Background: The Begonia species are common shade plants that are mostly found in southwest China. They have not been well studied despite their medicinal and decorative uses because gene penetration, decreased adaptability, and restricted availability are all caused by frequent interspecific hybridization. Result: To understand the patterns of mutation in the chloroplast genomes of different species of Begonia, as well as their evolutionary relationships, we collected seven Begonia species in China and sequenced their chloroplast genomes. Begonia species exhibit a quadripartite structure of chloroplast genomes (157,634 − 169,694 bp), consisting of two pairs of inverted repeats (IR: 26,529 − 37,674 bp), a large single copy (LSC: 75,477 − 86,500 bp), and a small single copy (SSC: 17,861 − 18,367 bp). 128–143 genes (comprising 82–93 protein-coding genes, 8 ribosomal RNAs, and 36–43 transfer RNAs) are found in the chloroplast genomes. Based on comparative analyses, this taxon has a relatively similar genome structure. A total of six substantially divergent DNA regions (trnT-UGU-trnL-UAA, atpF-atpH, ycf4-cemA, psbC-trnS-UGA, rpl32-trnL-UAG, and ccsA-ndhD) are found in the seventeen chloroplast genomes. These regions are suitable for species identification and phylogeographic analysis. Phylogenetic analysis shows that Begonia species that were suited to comparable environments grouped in a small clade and that all Begonia species formed one big clade in the phylogenetic tree, supporting the genus' monophyly. In addition, positive selection sites were discovered in eight genes (rpoC1, rpoB, psbE, psbK, petA, rps12, rpl2, and rpl22), the majority of which are involved in protein production and photosynthesis. Conclusion: Using these genome resources, we can resolve deep-level phylogenetic relationships between Begonia species and their families, leading to a better understanding of evolutionary processes. In addition to enhancing species identification and phylogenetic resolution, these results demonstrate the utility of complete chloroplast genomes in phylogenetically and taxonomically challenging plant groupings. Rare earth elements (REEs) exploitation has caused large‐scale desertification. Biocrusts and their microbial community are crucial for the restoration and revegetation of abandoned mine areas. However, little is known about how microbial communities with biocrusts contribute to the sustainable function of degraded mine lands. Here, we evaluated soil nutrients, microbial community structure, and enzyme activities (involved in C, N, and P cycling) underneath moss biocrusts in REEs mine lands in Jiangxi Province, China. The results showed that the dissimilarities in the diversity, and structure of bacteria/fungi community with and without moss biocrusts were significant. Nevertheless, the effects of moss biocrusts on the abundant fractions of bacterial/fungal communities depend on land use types. Moreover, network hubs affiliated with Gammaproteobacteria (OTU7263) and Geodermatophilus sp. (OTU7087) were identified from moss networks, but no hub was found in bare soil. More importantly, the microbial communities underneath moss biocrusts mainly had direct effects on enzyme activities, while the microbial communities in bare soils had a relatively weak direct influence on enzyme activities, and most effects were indirectly driven via soil abiotic properties. Forests, serving as crucial custodians of our planet's ecological balance, also constitute a significant source of livelihood for humanity. Karst regions, recognized as some of the world's most susceptible landscapes, grapple with the dual predicaments of ecological restoration and resident impoverishment. To bridge the gap between environmental and economic concerns, this manuscript employs an amalgamation of remote sensing and socio-economic methodologies to devise a comprehensive assessment framework, thereby scrutinizing the alterations in forest ecosystems from 2001 to 2020.The investigation reveals that over the past two decades, forest rehabilitation within the study area has yielded commendable outcomes, substantially mitigating various ecological dilemmas instigated by rocky desertification in this region. The forested area has increased significantly, and the ecosystem service value has more than doubled. These improvements are largely attributed to compulsory forest conservation measures, demonstrating their decisive influence. The study advocates meticulous management and conservation strategies to safeguard these unique ecosystems and ensure their sustainability. This research underscores the significance of striking a balance between maintaining ecological integrity and fostering economic development, thereby contributing to the broader discourse on sustainable forest management in vulnerable landscapes. Particle-attached (PA) and free-living (FL) bacterial communities play essential roles in the biogeochemical cycling of essential nutrients in aquatic environments. However, little is known about the factors that drive the differentiation of bacterial lifestyles, especially in flooding lake systems. Here we assessed the compositional and functional similarities between the FL and PA bacterial fractions in a typical flooding lake—the Poyang Lake (PYL) of China. The results revealed that PA communities had significantly different compositions and functions from FL communities in every hydrological period, and the diversity of both PA and FL communities was affected mainly by the water regime rather than bacterial lifestyles. PA communities were more diverse and enriched with Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes, while FL communities had more Actinobacteria. There was a higher abundance of photosynthetic and nitrogen-cycling bacterial groups in PA communities, but a higher abundance of members involved in hydrocarbon degradation, aromatic hydrocarbon degradation, and methylotrophy in FL communities. Water properties (e.g., temperature, pH, total phosphorus) significantly regulated the lifestyle variations of PA and FL bacteria in PYL. Collectively, our results have demonstrated a clear ecological differentiation of PA and FL bacterial communities in flooding lakes, suggesting that the connectivity between FL and PA bacterial fractions is water property-related rather than water regime-related. Purpose: Bryophytes play an important role in post-mining vegetation succession in metal-mining areas. As a pioneer group, bryophytes can prevent soil erosion, increase soil nutrition, and affect subsequent vegetation succession. This study investigated the diversity and distribution of bryophytes in the ion-type rare earth mining area of southern Jiangxi Province in southeast China to reveal: 1) the key environmental factors influencing bryophytes recovery, 2) the effect of bryophytes recovery through community structure composition, and 3) the most dominant and therefore suitable groups for early vegetation restoration. Methods: Sampling was carried out in five mining areas. In each area, the diversity and distribution of bryophytes in five typical habitats [virgin field (VF), orchard, ammonium deposition leaching (ADL), ammonium in situ leaching (AISL), and cropland] were analyzed. Results: A total of 118 species of bryophytes belonging to 66 genera and 36 families were collected and identified. Endemic species were found in all habitats in the mining area, and the dominant bryophytes were common species in all habitats. The bryophyte diversity showed habitat-related changes, in the following order: cropland > orchard > VF > AISL > ADL. A structural equation model showed that soil moisture and slope location directly affected bryophyte diversity. Bryophyte communities with upright growth were the dominant groups that adapted to the harsh post-mining environment. Edaphic factors had a greater influence on the bryophyte distribution than topographic and biological factors, at both the overall and habitat scale. Soil moisture was the most important factor affecting the overall distribution of bryophytes in the mining area. There were clear differences in the importance of factors affecting the bryophyte community structure in different habitats. Conclusion: Although mining activities significantly reduce bryophyte diversity, bryophyte communities adapt to the lack of water and moisture by adjusting their life-form structure and species composition. The common species in mining areas might be suitable materials for local vegetation restoration. Deliberate manipulation of the terrain, nutrient supplementation, and reducing the concentrations of harmful substances will help accelerate the early succession of vegetation in leached soil. Cultivated land resources are important natural resource assets that are related to food security and sustainable development. Due to the many restrictive factors of the karst landform on agricultural production, the quantity and quality of cultivated land in the karst mountainous areas in Southwest China are poor. Reclaiming cultivated land to develop economy or to avoid transitional reclamation to protect ecology is an important proposition in this area. Analyzing changes in the physical and monetary value of cropland resources can help us to formulate more reasonable policies for the development and utilization of cultivated land resources, and to achieve a win-win scenario for economic development and ecological protection. Using multi-source remote sensing data and 20-year landcover data obtained by the GEE platform, this paper evaluated the cropland resources of the karst mountain areas of China at the pixel level. It was found that under the apparent outflow of the physical account of the cultivated