As the last part of the Hercynian cycle in the Yangtze region, the Dongwu Movement included the eruption of the Emeishan large igneous province (ELIP) and was an essential event between the Guadalupian and Lopingian, which had significant implications for the paleo-oceanic environment and paleoclimate of the area. To study the changes in the sedimentary environment in the Guadalupian and Lopingian, the Zhenba section was selected, and its trace elements and rare earth elements (REEs) were analyzed. From analysis of the trace elements and REEs in the Guadalupian, the limestone samples had prominent typical shallow-water seawater deposition characteristics and were less affected by terrigenous detritus, which was in an arid oxidation environment; Sr/Cu ranged from 4 to 1381, the Rb/Sr value was low, δCe < 1, Ceanom < −0.1, Er/Nd ranged from 0.1 to 0.27, and Y/Ho ranged from 44 to 72. However, in the Lopingian, the limestone samples were more affected by terrigenous detritus, which was in a humid climate with a weak oxidation‒reduction environment; the Sr/Cu ranged from 1 to 656, the Rb/Sr value was high, δCe ≅ 1, Ceanom ≥ −0.1, Er/Nd < 0.1, and Y/Ho ranged from 26 to 44. The geochemical diagrams of TiO2‒Al2O3, Al2O3‒REE, La‒Th‒Sc, Th‒Co‒Zr/10, Th‒Sc‒Zr/10 and 87Sr/86Sr of a sample indicated that the terrigenous detritus of the sample mainly came from the South Qinling active continental margin, rather than the weathering of Emeishan basalt. Acid bentonite came from the Paleo-Tethys island arc or the island arc formed by the subduction of the South China Plate beneath the North China Plate, rather than the ELIP. Background and aims: Forest soil has numerous ecological functions, some of which are regulated by biogeochemical processes involving trace elements (TEs). However, the accumulation and transport of TEs in remote pure forest ecosystems have been poorly understood to date. Methods: We investigated the concentrations and pools of Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, Ni, Cr, Hg, and As in the soil horizons of Qinghai spruce and Qilian juniper forests at various elevations in the central Qilian Mountains, northwest China. The Enrichment Factor and Biogeochemical Index were used to evaluate the ecological security of TEs in forest soils. Results: The results indicate that the distribution of TEs concentrations in soil horizons of the two forest stands had spatial heterogeneity and element specificity. The TEs pools in the soil horizons of these stands increased with increasing soil depth. Among the elements studied, the total pools of Zn and Cr in the soil of the two stands were the largest, while the Hg and Cd pools were the smallest. Results further demonstrated that the forest ecosystem in the Tianlaochi catchment had large TEs storage, which was higher in Qinghai spruce forest than in Qilian juniper forest. Conclusions: Forest soils with lower TEs concentrations have higher enrichment degrees and potential ecological risk. In recent decades, tattooing has become a form of social and artistic expression. To apply a tattoo, the skin is marked by the internal injection of ink in the skin. Hence, it includes human health exposure to metals since the tattoo ink composition includes such elements. The present paper reports the determination and quantification of 8 elements (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb) in twenty tattoo ink colors available in the Greek market imported from the USA and China. The elemental content was carried out by atomic absorption spectrometry after microwave-assisted digestion. A comparison was carried out between the results of the present study and the maximum permitted concentrations as proposed in the ResAP and EPA guidelines, while the level of dermal exposure due to pigment application through ink injection was also estimated. All inks contained Cr, Cu, Ni, and Pb, while the content of As, Cd, and Co was below the detection limit in certain samples. Mercury was determined in three samples. Chromium, Cu, and Ni were present in the highest concentrations, while Cd and Hg contents were in general low. Most elements presented their maximum levels in the brown ink originating from USA. Basin water pollution is a global problem, especially in the densely populated areas. The Huai River Basin (abbreviated as HRB), including the Huai River system and the Yishu River system, is the sixth-largest and most densely populated watershed in China. However, there is a lack of comprehensive studies of river and well water throughout the Huai River basin, including hydrochemistry characterization and assessment of health risks. This study investigated water quality and pollution sources of river and well water in the HRB based on the hydrochemistry analysis and different water quality indices. The water body in the HRB showed weak alkalinity (pH = 8.4 ± 0.7) and had high TDS values (TDS = 339 ± 186 mg/L) with water types of HCO3-Ca-Mg and SO4-Cl-Ca-Mg in the Huai River system, and SO4-Cl-Ca-Mg in the Yishu River system. Atmospheric input and evaporation had less impact on hydrochemistry. Evaporite dissolution and carbonate weathering had a greater impact on hydrochemistry. Carbonate precipitation and cation exchange also influenced the dissolved solutes, especially Ca2+ and Na+. Samples had low to medium salinity hazards and sodium absorption ratios and were suitable for irrigation. For drinking purposes, samples were fresh water and have good or excellent according to the Water Quality Index (WQI). Land use types influenced water quality with the worst river water quality from cropland. Combining different assessment indices, the water quality of the Yishu River system performed better than the Huai River system. Absolute principal component analysis-multiple linear regression and the positive matrix factorization models identified the main pollutants as As, Ba, Cr, Ni, and Mn, with natural sources of As, Ba, and Ni and anthropogenic inputs of Cr, and Mn. Although the water quality of the HRB has improved in recent years, high potential risk from As, Cr, Mn, Ba, and Ni should be noted. "Trapiche-like" texture is distinct from "trapiche" texture as typically observed in emeralds, amethysts, and aquamarines. It is also occasionally encountered in sapphires from Changle, eastern North China Craton. The advent of the trapiche-like texture has enhanced the ornamental value of sapphire, although its origin is still unclear. In this study, techniques, such as Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, ultraviolet–visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), have been applied to test the spectroscopic data of the cores, arms, and blue sectors of trapiche-like sapphires from Changle and explore the mineralogical characteristics of different domains. The main component of the core, arms, and blue sectors of trapiche-like sapphire is corundum (Al2O3), with trace elements including Fe, Ti, Mg, Cr, V, Ga, etc. From arms to cores to sectors, trace elements show a trend of increasing and then decreasing. Nb and Ta elements are more enriched in the arms than in the sectors, indicating the existence of rutile. With changes in physicochemical conditions during magma evolution, rutile melted, and related voids were filled with glassy inclusions, which formed the arms of trapiche-like sapphires. Field observations of primary deposits, as well as petrological and geochemical analyses, reveal that the trapiche-like sapphire of Changle belongs to magmatic sapphire. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT Many minerals within the subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) contain structurally bonded hydrogen (commonly referred to as 'water'), which significantly impacts their physical properties and associated geodynamic processes. Observations from different localities worldwide make understanding the behavior of hydrogen during partial melting and mantle metasomatism a contentious issue, as different localities reveal either melting or metasomatism as the controlling factor. To provide new insights, major elements, trace elements and water contents of peridotite xenoliths from three volcanoes of the Shuangliao Volcano Group in Northeast China were analyzed. Minerals display variations in major and trace elements, particularly in clinopyroxene. Most olivine contains no observable water, while orthopyroxene and clinopyroxene retained 14–157 and 46–351 μg/g of water, respectively. Samples were divided into three types according to clinopyroxene trace element patterns, namely, type 1: light rare earth elements (LREEs)-depleted samples; type 2: 'spoon-shaped' samples featuring slight enrichment of the most incompatible elements (La and Ce) and relative depletion of mid-rare earth element; and type 3: LREE-enriched samples. Combined with major element trends, the Shuangliao SCLM experienced varying degrees of partial melting and cryptic metasomatism. Different water contents in the Shuangliao SCLM are a combined result of melting and metasomatism: less metasomatized samples (LREE-depleted and 'spoon-shaped') preserved the control of water contents by partial melting, while strongly metasomatized samples (LREE-enriched), equilibrated at higher oxygen fugacity and temperature, display considerable post-melting modifications of water contents, possibly associated with Fe redox. These characteristics suggest that hydrous and oxidized melts/fluids likely released by the stagnant Pacific slab in the big mantle wedge have metasomatized the shallow SCLM beneath Shuangliao, which indicates the circulation of materials released by the stagnant slab throughout the upper mantle. Intense anthropogenic activities pose a serious threat to groundwater quality in urban areas. Assessing pollution levels and the health risks of trace elements within urban groundwater is crucial for