Textbooks use images, in addition to text, for delivering knowledge, thereby convey attitudes and values of students including those on gender bias. The gender bias presented in textbook images affects in subtle ways the students' learning outcomes, career choices, and how they perceive science. However, prior research has relied on explicit information presented by textbook images of several subjects to investigate gender representation, overlooking the implicit meaning behind images with a very limited attention to science textbooks. Therefore, this study uses the social semiotic framework to analyse the implicit meaning that images convey related to gender representation in Chinese and Egyptian science textbooks. Specifically, four (two for each country) science textbooks of grade nine were coded and analysed. The findings revealed that gender gap still exists in the images of both Chinese and Egyptian science textbooks. Specifically, females were less represented in the textbook images compared to males, and their role was mostly a caring role. Notably, unlike the Chinese females and the common gender stereotype, Egyptian females were represented in a more active and powerful way compared to males. The findings of this study could help in better designing science textbook images to reduce gender bias.

Tsoongiodendron odorum Chun is a large evergreen tree in the Magnoliaceae family and an ancient relict species represented by small wild populations. It has excellent material quality, high ornamental value, and scientific significance. However, due to the complicated natural reproduction and notable habitat destruction, its wild populations must be urgently conserved. We used genotyping-by-sequencing to examine 17 natural populations of T. odorum in China, the species' primary habitat, to better understand the genetic diversity of this species and use its germplasm resources. T. odorum had a very low level of genetic diversity; its mean values for Ho, He, Pi, and PIC were 0.175, 0.123, 0.160, and 0.053, respectively. With an average within-population Fst of 0.023 and an inter-population gene flow Nm of 10.918, population genetic variation was primarily found within populations, demonstrating minute genetic divergence between populations. The 17 natural populations of T. odorum were divided into two major categories: the Fujian populations in eastern China and the Jiangxi, Guangdong, Hunan, and Guangxi populations in central and western China. Our research contributes to the understanding of T. odorum's genetic diversity and organization and offers a theoretical framework for the species' conservation, breeding, and selection. Afforestation plays a critical role in ecosystem restoration and carbon sequestration. However, there continues to be insufficient knowledge about the long-term effects of different tree species on the forest soil in central subtropical China. In this study, five indigenous afforestation tree species commonly used in the region, including Bretschneidera sinensis, Liriodendron chinense, Schima superba, Phoebe bournei, and Cunninghamia lanceolata, were selected to explore their long-term effects on the forest soil. The soil's physicochemical properties, organic carbon content, enzyme activity, and respiration were investigated. Our results revealed significant differences in the soil physicochemical properties, enzyme activity, organic carbon content, and soil respiration among the different tree species even with the same tree species types. Broad-leaved species, particularly L. chinense and P. bournei, exhibited superior soil physicochemical properties, higher amounts of organic carbon contents, enzyme activity, and soil respiration compared to coniferous species C. lanceolata. Notably, for the two studied evergreen tree species, P. bournei seemed to improve the forest soil quality more than S. superba. Hence, increasing the proportion of broad-leaved tree species may have a beneficial effect on the soil's physicochemical properties and microecology. The subtropical region of China possesses abundant broad-leaf tree species resources; however, the anatomical properties and microstructure of the wood are still unclear, which restricts the processing and utilization of wood. In this study, 14 broad-leaf trees and four coniferous trees were selected. Wood anatomical indices and wood microanatomy were used to evaluate the wood properties using a comprehensive index method. The results have shown that Dalbergia assamica exhibited the highest wood basic density among the 14 broad-leaved tree species, accompanied by a significant fiber proportion and vessel lumen diameter but a small vessel proportion and a high number of wood rays. Conversely, Parakmeria lotungensis and Michelia chapensis had relatively low wood basic densities, rendering them less suitable as valuable broad-leaved wood sources. Altingia chinensis, Castanopsis kawakamii, and the remaining 11 tree species exhibited medium-level wood basic densities. The 14 broad-leaved tree species had medium-length fibers. Phoebe bournei, Dalbergia assamica, and Castanopsis kawakamii demonstrated relatively high fiber proportion. Altingia chinensis, Dalbergia assamica, and Castanopsis kawakamii exhibited a large number of wood rays, making their wood more susceptible to cracking, whereas other broad-leaved tree species possessed fewer wood rays. Hyphantria cunea (Drury) (Lepidoptera: Erebidae) is an invasive alien species that is widely distributed in northern China. H. cunea now occurs for the first time in the subtropical areas of China. Despite the importance of identifying oviposition host plants to control the spread of H. cunea, it is not clear whether H. cunea has a new oviposition preference for plant hosts in the new habitat after invading the subtropical region. At the same time, whether the presence of new plant volatiles of new hosts in new habitats influences the oviposition host preference of H. cunea has not been studied. In this study, we investigated the oviposition host plant preferences of H. cunea in the subtropical region of China. In the presence of multiple potential host plants, we found, for the first time, that H. cunea preferred Carya illinoinensis, Morus alba, and Carya cathayensis for oviposition. Through the effects on plant volatiles and on the oviposition, ten volatile compounds with significant differences in relative abundance between five plants with different fitness levels were significantly correlated with the oviposition preference of females. Cis-Hex-3-en-1-ol, (E)-3-Hexen-1-ol, cis-3-Hexenyl acetate 1, and 3-Pentadiene,4-methyl, had a significant positive correlation with the adult oviposition preference. Internet's online information services can deliver high-quality services to the public while eliminating social alienation and virus transmission. From 2013 until the fourth quarter of 2020, China has had the highest number of Internet users in the world. Public access to information in the health care business in China is mostly through the Internet. In the healthcare business, high-quality information services are the fundamental obstacle because of their importance and effect on human lives. This article uses Chinese