land resources, the monetary value still maintained growth, proving that the current cultivated land-use policy in Guizhou Province has significantly improved the value of local cultivated land resources. • The expansion of plastic greenhouses in localized peri-urban agriculture contributes to ensuring urban food security and establishing resilient regional food system. • An integrated approach consisting of econometric modeling and machine learning was used to investigate contributions and non-linear mechanisms of PMF drivers. • Demand-driven forces from county-level economic centers are the mainstay in mechanisms of the spatial pattern of city-region PMF. • Complex interplay between policy intervention and market mechanisms in PMF expansion reveals that establishment of vegetable production bases mitigate effects of market proximity. • Synergistic interventions in state-led food localization, market accessibility and road connectivity foster plastic-mulched farmland expansion. An interactive confluence of top-down state interventions and bottom-up market forces has driven a surge of plastic-mulched farmland (PMF), especially in dynamic peri-urban agricultural landscapes, with significant implications for global food security. Nevertheless, there is a dearth of literature regarding the comprehensive policy-market mechanisms on the diffusion of plastic greenhouses. We combine the strength of spatial lag Tobit and BRT models to examine respective roles of policy and market as well as their intrinsic interactions in facilitating PMF growth. Our analysis reveals that both state promotion of food localization policies and spatial proximity to markets increase the intensity of PMF , and market-driven forces are confirmed to be the preponderant determinant. State investments in city-region vegetable production bases exert moderating effect on market- PMF linkages by alleviating market constraints on greenhouses adoption in remote farming regions, while direct policy effects show heterogeneity with different road accessibility, signaling a complex interplay in the interaction mechanism. The counterfactual simulation further emphasize a synergistic effect of policy-market confluence on PMF expansion, suggesting a robust combination of state interventions and market mechanisms. We conclude with insights for planning strategies of greenhouse agriculture and peri-urban farmland use, which shed light on the spatial management framework for regional food systems. Ardisia plants have been used as medicinal plants for a long time in China. Traditional techniques such as morphological, microscopic, and chemical identification methods all have limitations in the species identification of Ardisia. For the sake of drug safety, four DNA barcodes (psbA-trnH , ITS, rbcL , and matK) were assessed for Chinese Ardisia plants using a total of 121 individuals from 33 species. Four criteria (The success rates of PCR amplification, DNA barcoding gap, DNA sequence similarity analysis and NJ tree clustering analysis) were used to evaluate the species identification ability of these four DNA barcodes. The results show that ITS had the highest efficiency in terms of PCR and sequencing and exhibited the most apparent inter- and intra-specific divergences and the highest species identification efficiency. There was no significant increase in species identification after combining the three cpDNA fragments with the ITS fragment. Considering the cost and experimental effectiveness, we recommend ITS as the core barcode for identifying Chinese Ardisia plants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Factor strategies have gained growing popularity in industry with the fast development of machine learning. Usually, multi-factors are fed to an algorithm for some cross-sectional return predictions, which are then further used to construct a long-short portfolio. Instead of predicting the value of the stock return, emerging studies predict a ranked stock list using the mature learn-to-rank technology. In this study, we propose a new listwise learn-to-rank loss function which aims to emphasize both the top and the bottom of a rank list. Our loss function, motivated by the long-short strategy, is endogenously shift-invariant and can be viewed as a direct generalization of ListMLE. Under different transformation functions, our loss can lead to consistency with binary classification loss or permutation level 0-1 loss. A probabilistic explanation for our model is also given as a generalized Plackett-Luce model. Based on a dataset of 68 factors in the China A-share market from 2006 to 2019, our empirical study has demonstrated the strength of our method which achieves an out-of-sample annual return of 38% with Sharpe ratio 2. Climate change has made it essential to understand the effects of drought on carbon dynamics in tropical forest ecosystems. However, research on the postdrought (PD) period is relatively limited, particularly with regard to the resilience of the carbon cycle affected by available water. To determine the effects of water availability during PD on resilience and legacy effects in tropical forests, we used a spatially explicit individual-based dynamic global vegetation model (SEIB-DGVM) to simulate gross primary productivity (GPP) to proxy the process. We established multiple water supply scenarios based on ecological water demands and regional climatic standard precipitation through the composite of gradients in quantity and duration to characterize variations in environmental water availability after droughts end. Under different PD water supply patterns, the degree of GPP resilience and its legacy effects varied significantly. Specifically, ecosystem resilience to drought was positively correlated with the percentage of PD water supply and negatively correlated with the duration until water conditions returned to normal, while the negative legacy effect of drought on GPP exhibited the opposite relationship. After a drought, a rapid high-level water supply promoted stronger GPP resiliency and moderated the drought legacy effects. Although legacy effects varied with water supply patterns, the negative legacy effect on GPP appeared only in the first year after drought. Observing biomass changes in roots, leaves, woody plants, and herbaceous plants after droughts, it is clear that tropical forest ecosystems can adjust their carbon allocation strategies in response to differences in water availability. To more accurately predict the fate of tropical forests in response to climate change, it is necessary to assess the impact of PD environmental climate condition changes on their dynamic resilience processes. The author describes the difficult beginnings of publishing in new China, a country devastated in large part by the Japanese occupation and civil war. Publishing houses of all types were then scattered over a huge territory and very few. This was particularly the case for publishing children's and youth literature. Despite this difficult situation, as early as the end of 1950, the first specialized publishing house for children and youth audiences was established in Shanghai. The author shows the difficult further way of building a large publishing movement and institutions cooperating with it, which specialized in work for children and youth audiences. It indicates the role of the publishing movement in expanding the education of children and young people in China. It signals the collapse of an excellent business in the gloomy period of the cultural revolution, and then shows a gradual rebirth, and then, again, the dynamic development of the industry in the early 1980s in connection with the implementation of the "reform and opening up" policy. An important stage in this dynamic development was the formation of a new media group aimed at children and youth audiences in 2000 - the Chinese youth and children's information and publishing cooperative. This has led to the creation of similar media groups throughout China. Over 70 years of operation, new China has made tremendous progress in the field of children's and youth literature and publishing. Interestingly, this process, especially in the initial period, was carried out in cooperation with its counterpart in Poland. Ardisia gigantifolia is a medicinal plant; its herbal medicinal product has played important roles in the ways of life of people in China. However, commercial products of this herbal medicine are frequently adulterated with Rhododendron molle root and Clerodendrum cyrtophyllum stem. In fact, R. molle has hepatotoxic effects which could pose health issues to the end user. In this study, we applied DNA barcoding coupled with high resolution melting (Bar-HRM) to distinguish A. gigantifolia and adulterant products. Two DNA barcode loci (ITS2 and psbA-trnH) were chosen for Bar-HRM analysis. We found that ITS2 and psbA-trnH regions contain some inter-species variability, which showed enough discrimination capability for Bar-HRM analysis. We applied the Bar-HRM method to test the method, and found that some products labelled as "A. gigantifolia" collected from local markets in China were identified to contain C. cyrtophyllum. Our study demonstrated that DNA barcoding coupled with high resolution melting can be used as a routine test to guarantee the quality of A. gigantifolia herbal products. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bacterioplankton communities play a critical role in biogeochemical cycling in freshwater environments, but how the hydrological regime impacts the assembly of bacterioplankton communities remains unclear. This study examined differences in bacterioplankton community structures between wet (July and September) and dry (October and November) seasons in two consecutive years (2016 and 2017) in Poyang Lake, the largest seasonal freshwater lake in China. Our results revealed no overall difference in bacterioplankton compositions and their predicted functions among spatially separated sites. However, bacterioplankton communities did show significant temporal shifts, mainly between samples in November and other months. Transitions from the dry to the wet season were observed in October in both sampling years. Meanwhile, insignificant spatial but significant temporal differences were also found for physicochemical variables. Moreover, redundancy analysis indicates that compared with water depth, water temperature was found to better explain changes in the bacterioplankton community. These findings consistently indicate that the bacterioplankton community in Poyang Lake is relatively less sensitive to annual hydrology shifts than water temperature and nutrient conditions. This paper documents the existence of a type of local spillovers—free riding among neighbors—in the diffusion of color television sets (CTVs) in rural China. Consistent with the free‐riding hypothesis, we find that households with no TV (non‐BWTV [black and white television set] households) are less likely to buy their first CTV in villages where a higher fraction of households already own BWTVs. Consistent with the free‐riding hypothesis, we further find that this negative relationship is more pronounced for those non‐BWTV households with lower income, facing lower BWTV ownership rates, and living closer to their neighbors. Real-time control strategies are important methods for high-frequency transit to counteract the effects of bus bunching in passenger waiting time. This paper extends previous literature with the development of an optimization model for multiple lines in a corridor capable of executing a dynamic control strategy based on passenger choice behavior with real-time information. The bi-level model integrates "passenger perceptions,""service selection," and "control strategy" effectively. The upper level model is a control model with the objective of minimizing the total waiting time of passengers in the system composed of common lines to decide whether a bus arriving at the hub should be held and its holding time. The lower level model is an allocation model with the utilization of a Nested Logit model to study passenger choice behavior. In addition, a heuristic algorithm is introduced to solve the problem. The effectiveness of the model is evaluated with the data of two lines in Dalian city of China. The results show that the control strategy proposed in this paper outperforms the simple control strategy without passenger choice behavior, where the waiting time of passengers, the number of buses that need to hold, and bus holding time are all reduced. Forest conversion can affect the diversity and community structure of soil bacteria and fungi. However, little is known about the impact of forest conversion on aboveground-belowground linkages and associated nutrient cycling. To address this research gap, we investigated the aboveground and belowground recovery, the specific responses of bacterial and fungal communities and the associated nutrient cycling in the conversion from artificial Chinese fir forests to broad-leaved conifer-mixed forests at 5-yr-, 10-yr- and 25-yr-old stands after selective logging. Bacterial and fungal community structures were analyzed using high-throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA and ITS genes. Six microbial enzyme activities involved in the cycling of C, N and P were studied. Our results showed that the aboveground forest structure was recovering towards native evergreen broad-leaved forest after selective logging. The alpha-diversity of fungal community was significantly increased across the chronosequence of logging, but the alpha-diversity of bacterial community was not. Fungal community composition and structure changed during forest conversion, whereas the bacterial community showed slight changes in unique taxa. Neither bacterial nor fungal community structures changed towards the similar pattern as native evergreen broad-leaved forest across 25 years. These results indicated that fungi were more susceptible to forest conversion than bacteria. Furthermore, compared with bacteria, fungi were more strongly affected by soil properties, such as NH 4 +-N, pH, AK and TOC. Structural equation modeling indicated that fungi had strong impacts on C-, N- and P-cycling but that bacteria only affected C-cycling. Overall, the fungal community may play a more important role in the aboveground-belowground linkages and C-, N-, and P-cycling compared with the bacterial community during forest conversion. Bacteria play a vital role in various biogeochemical processes in lacustrine sediment ecosystems. This study is among the first to investigate the spatial distribution patterns of bacterial community composition in the sediments of Poyang Lake, the largest freshwater lake of China. Sediment samples were collected from the main basins and mouths of major rivers that discharge into the Poyang Lake in May 2011. Quantitative PCR assay and pyrosequencing analysis of 16S rRNA genes showed that the bacteria community abundance and compositions of Poyang Lake sediment varied largely among sampling sites. A total of 25 phyla and 68 bacterial orders were distinguished. Burkholderiales, Gallionellales ( Beta- proteobacteria), Myxococcales, Desulfuromonadales ( Delta- proteobacteria), Sphingobacteriales ( Bacteroidetes) , Nitrospirales ( Nitrospirae), Xanthomonadales ( Gamma- proteobacteria) were identified as the major taxa and collectively accounted for over half of annotated sequences. Moreover, correlation analyses suggested that higher loads of total phosphorus and heavy metals (copper, zinc and cadmium) could enhance bacterial abundance in the sediment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents an overview of the history of the Polish cultural relations with China. It covers the period from XII/XIII century to the year 2013. In the distant past Polish missionaries travelled to China and acquired knowledge on this country and its rich cultural heritage. The most prominent person of that epoch was Michal Boym, a devoted and courageous Jesuit, one of the best European specialist on China in XVII century. The establishment of diplomatic relations with the New China on 1949, was a turning-point in Polish-Chinese relations. Its concerned also cultural cooperation. Ever since started process of better reciprocal knowledge, especially in sphere of literature where even were some interaction. At the last years important role in cultural relations played a big projects as Polish participation in EXPO 2010 in Shanghai and the Year of Chopin. Increasing role played also initiatives of Polish cultural institutions in China and presence and development of teaching Chinese language at Universities and by Institutes of Confucius. The development of political cooperation between both countries and new Chinese initiatives concerning: bilateral relations, relations China with 16 Central and Eastern European countries and relations the EU -- China permit to have great expectation for a future of Polish-Chinese cooperation, cultural cooperation included. Abstract: Previous studies have suggested a link between the presence of Candida invasion and oral premalignant lesion. The objective of the current study was to investigate the clinicopathologic features of candidal infection in biopsies of a large retrospective cohort of patients with premalignant oral leukoplakia (n = 396) from eastern China and assess the clinical implications. Candidal hyphae were detected with periodic acid-Schiff staining of the biopsy samples. The results showed that 59 patients (15.9%) with oral leukoplakia were infected by Candida. The average age of the patients with candidal leukoplakia was 60.7 years with equal sex ratio. The tongue was the predominant site (66.1%). Epithelial hyperplasia and dysplasia were involved in 44.1% and 55.9% of patients, respectively. Multivariate analysis revealed that patient older than 60 years (odd ratio [OR], 2.28; P = .005), lesion located at the tongue (OR, 1.89; P = .038), and presence of dysplasia (OR, 2.02; P = .018) were significant risk factors of candidal infection in oral leukoplakia. Collectively, clinicopathologic features of candidal leukoplakia in eastern China were elucidated. A point to highlight was that we identified a subpopulation that was more liable to candidal infection. Elderly patients with oral tongue leukoplakia with epithelial dysplasia had much higher risk of candidal infection. Abstract: With economic development, urban residents’ in levels rises gradually and their daily consumption structure tends to be demands of development and enjoyment. Sport consumption, as a social and cultural consumption, with a high level of enjoyment and development of consumer properties, has been gradually recognized by the general population and an important reference for the measure of quality of residents’ life. In this paper, questionnaire survey, literature, expert interviews and mathematical statistics methods are used to analyze the awareness, motivation, level of consumption, survey structure and constraints of sports consumption of urban residents of Henan Province. The results are: the proportion of sports participants of urban residents’ of Henan Province is small, there is a large space for sports consumption development; sports consumer awareness is relatively backward, sports consumption values are gradually formed; the overall level of sports consumption is low and the consumption