Purpose: The number of international students in China has been increasing over the recent decades. The rapid expansion of the international student population aroused concerns over the capacity of Chinese universities to fulfill international students' expectations toward academic development. Perceiving student learning experiences as an important indicator of higher education quality, this article focuses on undergraduate international students in China and discusses their learning experiences from three perspectives, i.e., perceived learning environment, academic engagement, and student development. Design/Approach/Methods: Data were generated by a survey involving 1,428 international students studying for an undergraduate degree at 34 universities in China. Descriptive statistics were calculated, and the structural equation model was applied. Findings: The research showed the respondents' academic development in a range of skills and abilities, while their learning experiences at the Chinese higher education institutions (HEIs) were largely unsatisfactory. Specifically, the research revealed the respondents' moderate-to-low-level evaluation of perceived classroom learning environment, their low level of academic engagement, and the significant negative influences of the perceived classroom learning environment and academic engagement on their academic development. Originality/Value: The analysis holds implications for the enhancement of positive learning experiences of international undergraduate students in China and the improvement of the quality of Chinese international student education. The research investigated the influences of international students' perceived online learning environments, self-efficacy, and online interaction on their online learning achievement, as measured by these students' self-reported development of generic skills, research capacities, and Chinese proficiency and global abilities. Data were generated by a nationwide survey involving 1,010 international students across disciplines at 41 universities in China. The SEM analysis showed that among all factors directly and positively supporting international students' learning achievement, the two online environmental factors, i.e. accessibility to online learning resources and opportunities for knowledge acquisition, presented the strongest effects. The mediation analysis showed that through interaction, environmental interactivity had significant and positive indirect influences on learning achievement; and through self-efficacy, knowledge acquisition had significant and positive indirect influences on learning achievement. The SEM analysis also revealed a significant negative influence of environmental flexibility on international students' generic skill development. Possible explanations for the results were proposed. Anaplasma and Ehrlichia are tick-borne bacterial pathogens that cause anaplasmoses and ehrlichioses in humans and animals. In this study, we examined the prevalence of Anaplasma and Ehrlichia species in ticks and domesticated animals in Suizhou County, Hubei Province in the central China. We used PCR amplification and DNA sequencing of the 16S rRNA, groEL, and gltA genes to analyze. We collected 1900 ticks, including 1981 Haemaphysalis longicornis and 9 Rhipicephalus microplus, 159 blood samples of goats (n = 152), cattle (n = 4), and dogs (n = 3) from May to August of 2023. PCR products demonstrated that Anaplasma bovis, Anaplasma capra, and an Ehrlichia species were detected in the H. longicornis with the minimum infection rates (MIR) of 1.11%, 1.32%, and 0.05%, respectively; A. bovis, A. capra, and unnamed Anaplasma sp. were detected in goats with an infection rate of 26.31%, 1.31% and 1.97%, respectively. Anaplasma and Ehrlichia species were not detected from cattle, dogs and R. microplus ticks. The genetic differences in the groEL gene sequences of the Anaplasma in the current study were large, whereas the 16S rRNA and gltA gene sequences were less disparate. This study shows that ticks and goats in Suizhou County, Hubei Province carry multiple Anaplasma species and an Ehrlichia species, with relatively higher infection rate of A. bovis in goats. Powdery mildew is a fungal disease devastating to crops, causing significant quality and yield loss. As one of the most important fruits in the world, melon also is damaged by powdery mildew. The present study investigated the effect of powdery mildew on the photosynthetic parameters and leaf microstructure of melons, the ultrastructure of the leaf surface, photosynthetic index, chlorophyll content, yield, and quality index of five thick-skinned and differently shaped melon varieties. The net photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, leaf water use efficiency, and chlorophyll levels were significantly (p < 0.05) higher in Kangbing F3800 plants compared to the other four varieties. In the case of powdery mildew infection, the total number of stomata in the upper and lower epidermis was particularly high in the Zhongtian No. 8 and Zhongtianxueqiong varieties, respectively. The stomatal length and width were highest in the upper epidermis of Zhongtian No. 12 leaves and in the lower epidermis of Zhongtian No. 8 leaves compared to the other varieties. The total yield and meat thickness were significantly (p < 0.05) higher in the Zhongtianxueqiong variety than the others, along with the low edge sugar content. Overall, powdery mildew impacted differently the photosynthetic and leaf surface characteristics of the five melon varieties. Kangbing F3800 emerged as the most resistant variety, making it the preferred choice for introducing and promoting thick-skinned melon varieties in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region of China. Species of the genus Thelephora (Thelephorales, Thelephoraceae) are ectomycorrhizal symbionts of coniferous and broad-leaved plants, and some of them are well-known edible mushrooms, making it an exceptionally important group ecologically and economically. However, the diversity of the species from China has not been fully elucidated. In this study, we conducted a phylogenetic analysis based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions, using Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian analyses, along with morphological observations of this genus. Four new species from China are proposed, viz., T. dactyliophora, T. lacunosa, T. petaloides, and T. pinnatifida. In addition, T. sikkimensis originally described from India is reported for the first time from China. Thelephora dactyliophora, T. pinnatifida, and T. sikkimensis are distributed in subtropical forests and mainly associated with plants of the families Fagaceae and Pinaceae. Thelephora lacunosa and T. petaloides are distributed in tropical to subtropical forests. Thelephora lacunosa is mainly associated with plants of the families Fagaceae and Pinaceae, while T. petaloides is mainly associated with plants of the family Fagaceae. This study explores the challenges faced by young lecturers in managerial transformation in elite Chinese academic institutions which aim to develop into world-class universities. Drawing on data from in-depth interviews, the paper discusses how a group of lecturers on tenure-track contracts at a research university in China perceived the impacts of this managerial personnel reform. The study revealed intensified academic pressure and consequent feelings of insecurity, uncertainty and anxiety among the participants. Rigid tenure requirements pushed down research quality, and detracted from the efforts the participants could have devoted to teaching. Further negative impacts were strengthened power hierarchies and increasingly gendered nature of the academic culture.

