Our objective was to investigate the status and influence of myopia among primary school students in Fushun, Liaoning Province, China. We aimed to provide a theoretical and epistemological basis for implementing myopia prevention initiatives. We employed cluster sampling and surveyed 5216 primary school students from grades 1–6 across eight primary schools in Fushun City. Our participants included 2606 males and 2610 females whose average age was 9.25 (SD = 1.76) years. The rate of myopia among these primary school students was 29.54%, with statistically significant differences among students of different genders and grades. Logistic regression analysis further identified several possible protective factors, including appropriate reading distance, adequate home lighting, regular breaks between classes, conscientious eye exercises, and daily outdoor physical activity. Conversely, the associated risk factors were being female, being in a higher grade level, spending more than 4 hours on homework, occasionally reading while lying down, and having one or both parents with myopia. Overall, our results indicated a high incidence of myopia, highlighting the need for scientifically controlled interventions to manage and mitigate the occurrence and progression of myopia in this population. Background. Preoperative eye-covering training for 3 hours has been reported to effectively reduce the incidence of emergence delirium (ED) in preschool children. However, most children can only maintain the eye being covered for less than 60 min, and shortening eye-covering duration can also achieve similar clinical effects as long duration of eye-covering. This study was designed to compare the effects of 30-min and 60-min eye-covering pretreatment based on cartoon education only on preoperative anxiety, postoperative ED, and pain score after ophthalmic surgery with general anesthesia in preschool-aged children. Methods. Preschool-aged children (3–7 years) who were diagnosed with cataract, blepharoptosis, trichiasis, strabismus, eyelid tumor, and underwent ophthalmic surgery with general anesthesia from August 2021 to January 2022 were recruited. A total of 228 patients were randomly assigned at a 1 : 1:1 ratio to receive 30-min eye covering (30-min group), 60-min eye covering (60-min group) pretreatment, or programmed education only (C group). The preoperative anxiety, postoperative emergence delirium, and pain were compared between the groups. Results. The preoperative anxiety score, postoperative ED score, and incidence of ED in the 30-min group (n = 76) and 60-min group (n = 72) were significantly lower than those in the C group (n = 76), demonstrating a significant between-group difference (P < 0.001). However, the 30-min group and 60-min group had no significant difference in the abovementioned outcome measures (P > 0.05). Moreover, no significant difference was found in postoperative pain scores among the three groups (H = 0.274, P = 0.872). Conclusion. Both 30-min and 60-min eye-covering pretreatments significantly reduce preoperative anxiety and postoperative ED after ophthalmic surgery with general anesthesia in preschool-aged children. The effects of the two groups show no intergroup difference, but the 30-min eye-covering pretreatment may be more convenient for practicing. Trial Registration. Background: Clostridioides difficile usually causes intestinal infections. However, a 75-year-old lady had a periprosthetic joint infection due to this microorganism. We report a C. difficile infection of a prosthetic hip joint. Such an infection is rarely reported around the world.Case Presentation: The elder female patient presented with a 2-year history of right hip pain with movement restriction. Her right leg was shorter than another. The skin around the right hip joint was red and swollen without sinus. Her lab test result showed elevator ESR and CRP. Her X-ray film showed a massive bone defect. The patient had a total hip arthroplasty 16 years ago and had a revision 5 years ago. During this hospitalization, her cultures of the synovial fluid and tissue repeatedly grew C. difficile. She improved following two-stage revision surgery and antibiotic treatment. The patient has no recurrence of infection after a one-year follow-up.Conclusion: A rapid and accurate sample collection is significant for culture results, making an outstanding contribution to the successful treatment. The National Parasitic Resource Center (NPRC) was created in 2004. It is a first-level platform under the Basic Condition Platform Center of the Ministry of Science and Technology of China. The resource centre involves 21 depository institutions in 15 regions of the country, including human parasite and vector depository, animal parasite depository, plant nematode characteristic specimen library, medical insect characteristic specimen library, trematode model specimen library, parasite-vector/snail model specimen library, etc. After nearly 15 years of operation, the resource centre has been built into a physical library with a database of 11 phyla, 23 classes, 1115 species and 117,814 pieces of parasitic germplasm resources, and three live collection bases of parasitic germplasm resources. A variety of new parasite-related immunological and molecular biological detection and identification technologies produced by the resource centre are widely used in the fields of public health responses, risk assessments on food safety, and animal or plant quarantine. Background: Abernethy malformation is a rare congenital abnormality. Imaging examination is an important method for the diagnosis. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate manifestations of multi-slice computed tomography (MSCT) in Abernethy malformation and its diagnostic accuracy. Methods: Fourteen children with Abernethy malformation were admitted to our center in China between July 2011 and January 2018. All 14 patients (eight males and six females) received MSCT and digital subtraction angiography (DSA) while eight patients also received ultrasound. The patients' age ranged from 1 to 14 (median age 8 years old). The clinical records of the patients were retrospectively reviewed. MSCT raw data were transferred to an Advantage Windows 4.2 or 4.6 workstation (General Electric Medical Systems, Waukesha, WI). We compared the findings of MSCT with DSA and surgical results in order to ascertain diagnostic accuracy. Results: Three cases had type Ib Abernethy malformation and eleven cases had type II. Two cases of type II Abernethy malformation were misdiagnosed as type Ib using MSCT. Comparing the findings of MSCT with DSA and surgical results, the accuracy of MSCT was 85.7% (12/14), in which 100.0% (3/3) were type Ib and 