hospitals as a case study, covering assessment system development and empirical research. A total of 217 questionnaires were issued, 212 of which were valid, and the effective rate was 97.6 percent. The outcomes of the research show that the extensive epidemiological information services of the hospital website during an epidemic outbreak have a significant influence on the public's use of the hospital website. Secondly, high-quality epidemic-related information services are critical to enhancing website information services during outbreaks. Finally, in the epidemic, the high-quality service of the hospital's website has a greater impact on the worth of information in comparison to the content of information service. Purpose: The myopectineal orifice (MPO) is a weak area at lower part of the anterior abdominal wall that directly determines the mesh size required in inguinal hernia repair. However, MPO data have mainly been acquired from measurements of cadavers or anesthetized patients. Furthermore, there are very few reports on the measurement of the MPO in Chinese patients. The present study aimed to use three-dimensional visualization technology to measure the MPO in live non-anesthetized Chinese patients, and to use this information to indicate the appropriate mesh size required for inguinal hernia repair. Methods: In this study, we used the parameters of the MPO and the pelvis that were measured in 40 patients with peripheral arterial disease of the lower limb arteries (80 inguinal regions) using Medraw software (Image Medraw Technology Co., Ltd., China). Results: The result showed that the average width and height of the MPO were 5.71 ± 0.99 cm and 4.96 ± 0.69 cm, respectively (5.22 ± 0.77 cm and 5.13 ± 0.63 cm in males, and 6.20 ± 0.95 cm and 4.80 ± 0.71 cm in females). The average projected area of the MPO was 16.06 ± 4.37 cm2 on the left, and 15.61 ± 4.10 cm2 on the right (P > 0.05). Conclusion: Three-dimensional visualization was used to measure the area, width, and height of the MPO in living non-anesthetized Chinese patients. In recent years, increasing eutrophication in large freshwater lakes, which are an important drinking water source for cities in China, have been resulted in substantial cyanobacteria blooms that could cause serious taste and odor (T&O) problems. In this investigation, three typical lakes (Songhua Lake, Chaohu Lake and Taihu Lake) as drinking water sources located in different geographical areas in China, were selected to study the problems of cyanobacteria-derived T&O (i.e., 2-methylisobornoel, geosmin, β-ionone, 2-isopropyl-3-methoxypyrazine, 2-isobutyl-3-methoxypyrazine, and 2-methylbenzofuran). The occurrence of T&O in target lakes was compared across various nutrition states and geographic locations, to get more information for early warning for algal bloom and T&O occurrence, being useful lake water management and purification. Results show that the occurrence of T&O in Songhua Lake was the poorest for the lowest nutrient state, as a first report in T&O research field in China. This is a lake located in Northeast China at high latitude, with lower water temperatures. The occurrence of T&O in Chaohu Lake was ranked in the middle. That in Taihu Lake was the most intensive. The raw coal, cleaned coal, middlings, gangue and slime samples were collected from Guandi coal preparation plant, China. The modes of occurrence and thermal stability of mercury in the samples were characterized by the temperature programmed decomposition-atomic fluorescence spectroscopy (TPD-AFS) technique coupled with acid leaching. The results show that the Hg contents of cleaned coal and middlings are lower than that in raw coal while the Hg content of raw coal is less than that of gangue or slime. HCl-soluble Hg, organic-bound Hg, pyrite-bound Hg and silicate-bound Hg exist in all the samples. However, the distributions of modes of occurrence of Hg in all samples are different. The contents of HCl-soluble Hg and pyrite-bound Hg are in the order of gangue > slime > raw coal > middlings > cleaned coal. The silicate-bound Hg contents are the least and in the order of middlings > gangue > slime > raw coal > cleaned coal. The organic-bound Hg proportion has significant correlation with the organic material content of the samples. For HCl-soluble Hg and pyrite-bound Hg, the thermal stability is similar in all coal samples. The thermal stability of the silicate-bound Hg is highest among all the modes of occurrence of Hg and shows a certain dependency upon mineral in samples. Riverine samples were collected at various locations in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) to determine the concentrations of heavy metals (Cr, Ni, Cu, Mn, Zn, Cd, and Pb) in time and space and to estimate the fluxes of heavy metals to the coastal waters off South China. Most of the elements exhibit clear temporal and spatial trends. Principal component analysis shows that surface erosion is the major factor affecting metal concentrations in particulates in the PRD. Natural geology is an important source of these heavy metals. The annual fluxes of Cr, Ni, Cu, Mn, Zn, Cd, and Pb in upstream and downstream were 445, 256, 241, 3293, 1279, 12, and 317 t/year and 1823, 1144, 1786, 15,634, 6183, 74, and 2017 t/year, respectively. A comparison indicated that the annual fluxes of Mn accounted for 1.3% of the global river fluxes, whereas other elements contribute < 1%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A total of 450 samples from domestic pigs in China were tested for porcine parvoviruses (PPVs) and co-infections with porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2), and their complete capsid genes were sequenced. The prevalence of PPV1, PPV2, PPV3, PPV4, and PCV2 was 5.56 %, 39.56 %, 45.11 %, 21.56 %, and 47.33 %, respectively, and co-infection with PCV2 occurred in 4 % (PPV1), 22.44 % (PPV2), 24 % (PPV3), and 12 % (PPV4) of the samples. Phylogenetic analysis revealed two main lineages for each virus, and residues that differentiated these viruses were identified. Background: Full-time clinician educators are becoming more predominant in China, yet their effect is unknown.Purposes: The purpose of this study was to compare the teaching quality of full-time (FT) faculty with that of part-time (PT) faculty in one Chinese medical school.Methods: In 3 consecutive years, 881 3rd year medical students were enrolled and randomly distributed into two groups, being taught by either a FT faculty member or a PT faculty member. Their teaching quality was evaluated with student performance on a written exam, the standardized patient exam, and student satisfaction.Results: The students in the FT group always scored better on the written exam (1st year = 79.82 ± 9.2 vs. 81.26 ± 8.2,p< .188; 2nd year = 73.10 ± 9.8 vs. 76.51 ± 7.9,p= .001; 3rd year = 75.15 ± 9.0 vs. 79.51 ± 8.7,p< .0001). In the standardized patient exam, the students from FT groups always showed better performance in history taking and physical examination. Students continually gave higher evaluations to FT faculty in questionnaires (1st year = 76.8 ± 6.5 vs. 84.3 ± 2.2; 2nd year = 78.6 ± 3.9 vs. 89.7 ± 4.2; 3rd year = 75.8 ± 3.9 vs. 88.5 ± 3.5, allps < .001).Conclusions: The teaching quality of FT faculty in clinical-skills training is better than PT faculty in this study. From 17:00 to 18:00 local standard time (LST) on 3 July 2019, a rare strong tornado occurred in Kaiyuan, Liaoning Province, northeast China. NCEP/NCAR 0.25° × 0.25° reanalysis data and WRF4.0 numerical prediction models were used to carry out the numerical simulation. Double nesting was adopted, and the horizontal grid distance was 9 km by 3 km. Based on the observation data of China meteorological observation stations, surface and upper charts, Doppler radar data, Himawari(HMW)-8 satellite images and numerical simulation results, the mesoscale structure and mechanism of the tornado were studied. The results show that: (1) At the northwest edge of the subtropical high, and the northeast cold vortex located in Northeast China, when the transverse trough moves southward, cold air is supplied continuously. Under the joint influence of the surface northeast cyclone, these are the main synoptic features of the tornado; (2) The northeast cold vortex cloud system was located at the junction of Heilongjiang and Jilin Provinces, and a squall line cloud system is formed. The tornado occurred at the tail of the squall line, and the strongest echo reached 65 dBZ. A mesocyclone, a 20 km northwest–southeast convergence belt, V-shaped gap, echo overhang structure and tornado vortex feature (TVS) were detected by the Doppler radar; (3) Before the tornado occurred, dry and cold air intruded from the northwest of the cold vortex, and a water vapor convergence zone appeared south of the squall line. The water vapor saturation zone with 80% relative humidity in northeast China was concentrated at 700 hPa, and the 20% dry column dropped down to 500 hPa between 115 and 124° E from the west. On the 850 hPa physical fields, there was a −20 × 10−5 s−1 convergence zone, and a 16 × 10−5 s−1 divergence belt appeared south and north of the squall line. A negative vorticity belt and a positive vorticity belt appeared south and north of the squall line, respectively. Kaiyuan is located at the smallest vertical shear, which is the junction place of three large vertical shear belts; (4) After 10:00 LST, the westerly wind 20 (10) m·s−1 dropped to 400 (800) hPa between 126 and 127° E. The northerly gale at 300 hPa north of 45° N moved southward. The rising center of the low level at 17:00 LST at approximately 45° N moved southward, and a sinking center appeared above it; (5) Several pairs of positive and negative vorticity columns formed between the lower troposphere and the place where the tornado occurred. Plastic recycling is critical for dematerializing of plastics. It has a profound implication on decoupling economic growth from environmental pressure and advancing waste plastic governance domestically and internationally while identifying drivers that might improve decoupling. In this study, plastic consumption and recycling patterns are presented, and the factors influencing the acceleration of dematerialization subsequent to the ban were investigated in the G7 countries and China. The results show that plastic consumption increases from 7.60 million metric tons (mt) to 12.60 mt between 2017 and 2019, and subsequently rapidly decreases to 6.84 mt in 2020. The plastic recycling rate drastically decreased by 21.3% in 2017, and decreased slightly from 2017 to 2020, at an annual rate of 2.9% on average. China's ban shocked the decoupling trends, which showed resilience and motivated the development of robust plastic recycling, and the global recycling transformation pattern accelerated the dematerialization of plastics. Decoupling performances of the G7 and China gradually stabilized in 2019, and all the countries were strongly decoupled in 2020, although decoupling index (DI) fluctuates from 2017 to 2020. Among the recycling-trading drivers, the improvement of waste plastic quality in recycling contributes more to decoupling, the recycling rate shows a more negative decoupling effect on China before the ban, and the population effect is weak relative to other influencing factors. The factors revealed the mechanism of decoupling of plastic consumption in the recycling-trading process, and the recyclability improvement in terms of plastic quality is important for dematerialization. The reuse of the sewage is an effective way to solve the shortage of water resources, but disinfection by-products (DBPs) caused by chlorination may bring potential ecological and health risks to the supplied water. In this study, the occurrence and potential ecological risk of DBPs in SH River in Beijing were evaluated. Four kinds of DBPs were detected in 84 samples by GC-MS, including THM, CH, CTC and TCAN, whose detection rates were 100%, 100%, 100% and 2.38%, respectively. Combining with the relevant standard limitation and corresponding threshold values in China, and the reported concentration in domestic and foreign literatures, the results showed that the number of samples which [THM], [CTC] and [CH] exceeded the threshold values in relevant standard for 23.81%, 100.00% and 89.29%, respectively. CTC showed the highest excess times than the threshold value with [CTC] max was 356.46 μg/L. In addition, the temporal and spatial characteristics of identified DBPs were studied. [THM], [CTC] and [CH] all exhibited the highest concentration in Aug., which was as the same as the variation trend of air and water temperature. With the increase of sampling distance, [THM] and [CTC] fluctuated greatly, and the background values in SH River were higher due to the supplement of the reclaimed water. [CH] and [TCAN] gradually decreased, which may be due to that they were more prone to volatilize in the channel and be degraded by aquatic microorganisms. In addition, the occurrence situation in S2 and S7, were in the order of CTC > CH > THM. Hence, the rank of the occurrence situation of identified DBPs was CTC > CH > THM > TCAN. Multivariate analysis showed that THM was significantly positively correlated with CTC and their sources were similar. Moreover, they were all affected by solution pH and DO. Potential ecological risk assessment indicated that the rank of identified DBPs ecological risk was CTC > THM > CH > TCAN. Among them, the risk level of CTC and THM were high in both daily and extreme situations. Therefore, the potential ecological risk caused by DBPs should be fully considered in the process of reclaimed water supplying landscape water, such as urban river. The Ordos Basin is the largest cratonic basin in the North China Craton (NCC) with minimal intra-basin deformation in the Phanerozoic, making itself a good proxy to study the Precambrian evolution of the NCC. The distribution of the Precambrian strata and associated structural deformation in the Ordos Basin, however, remain an enigma due to the thick covering of the Phanerozoic strata. Herein, we depicted the residual thicknesses of the oldest sedimentary strata above the basement in the Ordos Basin, the late Paleoproterozoic to Mesoproterozoic Changcheng and Jixian systems, by combined forward and inverse modeling of the Bouguer Gravity Anomaly (BGA) data. The distribution of associated basement-involved faults was extracted by