Background Anaemia in pregnancy is one of the most frequent complications related to pregnancy and is a public health concern. This article examines the prevalence of anaemia in the third trimester of pregnancy and the associations between anaemia and adverse perinatal outcomes in Hebei Province, China. Methods We used SPSS software to describe the incidence of anaemia in the third trimester of pregnancy in Hebei Province and analysed the clinical characteristics in anaemic patients and the relationship between anaemia and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Results The overall prevalence of anaemia in the third trimester of pregnancy was 35.0% in Hebei Province. The prevalence of anaemia in the population with a high education level was lower than that in the population with a low education level. The incidence rate in rural areas was higher than that in urban areas. After adjustment for confounding factors, anaemia in the third trimester of pregnancy is an independent risk factor in terms of placenta previa, placental abruption, uterine atony, pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes mellitus, heart disease, postpartum haemorrhage, premature birth, laceration of birth canal, puerperal infection, caesarean section and large for gestational age. Conclusions The prevalence of anaemia in the third trimester of pregnancy is associated with an increased risk of adverse perinatal outcomes. The number of international students in China is increasing rapidly, but their experiences in China remain largely unknown. This article reports an intensive longitudinal multiple case study that explores eight American students' intercultural experiences and the impacts of such experiences on individual identity during their study in a Chinese university in 2010. Data come from monthly interviews and diaries that the students kept. Findings support Kim's depiction of the processes by which intercultural identity emerges, notably the "stress-adaptation-growth" cycle and the concurrent processes of "acculturation" and "deculturation". These findings reveal the journey of participants from cultural naivety to an emergent intercultural awareness and cultural critical capacity. Despite considerable ignorance and misunderstanding about China as an exotic "other" at the beginning of the program, all participants underwent some degree of cultural identity shift toward the more "open-ended . . . self-other orientation" of Kim's "intercultural identity."

The Hangzhou International Molecular Imaging Conference (HIMIC) is an annual conference held in China that focuses on the field of molecular imaging. The conference aims to promote cross-disciplinary education and research, strengthen international collaborations, and develop novel technologies for translational research and clinical practice. HIMIC has attracted top scientists from around the world and serves as an important platform for connecting China with the global community in the field of molecular imaging. The 16th HIMIC, held in 2023, featured keynote lectures on topics such as aptamers in cancer imaging, artificial intelligence in nuclear medicine, and radionuclide diagnostics and therapeutics. The conference also included invited lectures and panel discussions on attracting young talent to nuclear medicine and verifying AI systems. Insufficient attention has been given to the role of cultural differences in feedback communication with the UK's increasingly internationalised student body. This issue is particularly significant for international students taking short -- one-year -- postgraduate taught courses and we illustrate this in a study of Chinese students at a UK university. We draw on Holliday's notion of "small cultures" and Berry's model of cultural adaptation to analyse how they perceive, react to and gradually adapt to the provision of formative feedback as a key aspect of the new academic culture. Our data reveal that such feedback presents the students with cognitive challenges and psychological and emotional struggles, especially in the early months of their courses. Avoiding culturally essentialist explanations for this, we focus on differences in the "small cultures" of academia in China and the UK. Feedback is not only a part of the new academic culture itself, but can act as a bridge between norms, rules and practices of the two cultures. This bridge is often poorly constructed. Tutors need to be more aware of the nature and sources of stress that such students face and to which feedback may often be adding rather than contributing to enhanced learning. The underlying mechanisms of the development of unhealthy metabolic phenotypes in obese children and adolescents remain unclear. We aimed to screen the metabolomes of individuals with the unhealthy obesity phenotype and identify the potential metabolic pathways that could regulate various metabolic profiles of obesity in Chinese adolescents. A total of 127 adolescents aged 11–18 years old from China were investigated using a cross-sectional study. The participants were classified as having metabolically healthy obesity (MHO) or metabolically unhealthy obesity (MUO) based on the presence/absence of metabolic abnormalities defined by metabolic syndrome (MetS) and body mass index (BMI). Serum-based metabolomic profiling using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) was undertaken on 67 MHO and 60 MUO individuals. ROC analyses showed that palmitic acid, stearic acid, and phosphate could predict MUO, and that glycolic acid, alanine, 3-hydroxypropionic acid, and 2-hydroxypentanoic acid could predict MHO (all p < 0.05) from selected samples. Five metabolites predicted MUO, 12 metabolites predicted MHO in boys, and only two metabolites predicted MUO in girls. Moreover, several metabolic pathways may be relevant in distinguishing the MHO and MUO groups, including the fatty acid biosynthesis, fatty acid elongation in mitochondria, propanoate metabolism, glyoxylate and dicarboxylate metabolism, and fatty acid metabolism pathways. Similar results were observed for boys except for phenylalanine, tyrosine and tryptophan biosynthesis, which had a high impact [0.098]. The identified metabolites and pathways could be efficacious for investigating the underlying mechanisms of the development of different metabolic phenotypes in obese Chinese adolescents. Background: Increasing evidence has suggested an association of adiponectin gene polymorphisms rs1501299, rs2241766, rs266729 and rs3774261 with risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). This correlation has been extensively meta-analyzed for the first two polymorphisms, but not the second two. Methods: The PubMed, EMBASE, Google Scholar, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure databases were searched for relevant literature. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. Results: A total of 10 case-control studies on rs266729 (2,619 cases and 1,962 controls) and 3 case-control studies on rs3774261 (562 cases and 793 controls) were included. Meta-analysis showed that rs266729 was associated with significantly higher NAFLD risk based on the following five models: allelic, OR 1.72, 95% CI 1.34-2.21, P < 0.001; recessive, OR 2.35, 95% CI 1.86-2.95, P < 0.001; dominant, OR 1.84, 95% CI 1.34-2.53, P < 0.001; homozygous, OR 2.69, 95% CI 1.84-3.92, P < 0.001; and heterozygous, OR 1.72, 95% CI 1.28-2.32, P < 0.001. This association between rs266729 and NAFLD risk remained significant for all five models among studies with Asian, Chinese and Caucasian samples. The rs2241766 polymorphism was associated with significantly higher NAFLD risk according to the recessive model (OR 1.87, 95% CI 1.15-3.04, P = 0.01). Conclusion: Polymorphisms rs266729 and rs3774261 in the adiponectin gene may be risk factors for NAFLD. Environmental context: Lvliang, one of the main cities on the Fenwei Plain, is a key atmospheric pollution prevention area in China. Identification of sources of aerosols is essential to improving environmental air quality in this region. The quantitative source apportionment of carbonaceous aerosols performed in this study provides a better understanding of their sources and implications for climate and air-quality management policies in the Fenwei plain. Rationale: Organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) are major components of fine particulate matter (PM2.5), and they are of concern due to their significant impacts on human health and climate. Methodology: PM2.5 samples were collected daily during