The Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Palliative Care (FACIT-Pal) has been widely used in assessing the quality of life (QOL) of patients with life-limiting illness. However, the Chinese version of the FACIT-Pal has not been psychometrically validated yet. The purpose of this study was to psychometrically validate the FACIT-Pal in Chinese patients with advanced cancer. 160 patients with advanced cancer in mainland China participated in this cross-sectional study. The scalability of the instrument was determined by the item-total correlations and the reliability was tested by examining the Cronbach's alpha coefficients. The construct and concurrent validity of the FACIT-Pal were also examined. The item-total correlation coefficients ranged from 0.25 to 0.72 (P <.01). Cronbach's alpha coefficient of the Chinese version of the FACIT-Pal was 0.94, ranging from 0.78 to 0.89 for subscales. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) results provided support for the measurement structure of the 26-item Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General (FACT-G). Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) of the 19-item palliative care subscale identified five factors accounting for 62.21% of the total variance. Total/subscale scores of the FACIT-Pal were positively correlated with that of the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Spiritual Well-Being 12 Item Scale (FACIT-Sp-12) (r = 0.338–0.811, P <.01), as well as with the Karnofsky Performance Scale (KPS) scores (r = 0.163–0.273, P <.05), except for the correlation between social/family well-being subscale score and KPS score. Objectives: Evidence of the association between fine particulate (PM25, particles ≤2.5 µm in aerodynamic diameter) air pollution and fatal hemorrhagic stroke incidence is limited. This study aims to document the relationship between PM2.5 exposure and fatal hemorrhagic stroke incidence. Methods: The time-stratified case-crossover approach was applied for the analysis. Results: The mean concentration of PM2.5 is 75.33 µg/m³. Fatal hemorrhagic stroke incidence was significantly associated with PM2.5 exposure. Exposure to PM2.5 led to a 5% (2%-9%) and 5% (1%-10%) increase in fatal hemorrhagic stroke incidence in lag2 and lag03 respectively. An increased risk was observed especially in men and subjects with hypertension. Conclusions: This study provides evidence for the association between PM2.5 exposure and fatal hemorrhagic stroke incidence. Men and subjects with hypertension have increased risks, overweight may further increase their susceptibility to PM2.5 exposure related hemorrhagic stroke. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Arsenic is frequently found in poultry waste, most of which is transformed from feed additive organoarsenicals, resulting in arsenic pollution of soils and water around poultry farms. The North China Plain, an important area for livestock breeding of China, was chosen to investigate the pollution characteristics and assess the health risk of arsenic around chicken farms. Among the 138 chicken farms sampled, almost no roxarsone, a common organoarsenical, was detected in chicken feeds, manure, and surface soils, while the detectable rate of other arsenic species was high. Because of long-term enrichment, the concentrations of arsenic species in manure were generally higher than that in feed. As(III) was the main inorganic arsenic species in the manure, where is reducing environment. In surface soils beneath the accumulated manure, As(V) was the predominant arsenic species with 100% detectable rate. The detectable rate and average concentrations at 0 cm were generally higher than those at 25 cm depth, indicating that arsenic accumulated in the surface soils. In addition, a typical conceptual diagram of arsenic was developed to clarify the pollution process from feed to soil. Through health risk assessment of inorganic arsenic, the carcinogenic risk (CR) and non-carcinogenic risk (non-CR) were both negligible. The city of Jiaozuo had the highest CR and non-CR, which was 11 times higher than that of the city with the lowest risks. Emerging evidence demonstrates the clinical utility of genomic applications in newborn intensive care unit (NICU) patients with strong indications of Mendelian etiology. However, such applications' diagnostic yield and utility remain unclear for NICU cohorts with minimal phenotype selection. In this study, focused medical exome sequencing was used as a first‐tier, singleton‐focused diagnostic tool for 2303 unrelated sick neonates. Integrated analysis of single nucleotide variants (SNVs), small insertions and deletions (Indels), and large copy number variants (CNVs) was performed. The diagnostic rate in this NICU cohort is 12.3% (284/2303), with 190 probands with molecular diagnoses made from SNV/Indel analyses (66.9%), 93 patients with diagnostic aneuploidy/CNVs findings (32.8%), and 1 patient with both SNV and CNV (0.4%). In addition, 54 (2.3%) of patients had a reportable incidental finding. Multiple organ involvements, craniofacial abnormalities, and dermatologic abnormalities were the strongest positive predictors for a molecular diagnosis. Among the 190 cases with SNV/Indel defects, direct impacts on medical management were observed in 