Plants belonging to the Oxytropis genus, family Leguminosae, are found throughout the world, with about 80 species mainly distributed in northwest and northeast China. The plants have medicinal properties and many plants have been used as folk medicine for the treatment of colds, inflammation of carbuncle swelling, pain, and different types of bleeding. In recent years, due to the reduced availability of wild resources and increased clinical demand, additionalOxytropis species have been used inMongolianmedicine. This study explored the medicinal potential of four Oxytropis species, investigating their phylogeny, chemical components, and pharmacological activities. Oxytropis myriophylla (Pall) DC., Oxytropis hirta Bunge, and Oxytropis bicolor Bge. were found to be closely related at the taxonomic level. While previous investigations on the bioactive constituents of Oxytropis have been limited and have concentrated largely on flavonoids and saponins, the present study established a novel UHPLC-Q-TOF/MS based on metabolite profiling to comprehensively analyze the chemical composition of the four Oxytropis species and to identify marker compounds. A total of 75 compounds were identified from the four species, with 23 identified as characteristic marker components. Twenty-six marker compounds were identified in O. myriophylla from different geographical regions. Analysis of pharmacological activity showed that extracts of O. myriophylla and O. hirta had stronger anti-inflammatory activity than the extracts from the other species. The relationships between the chemical components, traditional curative uses, and pharmacological activities were analyzed to provide a preliminary documentation of the pharmacophylogenetic characteristics of the Oxytropis family as a whole. Several marker compounds, including licoricesaponin G2, licoricesaponin J2, and glycyrrhizic acid found in O. hirta were found to have effective anti-inflammatory activity, consistent with the traditional application of reducing swelling and healing wounds. This preliminary investigation into the pharmacophylogeny of the genus Oxytropis will contribute to the conservation and exploitation of the medicinal resources of this genus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The PRISMA statement was rarely used in the field of acupuncture, possibly because of knowledge gaps and the lack of items tailored for characteristics of acupuncture. And with an increasing number of systematic reviews in acupuncture, it is necessary to develop an extension of PRISMA for acupuncture. And this study was the first step of our project, of which the aim was to investigate the need for information of clinical evidence on acupuncture from the perspectives of evidence users. Methods: We designed a questionnaire based on a pilot survey and a literature review of acupuncture systematic review or meta-analysis(SR/MA). Participants from five cities (Lanzhou, Chengdu, Shanghai, Nanjing and Beijing) representing the different regions of China, including clinicians, researchers and postgraduates in their second year of Master studies or higher level, were surveyed. Results: A total of 269 questionnaires were collected in 18 hospitals, medical universities and research agencies, and 251 (93 %) with complete data were used for analysis. The average age of respondents was 33 years (SD 8.959, range 25-58) with male 43 % and female 57 %. Most respondents had less than 5 years of working experience on acupuncture, and read only one to five articles per month. Electronic databases, search engines and academic conferences were the most common sources for obtaining information. Fifty-six percent of the respondents expressed low satisfaction of the completeness of information from the literature. The eight items proposed for acupuncture SR/MAs received all high scores, and five of the items scored higher than eight on a scale zero to ten. The differences for the scores of most items between postgraduates and non-postgraduates were not statistically significant. Conclusions: The majority of the respondents were not very satisfied with the information provided in acupuncture SRs. Most of the items proposed in this questionnaire received high scores, and opinions from postgraduates and non-postgraduates tended to agree on most items. Objective: To examine the interaction between salt-intake and helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection in the development of stomach cancer in an ecological study of 67 Chinese rural counties. Methods: Stomach cancer mortality data of 67 counties were derived from a national survey conducted in China between 1986 and 1988. Information regarding the prevalence of H. pylori infection and urinary sodium excretion were collected from the same individuals during a subsequent dietary survey in 1989. Results: In these 67 counties, H. pylori prevalence and urinary sodium were correlated with stomach cancer mortality, with r=0.31 (p=0.01) and r=0.28 (p=0.03), respectively. After stratification, the significant correlation between H. pylori prevalence and stomach cancer mortality only existed in counties with high levels (≥5.0 mg/mg creatinine/12-hour) of urinary sodium (r=0.5; p=0.002). Similarly, the significant correlation between urinary sodium and stomach cancer mortality was only presented in counties with high (≥71.6%) H. pylori prevalence (r=0.4; p=0.017). Multivariate regression analysis showed results consistent with the correlation analysis. Conclusion: These findings suggest that there may be an interaction between high salt consumption and H .pylori infection in the development of stomach cancer. The objective of this study was to evaluate the validity of a Xi'an food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) designed for application in an international case-control colorectal cancer study. The FFQ was administered to 125 participants twice over 1-year interval. Four 24-hour dietary recalls (24-HDRs) were conducted with the same participants in each season of the year. Comparative validation was assessed by comparing the nutrient intakes derived from the 24-HDRs and the FFQ-2, and reproducibility was estimated by comparing the nutrient intakes from two FFQs. In the validation study, the mean deattenuated correlation coefficients for nutrients between the 24-HDRs and the FFQ-2 ranged from 0.35 to 0.84 in the males. The female results were slightly lower than the male's. The mean percentage of classification into the same quartile was 38% for the males and 35% for the females. In the reproducibility study, the mean crude correlation coefficients between the two FFQs were from 0.41 to 0.68 in the males and from 0.36 to 0.66 in the females. The newly developed Xi'an FFQ appears to be reasonably valid and reliable for most nutrients but would benefit from the addition of nutritional supplements and seasonings for assessing dietary intake in older persons in Xi'an, China. The Tibetan population, long a resident on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, has lower hemoglobin concentrations than Han Chinese migrants, but it is incompletely known how gender affects the hemoglobin concentrations in the two populations at various altitudes. Measurements of hemoglobin concentration were obtained in 5,887 healthy male and female Tibetan and Han residents aged 5–60 yr, at altitudes of 2,664, 3,813, 4,525, and 5,200 m. Multiple regression equations showed the n-coefficients for altitude and for age were higher (P < 0.05) in Han men than in Tibetan men and in Han women than in Tibetan women. Analysis indicated a significant three-way interaction between altitude, gender, and ethnicity (X2 = 3.72, P = 0.05). With increasing altitude, men progressively had more hemoglobin than women in the Han, but not the Tibetan, population. Above 2,664 m, this gender-related difference in hemoglobin concentration increased from childhood to young adulthood more in Han than in Tibetans. We suggest that the Han-Tibetan ethnic difference in the effect of altitude on hemoglobin concentration depends to a large extent on gender. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