four consecutive seasons from 2018 to 2019. This paper highlights the seasonal variations, sources and transport characteristics of carbonaceous aerosol in Lvliang, China. Results: The OC and EC concentrations exhibited strong seasonal variations, with the highest in winter, mainly due to high pollution caused by winter heating in northern cities, and secondary OC (SOC) contribution. The average OC/EC ratio (1.72) in Lvliang was lower than those in most regions in China, further indicating that this region was greatly affected by primary source emissions. The highest SOC/OC ratio in summer (25.3%) was due to the positive correlation between SOC and temperature. Through the positive matrix factorisation (PMF) model, four sources of carbonaceous aerosols were identified: vehicle emissions (31.26%), coal combustion (30.83%), biomass combustion (24.36%) and dust emissions (13.55%). Potential source contribution function (PSCF) results indicated that in addition to the impact of local emissions, coal emissions from Ningxia and Shaanxi, motor vehicle emissions and biomass from Inner Mongolia and Ningxia and dust from Shaanxi and Henan Provinces were the major contributors to pollution. Discussion: These data provide key information for formulating emission reduction policies and improving air quality on the Fenwei Plain and highlights the urgent need for inter-regional prevention and control measures for the cities in Lvliang. Aconitum carmichaelii is a high-value medicinal herb widely used across China, Japan, and other Asian countries. Aconitine-type diterpene alkaloids (DAs) are the characteristic compounds in Aconitum. Although six transcriptomes, based on short-read next generation sequencing technology, have been reported from the Aconitum species, the terpene synthase (TPS) corresponding to DAs biosynthesis remains unidentified. We apply a combination of Pacbio isoform sequencing and RNA sequencing to provide a comprehensive view of the A. carmichaelii transcriptome. Nineteen TPSs and five alternative splicing isoforms belonging to TPS-b, TPS-c, and TPS-e/f subfamilies were identified. In vitro enzyme reaction analysis functional identified two sesqui-TPSs and twelve diTPSs. Seven of the TPS-c subfamily genes reacted with GGPP to produce the intermediate ent -copalyl diphosphate. Five AcKSLs separately reacted with ent -CPP to produce ent -kaurene, ent -atiserene, and ent -13- epi -sandaracopimaradie: a new diterpene found in Aconitum. AcTPSs gene expression in conjunction DAs content analysis in different tissues validated that ent -CPP is the sole precursor to all DAs biosynthesis, with AcKSL1, AcKSL2s and AcKSL3-1 responsible for C 20 atisine and napelline type DAs biosynthesis, respectively. These data clarified the molecular basis for the C 20 -DAs biosynthetic pathway in A. carmichaelii and pave the way for further exploration of C 19 -DAs biosynthesis in the Aconitum species. This research adopted a typological approach to explore international students' academic engagement in China. Using data generated by a survey study involving 801 international undergraduate students at 34 full-time Chinese universities, this research developed an international student engagement typology, and examined important individual and learning environment factors associated with the engagement types presented in the typology. The international student engagement typology helps to understand and enhance international undergraduate students' learning experiences in Chinese HEIs. aimed to assess the prevalence and course of cognitive symptoms, and their associations with clinical and functional outcomes during 6 months of antidepressant treatment, in a real-world setting among Chinese patients with MDD. Patients and methods: Outpatients (n=598) aged 18–65 years with MDD and a total score ≥17 on the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale – 17 Items (HAM-D17) were observed over 6 months after initiating new antidepressant monotherapy, with follow-up visits at months 1, 2, and 6. Cognitive symptoms were assessed using the Perceived Deficits Questionnaire – Depression (PDQ-D) and cognitive performance using the Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST). Results: At baseline, 76.9% of patients had indications of cognitive symptoms (PDQ-D total score ≥21); at month 6, this was reduced, but still present in 32.4%. Across the 6-month study period, patients improved across cognitive, clinical and functional assessments. High levels of cognitive symptoms (PDQ-D) consistently predicted worse clinical outcomes, ie, lower odds for remission and increased odds for relapse, as well as worse patient-reported functional outcomes and lower quality of life. In contrast, cognitive performance (DSST) predicted performance-based functioning but only a few patient-reported functional outcomes (absenteeism and quality of life), and no clinical outcomes. PDQ-D and DSST scores were uncorrelated at baseline. Conclusion: The study highlights the importance of assessing and targeting cognitive symptoms for increasing patients' chances of recovery and restoring functioning in the treatment of MDD. Despite the rapid increase of international students in the Chinese higher education sector, little is known about their experiences in China. This paper reports a longitudinal study investigating experiences of a small group of international students during their undergraduate study in an English-medium medical course at a Chinese university. Data were generated through annual interviews, complemented by two rounds of questionnaire surveys respectively held at the beginning and end of the course. Drawing on self-determination theory, findings reveal the learning process through which the participants, responding to and interacting with new academic and social environments, gradually achieved adaptation and personal growth. Meanwhile, the research presents evidence of the students’ dissatisfaction, arising mainly from three aspects of their university environments: linguistic, pedagogical, and attitudinal. Introduction Little has been reported about the demographic and clinical features of major depressive disorder (MDD) with comorbid dysthymia in Chinese patients. This study examined the frequency of comorbid dysthymia in Chinese MDD patients together with the demographic and clinical correlates and prescribing patterns of psychotropic drugs. Methods Consecutively collected sample of 1178 patients with MDD were examined in 13 major psychiatric hospitals in China. Patients' demographic and clinical characteristics and psychotropic drugs prescriptions were recorded using a standardized protocol and data collection procedure. The diagnosis of dysthymia was established using the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview. Medications ascertained included antidepressants, antipsychotics, benzodiazepines, and mood stabilizers. Results One hundred and three (8.7%) patients fulfilled criteria for dysthymia. In multiple logistic regression analyses, compared to non-dysthymia counterparts, MDD patients with dysthymia had more depressive episodes with atypical features including increased appetite, sleep, and weight gain, more frequent lifetime depressive episodes, and less likelihood of family history of psychiatric disorders. There was no significant difference in the pattern of psychotropic prescription between the 2 groups. Conclusions There are important differences in the demographic and clinical features of comorbid dysthymia in Chinese MDD patients compared with previous reports. Objective This study examined the pattern of adjunctive antidepressant use in schizophrenia patients and its demographic and clinical correlates in a nationwide survey in China. Methods Fourteen thousand and thirteen patients in 45 Chinese psychiatric hospitals or centers were interviewed (4,486 in 2002, 5,288 in 2006, and 4,239 in 2012). Patients' sociodemographic and clinical characteristics were recorded using a standardized protocol and data collection procedure. Chi-square test, independent-samples t test, Mann-Whitney U test, and multiple logistic regression analysis were used