81.8% (9/11) were type II. Clinical information included congenital heart disease, pulmonary hypertension, diffuse pulmonary arteriovenous fistula, abnormal liver function, hepatic nodules, elevated blood ammonia, and hepatic encephalopathy. Eleven cases were treated after diagnosis. One patient with Abernethy malformation type Ib (1/3) underwent liver transplantation. Seven patients with Abernethy malformation type II (7/11) were treated by shunt occlusion, received laparoscopy, or were treated with open surgical ligation. Another three patients (3/11) with Abernethy malformation type II were treated by interventional portocaval shunt occlusion under DSA. Conclusion: MSCT attains excellent capability in diagnosing type II Abernethy malformation and further shows the location of the portocaval shunt. Guizhou Karst Plateau is located at the center of the karst region in Asia, where landslides are a typical disaster. Affected by the local karst environment, the landslides in this region have their own characteristics. In this study, 3975 landslide records from inventories of the Guizhou karst plateau are studied. The geographical detector method is used to detect the dominant casual factor and predominant multi-factor combinations for the local landslides. The results show that landslides are prone to areas on slopes between 10° and 35°, of clay rock, in close proximity to gullies, and especially in areas of moderate vegetation, dryland, and mild rocky desertification. Continuous precipitation over 10 days has a great effect on landslide occurrence. Compared with the individual factors, the impact of two-factor interaction has greater explanatory power for landslide volume. The volume of earthquake-induced landslides is predominantly controlled by the interactions of faults and slopes, while that of human-induced landslides is affected by the interactions of land cover and hydrological conditions. For rainfall-induced landslides, the dominant interactions vary in different regions. In the central karst basin, the interactions between faults and precipitation can explain over 90% of the variations in landslide volumes. In the southern hilly karst region, the interactions between lithology and slope can explain over 71% of the variations in landslide volume and those between fault and land-use can explain 50% of the variations of the landslide volumes in the northeastern mountainous karst region. Aims: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) mainly results from autosomal-dominant inherited single heterozygous mutations in cardiac sarcomere genes. Contributions of multiple gene mutations to disease heterogeneity in a three-generation family were investigated.Methods: Clinical, electrocardiographic (ECG), and echocardiographic examination in members of a three-generation Chinese family was followed by exon and boarding intron analysis of 96 genes in the proband using second-generation sequencing. The identified mutations were confirmed by bi-directional Sanger sequencing in all family members and 300 healthy controls.Results: Four missense mutations were detected in the family. These were two novel MYH7-H1717Q and MYLK2-K324E mutations accompanied by the KCNQ1-R190W and TMEM70-I147T mutations. The proband carried all four mutations and showed overlapping HCM and LQT1 phenotypes. Five family members each carried two mutations. Subject II-2 only carried TMEM70-I147T. MYH7-H1717Q and TMEM70-I147T came from the paternal side, whereas KCNQ1-R190W and MYLK2-K324E came from the maternal side. Left ventricle mass indices in MYH7-H1717Q carriers were significantly higher than in non-H1717Q carriers (90.05 ± 7.33 g/m(2), 63.20 ± 4.53 g/m(2), respectively, P < 0.01). Four KCNQ1-R190W carriers showed QTc intervals that were significantly more prolonged than those in non-R190W carriers (472.25 ± 16.18 and 408.50 ± 7.66 ms, respectively, P < 0.05). All MYLK2-K324E carriers showed inverted ECG T waves. The subject with only a TMEM70-I147T mutation showed normal ECG and echocardiographs, suggesting that this had less pathological effects at least in this family.Conclusions: We demonstrate dual LQT1 and HCM phenotypes in this multiple LQT1- and HCM-related gene mutation carrier family for the first time and suggest that LQT-related gene mutations associate with QT interval prolongation and/or arrhythmia in HCM patients. Background: Yersinia pestis is the pathogen of the plague and caused three pandemics worldwide. Pneumonic plague is rarer than bubonic and septicemic plague. We report detailed clinical and pathogenic data for all the three sporadic cases of pneumonic plagues in China in 2014.Case Presentation: All the three patients are herders in Gansu province of China. They were all infected by Yersinia pestis and displayed in the form of pneumonic plague respectively without related. We tested patient specimens from the upper (nasopharyngeal swabs) or the lower (sputum) respiratory tract and whole blood, plasma, and serum specimens for Yersinia pestis. All patients had fever, cough and dyspnea, and for patient 2 and 3, unconscious. Respiratory symptoms were predominant with acute respiratory failure. The chest X-ray showed signs consistent with necrotizing inflammation with multiple lobar involvements. Despite emergency treatment, all patients died of refractory multiple organ failure within 24 h after admission to hospital. All the contacts were quarantined immediately and there were no secondary cases.Conclusions: Nowadays, the plague is epidemic in animals and can infect people who contact with the infected animals which may cause an epidemic in human. We think dogs maybe an intermediate vector for plague and as a source of risk for humans who are exposed to pet animals or who work professionally with canines. If a patient has been exposed to a risk factor and has fever and dyspnea, plague should be considered. People who had contact with a confirmed case should be isolated and investigated for F1 antigen analysis and receive post-exposure preventive treatment. A vaccination strategy might be useful for individuals who are occupationally exposed in areas where endemically infected reservoirs of plague-infected small mammals co-exist. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Microbial community responses to alternative management may be indicative of soil quality change. In this study, soils were collected from research plots over one year. The rhizosphere soils were studied by measuring microbial abundance (bacteria, fungi, actinomycetes, and ammonifiers), enzyme activities (invertase, catalase, urease, and phosphatase), and their relationship. Rhizosphere microbial abundance of different plant species varied greatly across seasons. The rhizosphere environment generated by Phragmites australis and Echinochloa crus-galli is suitable for microbial growth. In addition, the significant differences in rhizosphere enzyme activities of different plant species across seasons were also observed. There was a significant linear correlation between rhizosphere soil enzyme activities and microbial abundances except for between bacteria and catalase and between fungi and urease, but no such significant relationship was found between all rhizosphere soil microbial abundance and phosphatase except between fungi and acid phosphatase. We concluded that different plant species in coastal areas have different rhizosphere soils, due to the impact of the different root exudates and plant residues of the microbial properties. Abstract: The importance of a better understanding of the growth response of forest to climate change for managing and conserving forest has been realized. In this study, we developed the ring-width chronologies of Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis), one of the main constructive species of Changbai Mountain in northeastern China, to examine the radial growth–climate relationships. The stability of these relationships before and after abrupt climate change was evaluated. We built regression equations to project the future growth of the species under future climate change scenarios projected by the Providing Regional Climates for Impacts Studies (PRECISs) climate model. The results were as follows: (1) The chronologies in the three elevation gradients, HY1 at 740m.s.l., FA at 940m.s.l. and HY2 at 1258m.s.l., had the good spatial similarity with high Gleichläfigkeit (GLK) indices; however, significant differences still existed between the growth–climate relationships of the three sites. The width chronology of Korean pine at site HY1 was positively correlated with the precipitation in September of the previous year (p <0.01) and June of the current year (p <0.05). The chronology at site FA was positively correlated with the temperature in March and April of the current year (p <0.05). Whereas the current July temperature and the previous September precipitation were the main limiting factors for the growth of Korean pine at site HY2. (2) Mann–Kendall test results revealed that the climatic data from the meteorological stations near the sampling sites had an abrupt annual average temperature change in 1989, but the radial growth–climate relationship change only occurred in the chronology with May precipitation at site HY2, which may be caused by water stress. (3) With the projected increasing temperature and decreasing precipitation, compared with the base-line period (1971–2000), the radial growth of Korean pine at HY1 will relatively decrease, and the reduction will gradually increase. In contrast, at the higher elevation, like the FA and HY2 sites, the radial growth of Korean pine will relatively increase. Thus, the higher elevation areas of the Korean pine’s vertical distribution belt are more favorable for this species’ radial growth and forestation. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Located in Liaoning Province, one of the traditional heavy industrial areas in China, Dahuofang Reservoir provides drinking water for nearly 30 000 000 citizens, as well as industrial and agricultural water for dozens of several cities and rural areas. The distribution of hazardous heavy metals is described in several types of soil, crops, and in different industrial or mining areas and main sewage irrigation areas. Five possible reasons that may cause the pollution are analyzed and listed. Also we provide some pragmatic suggestions for the remediation of heavy metals in contaminated soils. The soil aggregate stability is a key property of soil quality and reflects soil quality and anti-erosion ability. The transition matrix between initial and final aggregates condition was established by modifying Niewczas and Witkowska-Walczak's method by not considering the artificial weights and each size of aggregates fraction on the basis of three reasonable assumptions, and soil aggregate stability index (ASI) was formed through preserving each size of aggregates probability. This ASI is identical to the result by reference, and the transition matrix can be showed to evaluate the soil aggregates stability. Using the transition matrix was furthermore to analyze anti-breaking ability of different size aggregate by reference material. We found there were different effects for each size aggregate by four methods, simulation rainfall, one cycle of wetting-drying, ten cycles of wetting-drying, and Yoder wetting-sieving. The Yoder wetting-sieving is a severe method that destructed soil aggregates. The ASI by modifying transition matrix method was used to evaluate the aggregates stability under different land utilization in Karst region in Chongqing, China. The ASI of agricultural utilization was lower than abounded cultivated land, shrub-grass land, secondary forest land, and primeval forest land. For some selected soil properties, when SOM content was <60 g/kg, ASI increased along with the SOM increase. Once the SOM content was >60 g/kg, the ASI was almost unchanged. The sorption moisture content of air-drying acutely affected ASI too, and the ASI increased along the sorption moisture increasing. SOM content and sorption markedly affected the preserving probability of larger aggregates such as 10-5, 5-3, 3-2, 2-1, and 1-0.5 mm size class. Although CaCO3 and clay content did not influence preserving probability of each size class of aggregates fiercely, but the influence on small aggregates was higher than that of larger aggregates. The modified transition matrix method could not only calculate soil aggregates stability index, but also analyze more parameters of aggregate experiment, and bring out the each size aggregates characteristics. In the semi-arid region of the Loess Plateau in China, a portable photosynthesis system (Li-6400) and a portable steady porometer (Li-1600) were used to study the quantitative relation between the soil water content (SWC) and trees' physiological parameters including net photosynthesis rate ( Pn), carboxylation efficiency (CE), transpiration rate ( Tr), water use efficiency of leaf (WUEL), stomatic conductivity ( Gs), stomatal resistance ( Rs), intercellular CO2 ( Ci), and stomatal limitation ( Ls). These are criteria for grading and evaluating soil water productivity and availability in forests of Black Locust ( Robinia pseudoacacia) and Oriental Arborvitae ( Platycladus orientalis). The results indicated: To the photosynthesis of Locust and Arborvitae, the SWC of less than 4.5 and 4.0% (relative water content (RWC) 21.5 and 19.0%) belong