with no topping across years and sites. Averaged across the sites, chemical topping reduced biological yield by 12.7% at low plant density. Although biological yield decreased slightly, chemical and manual topping increased the harvest index by 12.4% and 13.3% at moderate density and by 15.6% and 17.4% at high density, respectively. In comparison with no topping, the reduction in seed cotton yield with chemical topping at low plant density was attributed to insufficient biological yield, whereas the increase in yield at moderate and high plant densities was mainly due to greater partitioning of assimilates to reproductive tissues. Compared with manual topping, chemical topping produced 23.2% lower net returns as a result of lower seed cotton yield at low plant density but produced 8.1% and 20.9% higher net returns at moderate and high plant densities, respectively, because of savings in labor inputs and comparable seed cotton yields. In addition, chemical topping increased the earliness percentage compared with that of no topping. Abstract: Row covering with polyethylene film (plastic mulching) is a common practice for improving emergence, plant growth and yield of cotton in China. This is usually applied after sowing (conventional mulching, CM), but pre-sowing evaporation in spring would cause accumulation of salts and moisture loss in the surface layer of saline soils. Two experiments were conducted in Yellow River delta from 2004 to 2005 and during 2006, respectively to determine if row covering with plastic film 30d before sowing (early mulching, EM) supports better productivity of cotton than CM in saline fields. In the first experiment, we studied the effects of EM versus CM and no-mulching (NM), on soil microclimate, seedling physiology, cotton yield and earliness. The second experiment was conducted in seven sites to compare cotton yield between the two mulching systems. Results from the first experiment showed that both EM and CM could effectively improve stand establishment, plant growth, earliness and lint yield of cotton relative to NM control. However, compared with CM, EM increased stand establishment rate by 11.4% and plant biomass by 9.9% and lint yield by 7.1%. EM, relative to CM and NM, increased the photosynthesis (Pn) rate 6.8% and decreased malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration 7.4% and Na+ level 8%. These improvements were due mainly to delayed accumulation of salts, elevation of soil temperature and reduction of moisture loss with EM. The revenue from EM was higher than that from CM and NM, suggesting the increased yield by EM was enough compensate for additional costs. The multi-site experiment in 2006 showed that the yield advantage of EM over CM was not significant in two sites with lower salinity (ECe=∼6dS/m), but substantial (from 9 to 14%) in five sites with higher salinity (ECe=10–12dS/m). • Non-mulched short-season cotton produced less fiber but greater returns than mulched full-season cotton as it consumed less inputs. • Non-mulched short-season cotton delayed leaf senescence due to reduced boll load and produced comparable cotton yields to the mulched. • Non-mulched short-season cotton reduced the residual film pollution, thus offering an alternative to mulched full-season cotton. The early planting of full-season cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) at a moderate plant density under plastic mulching is a traditional means of growing cotton in the Yellow River valley of China. However, it is labor intensive, consumes a large amount of materials, and also results in residual plastic pollution in the soil. While our previous studies indicated that late planted short-season cotton under plastic mulching greatly reduces labor and material inputs and increases net revenue, the residual plastic pollution remains an issue. It is unclear if short-season cotton can be managed without yield loss in the absence of plastic mulching. A field experiment was therefore conducted using a random complete block design with four treatments, including the early planting of full-season cotton with (FCM) and without plastic mulching (FC), and the late planting of short-season cotton with (SCM) and without plastic mulching (SC), in the Yellow River valley from 2017 to 2019. The yield, yield components, input and output values, earliness, dynamics of flowering and boll setting, and late-season leaf senescence in cotton were examined. The results showed that early planted full-season cotton under mulching (FCM) produced a 21.1 and 20.4 % higher seedcotton yield and boll density, respectively, and improved earliness over the non-mulched treatment, while the boll weight did not differ significantly. Short-season cotton without plastic mulching produced comparable seedcotton yields to that with mulching (SCM), and there was no significant