structure is single. Therefore, the advocacy of sports consumption should be strengthened, attention should be paid to physical infrastructure, strengthening the sports industry structure optimization, put emphasis on the introduction and training of sports talents, target to develop sports tourism and minority sports resources, and create a good environment of csports consumption. Poyang Lake is the largest fresh water lake in China. In this study, the objective was to examine the diversity of bacterial community in this environment. The phylogenetic composition of bacterioplankton communities from two sites and two dates (northern and southern sub-basins in October 2006 and in May 2007, respectively) in the water column of Poyang Lake were investigated by partially sequencing cloned 16SrRNA genes. Moreover, restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) was applied in the 16SrRNA gene clones. In total, four clone libraries were constructed and 347 clones were screened by RFLP, yielding 153 operational taxonomic units, which mainly belonged to the proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Cyanobacteria, Verrucomicrobia and Planctomycetes. Our results showed that Beta- proteobacteria was the most significant lineage, with dominant numbers of operational taxonomic units in the northern October 2006, southern October 2006 and May 2007 libraries. The highest bacterial diversity occurred in the library from the southern sub-basin in May 2007 and the lowest in the library from the northern sub-basin in May 2007. Horizontal and temporal differences associated with the concentration of total phosphorus, water temperature and pH suggested that the trophic state and the physicochemical properties of lake play key roles in sustaining bacterial community composition structure. Conclusions: A set of Chinese Mandarin monosyllable test lists with good reliability and sensitivity was established. Objectives. The primary purpose of this study was to evaluate the equivalence of a group of monosyllable lists. Methods: A genetic algorithm was adopted to reorganize the material based on the Phoneme Allocation Table; 10 lists with 25 monosyllabic test items in each were generated. A two-factor design was used for the equivalence evaluation test. A total of 80 normal-hearing and native Mandarin-speaking university students (40 males and 40 females) participated in the trial. Every subject was tested with all 10 lists in sequence at 5 presentation levels (-5, 0, 5, 10, and 15 dB HL). Performance-intensity (P-I) function of each list was fit before P-I curve slope and recognition threshold were calculated. Results: Equivalence evaluation results indicated good psychophysical equivalence between the 10 lists except for list 2. List 9 has a reused item. After the elimination of lists 2 and 9, multivariate ANOVA revealed a good equivalence between the remaining eight lists ( p == 0.136). The objective of this study was to analyze the echocardiographic characteristics of juxtaposition of the atrial appendages and to determine its prevalence in children with congenital heart disease. From June 1998 to December 2008, 10,880 children underwent selective angiocardiography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and echocardiography for evaluation of congenital heart disease. Juxtaposition of the atrial appendages was diagnosed based on the results of angiocardiography and MRI; the echocardiographic characteristics of this anomaly were analyzed retrospectively. There were 33 patients diagnosed with juxtaposition of the right atrial appendage (JRAA); no patient was diagnosed with juxtaposition of the left atrial appendage. The prevalence of JRAA in children with congenital heart disease was 0.30%. JRAA and abnormal spatial orientation of the atrial septum were visualized by Doppler echocardiography in 28 cases. In the remaining five cases, three cases with suspected JRAA could not be determined by echocardiography and the diagnosis was missed in two cases. The most common associated anomalies were conotruncal malformations (16 cases with double outlet of the right ventricle, 9 cases with pulmonary atresia, 6 cases with transposition of the great arteries, 1 case with tetralogy of Fallot) and tricuspid malformations (6 cases with tricuspid straddling, 3 cases with tricuspid atresia, 2 cases with tricuspid valve stenosis). Based on the characteristic alteration of the plane of the atrial septum and visualization of the malpositioned right atrial appendage, JRAA can be accurately diagnosed by Doppler echocardiography. Droughts that occur in tropical forests (TF) are expected to significantly impact the gross primary production (GPP) and the capacity of carbon sinks. Therefore, it is crucial to evaluate and analyze the sensitivities of TF-GPP to the characteristics of drought events for understanding global climate change. In this study, the standardized precipitation index (SPI) was used to define the drought intensity. Then, the spatially explicit individual-based dynamic global vegetation model (SEIB-DGVM) was utilized to simulate the dynamic process of GPP corresponding to multi-gradient drought scenarios—rain and dry seasons × 12 level durations × 4 level intensities. The results showed that drought events in the dry season have a significantly greater impact on TF-GPP than drought events in the rainy season, especially short-duration drought events. Furthermore, the impact of drought events in the rainy season is mainly manifested in long-duration droughts. Due to abundant rainfall in the rainy season, only extreme drought events caused a significant reduction in GPP, while the lack of water in the dry season caused significant impacts due to light drought. Effective precipitation and soil moisture stock in the rainy season are the most important support for the tropical forest dry season to resist extreme drought events in the study area. By combining satellite tracking, land-cover extracted from Landsite 8 images, and the traditional stable isotope analysis, we studied the habitat selection and food preference of a vulnerable migratory waterbird, the White-naped Crane (Grus vipio), in one of its key stagging sites, the Shandian River Basin in the semi-arid northern China, to provide knowledge that is critical for its conservation in the Anthropocene. Our results showed that the White-naped Cranes used both uplands and natural wetlands in the stopover site. While the cranes used farmland and natural land cover equally as night-time roosting grounds, they spent most daytime foraging at farmlands. Despite the extensive usage of croplands as their foraging ground, the Bayesian mixing models based on stable isotopic analysis revealed that crop residues after harvesting, such as Maize (Zea mays) and Naked Oat (Avena chinensis), were only a small fraction of the White-naped Cranes' diet (∼19%), and their diet composited mainly natural plants, such as Allium ledebourianum , Potentilla anserina , and P. tanacetifoli. Moreover, more than 20% of the total wetlands in the region were modelled as home range of the cranes. On contrast, less than 10% of croplands and about 1% of the unused uplands were identified as home range. In addition, the entire core habitats were located in natural wetlands. Our findings demonstrated the importance of natural wetlands for the survival of the threatened crane. However, the satellite-derived land cover data showed that croplands increased rapidly in the last decade in this area, at the expense of natural wetlands. With the sharp decrease of White-naped Crane population in China, the conservation of stopover sites becomes imperative. Based on our analysis, we recommend the following management actions: conserving adequate natural wetland area, regulating anthropogenic pressures such as the use of herbicides, expanding the duration and extent of current conservation regulations, establishing a comprehensive monitoring program, and initiating basin-scale ecological restoration, for effective conservation of this threatened species. These integrated conservation strategies for migratory waterbirds are necessary, considering the rapid land-cover changes and agricultural expansion that have been occurring in East Asian-Australasian Flyway, especially in the semi-arid temperate zone. Crop residues management has great effects on weeds in croplands. To understand the weed responses to crop residues management and weeds impact on crop yield, a field trial with three crop residues management strategies has been conducted in the North China Plain since 2008. Weed community composition and structure across the species, morphological types, life forms, and community levels were investigated during 2019–2020. The results show that the field with crop residues retention significantly decreased weed density than that in the field with no crop residues retention. Furthermore, total crop residues retention significantly decreased weed density than half crop residues retention. Compared with no crop residues retention, the weed aboveground dry matter in the field with total and half crop residues retention significantly decreased. Meanwhile, the maize grain yield significantly increased, resulting from weeds decreased with crop residues retention on the field. Negative correlations were found between maize grain yield and the density and aboveground dry matter of monocotyledonous weeds. These findings indicate that long term crop residues retention under conventional tillage might be an effective agronomic practice to retard weed growth. Aim Most of the existing risk scores for identifying people with reduced estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) involve laboratory-based