The use of multiple digital technologies has addressed conventional exhibition display issues, improving public experience, and aiding in the understanding of historical changes in cultural heritage. This facilitates community sharing and international promotion. Furthermore, the promotion of novel digital application scenarios can encourage the growth of cultural consumption and the digital creativity industry. Beijing's Central Axis is a remarkable and well-preserved example of a traditional central axis in China's capital cities. It is comprised of numerous building complexes and archaeological sites located within the old city. This axis was first constructed in the 13th century, shaped in the 16th century, and continues to thrive today while remaining open to the future. By assessing its dynamic "growth" and "living" value, we have devised an innovative interpretation system plan that includes Augmented Reality Tours, immersive exhibitions in historical buildings, online exhibitions, and a series of public activities. The pilot project, implemented at the Drum Tower located at the northern end of the Central Axis, involved careful restoration and scientific transformation, accurate heritage documentation, and digital reconstruction. Digital creativity empowered and activated the historical building, achieving a comprehensive balance of conservation, utilization, and economics. The exhibition has garnered favorable feedback, particularly from the younger generation, who appreciate the combination of ancient cultural heritage themes and modern digital immersive displays. Constructed wetlands (CWs) are widely used in sewage treatment in rural areas, but there are only a few studies on field-scale CWs in treating wastewater-borne pesticides. In this study, the treatment and metabolic transformation of 29 pesticides in rural domestic sewage by 10 field-scale horizontal flow CWs (HF-CWs), each with a treatment scale of 36‒5000 m 3 /d and operated for 2‒10 years, in Guangzhou, Southern China was investigated. The risk of pesticides in treated effluent and main factors influencing such risk were evaluated. Results demonstrated that HF-CWs could remove pesticides in sewage and reduce their ecological risk in effluent, but the degree varied among types of pesticides. Herbicides had the highest mean removal rate (67.35 %) followed by insecticides (60.13 %), and the least was fungicides (53.22 %). In terms of single pesticide compounds, the mean removal rate of butachlor was the highest (73.32 %), then acetochlor (69.41 %), atrazine (68.28 %), metolachlor (58.40 %), and oxadixyl (53.28 %). The overall removal rates of targeted pesticides in each HF-CWs ranged from 11 %‒57 %, excluding two HF-CWs showing increases in pesticides in treated effluent. Residues of malathion, phorate, and endosulfan in effluent had high-risks (RQ > 5). The pesticide concentration in effluent was mainly affected by that in influent (P = 0.042), and source control was the key to reducing risk. The main metabolic pathways of pesticide in HF-CWs were oxidation, with hydroxyl group to carbonyl group or to form sulfones, the second pathways by hydrolysis, aerobic condition was conducive to the transformation of pesticides. Sulfones were generally more toxic than the metabolites produced by hydrolytic pathways. Rivers in urbanised cities are often polluted, black, and odorous, with poor water quality and deteriorated ecology. Despite many river restoration studies, assessments of ecological responses to river restoration practices remain scant. Benthic animals are useful biological indicators showing the change and succession of river ecosystems; however, previous studies have mainly focussed on a few target species without considering overall ecosystem integrity. Here, we used a multi-index biological assessment method, benthic index of biological integrity (B-IBI) to assess ecological responses to river restoration of the Shahe River in subtropical region of China. Spatiotemporal changes in the macrobenthos community structure after restoration were monitored to explore species succession. We found that the number of macrobenthos species increased from 16 to 42, with the emergence of some pollution-sensitive species during the restoration period. Molluscs showed widespread recovery, and their relative proportions almost doubled from 12.5% to 24.4%. Oligochaetes and chironomids were the pioneer species in the recovering communities, while gastropod molluscs and pollution-sensitive