protecting the groundwater environment. In this study, the heavy metal pollution index (HPI) and health risk assessment were conducted to analyze trace element pollution levels and the non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks of groundwater resources in Sichuan Basin, SW China, based on the hydrochemical results of 114 groundwater samples. The HPI results displayed that 14.92% of groundwater samples were contaminated, primarily attributed to anthropogenic influence. The health risk assessment indicated that children faced the highest non-carcinogenic risk while adults had the highest carcinogenic risk. The Monte Carlo simulation further enhanced the reliability of the health risk model. A sensitivity analysis indicated that Pb was the most sensitive element affecting both non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks. Numerous Neoproterozoic granitic intrusions occur over a north-south distance of more than 700 km in the western Yangtze Block. In this paper, we use zircon U-Pb age, Lu-Hf isotopic, and whole-rock geochemical data to show that the Shimian granitic pluton, which was previously thought to be S-type granite in the area, is actually A-type granite. The selected fresh samples for this study are mainly porphyritic biotite monzogranites. They are weak peraluminous, A2-subtype granites, displaying high contents of SiO2 and K2O, low CaO, and Na2O, with the characteristics of high silica, rich potassium, and low sodium. They are enriched in incompatible trace elements, but low in trace elements compatible in mafic silicates and feldspars, and they are chemically characterized by having high REE and Ga abundances and low Al, Ni, Ba, Sr, and Eu abundances. The major and trace element behavior suggests that the granites underwent the process of advanced fractional crystallization and were likely generated by crustal partial melting. Zircon U-Pb age shows the Shimian granitic pluton was emplaced at 728 ± 20 Ma. The studied granites yield an average 176Hf/177Hf value of 0.282363 (εHf = 0.8) with a 94% confidence interval of 0.282334 to 0.282384 (εHf = −0.1 to 1.7), indicating that they are derived from the remelting of juvenile continental crust. We suggest that this newly identified A-type granite at Shimian, southwestern China, was more plausibly generated in an extensional setting as a result of slab window caused by ridge subduction, which can account not only for the formation of voluminous granitoids, but also for the basalts, boninitic pillow lavas, and SSZ-type ophiolites in western Yangtze Block. The contamination of trace elements in Chinese edible herbs has attracted worldwide concern over the world. The objective of the present study was to investigate the occurrence and exposure assessment of eight trace elements in Rhizoma Cibotii from China. For this purpose, the method of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry was employed to detect the contamination levels of target trace elements in 58 Rhizoma Cibotii samples. The results demonstrated that the trace elements of Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Pb were detected in all analyzed samples; the occurrence frequencies of As, Se, and Cd were 98.3%, 96.6%, and 98.3%, respectively. The highest mean levels were found in Zn (17.32 mg/kg), followed by Pb (8.50 mg/kg) and Cu (3.51 mg/kg). For a further step, one-way ANOVA was used to compare the difference of eight elements levels among groups, and Pearson's correlation analysis was used to explore the correlation between elements in Rhizoma Cibotii. A strong positive correlation between Zn and Cd was observed by Pearson's correlation analysis, which indicated that the possible presence of Cd contamination in Rhizoma Cibotii. Based on the contamination levels, the mean exposure of individual element and the health risks of eight trace elements in Rhizoma Cibotii were estimated by health risk assessment models. The calculated HQ values were less than 1, indicating that the contamination of trace elements in Rhizoma Cibotii did not pose significant health risks to human. In conclusion, the study provided baseline information on the contamination levels of trace elements in Rhizoma Cibotii. The potential contamination of shale gas wastewater generated from hydraulic fracturing to water resources is of growing concern, yet minimum attention has been paid to the impact of shale gas wastewater on the trace elements of the receiving waters. In this study, we analyzed the levels of 50 trace elements of a river that receives effluent from a shale gas wastewater treatment facility in the Sichuan Basin, China. Sixteen trace elements were detected in the surface water sample from the effluent discharge site, all of which were of higher concentrations than the upstream background level. Among the 16 shale gas wastewater-related elements, Sr, Ba, and Li were of elevated levels in the downstream water samples (24.9–44.2%, 5.0–8.0 times, and 17.8–22.8 times higher than the upstream background level, respectively). Shale gas wastewater effluent may be related to the accumulation of Sr, Ba, Li, and Cs in riverbed sediments near and/or downstream of the effluent discharge site and may lead to elevated pollution level of Sr and Li in downstream sediments. The ecological risk of the riverbed sediments was of medium to high level, with Cd contributing to the most risk, while shale gas wastewater-related elements are of low potential risk throughout the river. Copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and nickel (Ni) are essential micronutrients for aquatic life, but they produce adverse effects on aquatic organisms when environmental concentrations exceed a certain threshold. The objective of this study was to analyze the taxon-specific sensitivities of aquatic life to the three metals and assess ecological risks at exposure levels prevalent in the Songhua River, China. The results showed that sensitivities to these metals varied among different taxonomic groups, with intra-taxon sensitivities being lower than inter-taxa sensitivities, and the consistency of intra-taxon sensitivity increased from phylum to order. The maximum detected concentrations of Cu, Zn, and Ni in the Songhua River were 52.7, 166.0, and 65.3 μg/L, respectively, which met the water quality standards set by China but exceeded the chronic criteria established by the USA. A probabilistic risk assessment based on chronic toxicity data revealed that these three metals posed an intermediate to high risk to aquatic animals, with maximum risk products of 36.4% for Cu, 14.3% for Ni, and 6.2% for Zn, respectively. The Yarlung Zangbo River (YZR) is the longest plateau river in China and has famous tributaries, the Lhasa River and the Nianchu River. A total of 75 water samples were collected from the Yarlung Zangbo River Basin (YZRB) in this study to investigate the dissolved concentration, spatial distribution, and source of trace elements (Fe, V, Be, Ti, Mo, Se, Cd, Zn, Cu, Ni, Co, Mn, Cr, Ba, Tl, Pb, Hg, As, and Sb). The results indicate that only Cr and Tl contaminate water, while the other trace elements were in an unpolluted state. In addition, correlation analysis showed that there was a highly significant positive correlation between the concentrations of As, Sb, and Mo; there was also a highly significant positive correlation between the concentrations of Fe, Mn, Ti, Pb, Ni, Co, and Ba. The results of Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) showed that there were four sources of trace elements in the YZRB, including the resuspension and dissolution of sediments (16.283%), agricultural source (11.436%), lithological source (47.418%), and soil-forming rocks (6.374%). Cluster analysis combined with PMF normalized contribution analysis, which showed that the trace elements found in the YZR's mainstream were predominantly influenced by the surrounding rocks composition. Meanwhile, both the discharge of mining wastewater and sediments were marked in the Lhasa River. Additionally, agricultural activities were the chief contributors to the trace elements in the Nianchu River. Furthermore, the entire basin was subjected to the influence of soil-forming rocks. This study comprehensively analyzed and evaluated the physicochemical properties of water, the spatial distribution, and the pollution degree, and performed source analysis of trace elements in the YZRB. This research provides a foundational reference for further investigation of the spatial distribution and origins of trace elements in the rivers of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (QTP). Coal-fired power plants (CPP) usually release massive numerous amounts of potentially toxic metal(loid)s (PTMs) into nearby ecosystems. There have been relatively few studies targeted on the ecological influences of PTMs related to the CPP in arid area. In this work, the distribution pattern, source apportionment and environmental risks of As, Cd, Cr, Hg, Pb and a couple of seldom monitored PTMs (Se, Zn, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn and Ni) in the soils near a coal electricity integration base were investigated in Hami, a city in northwestern China. Nemerow synthesis pollution index, geo-accumulation index and ecological risk index were used to assess pollution state of these PTMs in soils, and ordinary Kriging interpolation was used to analyze the spatial distribution for these elements. Methods of CA, PCA, CA and PAM were carried out for quantitative source analysis. The research outcome includes: (1) the contents of individual PTMs in most samples were greater than the background values, the pollution degrees of Se, Pb, Hg, Cd and As were significant, and some areas exceeded the warning threshold value; (2) the main sources of these PTMs were natural sources (35%), coal mine sewage (11%), atmospheric release during coal combustion (21%), dust generated from coal and combustion products (33%); (3) attention should be paid to the open-pit coal mines, shaft coal mines and ash dumps where the contents of metal elements were significantly polluted; and (4) wind is the main driving forces of PTMs migration in arid areas. The Beiwagou Pb-Zn deposit, located in the western part of the Liaodong Peninsula, is a carbonate-hosted stratiform deposit with a Pb + Zn reserve of 0.08 Mt @ 4.14% (Pb + Zn). The orebodies occur as conformable layers and lenses and are strictly controlled by strata (the Paleoproterozoic Gaojiayu and Dashiqiao Formations) and lithology (plagioclase amphibolite and dolomitic marble). Given that previous studies have focused only on the mineralization features and mineralogy of deposits, herein, we report in situ trace element analyses of pyrite using LA-ICP-MS, together with in situ sulfur isotopes of pyrite, to constrain the composition, substitution mechanisms, source of sulfur, and sulfate reduction pathways of pyrite in the Beiwagou deposit. Based on pyrite morphology, texture, and chemistry, four pyrite types were identified: subhedral, porous-to-massive pyrite (Py1) related to chalcopyrite; subhedral, porous crushed pyrite (Py2) associated with fine-grained sphalerite; rounded and porous pyrite (Py3) related to the Zn-rich part of the laminated ore; and anhedral, porous-to-massive pyrite (Py4) associated with pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, sphalerite, and galena. Py1 is characterized by high As, Ag, Cd, In, Au, Cu, and Zn concentrations and low Te, Bi, and Mo concentrations, whereas Py2 has high concentrations of Co and Ni and low concentrations of other trace elements, such as Cu, Zn, Bi, and Te. Py3 is characterized by elevated As concentrations, low Co, Ni, In, W, Te, and Tl concentrations, and varying Pb concentrations, whereas Py4 has low Ag, Cd, In, Zn, Cu, and Mn concentrations and varying W, Co, Ni, Pb, Sb, and As concentrations. Significant correlations between some elements in each pyrite type suggest substitution mechanisms, such as (Zn2+ + Cu2+ + Mn2+ + Cd2+) ↔ 2Fe2+, Ag+ + (Sb)3+ ↔ 2Fe2+, and (Te+ + Ag+) + Sb3+ ↔ 2Fe2+, and the existence of a negative correlation between Co and Ni implies competition between both elements. The strongly positive δ34S values (12.11‰–23.54‰) are similar to that of seawater sulfates and likely result from thermochemical sulfate reduction (TSR). The Cr, Mn, Cu, Se, Ni, As, Hg, Cd, Pb, Zn, and Fe levels in chicken, duck, and quail eggs from Jiangxi Province were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), and the potential risks to human health were evaluated. The levels of trace elements from Jiangxi Province were not above the Chinese national standard. The target hazard quotient (THQ) values for the elements and total THQ for a combination of trace elements were <1, suggesting the absence of health risk from trace elements. The carcinogenic risks (CRs) of As, Cd, Cr, and Pb in all egg samples were negligible or within the acceptable range. These results demonstrate that trace element levels in eggs from Jiangxi Province of China were low and not associated with human health risk. In addition, levels of Fe and Zn were higher in quail eggs (30,166 and 172,356 lg.kg-1), chicken eggs (19,919 and 13,081 lg.kg-1), and duck eggs (27,123 and 14,422 lg.kg-1), suggesting that poultry eggs are good sources of trace elements essential to human health. Mining has brought many environmental problems to the surrounding soil, water, and air, with toxic elements contaminating surface water, threatening ecological balance and human health. This study selected the Wenyu watershed downstream from a large molybdenum mine in the Qinling Mountains as the study area, aiming to explore the impact of molybdenum mining on surface water quality. The content characteristics of Cd, Pb, Cu, Cr and Hg in surface water, sediment, and rock samples were analyzed by field sampling and chemical testing. The results showed only obvious Cd pollution. The pollution status and ecological risk level of surface water and sediment samples in the Wenyu Stream watershed were evaluated using the single pollution index method, geo-accumulation index method, and Hakanson potential ecological risk assessment method. Finally, the sources of Cd pollution and the impact of mining on Cd distribution in the Wenyu Stream were comprehensively discussed. The research results showed that Cd content in the Wenyu Stream was significantly affected by mining activity and the coefficient of variation of Cd content reached 99.44%. Among 22 surface water samples, 21 samples met the Class II water standard, indicating a clean overall water quality of the Wenyu Stream, and only one sample exceeded the Class II water standard with a mild pollution level. All 15 sediment samples were polluted to varying degrees and the most severely polluted sample had reached a moderate to strong pollution level. Most of the samples were at a moderate pollution level. The potential ecological hazard indexes of Cd content were at medium to very strong risk level, indicating that the overall sediment in the main ditch of the Wenyu Stream was under a strong ecological risk level. In order to realize the simultaneous removal of nine metal ions from water, in this study, an excellent flocculant suitable for the simultaneous removal of multiple metal ions in water was developed by using the excellent flocculation properties of graphene oxide (GO) combined with biological flocculants. First, this study investigated the concentrations and pollution levels of nine metal pollutants in surface water and groundwater of a typical city in central China. The maximum concentrations of these nine metal ions were Al 0.29, Ni 0.0325, Ba 0.948, Fe 1.12, As 0.05, Cd 0.01, Zn 1.45, Mn 1.24, and Hg 0.16 (in mg/L). Second, the three-dimensional structure diagram of GO was established. Gaussian16W software and the pm6D3 semi-empirical method were used to analysis the structure and the vibration of GO. The B3LYP function and basis set DEF2SVP was used to calculate the single point energy. Third, with varying the flocculation time, it was found that the maximum flocculation efficiency could reach more than 80.00% under the optimal conditions, that is, with a metal ion mixture of 20 mg/L. The optimal dosage of GO was 15 mg/L. The optimal time for bioflocculation efficiency was 2.5 h, and the optimal concentration of bioflocculant was 3 mg/L. Dashan Village area is one of the representative areas in China with high selenium concentration in the natural environment. A total of 133 topsoil samples have been collected in the Dashan Village area to explore the potential toxic elements (PTEs) background concentrations in soils under different land-use types for a comprehensive PTEs risk assessment (arsenic, cadmium, chromium, copper, mercury, nickel, lead, selenium and zinc). The results show that the geometric mean concentrations of As, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, Se and Zn found in the soil of the Dashan Village area were lower than the control standard for soil contamination risk in agricultural land. However, the geometric mean concentrations of Cd exceeded their corresponding standard values. For different land-use types, geometric mean concentrations of As, Cd, Cu, Hg, Ni and Pb in the arable soils were higher than in woodland soils and tea garden soils. Based on the potential ecological risk assessment, the woodland, arable and tea garden were at low-risk levels. Cadmium posed the highest ecological risk, while the other PTEs were of low risk in soils. Multiple statistical analyses and geostatistical analysis indicated that the concentrations of Cr, Ni, Pb, Cu, Zn and Se originated mainly from natural sources, while the concentrations of Cd, As and Hg could be influenced by anthropogenic activities. The Nanmushu Zn–Pb deposit is a large-scale and representative deposit in the Mayuan ore field on the northern margin of the Yangtze Block. This study investigates the trace element geochemistry of sphalerite from this deposit using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). The results show that the main trace elements in sphalerite include various trace elements, such as Mn, Fe, Cu, Ga, Ge, Ag, Cd, Pb, Co, Hg, Tl, In, Sn, and Sb. Among them, Ag, Ge, Cd, and Cu are valuable components that may be recovered during mineral processing or smelting techniques. The histograms, LA-ICP-MS time-resolved depth profiles, and linear scan profiles indicated that most trace elements occur in sphalerite as isomorphs, while partial Pb, Fe, and Ag occur as tiny mineral inclusions. The correlation diagrams of trace elements revealed that Fe2+, Mn2+, Pb2+, and Tl3+ can substitute Zn2+ in sphalerite through isomorphism. In sphalerite, Cd2+ and Hg2+ together or Mn2+, Pb2+, and Tl3+ together can replace Zn2+, i.e., ((3Mn, 3Pb, 2Tl)6+, 3(Cd, Hg)2+) ↔ 3Zn2+. Moreover, there is a mechanism of Ge4+ with Cu+ or Ga3+ with Cu+ replacing Zn2+ in the Nanmushu deposit, i.e., Ge4+ + 2Cu+ ↔ 3Zn2+ or 2Ga3+ + 2Cu+ ↔ 4Zn2+. Furthermore, the trace element compositions indicate that the Nanmushu Zn mineralization occurred under low-temperature conditions (<200 °C) and should be classified as a Mississippi Valley-type (MVT) deposit. Due to the lack of monitoring systems and water purification facilities, residents in western China may face the risk of drinking water pollution. Therefore, 673 samples were collected from Lhasa's agricultural and pastoral areas to reveal the status quo of drinking water. We used inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry to determine trace elements concentrations for water quality appraisal, source apportionment, and health risk assessment. The results indicate that concentrations of V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Ba, and Pb are below the guidelines, while As concentrations in a few samples exceed the standard. All samples were classified into "excellent water" for drinking purpose based on Entropy-weighted water quality index. Thereafter by principal component analysis, three potential sources of trace elements were extracted, including natural, anthropogenic, and mining activities. It is worth noting that geotherm and mining exploitation does not threaten drinking water safety. Finally, health risks were assessed using Monte Carlo technique. We found that the 95th percentiles of hazard index are 1.80, 0.80, and 0.79 for children, teenagers, and adults, indicating a non-carcinogenic risk for children, but no risks for the latter two age groups. In contrast, the probabilities of unacceptable cautionary risk are 7.15, 2.95 and 0.69% through exposure to Cr, Ni, As, and Cd for adults, children, and teenagers. Sensitivity analyses reveal As concentration and ingestion rate are most influential factors to health risk. As one of the five great lakes in China, the Chaohu Lake Basin is the main water source for regional economic and ecological development in Hefei city and is considered a source of drinking water. The spatial–temporal distributions and occurrence of soluble trace elements were studied in the surrounding ten rivers in the Chaohu Lake Basin as well as water quality and risk assessment during the normal and wet seasons. