Comprehensive studies on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) within an urban river are urgently needed to carry out strategies to limit their contamination and dispersal. Here, we analyzed 16 PAH occurrences in water, suspended particulate matter (SPM), and sediment monthly for a year in the Maozhou River mainstream (Shenzhen, South China). Monthly rainfall positively correlated with both total PAH concentrations in filtered water (water PAHs) and SPM. Sediment PAH concentration increased from the river source to estuary. Compared to the earlier record, the sediment PAHs decreased at almost all sites due to the high-molecular-weight PAH (≥ 4 rings; especially the 4-ring PAH) degradation, except the estuary site that accumulated more low-molecular-weight PAHs (< 4 rings). Results suggest that the water and SPM PAHs had similar and recent sources (e.g., rainfall and storm runoff) and actively exchanged with each other. The sediment PAHs had relatively different and complicated sources (fossil fuel combustion: 44.0%; oil pollution: 28.4%; biomass burning: 27.6%), and showed a long-term accumulation effect and increasingly weaker source-sink relation with both water and SPM PAHs from river source to estuary. Within the management hierarchy of municipal solid waste (MSW), incineration with energy recovery is a desired and viable option often used in densely populated and economically developed cities. The gaseous and particulate mercury (Hg) emitted from MSW incinerators may accumulate in the soil entering via dry and wet deposition. To investigate the soil Hg level and estimate the effects of the local meteorological and topographical characteristics (e.g., winds and terrain) on the soil Hg distribution, two layers of soil samples around an MSW incinerator in Shenzhen, China were collected and analyzed. Results showed that the Hg levels ranged from 0.012 to 0.136 mg kg and from 0.013 to 0.100 mg kg in the surface and subsurface soils, respectively. Long-term exposure of the soil to atmospheric Hg from the MSW incinerator dominates the spatial pattern of soil Hg. The wind frequency directly affected Hg distribution but not decisively. Interestingly, the variations of Hg level with downwind distance away from the stack were highly consistent with the terrain profile ( r: 0.412-0.748). The effects of winds and terrain on soil Hg distribution and their mechanisms are discussed and general Hg dispersion patterns for transport on terrain are further proposed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Wastewater irrigation can elevate metal concentrations in soils and crops and increase the metal-associated health risks via vegetable ingestion in arid and semiarid northwestern China. Here, we investigated the As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn concentrations in four vegetable species from Dongdagou and Xidagou farmlands in Baiyin, Gansu, China. We evaluated the effects of irrigation type (Dongdagou: industrial wastewater; Xidagou: domestic wastewater) and cultivation mode (open field and greenhouse) on the vegetable metal concentration, metal partitioning, soil-to-plant bioconcentration factor (BCF), and the health risk index. All stream waters, soils, and vegetables were found most severely polluted by As and Cd, with higher severity in the industrial-wastewater-irrigated Dongdagou than the domestic-wastewater-irrigated Xidagou. All vegetables had higher or, at least, comparable metal mass allocated in the shoot than in the root. Greenhouse cultivation could reduce metal-ingestion-associated health risks from edible vegetable biomass by decreasing the soil to plant bioaccumulation (BCF) and the metal concentration. This effect was always significant for all vegetables within Xidagou, and for carrot within Dongdagou. This mitigation effect of greenhouse cultivation could be attributed to the metal sorption by a higher level of soil organic matter and faster growth rate over metal uptake rate in greenhouses compared to open fields. Such mitigation effect was, however, insignificant for leafy vegetables within Dongdagou, when much more severely polluted water for irrigation was applied in greenhouses compared to open fields within Dongdagou. The present study highlights greenhouse cultivation as a potential mitigating approach to providing less-polluted vegetables for residents in the severely polluted area in addition to the source pollution control. In recent decades, the reclamation of lakes has captured 42% of the total lake area of the Yangtze Plain in China and introduced additional pressure on lacustrine water quality. While lacustrine dissolved organic matter (DOM) is critical in regulating biogeochemical processing and aquatic biodiversity, the impact of reclamation on the molecular-level characteristics of lacustrine DOM remains unexplored. Here, the DOM characteristics altered by reclamation practices in the Yangtze Plain lakes were investigated using fluorescence spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry. Results demonstrated that reclamation not only elevated the quantity (on average +32%) but also altered the characteristics and composition of lacustrine DOM. Compared to the natural water sites close by, reclamation sites did not significantly alter the DOM aromaticity but significantly lowered the average molecular weight and increased the biolability of DOM. The chromophoric DOM and humic-like fluorescent components were remarkably elevated, but not the protein-like fluorescent components. More lipid-like and condensed aromatic-like components were detected in the lacustrine DOM as compared to the lignin-like, carbohydrate-like, and protein-like components, which may be driven by the increased microbial processing. Overall, the significant alteration in characteristics and composition of lacustrine DOM highlights the potential impact of reclamation on the DOM biogeochemical cycle and the environmental quality in aquatic ecosystems. Sunlight plays an important role in the photochemical processes of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM), which