Disjunct distribution is a key issue in biogeography and ecology, but it is often difficult to determine the relative roles of dispersal vs. vicariance in disjunctions. We studied the phylogeographic pattern of the monotypic Conandron ramondioides (Gesneriaceae), which shows Sino‐Japanese disjunctions, with ddRAD sequencing based on a comprehensive sampling of 11 populations from mainland China, Taiwan Island, and Japan. We found a very high degree of genetic differentiation among these three regions, with very limited gene flow and a clear Isolation by Distance pattern. Mainland China and Japan clades diverged first from a widespread ancestral population in the middle Miocene, followed by a later divergence between mainland China and Taiwan Island clades in the early Pliocene. Three current groups have survived in various glacial refugia during the Last Glacial Maximum, and experienced contraction and/or bottlenecks since their divergence during Quaternary glacial cycles, with strong niche divergence between mainland China + Japan and Taiwan Island ranges. Thus, we verified a predominant role of vicariance in the current disjunction of the monotypic genus Conandron. The sharp phylogenetic separation, ecological niche divergence among these three groups, and the great number of private alleles in all populations sampled indicated a considerable time of independent evolution, and suggests the need for a taxonomic survey to detect potentially overlooked taxa. Introduction: Since December 2019, severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) has caused the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in China and worldwide. New drugs for the treatment of COVID-19 are in urgent need. Considering the long development time for new drugs, the identification of promising inhibitors from FDA-approved drugs is an imperative and valuable strategy. Recent studies have shown that the S1 and S2 subunits of the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 utilize human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (hACE2) as the receptor to infect human cells. Methods: We combined molecular docking and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) to identify potential inhibitors for ACE2 from available commercial medicines. We also designed coronavirus pseudoparticles that contain the spike protein assembled onto green fluorescent protein or luciferase reporter gene-carrying vesicular stomatitis virus core particles. Results: We found that thymoquinone, a phytochemical compound obtained from the plant Nigella sativa, is a potential drug candidate. SPR analysis confirmed the binding of thymoquinone to ACE2. We found that thymoquinone can inhibit SARS-CoV-2, SARS-CoV, and NL63 pseudoparticles infecting HEK293-ACE2 cells, with half-maximal inhibitory concentrations of 4.999, 7.598, and 6.019 μM, respectively. The SARS-CoV-2 pseudoparticle inhibition had half-maximal cytotoxic concentration of 35.100 μM and selection index = 7.020. Hiptage lushuiensis, a new species from the Hengduan Mountains, northwestern Yunnan Province, China, is described and illustrated here. This species was found growing at the margin of an open forest in the Nujiang Gorge of Lushui City. Hiptage lushuiensis is distinctive for its pink petals, 2 or more calyx glands, and large and pink samara with white hairs. This species is isolated in the deep gorge (25°51′N, 98°51′E, altitude 917 m), at the northern edge distribution range of the genus. These distinctive morphological differences and the geographic isolation suggest a history of long‐distance dispersal and allopatric speciation. Hiptage lushuiensis has a shorter filament but larger herkogamy than related species, suggesting that H. lushuiensis may have adapted to other pollinators with short but fat body such as Amegilla or Bombus spp. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

High levels of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) were observed in rural areas near a fluorochemical industrial park (FCIP) in the Yangtze River Delta region. The concentrations of total PFAS (∑PFASs) in soil, surface water, groundwater, and rainwater were in the range of 0.6-64.6 ng/g dry weight, 15.6-480.9, 4.8-614.6, and 13.4-542.2 ng/L, respectively. PFASs in rainwater and groundwater were higher than in surface water. The influence of the FCIP on rural soils extended to a distance of approximately 4 km based on the changes in PFAS compositions. The impact on surface water is mainly through direct river flow connected with contaminated sources, which may extend farther than 7 km in the case of unrestricted flow but much shorter distance for unconnected rivers. The penetration of PFASs in groundwater aquifers can extend as far as ca. 6 km, while direct water flow is the main transport route for PFASs. Among the edible species, jellyfish Rhopilema esculentum, is one of the most abundant and important fishery