Chloroplast genomes for 3 Bidens plants endemic to China (Bidens bipinnata Linn., Bidens pilosa Linn., and Bidens alba var. radiata) have been sequenced, assembled and annotated in this study to distinguish their molecular characterization and phylogenetic relationships. The chloroplast genomes are in typical quadripartite structure with two inverted repeat regions separating a large single copy region and a small single copy region, and ranged from 151,599 to 154,478 bp in length. Similar number of SSRs and long repeats were found in Bidens, wherein mononucleotide repeats (A/T), forward and palindromic repeats were the most in abundance. Gene loss of clpP and psbD, IR expansion and contraction were detected in these Bidens plants. It seems that ndhE, ndhF, ndhG, and rpl32 from the Bidens plants were under positive selection while the majority of chloroplast genes were under purifying selection. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that 3 Bidens plants clustered together and further formed molophyletic clade with other Bidens species, indicating Bidens plants might be under radiation adaptive selection to the changing environment world-widely. Moreover, mutation hotspot analysis and in silico PCR analysis indicated that inter-genic regions of ndhD-ccsA, ndhI-ndhG, ndhF-rpl32, trnL_UAG-rpl32, ndhE-psaC, matK-rps16, rps2-atpI, cemA-petA, petN-psbM were candidate markers of molecular identification for Bidens plants. The thrust nappe played an important role in the Mesozoic tectonic evolution of the middle part of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB). However, the timing, structural style and kinematic processes of the thrust nappe remain controversial, particularly the detail of the thrust nappe in the Guaizihu region (110 km east of Ejinaq). In this study, we investigate new field mapping, seismic sections, geochronology and low‐temperature thermochronometric dating to provide constraints on the history of this thrust nappe in the Chaheilingashun area (northwestern Guaizihu region). The field mapping, seismic sections and structural analysis reveal that the autochthonous system had developed a series of strong fold structures in the upper Permian strata. The allochthonous system mainly contains Devonian monzogranite (U‐Pb age, ranges from 386.7 to 389.0 Ma) and Meso–Neoproterozoic schists (the maximum depositional age, ∼880 Ma), which were thrust upon the upper Permian strata during Middle to Late Triassic. Based on similar rocks, geochronological dating and the Yagan thrust, we suggest that the postulated root zone of this allochthon might have originated from the Huhetaoergai area (40–60 km northwest of the study area). The geochronological results reveal that the lower age limit of this thrust nappe is constrained by the Lower–Middle Triassic syntectonic sediments (tuffaceous sandstone, ∼247 Ma), which is the sedimentary response of the fold structure., The timing of the termination of this thrust nappe is defined by the cooling age (40Ar/39Ar data, 217–211 Ma) of the Devonian monzogranite and Meso–Neoproterozoic schists. Thus, we consider this thrust event in the study area to potentially have occurred in the period from 247 Ma to 211 Ma, which may represent the tectonic response to the closure of the Paleo‐Asian Ocean. Water quality and quantity should be paid more attention in regions with arid climate and thick vadose zones since the limited groundwater cannot be replenished rapidly once polluted. This study focused on the Loess Plateau of China to investigate the geochemical mechanism affecting groundwater chemistry and to calculate contribution rates of multiple sources to groundwater solutes. We employed multiple methods (diagrams, bivariate analyses, hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA), sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), water quality index (WQI), correlation analysis, and forward model) for the above purposes. We collected 64 groundwater samples in the thick loess deposits in June 2018 (flood season) and April 2019 (dry season). The average concentrations of cation were in the order of Ca2+ > Na+ > Mg2+ > K+ in the flood season, and Na+ > Ca2+ > Mg2+ > K+ in the dry season. The order of anions contents in the flood season and the dry season were HCO3- > SO42- > Cl- > NO3-. The major hydrochemical facies were Ca-HCO3 and Ca·Mg-HCO3 in the flood season and Na·Ca-HCO3·SO4 and Na-HCO3 in the dry season, respectively. Most of the groundwater (95% in the flood season and 96% in the dry season) was suitable for drinking, and the overall water quality was acceptable for irrigation. Mineral dissolution and cation exchange were important natural processes affecting groundwater chemistry. The forward model showed that the contribution of atmospheric