Photocatalytic reactions during the daytime, alongside aqueous-phase reactions occurring during both daytime and nighttime, are identified as the two primary processes facilitating the conversion of aerosol iron (Fe) from the insoluble state to the soluble state within the atmospheric environment. This study investigated the levels of total Fe (Fe T) and soluble Fe (Fe S) in PM 2.5 samples collected during daytime and nighttime in Qingdao, a coastal city in eastern China, evaluating the distinctive roles of these two pathways in enhancing aerosol Fe solubility (%Fe S , defined as the ratio of Fe S to Fe T). Under clean and humid conditions, characterized by prevailing sea breezes and a relative humidity (RH) typically above 80 %, an average daytime %Fe S of 8.7 % was observed, which systematically exceeded the nighttime %Fe S (6.3 %). Photochemical conversions involving oxalate contributed to the higher %Fe S observed during daytime. Conversely, in scenarios where air masses originated from inland areas and exhibited slightly polluted, daytime %Fe S (3.7 %) was noted to be lower than the nighttime %Fe S (5.8 %). This discrepancy was attributable to the variations in RH, with nighttime RH averaging around 77 %, conducive to the more efficient generation of acidic compounds, thereby accelerating Fe S production compared to the daytime, when RH was only about 62 %. Furthermore, the oxidation rates of sulfur (SOR) displayed a strong correlation with RH, particularly when RH fell below 75 %. A 10 % increase in RH corresponded to a 7.6 % rise in SOR, which served as the primary driver of the higher aerosol acidity and %Fe S at night. These findings highlight the RH-dependent activation of aqueous-phase reactions and the augmentation of daytime photocatalysis in the formation of Fe S in the coastal moist atmosphere. The Bayan Obo deposit in northern China is an ultra-large Fe–REE–Nb deposit. The occurrences, and geochemical characteristics of thorium in iron ores from the Bayan Obo Main Ore Body were examined using chemical analysis, field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectrometer, and automatic mineral analysis software. Results identified that 91.69% of ThO2 in the combined samples was mainly distributed in rare earth minerals (bastnaesite, huanghoite, monazite; 56.43% abundance in the samples), iron minerals (magnetite, hematite, pyrite; 20.97%), niobium minerals (aeschynite; 14.29%), and gangue minerals (aegirine, riebeckite, mica, dolomite, apatite, fluorite; 4.22%). An unidentified portion (4.09%) of ThO2 may occur in other niobium minerals (niobite, ilmenorutile, pyrochlore). Only a few independent minerals of thorium occur in the iron ore samples. Thorium mainly occurs in rare earth minerals in the form of isomorphic substitution. Analyses of the geochemical characteristics of the major elements indicate that thorium mineralization in the Main Ore Body was related to alkali metasomatism, which provided source material and favorable porosity for hydrothermal mineralization. Trace elements such as Sc, Nb, Zr, and Ta have higher correlation coefficients with thorium, which resulted from being related to the relevant minerals formed during thorium mineralization. In addition, correlation analysis of ThO2 and TFe, and REO and TFe in the six types of iron ore samples showed that ThO2 did not always account for the highest distribution rate in rare earth minerals, and the main occurrence minerals of ThO2 were closely related to iron ore types. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) constitutes a substantial portion of the global carbon cycle and serves as the largest reservoir of reactive carbon on Earth. Studying DOM's sources, molecular compositions, and reactivity is central to understanding the fate and environmental effects of organic carbon, yet, links between DOM composition and reactivity remain to be established. In this study, stable carbon isotopic composition and ultrahigh-resolution Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS) were combined with degradation experiments to comprehensively study DOM's properties in the major rivers across the Pearl River Delta (PRD) in South China. The increasing δ13C-DOC along the Pearl River at the PRD suggests that terrestrial DOM from upstream was gradually diluted by local processes. Although affected by different interaction patterns of multiple sources, a major component of DOM, enriched in CHO and lignins, is molecularly indistinguishable in different rivers (molecular Bray-Curtis dissimilarity of 15%–31%). The