Previous studies on students' conceptions of learning science (COLS) have focused primarily on formal environments. In these studies, students' COLS were positively associated with their approaches to and outcomes for science learning. However, little research has been conducted to explore students' conceptions of learning science in informal environments (COLSIE), despite its importance to students' academic achievement. To fill this research gap, this study qualitatively and quantitatively explored Chinese primary school students' COLSIE. First, in Study I, interview data gathered from a group of 80 students were analysed using the phenomenographic method, and ten hierarchical categories of COLSIE emerged (e.g., communicating and explaining). Based on these categories, a survey was developed and distributed to another group of 414 students in Study II. Exploratory factor analysis was conducted to validate the survey, which revealed nine factors matching the ten categories except for the initial categories of applying and understanding. This study also revealed the commonalities and uniqueness of COLSIE in comparison with students' COLS in formal environments. The findings suggested that informal science learning experiences may strengthen students' impressions of science practices. Science educators are encouraged to provide their students with opportunities to engage with science practices in informal environments.

Formal understanding of the nature of science (NOS) has been considered to be a major contributor to nurturing students' scientific literacy. In China, this view has been endorsed in the new standard for high school physics curriculum, which has guided the development of the new generation physics textbooks. Following the analytical framework established in the recent literature, this study evaluates the NOS representations in five textbooks approved by the Chinese Ministry of Education regarding the extent, the manner (explicit vs. implicit), the accuracy and completeness (from naïve to informed), and the overall consistency of different aspects of NOS. The results show that the representations of NOS in all five physics textbooks are far from satisfactory. The aspects of NOS are fully represented by only three textbooks. For all textbooks, the NOS representations are distributed unevenly throughout the contents, most of which are presented in a few pages of the preface and postscript chapters. Meanwhile, more than half of the aspects are represented implicitly, and the scientific method is poorly or inconsistently represented in three of the five textbooks. It is suggested that NOS needs to be represented explicitly and distributed evenly throughout a textbook in future revisions of the textbooks.

Hyperlipidemia is a risk factor for stroke, and worsens neurological outcome after stroke. Endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs), which become dysfunctional in cerebral ischemia, hold capacity to promote revascularization. We investigated the role of dyslipidemia in impairment of EPC-mediated angiogenesis in cerebral ischemic mice. The high fat diet (HFD)-fed mice following by ischemic stroke exhibited increased infarct volumes and neurological severity scores, and poorer angiogenesis. Bone marrow-EPCs treated with palmitic acid (PA) showed impaired functions and inhibited activity of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). Notably, AMPK deficiency aggravated EPC dysfunction, further decreased mitochondrial membrane potential, and increased reactive oxygen species level in EPCs with PA treatment. Furthermore, the expression of fatty acid oxidation (FAO)-related genes was remarkably reduced, and carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1A (CPT1A) protein expression was downregulated in AMPK-deficient EPCs. AMPK deficiency aggravated neurological severity scores and angiogenesis in ischemic brain of HFD-fed mice, accompanied by suppressed protein level of CPT1A. EPC transplantation corrected impaired neurological severity scores and angiogenesis in AMPK-deficient mice. Our findings suggest that AMPK deficiency aggravates poor angiogenesis in ischemic brain by mediating FAO and oxidative stress thereby inducing EPC dysfunction in hyperlipidemic mice. Pentaphragma spicatum Merr. is an endemic wild edible plant of China belonging to the Pentaphragmataceae family. It is widely consumed by Shangsi County resident in Guangxi Fangchenggang. Initially, Pentaphragma was classified as a genus within the Campanulaceae family, but, later it was treated as part of the Pentaphragmataceae family. However, the chloroplast genome of Pentaphragmataceae has not yet been reported. In this study, we sequenced the first complete chloroplast (cp) genome of P. spicatum from Guangxi, China. The whole genome was 154,229 bp in length, consisting of a pair of inverted repeats (IR each 25,572 bp), a large single-copy region (LSC 84,884 bp), and a small single-copy region (SSC 18,201 bp). The complete genome contained 129 genes, including 87 protein-coding genes, 34 tRNA, and 8 rRNA genes. The overall GC content of the whole genome was 37.71%. Based on a maximum-likelihood phylogenetic analysis, it has been determined that P. spicatum is not phylogenetically related to Campanulaceae and supports the decision to classify it as a separate family, Pentaphragmataceae. The complete chloroplast genome of P. spicatum will help enhance and integrate the existing genome data of Asterales. This study investigated the spatial variability in soil organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN), soil microbial biomass carbon (SMBC), soil microbial biomass nitrogen (SMBN) and their possible relationships with other soil properties in the Hongqipao reservoir, which is dominated by different vegetation types. The results showed that there were high spatial variabilities in SOC, TN, SMBC and SMBN, and that the SOC, TN, SMBC and SMBN contents decreased with increasing soil depth in the Hongqipao reservoir. The SOC was significantly positively correlated with TN, SMBC, moisture content (MC) and negatively correlated with carbon to nitrogen ratio (C:N ratio) and bulk density (BD). Soil TN was significantly positively correlated with SMBC, SMBN, MC and negatively correlated with the C:N ratio, BD and pH. The SMBC was significantly positively correlated with SMBN, MC and negatively correlated with the C:N ratio, BD and pH. The SMBN was significantly negatively correlated with the C:N ratio and BD. All of the measures of soil properties in this study could explain the higher significant variability in the response variables (SOC, TN, SMBC and SMBN contents). The generalized additive model (GAM) showed that SOC and TN had different influencing factors in different soil depths. The structural equation model (SEM) showed that vegetation types had a significantly positive effect on TN and SMBN, and the soil depths had a significantly positive effect on SOC and a significantly negative effect on TN and SMBC. This study further suggests that vegetation types play a major role in determining the spatial characteristics of soil carbon and nitrogen, and any changes in the vegetation types in the reservoir may influence the distributions of soil carbon and nitrogen. Biochar has been widely recommended as an effective soil amendment for reducing nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions and nitrogen (N) leaching. However, the effects of biochar application to Lei bamboo plantations on soil N2O emissions and N leaching remain unclear. These effects on soil N2O emissions and N leaching were investigated in the present study using five treatments applied with the same amount of N: rice husk at 10 t ha−1 (10H) and 30 t ha−1 (30H), biochar at 10 t ha−1 (10B) and 30 t ha−1 (30B), and no additions (control, CK). Both the 10H and 30H treatments significantly increased cumulative N2O emissions compared to the CK treatment, with an increment of 0.78 and 2.20 kg N ha−1, respectively. The 30B treatment significantly reduced cumulative N2O emissions by 0.90 kg N ha−1, whereas the 10B treatment had no significant effect. The reduction in N2O emissions following the high-rate biochar addition was probably due to the increased pH and the total abundance of nosZ I and nosZ II genes. The 30H treatment significantly increased nitrate N (NO3−–N) and dissolved organic N (DON) leaching by 38% and 170% respectively compared to the CK treatment, and had the largest N loss via N2O emissions and N leaching, while the 30B treatment had the lowest N loss. Partial least squares path modeling revealed that soil chemical properties [ammonium nitrogen (NH4+–N), NO3−–N, DON, dissolved organic C (DOC), total N (TN), soil organic C (SOC), and pH] dominantly affected soil N2O emissions, while the total abundance of denitrifying genes (nirS, nirK, nosZ I, and nosZ II) were the key factors involved in reducing NO3−–N leaching. There was a strong positive correlation between cumulative N2O emissions and N leaching loss, which may be related to excessive N surplus in the soil. Our results suggest that the replacement of rice husk by its biochar at a high-rate would reduce the risk of N2O emissions and N leaching loss effectively from Lei bamboo forests in subtropical China. The portfolio model provides a new framework that enables farmers to make tradeoffs between the returns and risks of agricultural production. However, it has only been used in cost allocation among resources and in farmland allocation among crops at present. Thus, we conducted a portfolio model analysis based on an independent, mixed cross-section of data accounting for 1650 rural households in Minqin county, China, over a timescale of three years; the goal was to explore the feasibility and actuating extent of the portfolio model in optimizing the allocation of agricultural resources among crops other than farmland. The results showed that, by optimizing resource allocation among crops using a portfolio model, the return per unit resource of