in data analyses. Results Antidepressant use was found in 5.2% of the study population with 4.6% in 2002, 4.3% in 2006, and 6.9% in 2012, respectively. A significant increase in use from 2006 to 2012 was found ( p < .001). Multiple logistic regression analyses in the whole population revealed that patients receiving adjunctive antidepressants were more likely to be outpatients in tertiary referral centers (level-III hospitals) and who had an earlier age of onset, less severe global illness, but more depressive symptoms. They were less likely to receive first-generation antipsychotics but more likely to receive benzodiazepines (R2 = 0.255, p < .001). Conclusions Despite an increasing trend, the frequency of antidepressant use in schizophrenia in China was considerably lower than in Western countries. Objectives. This study is to assess the prognostic value of Tc99m-pertechnetate thyroid scintigraphy for predicting the outcomes of fixed low dose of radioiodine therapy (RIT) in a cohort of Chinese Graves’ disease (GD) patients. Materials and Methods. This is a retrospective study of GD patients who received RIT with a single dose of radioiodine (5 mCi). All the patients received Tc99m-pertechnetate thyroid scintigraphy prior to RIT. Thyroid mass, Tc99m-pertechnetate uptake, gender, age at diagnosis, duration of the disease, ophthalmopathy, and serum levels of FT4, FT3, TT4, and TT3 prior to RIT were analyzed as potential interference factors for outcomes of RIT. Results. One hundred and eighteen GD patients who completed RIT were followed up for 12 months. The outcomes (euthyroidism, hypothyroidism, and hyperthyroidism) were found to be significantly associated with thyroid mass and Tc99m-pertechnetate uptake. Patients with thyroid mass ≤ 40.1 g or Tc99m-pertechnetate uptake ≤ 15.2% had higher treatment success. Conclusions. A fixed low dose of 5 mCi radioiodine seems to be practical and effective for the treatment of Chinese GD patients with thyroid mass ≤ 40.1 g and Tc99m-pertechnetate uptake ≤ 15.2%. Background. After initial treatment of breast cancer (BC), monitoring locoregional recurrence and distant metastases is a great clinical challenge. Objective. To evaluate the efficacy of PET/CT in association with serum tumor makers in BC follow-up. Methods. Twenty-six women with a history of modified radical mastectomy were evaluated by 18F-FDG PET/CT. The results of PET/CT were compared with those of conventional imaging techniques (CITs) (including mammography, chest radiography, CT, MRI, ultrasound, and bone scintigraphy). Serum tumor markers of CEA, CA 125, and CA 15-3 in the BC patients were also analyzed in association with the results of PET/CT. Results. Compared with CITs, PET/CT was more sensitive to detect the malignant foci and had better patient-based sensitivity and specificity. The mean CA 15-3 serum level was significantly higher in the confirmed positive patients of PET/CT results than in the confirmed negative ones, while there were no significant differences in the serum levels of CEA and CA 125 of both groups. Conclusion. PET/CT is a highly efficient tool for BC follow-up compared with CITs. Purpose There have been no data about long-term benzodiazepine ( BZD) use and its correlates in patients with major depressive disorder ( MDD) in China. This study aimed to examine the prevalence of long-term BZD use (more than three months) and its demographic and clinical correlates in Chinese patients with MDD. Design and Methods A total of 1,192 patients with MDD were examined in 10 mental health centers in China. Patients' socio-demographic and clinical characteristics and prescriptions for psychotropic drugs were recorded using a standardized form. Findings A large portion of patients (36.2%) received long-term BZD treatment. Univariate analyses revealed that long-term BZD users were older, poorer, and had more impaired occupational functioning than patients not taking BZDs. Long-term BZD users had fewer psychotic symptoms and took less antipsychotic drugs. In multivariate analyses, long-term BZD use was independently associated with older age and more severe impaired occupational functioning; long-term BZD users were less likely to receive antipsychotic medications and traditional antidepressants (tricyclic antidepressants, tetracyclic antidepressant, and monoamine oxidase inhibitors). Practice Implications Long-term BZD use was common in patients with MDD in China. A host of demographic and clinical factors were independently associated with long-term BZD use. Introduction Little is known about the prescription patterns of adjunctive antidepressants in Asian schizophrenia patients. This study aimed to examine trends in the use of antidepressants and their demographic and clinical correlates in the treatment of schizophrenia in Asia between 2001 and 2009. Methods A total of 6,761 hospitalized schizophrenia patients in nine Asian countries and territories were examined: 2,399 in 2001, 2,136 in 2004 and 2,226 in 2009. Patients' socio-demographic and clinical characteristics and prescriptions of psychotropic drugs were recorded using a standardized protocol and data collection procedure. Results The proportion of antidepressant prescription was 6.8% in the whole sample; 5.3% in 2001, 6.5% in 2004 and 8.7% in 2009. There were wide inter-country variations at each survey ranging from 0.9% in Hong Kong to 15.3% in Singapore in 2001; from 1.9% in Korea to 15.4% in Singapore in 2004; and from 2.7% in Japan to 22.0% in Singapore in 2009. Multiple logistic regression analysis of the whole sample revealed that patients on antidepressants were younger, more likely to receive benzodiazepines and have significant extrapyramidal side-effects and less likely to have significant positive symptoms. Discussion Unlike findings in Western countries, adjunctive antidepressant prescription for schizophrenia was not common in Asia. The frequency of antidepressant prescription varied among countries and territories, suggesting that a host of clinical and socio-cultural factors played a role in determining antidepressant use in Asia. Objectives Bipolar disorder ( BD) is frequently misdiagnosed as major depressive disorder ( MDD), which may lead to inappropriate treatment and poor outcomes. This study aimed to compare demographic and clinical features between patients with MDD and those with BD, but being misdiagnosed as MDD, in China. Methods A total of 1487 patients diagnosed with MDD were consecutively evaluated in 13 psychiatric hospitals or psychiatric units of general hospitals nationwide in China. The patients' sociodemographic and clinical characteristics were recorded using a standardized protocol and data collection procedure. The Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview ( MINI) was used to establish DSM- IV diagnoses, and identify patients with MDD and those with BD, but being misdiagnosed with MDD. Results The proportions of BD (all types), bipolar I disorder ( BD-I), and bipolar II disorder ( BD- II) misdiagnosed as MDD in clinical practice were 20.8%, 7.9%, and 12.8%, respectively. Multiple logistic regression analyses revealed that compared to MDD patients, BD-I was characterized by more atypical depressive features (increased appetite, increased sleep, and weight gain) [odds ratio ( OR) = 2.0, 95% confidence interval ( CI): 1.2-3.2], more psychotic symptoms ( OR = 2.1, 95% CI: 1.3-3.5), more lifetime depressive episodes ( OR = 1.1, 95% CI: 1.1-1.2), and earlier age of onset ( OR = 0.97, 95% CI: 0.9-0.99); BD- II was characterized by more psychotic symptoms ( OR = 2.1, 95% CI: 1.4-3.1) and earlier age of onset ( OR = 0.96, 95% CI: 0.9-0.97). In addition, compared to BD- II patients, BD-I patients were characterized by more frequent depressive episodes per year ( OR = 3.1, 95% CI: 1.5-6.6). Conclusions Depressive episodes in the context of BD-I and BD- II, among those who were misclassified as MDD, present some different clinical features compared to MDD. Methods A total of 1487 patients originally diagnosed with MDD were consecutively screened for diagnostic revision in 13 psychiatric hospitals or psychiatric units of general hospitals