photo-degradation removed 34% (PDOC%) of initial DOM within 14 days, twice that by biodegradation (BDOC%). In contrast to earlier research, the distinctive integration of molecular characterization with DOM degradation kinetics indicates that both regional (common shared molecules) and local (partial shared and unique molecules) derived DOM play a collective role in governing the bio-degradation kinetics of DOM, while the photo-degradation kinetics of DOM are barely correlated to molecular composition. The thorough investigation of DOM molecular composition and its correlation with bulk DOM properties in the PRD region, though requiring further investigation into its mechanisms, offers valuable insights into the role of riverine DOM in coastal hypoxia and the global carbon cycle. Wind induced flow velocity patterns and associated thermal destratification can drive to hypoxia reduction in large shallow lakes. The effects of wind induced hydrodynamic changes on destratification and hypoxia reduction were investigated at the Meiling bay (N 31° 22′ 56.4″, E 120° 9′ 38.3″) of Lake Taihu, China. Vertical flow velocity profile analysis showed surface flow velocities consistency with the wind field and lower flow velocity profiles were also consistent (but with delay response time) when the wind speed was higher than 6.2 m/s. Wind field and temperature found the control parameters for hypoxia reduction and for water quality conditions at the surface and bottom profiles of lake. The critical temperature for hypoxia reduction at the surface and the bottom profile was ≤24.1C° (below which hypoxic conditions were found reduced). Strong prevailing wind field (onshore wind directions ESE, SE, SSE and E, wind speed ranges of 2.4–9.1 m/s) reduced the temperature (22C° to 24.1C°) caused reduction of hypoxia at the near surface with a rise in water levels whereas, low to medium prevailing wind field did not supported destratification which increased temperature resulting in increased hypoxia. Non-prevailing wind directions (offshore) were not found supportive for the reduction of hypoxia in study area due to less variable wind field. Daytime wind field found more variable (as compared to night time) which increased the thermal destratification during daytime and found supportive for destratification and hypoxia reduction. The second order exponential correlation found between surface temperature and Chlorophyll-a (R 2 : 0.2858, Adjusted R-square: 0.2144 RMSE: 4.395), Dissolved Oxygen (R 2 : 0.596, Adjusted R-square: 0.5942, RMSE: 0.3042) concentrations. Shallow lakes are highly sensitive to respond internal nutrient loading due to wind-induced flow velocity effects. Wind-induced flow velocity effects on nutrient suspension were investigated at a long narrow bay of large shallow Lake Taihu, the third largest freshwater lake in China. Wind-induced reverse/compensation flow and consistent flow field probabilities at vertical column of the water were measured. The probabilities between the wind field and the flow velocities provided a strong correlation at the surface (80.6%) and the bottom (65.1%) layers of water profile. Vertical flow velocity profile analysis provided the evidence of delay response time to wind field at the bottom layer of lake water. Strong wind field generated by the west (W) and west-north-west (WNW) winds produced displaced water movements in opposite directions to the prevailing flow field. An exponential correlation was observed between the current velocities of the surface and the bottom layers while considering wind speed as a control factor. A linear model was developed to correlate the wind field-induced flow velocity impacts on nutrient concentration at the surface and bottom layers. Results showed that dominant wind directions (ENE, E, and ESE) had a maximum nutrient resuspension contribution (nutrient resuspension potential) of 34.7 and 43.6% at the surface and the bottom profile layers, respectively. Total suspended solids (TSS), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) average concentrations were 6.38, 1.5, and 0.03 mg/L during our field experiment at Eastern Bay of Lake Taihu. Overall, wind-induced low-to-moderate hydrodynamic disturbances contributed more in nutrient resuspension at Eastern Bay of Lake Taihu. The present study can be used to understand the linkage between wind-induced flow velocities and nutrient concentrations for shallow lakes (with uniform morphology and deep margins) water quality management and to develop further models. Abstract: A heavy dust storm