The concept of "enterotypes" in microbiome research has attracted substantial interest, particularly focusing on the abundance of Prevotella spp. in the human gut. In this study, the intricate dynamics of Prevotella spp. in the human gut microbiota was investigated, based on the metagenomic method. First, 239 fecal samples from individuals across four regions of China revealed a bimodal distribution, highlighting the abundance and variability in Prevotella spp. within the Chinese population. Second, the longitudinal cohort study included 184 fecal samples from 52 time points collected from seven individuals who demonstrated either the outbreaks or disappearances of Prevotella spp., emphasizing the transient nature of Prevotella abundance levels and suggesting shifts in Prevotella "enterotypes." Furthermore, a turnover of the dominant Prevotella spp. was observed, indicating the potential presence of diverse subtypes of Prevotella enterotype. Notably, the genomic analysis demonstrated the persistence of specific Prevotella strains within individuals over extended periods, highlighting the enduring presence of Prevotella in the human gut. In conclusion, by integrating the temporal and geographical scales in our research, we gained deeper insights into the dynamics of Prevotella, emphasizing the importance of considering the dynamics at the time and species level in gut microbiota studies and their implications on human health. Introduction: Fengxiangxing Huairang Daqu (FHD) is one of the major types of Daqu in China. However, the relationship between the microbial community structure at different stages, the changes in the sensory characteristics, fermentation characteristics, volatiles, the most critical process point, and the quality formation of FHD is not clear. Methods: Based on microscopic characterization, PacBio SMRT sequencing, and HS-SPME-GC-MS volatile metabolite analysis revealed the relationship between FHD quality formation and the dynamics of Qupi. Results: The results showed that the 12th day of the culture was the most critical process point, highlighting the most significant differences in microbial community structure, sensory characteristics, fermentation characteristics, and flavor substances. Bacillus licheniformis (43.25%), Saccharopolyspora rectivirgula (35.05%), Thermoascus aurantiacus (76.51%), Aspergillus amstelodami (10.81%), and Saccharomycopsis fibuligera (8.88%) were the dominant species in FHD. S. fibuligera, A. amstelodami, and T. aurantiacus were associated with the snow-white color of the FHD epidermis, the yellow color of the interior, and the gray-white color, respectively. The abundance of T. aurantiacus, A. amstelodami, B. licheniformis, and S. rectivirgula was positively associated with the esterifying power and liquefying power of FHD. The abundance of T. aurantiacus and A. amstelodami was positively correlated with the saccharifying power of FHD. The abundance of S. fibuligera was positively related to the fermenting power of FHD. A total of 248 volatiles were detected in Qupi, mainly including alcohols, esters, aldehydes, and ketones. Of them, eleven volatiles had a significant effect on the flavor of Qupi, such as 1-butanol-3-methyl-, hydrazinecarboxamide, ethanol, phenylethyl alcohol, ethyl acetate, 2-octanone, 1-octen-3-ol, formic acid-hexyl ester, (E)-2-octen-1-ol, ethyl hexanoate, and 2(3H)-furanone-dihydro-5-pentyl-. The abundance of B. licheniformis, S. rectivirgula, T. aurantiacus, and S. fibuligera was positively correlated with the alcohols, aromatic compounds, and phenols in FHD. The abundance of S. fibuligera was positively correlated with the acids, esters, and hydrocarbons in FHD. Discussion: These results indicate important theoretical basis and technical support for controllable adjustment of FHD microbial community structure, stable control of FHD quality, and precise, effective, and large-scale guidance of FHD production. Background: Patients with carotid atherosclerotic stenosis (CAS) often have varying degrees of cognitive decline. However, there is little evidence regarding how brain morphological and functional abnormalities impact the cognitive decline in CAS patients. This study aimed to determine how the brain morphological and functional changes affected the cognitive decline in patients with CAS. Methods: The brain morphological differences were analyzed using surface and voxel-based morphometry, and the seed-based whole-brain functional connectivity (FC) abnormalities were analyzed using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging. Further, mediation analyses were performed to determine whether and how morphological and FC changes affect cognition in CAS patients. Results: The CAS-MCI (CAS patients with mild cognitive impairment) group performed worse in working memory, verbal fluency, and executive time. Cortical thickness (CT) of the left postcentral and superiorparietal were significantly reduced in CAS-MCI patients. The gray matter volume (GMV) of the right olfactory, left temporal pole (superior temporal gyrus) (TPOsup.L), left middle temporal gyrus (MTG.L), and left insula (INS.L) were decreased in the CAS-MCI group. Besides, decreased seed-based FC between TPOsup.L and left precuneus, between MTG.L and TPOsup.L, and between INS.L and MTG.L, left middle frontal gyrus, as well as Superior frontal gyrus, were found in CAS-MCI patients. Mediation analyses demonstrated that morphological and functional abnormalities fully mediated the association between the maximum degree of carotid stenosis and cognitive function. Conclusion: Multiple brain regions have decreased GMV and CT in CAS-MCI patients, along with disrupted seed-based FC. The effectiveness of national policies for air pollution control has been demonstrated, but the relative effectiveness of short-term emission reduction measures in comparison with national policies has not. Here we show that short-term abatement measures during important international events substantially reduced PM2.5 concentrations, but air quality rebounded to pre-event levels after the measures ceased. Long-term adherence to strict emission reduction policies led to successful decreases of 54% in PM2.5 concentrations in Beijing, and 23% in atmospheric nitrogen deposition in China from 2012 to 2020. Incentivized by "blue skies" type campaigns, economic development and reactive nitrogen pollution are quickly decoupled, showing that a combination of inspiring but aggressive short-term measures and effective but durable long-term policies delivers sustainable air quality improvement. However, increased ammonia concentrations, transboundary pollutant flows, and the complexity to achieving reduction targets under climate change scenarios, underscore the need for the synergistic control of multiple pollutants and inter-regional action. In response to the rebound of air pollution during large events in China, the authors propose that a combination of ambitious short-term measures and enduring long-term pollution control policies is a sustainable solution for improving air quality. Background: Triglyceride glucose (TyG) and TyG-body mass index (TyG-BMI) are reliable surrogate indices of insulin resistance and used for risk stratification and outcome prediction in patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Here, we inserted estimated average glucose (eAG) into the TyG (TyAG) and TyG-BMI (TyAG-BMI) as derived parameters and explored their clinical significance in cardiovascular risk prediction. Methods: This was a population-based cohort study of 9,944 Chinese patients with ASCVD. The baseline admission fasting glucose and A1C-derived eAG values were recorded. Cardiovascular events (CVEs) that occurred during an average of 38.5 months of follow-up were recorded. We stratified the patients into four groups by quartiles of the parameters. Baseline data and outcomes were analyzed. Results: Distribution of the TyAG and TyAG-BMI indices shifted slightly toward higher values (the right side) compared with TyG and TyG-BMI, respectively. The baseline levels of cardiovascular risk factors and coronary severity increased with quartile of TyG, TyAG, TyG-BMI, and TyAG-BMI (all P<0.001). The multivariate-adjusted hazard ratios for CVEs when the highest and lowest quartiles were compared from low to high were 1.02 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.77 to 1.36; TyG), 1.29 (95% CI, 0.97 to 1.73; TyAG), 1.59 (95% CI, 1.01 to 2.58; TyG-BMI), and 1.91 (95% CI, 1.16 to 3.15; TyAG-BMI). The latter two showed statistical significance. Conclusion: This study suggests that TyAG and TyAG-BMI exhibit more information than TyG and TyG-BMI in disease progression among patients with ASCVD. Elevated atmospheric