farmland, water, and labor increased by CNY 4.03 thousand per hectare, CNY 0.38 per cubic meter, and CNY 39.75 per day, without increasing risk, and with corresponding increases in use efficiency of 14.64%, 9.25%, and 13.55%, respectively, in the study area. Therefore, the portfolio model is a good tool for agricultural resource allocation optimization. Policy makers can manage agricultural resources according to their risk preference using this model. This study provides new insights into agricultural resource allocation and critical empirical evidence for return and risk management, as well as resource use efficiency improvement in agricultural production. River transport of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) to the ocean is a crucial but poorly quantified regional carbon cycle component. Large uncertainties remaining on the riverine DOC export from China, as well as its trend and drivers of change, have challenged the reconciliation between atmosphere‐based and land‐based estimates of China's land carbon sink. Here, we harmonized a large database of riverine in‐situ measurements and applied a random forest model, to quantify riverine DOC fluxes (FDOC) and DOC concentrations (CDOC) in rivers across China. This study proposes the first DOC modeling effort capable of reproducing well the magnitude of riverine CDOC and FDOC, as well as its trends, on a monthly scale and with a much wider spatial distribution over China compared to previous studies that mainly focused on annual‐scale estimates and large rivers. Results show that over the period 2001–2015, the average CDOC was 2.25 ± 0.45 mg/L and average FDOC was 4.04 ± 1.02 Tg/year. Simultaneously, we found a significant increase in FDOC (+0.044 Tg/year2, p =.01), but little change in CDOC (−0.001 mg/L/year, p >.10). Although the trend in CDOC is not significant at the country scale, it is significantly increasing in the Yangtze River Basin and Huaihe River Basin (0.005 and 0.013 mg/L/year, p <.05) while significantly decreasing in the Yellow River Basin and Southwest Rivers Basin (−0.043 and −0.014 mg/L/year, p =.01). Changes in hydrology, play a stronger role than direct impacts of anthropogenic activities in determining the spatio‐temporal variability of FDOC and CDOC across China. However, and in contrast with other basins, the significant increase in CDOC in the Yangtze River Basin and Huaihe River Basin is attributable to direct anthropogenic activities. Given the dominance of hydrology in driving FDOC, the increase in FDOC is likely to continue under the projected increase in river discharge over China resulting from a future wetter climate. Purpose: The effects of nitrogen (N) deposition and leaf litter addition on soil carbon (C) cycling have been widely studied. However, soil carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions linked to N deposition, leaf litter decomposition, soil microbial biomass, and enzyme activity remain poorly understood. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the interactive effects of N and leaf litter addition on soil CO2 emissions. Materials and methods: We conducted a 180-day laboratory incubation experiment by adding Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis) leaf litter and ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3, equivalent to 50 kg N ha−1 yr−1), both alone and in combination with one another, to the soil collected from a Moso bamboo forest in subtropical China. Results and discussion: After 180 days of incubation, the sole leaf litter addition significantly increased cumulative soil CO2 emissions by 207%, whereas the sole addition of N did not significantly affect. However, the combined effect of N and leaf litter addition on soil CO2 emissions was antagonistic. The addition of leaf litter alone enhanced dissolved organic C (DOC), total inorganic N, and microbial biomass C (MBC) concentrations in the soil. Nonetheless, the combined addition of N and leaf litter reduced lignin decomposition, soil MBC concentration, soil DOC, and soil C-degrading enzyme activities in comparison to leaf litter addition alone. Conclusions: The present study indicates that although the addition of leaf litter stimulates soil CO2 emissions, the deposition of atmospheric N can reduce this stimulatory effect and promote lignin accumulation in Moso bamboo forest soils. Simple Summary: Microbially fermented feed can improve the nutritional value and quality of the feed. Liquid feeding can increase feed intake and reduce the morbidity and mortality of piglets. Therefore, in this study, the integrated technology of a diet fermented with bacterial enzymes and liquid feeding was used to study its effects on the growth performance and intestinal health of weaned piglets. Compared with the control group (standard dry feed, control group), the diet of the liquid feeding group (liquid feeding group with fermented diet) was able to increase palatability, improve nutrient digestibility, and modulate metabolism, resulting in higher feed efficiency and better growth performance. The results of this study provide a reference for the development and utilization of antibiotic-free feed for weaned piglets. Microbial fermentation has been widely used to preserve or improve the nutritional properties of food. Liquid feeding can increase feed intake and reduce the morbidity of piglets. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of a diet fermented with bacteria and enzymes and liquid feeding on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, digestive enzyme activity, microflora, and expressions of intestinal development-related genes in weaning pigs. A total of 198 piglets (Duroc × Landrace × Yorkshire) with body weights of 8.70 ± 0.45 kg were assigned to three groups with six replicates per treatment, and 11 weaned piglets per replicate according to the initial body weight and sex. The three dietary treatments (all nonpelleted diets) were a standard dry feed as the control (CON), a control diet supplemented with antibiotics (AB), and a liquid feeding with a fermented diet (LFD). The liquid feeding diet, having the same composition and proportion of each ingredient as the control diet, was prepared by storing the dietary cereals (corn, soybeans, etc.) and water (1:0.5, wt/wt) in a closed tank at 26–30 °C with enzymes and bacteria, and then adding the remaining dietary ingredients immediately before feeding. The whole trial lasted 42 days. On days 11 to 14 and 39 to 42, fresh faecal samples were collected to evaluate the apparent total tract digestibility of nutrients. Performance, digestibility, serum physiochemical parameters, intestinal barrier function, microbiota, and microbial metabolites were measured. The experimental data were subjected to analysis of variance using the GLM procedure of SAS for a complete randomized block design, with a "pen" as the experimental unit. The results showed that the AB increased (p < 0.05) average daily gain and reduced (p < 0.05) feed conversion (F/G) over the course of 1–14 days compared to the control. The liquid feeding group significantly increased (p < 0.05) average daily gain, average daily feed intake, and final body weight compared to the other two dietary groups. The digestibility of crude protein, ether extract, ash, gross energy, Ca, and P also improved in the liquid feeding group. Moreover, the liquid feeding group significantly decreased (p < 0.05) serum urea nitrogen and D-lactate concentrations, as well as the activity of diamine oxidase, and increased (p < 0.05) serum total protein and glucose concentrations on day 14. Furthermore, the liquid feeding group significantly increased (p < 0.05) mRNA expressions of zonula occludens-2 (ZO-2) in the jejunum and zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1), ZO-2, occludin, and claudin-1 in the ileum. In addition, microbiota measurement suggested an increase in Lactobacillus content and a decrease in Escherichia coli with higher (p < 0.05) concentrations of acetic acid, propionic acid, butyric acid, and total volatile fatty acids in the caecal and colonic digesta of piglets in the liquid feeding group. In conclusion, the diet in the liquid feeding group was able to increase palatability, improve nutrient digestibility, and modulate metabolism, which resulted in higher feed efficiency and better growth performance in the piglets. Noninvasive differentiating thyroid follicular adenoma from carcinoma preoperatively is of great clinical value to decrease the risks resulted from excessive surgery for patients with follicular neoplasm. The purpose of this study is to investigate the accuracy of ultrasound radiomics features integrating with ultrasound features in the differentiation between thyroid follicular carcinoma and adenoma. A total of 129 patients diagnosed as thyroid follicular neoplasm with pathologically confirmed follicular adenoma and carcinoma were enrolled and analyzed retrospectively. Radiomics features were extracted from preoperative ultrasound images with manually contoured targets. Ultrasound features and clinical parameters were also obtained from electronic medical records. Radiomics signature, combined model integrating radiomics features, ultrasound features, and clinical parameters were constructed and validated to differentiate the follicular carcinoma from adenoma. A total of 23 optimal features were selected from 449 extracted radiomics features. Clinical and ultrasound parameters of sex (p = 0.003), interior structure (p = 0.035), edge (p = 0.02), platelets (p = 0.007), and creatinine (p = 0.001) were associated with the differentiation between benign and malignant follicular neoplasm. The values of area under curves (AUCs) of the radiomics signature, clinical model, and combined model were 0.772 (95% CI: 0.707–0.838), 0.792 (95% CI: 0.715–0.869), and 0.861 (95% CI: 0.775–0.909), respectively. A final corrected AUC of 0.844 was achieved for the combined model after internal validation. Radiomics features from ultrasound images combined with ultrasound