in China nationwide. The patients' sociodemographic and clinical characteristics were recorded using a standardized protocol and data collection procedure. The Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) was used to establish DSM-IV diagnoses. Data on psychotropic prescriptions were collected by a review of medical records. Results Three hundred and nine of the 1487 patients (20.8%) fulfilled DSM-IV criteria for BD; 118 (7.9%) for BD-I and 191 (12.8%) for BD-II on the MINI. Of the BD patients ( n = 309), 227 (73.5%) received any use of antidepressants, 73 (23.6%) antipsychotics and 33 (10.7%) mood stabilizers. In multiple logistic regression analyses, compared with those with MDD, patients with BD-I were more likely to receive antidepressants (OR 1.7, 95% CI 1.1-2.8, p = 0.02), antipsychotics (OR 1.6, 95% CI 1.04-2.5, p = 0.04) and mood stabilizers (OR 3.9, 95% CI 2.1-7.2, p < 0.001), whereas patients with BD-II were more likely to receive mood stabilizers (OR 2.4, 95% CI 1.3-4.4, p = 0.003). There was no difference in the use of antidepressants (OR 1.1, 95% CI 0.8-1.5, p = 0.7) and antipsychotics (OR 1.3, 95% CI 0.9-1.9, p = 0.2) between BD-II and MDD. In addition, there was no difference between BD-I and BD-II in any use of antidepressants, antipsychotics and mood stabilizers. Conclusions The prescription of antidepressants for BD patients misdiagnosed with MDD is very common, and only a very small proportion of patients received guideline-concordant treatment. Considering the potentially hazardous effects of inappropriate pharmacotherapy in this population, continuing education and training addressing the correct diagnosis of BD and rational use of psychotropic medications are needed in China. Objective: Clozapine is one of the most commonly used antipsychotic drugs in China, To date, few studies have investigated the patterns the prescription of clozapine nationwide. The present study examined these patterns in China in 2006 and identified the demographic and clinical characteristics associated with the use of clozapine. Methods: Using a standardized protocol and data collection procedure, we surveyed 5,898 patients with schizophrenia in 10 provinces with differing levels of economic development. Results: Overall, clozapine had been prescribed for 31.9% (n=1,883) of the patients; however we found considerable variation among the 10 provinces. The frequency of clozapine use was highest in Sichuan (39.3%) and lowest in Beijing (17.3%). The mean daily dose of clozapine was 210.36±128.72 mg/day, and 25.1% of the patients were treated with clozapine in combination with other antipsychotics. Compared with the group not receiving clozapine, clozapine-user had been treated for longer durations and had experienced a greater number of relapses and hospitalizations. Furthermore, those in the clozapine-user had lower family incomes, were less able to seek psychiatric services, and more likely to be male and have a positive family history of schizophrenia. A multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that age, sex, professional help-seeking behaviors, duration of illness, economic status, educational level, and clinical manifestations were associated with the use of clozapine. Conclusion: Clozapine use is common in China. However, use of the antipsychotic varies among provinces, and demographic and clinical factors play important roles in the prescription of clozapine. Objective: Optimizing treatment and outcomes for people with schizophrenia requires understanding of how evidence-based treatments are utilized. Clozapine is the most effective antipsychotic drug for treatment-refractory schizophrenia, but few studies have investigated trends and patterns of its use over time internationally. This study examined the prescription patterns of clozapine and its demographic and clinical correlates in Asia from 2001 to 2009. Method: Clozapine prescriptions were collected in a sample of 6761 hospitalized schizophrenia patients in nine Asian countries and regions using a standardized protocol and data collection procedure. Results: Overall, the proportion of patients receiving clozapine prescriptions was stable across the three surveys from 2001 to 2009, ranging from 14.5% to 15.9%. However, the rates and patterns observed within different regions and countries at each survey differed considerably. Clozapine use decreased significantly over time in China, while it increased in Korea and Singapore. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that patients taking clozapine were significantly younger, had a higher dose of antipsychotic drugs in chlorpromazine equivalents, were more likely to be female, had fewer extrapyramidal symptoms, and had more negative symptoms, admissions and weight gain in the past month than those not receiving clozapine. Conclusion: The variability in overall rates and changes in prescription rates over time in these samples suggest that factors other than psychopharmacological principles play an important role in determining the use of clozapine in schizophrenia in Asia. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the sex differences in prescribing patterns of psychotropic drugs and drug-induced side effects in schizophrenia patients in Asia using the data of the Research on Asian Psychotropic Prescription Pattern (REAP) surveys. Method: The prescription patterns of 6,441 schizophrenia inpatients in six Asian countries and regions were investigated during the 2001--2009 period. The patients' socio-demographic and clinical characteristics and their prescriptions for psychotropic drugs were recorded using a standardized protocol and data collection procedure. Results: Univariate analyses found the following factors to be significantly associated with the male sex: a younger age, higher doses of antipsychotics, less prominent delusions and hallucinations, more prominent negative symptoms, less likelihood of a prescription for second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs), greater use of antipsychotic polypharmacy, mood stabilizers and depot antipsychotics, more frequent tardive dyskinesia (TD), and less weight gain. In multivariate analyses, fewer prescriptions for SGAs, greater use of mood stabilizers, anticholinergics, antipsychotic polypharmacy and depot antipsychotics, extrapyramidal side effects (EPS) and TD, and less weight gain were independently associated with the male sex. Conclusions: Sex is one of the independent contributors to psychotropic prescription and side effects in Asian schizophrenia patients. Abstract: Plant height (PH) reduction has obviously contributed to lodging resistance and yield increase of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) in the last decades. The objectives of this study were to understand the diversity status of wheat cultivars in northern China and to identify simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers associated with PH. Using 117 SSR markers evenly distributed on wheat chromosomes, a total of 1484 alleles were detected in 136 winter wheat cultivars that were historically planted in northern China. The average allele number per locus ranged from 2 to 42 with an average of 12.6. The polymorphism information content (PIC) values ranged from 0.016 to 0.941 with an average of 0.640. Based on the cluster tree, the cultivars developed by the same breeders or kin cultivars were gathered in the same subgroup. Some cultivars with similar ecotypes or developed contemporaneously also fell into the same subgroup. Nineteen SSRs each were significantly associated with PH under drought and well-watered conditions, respectively (P < 0.01), including 9 common markers, viz., Xbarc125 (7D), Xbarc168 (2D), Xgwm126 (5A), Xgwm130 (2B), Xgwm212 (5D), Xgwm285 (3B), Xgwm495 (4B), Xgwm95 (2A), and Xwmc396 (7B). Coking is a substantial source of carbonaceous aerosols in China, but the emission characteristics and pollution levels of coking-produced organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) remain unknown, causing considerable uncertainty in emission estimates. In this study, the emission factors of OC (EF OC) and EC (EF EC) of