factors, which are not convenient and cost-effective to use in a large population-based screening programme. We aimed at using non-invasive variables to identify subjects with reduced eGFR in a Chinese working population. Methods Two study populations were recruited in 2012 and 2015, respectively. The 2012 study population ( n = 14 374) was randomly separated as the training dataset ( n = 9621) or the internal testing dataset ( n = 4753) at a ratio of 2:1, and the 2015 study population ( n = 4371) was used as the external testing dataset. Stepwise logistic regression analysis with age, gender, hypertension and body mass index (BMI) status were first performed in the training dataset and then validated in both internal and external testing dataset. A nomogram was further developed based on the final model. Results Results showed that older females with higher BMI status were more likely to have reduced eGFR. The model had excellent discrimination (AUC: 0.887 [95%CI: 0.865, 0.909] in the internal validation and 0.880 [95%CI: 0.829, 0.931] in the external validation) and calibration (Hosmer-Lemeshow test, P = 0.798 and 0.397 for internal and external dataset, respectively). The probability of having reduced eGFR increased gradually from <0.1% at a total score of 0 to 26% at a total score of 58 shown in the nomogram. Conclusion Non-invasive variables could help identify individuals at high risk of reduced eGFR for further kidney function testing or intervention, aiding in decision-making and resource allocation in large population screening. China, the world’s largest CO 2 emitter, is continuing its long-term strategy to use transportation investments as a tool for development. With the expectation that transportation will contribute 30–40% of the total CO 2 emissions in China in the near future, there is an imminent need to identify how the development of different transportation modes may have different long-term effects on CO 2 emissions. Using time series data over the period of 1985–2013, this paper applies the combined autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) and vector error correction model (VECM) approach to identify short- and long-run causal relationships between CO 2 emissions and mode-specific transportation development, including railway, road, airline, and inland waterway. We find that China’s domestic expansions of road, airline, and waterway infrastructure lead to long-run increases in CO 2 emissions. Among them, waterway has the strongest positive impact on CO 2 emissions, followed by road. Despite a short-run, positive impact on CO 2 emissions, railway expansion leads to long-run decreases in CO 2 emissions. The results are especially encouraging for the central government of China given its long-standing and on-going efforts to expand railway infrastructure at the national level. Greater comprehension of the intricate impacts of cultivated land use change on social and natural systems is of paramount importance for both immediate and long-term policy decisions and sustainable agricultural development. While prior research has examined specific elements of cultivated land use, there has been limited empirical research assessing interactions and feedback to examine the interplay among the intricacies of economic growth, social change, and their environmental impacts within a cultivated land use system. Hence, we introduce a nuanced system dynamics simulation model designed to evaluate the intricate interplay among social, economic, and ecological subsystems within the context of cultivated land use, with the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain of China serving as the case study. Our research elucidates that economic expansion tends to precipitate increased agrochemical application, highlighting that strategies to synchronize economic advancement with agricultural land conservation may alleviate the environmental stressors tied to regional land use. Furthermore, our analysis indicates that an integrative development strategy, which carefully balances economic acceleration with the reinforcement of agricultural land protection, can yield a measurable enhancement in agrarian environmental standards. This paper made a statistical analysis of the scale development of six energy-intensive industries, and explored the fluctuation characteristics of their carbon emissions. The empirical mode decomposition (EMD) model was further introduced to analyze the and synergistic effect among the driving factors of carbon emission, revealing the synergistic mechanism of long-term trend and short-term volatility of factors. Then, the elastic sensitivity analysis model of carbon emissions in energy-intensive industries was constructed to study the heterogeneity of driving effects of factor indicators. From the perspective of factors driving, this article reveals the heterogeneity of the driving effects of ten key factor indicators including economic level (GDP), urbanization level (UP), industrial structure (IS), technological innovation (TI), and environmental regulation (ER); from the perspective of industry development, this paper summarized the "stable and balanced" and "sensitive and uneven" trends presented by the heterogeneity of the six energy-intensive industries. Abstract Saffron (Crocus sativus), one of the most expensive herbs in China, has been subject to various types of adulteration as a consequence of its high price and limited production. The present work describes a sensitive, efficient and simple technique for on-site saffron identification. Recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) in combination with a universal lateral flow immunoassay strip (saffron RPA-LFD) was employed for rapid visual detection of saffron. This assay was able to detect saffron in less than 15 min at 37 °C. This assay was highly sensitive with detection limits of 1 pg genomic DNA, and highly specific, with no cross-reaction with common saffron adulterants. This proposed simple and sensitive assay is well-suited for rapid molecular detection of saffron, with results in the form of the presence (positive bands) or absence (no positive bands) of bands. Abstract: Ligustrum robustum Bl. (syn. Ligustrum purpurascens Y. C. Yang), a species growing in the southwest of China is used as traditional Chinese tea named Ku-Ding-Cha. 16 compounds (1–16) were isolated from the species L. robustum in present investigation and seven of them (1, 2, 11–14, 16) were firstly reported from this species, compound 14 was firstly reported from the genus Ligustrum and the family Oleaceae. Accurately estimating the duration of freeway incidents can enhance emergency management practices and reduce the likelihood of secondary incidents. To investigate the mechanisms through which key factors influence incident duration, this study sorted out the characteristics and variables of the incident duration on a special freeway in Zhejiang Province, that is, the ring road, and developed a latent class accelerated hazard model. Heterogeneity was incorporated into the model. Three distributions (Weibull, Log-normal, and Log-logistic) were compared, and the Log-logistic distribution exhibited superior performance. The analysis revealed two distinct latent classes: Latent Class 1 and Class 2, had class membership probability of 0.53 and 0.47, respectively, with a total of 11 variables being statistically significant at the 0.05 significance level. It is worth noting that, some neglected explanatory variables are discussed in depth in this study. For example, the mechanism of which specific lane is closed has an impact on the incident duration, rather than a general discussion of the number of lane closures. Furthermore, the way in which the driver involved in the incident reports to the police has a significant impact on the duration of incidents. Notably, potential heterogeneity and its influencing mechanism are captured in the model. Additionally, by predicting class membership using posterior probabilities, it was determined that most data points were more likely to belong to Class 1, and the incident duration primarily ranged between 0 and 60 minutes. Extensive microbial interactions occur within insect hosts. However, the interactions between the Huanglongbing (HLB) pathogen and endosymbiotic bacteria within the Asian citrus psyllid (ACP, Diaphorina citri Kuwayama) in wild populations remain elusive. Thus, this study aimed to detect the infection rates of HLB in the ACP across five localities in China, with a widespread prevalence in Ruijin (RJ, 58%), Huidong (HD, 28%), and Lingui (LG, 15%) populations. Next, microbial communities of RJ and LG populations collected from citrus were analyzed via 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. The results revealed a markedly higher microbial diversity in the RJ population compared to the LG population. Moreover, the PCoA analysis identified significant differences in microbial communities between the two populations. Considering that the inter-population differences of Bray-Curtis dissimilarity in the RJ population exceeded those between populations, separate analyses were performed. Our findings indicated an increased abundance of Enterobacteriaceae in individuals infected with HLB in both populations. Random forest analysis also identified Enterobacteriaceae as a crucial indicator of HLB infection. Furthermore, the phylogenetic analysis suggested a potential regulatory role of ASV4017 in Enterobacteriaceae for ACP, suggesting its possible attractant activity. This research contributes to expanding the understanding of microbial communities associated with HLB infection, holding significant implications for HLB prevention and treatment.