to 'non-productivity and non-efficiency water'; the SWC of 4.5-10.0% (RWC 21.5-47.5%) and 4.0-8.5% (RWC 19.0-40.5%) belong to 'low productivity and low efficiency water'; the SWC of 10.0-13.5% (RWC 47.5-64.0%) and 8.5-11.0% (RWC 40.5-52.0%) belong to 'middle productivity and high efficiency water'; the SWC of 13.5-17.0% (RWC 64.0-81.0%) and 11.0-16.0% (RWC 52.0-76.0%) belong to 'high productivity and middle efficiency water'; the SWC of 17.0-19.0% (RWC 81.0-90.5%) and 16.0-19.0% (RWC 76.0-90.5%) belong to 'middle productivity and low efficiency water'; the SWC of more than 19.0% (RWC 90.5%) belongs to 'low productivity and low efficiency water'. The SWC of about 13.5 and 11.0% (RWC 64.0 and 52.0%) are called 'high productivity and high efficiency water', which provides the further evidence for Locust and Arborvitae to get both higher productivity ( Pn and CE) and the highest WUEL and adaptation to the local environment, respectively. Community structure and leaf traits are important elements of terrestrial ecosystems. Changes of community structure and leaf traits are of particular use in the study of the influence of climate change on terrestrial ecosystems. Patterns of community structure (including species richness, above- and below-ground biomass) and leaf traits (including leaf mass per area (LMA), nitrogen content both on mass and area bases ( N and N), and foliar δC) from 19 grassland plots along an altitudinal transect at Hongchiba in Chongqing, China, were analyzed. Species richness along the altitudinal transect had a hump-shaped pattern. Above-ground biomass had a quadratic decrease along the altitudinal gradient whereas below-ground biomass had the opposite pattern. Change of above-ground biomass of various taxonomic groups with altitude was also studied. Poaceae showed strong negative relationships and Asteraceae showed a hump-shaped relationship with increase of altitude. Five common species of the grassland, Trifolium pratense, Geranium wilfordii, Aster tataricus, Leontopodium leontopodioides, and Spiraea prunifolia, were particularly studied for variation of leaf traits along the altitudinal gradient. Averaged for all species, LMA, N and foliar δC had positive correlations with altitude. N did not change significantly as altitude increased. LMA and N showed significant positive relationships with foliar δC. The adaptive features of leaf traits among different species were not consistent. The study highlights specific adaptation patterns in relation to altitude for different plant species, provides further insights into adaptive trends of community structure and leaf traits in a specific ecological region filling a gap in the definition of global patterns, and adds to the understanding of how adaptive patterns of plants may respond to global climate change. Background: Appropriate diagnostics to monitor disease trends and assess the effectiveness and impact of interventions are essential for guiding treatment strategies at different thresholds of schistosomiasis transmission and for certifying elimination. Field validation of these assays is urgently needed before they can be adopted to support policy decisions of the national programme for control and elimination of schistosomiasis in P.R. China. We compared the efficacy and utility of different immunoassays in guiding control strategies and monitoring the endemic status of S. japonicum infections towards elimination. Methodology/Principal Findings: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in seven villages with different transmission intensities settings to assess the performance and utility of three immunoassays, e.g., an indirect hemagglutination assay (IHA_JX), an enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA_SZ), and a dot immunogold filtration assay (DIGFA_SH). 6,248 individuals aged 6-65 years old who gave consent and supplied their stool and blood samples were included for data analysis. Results showed that ELISA_SZ performed significantly higher sensitivity (95.45%, 95%CI: 92.94-97.97%) than IHA_JX (87.59%, 95%CI: 83.51-91.49%) and DIGFA_SH (79.55%, 95%CI: 74.68-84.41%), especially in subgroups with very low infection intensity. The specificity of ELISA_SZ, IHA_JX, DIGFA_SH in 6-9 year olds with occasional exposure was nearly 90%. DIGFA_SH performed the highest screening efficacy for patients among three assays with overall positive predicative value of 13.07% (95%CI: 11.42-14.72%). We found a positive correlation of antibody positive rate of IHA_JX with results of stool examination in age strata (r = 0.70, P<0.001). Seropositivity of IHA_JX in children aged 6-9 years old showed an excellent correlation with prevalence of schistosome infection in the seven communities (r = 0.77, P<0.05). Conclusions/Significance: Studies suggest that ELISA_SZ could be used to guide selective chemotherapy in moderate or low endemic regions. Background: With a national program initiated recently to reduce transmission of Schistosoma japonicum in the People's Republic of China (P.R. China), there is an urgent need for accessible, quality-assured diagnostics for case detection, surveillance, and program monitoring of chemotherapy efficacy and other control interventions in areas of low endemicity. We compared the performance of nine immunodiagnostic tests developed in P.R. China for detection of antibodies against S. japonicum and established their priority for further assessment in field settings. Methodology/Principal Findings: Using the Kato-Katz technique as the reference standard, 240 well-characterized archived serum specimens (100 positive and 140 negative) were evaluated in nine immunological tests developed in P.R. China. The enzyme-linked immunoelectrotransfer blot assay (EITB), which uses an adult worm extract of S. japonicum, supplied by the Center of Disease Control and Prevention, USA, was also evaluated. The sensitivity and specificity of each test were determined and the reproducibility of each test was assessed by evaluating operator-to-operator and run-to-run variation. In addition the simplicity of use for the end-user was evaluated. All tests showed good sensitivities ranging from 92.0% (95% confidence interval (CI): 86.7–97.3%) to 98.0% (95% CI: 95.3–100.0%). The test specificities varied from 70.0% (95% CI: 62.4–77.6%) to 97.1% (95% CI: 94.4–99.9%). All tests showed excellent reproducibility with a discordant rate in the range of 0–10.0% for operator-to-operator variation and run-to-run variation. All tests, except one magnetic particle-based enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, were found to be easy to use, especially the dot immunogold filtration assays. Conclusions/Significance: Most evaluated tests had acceptable