applying the signal-processing methods (e.g., the small sub-domain filtering and the total horizontal derivative) to the BGA data. The results were further calibrated by available geological constraints from limited borehole loggings, outcrops and seismic reflection data. They reveal an E- to NE-striking rift system with the development of plenty of syn-depositional normal faults and several uplifts and sags in the late Paleoproterozoic to Mesoproterozoic period in the Ordos Basin. The rift deposits reach ~8000 m in thickness in the southwestern Ordos Basin but thin toward north-northeast. The preexisting basement tectonics played an important role in the development of this rift system. Combined with regional tectonics, our findings imply that the late Paleoproterozoic to Mesoproterozoic extension in the Ordos Basin may not be related to the mantle plume centered in the Xiong'er Rift to the southeast, but instead likely results from the oceanic subduction beneath the southern margin of the NCC. This supports that the southern margin of the NCC may not connect with any other continental blocks in the reconstruction of the Paleoproterozoic Columbia Supercontinent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The japonica rice in Northeast China is famous because of its high quality. Eating and cooking qualities (ECQs) are the most important factors that determine cooked rice quality. However, the genetic basis of ECQ of japonica varieties in Northeast China needs further study. In this study, 200 japonica varieties that are widely distributed in Northeast China were collected to evaluate the physicochemical indices of grain ECQs. The distribution of each trait was concentrated without large variations. Correlation analysis indicated that gel consistency (GC) had a significantly negative correlation with gelatinization temperature (GT). By integrating various analyses including kinship calculation, principal component analysis (PCA), linkage disequilibrium (LD) analysis, and original parent investigation, we found that the japonica varieties in Northeast China exhibited a narrow genetic basis. An association study for grain ECQs was performed and eight quantitative trait loci (QTLs) were detected. ALK was the major locus that regulated GT and also significantly affecting GC. Through the linkage disequilibrium (LD) and expression pattern analysis, one possible candidate gene (LOC_Os02g29980) was predicted and required further research for validation. Additionally, a different allele of Wx was identified in the variety CH4126, and ALK was not fixed in these japonica varieties. These results further elucidate the genetic basis of ECQs of japonica varieties in Northeast China and provide local breeders some assistance for improving ECQs of rice grain in rice breeding. Ozone pollution is currently a serious issue in China. As an important source of tropospheric ozone, the stratospheric ozone has received less concern. This study uses a combination of ground-based ozone measurements, the latest ERA5 reanalysis data as well as chemistry-climate model and Lagrangian Particle Dispersion Modeling (LPDM) simulations to investigate the potential impacts of stratospheric intrusion (SI) on surface ozone pollution episodes in eastern China. Station-based observations indicate that severe ozone pollution occurred from 27 April to 28 April 2018 in eastern China, with maximal values over 140 ppbv. ERA5 meteorological and ozone data suggest that a strong horizontal-trough exists at the same time, which leads to an evident SI event and brings ozone-rich air from the stratosphere to the troposphere. Using a stratospheric ozone tracer defined by NCAR's Community Atmosphere Model with Chemistry (CAM-Chem), we conclude that this SI event contributed about 15 ppbv (15%) to the surface ozone pollution episode during 27–28 April in eastern China. A reference standard is needed for quality control of protein subunit SARS-CoV-2 vaccines to meet urgent domestic needs. The Chinese National Institutes for Food and Drug Control (NIFDC) launched a project to establish the first reference material for the protein subunit SARS-CoV-2 vaccine to be used for calibration of antigen testing. The potency and stability of the national candidate standard (CS) were determined by collaborative calibration, and accelerated and freeze–thaw degradation studies. Moreover, a suitability study of the CS was performed. Eight laboratories in mainland China were asked to detect antigen content of CS using a common validated enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit established by NIFDC and in-house kits in the collaborative study. Six laboratories returned valid results, which established that the antigen content of the CS was 876,938 YU/mL, with good agreement across laboratories. In the suitability study, the CS exhibited excellent parallelism and a linear relationship with four samples produced by different expression systems and target proteins. In addition, good stability in the accelerated and freeze–thaw degradation study was observed. In conclusion, the CS was approved by the Biological Product Reference Standards Sub-Committee of the National Drug Reference Standards Committee as the first Chinese national standard for determining antigen content of protein subunit SARS-CoV-2 vaccines, with an assigned antigen content of 877,000 U/mL (Lot. 300050–202101). This standard will contribute to a standardized assessment of protein subunit SARS-CoV-2 vaccine in China and may provide experience for developing reference materials for antigen content detection of SARS-CoV-2 vaccine in other countries. Advancing toilet technologies to address public health and sanitation issues are a concern of governments and organizations. This article mainly studies the assessment methods for the public toilets and some rural toilets considering from design to demolition to assist for the innovation of toilet technologies. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methods were adopted to identify the assessment indicators and rank the weight. The outcome of Toilet Assessment Scheme (TAS), which includes a set of weightings and a classification system for the selected assessment indicators and sub-indicators. The weight calculation result showed that water resources, ecology, and indoor environmental quality are relatively high, which indicates that saving water, protecting the environment and optimizing the toilet environment should be given priority at the current stage. The individual questionnaire experts from the perspective of gender, profession, and generation, have different emphases on the evaluation scheme. This study can improve the comprehensiveness of toilet evaluation under the distinct background conditions, and will play a relevant role in the promotion of new toilet technology. The TAS can accelerate the toilet revolution in areas where toilets are scarce, and thus will improve the sanitary and health conditions of these populations. To evaluate the nucleic acid and antibody test results of patients with Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) in China. All patients with laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection from Jan to