aquatic insects were transitional species that first settled during the initial recovery period. Based on our survey data, 25 candidate metrics were selected, and five core metrics (total taxa, Simpson diversity index, percentage of crustaceans and molluscs, percentage of predators, and percentage of collector-gatherers) were identified after screening to establish the B-IBI. Our analysis revealed a distinct improvement in the overall health of the river, with the proportions of "excellent" and "good" sites increasing from zero to 28.6% and from 14.3% to 42.9%, respectively. A correlation analysis indicated that water flow, molluscs, and total phosphorus content were the three drivers of ecological recovery in the Shahe River. To assess the effect of population genetic polymorphism on forensic research, we investigated the genetic polymorphisms of Chinese Kyrgyz group (n = 98) and evaluated forensic application values in Chinese Kyrgyz group and other 26 reference populations at 90 autosomal SNPs, and then combined with 34 SNPs and 37 STRs on Y chromosome to reveal the genetic background of Kyrgyz group in autosomal and Y-chromosomal inheritances, respectively. The 90 autosomal SNPs and 34 Y-chromosomal SNPs were sequenced base on next generation sequencing technology, and 37 Y-chromosomal STRs were analyzed by capillary electrophoresis platform. The results showed that cumulative power of discrimination and cumulative power of exclusion of 90 autosomal SNPs in the panel met the application need of forensic genetics in Kyrgyz group. The forensic effectivenesses of the panel were high in all 27 populations, although there were genetic differences among these populations. The forensic effectiveness of the panel was relatively higher in the European populations, but relatively lower in the African populations. The population genetic results indicated that the Kyrgyz group had the relatively closer genetic relationships with the reference East Asian populations at autosomal SNPs, and there were gene exchanges between the Kyrgyz group and East Asian, European populations based on the analytical results of autosomal SNPs, Y-chromosomal SNPs and STRs., (Copyright © 2022. Microbial sulfonamide degradation (MSD) is an efficient and safe treatment in both natural and engineered ecosystems. In order to systematically understand the research status and frontier trends of MSD, this study employed CiteSpace to conduct a bibliometric analysis of data from the Web of Science (WoS) and the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) published from 2000 to 2021. During this time, China, Germany, Spain, the United States and Australia played leading roles by producing numerous high impact publications, while the Chinese Academy of Sciences was the leading research institution in this interdisciplinary research category. The Chemosphere was the top journal in terms of the number of citations. MSD research has gradually progressed from basic laboratory-based experiments to more complex environmental microbial communities and finally to deeper research on molecular mechanisms and engineering applications. Although multi-omics and synthetic community are the key techniques in the frontier research, they are also the current challenges in this field. A summary of published articles shows that Proteobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria, Burkholderiales and Alcaligenaceae are the most frequently observed MSD phylum, class, order and family, respectively, while Bacillus, Pseudomonas and Achromobacter are the top three MSD genera. Background & Aims: Splenomegaly is usually taken as a consequence of liver cirrhosis. However, as a risk factor for cirrhosis, the impacts of spleen-liver axis on the development of cirrhosis are largely unknown. This study focused on the impacts of splenomegaly on the development of cirrhosis and assessment of the effects of celecoxib, a selective COX-2 inhibitor, on the splenomegaly and cirrhotic liver., Materials and Methods: Liver cirrhosis was induced by thioacetamide (TAA). Sixty rats were randomly divided into control, TAA-16w, TAA + celecoxib groups and normal, TAA + sham, TAA + splenectomy groups. Hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) or hepatocytes were co-cultured with splenocytes from those groups., Results: Splenocytes of cirrhotic rats stimulated the HSCs activation and induced hepatocyte apoptosis via enhancing oxidative stress. The hepatic levels of NOX-4 and the in situ O 2 - were profoundly