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed that the main source of river pollution during the two seasons was the mining industry. High values of most elements were found in the northwestern rivers in the two seasons. The temporal changes in the elements showed that the distributions of As, Mn, Cd, and Cu in the two seasons were very different, but the trends of Ni, Co, and V were basically the same. The sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) showed that almost all river samples needed to be treated before irrigation, and the water quality index (WQI) showed that most samples were of excellent water quality for drinking. The ecological risk assessment results showed that the risks in the two seasons were all slight. The results of the health risk evaluation suggested that no noncarcinogenic risks were found in the normal season and that the carcinogenic risks from Cr and As reached their highest levels in the normal and wet seasons, respectively. This research can provide vital data for rational water control and water quality conservation, offer a scientific basis for ecological environment safety, and offer a reference for carcinogenic and noncarcinogenic health risks to regional residents. To investigate the interrelationships between metal elements in soil–medicinal plant systems, 51 pairs of soil and Chinese herbaceous peony samples were collected from Bozhou City, China. Our results revealed that the major and trace elements in soils and Chinese herbaceous peony samples were in descent order as: Al > Fe > Mn > Cr > Zn > Cu > Pb > As > Cd for soil samples, and Al > Fe > Zn > Mn > Cu > Cr > Pb > As > Cd for peony samples. The pollution indices of enrichment factor and Nemerow integrated pollution index both indicated that Cr was the priority pollutant in soils and the other elements (Mn, As, Fe, Cd, Pb, Cu and Zn) were slightly elevated. In general, the pollution load index indicated that the studied soils were slightly contaminated by the nine elements. Furthermore, there existed a significant relationship between the Cr content in peony samples and that in soils, and soil pH (P < 0.01), indicating that the main source of Cr in Chinese herbaceous peony was probably from soils. Additionally, the Cr content in peony samples displayed the highest hazard quotient value, followed by As, Cu, Al, Fe, Zn, Mn, Cd and Pb. Although the hazard quotient for all elements and hazard index were lower than 1, which indicated no adverse health effects for adults, it was necessary to strengthen the control of soil Cr content in the process of peony planting. Dietary uptake is well known as the predominant pathway of heavy metal bioaccumulation in organisms. Our study used a typical tropical reservoir and fish as a modeling system to test the hypothesis that feeding habits and living habitats significantly affect heavy metal bioaccumulation in fish. Specifically, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb concentrations in water, sediment, and fish, and δ13C and δ15N in 13 fish species were detected in the Songtao Reservoir of Hainan Province, southern China. Our results indicated that Zn concentration in carnivorous fish was higher than in omnivorous fish. Principal components analysis visually differentiated pelagic, benthopelagic, and demersal fish groups. Moreover, we found that the fish feeding in the demersal habitat showed higher heavy metal levels than those in the pelagic habitat. Additionally, the heavy metal contents in demersal fish were significantly positively correlated with sediments, while no positive correlation was observed in pelagic-feeding fish. The δ15N and the concentration of Ni, Zn in fish had a significantly positive correlation, suggesting the potential biomagnification. In contrast, Ni, Fe, Cu, and Cd negatively correlated with fish body weight/length, indicating the growth dilution effects. Finally, the estimated daily intake (EDI) of the metals was far below the provisional tolerable daily intake (PTDI), and target hazard quotients (THQ) were <1.0, indicating that the fish had no risk for consumption risks. Overall, our finding partially validated the hypothesis that the feeding habits and living habitats significantly influence heavy metal bioaccumulation in fish, which might be a broad generality for metal exposure scenarios in aquatic environments. The Yangtze River Basin, one of China's five major watersheds and a primary source of drinking water for the country, is experiencing serious environmental pollution as heavy metals are discharged into its rivers. To evaluate the water quality of the river, determined water quality parameters were compared with the maximum permissible limit values recommended by the World Health Organization and Chinese drinking water standards. Physical and chemical analyses were conducted on water samples taken from 19 locations along the river's path. The study quantified the contents of sodium (Na), magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca), strontium (Sr), barium (Ba), lithium (Li), cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), scandium (Sc) and mercury (Hg). The results show that the average values of Mg, Sr, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn and Sc are higher than the historical background values. Moreover, through a correlation analysis it was concluded that these nutrients and trace metals have high values due to anthropogenic pollution in the study area. The computed WQI values range between 9.59 and 20.26, indicating excellent water quality in the river basin. Finally, hazard quotient (HQ) values show that exposure to the detected pollutants will have no adverse effects on human health and does not pose a potential non-carcinogenic risk. In order to assess the metal pollution in the Wujiang River, concentrations of Cu, Zn, Fe, Mn, Pb, Cd, As, and Hg in the water, sediments, and two fish species Cyprinus carpio and Pelteobagrus fulvidraco from the middle reaches (Tuomugang, TMG) and lower reaches (Wulong, WL) of the Wujiang River were examined. The results indicated that all metal concentrations were lower than the values for grade one water quality according to the Environment Quality Standard for Surface Water of China (GB 3838–2002). The bioavailable fraction concentrations of Zn, Fe, Mn, Pb, and Hg in WL were significantly higher than those in TMG (p < 0.05), indicating that these metals in sediments of WL have higher bioavailability and mobility. The Cu, Zn, Fe, Pb, As, and Hg were mainly related to the residual fraction, while the Mn and Cd were mainly associated with the non-residual fraction. The risk assessment code (RAC) and the secondary phase to the primary phase (RSP) values indicated that Mn and Cd have a high risk of secondary release. The mean metal concentrations in the liver of the two fish species were higher than those in muscle. The higher metal concentrations of fish in WL suggested that bioaccumulation of metals in fish could be influenced by metal bioavailability. No identical relationships between metal concentrations and fish length were manifested in the present study. The values of target hazard quotient (THQ) and hazard index (HI), and carcinogenic risk (CR) of metals for the consumption of C. carpio and P. fulvidraco indicated that the anglers would likely not experience significant non-carcinogenic risk, but the carcinogenic risk of As cannot be ignored. In this study, distribution and accumulation of trace elements (Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, and Pb) in water, tissues of aquatic organisms (e.g. fishes: Oreochromis niloticus, Platycephalus indicus, Clupanodon punctatus; crabs: Charybdis japonica, Portunus sanguinolentus, and Charybdis varuegata; prawns: Litopenaeus vannamei, Metapenaeus joyneri, Penaeus japonicas, Penaeus penicillatus; mollusks: Mytilus spp., Perna spp.), and trophic transfer in food web were investigated in Yundang Lagoon at Xiamen in China. Most of the studied metals such as Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, Cd, and Pb were biodiluted in the food web except As which was biomagnified in the food web. Moreover, the target hazard quotient and total target hazard quotient risk values were higher than threshold limit values indicating that non-carcinogenic health risk to the inhabitants due to consumption of aquatic organisms. The Fuchuan ophiolite is located in the northeasternmost segment of the