features and clinical factors are feasible to differentiate thyroid follicular carcinoma from adenoma noninvasive before operation to decrease the unnecessary of diagnostic thyroidectomy for patients with benign follicular adenoma. Coal fire disasters generally occur in major coal-producing countries. They destroyed many coal resources and triggered various environmental problems. The identification and state assessment of coal fire areas are paramount to coal fire management. In this paper, a method for identifying coal fires by integrating land surface temperatures (LSTs) from multitemporal thermal infrared remote sensing and subsidence information from multitemporal interferometric synthetic aperture radar (MT-InSAR) is proposed. The method primarily consists of estimating the LSTs and subsidence values, normalizing and equidistantly partitioning the LSTs, estimating the thermal anomaly frequency (TAF), extracting high-subsidence areas, determining the thermal anomaly frequency threshold (TAFT), and identifying coal fire areas according to the TAFT. The coal fire ratio index (CRI) was developed to quantitatively evaluate the severity of coal fires and its variations. Midong District, Urumqi, Xinjiang, China, was selected as the study area. Forty-five Landsat 8 images and sixty-one Sentinel-1 SAR images were used to retrieve LST and subsidence time series, respectively. The proposed method and CRI were applied to identify and evaluate coal fires in the study area. The results demonstrate the satisfactory reliability of these methods compared with field surveys. The maximum CRI was 6.145 × 10-4 (July 28, 2019), and the minimum CRI was 2.685 × 10-5 (January 13, 2020). Coal fires in summer were more severe than those in winter. The CRI profile presented seasonal and annual periodicities and was affected by the local climate. The soil cohesion and humidity are higher in winter due to possible snowmelt, which weakens the interaction between oxygen and coal seams and the subsequent combustion of coal. The LST, thermal anomaly, and deformation information were combined in a time series overlay analysis to reveal the differences in the LSTs and subsidence values among mining areas, coal fire areas, and areas with both mining and coal fires. The TTG (tonalite‐trondhjemite‐granodiorite) rock suites are major building blocks of the Archean continental crust and their timing of formation and petrogenetic evolution are important keys to understanding the growth of continents in the Early Earth. Here we investigate trondhjemites from the Qiangxi Complex in the North China Craton and present petrological, geochemical and zircon U–Pb, REE and Lu–Hf data to understand the timing of their formation and petrogenetic history. The trondhjemites in our study belong to typical Archean Na‐rich TTG rocks and their geochemical features are similar to high‐Al TTG rocks. The geochemical characteristics of these rocks and the associated amphibolite indicate derivation from a subduction‐related hydrous basalt. The magmatic zircon grains from the trondhjemite samples show a peak 207Pb/206Pb age around 2,515 Ma. Magmatic zircon in the associated amphibolite also shows a similar age representing the timing of the protolith formation. Both the trondhjemites and amphibolite also contain metamorphic zircon grains which constrain the timing of metamorphism as 2,451–2,490 Ma, suggesting high‐grade metamorphism closely following the magmatism, associated with the assembly of the microblocks in the NCC. The geochemical characteristics and zircon age data presented in this study, in conjunction with those in previous studies from the Qiangxi Complex, suggest subduction‐related arc building occurred dominantly during 2.6–2.5 Ga. The Lu‐Hf isotope data from zircon grains in the trondhjemite and amphibolite samples of this study show dominantly positive εHf(t) values, indicating that the protolith magma was derived from juvenile components or depleted mantle. Our new results in conjunction with the data reported in earlier studies indicate a major crust‐building event through multiple magmatism during Neoarchean. The depleted mantle ages (TDM) of zircon in our samples range from 2,857 Ma to 2,605 Ma indicating that active subduction might have initiated in the late Mesoarchean, with the peak of magmatism during 2.6–2.5 Ga, followed by metamorphism at ca. 2.45–2.49 Ga. Understanding the trade-offs associated with the two operation stages of hydropower generation is critical for guiding efficient reservoir operations. Previous studies showed that the marginal return in Stage 2 is always higher than the marginal cost in Stage 1 if variations in tailwater levels are ignored. However, the tailwater level often raises faster than the reservoir water level, and thus reduces the net hydraulic head of the reservoirs with reaction turbines, especially in large-scale and low-head reservoirs. Therefore, this study considers the variations in tailwater levels and theoretically evaluates the marginal utility of the total power generation (TPG) in the two stages. It is found that the variation of TPG presents diminishing marginal utility and is closely related to the topography characteristics of the reservoir and downstream channels, as well as the relationship between releases in the two stages. The marginal return in Stage 2 might be lower than the marginal cost in Stage 1 when the release in Stage 2 exceeds that in Stage 1 for the reservoirs in which the tailwater level is sensitive to discharge and hydraulic head. This suggests that the carryover storage equalizing the marginal utility in the two stages is optimal, i.e., satisfying the marginal utility principle. Otherwise, the marginal return is always higher than the marginal cost, which suggests that as much carryover storage as possible should be saved. Following these findings, the reservoir states, represented by the storage difference and the total inflow in the two stages, that satisfy the marginal utility principle are identified. Further, the optimal carryover storage under different levels of inflow and storage difference is derived. The theoretical findings are verified with four hydropower plants in China. Results confirm the theoretical findings and show that two-stage hydropower generation coupled with operating rules can greatly improve the performance of hydropower generation. The Aobaotu Pb–Zn deposit (470,700 t; 1.51% Pb, 2.30% Zn) in the southern Great Xing'an Range, northeastern China, is hosted by the Late Jurassic volcanic tuff and structurally controlled by a near‐east–west‐trending fault. Three stages of mineralization were identified, namely, stage I of quartz ± pyrite veins, stage II of quartz–polymetallic sulphide veins, and stage III of late quartz–calcite veins. The quartz and calcite that formed in the three stages were selected for fluid inclusion and C–H–O isotope analyses. The results show that the ore‐forming fluid of the deposit belongs to the H2O–CO2–NaCl system at a medium temperature (concentrated at 220–300°C) and in low salinity (0.7–12.1 wt% NaCl equiv). The δ13C values of the calcite and ankerite are in the range of −8.4 to −4.8‰, indicating that as a source of deep magma. The δDV‐SMOW and δ18OH2O values of quartz range from −108 to −88‰ and 4.55 to 5.85‰, respectively, indicating that the initial fluid of the Aobaotu deposit was a mixture of residual magmatic and meteoric water. Sulphur isotope analysis of the sulphide minerals, that is, sphalerite, galena, pyrite, and chalcopyrite, yield δ34S value in a range of 1.44–4.94‰, indicating that sulphur is mainly derived from magma. In addition, the Pb isotopic composition of the sulphides indicates that the ore‐forming material has a mixed crust–mantle source. Zircon U–Pb dating suggests that the formation of the Aobaotu deposit is genetically related to the granodiorite porphyry (130.3 ± 0.9 Ma). The combined geochronology and isotopic evidence suggest that the Aobaotu deposit is a magmatic‐hydrothermal vein‐type Pb–Zn deposit, opposite to a volcanic Pb–Zn deposit as suggested before. The Xindian deposit is a medium tonnage (>5 tonnes of Au) quartz vein‐type gold deposit located on the south‐central part of the Liaodong Peninsula, China. A total of 37 auriferous quartz veins are hosted within the Paleoproterozoic metamorphic rocks of the Gaixian Formation and Late Triassic porphyritic biotite granite. Mineral paragenesis indicates that gold mineralization took place in three stages: early milky quartz‐pyrite stage, main gray quartz‐polymetallic sulfide and gold stage, and late quartz‐calcite‐pyrite stage. Silicification and pyritization are spatially and temporally associated with the main mineralization stage. Zircon U–Pb dating from dikes that predate and postdate the mineralization constrain the timing of mineralization to the Early Cretaceous, between 127.2 and 120.9 Ma. High‐precision in‐situ S isotope analyses yielded δ34S values for pyrite, sphalerite and galena of 10.1–11.0‰, 10.3–10.5‰, and 8.6–8.8‰, respectively, indicating that S was derived from the multiple sources. In‐situ Pb isotope analyses resulted in 208Pb/204Pb, 207Pb/204Pb, and 206Pb/204Pb ratios of 38.207–38.634, 15.598–15.668, and 18.027–18.143, respectively, for pyrite and galena, suggesting Pb derivation from a mixture of Gaixian Formation metamorphic rocks and other potential sources. In‐situ LA‐ICP‐MS trace element mapping and spot analyses show that the inner core of the pyrite (Py‐ic) formed early and is generally enriched in Au, As, Co, Ni, Bi, and Te, the outer core of the pyrite (Py‐oc) contains less Co, Ni, As, and Au, but more Cu, Pb, and Zn, whereas the rim of the pyrite (Py‐r) is enriched in Ag, Sn, Sb, Cu, Pb, and Zn. Trace element signatures of pyrite reveal that the mineralizing fluid was initially of magmatic‐hydrothermal origin, and subsequently modified by intensive interaction with the wall rock (Gaixian Formation). Our results consistently demonstrate that the Xindian gold deposit is resulted from fluid–rock interaction