input, anthropogenic input, evaporite dissolution, silicate weathering, and carbonate weathering to solutes in groundwater was 2.3±1.5%, 5.0±7.1%, 19.3±21.4%, 42.8±27.3%, and 30.6±27.1% in the flood season, and 9.1±6.4%, 3.4±5.2%, 20.3±15.9, 56.6±23.2%, and 10.7±15.4% in the dry season, respectively. Obviously, silicate and carbonate weathering contribute the most to groundwater chemistry in the flood season, while silicate weathering and evaporite dissolution contribute the most in the dry season. Although the overall contribution of anthropogenic inputs was insignificant, it was the dominant source of solutes for local groundwater. Patrinia monandra C. B. Clarke is traditionally used for the treatment of inflammation, typhoid fever, injuries due to falls, abdominal pain, malaria, and acute appendicitis ulcers in China and Korea. In this study, the complete chloroplast genome of P. monandra was sequenced using the Illumina HiSeq X-Ten platform. It had a circular shape and a length of 158,940 bp, with 38.51% GC content. It contained a large single-copy region of 87,641 bp, a small single-copy region of 12,807 bp, and two inverted repeat regions of 29,246 bp. In total, 128 different genes, including 83 protein-coding genes, 37 distinct tRNA genes, and eight rRNA genes, were identified. Maximum-likelihood phylogenomic analysis showed that P. monandra is closely related to Patrinia scabiosifolia and Patrinia villosa in the Valerianaceae family. There were 4535 variable sites, 157,354 conserved sites, and 3085 singleton sites in the six Patrinia chloroplast genomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hydrogeochemistry and isotope hydrology were carried out to investigate the spatial distribution of fluoride (F−) and the mechanisms responsible for its enrichment in the western region of the Ordos basin, northwestern China. Sixty-two groundwater samples from the unconfined aquifer and fifty-six from confined aquifer were collected during the pre-monsoon (June 2016). Over 77% of groundwater samples from the unconfined aquifer (F− concentration up to 13.30 mg/L) and approximately 66% from confined aquifer (with a maximum F− concentration of 3.90 mg/L) exhibit F− concentrations higher than the Chinese safe drinking limit (1.0 mg/L). High-F− groundwater presents a distinctive hydrochemical characteristic: a high pH value and HCO 3 − concentration with Ca-poor and Na-rich. Mineral dissolution (e.g., feldspar, calcite, dolomite, fluorite), cation exchange and evaporation in the aquifers predominate the formation of groundwater chemistry, which are also important for F− enrichment in groundwater. Mixing with unconfined groundwater is a significant mechanism resulting in the occurrence of high-F− groundwater in confined aquifer. These findings indicate that physicochemical processes play crucial roles in driving F− enrichment and that may be useful for studying F− occurrence in groundwater in arid and semi-arid areas. Accurately identifying the sources of trace elements in groundwater is difficult, especially in the areas with intensive human activities. This study proposes a framework to identify and quantify the contributions of potential sources of trace elements in groundwater. Health risk assessment is first conducted to identify the trace elements with the highest threats to groundwater quality, and then the geographical detector is used to qualitatively investigate the potential sources and processes dominating the pollution from identified trace elements, and the absolute principal component scores-multivariate linear regression (APCS-MLR) is used to quantify the contributions of different sources to the accumulation of trace elements. The proposed approach was applied to China's Loess Plateau, a typical water-limited area with rapid urbanization and intensive agricultural activities, after conducting two groundwater sampling campaigns in a flood and a dry season. The trace element concentrations in groundwater exhibited significant spatial and seasonal differences. Health risk assessment revealed that Cr and As through oral ingestion were responsible for non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks in different seasons. Land use was the primary factor influencing the spatial heterogeneity of Cr in the flood season, while elevation and distance from city were dominant factors in the dry season. Normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and distance from city contributed the most to As change in the flood season, but NDVI was the major contributor in the dry season. The average contributions of potential pollution sources to trace elements in groundwater were in the order of natural source (35%) > geogenic process (17%) > industrial source (13%) in the flood season, but mixed sources (47%) > agricultural activities (18%) in the dry season. Distinguished from the traditional source apportionment methods, the newly proposed approach is not limited to identification of pollutant sources, but also can obtain the exact contributions of different sources. Background: Staphylococcus aureus, particularly methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA), is an important cause of pyogenic skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs). The aim of present study is to investigate the molecular characteristic of Staphylococcus aureus isolates isolated from the pus samples from the patients with purulent skin and soft tissue infections in Wenzhou, China. Methods: Between December 2002 and June 2008, a total of 111 nonduplicate S. aureus isolates were collected from the pus samples of the patients with SSTIs in a teaching hospital in Wenzhou, China. All the tested isolates were confirmed as S. aureus using a Staph SPA agglutination kit, Gram's stain and a Vitek-60 microbiology analyzer. The homology among the tested isolates was determined by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). Multilocus sequence typing (MLST) was used to determine the sequence types (STs) of the selected isolates. The genotypes of SCCmec were determined by a multiplex PCR in the MRSA isolates. Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL) genes and mecA were also determined by another multiplex PCR. Results: Among the 111 S. aureus isolates, 48 and 63 isolates were community-acquired and hospital-acquired respectively. Sixty isolates were confirmed as MRSA harboring mecA detected by PCR. A total of 32 PFGE clonal types were obtained by PFGE, with 10 predominant patterns (types A to J). Twenty-five different STs including ST398 and three novel STs were found among 51 selected isolates. The main STs were ST239, ST1018, ST59, ST7 and ST88. Of 60 MRSA isolates, SCCmec II, III, IV and SCCmec V were found in three, 50, three and two isolates, respectively. The positive rates of PVL genes in overall isolates, HA-isolates, CA-isolates, MRSA isolates and MSSA isolates were 23.4% (26/111), 20.6% (13/63), 27.1% (13/48), 21.7% (13/60) and 25.5% (13/51), respectively. Eight (33.3%, 8/24) of 24 CA-MRSA isolates and 5 (13.9%, 5/36) of 36 HA-MRSA isolates were positive for PVL genes. ST239-MRSA-SCCmecIII and ST1018-MRSASCCmecIII clones were found to be main clones and spread between community and hospital. Conclusion: S. aureus isolates causing SSTIs showed considerable molecular heterogeneity and harbored high prevalence of PVL genes. Fluoride (F−) and nitrate (NO 3 −) in groundwater have caused serious health problems worldwide. However, in the Chinese Loess Plateau where groundwater is the primary source of drinking water, previous studies have rarely reported the health risks from fluoride and nitrate in groundwater. Therefore, we collected 105 groundwater samples (78 from shallow aquifers and 27 from deep aquifers) from the western district of the Loess Plateau for physicochemical and isotopic analysis to investigate the sources of F− and NO 3 − in groundwater and associated health risks. Fluoride concentration in 73.1% of shallow groundwater and 22.2% of deep groundwater exceeds 1.5 mg/L, while NO 3 − content in 76.3% of shallow groundwater and 51.9% of deep groundwater surpasses 50 mg/L. High-F- groundwater is associated with HCO 3 –Na, SO 4 –Na·Mg and Cl–Na·Mg types water. Fluorine-bearing minerals dissolution, cation exchange, calcite precipitation, evaporation, and anthropogenic activities contribute significantly F− in groundwater. Mixing with shallow groundwater is an important source of F− in deep groundwater. The NO 3 − content is highest in Cl type water, followed by SO 4 type and HCO 3 type water. NO 3 − mainly originates from soil organic nitrogen (SON), chemical fertilizers (CF), and manure and sewage (M&S). Nitrification is the dominant transformation process of nitrogen nutrients in groundwater. The hazard index (HI) values for shallow groundwater are 0.203–9.232 for adults, 0.253–11.522 for teenagers, 0.359–16.322 for children, and 0.507–23.043 for infants, while those for deep groundwater are 0.713–5.813 for adults, 0.890–7.254 for teenagers, 1.261–10.277 for children, and 1.780–14.508 for infants. Approximately 96.2% of shallow groundwater poses non-carcinogenic risks to infants and children, followed by 92.3% to teenagers, and 89.7% to adults. All deep groundwater poses non-carcinogenic risks to infants and children, followed by 92.6% to teenagers, and 74.1% to adults. This study is helpful to develop strategies for the integrated management of high fluoride or nitrate groundwater in arid areas. Fluoride (F−) enrichment reduces the availability of groundwater resources in the arid region, and