Neoproterozoic Jiangnan orogen and consists mainly of harzburgites, with minor dunites, pyroxenite and gabbro veins and dykes. In order to investigate the genesis and tectonic setting of the Fuchuan ophiolite and chromitites, in situ analyses of unaltered chromites and silicates were carried out. Trace element analyses of unaltered chromites from the Fuchuan chromitites indicate the parental magma is of mid‐ocean ridge basalt (MORB)‐like origin, with the Ti/Fe3+#–Ga/Fe3+# diagram of chromites showing that the chromitites are a result of melt/rock interaction of MORB melts with mantle peridotites, and that the Fuchuan harzburgites present the dual features of MORB and supra‐subduction zone peridotites (SSZP). Trace and rare earth element (REE) analyses of olivines and orthopyroxenes from the Fuchuan harzburgites hint at the possibility of mantle metasomatism influenced by SSZ‐subducted fluids. Finally, integrating with previous study, the Fuchuan ophiolite and chromitites might have been formed in a back‐arc spreading ridge between the Yangtze and Cathaysia blocks during the Neoproterozoic. Water inrush disasters in mining areas are one of the most serious geological disasters in coal mining. The purpose of this study is to study the establishment of a water chemical database and water inrush source discrimination model in the Weibei coalfield to provide the basis for regional hydrogeological conditions for future mining under pressure in the Weibei area, as well as a basis for the rapid identification of water inrush sources in the Weibei coalfield. In this paper, a conventional hydrochemical and trace element discrimination model for mine water inrush was established, and the hydrochemical characteristic files of the entire mining area were integrated. Based on 10 indicators, three hydrochemical discrimination models of rock stratum aquifers were established. Through the Mahalanobis distance test, it was found that the six selected variables, K+ + Na+, Mg2+, NH4+, Cl−, SO42−, and pH, have significant discrimination ability and good effect and can effectively distinguish the three main water inrush aquifers in the Weibei mining area. Then, the clustering stepwise discriminant analysis method was used to select 24 water samples and 14 trace element indicators from the conventional water chemistry test results. Based on principal component analysis, a principal component analysis discriminant model of trace elements was established for the four main aquifers. The accuracy and misjudgment rate of the Bayes multi-class linear discriminant using conventional ions as explanatory variables were 64.3% and 35.7%, respectively, showing a poor discriminant effect. On this basis, seven characteristic trace elements were analyzed according to Bayes multi-class linear discriminant analysis, the mutual influence and restriction relationship regarding the migration of these seven trace elements in the groundwater system of the mining area was determined, and the modified Bayes multi-class linear discriminant analysis model of trace elements for the water inrush source was established, which was more accurate than the conventional ion Bayes multi-class linear discriminant analysis model. To obtain systematic knowledge on the waterborne pollution status and ecological and human health risk of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) and metals in the southeastern Bohai Sea, seawater samples were collected in three seasons from 2014 to 2018. TPHs and mercury (Hg) levels were determined by ultraviolet spectrophotometry and cold atomic absorption spectrometry, respectively, and concentrations of copper (Cu), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd) were detected by anodic stripping voltammetry. Spatial distribution patterns indicated that these waterborne pollutants are mainly sourced from terrestrial inputs. Temporal variation showed that Pb contents decreased in the past five years, and summer exhibited higher concentrations of Hg, Cu, and Cd than spring and autumn. Spearman's rank correlation coefficients demonstrated that temperature correlated positively with Cu content, while dissolved oxygen, pH, and suspended particulate material correlated negatively with pollutant concentrations. While hazard quotient values were lower than 1 for TPHs, Hg, Pb, and Cd, the hazard quotient of Cu (4.88) was greater than 1, suggesting potential ecological risks of this element in seawater of the southeastern Bohai Sea. The total target hazard quotients of Hg, Cu, Pb, and Cd in seawater of the southeastern Bohai Sea were all lower than 1, which indicated that there was no noncarcinogenic risk caused by heavy metals in seawater of the southeastern Bohai Sea. However, the carcinogenic risk of Cd (1.54 × 10−5) was in the range of 10−6–10−4, which may lead to the occurrence of cancer. In this study, 24 surface water samples were collected from the main trunk/tributary of the Lijiang River during the wet season (April) and the dry season (December) in 2021. The total concentration of 11 heavy metal(loid)s (Al, Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Ni, Co, Cd, Mn, As, and Hg) was determined to investigate their physicochemical properties and spatial-temporal distribution characteristics. The heavy metal evaluation index (HEI) and the positive matrix factorization (PMF) model were employed to evaluate water quality and to reveal quantitatively identified pollution sources for further investigation to obtain a health risk assessment using the hazard index (HI) and carcinogenic risk (CR) of various pollution sources. The mean concentrations of heavy metal(loid)s in surface water in the wet and dry seasons were ranked as: Al > Mn > Zn > Ni > Cd > Cr > Cu > As >Hg = Pb > Co, with the mean concentration of Hg being higher than the national Class II surface water environmental quality standard (GB3838-2002). In terms of time scale, the concentration of most heavy metal(loid)s was higher in the wet season; most heavy metal(loid)s were distributed mainly in the midstream area. HEI index indicated that the main water quality status was "slightly affected" in the study area. Five potential sources of pollution were obtained from the PMF model, including industrial activities, traffic sources, agricultural activities, domestic waste emissions, and natural resources. The source-oriented risk assessment indicated that the largest contributions of HI and CR were agricultural sources in the Lijiang River. PM2.5 metal pollution significantly harms human health. The air quality in Wuxi is poor, especially in winter, and long-term monitoring of PM2.5 elements comprising has not been performed previously. In the present study, 420 PM2.5 samples were collected from January 2016 to December 2020. Eleven elements, including Al, Mn, Ni, Cr, As, Cd, Sb, Hg, Pb, Se, and Tl, were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The mean PM2.5 level was 56.1 ± 31.0 μg/m3, with a tendency of yearly decreasing and a significant seasonal distribution variation. The concentration of 11 elements in the PM2.5 samples was 0.38 ± 0.33 μg/m3. Al was the highest element with a range of 37.5–2148 ng/m3. Meanwhile, the spatial distribution differences were compared by literatures review. Based on the Crystal Ball model, health risks were assessed dynamically using Monte Carlo uncertainty analysis. After 10,000 simulations, the mean value of the hazard index for nine elements was 0.743, and Mn contributed the most to the hazard index among elements, with a correlation of 0.3464. The average carcinogenic risk was 1.01 × 10−5, which indicated that the non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks were within the acceptable range. However, considerable attention should be paid to the potential health risks associated with long-term Al, Mn, and As exposure. This study provides detailed data on local atmospheric pollution characteristics, helps identify potential risk elements, and contributes to the development of effective regional air quality management. BACKGROUND: The quality of soil is directly related to human health and the safety of agricultural products, which has important references for agricultural planting and land planning. As an important vegetable basket base in Chengdu, Tangchang Town has developed agricultural planting, but the recent soil quality in the region is still unclear. OBJECTIVES: In order to accurately understand the current content of nutrient and heavy metal elemental characteristics and soil quality grade of topsoil in the Tangchang agricultural planting area. METHODS: According to 1 ∶ 50000 soil quality geochemical survey, 810 topsoil samples were collected. The contents of N, P, K, As, Cd, Hg, Pb, Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Se and pH in these soil samples were determined by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, inductively coupled plasma - mass spectrometry, atomic fluorescence spectrometry, element analyzer and ion selective electrode method. The element geochemical characteristics and soil nutrient grade, soil environmental quality grade and comprehensive soil geochemical grade were then evaluated. RESULTS: (1) Compared with the general topsoil in China, Zn and Pb in the topsoil of the study area are slightly enriched, Se is relatively enriched, N, P, Cd and Hg are strongly enriched. The topsoil is generally weakly acidic. (2) The comprehensive grade of soil nutrients is rich in second grade, accounting for 88. 0% of the area, and the soil fertility is rich. The proportion of the first grade soil area in the environmental quality grade of the eight heavy metal elements in the soil is more than 96. 0%, and the comprehensive environmental quality grade is dominated by first grade clean type, accounting for 98. 06%. The comprehensive quality of soil is mainly grade one, accounting for 85. 