performance characteristics and could make an impact on the schistosomiasis control programs in P.R. China. Three tests with the highest sensitivity, specificity and greatest ease of use, were selected for further evaluation in field settings. China. The enzyme-linked immunoelectrotransfer blot assay (EITB), which uses an adult worm extract of S. japonicum, supplied by the Center of Disease Control and Prevention, USA, was also evaluated. The sensitivity and specificity of each test were determined and the reproducibility of each test was assessed by evaluating operator-to-operator and run-to-run variation. In addition the simplicity of use for the end-user was evaluated. All tests showed good sensitivities ranging from 92.0% (95% confidence interval (CI): 86.7-97.3%) to 98.0% (95% CI: 95.3-100.0%). The test specificities varied from 70.0% (95% CI: 62.4- 77.6%) to 97.1% (95% CI: 94.4-99.9%). All tests showed excellent reproducibility with a discordant rate in the range of 0- 10.0% for operator-to-operator variation and run-to-run variation. All tests, except one magnetic particle-based enzymelinked immunosorbent assay, were found to be easy to use, especially the dot immunogold filtration assays. Conclusions/Significance: Most evaluated tests had acceptable performance characteristics and could make an impact on the schistosomiasis control programs in P.R. China. Through analyzing the composition of agricultural water rights transfer price, a pricing model is established based on a two-part model including investment for water-saving and compensation fee. The agricultural water resources value and compensation fee are mainly researched, and the corresponding sub-models are established respectively. Based on the water-saving planning in Dalian, the agricultural water rights transfer price is determined with the model by calculating agricultural water resources value, engineering fee and compensation fee, and the sensitivity analysis is carried out for parameters in the model. The result of case study in Dalian shows that the obtained results are reasonable and the model can be easily used to determine the agricultural water rights transfer price. Recently, the frequent seasonal drought in Southwest China has brought considerable concerns and continuous heated arguments on the "water pump" viewpoint (i.e., the water demand from Hevea spp. and Eucalyptus spp. can be treated as a water pump) once again. However, such viewpoint just focused on water consumption from vegetation transpiration and its ecoenvironment impacts, which had not considered other attributes of vegetation, namely, water saving and drought resistance, and hydrological regulation (water conservation) into consideration. Thus, in this paper, the synthesized attributes of regional vegetation water use had been mainly discussed. The results showed that the study on such aspects as the characters of water consumption from vegetation transpiration, the potential of water saving and drought resistance, and the effects of hydrological regulation in Southwest China lagged far behind, let alone the report on synthesized attributes of water utilization with the organic combination of the three aspects above or the paralleled analysis. Accordingly, in this paper, the study on the synthesized attributes of water use by regional vegetation in Southwest China was suggested, and the objectives of such a special study were clarified, targeting the following aspects: (i) characters of water consumption from transpiration of regional typical artificial vegetation; (ii) potential of water saving and drought resistance of regional typical artificial vegetation; (iii) effects of hydrological regulation of regional typical artificial vegetation; (iv) synthesized attributes of water use by regional typical artificial vegetation. It is expected to provide a new idea for the scientific assessment on the regional vegetation ecoenvironment effects and theoretical guidance for the regional vegetation reconstruction and ecological restoration. To further understand characteristics and functions of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF, FGF-2) as well as its effects on skeletal muscle, a coding sequence of l8kDa-bFGF gene was cloned from Chinese Small Tail Han sheep, an excellent indigenous animal breed in China. The DNA sequence and deduced protein sequence were analyzed and aligned with the counterparts of other published animals. The results indicated that most hallmarks of the newly cloned bFGF gene sequence were found to be similar to those of published species, which implied further that bFGF genes have been conservative in evolution. The complete coding sequence for the gene was inserted into pET-28a plasmid and expressed predicted fusion protein in E. coli. The product was soluble and possessed of biological activity, it is sure to be a good source for further investigation. In addition, effects of the products on proliferation of murine C2C12 myoblasts were investigated. The findings demonstrated that the ovine recombinant bFGF accelerated in vitro the proliferation of murine C2C12 myoblasts, and MEK/ERK-MAPK signaling pathway participated in the regulative mechanism. Abstract: Fossil fuel is running out day by day and wide plantation of energy plants is very promising to solve future energy crisis. However, China has to feed 22% of the world population but occupies less than 10% global arable lands. Therefore exploiting 2,000,000ha of non-agricultural coastal land is imperative. This article shows the category and unbalanced distribution of terrestrial and marine energy plants in the coastal zone, and points out five ways (biodiesel, bioethanol, methane, direct combustion and cell fuel) to utilize them. Also the development and progress made in each way is illustrated. At last, several practical suggestions are offered for the future exploitation of coastal energy plants for the globe. Background and Objectives: The optimal energy intake for early nutrition therapy in critically ill patients is unknown, especially in Chinese patients with a lower BMI. This study investigated the relationship between energy intake and clinical outcomes in this patient population.Methods and Study Design: A retrospective study was carried out at a tertiary hospital. Critically ill patients were recruited and divided into 3 tertiles according to the ratio of actual/target energy intake during the first week of hospitalization in the intensive care unit (ICU) (tertile I, <33.4%; tertile II, 33.4%-66.7%; and tertile III, >66.7%). 60-day mortality and other clinical outcomes were compared. To adjust for potentially confounding factors, multivariate and sensitivity analyses were performed exclusively in patients who stayed in the ICU for ≥7 days.Results: A total of 325 patients with a mean BMI of 22.5±4.7 kg/m2 were recruited. 