reactive nitrogen (Nr) emissions and the subsequent nitrogen (N) deposition have negatively impacted the global environment, particularly in China. In order to assess the long-term trends in atmospheric N deposition in the south of China, Taojiang County in Hunan Province was selected as a representative rural area for study. We analyzed interannual variation in atmospheric Nr, including gaseous ammonia (NH3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), nitrate acid (HNO3) vapor, particulate ammonium (NH4+), and nitrate (NO3−) in air and NH4+-N and NO3−-N in precipitation from 2011 to 2020. The 10-year average atmospheric wet-plus-dry N deposition was 41.9 kg N ha−1 yr−1, which decreased by approximately 24% after 2012, indicating that NH3 and NOx emissions were effectively reduced by emission controls introduced in 2013. Wet deposition accounted for approximately 74% of the total N deposition and was significantly influenced by annual precipitation amount. Reduced N (NH3, pNH4+, and NH4+ in rainwater) was the dominant form, comprising approximately 58% of the total N deposition, while oxidized N (pNO3−, NO2, HNO3, and NO3− in rainwater) accounted for 42% of the total N deposition. Atmospheric HNO3, NO2, and NH3 concentrations and deposition declined by 30–80% over the decade, while particulate NH4+ and NO3− concentrations and deposition remained at relatively stable levels, which suggests that ongoing research and policy should focus on rural particulate pollution. Future strategies must concentrate on the integrated control of NH3 and NOx emissions to mitigate air pollution and protect human health, particularly in rural areas because current abatement efforts are primarily directed toward urban areas and the industrial sector, whereas non-point source NH3 pollution, influenced mainly by agricultural activities, dominates in rural regions. This paper examines the international spillover effects of China's government spending using the Bayesian technique based on a monthly dataset covering China, the world economy and the G7. The split-sample analysis shows that China's government spending had a significant positive spillover effect on the world economy after 2008, while the effect was moderately negative before 2008. The trade channel plays a dominant role in the international propagation of China's government spending shock and could explain the changes in spillover effects. Phellodendron chinense is an extraordinary medicinal plant, and its stem bark is a famous traditional Chinese medicine in China, containing a number of phytochemicals with biological and pharmacological functions. Studies have shown that the medicinal ingredients in P. chinense from various regions are different, as soil types might be important factors affecting the growth and quality of P. chinense. In this study, the effects of acidic purple soil, alkaline purple soil, yellow soil and red soil on the growth, nutrient element accumulation and partitioning in P. chinense seedlings were studied. Our results showed that the biomass of leaves and stems in acidic purple soil was significantly higher than in other soils, and the root biomass was significantly lower than that in yellow soil. C, N, P and Ca contents cultured in acidic purple soil were the highest compared to other soils, and K and Mg content were the highest in yellow soil and red soil, respectively. The distribution of carbon between different organs can reflect environmental stress. N has become a limiting factor for the growth and development of P. chinense seedlings. C:N and C:P ratios in the leaves were significantly lower than those in the stem and roots. Among four soil types, the highest N:P ratio was 1.65 in P. chinense seedlings. These results suggest that four soil types may significantly affect the accumulation and distribution of biomass and nutrient elements in P. chinense seedlings. The characteristic patterns in different organs have different responses. Acidic purple soil is more suitable for the growth of P. chinense. These findings will help to understand the distribution characteristics and requirements of nutrient elements in P. chinense seedlings, and further provide a theoretical basis and reference for site selection and cultivation strategy. Chinese fir is one of the most widely distributed and extensively planted timber species in China. Therefore, monitoring pests and diseases in Chinese fir plantations is directly related to national timber forest security and forest ecological security. This study aimed to identify appropriate vegetation indices for the early monitoring of pests and diseases in Chinese fir plantations. For this purpose, the researchers used an imaging spectrometer to capture hyperspectral images of both experimental and control groups. The experimental group consisted of Chinese fir trees with two sections of bark stripped off, while the control group consisted of healthy Chinese fir trees. The study then assessed the sensitivity of 11 vegetation indices to the physiological differences between the two groups using the Mann–Whitney U test. The results showed that both the green-to-red region spectral angle index (GRRSGI) and the red edge position index (REP) were able to monitor the difference as early as 16 days after damage. However, GRRSGI performs best in monitoring early death changes in Chinese fir trees because it is less affected by noise and is more stable. The green–red spectral area index (GRSAI) also had high stability, but the monitoring effect was slightly worse than that of GRRSGI and REP. The Maocun underground karst river system in the peak cluster depression is an important source of groundwater in southwest China. Multitracers and high resolution water‐level‐monitoring technology were used to assess and evaluate the hydrogeological structure and flow dynamics. The results showed that the spatial geological structures of the sites had high heterogeneity. Scatter plots of environmental tracers divided the sampling points into groups under different water flow patterns. The karstification was found to increase from sites XLB and LLS to sites BY, SGY and BDP to sites CY and DYQ, where the main water flow patterns at these site groups were diffuse water, both diffuse water and conduit water, and conduit water, respectively. The response times of the subsystems were found to be influenced by the spatial structure, the degree of karstification, and the volume of precipitation and frequency. The average response times of SGY, BDP, ZK, and Outlet in the selected precipitation scenarios were 5.17, 4.08, 16.42, and 5.83 h, respectively. In addition, the EC, δ13CDIC, 222Rn, and δ18O exhibited both linear or exponential relationships. Overall, three hydrogeological conceptual models were constructed showing: (1) high precipitation driving the deep water, resulting in a concentrated flow regime and regional groundwater flow field; (2) both concentrated and diffuse water flows existing under moderate precipitation, resulting in mixed water flow field; (3) the water cycle in the shallow karst aquifer system under low precipitation causing the local groundwater flow field to be dominated by diffuse water flow. Objective: The problems and challenges encountered by Chinese medical institutions in implementing the national centralized drug procurement was investigated and analyzed in order to provide reference for the regulatory agencies to formulate policies. Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted to collect the problems encountered by 329 Chinese medical institutions in implementing the national centralized drug procurement and the corresponding suggestions provided by relevant experts. Statistical analysis was performed to identify differences in the themes and the number of collected problems, further revealing the relevance to the region in which the medical institutions is located. Result: 1360 problems and suggestions were collected from 329 Chinese medical institutions that located in North (19.15%), Northeast (5.78%), East (33.43%), Central (10.03%), South (9.73%), Southwest (14.89%), and Northwest China (6.99%). There was statistically significant difference in the number of collected problems and suggestions between regions (p < 0.001). Furthermore, the content of gathered problems and suggestions involves in 15 themes including system construction, organizational system and work responsibilities, reasonable measurement and reporting of procurement volume et al. These themes that these medical institutions are focusing on are mainly centered on the supply guarantee (15%), reasonable measurement and reporting of procurement volume (11.40%) and guarantee measures for clinical priority use (9.48%) of drugs with national centralized procurement. Meanwhile, we found that problems regarding the supply guarantee of drugs with national centralized procurement displayed significant difference between regions (p = 0.0096). Conclusion: Chinese medical institutions are facing great challenges in implementing the national centralized drug procurement. The scientific study and judgment of the current situation and the construction of corresponding solution require a precise classification of the problems encountered by medical institutions in the process of implementing the national centralized drug procurement policy, which is of great practical significance for deepening the reform of the medical and health system. Introduction: While the rapid advancement of urbanization has driven the improvement of material living standards, it has also brought about rapid social changes and intensified competition. In this "involutive" environment characterized by highly competitive and strong pressure, urban residents tend to fall into a state of "mental exhaustion." Anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, and other mental illnesses have seriously threatened public health in Chinese cities. Support from social relations is crucial for enhancing residents' subjective well-being (SWB) and promoting their mental health, especially in China's highly contextualized collectivist culture. Methods: According to the social structure of China's "difference sequence pattern," this paper constructs a theoretical framework of the relationship between social relations and SWB based on the convoy model and uses CGSS2018 data to verify the applicability of the theoretical framework. Results: Kinship and friendship positively relate to SWB, and their interaction effect is significantly negative. There is no necessary correlation between neighborhood and SWB. The relationship between social relations and SWB of different age groups is heterogeneous. In addition, the moderating effects of relative income and social class are significantly negative. Discussion: Kinship and friendship are Chinese urban residents' SWB convoys, and these two factors have an obvious substitution effect. The neighborhood has withdrawn from the convoy orbit of Chinese urban residents' SWB, which may be related to neighborhood indifference caused by China's housing system reform. From the life course perspective, the SWB convoys of young and middle-aged groups consist of kinship and friendship, while those of elderly people include kinship and neighborhood. In addition, for poor individuals living at the bottom of society, support from kinship is the most important source of social capital. Cercis chinensis Bunge (C. chinensis), well known as an ornamental plant widely distributed in China, and its flowers, bark, fruit, etc., have multiple bioactivities. However, reports on the changes in mineral elements, nutrient composition and antioxidant activity in C. chinensis flower at different development stages are rare. In this study, the flower samples were collected every 20 days from March 2023 to May 2023. The changes in carbon (C), nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P), soluble protein (SP), amino acid (AA), non-structural carbohydrate (NSC), total phenol (TP) and total flavonoids (TF) content as well as antioxidant activity in C. chinensis flower at different development stages were investigated. The results suggested that C, N, and P content, the C:N:P stoichiometric ratio, NSC contents, SP, AA, TP, TF and antioxidant activity of flower showed large variations at three development stages. This study found that C and P contents showed a significant decrease with the development and opening of flowers, while N content showed an opposite trend. The soluble protein content first decreased and then increased. The amino acid content, total polyphenol content, and total flavonoid content all showed a significant downward trend, while the content of NSC increased. Both ABTS and ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) showed significant decreases at various developmental stages, but DPPH was completely opposite. The highest NSC content and DPPH activity were observed at stage III, but the highest AA, TP, TF, as well ABTS and FRAP activity wereobserved at stage I. These findings will improve understanding of the requirements and dynamic balance among C, N, and P, NSC and nutrient contents as well as antioxidant activity of C. chinensis flowers in response to development stages. Passive daytime radiative cooling (PDRC) is a promising strategy to realize surface cooling of objects without any external energy consumption. While such materials typically exhibit dazzling white appearances, developing pleasingly looking colored radiative cooling materials is greatly significant but remains an arduous challenge. Herein, self-standing, flexible colored films available on both sides are prepared by using a facile and scalable strategy. The films are asymmetrically designed. One side is SiO2-filled porous structure with highly reflective pigment distributed that can selectively reflect solar light to generate specific color, and the other side is hierarchically porous three-phase composite with less SiO2, which maximizes the solar reflection. The breathable film achieves a relatively high near infrared reflectance on the colored side (up to 89%), and a broadband solar reflectance on the reverse side. Moreover, both sides exhibit extremely high mid-infrared emissivity (98%) allowing significant radiative heat loss. With the diverse but efficient reflectance and emittance, different sides of three colored films yield temperature drops ranging from 2.0 to 11.1 °C during daytime. Building energy simulation indicates that 655 MJm-2 energy can be saved over the whole summer if the dual-sided available colored film is deployed in China. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Our first record of the rare and scatteredly distributed Ixeridium sagittarioides for Guizhou, China, triggered a study to assess its systematic position. The species was placed in four different genera in the course of its taxonomic history and was recently treated with doubts as a member of Ixeridium in the Flora of China. Comparative morphological investigation and phylogenetic analyses based on the nuclear ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer (nrITS) and five non-coding plastid DNA regions (petD region, psbA-trnH, trnL-trnF, rpl32-trnL(UAG) and 5´rps16-trnQ(UUG) spacers) provided evidence that the species is not a member of Ixeridium and the Crepidinae but has evolved by ancient hybridisation of members of the Lactuca alliance (Lactucinae). Vegetation restoration has become a common practice in karst rocky desertification (KRD) areas of southwestern China. The bacteria, which have made a connection between soil and plants, have been an important role in regulating the succession and restoration of karst vegetation. However, it is still unclear how soil bacterial communities and soil properties respond to natural vegetation restoration processes in karst areas. To address this gap, we investigated the soil nutrients, enzyme activity, and soil bacterial community among various plant communities, including farmland (FL), land with herbs only (SSI), herb-andshrub land (SSII), woody thickets (SSIII), coniferous forest (SSIV), coniferous and broad-leaved mixed forest (SSV), and evergreen broad-leaved forest (SSVI). Our results found that SSII had the highest levels of soil organic matter, total nitrogen, available phosphorus, available nitrogen, sucrase, and ß-glucosidase among all the plant communities. These results indicated that herb-and-shrub land have contributed to the rapid restoration of vegetation in KRD regions. FL exhibited the lowest levels of soil nutrients and enzyme activities, while showing the highest bacterial richness and diversity among all the plant communities. This suggested that appropriate human intervention can increase bacterial diversity and richness in the area. The predominant bacterial phylum also varied among the different plant communities, with Actinobacteria being the most abundant in SSI, SSII, SSIII, and SSIV, while Proteobacteria were the most abundant in SSV and SSVI. Furthermore, PCoA analysis demonstrated significant changes in the soil bacterial community structure, with SSI, SSII, SSIII, and SSIV had shared similar structures, while SSV and SSVI had comparable structures. As for soil characteristics, total phosphorus (TP) and total potassium (TK) were the primary factors affecting the soil bacterial community. SSV and SSVI had the most complex bacterial networks and were more stable than other groups. The genera Ktedonobacter, norank_f_ Anaerolineaceae, and Vicinamibacter had the highest betweenness centrality scores and were identified as keystone genera in the co-occurrence network in KRD areas. Depression is the most prevalent psychiatric disorder, which needs deeper mechanism research studies and effective therapy. Zi-Shui-Qing-Gan-Yin (ZSQGY) is a traditional Chinese medicine decoction that has been widely used in China in the treatment of depressive symptoms. The aim of the study was to examine the anti-depressive effects of ZSQGY and the possible mechanism of action in the monosodium glutamate (MSG)-induced depressive model and the corticosterone (CORT)-induced PC12 cell model. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) was performed to determine the major compounds in the water extract of ZSQGY. The depressive behaviors were evaluated by the field swimming test (FST), the sucrose preference test (SPT), and the open field test (OFT). Golgi staining and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were performed to display the alterations of synaptic ultrastructure. The mitochondrion function and inflammatory factors were also quantified. The changes in peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ co-activator 1α (PGC-1α) expression were evaluated. The results of this study demonstrated that ZSQGY significantly improved depressive behaviors. ZSQGY also reversed the changes in synaptic plasticity, improved mitochondrion function, and reduced the levels of inflammatory factors. The neuroprotective effects were accompanied by the increased expression of PGC-1α. However, the beneficial changes were reversed after the inhibition of PGC-1α. These results indicated that ZSQGY effectively could improve depressive behaviors via the mechanisms that regulate synaptic structural plasticity, improve mitochondrion function, and alleviate neuroinflammation, which could, or partly, attribute to the regulation of PGC-1α. Background and Aims: Colonoscopy is an important colorectal cancer (CRC) screening modality; however, not all high-risk groups identified by fecal immunochemical test (FIT) and/or high-risk factor questionnaire (HRFQ) undergo colonoscopy in time. The impact of delays in colonoscopy on CRC detection among high-risk populations remains poorly understood, warranting further clarification. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted among CRC high-risk population identified by Tianjin CRC screening program. According to the colonoscopy results after HRFQ and FIT, patients were classified into CRC, advanced adenoma, non-advanced adenoma, and normal groups. The time interval between CRC screening and colonoscopy was investigated and its relationship with colonoscopy results. Logistic regression was performed to explore the risk factors of CRC detection. Results: Among the high-risk population without a history of CRC or polyps, 49,810 underwent HRFQ, FIT, and colonoscopy, and a time interval of fewer than 6 months was found for 79.56% of patients (n = 39,630). People with positive FIT were more likely to undergo colonoscopy within 6 months, and detection rates of CRC and/or advanced adenoma were positively related to time intervals. Similar results were found in people with a negative FIT but positive HRFQ. A time interval longer than 6 months was a significant predictor of CRC detection in high-risk populations. Conclusion: For high-risk people identified by CRC screening, especially those with a positive FIT, a time interval of 6 months was associated with an increased probability of CRC detection. The non-point source pollution is not easy to be controlled, and it is one of the important environmental problems facing the world. Taking Hohhot, a typical city in the arid semi-arid region in China, as an example, four monitoring sites in the city were selected, water samples from six rainfall events were collected, and pollutants such as heavy metals, ammonia, nitrate nitrogen, phosphorus and suspended matter were examined, and the water quality of the rain runoff was comprehensively evaluated by the principal component analysis and the correlation analysis. The results showed that the total phosphorus contents of monitoring points in the street were the largest and those of monitoring points in gas stations were the smallest in rainfall runoff. Arsenic, cobalt, and chromium were less than the Class I standard for environmental quality standards for surface water according to Chinese standard (GB 3838-2002). Concentrations of cadmium, copper, and iron were greatest in street monitoring sites, while nickel, lead, and zinc were greatest in roof monitoring sites, and manganese was greatest in car park monitoring sites. There was minimal contamination at gas station monitoring sites and the greatest contamination at street monitoring sites. Heavy metals and phosphorus were the main contributing factors to pollution at street monitoring sites, while the main contributing factors at gas station monitoring sites were total suspended substances. The volatilization of ammonia (NH 3) from fertilizer application and livestock wastes is an overwhelmingly important pathway of nitrogen losses in agricultural ecosystems and constitutes the largest source of atmospheric NH 3. The volatilization of NH 3 highly depends on environmental and meteorological conditions, however, this phenomenon is poorly described in current emission inventory and atmospheric models. Here, we develop a dynamic NH 3 emission model capable of calculating the NH 3 emission rate interactively with temporal- and spatial-varying meteorological and soil conditions. The NH 3 flux parameterization relies on several meteorological factors and anthropogenic activity including fertilizer application, livestock waste, traffic, residential, and industrial sectors. The model is then embedded into a regional WRF–Chem model and is evaluated against field measurements of NH 3 concentrations, emission flux, and satellite retrievals of column loading. The evaluation shows a substantial improvement in the model performance of NH 3 flux and ambient concentration in China. The model represents the spatial and temporal variations of ambient NH 3 concentration well, indicating the highest emission in the North China Plain (NCP) and Sichuan Basin, especially during summertime. Compared with normal simulations using fixed emission inventory input, this model features superior capability in simulating NH 3 emission flux and concentration during drastic weather changes like frontal activities and precipitation. Such advances in emission quantification also improve the model performance of secondary inorganic aerosol on synoptic scales. While more laboratory and field measurements are still needed for better parameterization of NH 3 volatilization, the seamless coupling of soil emission with meteorology provides a better understanding of NH 3 emission evolution and its contribution to atmospheric chemistry. Background Published guidelines on decision-making and resuscitation of extremely preterm infants primarily focus on high-income countries. For rapidly industrializing ones like China, there is a lack of population-based data for informing prenatal management and practice guidelines. Methods The Sino-northern Neonatal Network conducted a prospective multi-centre cohort study between 1 January 2018 and 31 December 2021. Infants with a gestational age (GA) between 22 (postnatal age in days = 0) and 28 (postnatal age in days = 6) admitted to 40 tertiary NICUs in northern China were included and evaluated for death or severe neurological injury before discharge. Results For all extremely preterm infants (n = 5838), the proportion of admission to the neonatal was 4.1% at 22-24 weeks, 27.2% at 25-26 weeks, and 75.2% at 27 and 28 weeks. Among 2228 infants admitted to the NICU, 216 (11.1%) were still elected for withdrawal of care (WIC) due to non-medical factors. Survival rates without severe neurological injury were 6.7% for infants at 22-23 weeks, 28.0% at 24 weeks, 56.7% at 24 weeks, 61.7% at 25 weeks, 79.9% at 26 weeks, and 84.5% at 27 and 28 weeks. Compared with traditional criterion at 28 weeks, the relative risk for death or severe neurological injury were 1.53 (95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.26-1.86) at 27 weeks, 2.32 (95% CI = 1.73-3.11) at 26 weeks, 3.62 (95% CI = 2.43-5.40) at 25 weeks, and 8.91 (95% CI = 4.69-16.96) at 24 weeks. The NICUs with higher proportion of WIC also had a higher rate of death or severe neurological injury after maximal intensive care (MIC). Conclusions Compared to the traditional threshold of 28 weeks, more infants received MIC after 25 weeks, leading to significant increases in survival rates without severe