85%. (3) The area of selenium-rich soil in the region is 2. 49km², accounting for 3. 7%, sporadically distributed in the central study area. Copper-rich soil area is 63. 13km2, accounting for 94. 0%, and zinc-rich soil area is 63. 31km2, accounting for 94. 17%. Heavy metals pollution in pharmaceutical industries received increasing attention. A total of 94 soil samples were collected in this study. Results showed the mean contents of Hg, Cd, As, Pb, Ni and Cu were 0.21, 0.26, 9.59, 55.06, 51.52 and 50.81 mg·kg−1, respectively. The spatial distribution of metals in topsoil largely attributed to the pharmaceutical production process. The distribution of Hg and As were related to the production of medical absorbent cotton. While Ni was related to the fuel supply of Ni-rich coal. Cr, Cu and Pb mainly distributed in the process which they were used as catalysts. The vertical migration of metals was complex in soil. To a great extent, it was related to the texture of the soil and the properties of metals in this filed. The total non-cancer and cancer human health risk were within the limits of USEPA (10–6 a−1). Early Cambrian black shales on the Yangtze Platform host a regionally distributed highly metalliferous sulfide-rich carbonaceous unit which has been the subject of extensive debate. This marker unit, with a few centimeters or tens of centimeters in thickness, displays extreme enrichment in Mo and Ni (wt% range), and in a broad spectrum of other metals such as As, Au, PGE, Re, Cu, Zn, Cd, Ag, Sb, Se, Tl, and Hg, and occurs discontinuously along the western passive margin of the Yangtze Platform. It grades laterally in stratigraphically equivalent meter-thick vanadium-rich shale and tens-of-meter-thick sapropelite (combustible shale). New Cu and Zn isotope data, combined with existing Cd, Cr, Ni, Mo, Hg, and Se isotope and other chemical data, allow to attempt an integrated view on the formation of this intriguing unit of hyper-enriched metalliferous black shale. The authigenic Cu enrichment in the 1000-ppm range has produced no or little Cu isotope fractionation (0.03 ± 0.26 ‰ δ65Cu) beyond the lithogenic background. Heavy zinc and cadmium isotope enrichment in the sulfidic samples (1.11 ± 0.18 ‰ δ66Zn, 0.31 ± 0.10 ‰ δ114Cd) is controlled by sulfide fractionation and contrasts with V-rich and barren shale (0.60 ± 0.18 ‰ δ66Zn, 0.00 ± 0.14 ‰ δ114Cd). The distinctly negative Ni isotope composition of the metalliferous unit (−0.84 ± 0.05 ‰ δ60Ni) with Ni in the percent range has been interpreted as due to hydrothermal activity related to the leaching of mafic rocks and their sulfides. Sorption processes (Fe-oxyhydroxides) and redox cycling in the water column and the bottom sediment with microbial activity could be an alternative interpretation. The extreme metal enrichment can be understood as due to a process chain, from high biological productivity in the oxic photic zone to sulfate reduction in the deeper sulfidic water column and upper sediment layer. Key to the metal enrichment seems to be extremely low clastic sedimentation and advanced carbon destruction by anaerobic oxidation. The water and sediment samples were collected from the Yu River and Taowanbei River during periods of summer and winter. The NCPI , EWQI , I geo and PERI were used to evaluate the pollution degree and cumulative ecological risk of HMs in the water and sediments. The PMF model was used to analyze the sources of HMs in river sediments. The pollution degree of Cd, Hg and Zn in the water reached the severe pollution level, in the rank of Hg > Zn > Cd. Cd and Zn in sediments are heavily polluted, Cu is lightly polluted, Pb and As are within the warning range, and the pollution rank is Cd > Zn > Cu > Pb > As. The cumulative ecological risk of HMs in sediments reached extremely strong level, mainly Cd and Hg. The main sources of HMs in sediments are mining sources, mixed agricultural and transport sources, and natural sources, which contributed 42.1 %, 34.1 % and 23.8 %, respectively. To evaluate the health risks of drinking water in Hanyuan County, 96 samples of peripheral drinking water were collected from 30 sites in the area. The samples were then analyzed for chemical properties including Fe, Mn, NH3-N, NO 3 - , F−, Pb, Hg, As, Cr(VI), Cd, and so on. The health risks of ten trace elements in drinking water were probabilistically assessed using the health risk assessment model and Monte Carlo simulation. On this basis, sequential indicator simulations were used to classify the health risk levels of drinking water in the region, to conduct hierarchical management and control. The results showed that except for NO 3 - , all other indicators met World Health Organization standards and China's drinking water sanitation standards. Drinking water presents a specific carcinogenic risk to adults, and the cumulative contribution of As and Cr(VI) exceeds 95%, and has a specific non-carcinogenic risk to children if the cumulative contribution of F−, NO 3 - , and As exceeds 90%. Grade I, II, and III non-carcinogenic risk areas accounted for 0.89%, 24.72%, and 74.39% of the total area of Hanyuan County, respectively, while grade I, II, and III carcinogenic risk areas accounted for 27.71%, 45.56%, and 26.73% of the total Hanyuan County area, respectively. Chemical pollutants present a substantial threat to the survival of the green turtle (Chelonia mydas). In this study, the concentrations of 12 trace elements (TEs) in seawater, sediments, and green turtle forage and eggshells from the Xisha Islands in the South China Sea, along with their patterns of transfer and accumulation, were identified. The results revealed that the median TE concentrations in seawater and sediments were lower than the first-grade limit values of the national standard in China, indicating a low ecological risk. The concentrations (μg·g−1) of TEs in forage ranged from 0.05–0.69, 3.43–14.4, 157–2391, 27.9–124, 2.05–9.39, 0.30–9.78, 2.01–80.50, 0.18–5.76, 0.06–0.98, 2.00–18.4, 0.02–0.24, and 0.01–0.09 for Cr, Mn, Sr, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Se, Cd, As, Pb, and Hg, respectively. Seawater, sediments, turtle forage, and eggshells exhibited different TE profiles, which were driven by Hg, Sr, Cr, and Pb in seawater and sediments; Fe and Ni in sediments; Cd and As in forage; and Zn, Se, and Cu in eggshells. The contents of Cu, Zn, and Se increased slightly with trophic level, indicating that they were transferred through dietary pathways. Although Cd and As appeared to bioaccumulate in green turtle forage, it was not transferred to their eggshells, which may be related to the excretion and metabolism process in the mother's body. Heavy metal(loid)s (HMs) contamination in agricultural soil and crops is related to the quality and safety of agricultural products and public health and has attracted worldwide attention. This study systematically investigated the bioaccumulation of HMs including Cd, Pb, Cr, Hg, As and Se in soil and associated crops (Tea, Plum and Corn) in Guizhou Province, China, and assessed the health risks of the edible part of the crops using the bioconcentration factor (BCF), geoaccumulation index (Igeo), and target hazard quotient (THQ). The results indicate that the mean concentrations of Pb (39.54 ± 16.56 mg/kg), Cr (122.50 ± 33.36 mg/kg), Hg (0.26 ± 0.33 mg/kg), As (25.40 ± 21.34 mg/kg), and Se (0.90 ± 0.46 mg/kg) in cultivated soil exceed the background values of Guizhou Province by 1.12, 1.28, 2.36, 1.27, and 2.4 times, respectively. However, the average concentration of Cd is 0.49 ± 0.49 mg/kg, which is lower than the corresponding background value. The average Igeo values of Pb, Cd, Cr, and As in the soil samples were lower than 1, indicating a relatively low degree of enrichment, whereas the enrichment of Hg was relatively obvious, as approximately 32.9% of the samples were at moderate and above enrichment levels. The contents of HMs in samples of corn, plum, and tea were lower than the corresponding pollutant limit. The BCF values of Cd, Hg, and Se in the three crops were relatively high, indicating a strong migration ability, and the average BCF values of tea in the soil-crop system were higher than those of corn and plum. Correlation analysis showed that the soil pH and concentrations of K2O, Fe2O3, and Al2O3 were negatively correlated with the BCF of Pb, Cr, and Hg in the soil-crop system, indicating that they were affected by macro-oxidation in the soil, whereas Cd and As were basically not affected. Aim: This study systematically reviewed the application of ICP-MS and its combined technology in the determination of mineral and heavy metal elements in medicinal materials derived from plants, animals, minerals and their preparations (Chinese patent medicine), and biological products. It provides a reference for improving the quality standard of traditional medicine and exploring the effective components, toxic components, and action mechanism of traditional medicine. Materials and Methods: A total of 234 articles related to the determination of mineral and heavy metal elements in medicinal materials derived from plants, animals, and minerals and their preparations (Chinese patent medicine) were collected from PubMed, CNKI, Web of Science, VIP, and other databases. They were classified and sorted by the inductively coupled plasma-mass-spectrometry (ICP-MS) method. Results: Of the 234 articles, 154 were about medicinal materials derived from plants, 15 about medicinal materials derived from animals, 9 about medicinal materials derived from minerals, 46 about Chinese patent medicine, 10 about combined technology application, and 3 about drugs being tested after entering the body. From the 154 articles on medicinal materials derived from plants, 76 elements, including Cu, Cd, Pb, As, Cr, Mn, and Hg, were determined, of which the determination of Cu was the most, with 129 