2. Exogenous application of 5-NGS increased osmotic stress resistance by improving leaf photosynthetic physiology and antioxidant capacity in maize.

Background: Drought is a critical limiting factor affecting the growth and development of spring maize (Zea mays L.) seedlings in northeastern China. Sodium 5-nitroguaiacol (5-NGS) has been found to enhance plant cell metabolism and promote seedling growth, which may increase drought tolerance. Methods: In the present study, we investigated the response of maize seedlings to foliar application of a 5-NGS solution under osmotic stress induced by polyethylene glycol (PEG-6000). Four treatment groups were established: foliar application of distilled water (CK), foliar application of 5-NGS (NS), osmotic stress + foliar application of distilled water (D), and osmotic stress + foliar application of 5-NGS (DN). Plant characteristics including growth and photosynthetic and antioxidant capacities under the four treatments were evaluated. Results: The results showed that under osmotic stress, the growth of maize seedlings was inhibited, and both the photosynthetic and antioxidant capacities were weakened. Additionally, there were significant increases in the proline and soluble sugar contents and a decrease in seedling relative water content (RWC). However, applying 5-NGS alleviated the impact of osmotic stress on maize seedling growth parameters, particularly the belowground biomass, with a dry mass change of less than 5% and increased relative water content (RWC). Moreover, treatment with 5-NGS mitigated the inhibition of photosynthesis caused by osmotic stress by restoring the net photosynthetic rate (Pn) through an increase in chlorophyll content, photosynthetic electron transport, and intercellular CO
2 concentration (Ci). Furthermore, the activity of antioxidant enzymes in the aboveground parts recovered, resulting in an approximately 25% decrease in both malondialdehyde (MDA) and H2 O2 . Remarkably, the activity of enzymes in the underground parts exhibited more significant changes, with the contents of MDA and H2 O2 decreasing by more than 50%. Finally, 5-NGS stimulated the dual roles of soluble sugars as osmoprotectants and energy sources for metabolism under osmotic stress, and the proline content increased by more than 30%. We found that 5-NGS played a role in the accumulation of photosynthates and the effective distribution of resources in maize seedlings. Conclusions: Based on these results, we determined that foliar application of 5-NGS may improve osmotic stress tolerance in maize seedlings. Few tourism studies have focused on tourists who have been victims of a disaster. Their destination attachment has implications for re-establishment of market confidence and resilience. Structural equation modelling of data from 242 tourists who were victims of the Jiuzhaigou earthquake was used to explore their feelings of attachment. The results confirm that earthquake-affected tourists can generate positive emotional attachment toward the destination. Destination attachment is related to such factors as positive emotions, social support, and severity of disaster exposure. Positive emotions mediate the relationships between severity of disaster exposure, social support and destination attachment. It is revealed that experiences of a disaster event can be a turning point, prompting positive change in tourist-destination relationships across the destination life-cycle. Implications for emergency management and for post-disaster market recovery are presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

4. Acute, Recent and Past HEV Infection among Voluntary Blood Donors in China: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Introduction: Hepatitis E virus is one of new threats to blood safety which was usually considered to be transmitted via fecal-oral route. China is one of the hyperendemic regions where frequent outbreaks of hepatitis E are noted. However, the overall prevalence of HEV infection among mainland Chinese blood donors is not clear until now. Method: The peer-reviewed literatures reporting the prevalence of HEV in Chinese blood donors were identified by systematic searching of five electronic databases. The systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses statement issued in 2009. Data manipulation and statistical analyses were performed by Stata 12.0. Results: Fourteen eligible articles involving 22 independent studies were included. Pooled prevalence of HEV infection biomarkers (anti-HEV IgG, anti-HEV IgM, RNA and antigen) among mainland Chinese blood donors were 29.2%, 1.1%, 0.1% and 0.1%, respectively which were higher than the data reported in other countries. The analysis of HEV genotypes indicated that the most prevalent strains in Chinese blood donors were genotype 1 and 4. Conclusions: Mainland China is indicated with a relatively higher risk of transmission of hepatitis E through transfusion and the screening of blood donors for HEV RNA, especially in HEV-endemic areas, might reduce the potential risk of HEV infection via transfusion. 5. Do COVID-19 CT features vary between patients from within and outside mainland China? Findings from a meta-analysis.