species in China. The jellyfish fishery is characterized by considerable fluctuations in catch and a very short fishing season. In this article, we first review the research results on the biology of R. esculentum, which previously were published in Chinese, as related to the jellyfish enhancement and fishery. Next, we review results from enhancement experiments conducted from 1984 to 2004, with the aims of stabilizing and increasing catch. During 2005 and 2006, stock enhancement of R. esculentum was carried out on a large scale for the first time in Liaodong Bay, China, where 414 million juvenile jellyfish (umbrella diameter > 1 cm) were released. We present results of these enhancements, including the survey methods, catch prediction, enhancement assessment, and fishery management. In 2005 and 2006, the recapture rate of released jellyfish was 3.0 and 3.2%, respectively. The fishermen earned ¥ 159 million during the 2 years. The ratio of the input (cost of culturing juvenile jellyfish) to the output (value of the sales) was about 1:18. The high commercial value of R. esculentum enhancement in Liaodong Bay makes this a very successful enterprise. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Near-surface atmospheric aerosols were collected at sampling frequency of 3 d per week for one year from August 2009 to July 2010 in Laoshan District, Qingdao, located in the mid-latitude coastal region of East Asia monsoon region. The samples were analyzed for cosmogenic nuclide beryllium-7 (7Be), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The annual average 7Be concentration was 6.83 ± 0.40 mBq m−3, with the variation range from 1.52 to 14.58 mBq m−3. The maximum and minimum levels were observed in September and May, respectively. Autumn and spring were the seasons with high 7Be concentrations and summer was the lowest 7Be season. Enhanced wet precipitation may have caused lower 7Be observed in summer when southeasterlies were prevailing. Higher 7Be concentrations in autumn 2009 were caused by the abnormal atmospheric circulation. Concentrations of HCHs, DDTs, and PCBs followed a trend of being lower in summer and higher in winter. Higher chlorinated PCB isomers were predominant in winter and lower chlorinated PCB isomers were predominant in summer. ∑OCPs generally showed positive correlations with 7Be but were interrupted by the “spring leak maximum” episode for 7Be in the atmosphere in April when the stratosphere–troposphere exchange was enhanced, and in December when abnormally high HCHs were observed. No significant correlation was found between 7Be and PCBs except for PCB28. Seasonal oscillations in 7Be and the ratios of POP/7Be were observed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Guizhou Province is one of the most important karst regions of southwest China, with 22 Primulina species. These species are highly habitat-specialized and dependent on the soils of the karst region, and many inter-species classifications are unclear. Therefore, studying the chloroplast genomes and estimating the divergence times of there species can not only provide a better understanding of interspecific relationships but also help to know the species speciation and divergence in the karst environment. So, we sequenced and assembled the chloroplast genomes of nine Primulina species (including six endemic species of Guizhou) and conducted chloroplast genome comparison analysis and phylogenetic study. The chloroplast genome structures of the nine Primulina species were quadripartite with total lengths of 152,869-153,364 base pairs (bp) and GC content of 37.55-37.64%. There are 132 functional genes annotated, respectively. A total of 375 simple sequence repeats and 375 interspersed nuclear elements were identified. The 30 highly preferred codons identified were used at similar frequencies in different species, respectively. A phylogenetic tree constructed on the basis of the 38 chloroplast genomes showed that Primulina species form a monophyletic group. Eleven mutational hotspot regions that could serve as potential molecular markers were identified, of which two regions near the 3' and 5' ends of the ycf1 gene were of appropriate size and can serve as molecular markers for phylogenetic studies of Primulina. The results of molecular clock analyses indicate that the three major branches of Primulina begin to diverge in the Miocene, and the number of species proliferated in the Pliocene and Pleistocene. Most of the species of Primulina in Guizhou Province were formed in the Pleistocene and rapidly diverged within a short period of time. Background: Few studies have focused on the incidence and correlation of social frailty (SF) with adverse health events in Southwest China. This study aims to explore the predictive value of SF for adverse health events., Methods: A 6-year prospective cohort study was employed, a total of 460 community-dwelling older adults aged 65 years