60-day mortality was similar between the 3 tertiles. In the unadjusted analysis, tertile III had a longer length of stay in the ICU and at the hospital, longer duration of mechanical ventilation, and higher rate of ICU-associated infections, but only the latter showed a significant difference between the 3 tertiles in the multivariate and sensitivity analyses. Logistic regression analysis showed that energy groups was an independent risk factor for ICU-associated infections.Conclusions: Energy intake in early nutrition therapy influences risk of ICU-associated infections in Chinese critically ill patients with lower BMI. Fascioliasis has emerged as a significant public health problem among ruminants and humans. Human fascioliasis is a neglected food-borne parasitic disease, which has emerged or reemerged in more than 60 countries worldwide. In China, the first case of human fascioliasis was reported in 1921 in Fujian Province. The first major outbreak of this parasitic disease in 29 patients occurred in 2012 in Yunnan Province. Nonetheless, the prevalence of fascioliasis in China is probably underestimated due to the poor sensitivity of diagnostic tests, limited epidemiological data, and a poor understanding of the impact of subclinical illness. Coastal mudflat areas are regarded as the important reserve land resource in China. Rational exploitation and development of the mudflat areas can relieve the stress of inadequate land resources. Probing into the developing models of resource exploitation of coastal tidal mudflats is one of the important components of achieving the sustainable development in the coastal areas. Therefore, the development history of coastal mudflats after 1950s in China is briefly introduced in this paper. Then, the status in quo of the modes of development and utilization of coastal mudflat in China the paper is reviewed with a special attention payed to the agricultural use of coastal resource, especially halophytes and improved salt-tolerant varieties planting, agricultural dyke pond and coastal saline-alkali soil remediation. Although schistosomiasis remains a serious health problem worldwide, significant achievements in schistosomiasis control has been made in the People's Republic of China. The disease has been eliminated in five out of 12 endemic provinces, and the prevalence in remaining endemic areas is very low and is heading toward elimination. A rapid and sensitive method for monitoring the distribution of infected Oncomelania hupensis is urgently required. We applied a loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay targeting 28S rDNA for the rapid and effective detection of Schistosoma japonicum DNA in infected and prepatent infected O. hupensis snails. The detection limit of the LAMP method was 100 fg of S. japonicum genomic DNA. To promote the application of the approach in the field, the LAMP assay was used to detect infection in pooled samples of field-collected snails. In the pooled sample detection, snails were collected from 28 endemic areas, and 50 snails from each area were pooled based on the maximum pool size estimation, crushed together and DNA was extracted from each pooled sample as template for the LAMP assay. Based on the formula for detection from pooled samples, the proportion of positive pooled samples and the positive proportion of O. hupensis detected by LAMP of Xima village reached 66.67% and 1.33%, while those of Heini, Hongjia, Yangjiang and Huangshan villages were 33.33% and 0.67%, and those of Tuanzhou and Suliao villages were 16.67% and 0.33%, respectively. The remaining 21 monitoring field sites gave negative results. A risk map for the transmission of schistosomiasis was constructed using ArcMap, based on the positive proportion of O. hupensis infected with S. japonicum , as detected by the LAMP assay, which will form a guide for surveillance and response strategies in high risk areas. The remote sense (RS) technology was adopted to explore the vegetation succession from 1976 to 2014 in Yao’an County, Yunnan Province, Southwest China. The results showed: (i) the changes in the distribution range of major vegetation types in the study area. In the 6 statistic years after 1976, in the study area, the distribution range of the secondary vegetation shrank greatly in 4 different subareas (northeast, southeast, northwest and northwest subarea), at 4 different altitudes (1500–1800 m, 1800–2100 m, 2100–2400 m and 2400–2700 m), on 4 different gradients (0–8°, 8–15°, 15–25°, 25–35°) and on 4 different aspects but the flat land (sunny slope, semi-sunny slope, semi-shadowy slope, and shadowy slope); by contrast, in the study area, the distribution range of artificial vegetation expanded greatly in all the subareas, at 2 different altitudes (1800–2100 m and 2100–2400 m), on 3 different gradients (0–8°, 8–15°, 15–25°), and on the 4 different aspects but the flat land. (ii) The increase and decrease in distribution area of major vegetation types in the study area. During the research period, the total area of major vegetation fluctuated between 1471.92 and 1196.94 km 2 , averaging 1255.52 km 2 annually, with the fluctuation rate between −4.67% and 17.24%. In the second statistic year (1989), the total area of major vegetation decreased sharply, and then remained relatively stable afterward. During the research period, the distribution area of the secondary vegetation decreased sharply in the 6 statistic years after 1976, in contrast to the sharp increase in the distribution area of artificial vegetation in such 6 years. During the research period, the total area of major vegetation decreased by 258.73 km 2 in total, among which the total area of the secondary vegetation decreased by 342.52 km 2 in contrast to the increase in artificial vegetation by 83.78 km 2 in total. Thus, it indicated that the secondary vegetation in the study area had been damaged seriously, and the construction of artificial vegetation lagged behind, so there was a potential danger in ecological safety, which should be concerned and precautioned. The article discusses a study which investigated the safety and immunogenicity of eight formulations of 2009 pandemic influenza A H1N1 vaccine produced by ten Chinese manufacturers. It is noted that 12,691 people aged 3 years or older were involved in the multicentre, double-blind, randomised trial, several of whom received vaccine formulations or placebo. The researchers concluded that one dose of non-adjuvant split-virion vaccine that contains 7.5 microgram haemagglutinin could be used against 2009 pandemic influenza for people aged 12 or older.