between the Early Cretaceous magmatic‐hydrothermal fluids and Gaixian Formation metamorphic wall rocks that enriched the metal budget of the mineralizing fluid. Then the addition of meteoric water significantly changed the physical and chemical conditions of the mineralizing fluid, triggering gold precipitation in the Xindian deposit. The results of our study expand the Early Cretaceous gold metallogenic models in the Liaodong Peninsula, highlighting the importance of the Gaixian Formation for regional gold mineralization. Two experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of different breeds and dietary nutrient levels on expressions of paired box (Pax) genes and myogenic regulatory factors (MRFs) in pigs. Thirty Large White (LW) barrows and thirty Chenghua (CH, a native breed of China) barrows were performed in experiment 1. Results exhibited that in the CH pigs the abundances of Pax3 at 105 and 220 d of age, Mrf4 at 63 d of age, Myf5 and Mrf4 at 220 d of age were higher than those in the LW pigs (p < 0.05). Meanwhile, the expressions of MyHC-І and ІІa in the CH pigs were upregulated, and the abundance of MyHC-ІІb were downregulated compared with those in the LW pigs at 105 and 220 d of age (p < 0.05). Moreover, the meat quality of the CH pigs was better than in the LW pigs (p < 0.05). In experiment 2, sixty LW pigs were randomly assigned to two dietary treatments meeting their nutrient requirements (NRC) or a diet with moderately reduced digestible energy, crude protein and Lys level by 560 kJ/kg, 1.48% and 0.34%, respectively (LOW diet). The results showed that the reduced dietary nutrient level increased (p < 0.05) the expressions of MyoG and Mrf4 at 105 d of age, Pax3, Myf5, and Mrf4 at 220 d of age, and upregulated (p < 0.05) the abundance of MyHC-ІІa at 105 and 220 d of age in LW pigs. In addition, a decrease in dietary nutrient level improved the meat quality in LW pigs (p < 0.05). Collectively, the expressions of Pax genes and MRFs were markedly different between the CH and LW pigs. The CH pigs exhibited higher expression levels of Pax3, Myf5, Mrf4, MyHC-І and ІІa, which may improved the meat quality. The Xiling gold deposit (>592 t @ 4.02 g/t) in the eastern Zhaoyuan-Laizhou gold belt of the Jiaodong Peninsula, is currently the largest gold deposit and deepest gold mine in China. This study presents microthermometric fluid inclusions data on quartz gangue, as well as trace element and S isotope data on pyrite from different mineralization stages and depths in the Xiling gold deposit to provide new insights into the spatio-temporal evolution of the ore-forming fluid that led to a giant Early Cretaceous gold deposit in the Jiaodong Peninsula. The δ34S values of pyrite range from 7.5 to 15.2 ‰, but vary temporally and spatially, reflecting a changes in physicochemical conditions as the ore-forming fluid migrated to different crustal levels over time, also suggesting Precambrian basement as the principal sulfur source. Trace element analyses of pyrite revealed that ore-forming metals were scavenged from the wall rock and then incorporated into the pyrite. Fluid inclusions data reveal that the ore-forming H 2 O-CO 2 -NaCl ± CH 4 fluid had a medium to high temperature (283–401 °C), medium-low salinity (1.91–8.00 wt% NaCl equivalent), analogous to most gold deposits in the Jiaodong Peninsula. Intensive interaction between the ore-forming fluid and wall rock changed the physicochemical conditions of fluid, leading to gold precipitation. The North China Craton contains voluminous gold deposits, which occur within the Northern Margin Gold Belt, the Southern Margin Gold Belt, and the Jiaodong Gold Province. However, relatively little is known of the gold deposits in the E–W-trending Northern Margin Gold Belt, which hosts 66 deposits with total reserves of >1000 tonnes. Based on a systematic summary of the geological features and ages of ore formation, three periods of gold mineralization can be distinguished: Permian–Triassic, Jurassic, and Early Cretaceous. Permian–Triassic gold mineralization occurs mainly as E–W-trending orogenic gold deposits with minor intrusion-related mineralization, formed in a syn- to post-collisional setting associated with closure of the Paleo-Asian Ocean. The Jurassic gold deposits occur in central and eastern parts of the Northern Margin Gold Belt as intrusion-related gold deposits that formed in a compressional setting associated with subduction of the Paleo-Pacific Plate. Early Cretaceous gold deposits in the eastern part of the Northern Margin Gold Belt are also intrusion-related, and formed in an extensional setting associated with rollback of the Paleo-Pacific Plate. The Xinfang deposit is a large gold deposit (>20 t of Au) on the southern edge of the Liaodong Peninsula, China. A total of 37 gold‐bearing orebodies are identified along NS‐ and NW‐striking faults and are mainly hosted by the Archean and Neoproterozoic metamorphic rocks. Three stages of hydrothermal mineralization are distinguished, including Stage I of dominant quartz ± pyrite (Py1), Stage II of quartz‐polymetallic sulfide (Py2), and Stage III of quartz‐calcite ± pyrite (Py3). Gold primarily occurs at the Stage II in association with intensive silicification, pyritization, and sericitization. Here, we report on high‐precision in‐situ LA‐MC‐ICP‐MS analyses of S and Pb isotopic compositions of the sulfide minerals and LA‐ICP‐MS analyses of trace element signature of the pyrite from the Xinfang gold deposit. The δ34S values of the sulfides range from 1.3 to 5.3‰, which is consistent with a magmatic origin of S. The sulfides yield 208Pb/204Pb, 207Pb/204Pb, and 206Pb/204Pb ratios of 37.497–37.773, 15.323–15.410, and 17.004–17.229, respectively, which deviate from the values of the wall rocks, suggesting an external Pb source. The in‐situ LA‐ICP‐MS spot analyses of the pyrite reveals that gold occurs in two generations of pyrite (Py2 and Py3) but at low concentrations (≤0.06 ppm for Py2, ≤0.24 ppm for Py3). Visible gold, however, only occurs in the Stage II assemblage as inclusions in pyrite and quartz, and is distributed along the margins or within the fractures of the sulfides. The Py2 shows high Co, Ni, and As concentrations and is depleted in other trace elements typical of a magmatic‐hydrothermal derivation. In contrast, Py3 exhibits low concentrations in most trace elements. Trace element mapping of Py2 revealed correlations between Fe and Co, as well as Ni and As, indicating their couped substitution in the pyrite structure. The available geological, petrographic and geochemical data consistently suggest that the Xinfang gold deposit formed during the Early Cretaceous by hydrothermal fluids of magmatic contribution. Following the enactment of the Labour Law in 1995, China's urban labour market witnessed a divergence in both gender wage gap and discrimination against female workers before 2007, and thereafter a convergence in both. Contributions of endowment differentials between male and female workers to wage gap were diminishing because of the consistent improvement in the female workers' endowments. Discrimination against women, on the other hand, kept increasing and exceeded that of endowment differentials and eventually became the dominating contributor by 2002. Driven by the optimisation of female workers' endowments, the execution of new labour market legislation, the transformation of previously limitless labour supply into shortage, as well as the reform of income distribution policies, a long-term trend of convergence in both gender wage gap and discrimination has been forming. The enclosure and ungrazing practices for grassland management result in accumulation of plant litter on soil surface thus affecting the available soil water and nutrients for plant production. We experimentally investigated the effects of litter on soil properties and plant growth in a prolonged enclosure grassland of Loess Plateau, China. Three different litter manipulations were conducted including removal of all litter, an untreated in-situ control with original litter levels, and a double litter treatment. Litter treatment experiments demonstrated that plant litter affected the superficial soil water. Soil water content in plots with in-situ or double litter is generally higher than that with litter removal. The depletion of soil water up to five days post rainfall is fastest in litter removal plots for the top soil, but no evident difference for the deep ones. Different litter treatments have no significant impact on soil total carbon, nitrogen as well as carbon/nitrogen ratio for consecutive two years experiments. Both above- and below-ground biomasses in plots of litter removal were less than those in the plots of in-situ and double litter treatment. Litter affects plant production mainly through the mechanical barrier regulating root zone soil moisture. Sedum ichangensis sp. nov., from Yichang, Hubei province, central China, is described and illustrated. The new species is similar to S. elatinoides and S. rosthornianum in its leaf and carpel morphology and differs in its creeping stems and solitary flowers. Background: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury is one of the most common injuries in sport. To reduce the risk of noncontact ACL injury, it is critical to understand the effects of an intervention program on neuromuscular control–related biomechanical risk factors. Hypothesis: A newly developed 4-week intervention program would significantly increase the knee flexion angle at peak impact posterior ground-reaction force and would significantly decrease the peak impact posterior and vertical ground-reaction forces in the stop-jump and side-cutting tasks, while the intervention effects would be retained after the training was completed. Study Design: Controlled laboratory study. Methods: A total of 22 male and 18 female collegiate basketball and volleyball players with biomechanical characteristics associated with increased risk of ACL injury were recruited and randomly assigned