typical coking plants in Shanxi, China, were measured. The measured EF EC and EF OC from fugitive emissions (7.43 and 9.54 g/t) were significantly higher than those from flue gas (1.67 and 3.71 g/t). The technological conditions of coke production affect the emissions of OC and EC. For example, the total emissions from coke plants that use 3.2-m-high coke ovens were greater than those from plants that use 4.3- and 6-m-high ovens. The EF OC and EF EC for plants conducting stamp charging were considerably higher than those for plants using top charging. The stable carbon isotopes of total carbon (δ13C TC), OC (δ13C OC), and EC (δ13C EC) for fly ash during coking were −23.74‰ to −24.17‰, −23.32‰ to −23.87‰, and −23.84‰ to −24.14‰, respectively, and no clear isotopic fractionation was found during coke production. Different EC/OC ratios from different emission pathways and the carbon isotope signature of coke production should be considered when investigating the sources of carbonaceous aerosols. The total estimated EC and OC emissions from coke production in China were 3.93 and 5.72 Gg in 2017, and Shanxi, Hebei, and Shaanxi made the largest contributions. The mitochondrial genome sequence of Coelomactra antiquata (Mollusca: Bivalvia) in Zhangzhou (zz-mtDNA) was fully sequenced and compared with that in Rizhao (rz-mtDNA) in this study. A tRNA ( tRNA Met) located between tRNA Ala and cox1 genes was identified in zz-mtDNA but not in rz-mtDNA. The largest non-coding region (NCR; MNR) contained 11 copies 99nt tandem repeat sequences exclusively in rz-mtDNA, while the second largest NCR with 400 bp between tRNA Ala and tRNA Met in zz-mtDNA was absent in rz-mtDNA. Secondary structures of ZZ and RZ C. antiquata rRNAs are significantly different. The mitochondrial genomic characteristics clearly indicate that there are at least two subspecies in C. antiquata. The complete mitochondrial genome ofCoelomactra antiquata(Guangxi, in China, GX) was determined. It is 16 801 bp in length and is the first representative from this province. The mitochondrial genome encodes 35 genes, including 12 PCGs, two ribosomal RNA, and 21 transfer RNA genes.Atp8andtrnSer(UCN)genes are missing, compared with the typical gene content of animal mitochondrial genomes. Three (cob, nad1, nad4,andnad6) of the 12 PCGs in the mitochondrial genome initiate with the ATA, while other PCGs start with ATG. Two PCGs (atp6andnad4L) end with incomplete stop codons (T–), and the remaining ones have complete stop codons (TAA or TAG). The largest non-coding region of theC. antiquata(GX) contains one section of tandem repeats (5 × 99 bp). Among all PCGs and rRNAs, thenad5gene contains the maximum polymorphic sites (430), followed bynad4(261) andcox2(240). Two ribosomal RNA genes (srRNAandlrRNA) andcox1are most conservative. The proportions of polymorphic sites in six genes (nad4, nad2, nad6, nad5, cox2,andnad3) are more than 20% (ranging from 20.25% to 25.21%). Piroplasmosis is a serious debilitating and sometimes fatal disease. Phylogenetic relationships within piroplasmida are complex and remain unclear. We compared the intron–exon structure and DNA sequences of the RPS8 gene from Babesia and Theileria spp. isolates in China. Similar to 18S rDNA, the 40S ribosomal protein S8 gene, RPS8, including both coding and non-coding regions is a useful and novel genetic marker for defining species boundaries and for inferring phylogenies because it tends to have little intra-specific variation but considerable inter-specific difference. However, more samples are needed to verify the usefulness of the RPS8 (coding and non-coding regions) gene as a marker for the phylogenetic position and detection of most Babesia and Theileria species, particularly for some closely related species. Objective: To investigate the prevalence of psychotic depression and the differences in sociodemographic and clinical characteristics and prescription patterns of psychotropic medications between patients with psychotic depression (PD) and patients with nonpsychotic depression (NPD) in China.Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study in 13 major psychiatric hospitals or the psychiatric units of general hospitals in China from September 1, 2010, to February 28, 2011. PD was defined according to the psychotic disorder section of the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI). The sociodemographic and clinical characteristics and the prescription patterns of psychotropic medications were compared between the PD and NPD groups. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to investigate factors associated with an increased likelihood of PD.Results: Among 1172 MDD patients, the prevalence of psychotic features was 9.2% in the present study. The logistic regression analysis indicated that unmarried (OR = 2.08, p < 0.001), frequent depressive episodes (OR = 2.10, p = 0.020), depressive episodes with suicidal ideation and attempts (OR = 1.91, p = 0.004), and patients who were prescribed any antipsychotics (OR = 2.94, p < 0.001) were associated with psychotic features in patients with MDD.Limitations: Cross-sectional design, retrospective recall of some data CONCLUSION: The prevalence of PD is high in China, and there were some differences in demographic and clinical characteristics between patients with PD and patients with NPD. Background: Little is known about the demographic and clinical features of the atypical subtype of major depressive disorder (MDD) patients in China. This study set out to investigate the prevalence of atypical depression in MDD patients in China, and identify its demographic and clinical features.Methods: The study was conducted in 13 major psychiatric hospitals or in the psychiatric units of general hospitals in China, and recruited a sample of 1172 patients diagnosed with MDD. The patients' demographic and clinical features and prescriptions of psychotropic drugs were collected using a standardized questionnaire designed for the study.Results: The prevalence of atypical depression was 15.3%. In multiple logistic regression analyses, compared to the non-atypical depression patients, the atypical depression patients were more likely to have depressive episodes with suicide ideation and attempts (OR = 1.49, 95% CI = 1.06, 2.10, P = 0.023), depressive episodes with psychotic features (OR = 2.15, 95% CI = 1.43, 3.22, P < 0.001), seasonal depressive episodes (OR = 1.77, 95% CI = 1.12, 2.78, P = 0.014), an earlier age of onset (OR = 0.98, 95% CI = 0.96, 0.99, P = 0.001), and lifetime depressive episodes (OR = 1.07, 95% CI = 1.01, 1.13, P = 0.020).Limitations: The assessment of atypical features was not based on a validated rating scale.Conclusion: Our results indicate that atypical depression is common in Chinese patients with MDD. Background Little is known about the demographic and clinical differences between early- and late-onset depressions (EOD and LOD, respectively) in Chinese patients. This study examined the demographic and clinical profile of EOD (<=25 years) compared to LOD (>25 years) in China. Methods A consecutively recruited sample of 1178 patients with MDD was assessed in 13 psychiatric hospitals or psychiatric units of general hospitals in China nationwide. The cross-sectional data of patients׳ demographic and clinical characteristics and prescriptions of psychotropic drugs including antidepressants, mood stabilizers, antipsychotics and benzodiazepines were recorded using a standardized protocol and data collection procedure. Results Two hundred and seventy five (23.3%) of the 1178 patients fulfilled criteria for EOD. In multiple logistic regression analyses, compared to LOD patients their EOD counterparts were more likely to be unmarried and unemployed, had more atypical and psychotic depressive episodes, had bipolar features, while they had more lifetime depressive episodes. Conclusions The demographic and more severe clinical features of EOD in Chinese patients were basically consistent with those found in Western populations. Abstract: Aim: To investigate the results of the Hypomania Checklist-32 (HCL-32) administered as a screening instrument in clinical settings to