difference in average boll weight, boll density, or earliness between the mulching and non-mulching treatments. However, SC had a 7.0 and 12.1 % smaller boll density and boll weight, respectively, than FCM and thus produced a 17.9 % lower seedcotton yield. Therefore, SC produced 14.9 and 14.4 % greater net returns than SCM and FCM, respectively, because it consumed less labor and material inputs. Short-season cotton without plastic mulching delayed leaf senescence due to reduced boll load and thus increased boll weight in the late season compared with SCM. In addition, SC exhibited improved earliness as a result of a higher flowering rate, faster fruiting, and more concentrated boll opening than FCM. Short-season cotton without plastic mulching also avoided the residual film pollution in the soil. The overall results demonstrated that the late planting of short-season cotton without mulching is a promising alternative for sustainable cotton production in the Yellow River valley region of China as well as other cotton growing areas with similar ecology. Background: Researchers have paid little attention to the safety of drug use among community residents (CRs). Irrational use of drugs can lead to health risks. We investigated the situation of knowledge-attitude-practices (KAP) of CRs in Shenzhen (China) for safe use of drugs, and analyzed the main factors influencing drug use., Methods: A multi-stage, random sampling method was used. We used a validated questionnaire to conduct an online questionnaire survey on the demographic characteristics and KAP of safe use of drugs of CRs in 10 administrative districts of Shenzhen City. The KAP score of safe use of drugs of CRs was analyzed. Influencing factors were identified using a single-factor chi-squared test and binary logistic regression analysis., Results: A total of 7269 valid questionnaires were collected. The average scores of knowledge, attitude, and behavior were (9.08 ± 1.49) (possible range: 0-10), (37.82 ± 3.96) (possible range: 8-40), and (35.82 ± 4.56) (possible range: 8-40), respectively, indicating that they had a better grasp of safe use of drugs. Logistic regression analysis showed that sex, age, education level, occupation, monthly household income per capita, marital status, health status, and different sources of information were the main factors affecting the knowledge and behavior of safe use of drugs of CRs. In addition to the marital status variable, other variables also have a significant impact on attitude towards safe use of drugs of CRs., Conclusions: Male sex, lower education level, lower income level, average/poor self-rated health status, and single source of drug-use information were the main factors affecting safe use of drugs based on KAP theory. Background: The evidence of interactive effect of the toxic metal (TM) mixture and apolipoprotein E (APOE) ε4 gene on cognitive impairment in older adults is scarce. We aimed to explore whether the associations of single TMs and their mixture with cognitive impairment depend on APOE ε4 in Chinese community-dwelling older people., Methods: A total of 1148 older adults from a subset of the baseline survey of a cohort study were included. Blood arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), strontium (Sr), and vanadium (V) were detected by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. APOE gene (rs429358, rs7412) polymorphisms were analyzed by the Polymerase Chain Reaction instrument. Mixed effects logistic regression was applied to estimate the relationships of single TMs and APOE genotype with cognitive impairment. Weighted quantile sum (WQS) and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) models were performed to examine joint impacts of the TM mixture, as well as the interaction of the TM mixture with APOE ε4 genotype on cognitive impairment., Results: Pb displayed a significant linear association with an increased odds of cognitive impairment after adjustment for covariates (P trend  = 0.045). While APOE genotype did not show a significant correlation with cognitive impairment. WQS showed that the TM mixture was associated with an increased risk of cognitive impairment by 31.0% (OR=1.31, 95% CI: 0.92, 1.87) while no significance was found. BKMR exhibited a significant linear association between the TM mixture and cognitive impairment. Moreover, both WQS and BKMR indicated that Pb contributed the most to cognitive impairment within the mixture. Significant interactions of Pb or the TM mixture and APOE genotype on cognitive impairment were observed, contributing to 38.1% and 38.2% of total effects, respectively., Conclusions: APOE ε4 allele amplifies the associations of single Pb or the TM mixture with cognitive impairment. Background: To investigate the cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between depressive symptoms and the