and above were analyzed to provide a baseline in 2014. Participants completed two longitudinal follow-ups at 3 (2017, 426 participants involved) and 6 (2020, 359 participants involved) years later. A modified social frailty screening index was used in this study, and adverse health events such as physical frailty (PF) deterioration, disability, hospitalization, falls, and mortality were evaluated., Results: Among these participants in 2014, the median age was 71 years, 41.1% were male, and 71.1% were married or cohabiting, up to 112 (24.3%) of them were classified as SF. It was observed that aging (OR = 1.04, 95% CI = 1.00-1.07, P = 0.047) and having family members die in the past year (OR = 2.60, 95% CI = 0.93-7.25, P = 0.068) were risk factors of SF, whereas having a mate (OR = 0.40, 95% CI = 0.25-0.66, P = 0.000) and having family members to help with care (OR = 0.53, 95% CI = 0.26-1.11, P = 0.092) were protective factors of SF. The cross-sectional study demonstrated that SF was only significantly associated with disability (OR = 12.89, 95% CI = 2.67-62.13, P = 0.001) at wave 1. Baseline SF significantly explained the incidence of mortality at the 3-year (medium-term, OR = 4.89, 95% CI = 2.23-10.71, P = 0.000) and 6-year follow-ups (long-term, OR = 2.22, 95% CI = 1.15-4.28, P = 0.017)., Conclusion: SF prevalence was higher in the Chinese older population. Older adults with SF had a significantly increased incidence of mortality at the longitudinal follow-up. The Yangtze River drainage basins are China's most important economic development zones and also the locations of several large-scale fluorine chemical industries. In order to reveal the contribution from the tributaries at the dividing point between the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River with respect to perfluorinated substances (PFASs), 17 PFAS compounds in surface water, groundwater, and tap water samples were analyzed in the tributary system of the Jiujiang section of the Yangtze River. The total concentrations of PFASs in the surface waters ranged from 7.8 to 586.2 ng/L. High proportion of short-chain compound PFBS in surface waters in Nanchang City, Poyang Lake, and the Yangtze River was observed which is likely of WWTPs' origin.

Background: Fatty liver disease (FLD) is increasingly recognized as one of the most common chronic liver diseases in China. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and risk factors of FLD in Chengdu, Southwest China, and to provide a relevant basis for the prevention and intervention of FLD., Methods: Altogether 9094 subjects (4721 men and 4373 women) of over 18 years old who had received a medical checkup in the West China Hospital of Sichuan University between January and December 2007 were evaluated for FLD. FLD was diagnosed by ultrasonography. Body mass index (BMI), height, body weight, blood pressure, fasting plasma glucose (FPG), triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TCh), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) were measured using routine laboratory methods., Results: The overall prevalence of FLD was 12.5%, which was more than 3-fold higher in males than in females (18.9% vs. 5.7%, X2=359.624, P<0.001). The prevalence increased with age in females and males of less than 50 years. The prevalence of alcoholic, suspected alcoholic, and non-alcoholic FLD was 2.6%, 3.6%, and 6.3%, respectively. Multiple logistic regression analyses showed that 10 factors (male sex, age, BMI, FPG, hypertension, TG, TCh, HDL-C, LDL-C, and ALT abnormalities) were closely related to FLD. In heavy drinkers, obesity increased the risk of FLD by 23.78-fold (95% CI, 10.22-55.33), but heavy drinking was only associated with a 2-fold (95% CI, 1.50-2.66) increased risk in obese subjects., Conclusions: The prevalence of FLD among a health-checkup population in Chengdu, Southwest China was lower than the published for other areas of China. FLD in Chengdu adults was found to be closely associated with sex, age, BMI, and other metabolic syndrome features.

Objective: To test the reliability and validity of the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) in patients with low back pain in China., Methods: Eighty six patients (female 51, male 35, average age 39.5 +/- 10.1) with chronic low back pain were assessed with the ODI. The assessment was repeated 48 hours after the first test., Results: The Cronbach' Alpha coefficient for the ODI was 0.891. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) for the repeated tests was 0.854 (95% CI = 0.775-0.905). The exploratory factor analysis extracted two factors, which accounted for 61.91% of the total variance. Significant correlations were found between the ODI and the 6 domains of the SF-36., Conclusion: The Chinese version of Oswestry Disability Index has satisfactory reliability and validity. It can be used as an instrument for assessing chronic low back pain-related disability.
