The Loess Plateau has long been considered as a very fragile area that suffers from serious water erosion. With the onset of global climate fluctuations and regional implementation of soil and water conservation measures, it is of great significance to effectively reveal the variations in soil erosion risk and its driving mechanism on the Loess Plateau. Taking the Yanwachuan watershed as a case study and using rainfall, soil, digital elevation model (DEM) and land‐use data, this study applied the Revised Universal Soil loss Equation (RUSLE) model with geographic information system (GIS) technology to analyse the temporal and spatial variations of soil erosion risk and to evaluate the effects of land‐use change and climate change on soil erosion from 1981 to 2016. Future soil erosion risk was also assessed under different land‐use and climate‐change scenarios. Results showed that annual soil loss in the Yanwachuan watershed presented a significant decreasing trend with a rate of 47.928 t km−2 a−1 and that average annual soil loss was 3,543.7 t km−2 from 1981 to 2016. However, some areas, even with good vegetation cover, still had a rather high soil erosion risk (exceeding the severe erosion rate of 5,000 t km−2 in 2000–2016) if located in hilly and gully slope regions. Land‐use change and climate variation contributed 37.2% and 62.8%, respectively, to reducing soil erosion, showing that climate variation played a leading role in current soil‐erosion reduction. In addition, the average soil losses in the 2020s, 2030s and 2040s under different scenarios are predicted to increase by 8.6–42.6% compared with the average soil loss (2,993.8 t km−2) in 2001–2016. Future climate change may be the main driving factor in enhancing the risk of soil erosion. Hence, there is an urgent need to strengthen soil and water conservation research and management in future years. Purpose: China harbors 56 ethnic groups and Han accounts for >92% of the total Chinese population. We investigated the frequencies of 15 autosomal short tandem repeat (STR) loci in the Han population of the Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture with the aim of expanding the available population information in human genetics databases and for forensic DNA analysis. Subjects and Methods: We explored the genetic characteristics of 15 autosomal STR loci in 552 unrelated Chinese Han individuals from Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture, Northwestern China using the AmpFISTR Identifiler PCR Amplification Kit. Moreover, phylogenetic analysis was performed between the Han population and other relevant populations based on the autosomal STR genotyping. The neighbor‐joining tree and principle component analysis were generated based on the Nei's standard genetic distance and allelic frequencies, respectively. Results: A total of 171 alleles were observed among 552 unrelated individuals and allelic frequencies ranged from 0.5145 to 0.0009. The combined power of discrimination and combined power of exclusion of the 15 autosomal STR loci were 0.9999999999999999964 and 0.999998243616671, respectively. Conclusions: Population comparison revealed that the Ili Han population were lining up together with other Han populations in China while showing significant differences from other Chinese and worldwide populations. Compaction is an important part of diagenesis affecting porosity in conjunction with burial depth and time. However, the relation between initial porosity and sandstone compaction remains unclear. This paper aims to clarify the effect of initial porosity on the compaction of consolidated sandstone in the microdeformation stage via experiments, mathematical modeling, and statistical analyses. According to the physical experiments in the Ordos Basin, sandstone porosity decreases with increasing overburden load, and the porosity-decrease trends of two similar samples with different initial porosities converge gradually. Based on the Bingham visco-elasto-plastic stress–strain model, a theoretical model for the vertical uniaxial compaction of consolidated porous rocks was constructed. The equivalent viscosity coefficient (EVC) of consolidated sandstones was approximately estimated by a contrastive analysis and an iterative computation on the basis of the geologic statistical model proposed in this study. The results in Hangjin Qi show that the Young’s modulus and the EVC of low-porosity compaction trend (LPCT) are exponential and power-law functions of the corresponding porosity, respectively. The derivation of theoretical model indicates that the compressibility and the initial porosity of porous sandstone during microdeformation