Apr 2020were retrospectively analyzed. Clinical characteristics and laboratory test results were obtained from electronic medical records. Patients were divided into three groups based on antibody production, and compared for laboratory test results. Of 73 patients aged11–82 years, 12 (16.4%), 28 (38.4%), 25 (34.2%) and 8 (11.0%)were ≤ 30, 31–50, 51–70,and ≥ 71 years old, respectively. Thirty-four (46.6%) patients were male. Most individuals had mild symptoms, and no patient died during treatment. All patients were tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 in sputum and nasopharyngeal samples, and 40 (54.8%) were also tested positive in stool. Nine(12.3%) patients were re-positivefor SARS-CoV-2, as assessed by Reverse Transcription-Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) after discharge. Sixty-five (89.0%) patients had IgM or IgG antibodies against SARS-CoV-2.Among the four age groups, there was no difference in IgG antibody production (P = 0.664).CD3, CD4, CD8 and CD19 cell counts between the antibody producing and non-producing groups showed no significant differences (all P > 0.05).The antibodies disappeared within two months in four patients. Background: Chinese rural women aged 35-64 years are encouraged to complete breast cancer screening (BCS) free of charge. However, it is challenging to reach a satisfying BCS uptake rate. In this study, rural women's preferences and preferences heterogeneity were measured for the development of strategies to enhance participation in BCS., Methods: A cross-sectional survey with a discrete choice experiment (DCE) was conducted via convenience sampling via face-to-face interviews in Jiangsu, China. Six DCE attributes were identified through a systematic literature review; our previous study of Chinese rural women's BCS intentions; a qualitative work involving in-depth interviews with rural women (n = 13), medical staff (n = 4), and health care managers (n = 2); and knowledge of realistic and actionable policy. The D-efficient design was generated using Ngene 1.3.0. A mixed logit model (MXL) in Stata 18.0 was used to estimate the main effect of attribute levels on rural women's preferences. The relative importance and willingness to utilize BCS services (WTU) were also estimated. The heterogeneous preferences were analyzed by a latent class model (LCM). Sociodemographic status was used to predict the characteristics of class membership. The WTU for different classes was also calculated., Results: A total of 451 rural women, aged 35-64 years, were recruited. The MXL results revealed that the screening interval (SI) was the most important attribute for rural women with regard to utilizing BCS services, followed by the level of screening, the attitude of medical staff, ways to get knowledge and information, people who recommend screening, and time spent on screening (TSS). Rural women preferred a BCS service with a shorter TSS; access to knowledge and information through multiple approaches; a shorter SI; a recommendation from medical staff or workers from the village or community, and others; the enthusiasm of medical staff; and medical staff with longer tenures in the field. Two classes named "process driven" and "efficiency driven" were identified by the preference heterogeneity analysis of the LCM., Conclusion: There is a higher uptake of breast cancer screening when services are tailored to women's preferences. This study explores the spatial and temporal evolution characteristics of transportation carbon emissions from multiple scales. Based on the integrated DMSP/OLS-NPP/VIIRS nighttime light data, a transportation carbon emission estimation model was constructed, and the spatial and temporal evolution characteristics of transportation carbon emissions in 30 provinces and some counties in China from 2000 to 2019 were analyzed. The main findings are as follows: (1) The goodness-of-fit of the estimation model improved from 51.2 to 87.15% by introducing the GDP variables. (2) At the provincial scale, the provinces with high carbon emissions from transportation were mainly distributed in the eastern region, with the highest value increasing from 19,171.6 million tons in 2000 to 71,545.98 million tons in 2019. The spatial distribution has a significant and positive spatial spillover effect, and the H-H aggregation was mainly distributed in the east-central region, showing a trend of expansion from the coast to the inland. Trend analysis showed that Shandong, Guangdong, Shanghai, and Jiangsu were areas with a rapid growth of high carbon emissions. (3) The county scale displayed a northeast-southwest evolutionary pattern, with the center of gravity in Henan. The spatial distribution showed a significant spatial agglomeration phenomenon. Trend analysis indicated that the transportation carbon emissions in 184 counties need to be controlled urgently, which was the focus of carbon emission reduction. This paper theoretically enriches the measurement method of transportation carbon emissions and overcomes the problem of insufficient spatial information of statistical data. Study Objectives: Increased incidence of narcolepsy was reported in children during the 2009 H1N1 pandemic following Pandemrix, a H1N1 flu vaccine. A link with A(H1N1) pdm09 infections remains controversial. Using nationwide surveillance data from China (1990 to 2017), the epidemiology of narcolepsy was analyzed., Methods: Individual records of narcolepsy patients were collected from 15 of 42 hospitals across China known to diagnose cases. Incidence was estimated assuming the representativeness of these hospitals. Age-specific incidence, epidemiological and clinical characteristics of patients were evaluated before, during, and after the 2009 H1N1 pandemic. Sensitivity analyses were conducted by including NT1 cases only and excluding the effect of the 2009 H1N1 vaccination., Results: Average annual incidence was 0.79 per 100 000 person-years (PY) from 1990 to 2017 and 1.08 per 100 000 PY from 2003 to 2017. Incidence increased 4.17 (95% CI 4.12, 4.22) and 1.42 (95% CI 1.41, 1.44) fold during and after the 2009 H1N1 pandemic when compared to baseline. These results were robust in sensitivity analyses. Patients with the onset of narcolepsy during the pandemic period were younger (notably in 5-9-year-old strata), and the age shift toward younger children reversed to baseline following the pandemic., Conclusions: Increased incidence of narcolepsy was observed during the 2009 H1N1 pandemic period. Neutralizing antibody (NtAb) levels are key indicators in the development and evaluation of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccines. Establishing a unified and reliable WHO International Standard (IS) for NtAb is crucial for the calibration and harmonization of NtAb detection assays. National and other WHO secondary standards are key links in the transfer of IS to working standards but are often overlooked. The Chinese National Standard (NS) and WHO IS were developed by China and WHO in September and December 2020, respectively, the application of which prompted and coordinated sero-detection of vaccine and therapy globally. Currently, a second-generation Chinese NS is urgently required owing to the