prevalence of frailty and its components in a nationally representative sample of middle-aged and older Chinese adults., Method: The China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) provided data on 2581 (after inclusion and exclusion criteria) adults aged ≥ 45 years. Every two years, face-to-face, computer-aided personal interviews (CAPI), and structured questionnaires were used to follow up with the respondents. The Chinese version of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression Scale (CES-D) was used to evaluate depressive symptoms, and the Fried criteria were used to measure frailty. The odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for the association of exposure (depressive symptoms at baseline) with the onset of the outcome (frailty and its components) in the individuals at baseline were analyzed by binary logistic regression., Results: At baseline, 11.62% of participants had frailty, and 57.92% had depressive symptoms. In the cross-sectional analysis, depressive symptoms (OR = 5.222, 95%CI 3.665-7.442) were associated with frailty. In the longitudinal analysis, after adjusting for the full set of covariates among participants free of baseline frailty, depressive symptoms were significantly associated with incident frailty during the short term (OR = 2.193, 95%CI 1.324-3.631) and the long term (OR = 1.926, 95%CI 1.021-3.632). Meanwhile, depressive symptoms were associated with an increased risk of weakness (OR = 1.990, 95%CI 1.250-3.166), slowness (OR = 1.395, 95%CI 1.044-1.865), and exhaustion (OR = 2.827, 95%CI 2.150-3.719) onset during the short-term. Depressive symptoms were associated with an increased risk of exhaustion (OR = 2.869, 95%CI 2.004-4.109) onset during the long-term., Conclusion: Among middle-aged and older adults, depressive symptoms could predict frailty during 2 years of follow-up and 4 years of follow-up. When considering potential confounding factors, depressive symptoms were considered a predictor of weakness, slowness, and exhaustion. Malnutrition early in life may have adverse effects on health later in life. The relationship between malnutrition and obesity parameters (body mass index [BMI] and waist circumference [WC]) and type 2 diabetes is inconsistent. This study aimed to identify the effects of famine exposure and obesity parameters on type 2 diabetes individually or in combination among middle-aged and older adults in China. Data were extracted from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study Wave1 in 2011. The sample involved 13,065 adults aged 45 to 90. The t- or F test was employed to compare age among groups. The chi-square test was utilized to compare baseline characteristics according to the categorical WC levels/BMI levels/famine exposure and examine between-group differences in type 2 diabetes (diabetes and non-diabetes). Odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were estimated by logistic regression models to estimate the individual and combined associations of BMI/WC levels and famine exposure with the prevalence of type 2 diabetes. In this study, 1559 (11.93%) individuals were exposed to Chinese famine during their fetal stage, 5132 (39.28%) and 4428 (33.89%) in childhood and adolescence/adulthood, respectively. Among BMI measurements, 3780 (28.93%) were overweight, and 1487 (11.38%) were obese, whereas WC measurements showed that 5408 (41.39%) were obesity. In addition, 831 (45.48%) males and 996 (54.52%) females reported type 2 diabetes. In multivariable-adjusted regression models, obesity parameters and famine exposure were independently associated with type 2 diabetes prevalence among all participants (P < .001). In the interaction analysis, there existed a trend of higher odds for prevalence of type 2 diabetes across all groups compared to the combination of no-exposed and normal BMI/WC level group (the most increase in odds, adolescence/adulthood-exposed group with central obesity in WC levels: OR 4.51 (95% CI = 3.42-5.95); adolescence/adulthood-exposed group with obesity in BMI levels: OR 5.84 (95% CI = 4.11-8.30; P for interaction <.001). This study aims to reveal the diversity characteristics of the fungal community in the surface of granite lithium ores and their weathering products sampled from the Yifeng lithium mines in Jiangxi Province, eastern China. According to the analysis of internal transcribed spacer1 (ITS1) high-throughput sequencing, significant differences in fungal community diversity on the surface of lithium ores and their weathering products have been revealed. The operational taxonomic unit (OTU) of the ore surface and its weathering products ranged from 280 to 624, which may depend on the mineral composition as well as the degree of weathering. The community composition of each sample was significantly different at the phylum level, especially between the weathering products in Ascomycota and Basidiomycota. Although Ascomycota and Basidiomycota were the dominant fungal communities in all samples, each sample has its own distinctive fungi. The trophic modes of the fungi were more complex than that of the bacteria. 