Purpose: Excessive application of nitrogen fertilizers on farmland widely occurs in China, which has been recognized as one of the main sources of non-point pollution. To reduce the nitrogen loss in agricultural soils, some specific biochar can be introduced to increase the water-holding capacity of soils and to reserve soil nutrition. The effects and mechanisms of biochar application on decreasing nutrient losses after fertilization were systematically evaluated and understood through both pot and field experiments. Materials and methods: This study was objected to investigate the effects of neutral biochar (NBC, pH 6.6–7.1) and its combination with urease inhibitor (UI) on nitrogen mitigation and reservation in farmland soil, and the interactions among the mixed soils (biochar, nitrogen fertilizer, and soil) under both pot and field experiments. Results and discussion: The application of straw biochar could reduce the amount of ammonia volatilization in soil. The maximum inhibition of ammonia volatilization loss accounted for 27.67% of fertilizer applications. In field experiments, neutral biochar could reduce the leaching of soil NH4+-N and NO3—-N, and this effect was more evident for NO3—-N (68 mg/kg) compared to no fertilization in the soil layer 20–40 cm. With the addition of neutral biochar and urease inhibitors, the content of soil total nitrogen increased greatly with 1.70 g/kg. Conclusion: Neutral biochar from waste agricultural straw and commercial urease inhibitors were applied for nitrogen reservation in pot and field experiments. The application of neutral biochar played a positive role in lower volatile ammonia loss and higher nitrate content compared to urease inhibitor application only. The magnitude (spatial location, area, and volume) of landslides is a crucial parameter for estimating the quantitative risk and preventing landslide hazards. This study proposes a novel approach to forecast the volume of potential landslides in alpine-canyon terrain by combining the empirical relationship linking landslide volume (V) to characteristics and synthetic aperture radar interferometry (InSAR) technology in the northeast of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, China. First, a historical landslide inventory with detailed characteristics was established by reviewing literature and field investigation. Then, the relationship between volume and characteristics of landslides was analyzed based on the least-squares linear regression of the logarithmic transformation. Finally, the relationships of the colluvial landslides (V = 0.170 × L 0.982 × W 1.589 × H 0.471) and loess landslides (V = 0.170 × L 0.796 × W 2.151 × H 0.048) were obtained after verifying several landslides. The ground deformation rate was generated, and 217 potential landslides were detected using 47 descending Sentinel-1A images acquired from January 11, 2020, to July 16, 2021, and 40 ascending Sentinel-1A images acquired from January 11, 2020, to April 23, 2021. Through the established relationships, the total volumes of all potential colluvial and loess landslides were estimated to be 8.77 × 108 m3 and 5.74 × 108 m3, respectively. This study provides an improved empirical relationship to better forecast the volume of potential landslides in alpine-canyon terrain. Furthermore, the study helps in understanding the future dynamic evolution of potential landslides using InSAR technology, which provides scientific understanding to assess and prevents potential landslide hazards and risks in the Bailong River basin. Landslide risk assessment is important for risk management and loss–damage reduction. Herein, we assessed landslide susceptibility, hazard, and risk in the urban area of Yan'an City, which is located on the Loess Plateau of China and affected by many loess landslides. Based on 1841 slope units mapped in the study area, a random forest machine learning classifier and eight environmental factors influencing landslides were used for a landslide susceptibility assessment. In addition, differential synthetic aperture radar interferometry (DInSAR) technology was used for a hazard assessment. The accuracy of the random forest is 0.903 and the area under the receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve is 0.96. The results show that 16% and 22% of the slope units were classified as being at very high and high-susceptibility levels for landslides, respectively, whereas 16% and 24% of the slope units were at very high and high-hazard levels for landslides, respectively. The landslide risk was obtained based on the susceptibility map and hazard map of landslides. The results show that only 26% of the slope units were located at very high and high-risk levels for landslides and these are mainly concentrated in urban centers. Such risk zones should be taken seriously and their dynamics must be monitored. Our landslide risk map is expected to provide information for planners to help them choose appropriate locations for development schemes and improve integrated geohazard mitigation in Yan'an City. Loess landslides, predominantly triggered