The Diaoyu Islands are a group of uninhabited islets located in the East China Sea between Japan, China, and Taiwan. Here, four mainstream gauge-adjusted multisatellite precipitation estimates [TRMM Multisatellite Precipitation Analysis, version 7 (TMPA-V7); CPC morphing technique-bias-corrected product (CMORPH-CRT); Precipitation Estimation from Remotely Sensed Information Using Artificial Neural Networks-Climate Data Record (PERSIANN-CDR); and Global Satellite Mapping of Precipitation-gauge adjusted (GSMaP_Gauge)] are adopted to detect the rainfall characteristics of the Diaoyu Islands area with a particular focus on typhoon contribution. Out of the four products, CMORPH-CRT and GSMaP_Gauge show much more similarity both in terms of the spatial patterns and error structures because of their use of the same morphing technique. Overall, GSMaP_Gauge performs better than the other three products, likely because of denser in situ observations integrated in its retrieval algorithms over East Asia. All rainfall products indicate that an apparent rain belt exists along the northeastern 45° direction of Taiwan extending to Kyushu of Japan, which is physically associated with the Kuroshio. The Diaoyu Islands are located on the central axis of this rain belt. During the period 2001-09, typhoon-induced rainfall accounted for 530 mm yr−1, and typhoons contributed on average approximately 30% of the annual precipitation budget over the Diaoyu Islands. Higher typhoon contribution was found over the southern warmer water of the Diaoyu Islands, while the northern cooler water presented less contribution ratio. Supertyphoon Chaba, the largest typhoon of 2004, recorded 53 h of rainfall accumulation totaling 235 mm on the Diaoyu Islands, and this event caused severe property damage and human casualties for Japan. Carbon storage in forest vegetation of Fujian Province plays a significant role in the terrestrial carbon budget in China. The purposes of this study are: (1) to evaluate how the afforestation and reforestation programs established in Fujian Province influence carbon storage in forest ecosystems; (2) to assess the influence of tree species, forest age and ownership changes on vegetation carbon storage; and (3) to explore strategies for increasing vegetation carbon potentials. Data from seven Chinese Forest Resource Inventories and 5,059 separate sample plots collected between 1978 and 2008 were used to estimate vegetation carbon storage in the whole province. In addition, uncertainty analysis was conducted to provide the range of our estimations. Total forest vegetation carbon storage increased from 136.51 in 1978 to 229.31 Tg C in 2008, and the forest area increased from 855.27 × 10 to 1,148.66 × 10 ha, showing that the Fujian forests have a net vegetation carbon increase of 96.72 Tg C with an annual increase of 4.84 Tg C over the study period. Carbon storage varied with dominant forest species, forest age and forest ownership, suggesting that increases in vegetation carbon potentials can be achieved through selection of forest species and management of age structures. Implementation of afforestation and reforestation programs in Fujian Province over the past three decades has made a significant contribution to forest carbon storage. Abstract: Rapid growth of the Chinese urban population and the expansion of urban areas have led to changes in urban forest structure and composition, and consequently changes in vegetation carbon storage. The purpose of this study is to quantify the effects of urbanization on vegetation carbon storage in Xiamen, a city located in southern China. Data used for this study were collected from 39,723 sample plots managed according to the forest management planning inventory program. Data from these plots were collected in 4 non-consecutive years: 1972, 1988, 1996 and 2006. The study area was divided into three zones, which were defined according to their level of urbanization: the urban core, the suburban zone, and the exurban zone. Total vegetation carbon storage and the vegetation carbon density for each study period were calculated for each zone. Our results show that urban vegetation carbon storage has increased by 865,589.71t during the period from 1972 to 2006 (34 years) in Xiamen, with a rapid increase between 1972 and 1996, then relatively little change between 1996 and 2006. The increase in vegetation carbon storage is mainly due to the large percentages of the suburban and exurban areas which exist in Xiamen city, and the implementation of reforestation programs in these two zones. The percentage of total regional carbon storage in the city center (urban core), suburbs and exurbs was 5%, 23% and 72%, respectively. This demonstrates that the exurbs store the majority of vegetation carbon, and thus play a critical role in the vegetation carbon storage of the study area. The intensification of urbanization in the future will likely expand the urban core and reduce the area of the suburbs and exurbs, and thus potentially decrease total vegetation carbon storage.