mood disorders patients in the depressive phase. Methods: A total of 1487 patients diagnosed and being treated for major depressive disorder (MDD) in 13 mental health centers across China were self-rated by the HCL-32 and independently examined by the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI). Results: After examination by the MINI, 309 (20.8%) of the 1487 patients clinically diagnosed as having MDD satisfied DSM-IV criteria for bipolar disorder (BD): 118 (7.9%) for bipolar I disorder (BD-I) and 191 (12.8%) for bipolar II disorder (BD-II). The mean HCL-32 score of the BD patients was statistically higher than that of patients with unipolar depression (UD, major depressive disorder), BD-II higher than UD, while no significant difference between BD-I and BD-II. The HCL-32 distinguished between BD and UD (best cutoff score 14), between BD-II and UD (best cutoff 12). At the optimum cutoff of 12 between BD and UD, the sensitivity was 0.86, specificity 0.69. Limitations: No standardized instruments were used to measure the severity of depressive symptoms. Depressed patients with a previous history of BD were excluded from this study. Conclusions: The HCL-32 results in this multicenter study of patients in the depressive phase were similar to those of earlier, generally smaller-scale studies which subjects could be in any mood phases. A score of 12 could be used as the optimum cutoff between BD and UD to improve screening for BD-II if the HCL-32 was applied in clinical settings in China. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Results: Three hundred-nine of the 1487 patients (20.8%) satisfied DSM-IV criteria for BD; 118 (7.9%) for BD-I and 191 (12.8%) for BD-II on the MINI. The optimal cut-off point on the MDQ to differentiate BD from MDD was 3, while cut-off points of 5 and 3 differentiated BD-I and BD-II from MDD, respectively. The maximum sensitivity was 0.31, 0.45 and 0.22 for differentiating BD, BD-I and BD-II from MDD, respectively. Conclusions: The optimal cutoff points of the MDQ for screening BD in Chinese patients originally diagnosed as MDD were considerably lower than those in earlier studies. Abstract: Background: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a recurrent, complex illness and often misdiagnosed and treated as a major depressive disorder (MDD). This study set out (1) to investigate the proportion of BD in patients treated for MDD using DSM-IV diagnostic criteria; (2) to test the usefulness of the screening tool — the 32-item Hypomania Checklist (HCL-32) in Chinese patients; and (3) to assess whether MDD patients with subthreshold manic features (patients who screened positive for BD on the HCL-32, but did not meet the diagnostic criteria for DSM-IV BD as measured by Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI)) differ from those with BD, and from those suffering from MDD without manic features in terms of basic demographic and clinical variables. Methods: A total of 1487 patients treated for MDD were consecutively examined in 13 mental health centers in China. The patients'' socio-demographic and clinical characteristics were recorded using a standardized protocol and data collection procedure. The HCL-32 was self-completed by patients to identify hypomanic symptoms, and the MINI was used by clinicians to establish DSM-IV diagnoses. Results: The proportions of undiagnosed BD (all types), BD-I and BD-II were 20.8%, 7.9% and 12.8%, respectively. The HCL-32 had low positive predictive value (0.43). Compared to MDD patients without subthreshold manic features, MDD patients with subthreshold manic features were younger at onset, less likely to be married and had more depressive episodes on a seasonal basis, and more frequent depressive episodes overall. Compared to BD patients, MDD patients with subthreshold manic features had an older age at onset and less frequent depressive episodes and less family history of psychiatric disorders, appetite, weight gain and time spent sleeping, suicide ideation and attempts and psychotic symptoms. Conclusions: At least one fifth of Chinese patients treated for MDD may have an undiagnosed BD. The HCL-32 is useful to identify broader subthreshold bipolar features. The findings need to be confirmed by longitudinal studies using more comprehensive, standardized instruments. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Objective: To explore the relationship between the exposure level of particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5) and particulate matter 10 (PM10) in the air of pregnant women during preconception and first trimester of pregnancy and the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM)., Methods: The data of pregnant women delivered in 22 monitoring hospitals in Hebei Province from 2019 to 2021 were collected, and the daily air quality data of their cities were used to calculate the exposure levels of PM2.5 and PM10 in different pregnancy stages, and logistic regression model was used to analyze the impact of exposure levels of PM2.5 and PM10 on GDM during preconception and first trimester of pregnancy., Results: 108,429 singleton live deliveries were included in the study, of which 12,967 (12.0%) women had a GDM diagnosis. The prevalence of GDM increased over the course of the study from 10.2% (2019) to 14.9% (2021). From 2019 to 2021, the average exposure of PM2.5 and PM10 was relatively 56.67 and 103.08μg/m3 during the period of preconception and first trimester of pregnancy in Hebei Province. Handan, Shijiazhuang, and Xingtai regions had the most severe exposure to PM2.5 and PM10, while Zhangjiakou, Chengde, and Qinhuangdao had significantly lower exposure levels than other regions. The GDM group had statistically higher exposure concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 during the period of preconception, first trimester, preconception and first trimester (P<0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the risk of GDM increases by 4.5%, 6.0%, and 10.6% for every 10ug/m3 increase in the average exposure value of PM2.5 in preconception, first trimester, preconception and first trimester, and 1.7%, 2.1%, and 3.9% for PM10. Moreover, High exposure to PM2.5 in the first, second, and third months of preconception and first trimester is associated with the risk of GDM. And high exposure to PM10 in the first, second, and third months of first trimester and the first, and third months of preconception is associated with the risk of GDM., Conclusion: Exposure to high concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 during preconception and first trimester of pregnancy can significantly increase the risk of GDM. Background and Objective: Research on body composition phenotypes and bone health in adolescents is limited. Hence, this study aimed to analyze the relationship between different body composition phenotypes, bone mineral content, and bone metabolism markers in Chinese adolescents., Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 1852 adolescents aged 12 to 18 years were selected from six schools in Yinchuan City between 2017 and 2020 using stratified cluster random sampling. The participant's body composition and bone mineral content (BMC) were measured using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). Serum bone metabolic markers (OC, CTX, and Ca) were measured. Based on their FMI and LMI, individuals were categorized into four body composition phenotypes: low fat mass-low lean mass (LFMI-LLMI), low fat mass-high lean mass (LFMI-HLMI), high fat mass-high lean mass (HFMI-HLMI), high fat mass-low lean mass (HFMI-LLMI)., Results: There was a statistically significant difference between the four different body composition phenotypes with BMC, CTX and Ca in boys (all P < 0.05), similar conclusions were found in girls, except the OC and CTX. After adjusting for age, gender, smoking, drinking, and others, compared with the LFMI-HLMI reference group, the two high FMI groups (HFMI-LLMI and HFMI-HLMI) had a greater negative correlation with BMC, while the low BMC risk of the HFMI-LLMI group was the highest (OR = 33.28; 95%CI: 11.12-99.63; P < 0.001). The correlation between BMC