depletion of stocks and need for calibration to the WHO IS. The Chinese National Institutes for Food and Drug Control (NIFDC) developed two candidate NSs (samples 33 and 66-99) traced to the IS according to the WHO manual for the establishment of national secondary standards through a collaborative study of nine experienced labs. Either NS candidate can reduce the systematic error among different laboratories and the difference between the live virus neutralization (Neut) and pseudovirus neutralization (PsN) methods, ensuring the accuracy and comparability of NtAb test results among multiple labs and methods, especially for samples 66-99. At present, samples 66-99 have been approved as the second-generation NS, which is the first NS calibrated tracing to the IS with 580 (460-740) International Units (IU)/mL and 580 (520-640) IU/mL by Neut and PsN, respectively. Objective: To investigate the preoperative nutritional status of cardiac surgery patients in southwest China, analyze the incidence and characteristics of nutritional risk, and provide basis for establishing a standardized individualized nutritional intervention program for cardiac surgery patients., Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted on the nutritional status and intervention status of preoperative patients in cardiac surgery department of 23 general hospitals in Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan and Chongqing districts. At 00: 00 on July 7, 2022, the patients aged > 18 years old in cardiac surgery departments of the above hospitals who planned to undergo surgical treatment were enrolled as the survey objects to investigate the nutritional status on July 6, 2022 (the survey date), including basic information (general information, nutrition indicators, etc.), nutrition screening and evaluation (nutrition risk screening and organ support, etc.), nutrition treatment (nutrition supplement methods and prescriptions, etc.) and nutrition awareness of medical staff., Results: The 126 questionnaires were collected, of which 125 were valid (99.2%). (1) Basic information: of the 125 patients, 67 patients were male (53.6%) and 58 patients were female (46.4%). The age ranged from 19 years old to 86 years old, with an average of (53.13±14.74) years old. Body mass index (BMI) was (22.21±3.78) kg/m 2 . The age and BMI of men were significantly higher than those of women [age (years old): 56.63±13.34 vs. 49.09±15.35, BMI (kg/m 2 ): 22.74±3.86 vs. 21.59±3.61, both P < 0.05]. Of the 125 patients, 75 had valvular disease and 50 were with non-valvular diseases, which mainly included congenital heart disease [19 cases (15.2%)], aortic dissection [13 cases (10.4%)], coronary heart disease [12 cases (9.6%)], etc. The course of disease was 0.5 hour to 36 years, of which 93 patients (74.4%) were more than 6 months and 32 patients (25.6%) were equal to or less than 6 months. The proportion of female patients with disease duration > 6 months was significantly higher than that of male patients [87.9% (51/58) vs. 62.7% (42/67), P < 0.01]. The basic diseases mainly included hypertension [38 cases (30.4%)], coronary heart disease [12 cases (9.6%)], diabetes [7 cases (5.6%)], chronic obstructive pulmonary disease [COPD, 6 cases (4.8%)], etc. Among 125 patients, total protein (TP) < 60 g/L in 24 cases (19.2%), albumin (Alb) < 40 g/L in 64 cases (51.2%), anemia [male hemoglobin (Hb) < 120 g/L, female Hb < 110 g/L] in 33 cases (26.4%). A total of 60 cases of prealbumin data were collected, of which 23 cases (38.3%) were less than 200 mg/L. (2) Nutrition screening and assessment: 33.6% of the 125 patients did not undergo routine nutrition screening after admission, including the provincial and municipal tertiary hospitals. Among the 83 patients undergoing nutritional screening, 41 (32.8%) were at nutritional risk. Further analysis of patients with nutritional risk showed that of the 41 patients, 20 were male (48.8%) and 21 were female (51.2%); 27 cases (65.9%) was with valvular diseases and 14 cases (34.1%) was with non-valvular diseases; the course of disease was more than 6 months in 30 cases (73.2%), and ≤ 6 months in 11 cases (26.7%). Statistical comparison of the above 83 patients showed that women, basic disease, long term-valvular disease, anemia, low TP, and low Alb before operation were more prone to innutrition. (3) Nutritional therapy: of the 125 patients, 5 were receiving mechanical ventilation (4.0%) and 2 were using vasoactive drugs (1.6%); there were 5 cases with gastrointestinal dysfunction (4.0%), mainly manifested as abdominal distension, abdominal pain, constipation and diarrhea. One patient was treated with enteral nutrition through gastric tube combined with parenteral nutrition support, 124 patients were fed orally, and an irregular phenomenon of injecting amino acid fat emulsion through peripheral vein in 2 patients. (4) Nutrition awareness of medical staff: 124 (99.2%) of the 125 patients had a nutrition department in their hospital; 71 cases (56.8%) received nutrition education, of which 37 cases (52.1%) were consulted by the nutrition department. Of all the cases, only 38 (30.4%) were consulted by the nutrition department, of which 1 (2.6%) did not receive nutrition education after consultation., Conclusions: At present, the incidence of preoperative malnutrition in patients undergoing cardiac surgery is high in southwest China. The incidence of malnutrition in patients with basic diseases, long term-valvular disease, low TP, low Alb and anemia before operation is higher, and the incidence of malnutrition is hidden in women. The course of disease of women is longer than that of men at the time of treatment, and malnutrition is more likely to occur. The attending physicians should pay attention to the above groups. It is necessary to establish a standardized individualized nutritional intervention program and apply it to actual clinical diagnosis and treatment, so as to ultimately improve the prognosis of patients undergoing cardiac surgery and increase the benefits of patients in treatment.

The transportation industry has entered a new stage from quantity expanding to structure optimization, quality and efficiency improvement, and from respective governance to integrative development. This indicates that the traditional corridor mode allocation dominated by quantity equilibrium can no longer meet the requirements of the new stage. In this paper, we propose a multi-entity programming model based on the economic equilibrium between supply and demand. It not only ensures the economic equilibrium in the market, but also maximizes the social benefits of the whole system, thereby realizing the sustainable development of the transportation system. Also, the Globalsearch algorithm and intlinprog algorithm are designed to solve the problem. The genus Lista Walker, 1859 from China is reviewed. Of the eighteen species treated, five species are described as new: L. furcellata Li Rong, sp. nov., L. serrata Li Rong, sp. nov., L. strumiformis Li Rong, sp. nov., L. yunnanensis Li Rong, sp. nov. and L. zhengi Li Rong, sp. nov. Photographs of adults and genitalia of the new speices are provided. A key based on male genitalia to all Chinese species is provided.