articles. Medicinal materials derived from the roots, stems, leaves, flowers, and fruits and seeds of plants accounted for 25.97%, 18.18%, 7.14%, 7.79%, and 14.94%, respectively. Moreover, medicinal materials derived from the whole plants accounted for 14.94%, and other medicinal materials derived from plants and soil accounted for 11.04%. A total of 137 of the tested medicinal materials were from traditional Chinese medicine, accounting for 88.96%, 12 were from Arabic medicine (including Unani), accounting for 7.79%, 2 were from Tibetan medicine of China, and 1 was from Mongolian medicine of China, 1 was from Miao medicine of China, and 1 was from Zhuang medicine of China. In the 15 articles on medicinal materials derived from animals, 49 elements such as Cu, As, Cd, Hg, Se, Pb, and Mn were determined, of which Cu was the most. All the tested medicinal materials belong to traditional Chinese medicine. From the nine articles on medicinal materials derived from minerals, 70 elements such as Fe, Cu, Zn, Al, As, Se, and Na were determined, of which Fe, Cu, and Zn were the most. The tested medicinal materials all belong to traditional Chinese medicine. From the 46 articles on Chinese patent medicine, 62 elements such as Cu, As, Pb, Cd, Hg, Ni, and Cr were determined, of which Cu was the most. Regarding the tested Chinese patent medicine, 38 articles belong to traditional Chinese medicine, 6 to Tibetan medicine, and 2 to Mongolian medicine of China. Three articles determine the content of metal elements in biological samples such as animal hepatic venous blood, abdominal aortic blood, brain, liver, kidney, urine, and feces, and one article determines the content of metal elements in human lung and serum. From the 10 articles combined with liquid chromatography and gas chromatography, 16 elements such as MMA, DMA, AsIII, AsV, AsB, AsC, and AsI3 were determined, of which MMA and DMA were the most. It can realize elemental morphology and isotope analysis. The tested medicinal materials and Chinese patent medicine belong to traditional Chinese medicine. Conclusion: ICP-MS was applied the most in traditional Chinese medicine, followed by Arabic medicine. ICP-MS was used to determine more medicinal materials derived from plants, and Cu was determined the most. The characteristic inorganic element spectrum of medicinal materials can also be established. ICP-MS and its combined technology are widely used in Chinese patent medicine, but the test of biological samples is the least. The information provided in this article can provide a reference for improving the quality standard of traditional medicines and exploring the active ingredients and toxic ingredients and their mechanism of action. BACKGROUND: The exploitation of minerals releases heavy metals into the surrounding soil, which can cause health hazards when biological entities are exposed to contaminated soil. Iron ore is one of the most widely distributed minerals in China, but there are few studies on the health risk of soil heavy metals in iron mines, especially in arid areas. The ecosystem of the arid area is fragile and difficult to repair once it has been polluted. OBJECTIVES: To perform environmental health risk assessment for topsoil surrounding iron deposits from Guyang County, Baotou City. METHODS: 101 topsoil samples were collected from an iron mine in Guyang County, Baotou City. Heavy metals were measured by inductively coupled plasma - mass spectrometry/ optical emission spectrometry and atomic fluorescence spectrometry, to study element characteristics. The health risk assessment method was used to evaluate and calculate the screening value. RESULTS: The results showed that the variation coefficients of copper, chromium, and nickel in the study area were higher than 0.5, and the average contents of these elements were significantly higher than that in the Hetao Plain. The high value areas of copper were mainly distributed around tailings ponds and concentrators, while the high value areas of chromium or nickel were mainly distributed in bedrock mountains. The assessment of health hazards showed that the hazard quotient of all elements was less than 1, and the order was As > Cr > Ni > Cu > Cd >Zn> Hg. The average of total hazard quotient was 0. 542. There was a sample in the bedrock mountain south of the iron mine, which had a total hazard quotient exceeding 1, and the contribution rates of chromium, nickel and arsenicwere 59%, 25%, and 15%, respectively. The carcinogenic hazard index of all elements was below 10-4. Soil screening levels of chromium, nickel and arsenic in the study area were 579mg/kg, 622mg/kg and 32. 8mg/kg base on human health. CONCLUSIONS: Chromium and nickel in the study soil are mainly affected by parent materials of soil formation, while copper is mainly affected by mineral processing activities. In general, the health hazard of heavy metals in soil is relatively low, and is greatly influenced by the parent materials of soil formation. However, it is still necessary to pay attention to the accumulation of polluted elements in the areas around tailings ponds, and to avoid oral intake of pollutants. And it is also necessary to further study the feature of soil heavy metals from different kinds of iron mines and different regions that have not been studied before, because the associated elements of iron ore in different regions or types are not the same. Drinking water is considered to be an important exposure pathway for humans to ingest trace elements; human urine samples are widely accepted as biometric substrates that can reflect human exposure to trace elements. The current study aimed at investigating the concentrations of trace elements including selenium (Se), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) in drinking water and human urine in plateau region of China, determining the association among trace elements in drinking water and urine, and analyzing their associations with age and gender. The results showed that the majority of trace element concentrations were in the range of the World Health Organization (WHO 2011) guideline values, in both urine samples of male and female, and the median values were descending in the order: Zn > Cu > As > Se > Cr > Ni > Mn > Pb > Cd > Co. Selenium contributed to the excretion of As, Cr, Cu, Cd, and Zn in human body, group of 31–40 years appeared to present the greatest excretion ability in most of the trace elements. Weak positive correlations were observed between age and Mn in female urine samples, and negative correlations were observed between age and Se, As, Co, and Cu in male urine samples and between age and Co in female urine samples, respectively. Significant positive correlation was observed in As between drinking water and the whole human urine. In the same family, female seemed to show higher proportions of urinary As levels than male. This study will provide elementary information regarding trace element levels in drinking water and human urine in residents in plateau region of China and is helpful to provide reference for dietary nutrient trace element intake and effective control for local resident. Trace elements in particles play an essential role in particle-related health and environmental effects and were recognized as primary source tracers. An understanding of the size-segregated elemental composition is critical for accurate source attribution and risk evaluation. The present study investigated the characteristics of 28 elements in the size-fractioned particles of a coastal megacity in north China. The size distribution of element concentration posed bimodal peak mode, and the proportion of most trace elements tended to increase with the decreasing particle size, especially toxic metals like Hg, Ga, Tl, As, Pb, Se, and Cd. Source attribution based on the size-segregated concentrations was conducted by positive matrix factorization. Natural sources such as crust and sea spray aerosol dominated the trace element concentration in the large particles, while anthropogenic sources such as traffic, biomass, coal combustion, and industry contributed the majority in the fine particles. The source-specific exposure risk calculation based on the size-segregated dataset showed a noncarcinogenic risk (HQ) of 6.62 for children, mainly contributed by Tl and As from biomass burning, petrochemical refining, and coal combustion. Compared with larger particles, the finer particles generated a higher HQ and carcinogenic risk, especially particles smaller than 0.49 μm. Fine particles primarily emitted from the petrochemical industry and coal combustion brought out the largest HQ, while fine particles from vehicle traffic and the petrochemical industry contributed the largest carcinogenic risk. Transport of sea spray aerosol contributed a considerable amount of the carcinogenic risk in the coastal urban area. Most groundwater geochemical studies associated with earthquakes have focused on changes in major ions and radon concentration. However, trace elements have also shown a dramatic response to earthquakes and attracted increasing attention. In this study, hydrochemical and water level changes were detected by an artesian well (DZ well) in Yunnan, China, during the 2018 Ms 5.9 Mojiang earthquake. The results show that the major and trace element concentrations changed considerably before and after the earthquake, which were attributed to the mixing of water from different aquifers due to the earthquake-induced alteration of permeability through wavelet analysis of continuous monitoring data and coseismic static strain. In addition, Self-Organizing Map (SOM) and K-means clustering algorithms were used to classify all water samples with 10 trace elements as variables, and the results showed that samples collected in pre- and post-earthquake can be categorized as two groups, showing a significant difference. We