are positively correlated, in accordance with simulation experiments. The initial porosity affects the elastic modulus and the viscosity coefficient and consequently, the sandstone compaction during microdeformation stage. Such an effect can contribute to the improvements of both the compaction degree analyses of different burial processes in sandstone porosity evolution and reservoir quality evaluation. Considering the complex factors controlling volcanic reservoirs, the Carboniferous strata in the eastern slope area of the Mahu Sag (ESMS) in the northwestern Junggar Basin (NJB) were investigated using rock cores, thin sections, scanning electron microscope (SEM), physical properties, major elements, X-ray fluorescence (XRF), well logging, and seismic data. The volcanic rocks revealed by drilling are mostly weathering crust reservoirs (WCRs), the formation of which in and around the study area is significantly controlled by weathering and leaching (WL). Most types of volcanic rock can be improved by long-term weathering. Favorable reservoirs in the ESMS are often developed within 150 m below the tectonic unconformity boundary at the top of the Carboniferous. The longer the weathering duration, the better are the overall quality of the WCRs. Weathering duration of about 40 Ma is probably an important threshold in the NJB. Ultra-long leaching of atmospheric water and strong late dissolution of acidic fluids before oil and gas accumulations are important for reservoir development and petroleum accumulation in volcanic strata filled with authigenic minerals, especially calcite. The early regional tectonic movement affected the volcanic eruption and controlled the lithofacies distribution. The linear density of fractures was negatively correlated with the distance from the main controlling fault. Owing to the relatively weak filling, high-angle fractures contribute significantly to the reservoir permeability. The physical properties of volcanic breccia are better than those of tuff, and the porosity, permeability, and fracture density of andesite are higher than those of basalt. The physical properties of near-source facies belts of a volcanic edifice are better than those of far-source facies ones. Favorable exploration areas are the structural highs and fault zones where the duration of WL is more than 40 Ma, explosive facies and effusive facies near the crater are developed, or the inherited ancient buried hills transformed by faults and fractures near excellent source rocks, where the dissolution of atmospheric water and organic acidic fluids are strong. • Weathering duration controls degree of weathering, affects volcanic reservoir quality. • Most of favorable reservoirs developed within 150 m below tectonic unconformity. • Weathering duration of ∼40 Ma is probably an important threshold in NW Junggar Basin. • Coupling relationship between weathering-leaching and calcite filling plays a key role. Purpose: This study investigated the allelic frequency of 4 short terminal repeats (STRs) in Han and She populations from eastern China. Methods: DNA samples from Han (N = 110) and She (N = 110) healthy subjects were amplified using PCR and primers specific for the STRs. D21S11 and D21S1446 (chromosome 21) and D18S865 and D18S535 (chromosome 18). The frequency and homozygocity of different STRs were evaluated. Results: For both populations, D21S11 and D18S535 were more polymorphic than D21S1446 and D18S865, and the D21S1446 1 allele was very common (48.6% and 55.0% for the Han and She groups, respectively).The Han and She groups significantly differed from one another in respect to the distribution of D21S11, D18S865, and D18S535 allelic frequency (all P -values ≤ 0.48) but had a similar allelic distribution for D21S1446 ( P = 0.106). D21S1446 was found to be homozygous about 50% of the time which was significantly greater compared to the other STRs analyzed. Conclusion: This study found that the Han and She differ genetically at 3 autosomal STRs located on chromosome 18 and 21. Aims: Although the influences of coastal embankments on soil physicochemical properties and carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycling have been widely reported, the mechanisms of their effects on soil microbial ecologies remain poorly understood. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the variations in the diversity and composition of soil bacterial and archaeal communities between natural and embanked saltmarshes, as well as the determinants that drive these variations. Methods: 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis was performed to assess the impacts of coastal embankments on the bacterial and archaeal communities of native Suaeda salsa, Phragmites australis, and invasive Spartina alterniflora saltmarshes on the east coast of China. Results: Embankments were found to significantly decrease the microbial diversity of S. alterniflora salt marsh, while increased the OTU richness of P. australis salt marsh. Embankments modified the compositions of soil bacterial and archaeal communities in both S. alterniflora and P. australis salt marshes. However, variations in the microbial diversity, richness, and community compositions between the native and embanked S. salsa salt marshes were insignificant. Conclusions: These results were possibly because the embankment significantly altered soil nutrient substrate levels (e.g., soil organic C and N) by variations in plant residues and soil physiochemical properties in S. alterniflora and P. australis saltmarshes, whereas the embankment had no observable changes in the soil nutrient substrate and plant residue in S. salsa saltmarsh. The impacts of coastal embankments on nitrogen (N) dynamics are of great importance in salt marshes. However, effects of embankments on seasonal N dynamics in the plant-soil systems of Suaeda salsa salt marshes are still not well understood. Therefore, the edaphic moisture and salinity, biomass, N concentrations and storage in different plant tissues; the extent of organic and inorganic N subpools in soil subsystems; as well as N immobilization and mineralization by microorganisms in embanked and neighboring natural S. salsa salt marshes through all four seasons were investigated in Yancheng, Eastern China. Our results revealed that embankments increased the biomass and N storage of dead tissues (e.g., litter), while they decreased the biomass and N storage of live tissues (e.g., living aboveground tissues and roots) of S. salsa through decreased edaphic moisture and salinity. Furthermore, under the influence of embankments edaphic water-dissolvable N, e.g.,edaphic dissolved organic N (EDON) and nitrate and nitrite N (TNN), significantly increased with higher N inputs from S. salsa litter. This water-dissolvable N was an important source of N for plants, which translated to higher N concentrations in live plant tissues. However, this excess absorbed N appeared not to facilitate the growth of plants, which would ultimately return to the soil from plant residues. Our results suggested that the decreased edaphic soil moisture and salinity due to embankments had negative impacts on the biomass and N storage of S. salsa plant tissues, which were likely due to shifts in the edaphic osmotic potential. Subsequently, a cascading butterfly effect may be initiated due to the impaired growth of S. salsa , to which more attention should be paid. Porosity evolution and reservoir quality are strongly affected by mechanical compaction. However, the compaction-induced porosity reduction process in sandstone reservoirs during the postaccumulation period and its effect on gas saturation remain poorly understood. By studying the sandstones in the Bayan'aobao area, we were able to quantify the porosity evolution and gas saturation variations caused by mechanical compaction during the postaccumulation period through fluid inclusion analysis and mathematical modeling. Moreover, we verified our findings by compaction experiments and geological statistics. Fluid inclusion microthermometry was employed to determine the hydrocarbon accumulation periods, and the highest homogenization temperature of the two-phase aqueous fluid inclusions coexisting with natural gas fluid inclusions, i.e., ~115 °C (with a corresponding geological age of ~140 Ma), was regarded as the beginning of the postaccumulation stages. With these data, we constructed an inversion evolution model (based on the geologic statistical model of sandstone mechanical compaction) for the postaccumulation period and determined the gas saturation changes (based on compaction porosity evolution). The modeling results indicate that the sandstone porosity decreased greatly during postaccumulation subsidence and increased slightly during late-stage uplift, while the gas saturation increased with both the porosity decrease during the postaccumulation subsidence and the porosity increases during the later uplift. The modeling results of subsidence are concordant with the compaction experiments, which also show that the larger the initial porosity, the greater the porosity reduction. The uplift modeling results demonstrate that an erosion-induced decrease in burial depth allowed the sandstone porosity to increase, which is supported by some scholars' findings (e.g., Neuzil and Pollock, 1983; Jiang et al., 