China is one of the largest producers and consumers of antibiotics, and China is a larger producer of livestock farming and aquaculture in the world. The livestock farming and aquaculture industry is a major area of antibiotic misuse, which has caused serious antibiotic residues and environment pollution. The antibiotic residues exceeding the standard may lead to antibiotic resistances in animals or human bodies, which poses a threat to human health. In this context, this study tries to systematically review the current situation of antibiotic misuse in livestock and aquaculture in China, and put forward corresponding regulatiory measures for the central government. Based on the status quo of livestock farming and aquaculture in China, this study reviewed antibiotic misuse in livestock farming and aquaculture and antibiotic resistance in China, introduced China's current policies on antibiotic regulation and the gap between China and developed countries, and analyzed the implications of current regulatory policies on animal health and productivity. At last, we put forward suggestions for the future antibiotic regulation, including strictly implementing the relevant laws and regulations, formulating specific supporting measures, encouraging the research and development of antibiotic substitutes, introducing advanced technologies for supervision and regulation, strengthening the publicity of science popularization and enhancing the public's awareness of the rational use of antibiotics. A new species, Diplolepis valtonyci Zhu, Wang Pujade-Villar sp. nova, is described from Rosa rugosa Thunb. (1784) and R. davurica Pall. (1788) from China using an integrative approach based on molecular and morphological data. Diagnosis, distribution, and biology of the new species are given and illustrated. The phylogenetic relationship between D. valtonyci sp. nova and other Diplolepis species are assessed based on COI and Cytb genes. A key to the Chinese species of Diplolepis is provided.

A new sexual form of a gallwasp, Andricus forni Pujade-Villar Nicholls n. sp., is described from China (Zhejiang province) based on males, females and galls collected on Quercus serrata. Data on the morphology, diagnosis, distribution and biology of the new species are provided. Molecular data are also provided to support this species. A key to Asian Andricus gallwasp species with similar integral leaf galls is presented. Finally we discuss the taxonomic status of Asian Andricus making these integral leaf galls, including uncertainty on the validity of both Andricus quercicola and A. marmoratus.

Heavy metals in reclaimed water are a global problem that leads to ecological risks for the replenishment water body. This study investigated concentrations and ecological risks posed by heavy metals in SH River, Beijing, which is supplied by reclaimed water. Results showed that Cr was not detected in the sample, Cd and Pb exceeded threshold values according to regulations by 1.19% and 25.00%, respectively. The characterization of temporal and spatial of heavy metals was studied. The potential ecological risks posed by heavy metals in SH River were found to be low and safe. The risk decreased in the order Pb > Cu > Zn > Ni > Cd > As by comprehensive index assessment; this changed to Pb > Cd > As > Ni > Cu > Zn according to potential ecological risk assessment. Pb posed the greatest ecological risks and was identified as most contaminated metal. According to discussion of sampling sites and water quality, it was proposed that reclaimed water and exogenous discharges were the main sources of the heavy metals identified. This should be considered when developing catchment management strategies for heavy metals elimination and protection of the aquatic environment. If a higher level of ecological risk management is required, Pb, Cd, and Cu should be considered first and should be removed in situ through ecological remediation methods. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Reclaimed water and exogenous discharges were the main sources of the heavy metals identified. The original description of Parandricus mairei Kieffer, 1906 included a misinterpretation of a relevant forewing trait. The species was subsequently transferred to the genus Andricus, despite presenting two very peculiar morphological characters, namely a simple tarsal claw and the absence of irradiating carinae on the lower face. Similarly, the original descriptions of Andricus deqingis Wang, Gui, Chen, 2013 and A. flavus Pujade-Villar, Wang, Guo Chen, 2014 included some relevant mistakes. Here, we present the results of a molecular analysis that reveals that individuals of the three species are genetically very similar; supporting the proposal that A. mairei is a senior synonym of the other two species, A. deqingis n. syn. and A. flavus n. syn. In addition, our results indicate that Parandricus renders Andricus paraphyletic, which supports that Parandricus is a junior synonym of Andricus. We re-describe and illustrate the relevant characters of A. mairei and provide additional comments on the characters erroneously interpreted in the former descriptions and give notes about the biology and intraspecific variability.