that occurred in Northwestern China during April 24–30 2010 was studied using observational data along with the Fu–Liou radiative transfer model. The dust storm was originated from Mongolia and affected more than 10 provinces of China. Our results showed that dust aerosols have a significant impact on the radiative energy budget. At Minqin (102.959°E, 38.607°N) and Semi-Arid Climate and Environment Observatory of Lanzhou University (SACOL, 104.13°E, 35.95°N) sites, the net radiative forcing (RF) ranged from 5.93 to 35.7Wm−2 at the top of the atmosphere (TOA), −6.3 to −30.94Wm−2 at surface, and 16.77 to 56.32Wm−2 in the atmosphere. The maximum net radiative heating rate reached 5.89K at 1.5km on 24 April at the Minqin station and 4.46K at 2.2km on 29 April at the SACOL station. Our results also indicated that the radiative effect of dust aerosols is affected by aerosol optical depth (AOD), single-scattering albedo (SSA) and surface albedo. Dust aerosols from the desert areas of China can be lifted to the upper troposphere and transported eastward by the westerly, affecting regional and local air pollution process. In this paper, we analyzed the long-range transport of dust and its impact on the haze-fog process that occurred in Tianjin from 23 November to 5 December 2018. Satellite and ERA5 reanalysis data revealed that dust from northwestern China was transported to eastern China by the westerly flow behind the troughs, which subsequently enhanced the air pollution in Tianjin area. On 26 November and 2 December, the visibility was less than 2 km with a relative humidity (RH) over 90%, indicating there was fog weather in Tianjin. The dust influx from the northwest direction mixed with ground pollutants, increased the PM 2.5 and PM 10 mass concentrations and enhanced the air pollution with the cumulative peak value of the PM 2.5 mass concentration reaching over 300 μg/m3 on 26 November. On 27 November and 3 December, the wind speed increased and large dust particles were transported to Tianjin, the PM 10 mass concentration exceeded a much higher value of 550 μg/m3 whereas the PM 2.5 mass concentration decreased to its lowest value, indicating dust weather followed the typical haze-fog pollution period in Tianjin. The ground lidar observations indicated that a large amount of non-spherical dust aerosols transmitted to Tianjin at 1.5~2.5 km height and settled down near the ground, which substantially affected the aerosol optical characteristics and air quality over the area. Recovery of tide-receiving is considered to improve the water quality in the Lianjiang River, a severely polluted and tide-influenced river connected to the South China Sea. A tide-receiving scenario, i.e., keeping the tide gate open, is compared with the other scenario representing the non-tide-receiving condition, i.e., blocking the tide flow during the flood phase, by numerical simulations based on the EFDC (Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code) model. The impacts of tide receiving were evaluated by the variation in the concentration of ammonia and its exporting fluxes, mainly in the downstream part of the river. With more water mass coming into the river, in the tide-receiving scenario, the averaged concentration of ammonia reduced by 20–40%, with the most significant decrease of 0.64 g m−3. However, the exporting flux of ammonia has decreased in the tide-receiving scenario, as the consequence of the back–forth oscillation of tidal current. In the tide-receiving scenario, the time series of ammonia concentration approximately followed the tidal oscillation, with increased concentration during the ebb tide and reduction in the flood tide. In the non-tide-receiving scenario, the ammonia concentration decreases when the tide gate is open which results in further intrusion of seawater. This was followed by an increase in ammonia concentration again after the currents shift seaward and water mass with higher concentration from the upstream part is transported downstream. Given the identical ammonia input and river runoff, the ammonia concentration stays lower in the tide-receiving scenario, except for short periods after the tide gate opening and neap tides in the downstream part which lasts for around half a day. This study highlights the importance of hydrodynamic condition, specifically tidal oscillation, in the semi-diurnal and fortnight cycles, for the transportation of waterborne materials. Water level fluctuation (WLF) in shallow lakes in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River has been a