to either the intervention group or the control group. The intervention group executed a program to improve landing techniques through strength and plyometric training 3 times a week for 4 weeks while participating in their regular training. The control group participated in only their regular training for 4 weeks. Three-dimensional kinematic and kinetic data in the stop-jump and side-cutting tasks were collected at week 0 (the beginning of the study) and at the ends of weeks 4, 8, 16, and 20. Knee flexion angle and ground-reaction forces were calculated. Analyses of variance with a mixed design were performed to determine the intervention effects and the retention of intervention effects for each sex. Results: Male participants in the intervention group significantly increased the knee flexion angle at peak impact posterior ground-reaction force in the stop-jump task at weeks 8, 12, and 20 when compared with that at week 0 and with the male control group (P ≤ .002). No significant intervention effects on knee flexion angle and ground-reaction force were found in the side-cutting task for male participants. No significant interaction effects on takeoff velocities were detected in any task for male participants. No significant intervention effects on knee flexion angle and ground-reaction force were found in any task for female participants. Vertical takeoff velocity in the stop-jump task was significantly lower in the intervention group at week 20 compared with the control group (P = .011). Conclusion: A 4-week intervention program significantly increased the knee flexion angle at peak impact posterior ground-reaction force of male collegiate athletes in the stop-jump task without significant effect on the performance of the task. This intervention effect was retained for at least 16 weeks after the training was completed. The intervention program, however, did not affect knee flexion angle and ground-reaction force in any task for female collegiate athletes. A reduction in vertical takeoff velocity of the stop-jump task was observed for female collegiate athletes 16 weeks after the intervention. Clinical Relevance: The intervention program with strength conditioning and plyometric exercises could modify landing biomechanics of male collegiate athletes in a stop-jump task. This study aims to quantitatively evaluate the effects of hydrological and landscape characteristics on suspended sediment concentration and discharge (SSC-Q) hysteresis. Runoff and sediment data of 405 flood events were collected from 10 basins in Wudinghe River basin on the Loess Plateau of China. Hysteresis analysis is a key tool for the interrogation of transport of sediment, which have been shown to be important within catchments. It can provide insight into catchment function, allowing the development and testing of process-based hypotheses. The principal components and corresponding explanatory power were extracted quantitatively from hydrological and landscape characteristics via principal component analysis (PCA) and redundancy analysis (RDA), respectively. The most common hysteresis type was anticlockwise. The proportions of the total event sediment loads for different hysteresis types were not always generally correlated to the frequency of the corresponding events. Furthermore, the composition and explanatory power of controlling principal components varied among clockwise, anticlockwise, figure-of-eight, and complex hysteresis types. For hydrological principal components, the antecedent precipitation, intraday precipitation, and sediment principal components controlled clockwise, anticlockwise, and figure-of-eight hysteresis types, which had explained 47.03%, 58.82% and 52.05% of the variation of hysteresis index, respectively; the antecedent precipitation and time lag principal component controlled complex hysteresis type and accounted for 28.22% and 34.65% of the variation of hysteresis index, respectively. For landscape principal components, grassland principal component dominated clockwise, anticlockwise, and figure-of-eight hysteresis types, and accounted for 95.00%, 69.70%, and 92.00% of the variation of hysteresis index, respectively. Largest patch index principal component controlled complex hysteresis type and accounted for 100% of the variation of hysteresis index. Therefore, within this catchment, whereas hysteresis patterns varied due to all of the hydrological and landscape variables to some extent, precipitation, suspended sediment, area of grassland, and the largest patch area had stronger impact on hysteresis dynamics. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of moderately increased maternal dietary energy intake during gestation on foetal skeletal muscle development and metabolism with pig as a model. Methods: Twelve primiparous purebred Large White sows (initial body weight 135.5 ± 1.6 kg) were allocated to one of two energy intake treatments: normal-energy-intake group (Con, 30.96 MJ DE/day) as recommended by the National Research Council (NRC; 2012) and high-energy-intake group (HE, 34.15 MJ DE/day). The nutritional treatments were introduced from mating to day 90 of gestation. On day 90 of gestation, foetuses were examined by morphological, biochemical and molecular analysis of the longissimus muscle. Umbilical vein serum hormones were measured. Results: Sow body weight was increased in HE group compared with Con group ( P < 0.05), whereas foetal myofibre density was decreased ( P < 0.05). Meanwhile, protein concentration, creatine kinase and lactate dehydrogenase activities and umbilical vein serum triiodothyronine (T3) concentration were decreased in HE foetuses ( P < 0.05). Maternal HE diets decreased the mRNA abundance of muscle growth-related genes, myosin heavy-chain (MYH/MyHC) genes (MYH2 and MYH1) and insulin-like growth factor 1 and insulin growth factor-binding protein 5 ( P < 0.05). Furthermore, the protein expressions of myogenic differentiation factor 1, myogenin and fast-MyHC isoforms were reduced in HE foetuses ( P < 0.05). Conclusion: Our results suggest that moderately increased maternal dietary energy intake delays the differentiation and maturation in skeletal muscle of the foetus on day 90 of gestation. The low–carbon transition of iron and steel industry is vital for meeting China's CO 2 emission reduction targets. Industrial symbiosis provides important opportunities for CO 2 abatement in China's integrated steel mills (ISMs). A set of methodological rules were proposed for quantification of CO 2 abatement from industrial symbiosis. We defined both cleaner production inside an ISM and synergistic measures with other enterprises as symbiotic measures, and classified them into three groups. Three methods were proposed for quantifying CO 2 emission reduction under different data conditions. A case was designed on the basis of a typical ISM in China. The calculation results of our case showed that: 1) the three most effective symbiotic measures for CO 2 abatement were blast furnace gas (BFG) recycled on site as fuel and sold off site, coke oven gas (COG) recycled on site as fuel and sold off site, and blast furnace (BF) slag sold to cement industry; 2) at present utilizations of gaseous and solid waste/byproducts far outweighed the use of sensible heat in terms of their contributions to CO 2 abatement, which also indicated the abundant potentials in sensible heat recovery; 3) cleaner production inside an ISM contributed more to CO 2 abatement than symbiotic measures with other enterprises did, which proved the arguments of other studies. The calculation and analyses of the case tested the applicability of our definition and methodological rules, and provided a reference result for related research. This study investigated the effectiveness of functional insoles on plantar pressure distribution during race walking so as to reduce the high plantar pressure and force on race walkers, who tend to suffer from overuse injury. A total of 20 male race walkers aged 21.19 ± 3.66 years and with a mean height of 178.85 ± 14.07 cm were recruited as participants. Each participant completed a race walking with functional or normal insoles. Plantar pressure insoles were used to collect vertical plantar pressure data. A two-way analysis of variance with a mixed design was used to determine the difference between the two conditions. Results showed that the use of functional insoles reduces the peak pressure and the impulse in the metatarsophalangeal joints and heels and thus suggest that functional insoles reduce the overuse injury risks of these parts. Primary objective: Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is known to alter the integrity of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) in sepsis, although the underlying mechanism remains unknown. The aim of this study was to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying disruption of the BBB in LPS-induced sepsis. Research design: Both in vitro and in vivo experiments were designed to test the role of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) in LPS-induced BBB dysfunction. Methods and procedures: Human brain microvascular endothelial cells (HBMECs) were cultured. The protein expressions were detected by western blot. BBB integrity was determined by Evans Blue. Main outcomes and results: LPS (1 μg ml-1) dramatically increased the permeability of the BBB and the ROS productions, as well as reducing the expression levels of occludin and claudin-5 in cultured HBMECs. Inhibition of NAD(P)H oxidase by apocynin or up-regulation of AMPK reversed the LPS-induced abnormities in HBMECs. In LPS-induced sepsis in mice, it was found that LPS dramatically increased NAD(P)H oxidase protein expressions and ROS productions in the brain and disrupted BBB function assayed by Evans blue staining, which were abolished by AICAR treatment. Background. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is an individualized medicine by observing the symptoms and signs (symptoms in brief) of patients. We aim to extract the meaningful herb-symptom relationships from large scale TCM clinical data. Methods. To investigate the correlations between symptoms and herbs held for patients, we use four clinical data sets collected from TCM outpatient clinical settings and calculate the similarities between patient pairs in terms of the herb constituents of their prescriptions and their manifesting symptoms by cosine measure. To address the large-scale multiple testing problems for the detection of herbsymptom associations and the dependence between herbs involving similar efficacies, we propose a network-based correlation analysis (NetCorrA) method to detect the herb-symptom associations. Results. The results show that there are strong positive correlations between symptom similarity and herb similarity, which indicates that herb-symptom correspondence is a clinical principle adhered to by most TCM physicians. Furthermore, the NetCorrA method obtains meaningful herb-symptom associations and performs better than the chi-square correlation method by filtering the false positive associations. Conclusions. Symptoms play significant roles for the prescriptions of herb treatment. Measurements of methane flux at a few inundated sites in China have been extrapolated to obtain estimates on a national scale. To enable those national estimates to be refined and to compare flux from geographically separated sites comprising the same wetland types, we used a closed chamber method to measure methane flux in uninundated Betula platyphylla-and Larix gmelinii-dominated peatlands in the Northeast China. Our measurements were taken from both vegetated and bare soil surfaces, and we compared flux with environmental measures including vegetation biomass, soil temperature and soil characteristics. We found that methane flux was low, and that there were no significant differences between wetland types, indicating that environmental influences were dominant. We found that flux was positively correlated to temperature in the surface layers of the soil, the above-ground biomass of the shrub and herb layers, total soil carbon and total soil nitrogen; and we suggest that emissions may be due to anaerobic microcosms in the surface layers. The methane production potentials of the soils were low and similar between both sites but inconsistent with the differences between fluxes, and inconsistent with production potentials and fluxes reported from the same wetland types elsewhere, indicating that there were subtle environmental differences between wetlands classed as being of the same type. Differences between fluxes in vegetated chambers with bare soil chambers were insignificant, indicating that no methane emission through aerenchyma occurred at our sites. n inter-laboratory comparison of the AOAC mouse bioassay for paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) toxicity in shellfish was carried out among 25 Chinese laboratories to examine the overall performance for PSP testing in China, and to analyze the main factors affecting the performance of this method. The toxic scallop Patinopecten yessoensis collected from coast of Bohai Sea, China, was used as a test sample in the comparison study. The results were reported and evaluated using robust statistical methods. The z scores showed that 80%, 8%, and 12% of laboratories reported satisfactory results, unsatisfactory results, and questionable results, respectively. Abstract: Green GDP is an effective economic indicator of urban environmental management. This paper introduces a new method of accounting Green GDP, which puts the value of direct ecosystem services into GDP. Direct ecosystem services are weighted by their virtual prices and aggregated in the same way as market goods and services in GDP. They are components of nature, directly enjoyed, consumed, or used to yield human well-being. They belong to ecosystem services. In order to choose direct ecosystem services reasonably, two principles are put forward. That is, when calculating the value of ecosystem services for Green GDP, the differences between services for human beings and services for other living beings must be considered. And the green GDP of Wuyishan city of China is accounted, considering the direct ecological services value of urban ecosystem as environmental benefit. Using a panel of 29 provinces over the years 1995-2001, we explore the large regional variation in industry wage differentials in China and examine the provincial characteristics that are consistent with greater inequality. We find that the effect of foreign direct investment (FDI) varies by province. One of the reasons that FDI can have differential effects is that the type of FDI (export vs. import-oriented) varies substantially across the provinces. Export-oriented FDI raises the wages of workers in industries that rely more on unskilled workers and lowers the wages of workers in industries that rely more on skilled workers, lowering the industry differential. In drought years, most residents fail to improve water use efficiency due to residential water supply normally being prioritized in many regions, which makes other low-priority industrial water users suffer more from water shortage. This paper proposes a Pricing Strategy for Residential Water (PSRW), a water tariff that changes on annual time scale, based on the scarcity value of water resources, aiming to promote residential water conservation and reallocate water resources across the residential and industrial sectors during droughts. An optimization model to maximize the total benefit of residents and industrial sectors is introduced based on marginal benefit and price elasticity. The water shortage of industrial sectors is used to reflect the scarcity of water resources, and the lowest water supply standard for households and the maximum proportion of household water fee expenditure (HWFE) to household disposable income (HDI) are used to ensure the residents' acceptability to price raising. It shows an "S-type" relationship between the optimal price raising coefficient and industrial water shortage, and two turning points are found in the curve, which are the starting and stopping points of price raising. The appearance of starting point depends on the non-negative net benefit, and the stopping point is affected by the factors that represent the residents' acceptability to price raising. The application to Tianjin, a city in northern China with the rapid growth of population and economy but scarce water resources, shows PSRW is a potential means to improve water efficiency and optimize water resource allocation in water scarcity situations. • The geochronological framework of the Wulong orefield has been reconstructed. • Zircon U-Pb geochronology delineates the two main magmatic events in the Wulong orefield. • Molybdenite Re-Os and monazite U-Th-Pb geochronology record the Wulong gold mineralization occurred at 127 Ma. • The Wulong gold mineralization is contemporaneous with the Early Cretaceous magmatism, related to lithospheric thinning under the northeastern North China Craton. The Wulong deposit is a large tonnage deposit (>80 t of Au), characterized by quartz vein style of gold mineralization in the Liaodong Peninsula, China. The auriferous quartz veins are mainly hosted by Late Jurassic gneissic two-mica granite (165–157 Ma) and Early Cretaceous granodiorite (129 Ma) and are structurally controlled by NNE- and NW-trending faults. Previous attempts to date the gold mineralization yielded ambiguous results (135–112 Ma). Here we report the first in-situ and direct age constraint for gold mineralization at Wulong. Five molybdenite samples from Mo-bearing quartz ± pyrite veins yielded an isochron age of 127.6 ± 2.3 Ma. In-situ SIMS U-Th-Pb dating of hydrothermal monazite that coexists with gold-bearing pyrite and quartz yielded a 208Pb-232Th age of 126.7 ± 3.2 Ma. These robust ages, together with new age data of the Wulong host intrusion and post-ore dike, allow for a better interpretation of the ore genesis of the Wulong deposit relative to a well constrained sequence of regional geological events. Zircon U-Pb dating of the Wulong host intrusion (gneissic two-mica granite), representing the oldest magmatic event at Wulong, gave a weighted mean age of 159.3 ± 1.4 Ma that is interpreted to be the magma emplacement age. Subsequent magmatic events are recorded by the Early Cretaceous dikes with zircon U-Pb ages between 127 and 113 Ma. A post-ore diorite porphyry dike that crosscuts the Early Cretaceous dikes has a U-Pb zircon age of 121.5 ± 1.5 Ma. All the lines of geochronology evidence suggest a distinct genetic link between the gold mineralization and the Early Cretaceous magmatism in the Wulong orefield. This episode of magmatism and mineralization corresponds to the lithospheric thinning within the northeastern North China Craton, which is triggered by the subduction of the Paleo-Pacific plate. Crop evapotranspiration (ET) is the largest water consumer of agriculture water in an irrigation district. Remote sensing (RS) technique has provided an effective way to map regional ET using various RS-based ET models over the past several decades. To map growing season ET of different crops and partition ET into evaporation (E) and transpiration (T) at regional scale, appropriate ET models should be further integrated with crop distribution maps in different years and crop growing seasons determined for each crop pixel. In this study, a hybrid dual-source scheme and trapezoid framework-based ET Model (HTEM) fed with HJ-1A/1B data was applied in Hetao Irrigation District (HID) of China from 2009 to 2015 to map crop growing season ET and T at 30 m resolution. The HTEM model with HJ-1A/1B data performed well in estimating ET in HID, and the finer spatial resolution of model input data can improve the estimation accuracy of ET. Combined with the annual crop planting map identified in previous study, and crop growing seasons determined from fitted Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) curves