reduced in TAA + splenectomy group by 50.6% and 18.5% respectively, p < 0.05. Celecoxib significantly decreased the hepatic fibrotic septa induced with TAA by 50.8%, p < 0.05. Splenic lymphoid tissue proliferation and proinflammatory cytokines of the cirrhotic rats were also obviously suppressed by celecoxib, p < 0.05. Compared with the HSC or hepatocyte cell line co-cultured with the cirrhotic splenocytes, the expression of alpha-SMA, NOX-4, in situ O 2 - or the levels of cleaved caspase3 and NOX-4 were significantly decreased in those cell lines co-cultured with cirrhotic splenocytes treated by celecoxib, p < 0.05., Conclusion: Splenomegaly contributed to the development of liver cirrhosis through enhancing oxidative stress in liver. The genetic polymorphisms of diallelic deletion/insertion polymorphic (DIP) loci in the Shaanxi Han population are still not clearly characterized. Herein, allele frequencies and forensic application efficiencies for 30 diallelic DIP loci were investigated in 506 unrelated healthy Han individuals from Chinese Shaanxi province. Based on population data of the same 30 diallelic DIP loci, the genetic differentiations, hierarchical clustering relationships and population architectures among Shaanxi Han and other 50 populations were further dissected through genetic and bioinformatics analyses. Results indicated that most of the 30 diallelic DIP loci were relatively high polymorphisms in the Shaanxi Han population; and there were the genetically intimate relationships between Shaanxi Han and the East Asian populations. In summary, this study provided significant insights into genetic background of Shaanxi Han population, and the multiplex amplification of these 30 diallelic DIP loci was appropriate for forensic individual identification and population genetic research in Shaanxi Han population., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Inc. The chemical species in PM 2.5 and air pollutant concentration data with 1-hr resolution were monitored synchronously between 15 November 2018 and 20 January 2019 in Linfen, China, which were analysed for multiple temporal patterns, and PM 2.5 source apportionment using positive matrix factorisation (PMF) modelling coupled with online chemical species data was conducted to obtain the apportionment results of distinct temporal patterns. The mean concentration of PM 2.5 was 124 μg/m 3 during the heating period, and NO 3 - and organic carbon (OC) were the dominant species. The concentrations and percentages of NO 3 - , SO 4 2- , and OC increased notably during the growth periods of haze events, thereby indicating secondary particle formation. Six factors were identified by the PMF model during the heating period, including vehicular emissions (VE: 26.5%), secondary nitrate (SN: 16.5%), coal combustion and industrial emissions (CC&IE: 25.7%), secondary sulfate and secondary organic carbon (SS&SOC: 24.4%), biomass burning (BB: 1.0%), and crustal dust (CD: 5.9%). The primary sources of PM 2.5 on clean days were CD (33.3%), VE (23.1%), and SS&SOC (20.6%), while they were CC&IE (32.9%) and SS&SOC (28.3%) during the haze events. The contributions of secondary sources and CC&IE increased rapidly during the growth periods of haze events, while that of CD increased during the dissipation period. Diurnal variations in the contribution of secondary sources were mainly related to the accumulation and transformation of corresponding gaseous precursors. In comparison, contributions of CC&IE and VE varied as a function of the domestic heating load and peak levels occurred during the morning and evening rush hours. Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) play crucial roles in enhancing cell survival, proliferation, invasion, and metastasis. We previously showed that hepatocellular carcinoma-derived CAFs (H-CAFs) promoted proliferation of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells. This study aimed to further explore the role of CAFs in HCC epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and the underlying mechanism. High CAF density was significantly associated with liver cirrhosis, inferior clinicopathologic characteristics, elevated EMT-associated markers, and poorer survival in human HCC. Within HCC cells, EMT was induced after co-culture with H-CAFs. Secretomic analysis showed that IL-6 and HGF were the key EMT-stimulating cytokines secreted by H-CAFs. Proteomic analysis revealed that TG2 was significantly upregulated in HCC cells with EMT phenotypes. Overexpression