concern of many researchers. This work aims to investigate the effects of climate change and regulation of floodgates and the Three Gorges Dam (TGD) on WLF and lake volume in Huayang Lakes during the past 52 years. The results revealed that precipitation is the dominant factor that leads to seasonal variation of lake levels, whereas regulation of floodgates and TGD are the key drivers of hydrology regime change in the past 20 years. Natural lake regime has higher water level when there is more precipitation and less lake volume. Floodgates and TGD regulations have changed this pattern since 2003, causing less difference in water level in spite of more precipitation and lake recession. Under the combined impacts of floodgates and TGD regulations, Huayang Lakes have experienced a prolonged outflow time since 2003 and the contribution rate caused by the floodgates and TGD regulations has increased by 19.90%. Additionally, the water level of Huayang Lakes decreased by approximately 0.3~0.5 m from September to November, but it showed no alteration from January to March in the past two decades. This indicated that floodgate regulations used for agricultural irrigation and fishery culture dominate the hydrology regime in winter and early spring. The soluble fractions of iron (Fe S) and manganese (Mn S) in atmospheric aerosols potentially impact human health and ocean ecosystems. This study investigated a persistent haze-to-dust process observed in winter Qingdao, a coastal city in Northern China, focusing on the aerosol sources and acidification process affecting the dissolution of Fe and Mn. It was found that Fe S in PM 2.5 peaked during the intermingling of dust plumes with local haze, while other species of Fe and Mn reached their maximal levels coinciding with PM 10. Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) analysis determined that aged dust was the main source of Fe S in PM 2.5 , accounting for 44.0%, while fresh dust contributed just 1.9%. Conversely, fresh dust played a more significant role in PM 10 , contributing 8.9% to Fe S. Similar trends were observed in the initial dust and dust swing periods, aged dust was the dominant contributor to Fe S , but fresh dust accounted for a higher fraction in PM 10 (11.5%) than in PM 2.5 (4.9%). In contrast, Mn S levels, with high solubility (%Mn S), were mainly from fresh dust (27.9% and 63.2% in PM 2.5 and PM 10 , respectively). The PMF estimated %Mn S in fresh dust at 17.0% for PM 2.5 and 19.4% for PM 10 , considerably higher than Fe solubility (%Fe S) at 0.3% and 0.1% in the corresponding particulate sizes. Additionally, %Fe S correlated more strongly with sulfate and nitrate per unit Fe mass (R2 = 0.68 and 0.79 in PM 2.5 and PM 10) than %Mn S (R2 = 0.49 and 0.50), suggesting a more profound impact of acidification on Fe dissolution. Further analysis suggests liquid water content rather than pH played a more critical role during the acidification process within fine particles. This study successfully estimated the solubility of Fe and Mn within various aerosols, providing valuable information and advancing our understanding of their dissolution and potential health and ecosystem impacts. Lake Taihu was chosen as a case for parameter uncertainty and sensitivity analysis of water quality simulation in large shallow lakes. Forty parameters in Environmental Fluid Dynamic Code model (EFDC) were filtered and analyzed. The results showed that parameters had a considerable influence on simulation and three groups of parameters related to algal kinetics (i.e. PMc, BMRc and PRRc), light (KeChl) and temperature (KTG1c) were very sensitive. For shallow lakes with frequent algal blooms, light extinction due to Chlorophyll- a is also a sensitive parameter. While the temperature effect coefficient for algal growth is sensitive for lakes with seasonal temperature variation. Sensitive parameters and their relevant uncertainty varied spatially. For high nutrients and algae concentration subareas, temperature was more likely to be a limiting factor, whereas sensitive factors could be light in lower concentration subareas. Since most sensitive parameters were related to algae, uncertainty in simulation increased with increasing algal kinetic processes over time and varied in different subareas. Lower nutrients and algae concentration subareas were more easily influenced by model parameters while nearshore areas were highly influenced by boundary conditions. For better simulation of water quality, variable stoichiometry phytoplankton models should be considered and