2004; Zhang, 2013) and by the positive correlation between sandstone porosities and restored geologic unit thicknesses in the study area. However, the inversion modeling indicates that the reason for the porosity rebound in litharenites is that the increase in elastic porosity slightly exceeds the decrease in viscoplastic porosity, which would have been different if the uplift-induced erosion rate had been distinctly lower. Gas production test data and restored geologic unit thicknesses indicate that uplift and erosion may be able to enrich sandstone gas reservoirs to a certain extent, consistent with the calculated gas saturation variation results, but a full understanding of gas saturation evolution awaits further studies. Forest litter layer plays an important role in controlling water and soil loss; however, few studies have examined how litter cover affects hydrological processes. In this research, the effects of forest litter cover on interception, runoff, infiltration and soil erosion were investigated using rainfall simulation on a loess hillslope in China. Field experimental plots (10 m × 1.5 m, 5°) with two litter species (needle-leaf species and broad-leaf species) and three litter masses (300, 500 and 800 g m−2) were exposed to two rainfall intensities (30 and 60 mm h−1) for 40 min. A modified Merriam interception model as well as a WEPP (Water Erosion Prediction Project) Hillslope model were subsequently employed to analyze the experimental data of litter interception as well as runoff generation and soil erosion, respectively. Results showed that litter interception storage capacity ranged from 0.55 to 2.10 mm; thus, 1.8–9.2% of total rainfall was intercepted by the litter layer. Interception storage increased with increasing litter mass and rainfall intensity, and broad-leaf litter could intercept more rainwater than needle-leaf litter. Litter cover reduced runoff rates from plots covered with needle-leaf and broad-leaf litter by 18.6% and 25.9%, respectively, compared to the bare plot. Although runoff rates were slightly lower in litter-covered plots than in the bare plot, soil loss was effectively controlled when litter mass levels reached a threshold value of 500 g m−2. Compared to that from the bare plot, the mean soil loss rate for litter-covered plots was lowered by 58.5%, 74.5% and 78.3% for litter masses of 300, 500 and 800 g m−2, respectively. These results indicate that the litter layer was more conducive to controlling soil loss than runoff generation. Furthermore, the determination coefficient and Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency coefficient of the modified Merriam model ranged between 0.838–0.998 and 0.912–0.998, respectively, indicating that this model could successfully simulate the litter interception process. The WEPP model predictions also agreed well with the measured runoff and soil loss rates, but may have under-estimated the measured data in low rainfall intensity events and over-estimated the measured data in high rainfall intensity events. The performance of the WEPP model could be obviously improved by reducing the effective hydraulic conductivity and soil erodibility. Aims: Soil fungal communities play a critical role in ecosystem carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycling. Although the effect of plant invasions on ecosystem C and N cycling is well established, its impact on soil fungal communities is not fully understood. The objective of this study was therefore to understand the variations in soil fungal communities as affected by plant invasion, and the mechanisms that drive these changes. Methods: We examined the impacts of invasive Spartina alternifolia Loisel. (SA) on soil fungal abundance, diversity, community composition, trophic modes and functional groups in comparison with bare flat (BF) and native Suaeda salsa (Linn.) Pall. (SS), Scirpus mariqueter Tang et Wang (SM), and Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud. (PA) communities in coastal salt marshes of eastern China, based on analyses of the quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and Illumina MiSeq DNA sequences of fungal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region. Results: SA invasion increased the soil fungal abundance and diversity compared to BF, SS, SM, and PA soils. The increased soil fungal abundance and diversity were highly related to soil organic carbon (C) and nitrogen (N), water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC), litter C:N ratio, and root C:N ratio. Soil fungal community composition was shifted following SA invasion. Specifically, SA invasion significantly enhanced the relative