of TG2 promoted EMT of HCC cells, and knockdown of TG2 remarkably attenuated the H-CAF-induced EMT. Furthermore, during EMT, TG2 expression was enhanced after HCC cells were stimulated by IL-6, but not HGF. Inhibition of the IL-6/STAT3 signaling decreased TG2 expression. The principal TG2 transcription control element and a potential STAT3 binding site were identified using promoter analysis. Background: Young children's vision screening, as part of a preventative health care service, produces great value for developing regions. Besides yielding a high return on investment from forestalling surgeries using a low-cost intervention at a young age, it improves school performance and thus boosts future labor force quality. Leveraging low-skilled health care workers with smartphones and automated diagnosis to offer such programs can be a scalable model in resource-limited areas., Objective: This study aimed to develop and evaluate an effective, efficient, and comprehensive vision screening solution for school children in resource-limited areas. First, such an exam would need to cover the major risk factors of amblyopia and myopia, 2 major sources of vision impairment effectively preventable at a young age. Second, the solution must be integrated with digital patient record-keeping for long-term monitoring and popular statistical analysis. Last, it should utilize low-skilled technicians and only low-cost tools that are available in a typical school in developing regions, without compromising quality or efficiency., Methods: A workflow for the screening program was designed and a smartphone app was developed to implement it. In the standardized screening procedure, a young child went through the smartphone-based photoscreening in a dark room. The child held a smartphone in front of their forehead, displaying pre-entered personal information as a quick response code that duplexed as a reference of scale. In one 10-second procedure, the child's personal information and interpupillary distance, relative visual axis alignment, and refractive error ranges were measured and analyzed automatically using image processing and artificial intelligence algorithms. The child's risk for strabismus, myopia, and anisometropia was then derived and consultation given., Results: A preliminary evaluation of the solution was conducted alongside yearly physical exams in Luoyang, Henan, People's Republic of China. It covered 20 students with suspected strabismus and 80 randomly selected students, aged evenly between 8 and 10. Each examinee took about 1 minute, and a streamlined workflow allowed 3 exams to run in parallel. The 1-shot and 2-shot measurement success rates were 87% and 100%, respectively. The sensitivity and specificity of strabismus detection were 0.80 and 0.98, respectively. The sensitivity and specificity of myopia detection were 0.83 and 1.00, respectively. The sensitivity and specificity of anisometropia detection were 0.80 and 1.00, respectively., Conclusions: The proposed vision screening program is effective, efficient, and scalable. Compared with previously published studies on utilizing a smartphone for an automated Hirschberg test and photorefraction screening, this comprehensive solution is optimized for practicality and robustness, and is thus better ready-to-deploy. Biological pump is important to control the fate and distribution of organic contaminants, particularly in temperate and cold oligotrophic waters. However, it remains largely unknown how factors affect the long-term occurrence and fate of ionogenic organic compounds in subtropical eutrophic waters. The present study aimed to assess biogeochemical and physical factors affecting the annual occurrence, bioaccumulation, and trophic transfer of 14 antibiotics through planktonic food webs in the Pearl River, a large subtropical eutrophic river in China. This was done by carrying out 1-year simultaneous field observations of antibiotic concentrations in five water column compartments and assessing the variability of bioconcentration (BCF), bioaccumulation (BAF), and biomagnification (BMF) factors, which were influenced by plankton biomass, pH and temperature of water columns. The annual mean antibiotic concentration per site ranged from 1014.66 ± 535.66 ng L -1 to 1464.63 ± 1075.91 ng L -1 , and was positively correlated with phytoplankton biomass, but independent of the proximity of the sites to urban areas. Antibiotic occurrences in both phytoplankton and zooplankton were greatly