it is thus important to investigate the hydrogeochemistry and health hazards of fluoride-enriched groundwater. Seventy-two groundwater samples (20 unconfined samples from the piedmont plain, 22 unconfined samples and 30 shallow confined samples from the alluvial plain) were collected in the Tarim Basin of China to illustrate the geochemical processes driving the F− enrichment and the incidence of dental fluorosis. The patterns of average ions contents in groundwater are Na+ > Ca2+ > Mg2+ > K+ and SO 4 2− > Cl− > HCO 3 − > NO 3 − > F−. The highest F− concentration (average 2.16 mg/L) is observed in unconfined groundwater in the alluvial plain, while the lowest (average 0.63 mg/L) is recorded in unconfined groundwater in the piedmont plain. Approximately 5.0% of unconfined groundwater in the piedmont plain, 90.9% of unconfined groundwater and 33.3% of shallow confined groundwater in the alluvial plain contain F− concentrations exceeding 1.0 mg/L (Chinese drinking water standard). Mineral dissolution, cation exchange, and evaporation play a significant role in the formation of solutes in groundwater. High-F- groundwater is mostly associated with SO 4 ·Cl–Na·Ca, SO 4 ·Cl–Na·Mg, and SO 4 ·Cl–Na types water. Thermodynamic simulations reveal that the dissolution of F-bearing minerals (e.g., fluorite) significantly controls the F− contents in groundwater. High concentrations of F− are closely related to high HCO 3 −, high Na+, high salinity, cation exchange, and evaporation. This demonstrates that high F− concentrations are caused by the increase in fluorite solubility due to high ionic strength, Ca2+ consumption and the desorption of F− from solid surfaces under alkaline conditions. Mixing with the upper unconfined groundwater plays a vital role in the enrichment of F− in shallow confined groundwater in the alluvial plain. The health risk assessment based on Dean's classification indicates that the percentage prevalence of fluorosis for boys aged 6 to 18 is 15.5% for Yecheng (YC), 18.4% for Zepu (ZP), 33.3% for Shache (SC), 29.8% for Maigaiti (MG), and 44.9% for Bachu (BC), while that for girls of the same age is 14.3% for YC, 24.3% for ZP, 42.2% for SC, 41.4% for MG, and 45.3% for BC. For male and female adults aged between 19 and 68, the percentage prevalence of fluorosis is: YC (11.5%, 12.0%), ZP (18.3%, 20.0%), SC (35.4%, 35.0%), MG (32.5%, 39.7%), and BC (42.4%, 44.3%). It is obvious that younger generation, especially girls, suffers from more severe dental fluorosis. This study has implications for the effective management of high-F- groundwater in arid regions. The optimal multimorbidity measures for predicting disability trajectories are not universally agreed upon. We developed a multimorbidity index among middle-aged and older community-dwelling Chinese adults and compare its predictive ability of disability trajectories with other multimorbidity measures. This study included 17,649 participants aged ≥50 years from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Survey 2011–2018. Two disability trajectory groups were estimated using the total disability score differences calculated between each follow-up visit and baseline. A weighted index was constructed using logistic regression models for disability trajectories based on the training set (70 %). The index and the condition count were used, along with the pattern identified by the latent class analysis to measure multimorbidity at baseline. Logistic regression models were used in the training set to examine associations between each multimorbidity measure and disability trajectories. C-statistics, integrated discrimination improvements, and net reclassification indices were applied to compare the performance of different multimorbidity measures in predicting disability trajectories in the testing set (30 %). In the newly developed multimorbidity index, the weights of the chronic conditions varied from 1.04 to 2.55. The multimorbidity index had a higher predictive performance than the condition count. The condition count performed better than the multimorbidity pattern in predicting disability trajectories. Self-reported chronic conditions. The multimorbidity index may be considered an ideal measurement in predicting disability trajectories among middle-aged and older community-dwelling Chinese adults. Hundreds of millions of people around the world are currently exposed to excessive amounts of fluoride (F-) in drinking water. Although the factors controlling the spatiotemporal distribution of F- contents have been analyzed, their contributions have rarely been quantified. In this study, 510 water samples were collected in the dry and wet seasons in China's Loess Plateau to investigate the spatial and seasonal distribution, controlling factors, and potential