neurological injury. Globally, soil is one of the largest terrestrial carbon reservoirs, with soil organic carbon (SOC) regulating overall soil carbon dynamics. Robust quantification of SOC stocks in existing global observation-based estimates avails accurate predictions in carbon climate feedbacks and future climate trends. In this study, we investigated global and regional SOC estimates, based on five widely used global gridded SOC datasets (HWSD, WISE30sec, GSDE, SoilGrids250m, and GSOCmap), a regional permafrost dataset from Mishra et al. (UM2021), and a global-scale soil profile database (the World 15 Soil Information Service soil profile database, WoSIS) reporting measurements of a series physical and chemical edaphic attributes. Our comparative analyses show that the magnitude and distribution of SOC varies widely among datasets, with certain datasets showing region-specific robustness. At the global scale, the magnitude of SOC stocks simulated by GSDE, GSOCmap, and WISE30sec are comparable, while estimates of SoilGrids250m and HWSD are at the upper and lower ends, respectively. Global SOC stocks ranged from 577-1171 Pg C and 1086-2678 Pg C at 0-30 cm and 0-100 cm depth. The spatial 20 distribution of SOC stocks varies greatly among datasets, especially in the northern circumpolar and Tibetan Plateau permafrost regions. In general, the UM2021 and WISE30sec perform better in the northern circumpolar permafrost regions, and GSDE performs better in China. SOC stocks estimated by different datasets also show large variabilities across different soil layers and biomes. Overall, GSOCmap performs well at 0-30 cm depth, while SoilGrids250m and GSDE perform better at multiple depths. Among the five gridded global datasets, SoilGrids250m exhibits a more consistent spatial pattern and depth distribution 25 with WoSIS. Large uncertainties in existing global gridded SOC estimates are generally derived from soil sampling density, diverse sources and mapping methods for soil datasets. We call for future efforts for standardizing soil sampling efforts, cross-dataset comparison, proper validation, and overall global collaboration to improve SOC estimates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Treatments for patients with early-stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) include liver transplantation (LT), liver resection (LR), radiofrequency ablation (RFA), and microwave ablation (MWA), are critical for their long-term survival. However, a computational model predicting treatment-independent prognosis of patients with HCC, such as overall survival (OS) and recurrence-free survival (RFS), is yet to be developed, to our best knowledge. The goal of this study is to identify prognostic factors associated with OS and RFS in patients with HCC and develop nomograms to predict them, respectively. Methods: We retrospectively retrieved 730 patients with HCC from three hospitals in China and followed them up for 3 and 5 years after invasive treatment. All enrolled patients were randomly divided into the training cohort and the validation cohort with a 7:3 ratio, respectively. Independent prognostic factors associated with OS and RFS were determined by the multivariate Cox regression analysis. Two nomogram prognostic models were built and evaluated by concordance index (C-index), calibration curves, area under the receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve, time-dependent area under the ROC curve (AUC), the Kaplan-Meier survival curve, and decision curve analyses (DCAs), respectively. Results: Prognostic factors for OS and RFS were identified, and nomograms were successfully built. Calibration discrimination was good for both the OS and RFS nomogram prediction models (C-index: 0.750 and 0.746, respectively). For both nomograms, the AUC demonstrated outstanding predictive performance; the DCA shows that the model has good decision ability; and the calibration curve demonstrated strong predictive power. The nomograms successfully discriminated high-risk and low-risk patients with HCC associated with OS and RFS. Conclusions: We developed nomogram survival prediction models to predict the prognosis of HCC after invasive treatment with acceptable accuracies in both training and independent testing cohorts. This study evaluated the spatial variability of hydraulic conductivity (K) along the Han River watershed in the Jianghan Plain (China) by using different geostatistical methods. The K distribution was estimated from 58 borehole measurements, and co-kriging estimates were obtained by incorporating 287 electrical resistivity (ρ) and 260 hydraulic gradient (I) values as auxiliary data. Additionally, 2,980 lithology samples were classified into three hydrofacies units in terms of decreasing K, which was simulated accordingly. The results indicate that the highest K values are in the western part of Shahu town and near the Yangtze River. The trend continues to diminish across western and northern Xiantao town and north-west of Xingou town, as well as across the transition zone from highland to lowland (from Shayang town to Zhanggang town). The low K values occur from the northern part of Jiukou town to Shayang town, and around Xingou town, and then are scattered around the high K values, with the lowest K values distributed in the north-west of the study area (from the catchment margin to the north of Shayang town), in Yanglinwei town, and east of Shahu town. As for the geostatistical methods, co-kriging estimates based on ρ and I highlight the variability of K, with the latter providing more realistic results. The three-dimensional hydrofacies model realistically represents the spatial distributions of K in the Quaternary aquifer system. Mud pumping is a major problem for high-speed rail (HSR) slab tracks because it can cause deterioration of track alignment and further compromise operation safety and ride comfort of passengers. Timely inspection for mud pumping is crucial to the operational safety of high-speed rail networks. This paper proposes a novel detection method for mud pumping defects based on the measurement data of track geometry. The time and frequency features of the surface irregularity signal corresponding to the mud pumping sites were first analyzed. The concave anomalies reflecting the features of mud pumping and the peaks at the wavelength of 5 m and its octave on the power spectrum density (PSD) curve were revealed. On this basis, to automatically detect mud pumping defects, a multiscale signal decomposition method was employed and defect-sensitive features were extracted. A mud pumping index (MPI) indicating the severity of mud pumping was then established, and a three-level management scheme for mud pumping maintenance was developed accordingly. The performance of the proposed detection method was verified against visual inspection recorded on an in-service HSR line, which was constructed with the China Railway Track System (CRTS) I slab track. The results show that the proposed detection method can effectively locate and assess the mud pumping defects with acceptable accuracy for HSR track maintenance needs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To study the differences between the serum metabolites in patients with adenomatous polyps of the colon and yang-deficiency constitution and those without colon polyps and with balanced constitution, and look for biomarkers that can be used to distinguish between the two groups. Methods: General patient information was gathered, and Chinese medicine constitution were collected in 940 patients who underwent electronic colonoscopy. A total of 119 patients with adenomatous polyps of the colon and yang-deficiency constitution were included in the experimental group, and 150 patients without colon polyps and with balanced constitution were included in the control group. Metabolomics analysis was performed on the fasting venous blood obtained from each patient in both groups. Principal component analysis and orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis were performed on the detection results, potential biomarkers were screened, metabolic pathway changes were determined, and the metabolic processes involved were discussed. Results: A total of 59 differential biomarkers between the experimental group and the control group were identified. The differential metabolites were found mainly in the glycerophospholipid metabolism pathway, and the bile acid 3-oxo-4,6-choladienoic acid was the biomarker that distinguished the experimental group from the control group. Conclusion: With the help of metabolomics analysis, the differential metabolites in patients with adenomatous polyps of the colon and yang-deficiency constitution and