Previous studies have reported contradictory relationships between social class and prosocial behaviour. Some studies have found that higher class individuals are more likely to exhibit prosocial behaviour than lower class individuals; whereas in others the opposite was observed. In view of this difference, this study proposed and tested the moderating role of perception of class mobility. Studies 1 and 2, using different operational definitions, revealed that the interaction effect between social class and perceived class mobility on prosocial behaviour was significant. Under the condition of lower perception of class mobility, lower class individuals showed less prosocial behaviour than higher class individuals. When perception of class mobility was higher, however, the prosocial behaviour of lower class individuals increased, showing no significant difference between lower and higher class individuals. Study 3 further explored why perception of class mobility might influence lower class individuals' prosocial behaviour and supported a mediating role of system‐justifying belief. Estuaries are one of the most important coastal ecosystems. While microbiomes and viromes have been separately investigated in some estuaries, few studies holistically deciphered the genomes and connections of viruses and their microbial hosts along an estuarine salinity gradient. Here we applied deep metagenomic sequencing on microbial and viral communities in surface waters of the Pearl River estuary, one of China's largest estuaries with strong anthropogenic impacts. Overall, 1,205 non-redundant prokaryotic genomes with ≥50% completeness and ≤10% contamination, and 78,502 non-redundant viral-like genomes were generated from samples of three size fractions and five salinity levels. Phylogenomic analysis and taxonomy classification show that majority of these estuarine prokaryotic and viral genomes are novel at species level according to public databases. Potential connections between the microbial and viral populations were further investigated by host-virus matching. These combined microbial and viral genomes provide an important complement of global marine genome datasets and should greatly facilitate our understanding of microbe-virus interactions, evolution and their implications in estuarine ecosystems. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) provides carbon substrates and energy sources for sediment microbes driving benthic biogeochemical processes. The interactions between microbes and DOM are dynamic and complex and require the understanding based on fine-scale microbial community and physicochemical profiling. In this study, we characterized the porewater DOM composition in a 300-cm sediment core from the Pearl River estuary, China, and examined the interactions between DOM and archaeal and bacterial communities. DOM composition were highly stratified and associated with changing microbial communities. Compared to bacteria, the amplicon sequence variants of archaea showed significant Pearson correlations (r ≥ 0.65, P < 0.01) with DOM molecules of low H/C ratios, high C number and double bond equivalents, indicating that the distribution of archaea was closely correlated to recalcitrant DOM while bacteria were associated with relatively labile compounds. This was supported by the presence of auxiliary enzyme families essential for lignin degradation and bcrABCD, UbiX genes for anaerobic aromatic reduction in metagenome-assembled genomes of Bathyarchaeia. Our study demonstrates that niche differentiation between benthic bacteria and archaea may have important consequences in carbon metabolism, particularly for the transformation of recalcitrant organic carbon that may be predominant in aged marine sediments. Sense of entitlement can be defined as a pervasive sense that one deserves more and is entitled to more than others. Two studies examined the relationship between social class and sense of entitlement and how this relationship is moderated by system-justifying belief (SJB) in China. In Study 1, we conducted a survey among adults (N = 669) with results showing that social class was positively correlated with sense of entitlement for those endorsing SJB, but negatively correlated with sense of entitlement for those opposing SJB. In Study 2, we conducted an experiment among undergraduates (N = 128) with both social class and SJB being primed and the results replicated the pattern: the positive effect of primed higher social class on pay entitlement existed only for those primed with high SJB, and was dampened for those primed with low SJB. Therefore, higher-class individuals do not necessarily feel more entitled, and SJB may play an important role in shaping their sense of entitlement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Three hundred and thirty-seven isolates ofSalmonellaPullorum from eastern China between 1962 and 2010 were characterized for antimicrobial susceptibility (disk diffusion method), the presence of integrons (polymerase chain reaction followed by sequencing) and the ability to form biofilms (semi-quantitative adherence assay). Two hundred and fifty-eight isolates (76.6%) exhibited multiple drug resistance (MDR; resistant to at least three different classes of antimicrobials), and the level of drug resistance is increasing with time. There were three isolates (9.4%) exhibiting MDR from 1962 to 1968. MDR rates began to increase for isolates between 1970 to 1979 and 1980 to 1987 (64.6 to 78.7%). The MDR rates reached 96.6% for isolates between 1990 and 2010. Polymerase chain reaction screening for integrons showed that 75 isolates (22.3%) were positive for class 1 integrons while none were positive for class 2 integrons. All of the class 1 integron-positive isolates exhibited MDR and were more frequently resistant than the negative isolates. Two hundred and twenty isolates (65.3%) had the ability to form biofilms, and bacterial resistance levels to cefamandole, trimethoprim and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole were significantly higher for biofilm-positive groups than the biofilm-negative groups. Our data show that multidrug resistance is common amongS.Pullorum isolated from eastern China, being more frequent after 1990 than before 1990, and the presence of class 1 integrons is associated with multidrug resistance. • Viral production varies by 20-fold in Chinese estuaries with significant seasonality. • Viral population size