influenced by a biodilution effect. The annual occurrence of antibiotics in the water column was modulated by biological pumps as well as their equilibrium partitioning, and indirectly influenced of eutrophication with pH increased with phytoplankton biomass and phytoplankton life cycling. BAF of antibiotics by plankton had biphasic correlations with temperature (n = 150, R 2  = 0.17-0.60, p < 0.001) and decreased with plankton biomass (n = 105-147, R 2  = 0.10-0.22, p < 0.001). The trophic transfer of antibiotics from phytoplankton to zooplankton (BMFs) were positively correlated with both phytoplankton biomass (n = 30, R 2  = 0.58, p < 0.001) and temperature (n = 132-150, R 2  = 0.12-0.43, p < 0.001). Mean BMFs of ciprofloxacin, lomefloxacin, ofloxacin, oxytetracycline, and tetracycline ranged between 0.18 and 2.25, implying these chemicals can undergo biomagnification along planktonic food webs. In recent years, insertion/deletion (InDel) markers have become a promising and useful supporting tool in forensic identification cases and biogeographic research field. In this study, 30 InDel loci were explored to reveal the genetic diversities and genetic relationships between Chinese Xinjiang Hui group and the 25 previously reported populations using various biostatistics methods such as forensic statistical parameter analysis, phylogenetic reconstruction, multi-dimensional scaling, principal component analysis, and STRUCTURE analysis. No deviations from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium tests were found at all 30 loci in the Chinese Xinjiang Hui group. The observed heterozygosity and expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.1971 (HLD118) to 0.5092 (HLD92), 0.2222 (HLD118) to 0.5000 (HLD6), respectively. The cumulative probability of exclusion and combined power of discrimination were 0.988849 and 0.99999999999378, respectively, which indicated that these 30 loci could be qualified for personal identification and used as complementary genetic markers for paternity tests in forensic cases. The results of present research based on the different methods of population genetic analysis revealed that the Chinese Xinjiang Hui group had close relationships with most Chinese groups, especially Han populations. Short tandem repeats (STRs) are the most widely used genetic markers in current forensic practice. However, STR mutations have troubled paternity test all the time. To ensure the accuracy in parentage testing, it is important to obtain population mutation data and identify factors that affect STR mutation rates. In the present study, we performed a comprehensive analysis on 322 mutation events in 19 autosomal STR loci from 12,752 meiotic events in 9,626 parentage test cases. The average mutation rate for the 19 STR loci was estimated at 1.329‰ per meiosis. Most mutations were single-step and occurred in the male germline. Further, the mutation rates increased with the paternal age at child birth, but not the maternal age. Multidimensional scaling analysis showed differences in the profiles of the mutation rates of the 13 CODIS STR loci among several different worldwide populations. Our findings also showed that locus-specific mutation rates were correlated with heterozygosity, and longer alleles have higher mutation rates than shorter alleles do. In this study, we analyzed the genetic polymorphisms of 23 Y-STR loci from PowerPlex® Y23 system in 916 unrelated healthy male individuals from Chinese Jiangsu Han, and observed 912 different haplotypes including 908 unique haplotypes and 4 duplicate haplotypes. The haplotype diversity reached 0.99999 and the discrimination capacity and match probability were 0.9956 and 0.0011, respectively. The gene diversity values ranged from 0.3942 at DYS438 to 0.9607 at DYS385a/b. Population differentiation within 10 Jiangsu Han subpopulations were evaluated by RST values and visualized in Neighbor-Joining trees and Multi-Dimensional Scaling plots as well as population relationships between the Jiangsu Han population and other 18 Eastern Asian populations. Such results indicated that the 23 Y-STR loci were highly polymorphic in Jiangsu Han population and played crucial roles in forensic application as well as population genetics. For the first time, we reported the genetic diversity of male lineages in Jiangsu Han population at a high-resolution level of 23 Y-STR set and consequently contributed to familial searching, offender tracking, and anthropology analysis of Jiangsu Han population.