those in patients without colon polyps and with balanced constitution could be identified. The biomarker 3-oxo-4,6-choladienoic acid may have potential diagnostic value in patients with adenomatous polyp of the colon and yang-deficiency constitution. Since the Quaternary Period, paleo-seawater intrusions have been suggested to explain the observed saline groundwater that extends far inland in coastal zones. The Luanhe River delta (northwest coast of the Bohai Sea, China) is characterized by the distribution of saline, brine, brackish, and fresh groundwater from the coastline inland. The groundwater in this region exhibits a wide range of total dissolved solids (TDS): 0.38–125.9 g L -1. Meanwhile, previous studies have revealed that this area was significantly affected by Holocene marine transgression. This study used hydrochemical, isotopic, and sedimentological methods to investigate groundwater salinization processes in the Luanhe River delta and its links to paleo-environmental settings. Isotopic results (2 H, 18 O, 14 C) allowed old groundwater recharge to be distinguished from new groundwater recharge. Hydrochemical analysis using the PHREEQC code indicated that the salt in saline and brine groundwater originates from a marine source. The 18 O–Cl relationship diagram yields three-end-member groundwater mixing, and two mixing scenarios are suggested to explain the freshening and salinization processes in the study area. When this was interpreted along with data from paleo-environmental sediments, we found that groundwater salinization may have occurred since the Holocene marine transgression. The brine is characterized by radiocarbon activities of ∼ 50–85 pMC and relatively depleted stable isotopes, which are associated with seawater evaporation in the ancient lagoon during delta progradation and mixing with deeper fresh groundwater, which was probably recharged in the cold Late Pleistocene. The brackish and fresh groundwaters are characterized by river-like stable isotope values, where high radiocarbon activities (74.3–105.9 pMC) were formed after the washing out of the salinized aquifer by surface water in the delta plain. This study presents an approach that utilizes geochemical indicator analysis with paleo-geographic reconstruction to better assess groundwater evolutionary patterns in coastal aquifers. Sciaromiopsis comprises a single species, S. sinensis, endemic to China. The genus is currently placed in the Amblystegiaceae, solely on the basis of gametophytic characters since its sporophytes are unknown. As a semiaquatic plant, the character of a strong leaf costa and marginal borders can aid S. sinensis to adapt drought as while as aquatic conditions. In this study, the phylogenetic position of Sciaromiopsis was revisited based on morphological and molecular phylogentic evidences of three datasets, the plastid rps4 dataset with 346 mosses species, the ITS dataset with 104 moss species and 82 plastid protein-coding gene dataset with 32 moss species. According to the morphological characters of gametophyte, the stable pattern of pseudoparaphyllia, leaf cells smooth and single costa of Sciaromiopsis are consistent with key characteristics of the Brachytheciaceae, the ovate-lanceolate leaves, differentiated alar cells and rhomboidal median leaf cells are consistent with key characteristics of the Brachythecium. Maximum likelihood and Bayesian analyses of both datasets of the rps4 gene and the 82 plastid protein-coding genes clearly indicated that Sciaromiopsis is a member of Brachytheciaceae. Sciaromiopsis sinensis is either clustered in a well supported clade among species of Brachythecium, Koponeniella and Myuroclada in the rps4 tree, or strongly supported as the sister to Brachythecium rivulare in plastid 82 gene tree. Maximum likelihood analysis of the nuclear ITS locus suggested that S. sinensis is nested within Brachythecium with moderate support. Thus, S. sinensis should be considered as a member of the Brachythecium, the diagnostic character of its leaf margin bordered by 5–8 rows of linear cells making it an easy distinction from other species of Brachythecium. Based on the principle of bionics, this paper combines the design of flexible bionic antenna with Chinese culture and proposes a dual-material bionic antenna with Electromagnetic Band Gap (EBG) structure. The antenna uses a polyimide flexible substrate. Radiation patch of this antenna is shaped like a \pear flower", and the \CHINA" shaped slot is etched on the ground to form a Logo mark. In order to reduce the impact of antenna radiation on human body, the introduction of an EBG structure made of Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) material makes the front-to-back ratio of the antenna radiation significantly increased. The antenna was bent in different ways and placed on human body model for simulation and testing. The results showed that the antenna achieved an impedance bandwidth of 18.8% (2.22{2.46 GHz), peak gain of 4.02 dBi, and the antenna was low sensitive to deformation, which makes it suitable for modern flexible electronic equipment. From the perspective of bionics, the antenna has good radiation and wearable type, and the beautiful pattern improves the viewing ability of the antenna and people's willingness to wear the wearable antenna, which provides a new design idea for the future design of wearable devices. Background: In recent years, the number of adolescents engaging in premarital sex has increased, and an increasing number of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) cases have been reported in China. Many studies have indicated that CSA has a well-established association with risky sexual activities. However, only a limited number of studies have explored possible reasons for this association among middle school students, a population that may engage in premarital sex, which is critical for the development of interventions to prevent risky sexual behavior. Based on random samples of middle school students from a Chinese city, this article investigated the relationship between CSA and students' premarital sexual permissiveness (PSP).Methods: In a cross-sectional study conducted between 2016 and 2017 in Luzhou, China, 2292 middle school and high school students aged 12-18 years were recruited by multistage random sampling. All students were administered anonymous questionnaires. Multiple linear regression and binary logistic regression analyses were conducted to analyze the relationship between CSA and PSP.Results: The prevalence of CSA was 15.4% (354/2292; 95% CI: 14-16.9%). A higher percentage of male respondents (18.2%) than female respondents (12.9%) had experienced CSA. A positive association between CSA and PSP was found among students. Respondents who had suffered CSA exhibited greater PSP, and this relationship was observed in the male sample, female sample and the total student sample in Luzhou (β = - 3.76, P < 0.05; β = - 2.79, P < 0.05; and β = - 2.84, P < 0.05, respectively). Respondents who had suffered CSA were also more likely to express a double standard about premarital sex (odds ratio [OR] =1.41, P < 0.05), especially among male students (odds ratio [OR] =1.63, P < 0.05).Conclusions: Sex differences in CSA and the relationship between CSA and PSP were significant among this large sample of middle school students in Luzhou (China). The findings suggest that experiencing CSA may be closely related to youth attitudes toward premarital sex, especially among males. Therefore, it is important to emphasize the prevention of CSA and provide adolescent reproductive health programs to reduce the impact of CSA on sexual cognition and attitude, prevent premarital sex and promote positive attitudes toward sexual equality for middle school students. Background: Cervical cancer is known to be the fourth most common cancer among women globally. In various factors, genetic factors have been considered as one major risk factor for cervical cancer. The research of genetic susceptibility to cervical cancer can be greatly helpful in studying the complex mechanism. This study was conducted to identify whether polymorphic variants of p73 G4C14-A4T14 and tumor protein p53 (p53) codon 72, either independently or jointly, might be associated with the risk of cervical cancer.Methods: The genotypes of p73 G4C14-A4T14 and p53 codon 72 polymorphisms of peripheral blood DNA from 190 cervical cancer patients and 210 controls were investigated using polymerase chain reaction with confronting two-pair primers and polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism, respectively.Results: The frequency of p73 G4C14-A4T14 AT/AT (P = 0.013) or p53 codon 72 GG (P = 0.026) genotype was associated with an increased