health risks of F- in natural water. High-F- waters were mainly distributed in valley areas of the Loess Plateau, and more severe fluoride pollution of streamwater and groundwater was found in the wet and dry seasons, respectively. Mineral dissolution, competitive adsorption, adsorption/desorption and cation exchange jointly controlled F- enrichment. Spatiotemporal distribution of high-F- levels was mainly determined by climate and streamwater-groundwater connectivity in the dry season, with contribution rates of 41.7% and 37.6%, and by terrain and anthropogenic activities in the wet season, with contribution rates and 49.9–55.6% and 30.7%, respectively. Fluoride in groundwater through oral intake posed the greatest health risks to infants, followed by children, teenagers and adults in the dry and wet seasons. [Display omitted] • Field mapping indicated the geometry of nappe structure in the northern Alxa region, NW China. • The crustal shortening of the southern CAOB was established during the Late Triassic. • Two large-scale strike-slip systems dominated the Late Triassic tectonic framework of the southern CAOB. The Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) experienced multistage intracontinental deformation during the Mesozoic and Cenozoic. Recent studies have shown that a large-scale nappe structure developed in the northern Alxa region. Here, we present new field investigations, structural analysis, and a new balanced cross-section in order to better constrain its geometries, displacement and activity time. Three nappe stacks with distinctive lithostratigraphic assemblies, structural characteristics and displacement were recognized: (1) the structural highest China-Mongolia boundary nappe preserving as klippen has a minimum displacement of ∼ 65 km; (2) the Yagan thrust sheet is dominated by an E–W-trending syncline and has a minimum displacement of ∼ 30 km; and (3) the structural lowest Gashunzhadegai thrust sheet is characterized by S-vergent folds and imbricated faults and has a minimum displacement of ∼ 14 km (30 %). The youngest strata involved in the nappe structure and the cross-cutting relationships indicated that the nappe structure formed during the Late Triassic (230–215 Ma). Regionally, it occurred later than the final closure of the Paleo-Asian Ocean and marked the beginning of the intracontinental evolution of the southern CAOB. Integrating previous structural, thermochronological and sedimentological data with our studies, we suggested that the Late Triassic tectonic framework of the middle segment of the southern CAOB was dominated by two large-scale en echelon strike-slip systems. In addition, the driving force for the Late Triassic intracontinental deformation was most likely to be the collision of the Bayan Har Terrane and Yangtz Craton with the Eurasian continent. Background: To assess the bioequivalence between Gan & Lee (GL) glargine U300 and Toujeo ® regarding pharmacokinetics (PK), pharmacodynamics (PD), and safety in Chinese healthy male participants., Methods: A single-center, randomized, double-blind, single-dose, two-preparation, two-sequence, four-cycle repeated crossover design study was performed to compare GL glargine U300 and Toujeo ® in 40 healthy participants. The primary PK endpoints were the area under the curve of glargine metabolites, M1 concentration from 0 to 24 hours (AUC 0-24h ), and the maximum glargine concentration within 24 hours post-dose (C max ). The primary PD endpoints were the area under the glucose infusion rate (GIR) curve from 0 to 24 hours (AUC GIR.0-24h ) and the maximum GIR within 24 hours post-dose (GIR max )., Results: GL Glargine U300 demonstrated comparable PK parameters (AUC 0-24h , C max , AUC 0-12h , and AUC 12-24h of M1) and PD responses [AUC GIR.0-24h , GIR max , AUC GIR.0-12h , and AUC GIR.12-24h ] to those of Toujeo ® , as indicated by 90% confidence intervals ranging from 80% to 125%. A comprehensive understanding of the role of natural and anthropogenic factors in groundwater pollution is essential for sustainable groundwater resource management, especially in alluvial plains with intensive anthropogenic activities. Numerous studies have focused on the contribution of individual factors on groundwater pollution in alluvial aquifers, but distinguishing the effects of natural and anthropogenic factors is limited. In this study, 64 wells were sampled in different seasons from the Yellow River alluvial plain in China for hydrochemical and isotopic analysis to investigate the spatiotemporal distribution, sources and health risks of fluoride and nitrate in alluvial aquifers. Results showed that fluoride contamination was widely distributed without significant seasonal variation, and 78.1 % of the dry season samples and 65.6 % of the wet season