Three paternity tests cases were found with a single locus mismatch at the locus D5S818 with PowerPlex®21 PCR Amplification Kit (Promega). Forward and reverse primers were redesigned to type the samples again and to evaluate if there were alleles dropped out. The results showed the existence of a silent allele 12 in all the three families, due to a point mutation that changed cytosine to adenine at 90 nucleotides upstream from the 5' end of the AGAT repeat sequences in all the six individuals. A single locus mismatch due to a silent allele may occur in any locus using any kit. Therefore, we recommend using multiple kits to confirm the results in paternity testing cases with mismatches, especially when there is a single locus mismatch with homozygote involved., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. Background: Clinical trials are a critical resource for the discovery of new prevention, diagnostic, and treatment methods for cancer. The most effective prevention and treatment modalities are based on previous clinical trial results. However, participation in clinical trials is underrepresented by racial/ethnic minority populations, Asian Americans in particular. Asian Americans are the least represented of any ethnic groups in clinical trials. The purpose of this study is to develop and evaluate a culturally and linguistically appropriate community-based educational intervention to increase knowledge of and intent to participate in cancer clinical trials among underrepresented Chinese Americans., Methods: Community-Based Participatory Research approach was used to guide the development, cultural tailoring, implementation, and evaluation of clinical trial intervention. First, 22 Asian community representatives were recruited as community health educators (CHE) who received 12-hour training on clinical trial education. Second, 262 members were recruited from 11 Chinese community organizations. Of those recruited, a total of 247 eligible Chinese enrolled and participated in the clinical trial education delivered by trained CHEs. Participants completed pretest before and posttest after the intervention., Results: Fifteen of 21 measures of clinical trial knowledge showed significant changes post the intervention (P < 0.05). Education remained the sole demographic factor increasing clinical trial knowledge in multivariate analysis., Conclusion: Clinical trial education should emphasize both benefits to science and the larger Asian community. Paddy fields near a mining site in north part of Guangdong Province, PR China, were severely contaminated by heavy metals as a result of wastewater irrigation from the tailing pond. The following clean water irrigation for 2 decades produced marked rinsing effect, especially on Pb and Zn. Paddy fields continuously irrigated with wastewater ever since mining started (50 years) had 1,050.0 mg kg−1 of Pb and 810.3 mg kg−1 of Zn for upper 20 cm soil, in comparison with 215.9 mg kg−1 of Pb and 525.4 mg kg−1 of Zn, respectively, with clean water irrigation for 20 years. Rinsing effect mainly occurred to a depth of upper 40 cm, of which the soil contained highest metals. Copper and Cd in the farmlands were also reduced due to clean water irrigation. Higher availability of Pb might partly account for more Pb transferred from the tailing pond to the farmland and also more Pb removal from the farmland as a result of clean water irrigation. Neither rice in the paddy field nor dense weeds in the uncultivated field largely took up the metals. However, they might contribute to activate metals differently, leading to a different purification extent. Rotation of rice and weed reduced metal retention in the farmland soil, in comparison with sole rice growth. Harvesting of rice grain (and partially rice stalk) only contributed small fraction of total amount of removed metal. In summary, heavy metal in paddy field resulting from irrigation of mining wastewater could be largely removed by clean water irrigation for sufficient time.

Objective: To investigate the ecological habit and characteristics of Trichobilharzia cercariae in the Huaihe river system., Methods: During June of 2002-May of 2003, Radix auricularia snails were collected monthly in Yaohe Fishery of the branch of the Huaihe River. The cercariae, released from the positive snails and collected by Shade Drop Bottle, were examined by direct press. Ducklings were infected by cercariae with different ages and examined for the infection by miracidia hatching method., Results: The results showed a typical seasonal fluctuation in infection rate of the snails, i.e. the cercariae detection rate was 0.81% in July, 0.65% in June, 0.07%-0.26% in April, May, August, September and October respectively, with a significant difference (chi2 = 26.73, P < 0.01). The release of cercariae from the snails showed a diurnal pattern in the natural conditions, with a significant peak between 8:00-12:00. It was proven that the main factors affecting the emerging of cercariae were temperature and light. The cercariae showed positively phototaxis. It was also showed that 50% mortality of the newly released cercariae between 18-25 degrees C occurred at 41 h, and all cercariae died within 52 h. The infectivity of cercariae was age-dependent. Under 18-25 degrees C, the highest infectivity was found at 0.5-8 h after emergence, then declined steadily to negative by 40 h post-emergence., Conclusion: The ecological characteristics of Trichobilharzia cercariae have been preliminarily verified in the Huaihe river system.