risk of cervical cancer by comparing with the p73 G4C14-A4T14 GC/GC or p53 codon 72 CC genotype, respectively. In addition, the interaction between the p73 G4C14-A4T14 and p53 codon 72 polymorphisms increased the risk of cervical cancer in a multiply manner, with the odds ratio being 3.692 (95% confidence interval =2.106-6.473) for subjects carrying both p73 G4C14-A4T14 GC/AT+AT/AT and p53 codon 72 GG genotypes.Conclusion: These results suggest that there is a statistical difference between p73 and p53 gene polymorphism and the risk of cervical cancer in Chinese women, and there is a potential gene-gene interaction in the incidence of cervical cancer. The study considers the phylogenetic affinities and taxonomical placement of the previously unknown hepatic from Hengduan Mts. in Yunnan Province of China. This area is known to house a vast assemblage of peculiar and taxonomically secluded taxa of hepatics, serving as kind of storehouse of missing links in the evolution. The newly recorded taxon combines lophozioid appearance with prominent tooth in the antical side of the leaf—the feature previously observed in Cephaloziineae very rarely and in bracts only. Molecular phylogenetic reconstruction, inferred from the nuclear ITS region and the chloroplast rps4 gene, trnL-F region and trnG-intron resolved Konstantinovia gen. nov. as the closest relative of highly phylogenetically isolated monospecific genus Obtusifolium. Their joint clade is sister to the Anastrophyllaceae clade in the tree inferred from combined ITS and trnL sequences, while topology inferred from combined trnG and rps4 sequences fails to resolve its affinity within the Scapaniaceae s.l. clade. Therefore, the new family Obtusifoliaceae is introduced to accommodate these genera, and the familial classification of Cephaloziineae is discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The giant Jiaodong gold deposits represent one of the largest gold provinces (>5000 tons of Au) in the North China Craton of eastern China. They formed ~1.7 b.y. after high-grade metamorphism of the crust. The metasomatized subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) has been increasingly proposed as the main source of such gold mineralization, but the direct geochemical links remain scarce. Here, we present a comprehensive d34S dataset of sulfides from fresh lamprophyres (130-121 Ma) that formed from the metasomatized SCLM that is spatially and temporally associated with the Jiaodong gold deposits (ca. 120 Ma). Due to the negligible effects of crustal contamination and magmatic degassing, the consistently high d34S (4‰-6‰, n = 73) of lamprophyres from variable localities reveals d34S-enriched mantle sources relative to the asthenospheric mantle (-1.3‰ ± 0.3‰). Combined with the radiogenic Sr-Nd-Pb isotope signatures of these lamprophyres, we determined that such high d34S signatures could have resulted from a period of mantle metasomatism related to subducted continental materials. The lamprophyres share d34S (4.4‰ ± 0.8‰) and Sr-Nd-Pb isotopes with coeval gold-mineralized diorites (ca. 120 Ma) beneath the ore field (d34S: 5.4‰ ± 2.5‰), which were interpreted to have sampled the magma chamber underlying the auriferous fluid systems. The lamprophyres and diorites consistently indicate the key control of metasomatized SCLM, although these mantle-derived magmas followed different pathways from source to crust. These relatively primitive and evolved magmas all show S and Pb isotopes similar to ore-related sulfides from the Jiaodong gold deposits, particularly those formed in the deep parts and at the early stage of the Jiaodong auriferous fluid system (d34S: 5‰-7‰). Such results suggest that the primary auriferous fluids are genetically linked to the magmas derived from the metasomatized SCLM. Combined with radiogenic isotopes, our study on the sulfur isotopes of mantle-derived magmas identifies the metasomatized mantle source of the gold and provides new evidence for establishing a geochemical link between metasomatized SCLM, derivative magmas, and the giant gold deposits, supporting the model that subduction-related metasomatism plays a key role in the enrichment of volatiles and gold in the SCLM for large-scale gold mineralization. Purpose: Progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis (PFIC) is a rare genetic autosomal recessive disease caused by mutations in ATP8B1, ABCB11 or ABCB4. Mutational analysis of these genes is a reliable approach to identify the disorder. Methods: We collected and analyzed relevant data related to clinical diagnosis, biological investigation, and molecular determination in nine children carrying these gene mutations, who were from unrelated families in South China. Results: Of the nine patients (five males, four females) with PFIC, one case of PFIC1, four cases of PFIC2, and four cases of PFIC3 were diagnosed. Except in patient no. 8, jaundice and severe pruritus were the major clinical signs in all forms. Î-glutamyl transpeptidase was low in patients with PFIC1/PFIC2, and remained mildly elevated in patients with PFIC3. We identified 15 different mutations, including nine novel mutations (p.R470HfsX8, p.Q794X and p.I1170T of ABCB11 gene mutations, p.G319R, p.A1047P, p.G1074R, p.T830NfsX11, p.A1047PfsX8 and p.N1048TfsX of ABCB4 gene mutations) and six known mutations (p.G446R and p.F529del of ATP8B1 gene mutations, p.A588V, p.G1004D and p.R1057X of ABCB11 gene mutations, p.P479L of ABCB4 gene mutations). The results showed that compared with other regions, these three types of PFIC genes had different mutational spectrum in China. Conclusion: The study expands the genotypic spectrum of PFIC. Objective: Whether lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) is a predictor for recurrent cardiovascular events (RCVEs) in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) has not been established. This study, hence, aimed to examine the potential impact of Lp(a) on RCVEs in a real-world, large cohort of patients with the first cardiovascular event (CVE).Methods: In this multicentre, prospective study, 7562 patients with angiography-diagnosed CAD who had experienced a first CVE were consecutively enrolled. Lp(a) concentrations of all subjects were measured at admission and the participants were categorised according to Lp(a) tertiles. All patients were followed-up for the occurrence of RCVEs including cardiovascular death, non-fatal myocardial infarction and stroke.Results: During a mean follow-up of 61.45±19.57 months, 680 (9.0%) RCVEs occurred. The results showed that events group had significantly higher Lp(a) levels than non-events group (20.58 vs 14.95 mg/dL, p<0.001). Kaplan-Meier analysis indicated that Lp(a) tertile 2 (p=0.001) and tertile 3 (p<0.001) groups had significantly lower cumulative event-free survival rates compared with tertile 1 group. Moreover, multivariate Cox regression analysis further revealed that Lp(a) was independently associated with RCVEs risk (HR: 2.01, 95% CI: 1.44 to 2.80, p<0.001). Moreover, adding Lp(a) to the SMART risk score model led to a slight but significant improvement in C-statistic (∆C-statistic: 0.018 (95% CI: 0.011 to 0.034), p=0.002), net reclassification (6.8%, 95% CI: 0.5% to 10.9%, p=0.040) and integrated discrimination (0.3%, 95% CI: 0.1% to 0.7%, p<0.001).Conclusions: Circulating Lp(a) concentration was indeed a useful predictor for the risk of RCVEs in real-world treated patients with CAD, providing additional information concerning the future clinical application of Lp(a). A rare super-large fractured karst aquifer located in Zibo city, Shandong Province of Northern China was polluted by petroleum hydrocarbons from a petrochemical company. Over the last 30 years, it has been the focus of several remediation efforts. In this study, the contamination and natural attenuation characteristics of the petroleum hydrocarbons were elucidated using hydrogeochemical indicators (DO, DOC, Cl−, HCO3−, pH, NO3−, and SO42−), petroleum hydrocarbons elements and environmental isotopes (δ15NNO3, δ18ONO3, δ13CDIC, and δ13CDOC). With the aid of GIS, statistical analyses, as well as first-order decay model and electron-acceptor-limited kinetic model, the spatio-temporal evolution characteristics of the petroleum hydrocarbons were modeled. Results showed a positive natural attenuation trend over the last 3 decades where intrinsic biodegradation mechanism was found to be the most important factor driving the degradation of hydrocarbons in the aquifer system. The hydrogeochemical association between the indicators and petroleum hydrocarbons provided the evidences of biodegradation and also served as markers, highlighting the occurrence of anaerobic respiration without methanogenic