Earthworms modulate carbon and nitrogen cycling in terrestrial ecosystems, but their effect may be compromised by the deposition of pollutants from industrial emissions. However, studies investigating how deposited compounds affect the role of earthworms in carbon cycling such as litter decomposition are lacking, although the interactions of earthworms and deposited compounds are important for understanding the impact of pollutants on ecosystems and the potential of earthworms in bioremediation. We performed a 365‐day in situ litterbag decomposition experiment in a deciduous (Quercus variabilis) and coniferous (Pinus massoniana) forest in southeast China. We manipulated nitrogen (N), sodium (Na), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as model compounds during litter decomposition with and without earthworms (Eisenia fetida). After one year, N, Na, and PAH all slowed down litter mass loss, with the effects of Na being the strongest. By contrast, E. fetida generally increased litter mass loss, and the positive effects were uniformly maintained irrespective of the type of compounds added. However, the pathways to how earthworms increased litter mass loss varied among the compounds added and the two forests studied. As indicated by structural equation modeling, earthworms mitigated the negative effects of deposited compounds by directly increasing litter mass loss and indirectly increasing soil pH and microbial biomass. Overall, the results indicate that the acceleration of litter mass loss by earthworms is little affected by deposited compounds, and that earthworms have the potential to mitigate negative impacts of pollutants on litter decomposition and ecosystem processes. China's western Ordos is a distribution area for the extremely precious remnants of ancient Asian environments, which in endangered plant species and complex ecosystems. Accordingly, in this study, we collect three endangered plants belonging to the Zygophyllaceae family, namely Tetraena mongolica, Sarcozygium xanthoxylon, and Nitraria tangutorum Bobr. High-throughput sequencing technology was applied to study microbial diversity in these plant rhizosphere soils. Analysis of species composition abundance, Alpha diversity, Beta diversity and microbial structure are analyzed. 2428 bacterial OTUs and 1256 fungal OTUs are obtained from the rhizosphere soils, and the bacterial and fungal sequencing coverage is above 99%. Bacilli are the most abundant (86.91%) in the bacterial community. The fungal community has significant differences in three plants. The abundances of the genus Dothideomycetes in the rhizosphere soils of Tetraena mongolica and Sarcozygium xanthoxylon plants are the highest, which are 44.57% and 37.69%, respectively. Thus, Dothideomycetes is the dominant bacteria in the community. The genus Sordariomycetes in the rhizosphere soil is the dominant fungi with a relative abundance of 41.04%. Redundancy analysis revealed that microbial communities were closely related to environmental factors. Overall, this study bring new insights into the relationship between rhizosphere soils microbial diversity and environment to improving the adaptability of the endangered plants in survival environment. Hibiscus aridicola (Malvaceae) is an endangered ornamental shrub endemic to the dry-hot valleys of Jinsha River in southwest China. Only four natural populations of H. aridicola exist in the wild according to our field investigation. It can be inferred that H. aridicola is facing a very high risk of extinction in the wild and an urgent conservation strategy is required. By using a modified biotin-streptavidin capture method, a total of 40 microsatellite markers were developed and characterized in H. aridicola for the first time. Polymorphisms were evaluated in 39 individuals from four natural populations. Fifteen of the markers showed polymorphisms with two to six alleles per locus; the observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.19 to 0.72. These microsatellite loci would be useful tools for population genetics studies on H. aridicola and other con-generic species which are important to the conservation and development of endangered species. • Appropriate Na amendment facilitate leaf litter decomposition. • Na amendment increases similarity of microbial community in oak and pine forests. • Soil fauna show higher preference for Na-added litters. • Regardless of direction, Na amendment significantly decreased the strength of HFA. Sodium (Na) can affect ecosystem function by altering soil fauna and microbial community composition and abundance. Sodium's potential influences on plant-soil interactions, such as home-field advantage (HFA: enhanced decomposition in a home environment compared to an away environment), in relation to litter decomposition remains unclear. To fill this knowledge gap, we conducted a ten-month reciprocal litter transplant field experiment with Na amendments (0.005% and 0.5% water solution of NaCl) in both a subtropical broad-leaved forest dominated by Quercus variabilis (oak) and a coniferous artificial