abundance of Basidiomycota, and reduced the relative abundance of Ascomycota compared with BF, SS, SM, and PA soils. Additionally, SA invasion changed soil fungal trophic modes and functional groups. The relative abundance of saprotrophic fungi significantly increased, while the relative abundances of symbiotic and pathotrophic fungi decreased following SA invasion. Conclusions: Our data revealed that SA invasion altered soil fungal abundance, diversity, community composition, trophic modes and functional groups, which were primarily driven by the quality and quantity of plant residues, soil nutrition substrates, as well as soil physicochemical properties. The changes in soil fungal communities, especially their trophic modes and functional groups following SA invasion would greatly affect soil C and N decomposition and accumulation with potential feedback on climate change. Porcine sapelovirus (PSV) is an emerging swine enteric virus that can cause various disorders including acute diarrhea, respiratory distress, reproductive failure, and polioencephalomyelitis in pigs. In this study, we isolated a PSV strain HNHB-01 from a clinical porcine deltacoronavirus- (PDCoV-) positive intestinal content of a diarrheic piglet. PSV was first identified using the small RNA deep sequencing and assembly, and further identified by the electron microscopic observation and the immunofluorescence assay. Subsequently, this virus was serially passaged in swine testis (ST) cells, and the complete genomics of PSV HNHB-01 passage 5 (P5), P30, P60, and P100 were sequenced and analyzed. 9 nucleotide mutations and 7 amino acid changes occurred in the PSV HNHB-01 P100 strain when compared with the PSV HNHB-01 P5. Pathogenicity investigation showed that orally inoculation of PSV HNHB-01 P30 could cause obvious clinical symptoms and had broad tissue tropism in 5-day-old piglets. Epidemiological investigation revealed that PSV infections and the coinfections of diarrhea coronaviruses were highly prevalent in swine herds. The complete genomes of 8 representative PSV epidemic strains were sequenced and analyzed. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the PSV epidemic strains were closely related to other PSV reference strains that located in the Chinese clade. Furthermore, recombination analysis revealed that the recombination events were occurred in downstream of the 2C region in our sequenced PSV HNNY-02/CHN/2018 strain. Our results provided theoretical basis for future research studies of the pathogenic mechanism, evolutionary characteristics, and the development of vaccines against PSV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The spatiotemporal characteristics of dry-wet trends were identified and assessed, and the dominant meteorological factors were identified for the climate of Jiangsu province in humid southeastern China for the period 1960–2019. We conducted the research using data for the entire Jiangsu province as well as three major regions in Jiangsu (Huaibei, Jianghuai, and Sunan) with different regional climates. The results showed that decreased precipitation and relative humidity in spring and autumn over the study period were mainly responsible for the dry trends of the climates of all three regions and the entire province. Precipitation had a greater influence in spring and relative humidity in autumn. Decreases in sunshine hours and wind speed were responsible for the summer wet trends of the climates of Huaibei and Jianghuai and the entire province. However, precipitation increased significantly in the summer and was responsible for the increasing wet trend in Sunan. Significantly increased precipitation in winter was primarily responsible for the increasing wetness in Jianghuai and Sunan and the entire province in that season. However, the wet trend in northern Huaibei in winter was mainly caused by the decrease in wind speed over the study period. For the growing season and annually, the positive effects of changes in wind speed, sunshine hours, and precipitation led to increased humidity index in Jianghuai, Sunan, and the entire province. Precipitation showed a decreasing trend that countered the positive effects of decreases in wind speed and sunshine hours, which resulted in a slight decrease in the humidity index in Huaibei for both the growing season and annually. Sensitivity analysis indicated that the humidity index was positively sensitive to precipitation and relative humidity and negatively sensitive to air temperature, wind speed, and sunshine hours in Jiangsu province during 1960–2019. Overall, the humidity index in this region of southeastern China was most sensitive to changes in precipitation followed, in order of sensitivity, by sunshine hours, air temperature, wind speed, and relative humidity. Our findings provide a theoretical basis for adjusting irrigation programs and efficient utilization of water resources at the regional scale in humid southeastern China. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The accumulation of heavy metals (HMs) in soil caused by mineral resource exploitation and its ancillary industrial processes poses a threat to ecology and public health. Effective risk control measures require a quantification of the impacts and contributions to health risks from individual sources of soil HMs. Based on high-density sampling, soil contamination risk indexes, positive matrix factorization (PMF) model, Monte Carlo simulation and human health risk analysis model were applied to investigate the risk of HMs in a typical mining town in North China. The results showed that As was the most dominant soil pollutant factor, Cd and Hg were the most dominant soil ecological risk factors, and Cr and Ni were the most dominant health risk factors in the study area. Overall, both pollution and ecological risks were at low levels, while there were still some higher hazard areas located in the central and south-central part of the region. According to the probabilistic health risk assessment (HRA), children suffered greater health risks than adults, with 21.63% of non-carcinogenic risks and 53.24% of carcinogenic risks exceeding the prescribed thresholds (HI > 1 and TCR >1E-4). The PMF model identified five potential sources: fuel combustion (FC), processing of building materials with limestone as raw materials (PBML), industry source (IS), iron ore mining combined with garbage (IOG), and agriculture source (AS). PBML is the primary source of soil HM contamination, as well as the major anthropogenic source of carcinogenic risk for all populations. Agricultural inputs associated with As are the major source of non-carcinogenic risk. This study offers a good example of probabilistic HRA using specific sources, which can provide a valuable reference for strategy establishment of pollution remediation and risk prevention and control. Recently, coastal land reclamation through the use of embankments has increased worldwide, and its impacts on ecosystem processes and functionality have been widely reported. However, the ecosystem nitrogen (N) cycling turnover processes following the establishment of coastal embankments remain unknown. For this study, we investigated stocks of various types of N in soils, N storage in plant subsystems, the microbial immobilization and mineralization of N, as well as soil physiochemical properties in embanked and adjacent unembanked Spartina alterniflora , Suaeda salsa , and Phragmites australis saltmarshes in the coastal wetlands of China. Coastal embankments in a S. alterniflora saltmarsh significantly decreased the total plant N storage by 50.24%, concentrations of total soil organic N (SON) by 55.16%, ammonia nitrogen (NH 4 -N) by 32.33%, nitrite nitrogen (NO 2 -N) by 41.23%, nitrate nitrogen (NO 3 -N) by 13.38%, and the value of soil net ammonification (R A) by 83.49%. However, in P. australis saltmarshes they significantly increased the total plant N storage by 160.24%, concentrations of SON by 57.28%, NH 4 -N by 7.89%, NO 2 -N by 101.76%, NO 3 -N by 32.05%, and the value of R A by 392.95%. Nevertheless, there were no significant differences in N cycling following the establishment of coastal embankments in S. salsa saltmarshes. Significant changes in the organic and inorganic soil N pools of S. alterniflora and P. australis saltmarshes were driven by plant residue inputs, which were significantly affected by decreasing soil salinity in these coastal wetlands. Furthermore, our results indicated that coastal embankments altered the immobilization of soil N and mineralization of microorganisms by influencing the growth and activities of soil microbes, which were primarily associated with changes in soil organic and inorganic N pools following the development of coastal embankments. This study examined gender differences in mental health of bereaved parents related to the gender of deceased only child in China, an only-child society with traditional culture of son preference, using data drawn from the China Family Planning Survey on Vulnerable Households in 2017. The findings indicated that parents with deceased only child suffered from more negative mental health symptoms than nonbereaved parents. For only-child-death families, there were no statistically significant gender differences in mental health of parents, and the gender of the deceased only