activities within the heterogenous karst media. Furthermore, the mean natural attenuation rate of petroleum hydrocarbons was calculated to be 3.76 × 10−3/day whereby the current highest petroleum hydrocarbons concentration (361.13 μg/L) is estimated to be degraded completely in 6 years under the present hydrogeological and environmental conditions. There is little information available on the mediating effects of soil nutrient stoichiometry and enzyme stoichiometry on soil carbon (C) during shrub encroachment and their contributions to changes in soil C. Here, we characterized the concentration and stock of soil organic carbon (SOC), inorganic carbon (SIC) and total carbon (STC) along the shrub encroachment sequence (SES). We constructed linkages between soil C and SES with soil nutrient stoichiometric ratios and C-, nitrogen- and phosphorus-acquiring enzyme stoichiometry ratios using structural equation modeling (SEM), and disentangled the contributions of the soil nutrient stoichiometric ratios and enzyme stoichiometric ratios to shaping SOC and SIC using redundancy analysis (RDA) and SEM. Results revealed that the increases in STC stock derived from the increases in both the SOC stock and the SIC stock. Soil stoichiometric ratios played a mediating role in structuring soil C over SES, the mediating pattern depended on soil stoichiometry types (nutrient stoichiometry or enzyme stoichiometry) and soil C types (SOC, SIC or STC). Soil nutrient stoichiometric ratios contributed more than soil enzyme stoichiometric ratios to the variation in SOC and STC, while the contributions of these two types of soil stoichiometric ratios to the variation in SIC changed with soil stoichiometry types. Soil nutrient stoichiometry had positive or negative or threshold effects on soil C, but soil enzyme stoichiometry had monotonously increasing effects on soil C. Silene sunhangii, a new species of Caryophyllaceae known from only three populations in Hubei and Hunan provinces of central China, is described. Both morphological and molecular data were used to assess the taxonomic status and relationships of this species. Morphologically, S. sunhangii is most similar to S. platyphylla Franch. from which it differs most readily in having 3-veined elliptical leaves without pubescence, tasseled catacorolla, pale purple to red petals without a linear lobe or narrow tooth and lanceolate, bifid to one third. A phylogenetic analysis based on nuclear ITS region identified the new species as a well-supported, independent lineage. Our new species is nested within a grade that encompasses species representing a polyphyletic Silene sect. Physolychnis (Benth.) Bocquet. Both the genetic and morphological data support the recognition of Silene sunhangii as a distinct species, although there is inconsistency between these two datasets as to the relationships of the new species. • Modeling hyporheic exchange and pare water residence times around a large dam in China (XLD). • XLD facilitates hyporheic exchange flow along upstream riverbank. • XLD induces flow paths with high flow velocities in the immediate vicinity of the dam. • Residence times were more dynamic in floodplain aquifer upstream of XLD than downstream. Anthropogenic in-stream structures such as large dams can alter stream hydrodynamics and cause river stage fluctuations that have the potential to affect hyporheic exchange flow (HEF) patterns between rivers and groundwater. However, the development of HEF patterns and residence time distribution (RTD) in dam-regulated riverbank aquifers has mostly been studied focusing on areas downstream of large dam structures while upstream areas have often been neglected. In order to investigate the HEF and RTD patterns under the influence of a large dam in upstream and downstream areas simultaneously, groundwater level data was collected from thirteen monitoring wells distributed over three monitoring profiles both upstream and downstream of XingLong water conservancy dam (XLD), in the Han river, China. Based on field observations, a two-dimensional, horizontal numerical model was built to assess the spatiotemporal evolution of lateral hyporheic exchange flow, the spatial extent of the hyporheic zone (HZ) and groundwater RTD under the influence of the XLD. Our results demonstrate that the impact of the XLD is different in upstream and downstream aquifer regions. The storage effect induced by the XLD caused significant groundwater recharge upstream of the dam over long period of model, while significant groundwater discharge occurs downstream of the dam. As the stage of the regulated Han River varies, the HZ along the upstream river boundary significantly enhanced by the dam whereas substantial HEF downstream was observed in response to rising or high river stage. Furthermore, the operation of the XLD resulted in some substantial flow around the dam characterized by short flow path lengths and high flow velocity, which consequently resulted in the development of a significant HZ in the perimeter surrounding the XLD. Residence time distributions showed that the water in the HZ downstream of the XLD is dominated by rejuvenated (younger) groundwater, whereas the HZ upstream of the XLD comprises a mix of older and younger waters. HEF in the immediate vicinity of the dam comprises both aged and rejuvenated discharged groundwater. Our findings emphasize the need to more holistically consider river stage dynamics in river corridors where large dams are operated to better assess and understand the consequences on riverbank storage as well as flow, transport and attenuation patterns in connected floodplain aquifers and their impact on the aquatic environment. Background/aim: This study evaluated the usefulness of measuring the atlantodental interval (ADI) and lateral atlantodental spaces (LADSs) by retrospectively analyzing the imaging data of children of various ages with and without atlantoaxial rotatory subluxation (AARS). Materials and methods: The data of 495 children who underwent cranial computed tomography were collected. Among these children, 255 children were clinically diagnosed with AARS while 240 children were not. ADI and LADS values were measured. Results: The difference in mean ADI between children with and without AARS in all age groups was statistically significant (t-test, all P < 0.05). In children without AARS, the 95% reference range for ADI was <3.2 mm. The difference in the variance of bilateral lateral atlantodental spaces (VBLADSs) between children with and without AARS in all age groups was statistically significant (rank-sum test, all P < 0.05), with a 95% reference range of 0–2.20 mm (D-test). Conclusion: The ADI is a well-known and frequently used parameter and is not new, but there is little research about this in China and here we confirm its application in Chinese children. The LADS is not a frequently used parameter, but it does not significantly differ. The VBLADS parameter is new and significant in this manuscript. We concluded that VBLADSs of >2.2 mm are useful indicators for the diagnosis of AARS in patients ≤14 years old. Finally, it can be concluded that ADI of ≥3.2 mm and VBLADS of >2.2 mm are useful indicators for the diagnosis of AARS in patients ≤14 years old. Background: Postprandial distress syndrome (PDS) is referred to as meal-related functional dyspepsia (FD) and causes a reduced quality of life (QoL) for patients. Several randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have suggested that acupuncture is an effective treatment for FD, but few studies were particularly for PDS. This pilot study was designed to determine the feasibility and efficacy of acupuncture in patients with PDS characterized by postprandial fullness and early satiation according to the Rome III criteria.Methods: This is a multi-center, two-arm, blinded (participants), pilot RCT. Forty-two participants who meet the inclusion criteria will be randomly assigned to the verum acupuncture group or minimal acupuncture group in a 1:1 ratio. Both treatments consist of 12 sessions of 20 min duration over four weeks (three sessions per week). The primary outcome measurement is the proportion of persons who improve as assessed using the global outcome by the overall treatment effect (OTE) at end-of-treatment (EOT) (four weeks after randomization). Global assessment at weeks 8 and 16 after randomization is one of the secondary outcomes. The other secondary outcomes including symptoms, disease-specific QoL, and depression and anxiety will be assessed at weeks 4, 8, and 16 after randomization.Discussion: This pilot study will help determine the feasibility and efficacy of acupuncture in patients with PDS.Trial Registration: ISRCTN Registry, ISRCTN18135146 .