forest planted by Pinus massoniana (pine) in China. Litterbags with different mesh sizes were used to partition the impact of soil biota groups on the HFA. The results showed that 0.005% Na amendment facilitated litter decomposition as well as carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) mineralization by enhancing soil extracellular enzyme activity and soil faunal abundance. But 0.5% Na amendment inhibited litter decomposition in fine-mesh litterbags by decreasing microbial activity, and promoted litter decomposition in coarse-mesh litterbags by attracting more soil fauna. In the control plots, we observed a negative HFA in coarse-mesh litterbags (with most soil fauna and all soil microorganisms), and a positive HFA in fine-mesh litterbags (with complete exclusion of meso-and macrofauna). Whether the HFA was positive or negative (i.e. regardless of the direction of the HFA), Na amendments significantly decreased the magnitude of HFA by increasing the similarity of microbial community composition between the incubation fields ('home' vs. 'away') and decreasing selective foraging of soil fauna for different leaf litters. In sum, our results indicate that anthropogenic Na enrichment can decrease the effects of HFA through the modification of soil microbial and faunal communities, and thereby affect C sequestration and N cycling in subtropical forests. • Sequenced 21 complete chloroplast genomes from seven species. • Whole chloroplast genomes were available to authenticate 'Gusuibu'. • One specific DNA barcode was exploited to authenticate 'Gusuibu'. • Three sequence characterized amplified region markers were exploited. Ensuring the authenticity of raw materials used as herbs is a key step prior to producing medicines. "Gusuibu" is a traditional Chinese medicine for the treatment of bone diseases. Drynaria roosii Nakaike is the botanical origin of "Gusuibu". However, many "Gusuibu" adulterants which are morphologically similar, have been widely used in China. It is important to develop DNA-based markers to efficiently distinguish authentic "Gusuibu" from adulterants. In this study, 21 chloroplast genomes from seven species including D. roosii and six "Gusuibu" adulterant species were sequenced. The chloroplast genomes of D. roosii , D. sinica Diels, D. bonii Christ, D. delavayi Christ, D. quercifolia (L.) J. Sm., D. propinqua (Wall.) J. Sm., and Pseudodrynaria coronans (Wall.) Ching were 154,181 bp, 151,711 bp, 151,542 bp, 151,709 bp, 151,570 bp, 152,442 bp, and 151,466 bp in length, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that whole chloroplast genomes could be used to distinguish D. roosii from adulterants and between each adulterant. Comparing chloroplast genome sequences, 12 protein-coding genes and eight intergenic sequences with high divergence in chloroplast genomes were identified to exploit specific DNA barcodes and sequence characterized amplified region (SCAR) markers. One specific DNA barcode and three SCAR markers, which were available to distinguish D. roosii from adulterants, were developed and four primer pairs were designed. The primer pairs for amplification of DNA barcode and SCAR markers designed in this study will be useful for economically and effectively distinguishing D. roosii from adulterants, and for guaranteeing the quality, safety, and effectiveness of "Gusuibu" herbs. Lhasa is located on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, with an altitude of 3,650 m, and a unique geography. Its climate is dry and cold all year round. Forensic entomological studies of the region are scarce. In this study, the diversity and seasonality of necrophagous flies in eight counties among Lhasa region were determined, and succession of necrophagous flies colonizing on rabbits in the Chengguan area of Lhasa was studied, so as to provide reference data for estimating postmortem interval (PMI) and location of death. In total, 22 species of necrophagous flies, belonging to six families were identified in Lhasa. Protophormia terraenovae (Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) was the dominant species throughout the year, the diversity index (4.5834) indicated that the study on necrophagous flies in the Lhasa region is representative., (© The Author(s) 2021. Twenty-one microsatellite markers from the genome of Cardiocrinum giganteum var. yunnanense, an important economic plant in China, were developed with a fast isolation protocol by amplified fragment length polymorphism of sequences containing repeats (FIASCO). Polymorphism within each locus was assessed in 24 wild individuals from Gaoligong Mountains in western Yunnan Province, China. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 2 to 4 with a mean of 2.9. The expected and observed levels of heterozygosity ranged from 0.042 to 0.726 and from 0.000 to 1.000, with averages of 0.44 and 0.31, respectively. These polymorphic microsatellite markers should prove useful in population genetics studies and assessments of genetic variation to develop conservation and management strategies for this species.