Objective: The risk factors and the impact of NAI treatments in patients with severe influenza A-associated pneumonia remain unclear., Methods: A multicenter, retrospective, observational study was conducted in Zhejiang, China during a severe influenza epidemic in August 2017-May 2018. Clinical records of patients (>14 y) hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed influenza A virus infection and who developed severe pneumonia were compared to those with mild-to-moderate pneumonia. Risk factors related to pneumonia severity and effects of NAI treatments (monotherapy and combination of peramivir and oseltamivir) were analyzed., Results: 202 patients with influenza A-associated severe pneumonia were enrolled, of whom 84 (41.6%) had died. Male gender (OR = 1.782; 95% CI: 1.089-2.917; P = 0.022), chronic pulmonary disease (OR = 2.581; 95% CI: 1.447-4.603; P = 0.001) and diabetes mellitus (OR = 2.042; 95% CI: 1.135-3.673; P = 0.017) were risk factors related to influenza A pneumonia severity. In cox proportional hazards model, severe pneumonia patients treated with double dose oseltamivir (300mg/d) had a better survival rate compared to those receiving a single dose (150 mg/d) (HR = 0.475; 95%CI: 0.254-0.887; P = 0.019). However, different doses of peramivir (300 mg/d vs. 600 mg/d) and combination therapy (oseltamivir-peramivir vs. monotherapy) showed no differences in 60-day mortality (P = 0.392 and P = 0.658, respectively)., Conclusions: Patients with male gender, chronic pulmonary disease, or diabetes mellitus were at high risk of developing severe pneumonia after influenza A infection. Background: We evaluated factors associated with mortality in patients with moderate/severe generalized tetanus., Methods: This retrospective study included patients with moderate/severe generalized tetanus admitted to the Affiliated Hospital of Nantong University (China) between January 2005 and January 2017. Clinical data were extracted from medical records. Patients were divided into two groups based on outcome (survival or death). Factors associated with mortality were analyzed using univariate and multivariate logistic regression., Results: Seventy-five patients were included (57.3% male; age, 57.9 ± 18.4 years; APACHE II score, 10.6 ± 3.4; severe tetanus, 49.3%; mortality, 25.3%). Multivariate analysis identified severe tetanus (odds ratio [OR], 30.364; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.459-374.896) and APACHE II score (OR, 1.536; 95%CI, 1.051-2.243) as positively associated with mortality, whereas high-calorie nutrition (OR, 0.027; 95%CI, 0.002-0.359) and dexmedetomidine use (OR, 0.035; 95%CI, 0.003-0.467) were negatively associated with mortality (all P < 0.05)., Conclusion: Tetanus severity and APACHE II score were associated with mortality in patients with generalized tetanus, whereas high-calorie nutrition and dexmedetomidine use reduced the odds of death. A total of 18 critical patients were admitted into 3 ICUs of Sichuan Provincial People's Hospital. There were 8 females and 10 males with an average age of 46 ± 23 years and a mean score of APACHE II 11 ± 6. There were extremity fractures (n = 16, 88.9%), chest traumas (n = 11, 61.1%), head injuries (n = 8, 44.4%) and pelvic fractures (n = 9, 50%) . All of them received VIPC plan for early stage resuscitation and CRASHPLAN for further evaluations. And individual treatment was planned and implemented by multidisciplinary specialists., Results: During ICU stay, 7 patients (38.9%) suffered acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Among them, noninvasive ventilation (n = 2) and intubation and mechanical ventilation (n = 5) were implemented. Ten septic patients (55.6%) received antibiotic therapy, 6 with severe head injury accepted Lund's concept for brain protection and 13 (72.2%) underwent 20 operations. Sixteen patients (88.9%) were discharged and another 2 (11.1%) remained comatose in hospital., Conclusion: Earthquake-related critical patients have complicated disease situations. And centralized salvage, optimal strategy and algorithm may improve their outcomes.

Coxsackievirus 16 (CA16) is one of the major pathogens associated with hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) in infants and young children. In recent years, CA16 and human enterovirus 71 (EV71) have often circulated alternatively or together in the Western Pacific region, which has become an important public health problem in this region. HFMD caused by CA16 infection is generally thought to be mild and self-limiting. However, recently several severe and fatal cases involving CA16 have been reported. Studies have shown that co-infection with CA16 and EV71 can cause serious complications in the central nervous system (CNS) and increase the chance of genetic recombination, which may be responsible for the large HFMD outbreak in Mainland China in 2008. For these reasons, recent studies have focused on the virological characteristics of CA16 and the development of CA16-related diagnostic reagents and vaccines.

Health inequality is a problem with great political importance all over the world. Urban-rural inequality in health has attracted great attentions in recent years in China, but very few researches have been undertaken into regional discrepancies in health. This research aims at measuring the degree of regional health inequality in China and identifying its determinants. Indicators for health, socioeconomic status, health resources and health services delivery were selected through Delphi consultations from 18 experts. With cross-sectional data from 31 provinces, composite health indexes were generated. The regional inequality in health was described by Lorenz curve and measured by Gini coefficient. The determinants of health inequality were identified through canonical correlation analysis. The results showed that there existed distinct regional disparities in health in China, which were mainly reflected in "Maternal & Child Health" and "Infectious Diseases", not in the most commonly used health indicator average life expectancy. The regional health inequality in China was increasing with the rapid economic growth. The regional health inequality was associated with not only the distribution of wealth, but also the distribution of health resources and primary health care services. Policy makers need to be aware of three major challenges when they try to achieve and maintain equality in distribution of health: First, the most commonly used health indicators are not necessarily sensitive enough to detect health inequalities. Second, increase in health inequality is often accompanied with rapid economic growth and increase in life expectancy. Countries in transition are facing the greatest challenge in developing a fair and equitable health care system. Finally, investment in health resources does bring about differences in distribution of health. However, primary health care plays a more important role than hospital services in reducing regional disparities in health.

Forty simple sequence repeats (SSRs) were used to assess the changes of diversity in 310 major Chinese rice cultivars grown during the 1950s-1990s. Of the 40 SSR loci, 39 were polymorphic. A total of 221 alleles were detected with an average of 5.7 alleles per locus (Na). The Nei's genetic diversity index (He) varied drastically among the loci (0.207 to 0.874, mean 0.625). Comparing the temporal changes in Na and He, the cultivars from the 1950s had more alleles and higher He scores than the cultivars from the other four decades. Analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) indicated that the genetic differentiation among the five decades was not significant in the whole set, but significant within indica and japonica. More changes among the decades were revealed in indica cultivars than in japonica cultivars. Some alleles had been lost in current rice cultivars in the 1990s, occurring more frequently in indica. These results suggest that more elite alien genetic resources should be explored to widen the genetic backgrounds of rice cultivars currently grown in China.

The genus Xanthomonas contains plant pathogens exhibiting innate resistance to a range of antimicrobial agents. In other genera, multidrug resistance is mediated by a synergy between a low-permeability outer membrane and expression of a number of multidrug efflux systems. This report describes the isolation of a novel gene cluster xmeRSA from Xanthomonas strain IG-8 that mediates copper chloride resistance. Subsequent analysis of these genes showed that they were responsible for the high level of multiple resistance in this strain and were homologues of the sme system of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. Knock-out mutants of this gene cluster indicate that these genes are required for the copper resistance phenotype of strain IG-8. Expression analysis using lacZ fusions indicates that the genes are regulated by copper and other antimicrobials. Bioinformatic analysis suggests that these genes were acquired by horizontal gene transfer.