by human activity and precipitation, dominate the geomorphological evolution of extensive regions of the Chinese Loess Plateau. Tablelands constitute a large proportion of this Loess Plateau. Although the area has a long history of human occupation, the Bailu Tableland is relatively poorly studied. Recent landslide events along the edge of the tableland significantly affected lives and livelihoods. To develop a better understanding of geomorphological evolution and develop appropriate hazard management and mitigation strategies, we characterized recent landslide activity and determined whether there are discernable trends in activity. We used Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) observations, Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) monitoring, and Digital Terrain Analysis (DTA) to observe significant differences in the position, shape, and magnitude between old and new landslides. The geomorphological evolution of the tableland was initially driven by large landslides, while current and future morphological development is more likely affected by small landslide events. We demonstrate the successful application of InSAR to investigate potential landslides in well-vegetated loess landscapes and show that loess landslides tend to develop on slopes with high relative relief and high topographic wetness associated with gully erosion. Unlike landslides induced by groundwater variations in the Heifangtai and South Jingyang tablelands, precipitation and infrastructure construction form the main controls on landslide activity in the Bailu Tableland. We propose two geomorphological evolution models that describe loess tableland recession caused by landslides. The results from this research contribute to a better understanding of the reactivation behavior of landslides along loess tablelands, provide a scientific foundation for landslide hazard and risk management, and supplement understanding of the geomorphological evolution of loess tableland landscapes. The widespread occurrence of microplastics in aquatic ecosystems that resulted in environmental contamination has attracted worldwide attention. Microplastics pose a potential threat to the growth and health of aquatic organisms, thereby affecting the function of the ecosystems. As one of the top ten countries producing and consuming plastic products globally, China's aquatic ecosystems have been profoundly affected by microplastics. In this review, we have summarized the microplastics contamination in three typical water environments (marine environment, freshwater environment, and wastewater treatment plants) in China, elaborated on the adverse impacts of microplastics on the ecological environment, and evaluated the potential ecological risks exposed to the ecosystem. In addition, the progress of microplastics extraction methods, as the important basis of microplastics related research, in aquatic ecosystems was introduced, especially the difference between the extraction of microplastics from wastewater and sludge samples. At present, most of the research on microplastics focuses on "one point", such as a certain river or wastewater treatment plant. Research on the mitigation and transfer of microplastics among different connected water environments is still lacking. Also, the microscale ecotoxicity caused by microplastics is poorly understood. In the end, we proposed suggestions and perspectives for future research regarding microplastics in the aquatic ecosystems in China. Biological lability of dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a crucial indicator of carbon cycle and contaminant attenuation in freshwater lakes. In this study, we employed a multi-stage plug-flow bioreactor and spectrofluorometric indices to characterize the seasonal variations in DOM composition and lability across Poyang Lake (PY) and Lake Taihu (TH), two large freshwater lakes in China with distinct hydrological seasonality. Our findings showed that the export of floodplain-derived organics and river-lake interaction led to a remarkable increase in terrestrial aromatic and humic-like DOM with high molecular weights and long turnover times in PY. Consequently, the labile fraction was extremely low (average LDOC% of 3%) during the rising-to-flood season (spring and summer). Conversely, autochthonous production in TH considerably enriched semi-labile (average SDOC% of 26%) and biodegradable DOM (average BDOC% of 34%) during the phytoplankton bloom to post-bloom season (summer and autumn). This was reflected by the accumulation of low-light-absorbing and protein-like components with high biological and fluorescence indices. In the dry and non-bloom season (winter), the better preservation of humic substances maintained the high molecular weight and humic degree of DOM in PY, while the decay of aquatic plants strengthened autochthonous production, resulting in a similar BDOC% of PY samples (23%–34%) to TH samples (18%–33%). We further applied partial least squares regression using DOM optical indices as predictive proxies, which generated a greater prediction strength