Antenatal exposure to air pollutants is thought to be associated with a variety of maternal blood markers as well as adverse birth outcomes. However, the dysgenic influence of air pollutants on the antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) in mothers and their pregnancy outcomes remains unclear. In the current study, 371 mother-infant pairs (189 healthy: 182 APS) from Nanjing Maternal and Child Health Hospital as well as air pollutants concentration from their living environment were used to investigate correlations between air pollution with maternal blood indicators and fetal birth weight in the groups of APS and healthy mothers. Generalized linear model was used to evaluate the contributions of air pollutant exposure during pregnancy to the blood indicators variation. The relationships between birth weight with specific air pollutant and blood index were analyzed using ridge regression. Results showed that APS fetal birth weight was significantly impacted by air pollutant exposure during pregnancy, in particular, the birth weight decreased significantly along with increasing fine particulate matter 2.5 (PM 2.5 ) and fine particulate matter 10 (PM 10 ) exposure concentrations throughout pregnancy. In contrast, birth weight increased significantly with sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ) exposure. In addition, APS-related blood indicators comprised of platelet distribution width (PDW), total bilirubin (TBIL), mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet-larger cell ratio (P&#95;LCR), homocysteine (HCY), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), direct bilirubin (DBIL), basophilic granulocyte (BAS), platelet thrombocytocrit (PCT), preprandial glucose levels (OGTT0), monocytes (MON), and monocytes ratio (MON&#95;ratio) were also strongly related with prenatal exposure to PM 2.5 and PM 10 , in which PDW levels showed most strongly negative impaction on fetal birth weight. The construction of world-class Bay makes the marine ecology in Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Great Bay Area in risk. Based on the DPSIR index framework, Lotka-Volterra symbiosis model is applied to calculate symbiosis degree between coastal socio-economic system and marine ecosystem in 9 coastal cities. It is found that the marine ecological pressure in this area have not been reversed in recent 20 years. Most cities are in the stage that socio-economic development and marine ecological damage coexist. In Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Dongguan and Zhongshan, the damaged marine ecology has begun to restrain the further expansion of economy and society. The massive population agglomeration in Hong Kong, Macao and other places has caused serious marine ecological stress. Aims: To investigate secular trends in severe periodontitis incidence, prevalence and disability-adjusted life year (DALY) rates in China, India, Japan, South Korea and Thailand from 1990 to 2017., Materials and Methods: Data were obtained from the "Global Burden of Disease Study" 2017. The annual percentage change and average annual percentage change were calculated using Joinpoint regression analysis. The independent age, period and cohort effects were estimated by age-period-cohort analysis., Results: From 1990 to 2017, the overall age-standardized incidence, prevalence and DALY rates increased in China, Japan and India, while decreasing in South Korea and Thailand. The highest incidence, prevalence and DALY rates were in India. By APC analysis, the age effect presented increase in 20-59 years in China, Japan and South Korea, 20-54 years in India and 20-64 years in Thailand; the period effect showed progressive increases in five countries, with the most significant increase shown in China; the cohort effect showed monotonic decreases with birth cohort in five countries., Conclusions: Severe periodontitis poses a serious burden in Asian countries, especially China and India. Objective: Several COVID-19 patients have overlapping comorbidities. The independent role of each component contributing to the risk of COVID-19 is unknown, and how some non-cardiometabolic comorbidities affect the risk of COVID-19 remains unclear., Methods: A retrospective follow-up design was adopted. A total of 1,160 laboratory-confirmed patients were enrolled from nine provinces in China. Data on comorbidities were obtained from the patients' medical records. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to estimate the odds ratio ( OR ) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI ) of the associations between comorbidities (cardiometabolic or non-cardiometabolic diseases), clinical severity, and treatment outcomes of COVID-19., Results: Overall, 158 (13.6%) patients were diagnosed with severe illness and 32 (2.7%) had unfavorable outcomes. Hypertension (2.87, 1.30-6.32), type 2 diabetes (T2DM) (3.57, 2.32-5.49), cardiovascular disease (CVD) (3.78, 1.81-7.89), fatty liver disease (7.53, 1.96-28.96), hyperlipidemia (2.15, 1.26-3.67), other lung diseases (6.00, 3.01-11.96), and electrolyte imbalance (10.40, 3.00-26.10) were independently linked to increased odds of being severely ill. T2DM (6.07, 2.89-12.75), CVD (8.47, 6.03-11.89), and electrolyte imbalance (19.44, 11.47-32.96) were also strong predictors of unfavorable outcomes. Women with comorbidities were more likely to have severe disease on admission (5.46, 3.25-9.19), while men with comorbidities were more likely to have unfavorable treatment outcomes (6.58, 1.46-29.64) within two weeks., Conclusion: Besides hypertension, diabetes, and CVD, fatty liver disease, hyperlipidemia, other lung diseases, and electrolyte imbalance were independent risk factors for COVID-19 severity and poor treatment outcome. Objective: To investigate the value of initial CT quantitative analysis of ground-glass opacity (GGO), consolidation, and total lesion volume and its relationship with clinical features for assessing the severity of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)., Materials and Methods: A total of 84 patients with COVID-19 were retrospectively reviewed from January 23, 2020 to February 19, 2020. Patients were divided into two groups: severe group (n = 23) and non-severe group (n = 61). Clinical symptoms, laboratory data, and CT findings on admission were analyzed. CT quantitative parameters, including GGO, consolidation, total lesion score, percentage GGO, and percentage consolidation (both relative to total lesion volume) were calculated. Relationships between the CT findings and laboratory data were estimated. Finally, a discrimination model was established to assess the severity of COVID-19., Results: Patients in the severe group had higher baseline neutrophil percentage, increased high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and procalcitonin levels, and lower baseline lymphocyte count and lymphocyte percentage ( p < 0.001). The severe group also had higher GGO score ( p < 0.001), consolidation