zooplankton need to be integrated into the model explicitly rather than a fixed predation rate. Sulfate and nitrate formed on dust aerosols can considerably affect particles' physicochemical properties due to their high hygroscopicity. Dust reverse-transport (DRT) events can occur in eastern China when dust plumes undergo a distinct turn caused by Asian highs or cyclones, resulting in the re-appearance of the dust plume in one place but with anthropogenic pollutants mixed in. In this study, three DRT events were identified at a coastal city, Qingdao. The secondary sulfate and nitrate in PM 2.5 collected during the DRT events were estimated according to the mass concentration of water-soluble ions and dust tracer metal. Several key factors, including heterogeneous reactions on aerosols, photochemical conversions in the air, and precursors' abundance in dust plumes, affected the aging of dust plumes. In the presence of adequate ammonium and high-level oxidants in the air, sulfate and nitrate were efficiently produced under moderate/high humidity conditions when DRT events occurred to the south of Qingdao. The proportions of the secondary sulfate/nitrate in total concentrations exceeded 90%, in which 20.8%–43.1% of secondary nitrate was formed on dust particles. In contrast, when the DRT occurred to the north of Qingdao with low relative humidity and low [NH 4 +]/[SO 4 2−] ratio, the growth of sulfate and nitrate was small. Wind-blown dust plays a crucial role in air quality, biogeochemical cycles, and climate change. In East Asia, one of the main dust source regions in the world, dust storms frequently engulf eastern China, with a substantial negative effect on air pollution and the ecological environment. By integrating multiple observations and the online coupled meteorology-chemistry model WRF-Chem, a severe dust storm event originating from the Gobi Desert in early May 2017 is comprehensively analyzed from the perspective of emission estimation, meteorological feedback, and the possible impact on the ecological environment. We optimize the size distribution of dust aerosol by applying local observations to better represent dust emission and regional transport in the model. Both the observations and simulations indicate that the dust storm broke out with PM 10 concentrations exceeding 1500 μg/m3 in the source region of the Gobi Desert, and was quickly transported downwind, deteriorating the air quality of cities in northern and eastern China. Moreover, we find that the dust storm significantly perturbed the temperature stratification, since mineral dust is a radiatively active aerosol and can absorb both short- and long-wave radiation. The upper dust layer at an altitude of around 2–3 km became warmer by 1–2 °C while the surface temperature decreased by about 2 °C, making the planetary boundary layer more stable and indirectly aggravating local air pollution near the ground in eastern China. Furthermore, during this event, a large amount of dust deposition increased ocean primary productivity, with the maximum Chlorophyll-a concentration rising from 4 to 14 mg/m3 in the central area of the Yellow Sea. To improve the PM 2.5 forecast during severe haze episodes, we developed a data assimilation system based on the four-dimensional local ensemble transform Kalman filter (4D-LETKF) and the WRF-Chem model to assimilate surface PM 2.5 observations. The data assimilation system was successful in optimizing the initial PM 2.5 mass concentrations. The root-mean-square error (RMSE) of the initial PM 2.5 concentrations after assimilation decreased at 76.75% of the stations and the RMSE reduction exceeds 30% at 20.7% of the stations. The correlation coefficients for the PM 2.5 analyses increased by more than 0.3 at 33% of the stations. The forecasts for the spatial distribution and evolution of the haze were improved remarkably after assimilation while the forecasts without assimilation usually significantly underestimated the PM 2.5 mass concentrations during the severe haze episodes. The RMSE of the 24-h forecasts after assimilation can be reduced by 32.02% in the polluted regions. During haze episodes, the 48-h forecasts after assimilation can benefit from the assimilation to a similar extent with the 24-h forecasts. The long retention of dust air masses in polluted areas, especially in winter, may efficiently change the physicochemical properties of aerosols, causing additional health and ecological effects. A large-scale haze-to-dust weather event occurred in the North China Plain (NCP) region during the