In coastal cities, a large amount of cold energy is released into the nearby seawater during the process of regasification of liquefied natural gas (LNG) at the receiving terminal, and meanwhile, a large amount of exported and/or imported foods need to be frozen by bulk cold energy near the sea. In this paper, a new multistage cold energy recovery/utilization system is investigated to link the LNG cold energy directly to supply the coastal cold store. This design uses a realistic case in Ningbo LNG receiving station in China, and for the very first time considers how to utilize the LNG cold energy in an efficient manner regarding the technical, economic, and environmental benefits. A three‐stage LNG cold energy utilization system is designed and evaluated by considering different temperatures, pressures, and heat exchange parameters. Compared to conventional electric‐driven cold stores, the proposed multistage cold energy recovery/utilization system has a much cheaper capital cost during the initial investment stage, and also avoids the utility power consumption during the daily operation period. In the case study, from Ningbo LNG receiving station to a 10 MW class cold store, the proposed multienergy system can save the energy of 20.05 kilotons of standard coal, and the carbon emission reduction is up to 1.49 × 108 kg per year. The main purpose of this article is to link the environment, economy, electricity, and society and put forward a new point of view. The current research mainly explores the relationship between the environment, economy, and society and lacks a discussion on electricity. Using a new research framework, this article examines the relationship between energy intensity, energy consumption structure, population density, urbanization rate, and carbon intensity based on relevant data from 2000 to 2017 in China. In the empirical research, according to the cluster analysis, China's 30 provinces are divided into three regions according to the electrification rate standard. The cross-sectional dependence test method is used to verify the cross-sectional dependence of the data, and the second-generation panel unit root test method is used. Exploring the relationship between the variables, this article finally uses the convergence analysis method to explore the degree of influence of each variable on the carbon intensity. The empirical results show that there are both short-term effects and long-term relationships in various regions, and the influencing factors of each region are different. It further shows that the carbon intensity of the four panels shows convergence, β absolute convergence, and β conditional convergence, but the main influencing factors in different regions are different. Finally, based on the results of empirical research, policy recommendations for reducing carbon intensity in different regions are put forward. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Coastal regions have abundant off-shore wind energy resources, and surrounding areas have large-scale liquefied natural gas (LNG) receiving stations. From the engineering perspectives, there are limitations in unstable off-shore wind energy and fluctuating LNG loads. This article offers a new energy scheme to combine these 2 energy units, which uses surplus wind energy to produce hydrogen, and use LNG cold energy to liquefy and store hydrogen. In addition, in order to improve the efficiency of utilizing LNG cold energy, and reduce electricity consumption for liquid hydrogen (LH 2) production at coastal regions, this article introduces the liquid air energy storage (LAES) technology as the intermediate stage, which can stably store the cold energy from LNG gasification. A new scheme for LNG-LAES-LH 2 hybrid LH 2 production is built. The case study is based on a real LNG receiving station at Hainan province, China, and this article presents the design of hydrogen production/liquefaction process, and carries out the optimizations at key nodes, and proves the feasibility using specific energy consumption and exergy analysis. In a 100 MW system, the liquid air storage round-trip efficiency is 71.0% and the specific energy consumption is 0.189 kWh/kg, and the liquid hydrogen specific energy consumption is 7.87 kWh/kg and the exergy efficiency is 46.44%. Meanwhile, the corresponding techno-economic model is built, and for a LNG-LAES-LH 2 system with LH 2 daily production 140.4 tons, the shortest dynamic payback period is 9.56 years. Overall, this novel hybrid energy scheme can produce green hydrogen using a more efficient and economical method, and also can make full use of surplus off-shore wind energy and coastal LNG cold energy. With the gradual maturity of wind power technology, China's wind power generation has grown rapidly over the recent years. However, due to the on-site inconsumable electricity, the phenomenon of large-scale "wind curtailment" occurs in some areas. In this paper, a novel hybrid hydrogen/electricity refueling station is built near a wind farm, and a part of the surplus wind power is used to charge electric trucks, and the other part of the surplus power is used to produce "green hydrogen". According to real-time load changes, different amounts of liquid hydrogen and gas hydrogen can be properly coordinated to provide timely energy supply for hydrogen trucks. For a 400 MW wind farm in the western Inner Mongolia, China, the feasibility of the proposed system has been carried out based on the sensitivity and reliability analysis, the static and dynamic economic modeling, with an entire life cycle analysis. Compared to the conventional technology, the initial investment of the proposed scheme (700.07 M$) decreases by 13.97%, and the dynamic payback period (10.93 years) decreases by 25.87%. Shale gas (SG) is a type of clean energy fuel that has plentiful reserves in the Earth. Therefore, the question of how to exploit and efficiently transmit SG from gas reservoirs to high-density urban areas has become an important issue. This article presents a novel solution for the hybrid energy transmission of liquefied shale gas (LSG) and electricity using cryogenic and superconducting technologies, which can realize long-distance and high-efficiency multi-energy transmission. Three technical schemes are originally designed based on the real physical behaviors of the materials, electromagnetics and thermodynamics, with state-of-the-art fabrication technology and advanced commercial equipment and facilities. Furthermore, a detailed economic analysis regarding the static and dynamic payback periods is performed for all three schemes. A realistic study is carried out for the future hybrid energy transmission in Sichuan Province (the province in China with the richest SG storage). For a hybrid energy transmission case (5 GW fuel gas + 1 GW electricity), the annual energy capacities reach 8.76 TWh electricity and 2,759.4 Mtone LSG, and the static and dynamic payback periods are about 9.96 years and 14.46 years. Overall, both the technical and economic investigations confirm the advantages of the proposed long-distance hybrid LSG + electricity transmission concept, and offer multi-disciplinary design guidance of the hybrid energy pipeline and comprehensive methods on economic evaluation for future hybrid energy transmission.