Background: Chest computerized tomography (CT) plays an important role in detecting patients with suspected coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), however, there are no systematic summaries on whether the chest CT findings of patients within mainland China are applicable to those found in patients outside., Methods: Relevant studies were retrieved comprehensively by searching PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases before 15 April 2022. Quality assessment of diagnostic accuracy studies (QUADAS) was used to evaluate the quality of the included studies, which were divided into two groups according to whether they were in mainland China or outside. Data on diagnostic performance, unilateral or bilateral lung involvement, and typical chest CT imaging appearances were extracted, and then, meta-analyses were performed with R software to compare the CT features of COVID-19 pneumonia between patients from within and outside mainland China., Results: Of the 8,258 studies screened, 19 studies with 3,400 patients in mainland China and 14 studies with 554 outside mainland China were included. Overall, the risk of quality assessment and publication bias was low. The diagnostic value of chest CT is similar between patients from within and outside mainland China (93, 91%). The pooled incidence of unilateral lung involvement (15, 7%), the crazy-paving sign (31, 21%), mixed ground-glass opacities (GGO) and consolidations (51, 35%), air bronchogram (44, 25%), vascular engorgement (59, 33%), bronchial wall thickening (19, 12%), and septal thickening (39, 26%) in patients from mainland China were significantly higher than those from outside; however, the incidence rates of bilateral lung involvement (75, 84%), GGO (78, 87%), consolidations (45, 58%), nodules (12, 17%), and pleural effusion (9, 15%) were significantly lower., Conclusion: Considering that the chest CT features of patients in mainland China may not reflect those of the patients abroad, radiologists and clinicians should be familiar with various CT presentations suggestive of COVID-19 in different regions., Competing Interests: The authors declare that the research was conducted in the absence of any commercial or financial relationships that could be construed as a potential conflict of interest., (Copyright © 2022 Hou, Wang, Li, Xie, He, Guo, Liu, Wang, Zhang and Wang.)

- Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to compare the clinical safety and effectiveness of transurethral bipolar plasmakinetic enucleation of the prostate (PKEP) vs. transurethral bipolar plasmakinetic resection of the prostate (PKRP) in the treatment of benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) more than 80 ml. MATERIAL AND METHODS From June 2015 to February 2019, 179 BPH patients with prostate volume greater than 80 ml were enrolled and separated into a PKEP (n=81) group and a PKRP group (n=98). The patients in the 2 groups were followed up for 6 months. We collected and analyzed data from the international Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), residual urine volume (RUV), quality of life (QOL), maximum urine flow rate (Qmax), and international erectile function index (ILEF-5). The clinical data collected during and after the operation and surgical complications were compared between the 2 groups. RESULTS The PKEP group had significantly shorter operation time, bladder flushing time, indwelling catheter time, and hospitalization time, and has less intraoperative blood loss, intraoperative blood transfusion, postoperative secondary hemorrhage, bladder neck contracture, capsule perforation, and retrograde ejaculation (P<0.05). Compared with the PKRP group, the postoperative IPSS and QOL scores were significantly lower in the PKEP group (P<0.05), while the excision glandular tissue weight and Qmax were significantly improved (P<0.05). There were no significant differences in ILEF-5 scores, RUV, urethral stricture, urinary incontinence, or erectile dysfunction between the 2 groups (p>0.05). CONCLUSIONS PKEP treatment of BPH with a large volume (>80 ml) has the advantages of complete gland resection, good surgical effect, improved surgical safety, and reduced intraoperative and postoperative complications.

- Abstract
Background: All β-agonists are banned as feed additives for growth promotion in animals due to toxic effects on humans after consuming the β-agonist contaminated meats. Phenylethanolamine A (PA) is a newly emerged β-agonist. Thus there is a need to develop highly sensitive and specific analytical methods for the detection of PA in food samples. In this study, the monoclonal antibody (mAb) against PA was produced by hybridoma technology and used for the development of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)., Results: The IC
50 values and limits of detection (LODs) of the ELISA using homogeneous combination of coating antigen/antibody for PA were 0.16 ng mL-1 and 0.011 ng mL-1 , respectively. The cross-reactive (CR) values of the assay with 14 structurally related β-agonists were lower than 0.59%. Swine liver and meat samples were spiked with PA at different content and analysed by ELISA. Acceptable recovery rates of 91.40-105.51% and intra-assay coefficients of variation of 1.56-9.92% (n = 3) were obtained. The ELISA for seven spiked samples was confirmed by LC-MS/MS with a high correlation coefficient of 0.9881., Conclusion: The proposed mAb-based ELISA was highly sensitive and specific for PA and could be used as a quantitative/screening method for PA analysis in food samples. © 2016 Society of Chemical Industry., (© 2016 Society of Chemical Industry.)- Published