for crop pixels, the spatial and temporal variations of growing season ET and T of major crops (maize and sunflower) were examined. The results indicate that ET and T of maize and sunflower reach their minimum values in the southwest HID with smaller crop planting density, and reach their maximum values in northwest HID with higher crop planting density. Over the study period with a decreasing trend of available irrigation water, ET and T in maize and sunflower growing seasons show decreasing trends, while ratios of T/ET show increasing trends, which implies that the adverse effect of decreased irrigation water diversion on crop growth is diminished due to the favorable portioning of E and T in cropland of HID. In addition, the calculation results of crop coefficients show that there is water stress to crop growth in the study area. The present results are helpful to better understand the spatial pattern of crop water consumption and water stress of different crops during crop growing season, and provide the basis for optimizing the spatial distribution of crop planting with less water consumption and more crop yield. Background: The barriers to access diagnosis and receive treatment, in addition to insufficient case identification and reporting, lead to tuberculosis (TB) spreads in communities, especially among hard-to-reach populations. This study evaluated a community-based active case finding (ACF) strategy for the detection of tuberculosis cases among high-risk groups and general population in China between 2013 and 2015. Methods: This retrospective cohort study conducted an ACF in ten communities of Dongchuan County, located in northeast Yunnan Province between 2013 and 2015; and compared to 136 communities that had passive case finding (PCF). The algorithm for ACF was: 1) screen for TB symptoms among community enrolled residents by home visits, 2) those with positive symptoms along with defined high-risk groups underwent chest X-ray (CXR), followed by sputum microscopy confirmation. TB incidence proportion and the number needed to screen (NNS) to detect one case were calculated to evaluate the ACF strategy compared to PCF, chi-square test was applied to compare the incidence proportion of TB cases' demography and the characteristics for detected cases under different strategies. Thereafter, the incidence rate ratio (IRR) and multiple Fisher's exact test were applied to compare the incidence proportion between general population and high-risk groups. Patient and diagnostic delays for ACF and PCF were compared by Wilcoxon rank sum test. Results: A total of 97 521 enrolled residents were visited with the ACF cumulatively, 12.3% were defined as high-risk groups or had TB symptoms. Sixty-six new TB patients were detected by ACF. There was no significant difference between the cumulative TB incidence proportion for ACF (67.7/100000 population) and the prevalence for PCF (62.6/100000 population) during 2013 to 2015, though the incidence proportion in ACF communities decreased after three rounds active screening, concurrent with the remained stable prevalence in PCF communities. The cumulative NNS were 34, 39 and 29 in HIV/AIDS infected individuals, people with positive TB symptoms and history of previous TB, respectively, compared to 1478 in the general population. The median patient delay under ACF was 1 day (Interquartile range, IQR: 0–27) compared to PCF with 30 days (IQR: 14–61). Conclusions: This study confirmed that massive ACF was not effective in general population in a moderate TB prevalence setting. The priority should be the definition and targeting of high-risk groups in the community before the screening process is launched. The shorter time interval of ACF between TB symptoms onset and linkage to healthcare service may decrease the risk of TB community transmission. Accurate knowledge of spatially distributed evapotranspiration (ET) is essential for better understanding the availability and utilization of water resources. Over the past several decades, remote sensing (RS) technique has been widely applied to acquire indispensable input data for the estimation of ET at different spatial and temporal scales. Several dual-source ET models that can partition evaporation and transpiration have been developed by utilizing remote sensing data and ancillary meteorological observations. However, due to the significant spatial variability of air temperature over heterogeneous land surface, these models typically cannot be applied in heterogeneous regions with scarce meteorological observations. In the present study, a new model, referred to as the HTEM-ABL model, is developed by coupling the Hybrid dual-source scheme and Trapezoid framework-based ET Model (HTEM) with a simple atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) model for ET estimation without ancillary air temperature observations. This model uses Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data as the main input and is evaluated with field observations over a large irrigation district in North China. Results show that the HTEM-ABL model can be well applied to the study area, and the accuracy of HTEM-ABL model is slightly superior to the original HTEM model. The root mean square errors between the calculated and measured ET are 0.63 mm/day and 29.6 mm/year at the field scale and the regional scale, respectively. Furthermore, the estimated air temperature has been proved to be accurate qualitatively and quantitatively, and provides another aspect to evaluate the HTEM-ABL model. The spatial and temporal distributions of ET produced by the HTEM-ABL model are in good agreement with both the distribution of land use types and the variations of crop growth stages. Simple Summary: In China, large quantities of maize are stored in grain depots for two years or more to mitigate the risk of natural disasters impacting feed supplies. However, it is unknown whether the use of long-term stored maize in diets will impair growth performance of piglets, and whether additional dietary oxidants would further exacerbate the effects. This study investigates the effects of dietary aged maize with the supplementation of different levels of oxidized fish oil on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, serum antioxidant activity and gut health in piglets and tries to provide a theoretical foundation for the better use of aged maize in swine production. The results of this study showed that aged maize had no significant effect on growth performance, diarrhea and nutrient digestibility of the piglets, but it did reduce serum antioxidant capacity. When oxidized fish oil was added, aged maize reduced serum antioxidant capacity further, inhibited the expressions of genes related to intestinal nutrient transport, promoted intestinal inflammation, and also reduced the apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of nutrients, increased diarrhea and finally reduced the growth performance of piglets. Thus, the use of aged maize in the diet of the piglets may be not feasible, especially when other oxidation-inducing factors existed, which would exacerbate the negative effects of the aged maize. This study aimed to determine the effects of dietary aged maize with supplementation of different levels of oxidized fish oil on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, serum antioxidant activity and gut health in piglets. Forty-two piglets were arranged in 2 × 3 factorial treatments in a complete randomized block design with seven replicates per treatment and one pig per replicate for 28 d. Diets included twp types of maize (normal maize or aged maize) and three levels of oxidized fish oil (OFO) (3% non-oxidized fish oil (0% OFO), 1.5% OFO and 1.5% non-oxidized fish oil (1.5% OFO), and 3% OFO (3% OFO). Results showed that dietary aged maize did not affect growth performance, diarrhea, and the apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of nutrients in piglets (p > 0.05). However, aged maize increased malonaldehyde (MDA) content and decreased total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) in serum on both 14th and 28th days (p < 0.05) compared to the normal maize groups. Meanwhile, compared with normal maize, dietary aged maize showed a slight, but not significant (p > 0.10) decrease in total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD) activity and VE content in serum on the 14th day. In addition, aged maize significantly decreased GLUT2 mRNA expression (p < 0.05) and tended to increase (p < 0.10) TNF-α and IL-6 mRNA expression in jejunal mucosa. Compared with non-oxidized fish oil, oxidized fish oil resulted in the decrease of the 14–28 d and 0–28 d ADG, as well as the ATTD of dry matter (DM), ether extract (EE), organic matter (OM) (p < 0.05), whereas the increase in diarrhea index (p < 0.05) and F/G of the whole period (p < 0.05). Oxidized fish oil decreased serum T-AOC on both the 14th and the 28th days (p < 0.05), and decreased serum T-SOD activity and VE content on the 28th day (p < 0.05), whereas increased serum MDA content on the 28th day (p < 0.05) and 14th day (p < 0.10) compared with fresh fish oil. Meanwhile, MUC2 (p < 0.05) and SGLT1 (p < 0.10) mRNA expression in jejunal mucosa were decreased compared with non-oxidized fish oil. In addition, dietary oxidized fish oil tended to decrease 14–28 d ADFI and the ATTD of CP (p < 0.10), and piglets fed oxidized fish oil significantly decreased 14–28 d ADFI, the ATTD of CP, GLUT2 and SGLT1 mRNA expressions in jejunal mucosa when piglet also fed with aged maize (p < 0.05). Collectively, these results indicated that dietary oxidized fish oil decreased growth performance and nutrients digestibility of piglets fed with aged maize. Simple Summary: Beta-glucan is currently under consideration as an alternative to in-feed antibiotics for the sustainable pig production industry in China. Modulating intestinal function by β-glucan treatment in young pigs is one potential way of decreasing disease susceptibility and presumably increasing growth