samples showed fluoride concentrations above the permissible limit (1.5 mg/L). High-F - groundwater was generally accompanied by Na-HCO 3 and Na-HCO 3 ·SO 4 water types. Fluoride was from a natural origin mainly associated with mineral dissolution, competitive adsorption, cation exchange, and evaporation. Groundwater nitrate contamination was spatially sporadic and showed significant seasonal differences. Only 13.6 % of the dry season samples and 3.2 % of the wet season samples had NO 3 - concentrations exceeded the permissible limit of 50 mg/L. The hydrochemical phase evolved from bicarbonate or sulfate type to chloride type with increasing nitrate concentration. Manure and sewage attributed to agricultural activities contributed the most nitrogen to groundwater, followed by soil organic nitrogen and chemical fertilizers, revealing the anthropogenic origin of nitrate. Nitrification was the dominant nitrogen transformation process in the wet season, and denitrification was prevalent in the dry season. Oral ingestion of high fluoride groundwater was a major threat to human health, especially for infants. Objectives: To compare the pharmacokinetic and safety of the test group capecitabine tablets (0.5 g) and the reference group capecitabine tablets (0.5 g)., Methods: This study was registered at www.chinadrugtrials.org.cn under the registration number CTR20220138. 48 subjects with solid tumor were recruited and randomized to receive either the test group or the reference group at a dose of 2 g per cycle for three cycles of the entire trial., Results: The point estimate of the geometric mean ratio of C max for the subject and reference groups was 1.0670, which was in the range of 80.00%-125.00%. And the upper limit of 95% confidence interval was -0.0450 < 0. The statistics of geometric mean ratio of AUC 0-t and AUC 0-∞ (test group/reference group) and their 90% confidence intervals were in the range of 80.00%-125.00%, thus the test group was bioequivalent to the reference group under the conditions of this postprandial test. There were no major or serious adverse events. Conclusion: The pharmacokinetic profiles of capecitabine under postprandial conditions were consistent between the two groups. The two groups were bioequivalent and had a similar favorable safety profile in Chinese patients with solid tumor.

Objectives: This study aimed to examine and compare the associations between different multimorbidity measures and mortality among older Chinese adults., Study Design and Setting: Using the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey 2002-2018, data on fourteen chronic conditions from 13,144 participants aged ≥65 years were collected. Multimorbidity measures included condition counts, multimorbidity patterns (examined by exploratory factor analysis), and multimorbidity trajectories (examined by a group-based trajectory model). Mortality risk associated with different multimorbidity measures was each analyzed using Cox regression. C-statistic, the Integrated Discrimination Improvement (IDI), and the Net Reclassification Index (NRI) were used to compare the performance of different multimorbidity measures., Results: Participants with multimorbidity, regardless of measurements, had a higher risk of death compared with people without multimorbidity. Compared with the mortality prediction model using age and sex, C-statistics showed added discrimination (over 0.77, all P < .05) for models with multimorbidity measures. Multimorbidity trajectory showed integrated discrimination and net reclassification improvement for mortality prediction compared to condition count (IDI = 0.042, NRI = 0.033) and multimorbidity pattern (IDI = 0.041, NRI = 0.069)., Conclusion: Adding multimorbidity measures significantly improved the performance of a mortality prediction model using age and sex as predictors. Background: Cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs) are associated with depression. However, it is unclear whether coexisting CMDs may increase the risk of depression. We examined associations between cardiometabolic multimorbidity and depressive symptoms among middle-aged and older Chinese., Methods: Participants aged ≥45 years were enrolled from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study 2011-2018 (N = 18,002). Cardiometabolic multimorbidity was defined as the coexistence of ≥2 CMDs, including stroke, heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. Depressive symptoms were assessed by the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale. We used generalized estimating equation models to examine associations between cardiometabolic multimorbidity and depressive symptoms, including the dose effect of disease count and prevalent disease combinations, as well as individual and