10 different fungal trophic modes and 25 dominant functional fungal groups were disclosed, and the saprophytic community was found to be the dominant group. These fungi could accelerate the decomposition of environmental organic matter in the environment by producing hydrolases and oxidases. Chytridiomycota with the function of producing and regulating secondary metabolites were the representative fungi in all samples. Our findings would provide theoretical basis and research clues for understanding the relationship between weathering of granite lithium and fungal communities., (© 2024. Background: The interaction between physical activity (PA) and ambient particulate matters (PMs) on cognition is rarely investigated. Our study aimed to assess the interactions of PA and PMs on cognitive function in older adults., Methods: Our study comprised 3937 Chinese community-dwelling older adults. Cognition was evaluated using the Mini-Mental State Examination. PA information was gathered using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire. The data of PMs were obtained from China High Air Pollutants (CHAP). Linear regressions model and interaction plots were applied to assess and visualize the interaction of PA and PMs on cognition, respectively. Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) method was employed to visualize discernible thresholds for the interaction., Results: PMs were negatively associated with MMSE scores (PM 1 : β = -0.40, 95 % CI: -0.58, -0.28; PM 2.5 : β = -0.46, 95 % CI: -0.64, -0.29; PM 10 : β = -0.44, 95 % CI: -0.61, -0.26), and PA was positively affiliated with MMSE scores (β = 0.18, 95 % CI: -0.01, 0.38). Interaction plots and BKMR demonstrated that adverse connotations of PMs with MMSE increased with the elevated PA levels, and the positive associations of PA with MMSE scores were attenuated by increased PMs (all P interaction  < 0.20). Discernible thresholds for the interaction between PMs and PA on MMSE were found., Conclusions: Our findings suggest that PA should not be taken at higher PMs concentrations, and that low level of PA could be performed in PMs polluted environment to improve cognitive function. Background: Job burnout is a prevalent and emerging challenge in the primary medical system, causing mass turnover, especially of primary medical staff. Little attention has been paid to the different dimensions of job burnout (emotional exhaustion, personality disintegration, and reduced sense of achievement), which may hinder efforts to tackle high turnover intention among primary medical staff. From the perspective of conservation of resources theory, social support and psychological capital are basic resources with potential to diminish job burnout and thus lower turnover intention. However, there is insufficient research evidence on the relationships between social support, psychological capital, and the three dimensions of job burnout within the primary medical system., Objectives: Focusing on primary medical staff, this study conducts a path analysis to examine the correlations between two types of resources (social support and psychological capital) and the three dimensions of job burnout, and to test the impact of the latter on turnover intention. Based on the results, effective management strategies to improve the work stability of primary medical staff are proposed., Methods: Multi-stage cluster random sampling was used to select participants in Anhui Province, China. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire containing measures of the main variables and demographic questions. In total, 1132 valid questionnaires were returned by primary medical staff. Structural equation modeling was used for path analysis of the data., Results: Social support was negatively associated with emotional exhaustion (β = - 0.088, P = 0.020), personality disintegration (β = - 0.235, P < 0.001), and reduced sense of achievement (β = - 0.075, P = 0.040). Moreover, psychological capital was negatively associated with emotional exhaustion (β = - 0.079, P = 0.030), personality disintegration (β = - 0.156, P < 0.001), and reduced sense of achievement (β = - 0.432, P < 0.001). All three dimensions of job burnout positively affected turnover intention (emotional exhaustion: β = 0.246, P < 0.001; personality disintegration: β = 0.076, P = 0.040; reduced sense of achievement: β = 0.119, P = 0.001)., Conclusions: The results highlight the importance of social support and psychological capital for diminishing the three dimensions of job burnout for primary medical staff and, in turn, lowering their