of different body composition phenotypes in boys was greater than that in girls. HFMI-HLMI is a risk phenotype negatively associated with Ca content (β = -0.12; 95%CI: -0.19 to -0.04; P < 0.05). Regardless of body composition level, BMC was always negatively correlated with fat mass (LLMI: β = -0.27; 95%CI: -0.32-0.21; HLMI: β = -0.52, 95%CI: -0.65-0.40) and positively correlated with lean mass (LFMI: β =0.24; 95%CI: 0.20-0.28; HFMI: β =0.23, 95%CI:0.13-0.33) (all P < 0.001). Objective: To explore the relationship between serum irisin levels and glucose and lipid metabolism among adolescents in Yinchuan City., Methods: From 2017 to 2020, a conbination of convenient sampling and stratified cluster random sampling method were used to select 1219 adolescents aged 12 to 18 years old in Yinchuan City as research subjects. The height and weight were measured using the height and sitting height meter and the bioelectrical impedance analyzer. Blood indicators such as fasting plasma glucose(FPG), totalcholesterol(TC), triglyceride(TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C) were measured using fully automatic biochemical analyzer. Serum irisin levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA). Binary logistic regression was used to analyze the correlation between irisin and abnormal glucose and lipid metabolism., Results: The FPG, TC, HDL-C and LDL-C levels of subjects in the highest tertile of irisin levels were significantly lower than those of subjects in the lowest tertile of irisin levels(F values were 5.13, 3.15, 3.07 and 5.01, P&lt;0.05), and the differences were statistically significant(all P&lt;0.05). The serum irisin levels in the hyperglycemia group(t=2.87, P&lt;0.01), hypercholesterolemia group(t=2.36, P=0.02) and hyperLDL-Cemia group(t=2.34, P=0.02) were significantly lower than those in the normoglycemia group, normal TC group and normal LDL-C group. Meanwhile, the irisin level in the low HDL-Cemia group(t=-2.57, P=0.01) was significantly higher than that in the normal HDL-C group, and the differences were statistically significant(P&lt;0.05). Participants in the highest tertile of irisin had 0.51, 0.49 and 0.50 times the risk of hyperglycemia(OR=0.51, 95%CI 0.29-0.87), hypercholesterolemia(OR=0.49, 95%CI 0.27-0.89) and hyperLDL-cemia(OR=0.50, 95%CI 0.25-0.99) compared with those in the lowest tertile., Conclusion: Low levels of irisin are associated with the occurrence of hyperglycemia, hypercholesterolemia, and hyperLDL-Cemia in adolescents.

Vertigo is a complication of craniomaxillofacial contour plastic surgery characterized by dizziness from hypovolemia in the cerebral hemispheres and brainstem. The authors analyzed the current status and influencing factors of postoperative vertigo in patients who undergo craniomaxillofacial contouring and discussed improvements in nursing strategies. The authors investigated 418 patients admitted to the authors' hospital who underwent craniomaxillofacial contouring between November 2020 and October 2023 and divided them into asymptomatic and symptomatic groups based on syncopal precursors or vertigo. The authors screened the current status of vertigo in patients after craniomaxillofacial contouring and the factors affecting vertigo and determined nursing improvement strategies. After craniomaxillofacial contouring, 125 patients had vertigo symptoms. Postcraniomaxillofacial contouring syncope or vertigo was associated with age, patient vertigo history, family history, depression, weight loss, blood pressure at admission, feeding before getting out of bed, and the level of intraoperative hemorrhage Multifactorial logistic regression analysis revealed the association between postcraniomaxillofacial contouring syncope or vertigo and vertigo history, depression, weight loss, feeding before getting out of bed, and intraoperative bleeding volume. Vertigo precursor incidence after craniomaxillofacial contouring surgery is 29.90%. Its influencing factors are complex, suggesting that nurses need to improve the perioperative health education of craniomaxillofacial contouring surgery and optimize the nursing care, encourage patients to have a reasonable diet or provide parenteral nutritional support preoperatively, help patients get out of bed early postoperatively, encourage them to have multiple meals in little quantity before getting out of bed, and control the intraoperative bleeding, to ensure patient safety postoperatively., Competing Interests: The authors report no conflicts of interest., (Copyright © 2024 by Mutaz B. Background: Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a primary 4-repeat tauopathy with diverse clinical phenotypes. Previous post-mortem studies examined tau deposition sequences in PSP, but in vivo scrutiny is lacking., Methods: We conducted [ 18 F]Florzolotau tau positron emission tomography (PET) scans on 148 patients who were clinically diagnosed with PSP and 20 healthy controls. We employed the Subtype and Stage Inference (SuStaIn) algorithm to identify PSP subtype/stage and related tau patterns, comparing clinical features across subtypes and assessing PSP stage-clinical severity association. We also evaluated functional connectivity differences among subtypes through resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging., Findings: We identified two distinct subtypes of PSP: Subtype1 and Subtype2. Subtype1 typically exhibits a sequential progression of the disease, starting from subcortical and gradually moving to cortical regions. Conversely, Subtype2 is characterized by an early, simultaneous onset in both regions. Interestingly, once the disease is initiated, Subtype1 tends to spread more rapidly within each region compared to Subtype2. Individuals categorized as Subtype2 are generally older and exhibit less severe dysfunctions in areas such as cognition, bulbar, limb motor, and general motor functions compared to those with Subtype1. Moreover, they have a more favorable prognosis in terms of limb motor function. We found significant correlations between several clinical variables and the identified PSP SuStaIn stages. Furthermore, Subtype2 displayed a remarkable reduction in functional connectivity compared to Subtype1., Interpretation: We present the evidence of distinct in vivo spatiotemporal tau trajectories in PSP. Objective: To explore the effect of the 2016 Chinese second child policy and different maternal ages on adverse perinatal outcomes., Methods: Clinical data were collected from 22 monitoring hospitals in Hebei Province from January 1, 2013, to December 31, 2021. A total of 413,892 parturient were divided into 3 groups based on delivery age: 20-34, 35-39, and 40-55 years old. The clinical data were analyzed to explore the relationship among the 2016 Chinese second-child policy, maternal age, and various pregnancy risks., Results: Pregnancy complications showed an upward trend from 2013 to 2021.The top 10 incidences of pregnancy complications in Hebei Province were anemia, small for gestational age (SGA), large for gestational age (LGA), macrosomia, gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), premature delivery, preeclampsia (PE), postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), placenta previa, and placental abruption. The two-child policy was implemented in 2016. The incidence of pregnancy complications, anemia, GDM, PE, placental abruption, cesarean delivery, premature delivery, SGA, LGA, macrosomia in 2016-2021 was significantly higher than that in 2013-2015 (P<0.05), and the proportion of women of advanced maternal age (AMA, ≥ 35 years old) increased from 2013 to 2021. Advanced maternal age was a risk factor for most assessed adverse pregnancy outcomes, including GDM, PE, placenta previa, placenta abruption, cesarean delivery, PPH, premature delivery, SGA, LGA and macrosomia., Conclusion: After the adjustment of the "second-child" policy, the incidence of pregnancy complications increased. Moreover, the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes in AMA has increased. Early prevention and intervention should be implemented to cope with the occurrence of adverse perinatal outcomes., (© 2023.