autumn-to-winter transition period in 2018, affecting the coastal city Qingdao several times between Nov. 27th and Dec. 1st. To study the evolution of the pollution process, we analyzed the chemical characteristics of PM 2.5 and PM 10 - 2.5 and source apportionments of PM 2.5 and PM 10, The dust stagnated around NCP and moved out and back to the site, noted as dust swing process, promoting SO 4 2- formation in PM 2.5 and NO 3 - formation in PM 10 - 2.5 . Source apportionments were analyzed using the Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) receptor model and weighted potential source contribution function (WPSCF). Before the dust invasion, Qingdao was influenced by severe haze; waste incineration and coal burning were the major contributors (~80 %) to PM 2.5 , and the source region was in the southwest of Shandong Province. During the initial dust event, mineral dust and the mixed factor of dust and sea salt were the major contributors (46.0 % of PM 2.5 and 86.5 % of PM 10 ). During the polluted dust period, the contributions of regional transported biomass burning (22.3 %), vehicle emissions (20.8 %), and secondary aerosols (33.8 %) to PM 2.5 from the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region significantly increased. The secondary aerosols source was more regional than that of vehicle emissions and biomass burning and contributed considerably to PM 10 (30.8 %) during the dust swing process. The disappearance of submerged aquatic vegetation caused by the use of purse seine in productive fishery has aroused the attention of the national government. In order to restore aquatic vegetation, the government has removed the seine nets on the Huayanghe Lake's surface. Here, fourteen cruises were conducted in the Huayanghe Lakes from 2016 to 2019 to study the response of water quality and phytoplankton communities to rapidly recovering aquatic vegetation. The results showed that the restoration of aquatic vegetation increased the Secchi depth (from 65.36 to 105.52 cm) and dissolved oxygen (from 8.98 to 12.17 mg/L), while the concentration of total nitrogen (from 0.98 to 0.53 mg/L), and total phosphorus (from 0.04 to 0.02 mg/L) decreased, resulting in a 35.3% and 11.6% reduction in the total phytoplankton density and chlorophyll ɑ, respectively. In addition, the restoration of aquatic vegetation significantly increased Shannon-Wiener diversity, Margalef richness indices by 51.6% and 40.1%. We also observed that phytoplankton density exhibited significant changes based on nonmetric multidimensional scaling analysis (NMDS). In Lake Huangda, the coverage of aquatic vegetation was as high as 80%. We also observed that after the restoration of aquatic vegetation, the proportion of cyanobacteria decreased significantly by 21%. In this study, nutrient and heavy metal contamination in surface sediments of the Xiashan stream were investigated. Determining pollution degree of nutrient and heavy metal were the main objectives of this investigation. For this reason, the concentrations of total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), seven heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd, Cr, Ni, Hg), and metalloid (As) were analyzed at 55 sampling sites. The mean TN concentration in surface sediments was 5.007 g/kg, while the mean TP concentration was 0.385 g/kg. Based on the sediment quality guideline (SQG s ) and background values of Chinese soil and sediment, the majority of the mean TN concentrations in surface sediments were higher than their background values, while the TP concentrations were different from those observed for TN. For heavy metal concentrations in surface sediments, most of sampling stations were higher than their background values. The mean geo-accumulation (I geo ) indices for heavy metals were ranked as follows: Cd > Hg > Cu > Zn > Pb > Ni > Cr > As. The potential ecological risk index (RI) indicated heavy metal contamination level in Xiashan stream was very high ecological risk. According to I geo and RI values, heavy metals especially Cd and Hg are influenced significantly by anthropogenic activities. Cd and Hg are not only as pollutant but also considerable contributor to ecological risk. Multivariate statistical investigations showed that there is a significant and positive correlation between Pb, As, and Cd. Cu, Ni, and Cr have similar characteristic and therefore probably originated from the same sources. Suggested by the results, it is necessary to control nitrogen and heavy metal contamination caused by human activities in the study area.