is closely related to water self-purification and primary productivity of healthy aquatic ecosystem health. The fine particles of haze, a widespread air pollutant, absorb natural ultraviolet (UV) irradiation and have an unknown degree of influence on the photochemical transformation of CDOM. Here, an in-situ experiment investigating how the amount and composition of CDOM changes under hazy conditions was conducted in Ningbo, southeastern China, a city that frequently suffers from seasonal haze pollution. The results indicated that haze attenuated UV light under different weather conditions. The UV intensities were reduced from 1124.90 ± 91.58 to 510.26 ± 40.26 μW cm -2 and 748.54 ± 101.68 to 316.32 ± 40.48 μW cm -2 on sunny and cloudy days, respectively; these values approached those on rainy days (186.97 ± 28.58 μW cm -2 ). Consequently, the loss of dissolved organic carbon during the irradiation test was reduced on hazy days (e.g., from 5.63% to 2.59% on sunny/hazy days). The impact of haze on CDOM photobleaching was further assessed by an excitation-emission matrix (EEM) combined with parallel factor (PARAFAC) analysis. On hazy days, the EEM-PARAFAC components were saved from photobleaching to different degrees; and humic-like substances showed a stronger protective effect from haze than protein-like substances because of their higher photosensitivity. Consequently, haze could cause more terrestrial CDOM to remain in surface water. UV intensity played a critical role in the composition characteristics of CDOM. Fine roots constitute a significant source of plant productivity and litter turnover across terrestrial ecosystems, but less is known about the quantitative and qualitative profile of phenolic compounds within the fine-root architecture, which could regulate the potential contribution of plant roots to the soil organic matter pool. To understand the linkage between traditional macro-elemental and morphological traits of roots and their molecular-level carbon chemistry, we analyzed seasonal variations in monomeric yields of the free, bound, and lignin phenols in fine roots (distal five orders) and leaves of Ardisia quinquegona. Fine roots contained two-fold higher concentrations of bound phenols and three-fold higher concentrations of lignin phenols than leaves. Within fine roots, the concentrations of free and bound phenols decreased with increasing root order, and seasonal variation in the phenolic profile was more evident in lower order than in higher order roots. The morphological and macro-elemental root traits were decoupled from the quantity, composition and tissue association of phenolic compounds, revealing the potential inability of these traditional parameters to capture the molecular identity of phenolic carbon within the fine-root architecture and between fine roots and leaves. Our results highlight the molecular-level heterogeneity in phenolic carbon composition within the fine-root architecture, and imply that traits that capture the molecular identity of the root construct might better predict the decomposition dynamics within fine-root orders., (© 2015 The Authors. Growing evidence has revealed high heterogeneity of fine root networks in both structure and function, with different root orders corporately maintaining trees' physiological activities. However, little information is available on how fine root heterogeneity of trees responds to environmental stresses. We examined concentrations of seven potentially toxic metals (Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, and Pb) within fine root networks and their correlations with root morphological and macro-elemental traits in six Chinese subtropical trees. The contributions of different orders of roots to fine-root metal storage and return were also estimated. Results showed no consistent pattern for the correlation among different metal concentration against root traits. Unlike root metal concentration that generally decreased with root order, root metal storage was commonly lowest in middle root orders. Root senescence was at least comparable to leaf senescence contributing to metal removal. Although the first-order roots constituted 7.2-22.3% of total fine root biomass, they disproportionately contributed to most of metal return fluxes via root senescence. The two distinct root functional modules contributed differentially to metal uptake, allocation, and return, with defensive (lower-order) roots effectively stabilizing and removing toxic metals and bulk buffering (higher-order) roots possessing a persistent but diluted metal pool. Our results suggest a strong association of physiological functions of metal detoxification and metal homeostasis with the structural heterogeneity in fine root architecture.

Fine roots are critical components for plant mercury (Hg) uptake and removal, but the patterns of Hg distribution and turnover within the heterogeneous fine root components and their potential limiting factors are poorly understood. Based on root branching structure, we studied the total Hg (THg) and its cellular partitioning in fine roots in 6 Chinese subtropical trees species and the impacts of root morphological and stoichiometric traits on Hg partitioning. The THg concentration generally decreased with increasing root order, and was higher in cortex than in stele. This concentration significantly correlated with root length, diameter, specific root length, specific root area, and nitrogen concentration, whereas its cytosolic fraction (accounting for <10% of THg) correlated with root carbon and sulfur concentrations. The estimated Hg return flux from dead fine roots outweighed that from leaf litter, and ephemeral first-order roots that constituted 7.2-22.3% of total fine root biomass may have contributed most to this flux (39-71%, depending on tree species and environmental substrate). Our results highlight the high capacity of Hg stabilization and Hg return by lower-order roots and demonstrate that turnover of lower-order roots may be an effective strategy of detoxification in perennial tree species.