child was basically unrelated to maternal/paternal mental health. Due to the implementation of one-child policy in China, both sons and daughters are highly prized and equally relied on by aging parents owing to the irreplaceability of the only child, which might moderate the effects of traditional culture of son preference on bereaved parental mental health. Three months of weekly rifapentine plus isoniazid (3HP) is a short course regimen for latent tuberculosis infection treatment with satisfied safety and efficacy. However, research on its use in children is limited. In this study, we evaluated the completion rate and safety of the 3HP regimen among children in China. Participants aged 1–14 years receiving 3HP for TB prevention at Shanghai Public Health Clinical Center were followed from December 2019 to November 2020 to evaluate the safety and completion rate of the treatment. Thirty-one children were eligible for inclusion, but five were excluded from the analysis (three were treated with a lower than recommended dose, and two were lost to follow-up). Of the 26 children included in the analysis, the treatment completion rate was 100%. Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) were reported in 38.5% (10/26) of the patients. The most common ADRs were gastrointestinal symptoms (19.2%,5/26), and all ADRs were rated as Grade 1. The 3HP regimen has a high completion rate, and it seems well tolerated in our study population. A typical area, Gaomi City in China, was chosen to discuss the enrichment process of groundwater fluorine in sea water intrusion area. The groundwater had fluorine levels of 0.09–10.99 mg/L, with an average concentration of 1.38 mg/L. The high‐fluorine groundwater was mainly distributed in the unconsolidated Quaternary sediments, where concentrations in 83.6% of the samples exceeded the national limit of 1.0 mg/L. The groundwater in the Quaternary sediments also had higher levels of Cl−, TDS, Mg2+, and pH and lower levels of Ca2+, Co, Ni, and Cu than that in the bedrock. The groundwater fluorine levels in the Quaternary sediments are positively correlated with Cl−, TDS, Mg2+, pH, and negatively correlated with Ca2+, γCa2+/γMg2+, Co, Ni, Cu. Geochemical indices of Cl− and TDS indicate sea water intrusion in the Quaternary high‐fluorine groundwater area (F− > 1.0 mg/L), while they do not indicate any intrusion in the bedrock area. The chemical weathering of minerals was intensified with the intrusion of sea water. Cation exchange was confirmed to occur in the Quaternary sediments and was promoted by sea water intrusion. Cation exchange consumes part of groundwater Ca2+ and permits more F− dissolving. Consequently, in the Quaternary sediments, the groundwater was supersaturated with CaF2 minerals and undersaturated with MgF2 minerals when F− > 1.0 mg/L, while CaF2 and MgF2 minerals both are undersaturated when F− < 1.0 mg/L. Thus, the chemical weathering of minerals and cation exchange caused by sea water intrusion are the crucial processes controlling the groundwater fluorine levels, which should be considered when the groundwater fluorine enrichment mechanism is discussed along coastal zones. • Hydrus-1D was used to simulate T and E of three grasslands in the Loess Plateau. • The effects of climate change on T were greater than that on E. • Precipitation was the most dominant climatic factor affecting T and E. • Constructed grasslands had higher water use efficiency than natural one. • Constructed grasslands led to worse soil water conditions than natural one. Investigating the effects of climate change on transpiration (T) and evaporation (E) in natural and constructed grasslands is of theoretical and practical significance for vegetation restoration and water resource management in the Loess Plateau, China. In this study, a two-year field experiment was conducted in one natural (Imperata cylindrica plot) and two constructed grasslands (Pennisetum giganteum and Medicago sativa plots) in the semi-arid Loess Plateau. Hydrus-1D models were then established and validated to simulate T and E processes under scenarios combining climate characteristics in both future periods and different hydrological years. The results showed that under all climate scenarios, T in the natural grassland, and P. giganteum and M. sativa plots ranged from 63.7–179.3, 126.8–245.5, and 96.9–243.1 mm, respectively, while E ranged from 90.6–131.9, 68.7–92.8, and 70.4–92.4 mm, respectively. Both T and E showed a decreasing trend in the future periods, exhibiting the highest values in wet years and the lowest values in dry years. The effects of climate change on T were greater than that on E in all three