additive effects of specific CMDs., Results: The prevalence of cardiometabolic multimorbidity was 24.5%. A higher number of CMDs had an additive dose effect on depressive symptoms that persisted consistently in specific CMDs. Stroke only, heart disease only, and diabetes only were each associated with a higher risk of depressive symptoms compared with no CMDs. CMD combinations involving stroke, heart disease, or diabetes were each associated with an increased risk of depressive symptoms compared with the absence of stroke, heart disease, or diabetes., Limitation: Self-reported chronic conditions., Conclusion: Stroke, heart disease, and diabetes showed individual and additive effects on CMD combinations, whereas hypertension and dyslipidemia only showed associations with depressive symptoms in combinations with other CMDs. Objectives: Depressive symptoms are commonly seen among patients with multiple chronic somatic conditions, or somatic multimorbidity (SMM); however, little is known about the relationships between depressive symptoms and different SMM combinations. Our study aimed to delineate the patterns of SMM and their longitudinal associations with depressive symptoms among a nationally representative sample of middle-aged and older Chinese adults., Design: We employed a longitudinal design., Setting and Participants: Older adults (N = 10,084) aged ≥45 years from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study 2011-2015 participated (mean age = 57.7 years at baseline; 53.3% men)., Methods: Sixteen chronic somatic conditions were ascertained at baseline via questionnaires. Depression was assessed with the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale at baseline and during follow-up. Patterns of SMM were identified via exploratory factor analyses. Generalized estimating equations were used to evaluate the longitudinal associations between patterns of SMM and the presence of depressive symptoms at follow-up., Results: Compared with participants with no somatic condition, those with 1, 2, and 3 or more somatic conditions had a 21%, 66%, and 111% greater risk, respectively, for the presence of depressive symptoms. Increased factor scores for 4 patterns identified, cardio-metabolic pattern [adjusted odds ratio (AOR) 1.12, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.06, 1.20], respiratory pattern (AOR 1.25, 95% CI 1.17, 1.33), arthritic-digestive-visual pattern (AOR 1.29, 95% CI 1.22, 1.37), and hepatic-renal-skeletal pattern (AOR 1.09, 95% CI 1.02, 1.16), were all associated with a higher risk of having depressive symptoms., Conclusions and Implications: All SMM patterns were independently associated with depression among middle-aged and older Chinese adults, with greater odds for people with comorbid arthritic-digestive-visual conditions and respiratory conditions. The rapid development of urbanization and agriculture poses serious impacts on groundwater in arid and semi-arid areas, which typically have high groundwater depletion rates. In this study, chemical and isotopic analyses combined with different data interpretation methods (diagrams, bivariate analyses, principal component analysis (PCA), and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA)) were used to identify the major factors controlling groundwater chemistry in an arid and semi-arid region of North China. Sixty-four groundwater samples (35 from unconfined aquifer, 29 from confined aquifer) were collected in Baotou City, North China, and 17 chemical variables were detected for each sample. The complex hydrochemical types in unconfined groundwater (e.g., HCO 3 -Ca·Mg, HCO 3 ·Cl-Na·Mg, SO 4 -Na·Mg, and Cl·SO 4 -Na types) may be related to anthropogenic activities, while the main hydrochemical types in confined groundwater are HCO 3 -Ca·Mg, HCO 3 -Na·Mg, HCO 3 ·Cl-Na·Ca, SO 4 ·HCO 3 -Na·Mg, and Cl·SO 4 -Na types. Three component models for unconfined and confined groundwater were revealed using PCA, which explained approximately 79.69% and 80.68% of the data variance, respectively, providing a deeper insight into groundwater composition controlled by geochemistry and anthropogenic activities. Three clusters were yielded from HCA. The factors and identified clusters were verified with hydrochemical investigations. Among the natural factors, the main hydrochemical processes involve the dissolution of various minerals (halite, gypsum, feldspar, fluorite, mirabilite, biotite, dolomite, and calcite), cation exchange, evaporation, and mixing. The anthropogenic factors include domestic sewage intrusion and agricultural activities, which are most likely to lead to further declines in groundwater quality. These findings may be useful for improving groundwater resource management for sustainable development in arid and semi-arid areas.