score ( p < 0.001), total lesion score ( p < 0.001), and percentage consolidation ( p = 0.002), but had a lower percentage GGO ( p = 0.008). These CT quantitative parameters were significantly correlated with laboratory inflammatory marker levels, including neutrophil percentage, lymphocyte count, lymphocyte percentage, hs-CRP level, and procalcitonin level ( p < 0.05). The total lesion score demonstrated the best performance when the data cut-off was 8.2%. Background: Both periodontal disease and benign prostatic hyperplasia are age-related diseases that affect millions of people worldwide. Hence, this study aimed to investigate the association between periodontal disease and the risk of benign prostatic hyperplasia., Methods: A total of 4930 participants were selected from an available health examination that was carried out in 2017, only males were considered for further analysis. All eligible males were divided into benign prostatic hyperplasia and normal groups, the benign prostatic hyperplasia group was then divided into prostate volume ≤ 60 g and > 60 g subgroups; all their periodontal status was extracted and then into normal (CPI score of 0), periodontal disease (CPI score between 1 and 4), and periodontitis (CPI score between 3 and 4) groups. The correlation between periodontal disease and benign prostatic hyperplasia was investigated using logistic regression analyses and greedy matching case-control analysis. Subgroup analysis based on prostate volume was also performed. All analyses were conducted with SAS 9.4 software., Results: A total of 2171 males were selected for this analysis. The presence of periodontal disease significantly increased the risk of benign prostatic hyperplasia by 1.68 times (OR = 1.68, 95% CI: 1.26-2.24), and individuals with periodontitis showed a higher risk (OR = 4.18, 95% CI: 2.75-6.35). In addition, among matched cases and controls, this association remained robust (periodontal disease: OR = 1.85, 95% CI: 1.30-2.64; periodontitis: OR = 4.83, 95% CI: 2.57-9.07). Subgroup analysis revealed that periodontal disease significantly increased benign prostate hyperplasia risk as well (for prostate volume ≤ 60 g: OR = 1.64, 95% CI: 1.22-2.20; for volume > 60 g: OR = 2.17, 95% CI: 1.04-4.53), and there was a higher risk in the group with a prostate volume greater than 60 g., Conclusion: Periodontal disease is significantly and positively associated with an increased risk of benign prostatic hyperplasia. Further validation studies should be performed to explore the relationship between periodontal treatment and benign prostate hyperplasia.

Tumor necrosis factor-alpha-induced protein 3 (TNFAIP3) is a negative regulator of NF-κB activity. We previously reported that the paired tandem polymorphic dinucleotides TT > A (rs148314165, rs200820567 of TNFAIP3) conferred the risk for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in European and Korean populations. We investigated the genetic association of the TT > A variants, as well as the functional coding variant rs2230926 in exon 3 of TNFAIP3 in 1229 Chinese Han SLE patients and 1608 matched population controls. We further evaluated the role of these variants in regulating expression of the TNFAIP3 gene and NF-κB signaling pathway in their peripheral blood mononuclear cells from Chinese SLE patients. The TT > A variants and the TNFAIP3 exon 3 coding variant rs2230926 demonstrated significant associations in SLE (P TT > A  = 8.96 × 10 -12 , odds ratio [OR] = 2.07, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.68-2.55). SLE patients carrying the risk A allele showed reduced messenger RNA expression of the TNFAIP3 gene and increased expression of NF-κB1 in PBMCs. Conditional analyses revealed that the TT > A variants are likely to be causal variants in Chinese Han SLE patients. Background: This study aimed to determine the differences in clinical parameters among Han, Uygur, and Kazak men with normal glucose tolerance., Methods: Participants' data from the China National Diabetes and Metabolic Disorders Study pertaining to Han, Uygur, and Kazak men from the Xinjiang province were used (n = 930). Pearson's correlation was used to examine the relationship between HOMA-IR, Matsuda Index, and clinical characteristics., Results: HOMA-IR of Han men was significantly higher than in Uygurs and Kazaks (P < 0.001). The Matsuda Index of Kazaks was significantly higher than that of Hans and Uygurs (P < 0.001). While Kazaks had the highest BMI, WC, SBP, and DBP; they also had the highest HDL-C and lowest TG (P < 0.001). TG of Uygurs was significantly higher than that of Hans and Kazaks (P < 0.001). In Hans and Kazaks, the TG/HDL-C ratio increased with HOMA-IR quartiles; there was no association in Uygurs. In Hans and Kazaks, the TG/HDL-C ratio decreased with Matsuda index quartiles; there was no association in Uygurs. Multivariate linear regression showed that HOMA-IR was independently associated with ethnicity, BMI and TG/HDL-C ratio (P < 0.01), while Matsuda index was independently associated with ethnicity, BMI, LDL-C levels (P < 0.001) and TG/HDL-C ratio (P < 0.001)., Conclusions: In conclusion, Han, Uygur, and Kazak men had different lipid profiles, BMI, and WC. Han men had the highest insulin resistance while Kazak men had the highest insulin sensitivity.

BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to investigate the association between polymorphisms of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) gene with the risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in a Chinese Han population. MATERIAL AND METHODS A polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) assay was used to genotype 139 patients with AD and 152 healthy control individuals. The Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE) was analyzed using the chi-squared (χ²) test, and genotype and allele frequencies were compared between the two population groups, using the χ² test. The odds ratios (ORs) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated to express the degree of risk of AD resulting from polymorphisms in the EGFR gene. Linkage disequilibrium among EGFR polymorphisms was analyzed using the Haploview bioinformatics software. RESULTS The CC genotype and C allele frequencies of rs730437 were significantly lower in patients with AD compared with the controls (P=0.037), indicating that rs730437 was associated with a reduced risk of AD (CC vs. AA: OR=0.446, 95% CI=0.207-0.960) (C vs. A: OR=0.702, 95% CI=0.502-0.980). The presence of the TT genotype of rs1468727 significantly reduced the risk of AD (P=0.003; OR=0.333, 95% CI=0.160-0.691), and T allele carriers of rs1468727 had a 0.605-fold increased risk of AD. Haplotype A-C-C was significantly correlated with an increased risk of AD (OR=1.922, 95% CI=1.130-3.269). CONCLUSIONS In a Han Chinese population, EGFR gene polymorphisms, rs730437 and rs1468727 and haplotype A-C-C were shown to be possible protective factors for the development of AD.