peaks at mid-latitude in global estuarine ecosystems. • Viral activity increases towards the equator in global estuaries. • More than half of bacterioplankton are killed by viruses each day in global estuaries. Estuaries are important ecosystems providing irreplaceable services for humankind and, in turn, are extensively influenced by human activities and climate changes. Microbial processes, which are largely controlled by viruses, are always responsible for the ecological function and environmental problems in estuaries. However, we know little about the ecology and importance of viruses in estuarine systems. Here, we investigated viral ecological dynamics in estuarine systems on local (four largest estuaries in China in different seasons) and global scales. Viral production varied by almost 20-fold in Chinese estuaries with significant seasonality, being responsible for the removal of 1.41%–21.45% of the bacterioplankton standing stock each day, and contributed directly to the organic carbon pool by releasing an average of 3.57 µg of cellular carbon per liter per day. By compiling data from 21 estuaries across the world, we found for the first time that viral population size peaked at mid-latitude and viral production increased towards the equator in estuarine ecosystems. The results indicated the higher viral impact on microbial mortality and dissolved organic matter cycling in tropical estuaries. Our field investigation and global synthesized analysis provide compelling evidence of spatiotemporal variations in estuarine viral dynamics. The global view of viral impacts on estuarine microbial mortality offers important insight for incorporating viruses into ecological models and understanding the environmental implications of the tropicalization of temperate aquatic ecosystems under a scenario of climate warming. Background: Physicians need an appropriate embryo transfer strategy to address the challenge of reducing multiple birth rates, while maintaining the couples' live birth rate during assisted reproductive technology., Methods: We included 10,060 frozen embryo transfer cycles from January 2015 to March 2020 in reproductive medical center of Ruijin hospital, Shanghai, China. Patients were grouped according to the number and grade of cleavage-stage embryo or blastocysts transferred. Live birth rate and multiple live birth rate were compared among groups of women of different ages. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to estimate the risk of multiple live birth using different combinations of transferred embryos., Results: The transfer of double good-quality embryos was an independent predictor for multiple birth in women aged <30 years and those aged 36-39 years [<30 years: aOR =1.54 (95% CI: 1.14-2.06, P < 0.01); 36-39 years: aOR =1.84 (95% CI: 1.0-3.4, P < 0.01)]. Further, for women aged <36 years, the transfer of good-quality + poor-quality blastocysts was an independent predictor for multiple birth rate [<30 years: aOR=2.46 (95% CI: 1.45-4.18, P < 0.01); 31-35 years: aOR =4.45 (95% CI: 1.97-10.06, P < 0.01)]., Conclusions: Single-good-quality blastocyst transfer is recommended for women of all ages. When good-quality cleavage embryos are available, the choice of single or double embryo transfer with good- or average-quality embryo should depend on the age of women. Salmonella spp. pose a threat to both human and animal health, with more than 2600 serovars having been reported to date. Salmonella serovars are usually identified by slide agglutination tests, which are labor intensive and time consuming. In an attempt to develop a more rapid screening method for the major poultry Salmonella serovars, we developed a loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay, which directly detected the sefA gene, a fimbrial operon gene existing in several specific serovars of Salmonella enterica including the major poultry serovars, namely Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis (Salmonella Enteritidis) and Salmonella enterica serovar Gallinarum (Salmonella Gallinarum). With the 177 bacterial strains we tested, positive reactions were only observed with 85 strains of serovar Salmonella Enteritidis and Salmonella Gallinarum. The detection limit of the LAMP assay was 4 CFU/reaction with genomic DNAs of Salmonella Enteritidis (ATCC 13076) from pure culture and 400 CFU/ reaction with DNA extracted from spiked chicken feces. The LAMP assay was more sensitive than conventional culture, especially without enrichment, in detecting Salmonella Enteritidis (CMCC 50041) in the spiked fecal samples. The results show the sefA LAMP method is a rapid, sensitive, specific, and practical method for directly detection of Salmonella Enteritidis and Salmonella Gallinarum in chickens. The sefA LAMP assay can potentially serve as new on-site diagnostics in the poultry industry.

In this study, a total of 323 Salmonella enterica strains were isolated from 3,566 rectal swab samples of 51 poultry farms in seven regions of 12 provinces of China between 2006 and 2012. The prevalences of Salmonella sp. carriage were 12.4% in geese (66 positive/533 samples), 10.4% in turkeys (32/309), 9.8% in chickens (167/1,706), 6.8% in ducks (41/601), and 4.1% in pigeons (17/417), respectively. These isolates belonged to 20 serovars, in which the most frequent serovars were S. enterica serovar Gallinarum biovar Pullorum (herein, S. Pullorum) (55 isolates, 17.0%), S. enterica serovar Typhimurium (50 isolates, 15.5%), and S. enterica serovar Enteritidis (39 isolates, 12.1%). Overall, S. Typhimurium was the most commonly detected serovar; among the individual species, S. Pullorum was most commonly isolated from chickens, S. Enteritidis was most common in ducks, S. Typhimurium was most common in geese and pigeons, and S. enterica serovar Saintpaul was most common in turkeys. PCR determination of 20 fimbrial genes demonstrated the presence of bcfD, csgA, fimA, stdB, and sthE genes and the absence of staA and stgA genes in these isolates, and other loci were variably distributed, with frequency values ranging from 11.8 to 99.1%. These 323 Salmonella isolates were subdivided into 41 different fimbrial genotypes, and of these isolate, 285 strains (88.2%) had 12 to 14 fimbrial genes. Our findings indicated that the Salmonella isolates from different poultry species were phenotypically and genetically diverse and that some fimbrial genes are more frequently associated with serovars or serogroups.