turnover intention. Accordingly, to alleviate job burnout and improve staff retention, material and psychological supports from leaders, colleagues, family, relatives, and friends are essential, as are measures to improve the psychological energy of primary medical staff., (© 2024. Background: Given the relatively high prevalence of vision impairment and the heterogeneity of visual changes among the elderly population, we aimed to identify the visual trajectories and to examine the predictors and consequences associated with each trajectory class., Methods: We analysed data from 2235 participants involved in the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th waves of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS), where vision impairment was evaluated using an adapted Landolt-C chart during each wave. We employed a growth mixture model (GMM) to identify distinct visual trajectories and logistic regression analysis to examine the predictors associated with each trajectory class. Furthermore, we investigated the effect of visual trajectories on distal consequences, including cognitive function, activities of daily living (ADL), instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), depression, anxiety, and fall risk. Within the CLHLS study, cognitive function was assessed using the Chinese version of the Mini-Mental State Examination (CMMSE), ADL via the Katz index, and IADL through a modified version of Lawton's scale. Lastly, depression was assessed using the 10-item version of the Centre for Epidemiologic Studies (CES-D-10), while anxiety was measured using the Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale (GAD-7). Fall risk was determined by asking the question: 'Have you experienced any falls within the past year?', Results: We identified two distinct visual trajectories in our analysis. Most older adults (n = 1830, 81.9%) initially had a good vision level that diminished ('high-baseline decline' group). Conversely, the remaining participants (n = 405, 18.1%) initially had a lower vision level that improved over time ('low-baseline improvement' group). The 'high-baseline decline' group was more likely to include older adults with relatively higher body mass index (BMI) (odds ratio (OR) = 1.086; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.046, 1.127), individuals with higher formal educational qualifications (OR = 1.411; 95% CI = 1.068, 1.864), those current engaging in exercise (OR = 1.376; 95% CI = 1.046, 1.811), and individuals reporting more frequent consumption of fruit (OR = 1.357; 95% CI = 1.053, 1.749). Conversely, the 'low-baseline improvement' group had a higher likelihood of including older individuals (OR = 0.947; 95% CI = 0.934, 0.961), residents of nursing homes (OR = 0.340; 95% CI = 0.116, 0.993) and those self-reporting cataracts (OR = 0.268; 95% CI = 0.183, 0.391) and glaucoma (OR = 0.157; 95% CI = 0.079, 0.315). Furthermore, the 'high-baseline decline' group showed a positive impact on distal consequences, adjusting for sex, birthplace, residence, main occupation, education, economic status, and marital status. This impact included cognitive function (correlation coefficient (β) = 2.092; 95% CI = 1.272, 2.912), ADL (β  = -0.362; 95% CI = -0.615, -0.108), IADL (β  = -1.712; 95% CI = -2.304, -1.121), and reported lower levels of depression (β  = 0.649; 95% CI = 0.013, 1.285). We observed no significant influence on fall risk and anxiety within the identified visual trajectories in the adjusted model., Conclusions: Vision in older adults with ocular disease could potentially be improved. Having formal education, maintaining an appropriate BMI, engaging in exercise, and consuming fruit more frequently appear to be beneficial for the visual health of the elderly. To investigate the screening and predicting functions of obesity- and lipid-related indices for type 2 diabetes (T2D) in middle-aged and elderly Chinese, as well as the ideal predicted cut-off value. This study's data comes from the 2011 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). A cross-sectional study design was used to investigate the relationship of T2D and 13 obesity- and lipid-related indices, including body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-height ratio (WHtR), visceral adiposity index (VAI), a body shape index (ABSI), body roundness index (BRI), lipid accumulation product (LAP), conicity index (CI), Chinese visceral adiposity index (CVAI), triglyceride- glucose index (TyG index) and its correlation index (TyG-BMI, TyG-WC, TyG-WHtR). The unadjusted and adjusted correlations between 13 indices and T2D were assessed using binary logistic regression analysis. The receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) was used to determine the usefulness of anthropometric indices for screening for T2D and determining their cut‑off