Objective: Clinical decision making in children with heart disease relies on detailed measurements of cardiac structures using two-dimensional and M-mode echocardiography. However, no echocardiographic reference values are available for the Chinese children. We aimed to establish z-score regression equations for left heart structures in a population-based cohort of healthy Chinese Han children., Method: Echocardiography was performed in 545 children with a normal heart. The dimensions of the aortic valve annulus (AVA), aortic sinuses of Valsalva (ASV), sinotubular junction (STJ), ascending aorta (AAO), left atrium (LA), mitral valve annulus (MVA), interventricular septal end-diastolic thickness (IVSd), interventricular septal end-systolic thickness (IVSs), left ventricular end-diastolic diameter (LVIDd), left ventricular end-systolic diameter (LVIDs), left ventricular posterior wall end-diastolic thickness (LVPWd), left ventricular posterior wall end-systolic thickness (LVPWs) were measured. Regression analyses were conducted to relate the measurements of left heart structures to body surface area (BSA). Left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and left ventricular fractional shortening (LVFS) were calculated. Several models were used, and the adjusted R2 values were compared for each model., Results: AVA, ASV, STJ, AAO, LA, MVA, IVSd, IVSs, LVIDd, LVIDs, LVPWd, and LVPWs had a cubic relationship with BSA. LVEF and LVFS fell within a narrow range., Conclusions: Our results provide reference values for z scores and regression equations for left heart structures in Han Chinese children. Objective: Clinical decision making in children with congenital and acquired heart disease relies on measurements of cardiac structures using two-dimensional echocardiography. We aimed to establish z-score regression equations for right heart structures in healthy Chinese Han children., Methods: Two-dimensional and M-mode echocardiography was performed in 515 patients. We measured the dimensions of the pulmonary valve annulus (PVA), main pulmonary artery (MPA), left pulmonary artery (LPA), right pulmonary artery (RPA), right ventricular outflow tract at end-diastole (RVOTd) and at end-systole (RVOTs), tricuspid valve annulus (TVA), right ventricular inflow tract at end-diastole (RVIDd) and at end-systole (RVIDs), and right atrium (RA). Regression analyses were conducted to relate the measurements of right heart structures to 4body surface area (BSA). Right ventricular outflow-tract fractional shortening (RVOTFS) was also calculated. Several models were used, and the best model was chosen to establish a z-score calculator., Results: PVA, MPA, LPA, RPA, RVOTd, RVOTs, TVA, RVIDd, RVIDs, and RA (R 2  = 0.786, 0.705, 0.728, 0.701, 0.706, 0.824, 0.804, 0.663, 0.626, and 0.793, respectively) had a cubic polynomial relationship with BSA; specifically, measurement (M) = β0 + β1 × BSA + β2 × BSA 2  + β3 × BSA. 3 RVOTFS (0.28 ± 0.02) fell within a narrow range (0.12-0.51)., Conclusions: Our results provide reference values for z scores and regression equations for right heart structures in Han Chinese children. Hyoscyami Semen, the mature dried seed of Hyoscyamus niger L., has long been used as a traditional Chinese medicine to treat human diseases. Hyoscyami Semen is found in local markets in China. In markets, sellers and buyers commonly inadvertently mix the seeds of H. niger with the seeds of related species such as Hygrophila salicifolia (Vahl) Nees, Astragalus complanatus R. Br., Cuscuta australis R. Br., Cuscuta chinensis Lam., and Impatiens balsamina L. because of their similar morphologies or similar names. Thus, developing a reliable method for discriminating H. niger seeds from its adulterants is necessary to reduce confusion and ensure the safe use of Hyoscyami Semen. The present study was designed to evaluate the efficiency of high-resolution melting analysis combined with DNA barcoding (Bar-HRM) with internal transcribed spacer 2 to discriminate H. niger. Our results show that Bar-HRM successfully identified the adulterants and detected the proportion of H. niger DNA extract within an admixture. In particular, HRM detected H. niger DNA extract in A. complanatus DNA extract at concentrations as low as 1%. In conclusion, the Bar-HRM method developed in the present study for authenticating H. niger is rapid and cost-effective. Background and Aims: To evaluate the association between vitamin D receptor (VDR) BsmI, FokI, TaqI and ApaI gene polymorphisms and the risk of end-stage renal disease (ESRD)., Methods: All eligible studies were included in our meta-analysis of a search of the PubMed, Cochrane and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) databases according to predefined criteria. The fixed-effects or random-effects models were used to calculate the pooled odds ratio (OR) and corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI)., Results: Thirteen studies including 1510 patients and 1812 controls were recruited for the analysis of the association between the VDR BsmI, FokI, TaqI and ApaI gene polymorphisms and the risk of ESRD.VDR BsmI B allele, BB genotype and bb genotype, FokI F allele, FF genotype and ff genotype, TaqI T allele, TT genotype and tt genotype, ApaI A allele, AA genotype and aa genotype were not associated with ESRD susceptibility for overall populations, Asians and Caucasians., Conclusions: Results from the current study suggest that VDR BsmI, FokI, TaqI and ApaI gene polymorphisms are not associated with the risk of ESRD in the overall populations, Asians and Caucasians. To explore a new method to identify Moutan Cortex to guarantee its safe use, internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) sequence was used to identify Moutan Cortex and its adulterants. DNA was extracted and target fragments were amplified. Sequences were analyzed and assembled by CodonCode Aligner V3.7.1. Genetic distances were computed and phylogenetic tree was constructed based on kimura 2-parameter (K2P) model by MEGA 5.0. The length of the 20 ITS2 sequences of Moutan Cortex from nine different places is 227 bp, and no variation site was detected. The maximum inter-specificK2P distance of Moutan Cortex is 0, the minimum intra-specific K2P distance is 0.041, the average intra-specific K2P distance is 0.222. According to NJ analysis, Moutan Cortex from different places can get together as one branch with bootstrap support values 99%, which indicates Moutan Cortex can be easily distinguished from its adulterants. Using ITS2 sequence can accurately identify Moutan Cortex and its adulterants, it is an effective supplementary to traditional identification methods.

Objective: To compare insulin secretion and action with impaired fasting glucose (IFG), impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and combined glucose intolerance (CGI, IFG and IGT) between Han and Uygur populations living in Xinjiang., Methods: A multicenter cross-section survey (The Third Diabetes Epidemiological Survey in China) was conducted in Xinjiang from 2007 to 2008 including 2203 subjects (Han 1118, Uygur 1085) underwent an oral glucose test (OGTT). Homeostasis model assessment on insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and β cell function (HOMA-β) were calculated. The ratio of incremental insulin (ΔI30) and glucose (ΔG30) response was used to evaluate the early insulin secretion. ΔI30/ΔG30/HOMA-IR was used to evaluate the glucose disposition index (DI)., Results: There were differences noticed regarding the waist circumstances (WC), body mass index (BMI), lipids, 0 and 120 min insulin levels in different glucose tolerance status between the Hans and Uygurs. Data related to NGT, IFG, CGI, WC from the Uygurs was significantly different from that of the Hans (P < 0.01), while the NGT, IFG, IGT and 120-minute plasma insulin levels of the Hans were significantly different from that of the Uygurs (P < 0.01). HOMA-IR and HOMA-β in Hans were significantly different from those of the Uygurs (P < 0.01). There were significant differences noticed on data related to ΔI30/ΔG30, and DI among the two populations with different ethnicities., Conclusion: Regarding the regulation of impaired glucose, the insulin resistance among the Hans was significantly different from that of the Uygurs, while there seemed to be a compensatory secretion of pancreatic β cells which played the role of maintaining blood glucose homeostasis.