grasslands. Of the studied grasslands, T of M. sativa plot exhibited the strongest response, followed by that in the natural grassland and P. giganteum plot. However, E of the natural grassland responded to the strongest degree, followed by that of the P. giganteum and M. sativa plots. Precipitation during the growing-season was the most dominant climatic factor affecting T and E , and was positively linearly related with T and E (P < 0.01) in all three grasslands. The conversion thresholds of precipitation for T - E dominance were 435.8, 149.4, and 253.3 mm for the natural grassland, and P. giganteum and M. sativa plots, respectively. In constructed grasslands, more water was lost through T than through E ; hence, the T / ET ratios were high (>0.55). In contrast, T was high in the natural grassland only in conditions of sufficient precipitation; hence, the T / ET ratio was relatively lower (around 0.5). Precipitation distribution strongly affected the soil water supply, and the natural grassland was more efficient in maintaining soil water than the constructed grasslands. Our study not only improves our understanding of the hydrological processes and water budget under different grass restoration measures, but also provides valuable guidelines for the management of water resources and the restoration of ecological environment in the Loess Plateau. Numerous studies have revealed associations between high intake of whole grains and reduced risk of various cancers. Yet, in recent decades, the traditional Chinese diets have been challenged by reduction in whole grains and increase in refined grains. To assess the impact of this dietary transition on cancer prevention, we analyzed the time trend of whole grain intake using nationally representative sampling data of over 15 thousand individuals from the China Health and Nutrition Survey. We applied the comparative risk assessment method to estimate the population attributable fraction of cancers due to insufficient whole grain intake from 1997 to 2011 and projected the trend of whole grain intake and the associated burden of cancers to 2035. We found a significant decrease of approximately 59% of whole grain intake in the Chinese population from 1997 to 2011. Compared with 1997, insufficient intake of whole grains was responsible for 9940 more cases of breast cancer, 12,903 more cases of colorectal cancer and 434 more cases of pancreatic cancer in 2011. Our projections suggest that if every Chinese would consume 125 g whole grain per day as recommended by the latest Chinese Dietary Guidelines, 0.63% bladder cancer, 8.98% breast cancer, 15.85% colorectal cancer, 3.86% esophageal cancer, 2.52% liver cancer and 2.22% pancreatic cancer (totaling 186,659 incident cases) could theoretically be averted by 2035. • Bacillus Calmette–Guérin (BCG) vaccination can reduce the infection rate of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB). • The protective effect of BCG can be maintained until college enrollment. • The ESAT6-CFP10 skin test (ECST) may underestimate the protective effects of BCG. • The protective effect of BCG is better among college freshmen from rural areas. In this study, we aimed to verify whether Bacillus Calmette–Guérin (BCG) can protect first-year college students against Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) infection by the recombinant fusion protein ESAT6-CFP10 skin test (ECST) or the tuberculin skin test (TST). We conducted a cross-sectional study to assess risk factors for latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI). Vaccine effectiveness of BCG against LTBI, measured by ECST and TST separately, was assessed using multivariable logistic regression. A total of 7351 college freshmen accepted ECST, whereas 7228 accepted TST. A total of 263 (3.58%) tested positive with ECST and 581 (8.04%) tested positive with TST. BCG was significantly associated with LTBI (ECST: adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 0.26; 95% CI 0.09 to 0.73; TST: aOR = 0.25; 95% CI 0.13 to 0.49). The BCG protective effect on freshmen living in rural areas (ECST: aOR = 0.16; 95% CI 0.04 to 0.55; TST: aOR = 0.12; 95% CI 0.04 to 0.33) is better than that of freshmen living in cities (ECST: aOR = 0.53; 95% CI 0.07 to 4.03; TST: aOR = 0.44; 95% CI 0.17 to 1.16). Protection against LTBI was strongly associated with BCG vaccination. A novel skin test (ECST) may underestimate the protective effects of BCG in college freshmen. We report a case of primary cutaneous zygomycosis caused byRhizomucor variabilis and review 6 cases reported from China that share similar features and are different from those cases caused by other species of Mucorales.