for BDOC% (R 2 = 0.80) compared to SDOC% (R 2 = 0.57) and LDOC% (R 2 = 0.28). The regression model identified aromaticity (SUVA 254) as the most effective and negative predictor and low molecular weight (A 250 / A 365) as the highly and positively influential factor. Our study provides new evidence that the seasonality of DOM lability profiles is regulated by the trade-off between flow-related variation and phytoplankton production, and presents an approach to describe and predict DOM lability across freshwater lakes. • An integrated process was proposed to treat highly concentrated toilet wastewater. • The integrated process significantly improved the COD and nitrogen removal compared with AAO. • EC can ensure that the effluent quality meets the mandated requirements. • The economic analysis confirmed that the integrated process was feasible. Low-flush toilets have received increasing attention in relation to the water crisis in water-scarce regions because the vacuum flushing system (VFS) can reduce the amount of water required for flushing by approximately 80%. However, low-flush toilet wastewater exhibits the characteristics of high pollutant concentrations and cannot be directly discharged into urban pipe networks; therefore, decentralized wastewater treatment is necessary. Traditional control process (mainly consisting of hydrolysis acidification tank (HAT), anaerobic-anoxic–oxic (AAO) tank, coagulation sedimentation filtration tank and UV disinfection) was unsatisfactory for treating this type of wastewater. Therefore, a newly designed integrated biological-electrocatalytic (AAIE) process (mainly consisting of anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR), alternating internal circulation activated sludge process (AICS), and electrocatalytic oxidation (EC)) was introduced. ABR achieved large amounts of organic matter removal, the organic biodegradation kinetics revealed that the maximum specific degradation rate of the ABR was 0.050 to 0.082 d−1; AICS further removed COD and nitrogen, the denitrification rate and growth rate of nitrifying bacteria in the AICS were in the range of 0.079–0.121 kg/(kg·d) and 0.32–1.54 d−1, respectively. The temperature and organic loading rate were identified as two key parameters for ABR and AICS to remove pollutants, therefore, EC was the guarantee to make the effluent quality met the directly discharge standard of China (GB 18918-2002), especially in winter. The results showed that the AAIE process presented COD, colority, ammonia and total nitrogen removal rates of 98.5 ± 0.7%, 98.8 ± 0.6%, 97.0 ± 0.4% and 93.4 ± 2.6%, respectively, which were considerably higher than those of the control process. Furthermore, the economic analysis indicated that the AAIE process was feasible and may help to pave the way for wide application of biological-electrocatalytic processes for highly concentrated toilet wastewater treatment. The coupling between constructed wetlands and reservoir (CWs-R) afforded a novel ecosystem to improve the water quality and increase the emergency storage capacity of micro-polluted river drinking water source. In this study, spectroscopic characteristics of DOM in YL CWs-R ecosystem were first systematic studied based on a three-year field monitoring to investigate the chemical composition, sources and track the involved biogeochemical processes in the ecosystem. Three humic-like components (C1, C2, and C4, em >380 nm) and one protein-like component (C3, em < 380 nm) were identified by PARAFAC model. Significant spatiotemporal variations in concentration and composition of FDOM were observed in YL CWs-R ecosystem. The improved water transparency (SD) and, the increased hydraulic retention time (HRT) along YL CWs-R ecosystem enhance photochemical processes, leading to significant decreases in the intensities of humic-like components in effluent (P < 0.05) with lower degrees of aromaticity, molecular weights, and humification (decrease in HIX and increases in S R and BIX). In contrast, no significant spatial difference was observed for protein-like component (P > 0.05), which implies that the biodegradation and production of protein-like component may balance each other in the CWs-R ecosystem. The ecological pond unit plays a major role in the removal and transformation of DOM, especially in summer, while wetland purification unit contributes little to DOM reduction. In addition, the decay of aquatic macrophytes in wetland purification unit and the risk of algal bloom in the ecological pond unit might become important autochthonous sources of DOM, especially in summer and autumn. The intense pollution of urban river sediments with rapid urbanization has attracted considerable attention. Complex contaminated sediments urgently need to be remediated to conserve the ecological functions of impacted rivers. This study investigated the effect of using methanol as a co-substrate on the stimulation of the indigenous microbial consortium to enhance the bioremediation of petroleum hydrocarbons (PHs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in an urban river sediment. After 