performance. In the present study, as a newly developed commercial product, β-glucans have proved to modulate gut function, and have improved growth performance in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-challenged piglets. The present study aimed to determine the mechanisms involved inβ-glucan of low and high molecular weight mediated growth alterations in weaned piglets. The results confirmed that β-glucans isolated from Agrobacterium sp. ZX09 could improve growth performance in weaned piglets and they showed intestinal modulatory properties via different mechanisms in regulating the mucosal barrier function and microbial populations between two different molecular weight β-glucans. This study investigated β-glucan derived from Agrobacterium sp. ZX09 with high (2000 kDa) and low (300 kDa) molecular weight (MW) to compare their effects on growth performance and gut function in LPS-induced weaned piglets. Changes in jejunal morphology, mucosal barrier function, microbial populations, and fermentation in the piglets were determined. Data showed that β-glucan prevented body weight loss in LPS challenged piglets. Supplementation with both β-glucan fractions improved jejunal morphology. Compared to low MW, β-glucan of high MW generally up-regulated transcripts of ZO-1, MUC1, and MUC2 in jejunal mucosa to a lesser extent. Mucosal D-lactate, diamine oxidase, and anti-oxidation index were effectively resumed in β-glucan treatment. Both β-glucan diets provoked the emergence of a balanced microbiota and a richer concentration of volatile fatty acids in the colon. The richest community of bifidobacterium and concentration of butyrate emerged after feeding β-glucan with high MW. Results suggested that the effect of Agrobacterium sp. ZX09 β-glucans on the gut-modulatory function is largely linked to their MW. Low MW β-glucan mainly improved the mucosal barrier function in the jejunum, while high MW β-glucan had profound effects on the microbial community and fermentation in the hindgut of piglets. However, the interactive effects of N deposition and biochar application on soil R H in subtropical forest ecosystems remain unclear. Here, we conducted a three-year (2019–2022) field trial within a bamboo forest in subtropical China to examine the responses of soil physicochemical and microbial properties to N deposition and biochar application, and to elucidate how biochar regulates N deposition-induced change in soil R H. Nitrogen deposition stimulated soil R H by 8.1–9.8 % annually over three years compared to the control, and this stimulation was mitigated (by 8.1–8.9 % annually) with biochar addition. In the context of N deposition, the decrease of soil R H by biochar application was not through changing soil temperature, moisture or labile organic carbon content. Biochar treatment reduced the abundances of bacterial glycoside hydrolase family 48 gene (GH48) and fungal glycoside hydrolase family 7 cellobiohydrolase I gene (cbh I) and the activities of β-glucosidase and cellobiohydrolase (CBH), but increased the abundance of cbbL gene and activity of RubisCO enzyme. Furthermore, the R H was correlated positively (P < 0.01) with β-glucosidase and CBH activities and negatively (P < 0.01) with RubisCO enzyme activity. Structural equation modeling revealed that the biochar-induced reduction of soil R H under N deposition was associated with decreases in the abundance of cbh I gene and the activity of CBH in soils. We highlight that management practices can mitigate soil carbon loss in forests through modulating soil microbial functions under atmospheric N deposition, and that biochar application in Moso bamboo forests has the potential to reduce R H by approximately 7.6 × 106 t CO 2 yr−1 under atmospheric N deposition. [Display omitted] • Calcite from two mineralization stages displays distinct REE enrichment, the early calcite more enriches the HREE, and the late calcite depletes HREE and relatively enriches LREE. • Xenotime is an independent mineral mainly enriched HREE in the Jialu REE deposit, especially the Y element. • The REE mineralization that occurred at 239.2–240.9 Ma was first reported in the Jialu deposit, which recorded an important metallogenic event in the Triassic period. The Jialu carbonatites (∼240 Ma) in the Qinling orogenic belt are characterized by the enrichment of heavy rare earth elements compared with typical global carbonatites. The carbonatites are dominantly comprised of calcite, quartz, sulfate, K-feldspar, minor sulfides, and rare earth minerals such as monazite, bastnäsite, parisite, and xenotime, with two mineralization stages including the early quartz-K-feldspar-calcite stage (Stage I) and the late sulfide-rare earth mineral-calcite stage (Stage II). The rare earth element contents of Stage I calcite are higher than those of the Stage II, especially heavy rare earth elements. Calcite from the different mineralization stages exhibits variable chondrite-normalized REE patterns, with the HREE and REE abundances (134–1023 ppm) decreasing from the early to the late stage owing to the crystallization of xenotime. The δ13C (−5.39 ‰ to −6.68 ‰) and slightly higher δ18O (10.77 ‰ to 12.60 ‰) values for calcite from the Jialu carbonatites generally deviate from the values observed in the primary carbonatite field, which may be a result of Rayleigh-type fractionation. LA–ICP–MS U–Pb dating shows the lower-intercept ages of 243.8±5 and 237.6±1.3 Ma for the monazite and xenotime, respectively, with the weighted average 206Pb/238U ages of 240.9±6 and 239.2±1.3 Ma. These results indicate that the Jialu REE deposit was concurrent with Triassic carbonatite magmatism and REE mineralization observed on the southern margin of the North China Craton. Abstract CO 2 mineralisation by industrial wastes is a promising option for mitigating carbon emissions safely and permanently with low material cost. But there is still absence of a detailed understanding on how fly ash properties affect the carbonation reactions. To fill this knowledge gap, five coal combustion fly ashes, Beijing (BJ), Wuhai (WH), Hazelwood (HW), Yallourn (YA) and Loy Yang (LY) ashes, from China and Australia were selected for carbonation studies. Experiments were performed in a batch reactor at 40 and 140 °C with 20 bar initial CO 2 pressure, 200 g/L solid to liquid ratio, 450 rpm stirring rate to compare the carbonation performance of the five fly ashes and the effect of fly ash properties on carbonation reactions. Then BJ, YA and HW ashes were then selected for further study in a wide temperature range (40–220 °C) because of their higher CO 2 sequestration capacity than the other two ashes. Quantitative X-ray diffractometry (XRD) with Rietveld refinement was used to characterize the crystalline and amorphous phases in fresh and carbonated fly ashes. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) were used to characterize morphological and elemental properties of fresh and carbonated fly ash samples. Compared to LY and WH ashes, BJ, YA and HW ashes displayed much higher CO 2 sequestration capacity due to the higher fraction of reactive Ca/Mg-bearing crystalline phases, including lime (CaO) and portlandite (Ca(OH) 2) in BJ ash, periclase (MgO) and srebrodolskite (Ca 2 Fe 2 O 5) in YA ash, and periclase and brucite (Mg(OH) 2) in HW ash. Compared to YA and WH ashes, BJ ash displayed faster kinetics of carbonation reactions because the reactant phases of BJ ash were mainly Ca-bearing phases which have higher reactivity with CO 2 than Mg-bearing phases. Also, particle size and morphological analyses indicated that the reacted particles displayed a lower porosity and pore area than the fresh sample due to the new precipitates not only depositing on the active surface, but also filling the pores of the fly ash particles, which was responsible for the reduced kinetics with time. The apatites coexisting with the stage I sulfides yield U-Pb isotopic ages of (1882–1857 Ma), corresponding to the regional metamorphism pervaded in the Paleoproterozoic in the Liaodong region. Zircons from a granite porphyry that is spatially associated with the stage-II mineralization have a U-Pb age of 228.5 ± 5.8 Ma. Stage-I fine-grained sulfides (Py1a and Sp1a) are of SEDEX origin and the fluid is fertile in metals such as Co, Ni, Zn, As, Mn and V. The metals are likely to be sourced from the Liaohe Group, which contains high concentration of those metals. Stage-I recrystallized sulfides (Py1b and Sp1b) show trace elements such as Co, Ni, Cu, As and Au of pyrite and the Cu, Cd, In, Ag, Sb of sphalerite were remobilized out from their crystal lattice under metamorphism. Stage-II sulfides (Py2 and Sp2) are more enriched in Au, As, Cu, Ag, Sb, Pb compared to stage-I sulfides. LA-ICP-MS mapping reveals multigenerational texture of Py2 which features a Cu and Zn enriched core (Py2a) and an overgrowth rim (Py2b) of enrichment in Au, As, Co and Ni. The compositionally distinct core and rim presumably suggest that two episodes of magmatic fluids are involved in the formation of stage-II sulfides. The sedimentary pyrite from Liaohe Group and the stage-I sulfides have δ34S value in the ranges of 10.4–17.04 ‰ and 4.10–9.37 ‰, respectively, suggesting that sulfur was probably derived from seawater sulfate reduction. The sulfur isotopes of stage-II sulfides (δ34S = 4.10–9.02 ‰) reflects a mixing of magmatic sulfur with sulfur leached from meta -volcanic-sedimentary source. This process was associated with the upward migration of magmatic hydrothermal fluids and subsequent fluid-rock interaction, which leached heavy sulfur isotopes along with Cu, Zn, Co, Ni, V metals from wall rocks of mica schist from the Dashiqiao and Gaixian Formations. Integrated mineral assemblage, sulfide texture, trace element and sulfur isotope signatures and geochronological constraints reveal the primary Paleoproterozoic SEDEX mineralization was intensively overprinted by later metamorphism and Mesozoic magmatic hydrothermal events for the Pb-Zn deposits in the Qingchengzi ore district.