value, sensitivity, specificity, and area under the curve (AUC). The study comprised 9488 people aged 45 years or above in total, of whom 4354 (45.89%) were males and 5134 (54.11%) were females. Among them were 716 male cases of T2D (16.44%) and 870 female cases of T2D (16.95%). A total of 13 obesity- and lipid-related indices were independently associated with T2D risk after adjusted for confounding factors (P < 0.05). According to ROC analysis, the TyG index was the best predictor of T2D among males (AUC = 0.780, 95% CI 0.761, 0.799) and females (AUC = 0.782, 95% CI 0.764, 0.799). The AUC values of the 13 indicators were higher than 0.5, indicating that they have predictive values for T2D in middle-aged and elderly Chinese. The 13 obesity- and lipid-related indices can predict the risk of T2D in middle‑aged and elderly Chinese. Among 13 indicators, the TyG index is the best predictor of T2D in both males and females. Background: Depressive symptoms are one of the most common psychiatric disorders, with a high lifetime prevalence rate among middle-aged and elderly Chinese. Obesity may be one of the risk factors for depressive symptoms, but there is currently no consensus on this view. Therefore, we investigate the relationship and predictive ability of 13 obesity- and lipid-related indices with depressive symptoms among middle-aged and elderly Chinese., Methods: The data were obtained from The China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Our analysis includes individuals who did not have depressive symptoms at the baseline of the CHARLS Wave 2011 study and were successfully follow-up in 2013 and 2015. Finally, 3790 participants were included in the short-term (from 2011 to 2013), and 3660 participants were included in the long-term (from 2011 to 2015). The average age of participants in short-term and long-term was 58.47 years and 57.88 years. The anthropometric indicators used in this analysis included non-invasive [e.g. waist circumference (WC), body mass index (BMI), and a body mass index (ABSI)], and invasive anthropometric indicators [e.g. lipid accumulation product (LAP), triglyceride glucose index (TyG index), and its-related indices (e.g. TyG-BMI, and TyG-WC)]. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was used to examine the predictive ability of various indicators for depressive symptoms. The association of depressive symptoms with various indicators was calculated using binary logistic regression., Results: The overall incidence of depressive symptoms was 20.79% in the short-term and 27.43% in the long-term. In males, WC [AUC = 0.452], LAP [AUC = 0.450], and TyG-WC [AUC = 0.451] were weak predictors of depressive symptoms during the short-term (P < 0.05). In females, BMI [AUC = 0.468], LAP [AUC = 0.468], and TyG index [AUC = 0.466] were weak predictors of depressive symptoms during the long-term (P < 0.05). However, ABSI cannot predict depressive symptoms in males and females during both periods (P > 0.05)., Conclusion: The research indicates that in the middle-aged and elderly Chinese, most obesity- and lipid-related indices have statistical significance in predicting depressive symptoms, but the accuracy of these indicators in prediction is relatively low and may not be practical predictors., (© 2024. The purpose of the study was to determine whether changes in body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) in middle-aged and elderly Chinese are associated with metabolic syndrome. In this cohort investigation, 3697 middle-aged and elderly people aged 45 or over were recruited from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). The National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (2005) defined metabolic syndrome (MetS). With Cox regression analysis, we calculated hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for MetS based on BMI-WC change categories. To assess the prevalence of MetS, the changes in BMI and WC levels were classified into four quartiles based on their relative and absolute changes. In subjects whose BMI and WC decreased (HR = 0.338; 95% CIs 0.264, 0.433) as well as those whose BMI increased and their WC decreased (HR = 0.375; 95% CIs 0.228, 0.499), metabolic syndrome risk was significantly lower compared with those with increases in both BMI and WC. Regarding the absolute changes in BMI, the lowest percentile of BMI was significantly lower in both males (HR = 0.302; 95% CIs 0.204, 0.448) and females (HR = 0.486; 95% CIs 0.354, 0.667) for the risk of metabolic syndrome. Similar results were observed in the absolute changes in WC, with the lowest quantile of WC having a significant impact on MetS risk in males (HR = 0.170; 95% CIs 0.107, 0.270) and females (HR = 0.303; 95% CIs 0.217, 0.424). The risk of metabolic syndrome was significantly associated with changes in BMI and WC in middle-aged and elderly Chinese.