Southern Chinese Medicine (SCM) is an important sect of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) with its own special cultural style. Species identification is essential for TCM quality control because authentic herbs are possibly substituted with adulterants that would threaten the health of the public or even cause death. Here, we provided the first local reference DNA barcode library based on the second internal transcribed spacer (ITS2) for the molecular identification of SCM. A total of 1512 specimens of southern herbs representing 359 species were collected under the instructions and identification of taxonomic experts. Genomic DNA was extracted, and the PCR reaction proceeded according to standard procedures. After Sanger sequencing, sequence assembling and annotation, a reliable ITS2 barcode library with 1276 sequences from 309 species of Southern herbs was constructed. The PCR efficiency of the whole samples was 84.39%. Characteristics of the ITS2 barcode were analyzed, including sequence lengths and GC contents in different taxa. Neighbor-joining trees based on Kimura 2-Parameter (K2P) genetic distances showed a 67.56% successful rate of species identification with ITS2 barcode. In addition, 96.57% of species could be successfully identified at the genus level by the BLAST method. Eleven plant species were discovered to be cryptic. In addition, we found that there is an incorrect sequence existing in the public database, making a reliable local DNA barcode reference more meaningful. ITS2 barcodes exhibit advantages in TCM identification. This DNA barcode reference library could be used in Southern Chinese Medicine quality control, thus contributing to protecting public health., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

Brown ducks carrying DHBV were widely used as hepatitis B animal model in the research of the activity and toxicity of anti-HBV dugs. Studies showed that the ratio of DHBV carriers in the brown ducks in Guilin region was relatively high. Nevertheless, the characters of the DHBV genome of Guilin brown duck remain unknown. Here we report the cloning of the genome of Guilin brown duck DHBV and the sequence analysis of the genome. The full length of the DHBV genome of Guilin brown duck was 3 027bp. Analysis using ORF finder found that there was an ORF for an unknown peptide other than S-ORF, PORF and C-ORF in the genome of the DHBV. Vector NTI 8. 0 analysis revealed that the unknown peptide contained a motif which binded to HLA * 0201. Aligning with the DHBV sequences from different countries and regions indicated that there were no obvious differences of regional distribution among the sequences. A fluorescence quantitative PCR for detecting DHBV was establishment based on the recombinant plasmid pGEM-DHBV-S constructed. This study laid the groundwork for using Guilin brown duck as a hepatitis B animal model.

Objective: To validate the difference on the prevalence of rheumatic symptoms between north and south parts of the country and to study the associated risk factors of rheumatic complaints in Shantou city, China., Methods: A total number of 10 638 people at above 16 years of age from four samples, were surveyed in 1987, 1992, 1995, and 1999. Protocol of International League Against Rheumatism (ILAR)-China collaborative study or WHO-ILAR community oriented program for control of rheumatic disease(COPCORD) core questionnaire was implemented. Data on related rheumatic symptoms were collected and analyzed., Results: The prevalence rate of rheumatic complaints had been increasing in Shantou area during the last decade (in 1987 11.6%, 1992 12.5%, 1995 16.0% and 1999 19.8%) but still lower than that seen in Beijing, China in 1987(40.0%). Rheumatic symptoms were more prevalent in females than in males, in elderly than in young people with most frequently involved site happened in low back area, followed by knee and neck. Lumbar pain was more frequent among rural residents, while neck pain was more prevalent in urban school students. Prevalence of knee pain was significantly higher in people living in multi-storey buildings without elevator than those living in single-storey houses. The peak values of Bone Mineral Density in Shantou population were (0.839 +/- 0.085) g/cm2 in men, and (0.723 +/- 0.064) g/cm2 in women, significantly higher than that reported in 13 other provinces and cities including Beijing. The sense of seeking for medical help was higher in population with higher prevalence of rheumatic symptoms than that in lower complaints group. However, no significant difference was found in the rates of disability among the different populations., Conclusion: The prevalence rate of rheumatic complaints was lower in Shantou than that in Beijing. Socio-economic status, environment, sex, age, occupation, ergonomics, bone mineral density, and awareness of seeking medical care might have been the associated risk factors to the prevalence of rheumatic complaints.