Cyclin D1 and its catalytic partner CDK4 are known to play important roles in the G1/S checkpoint of the cell cycle. The complex formed by CDK4 and cyclin D1 has been strongly implicated in the control of cell proliferation and prognoses in human malignancies. We investigated the immunohistochemical expression of cyclin D1, CDK4 and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) in 102 patients with laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC). Cyclin D1 overexpression was observed in 59 cases (57.8%) of LSCC, and was significantly correlated with tumor site, tumor size, lymph node metastasis and advanced stage. CDK4 overexpression was observed in 48 cases (47.1%), and was significantly correlated with tumor size and advanced stage. Cyclin D1 and CDK4 expression was significantly associated with cell proliferation measured by PCNA (r = 0.812, p < 0.0001 and r = 0.725, p < 0.0001, respectively). The Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that cyclin D1 overexpression was significantly associated with disease-free survival and overall survival. CDK4 overexpression was significantly associated with overall survival. When cyclin D1 and CDK4 are combined, the patients with co-overexpression of cyclin D1-CDK4 revealed the poorest overall survival. Additionally, in early-stage (I-II) cases, co-overexpression of cyclin D1-CDK4 was also revealed to possess a significant prognostic role. By multivariate analysis, cyclin D1 overexpression, lymph node metastasis and advanced stage were independent prognostic factors for disease-free survival. Cyclin D1 overexpression, CDK4 overexpression, tumor grade, lymph node metastasis and advanced stage were independent prognostic factors for overall survival. These findings indicate that cyclin D1 and CDK4 overexpression and/or co-overexpression of these proteins may play a pivotal role in the biological behavior of LSCC and may provide a strong prognostic implication., (Copyright 2001 Wiley-Liss, Inc.)

Study Objective: The aim was to describe the distribution of lipids and apolipoproteins in the Chinese population in Hong Kong., Design: This was a prospective, cross sectional, population based survey., Settings: The study was conducted in a single, self referred, out patient screening centre., Participants: Altogether 825 Chinese adults aged > or = 20 years were screened. One hundred subjects who had previously had lipid measurement and 29 who were taking lipid modifying drugs were excluded but 289 men and 407 women remained for further analysis., Main Results: Age standardised mean (SEM) lipids concentrations for Hong Kong Chinese were total cholesterol: men, 5.48 (0.05) mmol/l and women, 5.46 (0.06) mmol/l; triglycerides: men, 1.22 (1.03) mmol/l and women, 1.00 (1.03) mmol/l; high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol: men, 1.25 (0.02) mmol/l and women, 1.42 (0.02) mmol/l; low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol: men, 3.56 (0.05) mmol/l and women, 3.50 (0.06) mmol/l; apolipoprotein A-I (apo A-I): men, 1.34 (0.01) g/l and women, 1.46 (0.01) g/l; and apolipoprotein B (apo B): men, 1.15 (0.02) g/l and women, 1.06 (0.02) g/l. The total to HDL cholesterol ratios were men, 4.62 (0.07) and women, 4.10 (0.08); and apo B to apo A-I ratios (apo B/A) were men, 0.88 (0.02) and women, 0.75 (0.02). While levels of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, apo B, triglycerides, total/HDL cholesterol, and apo B/A were positively associated with age in both sexes and were higher in men before the age 50-59 years, they rose steeply thereafter in women to cross over the levels in men. In contrast, HDL cholesterol decreased with age while apo A-I remained constant, and both were consistently higher in women than in men in all age groups., Conclusions: Hong Kong Chinese have attained lipid profiles similar to those in other developed western populations. Environmental factors seem influential in this regard. Faced with the increasing coronary mortality of recent years, there should be a major effort to reduce the cholesterol concentrations in this population.