46.8% of patients after the results were reported. In this study, we demonstrate that focused medical exome sequencing is a powerful first‐line diagnostic tool for NICU patients. Hybridization is recognized as a major force in species evolution and biodiversity formation, generally leading to the origin and differentiation of new species. Multiple hybridization events cannot easily be reconstructed, yet they offer the potential to study a number of evolutionary processes. Here, we used nuclear expressed sequence tag-simple sequence repeat and large-scale single nucleotide polymorphism variation data, combined with niche analysis, to investigate the putative independent hybridization events in Notopterygium , a group of perennial herb plants endemic to China. Population genomic analysis indicated that the four studied species are genetically well-delimited and that N. forrestii and N. oviforme have originated by hybridization. According to Approximate Bayesian Computation, the best-fit model involved the formation of N. forrestii from the crossing of N. franchetii and N. incisum , with N. forrestii further backcrossing to N. franchetii to form N. oviforme. The niche analyses indicated that niche divergence [likely triggered by the regional climate changes, particularly the intensification of East Asian winter monsoon, and tectonic movements (affecting both Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and Qinling Mountains)] may have promoted and maintained the reproductive isolation among hybrid species. N. forrestii shows ecological specialization with respect to their parental species, whereas N. oviforme has completely shifted its niche. These results suggested that the climate and environmental factors together triggered the two-step hybridization of the East Asia herb plants. Objective: To estimate the risk of adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes in women with different pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI).Methods: We conducted a cohort study with 14 451 singleton pregnancies in 15 medical centers in Beijing between 20 June 2013 and 30 November 2013 using cluster random sampling. We divided participants into four groups based on pre-pregnancy BMI: Group A (underweight): BMI < 18.5 kg/m(2), Group B (normal): 18.5-23.9 kg/m(2), Group C (overweight): 24-27.9 kg/m(2), Group D (obesity): ≥28 kg/m(2). We used multivariate analysis to evaluate the association of the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes and pre-pregnancy BMI.Results: The prevalence of maternal overweight and obesity was 14.82% (2142/14 451) and 4.71% (680/14 451) in the study population, respectively. Higher pre-pregnancy BMI is associated with higher prevalence of gestational diabetes (GDM), macrosomia, Cesarean section (C-section), preeclampsia and postpartum hemorrhage. Pre-pregnancy overweight or obesity increases the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes, regardless of GDM status.Conclusions: Pre-pregnancy overweight or obesity is associated with increased risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. Objectives In this study, we studied the N and H genes from wild type measles viruses (MeVs) isolated during the 2013-2014 outbreak. Methods Clinical samples were collected, and the genotyping, phylogenetic analysis were performed. Results The vaccination rate of the study population was 4%. Genotype H1a was the predominant genotype. Wild type viruses were classified into clusters A and B, C and may have different origins. N-450 sequences from wild type viruses were highly homologous with, and likely evolved from MeVs circulating in Tianjing and Henan in 2012. MVs/Shenyang.CHN/18.14/3 could have evolved from MeVs from Liaoning, Beijing, Hebei, Heilongjiang, Henan, Jilin, and Tianjin. Our data suggested that one or more of the same viruses circulated between Beijing, Shenyang, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Berlin. Conclusions Important factors contributing to outbreaks could include weak vaccination coverage, poor vaccination strategies, and migration of adult workers between cities, countries, and from rural areas to urban areas. Angelicae Pubescentis Radix (APR) is a typical Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and has been widely used to treat rheumatism and headache diseases in China. This research aimed to illustrate the metabolites of APR in vivo to lay a foundation for the clinics application. A UPLC-Q-TOF-MS method combined with metabonomics approaches is used to address this objective. The separation was achieved on an Agilent SB-C18 column (1.8 μm, 2.1 × 50 mm) with a gradient elution system (ACN and 0.1 % formic acid-water). An electrospray ionization (ESI) was used for mass spectrometer and operated in a full-scan mode at m/z 100 – 800. The data were collected in the positive ion mode and analyzed by the Masslynx 4.1 and SIMCA 13.0 software. Furthermore, an orthogonal partial least-squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) using SIMCA 13.0 software was applied to investigate the differences between the blank and drug groups in bio-samples of rats (plasma, urine, feces). Totally 213 compounds including 41 prototype ingredients, 107 phase I and 65 phase II metabolites were detected, according to the MS and MS/MS data.