argue that the response of trace elements remains unaffected by their initial concentration levels. Notably, both high- and low-concentration trace elements (e.g., Cs, Rb, V, etc.) exhibit discernible changes in response to the Ms 5.9 Mojiang earthquake. These observations corroborate the efficacy of clustering methodologies in delineating seismic-induced concentration shifts and furnish fresh insights into the anomalous behavior of trace elements during the earthquake. This study investigated the distribution of 24 elements in rice samples cultivated in Zhejiang, southeast China and estimated the health risks to local consumers using Monte Carlo simulation. The mean concentrations of the primary toxic elements As, Cd, Cr, Hg, Ni, Mo, Pb, and Sb were 0.094, 0.076, 0.046, 0.003, 0.218, 0.671, 0.018, and 0.002 mg kg−1, respectively. Correlation analyses revealed strong positive correlations between Ca-V, Ca-Fe, Se-Cd, Se-Hg, and Sr-Mo. Target hazard quotients (THQs) were adopted for non-carcinogenic risk assessment, and the THQs at the 50th percentile were all less than one, indicating that consumers experienced no deleterious effects from the consumption of rice containing these elements. The descending order for all age groups was THQ-Cd > THQ-As > THQ-Mo > THQ-Mn > THQ-Zn > THQ-Hg > THQ-Ni > THQ-Sb. When evaluating the THQ for multiple elements, the certainties of a hazard index greater than one for children, teens and adults were 74.0%, 81.1%, and 78.0%, respectively. Sensitivity analysis revealed that the Cd concentration and ingestion rate were the two principal factors contributing to the total risk. In addition, potential carcinogenic risk was indicated. The Bainiuchang Zn-Sn polymetallic deposit, located in the southwest margin of the Yangtze Block, has substantial zinc concentrates with indium and cadmium mineralization. In this study, we examined different sphalerite grains from this deposit with elemental mapping, in-situ trace element geochemistry and S-Pb isotopic composition. The discrepancy of indium and Zn/Cd ratio suggest that there are at least two generations of sphalerite. The mineralization of indium is mainly enriched in marmatite [(Zn,Fe)S)] from cassiterite-bearing ore, rather than in that from cassiterite-poor ore. The mineralization of cadmium occurred in all types of ore. The relevance of trace elements suggests that indium can be incorporated into sphalerite by a couple substitution of (In, Ga)3+ + (Cu, Ag)+ ↔ 3(Zn, Fe)2+, whereas Fe, Cd can be incorporated into sphalerite by substitutions of Fe2+ ↔ Zn2+ and Cd2+ ↔ Fe2+. Sulfur (δ34S V-CDT =+2.43 to +3.88 ‰) and lead (206Pb/204Pb = 18.346–18.396, 207Pb/204Pb = 15.675–15.691) isotopic compositions indirectly suggest that indium and cadmium in the Bainiuchang Zn-Sn polymetallic deposit may be sourced from magmatic-hydrothermal fluids associated with Late-Cretaceous magmatic activities in this district. The Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) plays a crucial role in providing electricity for mega-cities across China. However, since the impoundment was completed in 2006, attention to environmental concerns has also been intensive. In order to determine the distribution, sources, and pollution status of trace elements in the water fluctuation zone of the TGR following ten years of repeated "submergence" and "exposure", we systematically collected 16 paired surface sediment samples (n = 32) covering the entire main body of the TGR in March 2018 (following 6 months of submergence) and September 2018 (after 6 months of exposure), and quantitatively analyzed 13 elements (e.g., Mn, Fe, V, Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Sr, Y, Zr, Ba, and Pb) using X-ray fluorescence spectrophotometry (XRF). The results showed that, except for Sr, concentrations of trace metals following submergence were generally higher than those after exposure due to the less settling of suspended solids at the faster flow velocity during the drawdown period. Assessment using enrichment factors (EFs) and a geo-accumulation index (Igeo) both characterized a relatively serious anthropogenic pollution status of metals in the upper reaches of the TGR with respect to the middle-lower reaches. Source apportionment by positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis indicated that agricultural activities (24.8 and 24.3%, respectively) and industrial emissions (24.5 and 22.9%, respectively) were the two major sources in these two periods, followed by natural sources, domestic sewage, and ore mining. Ecological risk assessment showed that metalloid arsenic (As) could be the main potential issue of risk to aquatic organisms and human health. A new source-specific risk assessment method (pRI) combined with PMF revealed that agricultural activities could be the major source of potential ecological risk and should be prioritized as the focus of metal/metalloid risk management in the TGR. Nickel is considered an essential nutrient for certain microbial, plant, and animal species, but its role in human health remains controversial. Some studies have reported the relationship between nickel and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), but the results are not consistent and the mechanism is not clear, which needs further exploration. To investigate the possible correlation between nickel and T2DM. We conducted a case-control study of 192 patients with T2DM and 189 healthy controls at a hospital in central China. Plasma concentrations of nickel and six other trace elements were measured with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Logistic regression models, restricted cubic spline models (RCS), and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) were used to evaluate the relationship between plasma nickel and T2DM and its metabolic risk factors, as well as the presence or absence of interactions between nickel and other elements. The T2DM group exhibited considerably lower plasma nickel levels than the control group (P < 0.001). Whether using a crude or adjusted model, logistic regression analysis finds a negative correlation between nickel levels and the risk of T2DM (P trend < 0.001). According to the RCS, the risk of T2DM reduces with rising nickel levels when the value is below 6.1 μ g/L; nickel has a negative linear correlation with fasting plasma glucose (FPG), an inverse U-shaped connection with superoxide dismutase (SOD), and a positive linear correlation with malondialdehyde (MDA) (all P overall < 0.05). The plasma nickel concentration was positively correlated with zinc, vanadium, and chromium (r = 0.23, 0.11, and 0.19, respectively; all P < 0.05) and negatively correlated with copper (r = − 0.11, P < 0.05). In the BKMR model, interactions of nickel with zinc on T2DM and SOD, nickel with chromium on T2DM and homeostasis model assessment of β cell (HOMA- β), and nickel with copper on FPG, homeostasis model assessment of insulin (HOMA-IR), and MDA were observed. Nickel may have a dual effect on the risk of T2DM, with a protective range of less than 6.1 μ g/L. The characteristics of trace elements were investigated to evaluate the environmental status of surface water in 40 cities of China. The concentrations of 22 elements in surface water ranged from 7.00 × 10−4 to 4.37 × 105 μg/L. The water quality can be classified as "excellent" except Songhuajiang. An obvious regional distribution characteristic was observed, with concentrations of Zn, Mn, Ni, Cu, Co, U, and Cr higher in surface water collected in the north than in the south, while the trends for Cd, Tl, and As are opposite. Notably, Tl shows significant geographical divergences, with the level of surface water collected from the south nine times higher than that from the north. The regional distribution of the mineral, industrial, or agricultural activity might be responsible for the south-to-north difference of these elements. The hazard index (HI) and total cancer risk (TCR) through oral or dermal contact with water-related heavy metals were further calculated. The average HI was 0.54 in the north and 0.29 in the south for adults, while HI for children was relatively higher. The value was 1.01 and 0.55 in the north and south, respectively. TCR in the north is 2.58 × 10−4 and mainly contributed by Cr (88.1 %), while TCR in the south is 4.48 × 10−5 and mainly contributed by As (98.4 %). PM2.5-bound metal contaminants are associated with multiple chronic diseases in human. At global level, the contamination status has not been well controlled yet. Here we report findings from a long-term air pollution surveillance in Jinan city of Shandong, China. During 2014–2022, the dynamics and trends of PM2.5-bound heavy metal contaminants were monitored in an industrial area and a downtown area. The surveillance targets included: antimony (Sb), aluminum (Al), arsenic (As), beryllium (Be), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), selenium (Se). The human exposure and health risks were calculated and we found that the health risks of most contaminants showed peak values in autumn and winter. But Al, Mn, Hg and Be were found to result in highest health risk in spring or summer in the downtown area. In the industrial area we identified 100% alarming health index >1 (ranged from 1.12 to 3.35) in autumn and winter. In winter the total non-carcinogenic HI was all above 1 (peak value 2.21). Mn and As together posed >85% non-carcinogenic risk. As and Cd were ranked as major drivers of carcinogenic risks (5.84 × 10−6 and 2.78 × 10−6). Pd and Cd both showed non-negligible environmental levels but risk assessment model for their air-exposure associated non-carcinogenic risks are not yet available. This study updates air pollution data and status for air pollution status in China. This study provides valuable 9 year long-term reference to experimental and field studies in the related fields.