65 days of treatment, the PAHs degradation efficiencies in the sediment adding methanol were 4.87%-40.3% higher than the control. The removal rate constant of C31 was 0.0749 d -1 with 100 mM of supplied methanol, while the corresponding rate was 0.0399 d -1 in the control. Four-ring PAHs were effectively removed at a degradation efficiency of 65%-69.8%, increased by 43.3% compared with the control. Sulfate reduction and methanogenesis activity were detected, and methane-producing archaea (such as Methanomethylovorans, with a relative abundance of 25.87%-58.53%) and the sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB, such as Desulfobulbus and Desulfobacca) were enriched. In addition, the chemolithoautotrophic sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB, such as Sulfuricurvum, with a relative abundance of 34%-39.2%) were predominant after the depletion of total organic carbon (TOC), and markedly positively correlated with the PHs and PAHs degradation efficiencies (P < 0.01). The SRB and SOB populations participated in the sulfur cycle, which was associated with PHs and PAHs degradation. Other potential functional bacteria (such as Dechloromonas) were also obviously enriched and significantly positively correlated with the TOC concentration after methanol injection (P < 0.001). Anaerobic ammonium-oxidizing (anammox) process has recently been recognized as an important pathway for removing fixed nitrogen (N) from aquatic ecosystems. Anammox organisms are widely distributed in freshwater environments. However, little is known about their presence in the water column of riverine ecosystems. Here, the existence of a diverse anammox community was revealed in the water column of the Dongjiang River by analyzing 16S rRNA and hydrazine oxidation (hzo) genes of anammox bacteria. Phylogenetic analyses of hzo genes showed that Candidatus Jettenia related clades of anammox bacteria were dominant in the river, suggesting the ecological microniche distinction from freshwater/estuary and marine anammox bacteria with Ca. Brocadia and Kuenenia genera mainly detected in freshwater/estuary ecosystems, and Ca. Scalindua genus mainly detected in marine ecosystems. The abundance and diversity of anammox bacteria along the river were both significantly correlated with concentrations of NH4(+)-N based on Pearson and partial correlation analyses. Redundancy analyses showed the contents of NH4(+)-N, NO3(-)-N and the ratio of NH4(+)-N to NO2(-)-N significantly influenced the spatial distributions of anammox bacteria in the water column of the Dongjiang River. Ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) and bacteria (AOB) are widely distributed in the natural environment and play crucial roles in the nitrification process and the removal of nitrogen (N). Although planktonic microbial community plays an important role in river biogeochemical cycles, few studies have attempted to address the characteristics of AOA and AOB in the water column of river ecosystems. This study examined the community structures, distributions and abundance of planktonic AOA and AOB in the Dongjiang River and their responses to the changes in environmental parameters through quantitative polymerase chain reaction, cloning, and sequencing of ammonia mono-oxygenase (amoA). The abundance ratio of AOB to AOA varied from 0.07 to 9.4 along the river and was positively correlated with the concentration of ammonium. Significantly positive correlations were observed between the abundance of AOB and potential nitrification rates, which suggested that the contribution of AOB to nitrification was greater than that of AOA in the river. Phylogenetic analyses showed that AOA communities could be divided into three branches of Thaumarchaeota: Group 1.1a, Group 1.1a associated and Group 1.1b, with most sequences belonging to Group 1.1a. All AOB sequences fell within Nitrosomonas and Nitrosospira species, and the majority of sequences were affiliated with the latter. Multivariate statistical analyses indicated that the community distributions of AOA and AOB were significantly correlated with the concentrations of nitrate and total suspended solids, respectively. Hydrogen gas production from cellulose was investigated using an integrated hydrogen production process consisting of a dark fermentation reactor and microbial fuel cells (MFCs) as power sources for a microbial electrolysis cell (MEC). Two MFCs (each 25 mL) connected in series to an MEC (72 mL) produced a maximum of 0.43 V using fermentation effluent as a feed, achieving a hydrogen production rate from the MEC of 0.48 m(3) H(2)/m(3)/d (based on the MEC volume), and a yield of 33.2 mmol H(2)/g COD removed in the MEC. The overall hydrogen production for the integrated system (fermentation, MFC and MEC) was increased by 41% compared with fermentation alone to 14.3 mmol H(2)/g cellulose, with a total hydrogen production rate of 0.24 m(3) H(2)/m(3)/d and an overall energy recovery efficiency of 23% (based on cellulose removed) without the need for any external electrical energy input., (Copyright © 2010 Elsevier Ltd.