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to improve our understanding of the molecular epidemiology of human Blastocystis, focusing on 239 randomly selected individuals in a single village in Yunnan province, China. Emphasis was placed on the relative frequency of different Blastocystis subtypes and underlying risk factors. We used a cross-sectional study design, by employing a pre-tested questionnaire to obtain demographic data and behavioural risk factors, and collected faecal samples for culture and subsequent identification of Blastocystis. DNA was extracted from Blastocystis isolates and the subtypes were identified using 7 subtype-specific sequenced-tagged site (STS) primers. Overall, 78 faecal samples were Blastocystis culture-positive (32.6%, 95% confidence interval: 26.7–38.6%). The majority (n =73, 93.6%) were single infections with one of the known subtypes, whereas 2 isolates consisted of 2 concurrent subtypes. The remaining 3 isolates could not be identified with the currently known STS primers. Risk factors for a Blastocystis infection were drinking unboiled water, consumption of raw water plants and pig ownership. The consumption of raw water plants was positively associated with subtype 1 infections, and drinking unboiled water with subtype 3 infections. In conclusion, human Blastocystis was common in this village in southwest China, and different subtypes were associated with distinct transmission routes or sources of infection, and hence Blastocystis subtypes might be linked to specific environmental compartments. Abstract: Pharmaceutical counterfeiting is becoming a serious problem in the world, especially in developing countries including China. Herein an isocratic reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) method was developed for screening counterfeit medicines and adulterated dietary supplement products. The developed method could be employed to separate and determine simultaneously six anti-diabetic drugs (glipizide, gliclazide, glibenclamide, glimepiride, gliquidone, repaglinide) on an isocratic solvent system using an Alltima C18 column (5μm, 150mm×4.6mm) with an isocratic mobile phase of methanol–phosphate buffer (pH 3.0; 0.01mol/L) (70:30, v/v), at a flow rate of 1.0mL/min and at a wavelength of 230nm. Objectives: An increase in the incidence of congenital hypothyroidism (CH) with eutopic gland has been reported worldwide due to neonatal screening programs. In this study, we aimed to determine the prevalence of transient CH (TCH) and to investigate predictive factors that could distinguish between permanent and transient CH in patients with eutopic thyroid glands., Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 508 children treated for CH with eutopic thyroid glands between June 1998 and June 2020 in Jiangxi Newborn Screening Center. All patients were treated with levothyroxine and underwent Diagnostic re-evaluation after 2-3 years of age. Patients were classified as having TCH or permanent CH (PCH) during follow-up., Results: Of the 508 patients initially treated for CH with a normally located gland, 335 patients (65.9%) were classified in the TCH group and 173 (34.1%) in the PCH group based on the defined criteria. Multivariate analysis revealed that TCH was associated with a lower levothyroxine dose at 24 months of age (p<0.001) and a lower likelihood of having a first-degree family history of CH (p=0.026) than PCH. Gender, prematurity, low birth weight, initial CH severity such as serum TSH and FT4 levels, or bone maturation delay at diagnosis had no effect. Receiver operating characteristics curve analysis showed that a cutoff of 2.3 μg/kg/day for levothyroxine dose requirement at 24 months of age had a sensitivity of 71% and a specificity of 70% for predicting transient CH, with values below this threshold considered predictive of transient CH., Conclusions: TCH presents a significant portion of patients with CH. Background: Tick-borne bacteria and protozoa can cause a variety of human and animal diseases in China. It is of great importance to monitor the prevalence and dynamic variation of these pathogens in ticks in ever-changing natural and social environment. Materials and Methods: Ticks were collected from Heilongjiang and Jilin provinces of northeastern China during 2018-2019 followed by morphological identification. The presence of Rickettsia spp., Anaplasma spp., Ehrlichia spp., Borrelia spp., Babesia spp., and Theileria spp. was examined by PCR and Sanger sequencing. The obtained sequences were subjected to phylogenetic analysis through Mega 7.0. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 24.0. Results: A total of 250 ticks from 5 species of 3 genera were collected. Ixodes and Haemaphysalis ticks carried more species of pathogens than Dermacentor , and the pathogens detected in Haemaphysalis japonica varied significantly among different sampling sites. The infection rates of Rickettsia spp., Anaplasma spp., Ehrlichia spp., Borrelia spp., Babesia spp., and Theileria spp. were 41.2%, 0, 2.0%, 7.2%, 1.2%, and 7.2%, respectively. Twelve pathogens were identified, among which Rickettsia raoultii (29.6%), Candidatus Rickettsia tarasevichiae (9.2%), and Theileria equi (4.4%) were the three most common ones. Rickettsia had its dominant vector, that is, R. raoultii had high infection rates in Dermacentor nuttalli and Dermacentor silvarum , Ca. R. tarasevichiae in Ixodes persulcatus , and Rickettsia heilongjiangensis in H. japonica . Interestingly, unclassified species were observed, including a Rickettsia sp., an Ehrlichia sp., a Borrelia sp., and a Babesia sp. Coinfections with different pathogens were identified in 9.2% of all tested ticks, with I. persulcatus most likely to be coinfected (23.8%) and Rickettsia spp. and Borrelia spp. as the most common combination (16.7%). Conclusions: The results of this study reflect high diversity and complexity of pathogens in ticks, which are useful for designing more targeted and effective control measures for tick-borne diseases in China.

Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of CYP2C19 loss-of-function(LOF) allele-guided antiplatelet therapy compared with the universal use of clopidogrel or ticagrelor among Chinese patients with acute coronary syndrome undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention. Methods: A two-part cost-effectiveness model comprising of a 1-year decision tree and a long-term Markov model was utilized to simulate outcomes of three treatment strategies: universal use of clopidogrel (75 mg daily) or universal use of ticagrelor 90 mg twice daily for all patients and CYP2C19 LOF-guided therapy (LOF allele carriers receiving ticagrelor, LOF allele noncarriers receiving clopidogrel). Model outcomes included quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) gained, direct medical costs and incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs). ICERs less than one-time gross domestic product per capita in China 59,660 yuan/QALY were considered cost-effective. Results: Base-case analysis showed 'universal ticagrelor use' was cost-effective for an ICER of 33,875 yuan per QALY gained compared with 'universal clopidogrel use' of which gained a 1.6932 QALYs at lowest life-long cost of 2450 yuan. CYP2C19 LOF-guided therapy had an effectiveness of 1.6975 QALYs at a cost of 2812 yuan, for an ICER of 84,118 yuan per QALY gained relative to 'universal clopidogrel use'. Sensitivity analysis demonstrated that base-case results were significantly affected by five factors: the risk ratio of 'non-fatal myocardial infarction', 'non-fatal stroke' and 'cardiovascular death' in ticagrelor versus clopidogrel and the annual costs of clopidogrel and ticagrelor. According to the results of Monte Carlo simulation, when willing to pay is about 32,000 yuan, patients willing to receive clopidogrel or ticagrelor are approximately equal. Conclusion: Optimal antiplatelet treatment is affected by lots of factors. The results of our study demonstrated that 'universal ticagrelor use' was cost-effective compared with 'universal clopidogrel use' for Chinese acute coronary syndrome patients with percutaneous coronary intervention.

The National Parasitic Resource Center (NPRC) was created in 2004. It is a first-level platform under the Basic Condition Platform Center of the Ministry of Science and Technology of China. The resource centre involves 21 depository institutions in 15 regions of the country, including human parasite and vector depository, animal parasite depository, plant nematode characteristic specimen library, medical insect characteristic specimen library, trematode model specimen library, parasite-vector/snail model specimen library, etc. After nearly 15 years of operation, the resource centre has been built into a physical library with a database of 11 phyla, 23 classes, 1115 species and 117,814 pieces of parasitic germplasm resources, and three live collection bases of parasitic germplasm resources. A variety of new parasite-related immunological and molecular biological detection and identification technologies produced by the resource centre are widely used in the fields of public health responses, risk assessments on food safety, and animal or plant quarantine. Background and Objectives: The optimal energy intake for early nutrition therapy in critically ill patients is unknown, especially in Chinese patients with a lower BMI. This study investigated the relationship between energy intake and clinical outcomes in this patient population., Methods and Study Design: A retrospective study was carried out at a tertiary hospital. Critically ill patients were recruited and divided into 3 tertiles according to the ratio of actual/target energy intake during the first week of hospitalization in the intensive care unit (ICU) (tertile I, <33.4%; tertile II, 33.4%-66.7%; and tertile III, >66.7%). 60-day mortality and other clinical outcomes were compared. To adjust for potentially confounding factors, multivariate and sensitivity analyses were performed exclusively in patients who stayed in the ICU for ≥7 days., Results: A total of 325 patients with a mean BMI of 22.5±4.7 kg/m2 were recruited. 60-day mortality was similar between the 3 tertiles. In the unadjusted analysis, tertile III had a longer length of stay in the ICU and at the hospital, longer duration of mechanical ventilation, and higher rate of ICU-associated infections, but only the latter showed a significant difference between the 3 tertiles in the multivariate and sensitivity analyses. Logistic regression analysis showed that energy groups was an independent risk factor for ICU-associated infections., Conclusions: Energy intake in early nutrition therapy influences risk of ICU-associated infections in Chinese critically ill patients with lower BMI. Furthermore, patients with near-target energy intake have more frequent ICU-associated infections.

Background: Bacterial diarrhea is one of the most common causes for medical consultations, mortality and morbidity in the world. Diarrheagenic Escherichia coli (DEC) and non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) are major intestinal pathogens in developing countries, and the indiscriminate use of antibiotics has greatly contributed to resistant strains. Hence, the aim of the present study is to identify the antimicrobial resistance patterns and the molecular characteristics of DEC and NTS in southwest, China., Methods: 1121 diarrheal patients and 319 non-diarrheal subjects across all age groups were recruited from four sentinel hospitals from June 2014 to July 2015 in Kunming City, Yunnan Province. Each stool specimen was collected to detect DEC and NTS with standard microbiological and molecular methods. Antimicrobial resistance testing was performed with the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method, and the standards for antimicrobial susceptibility testing complied with the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI). Molecular characterization of strains was carried out using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). A structured questionnaire was used to record basic epidemiological data (e.g. sex, age, residence, season, etc.). Data were analyzed using Chi-square or Fisher's exact test., Results: DEC was detected in 127 (11.33%) diarrhea cases and 9 (2.82%) non-diarrheal cases (χ 2  = 20.69, P < 0.001, OR = 4.36, 95% CI: 2.19-8.65), and the prevalence of NTS isolated from diarrhea cases was higher than that of non-diarrheal cases across all age groups (n = 42, 3.75%, n = 1, 0.31%, χ 2  = 10.10, P = 0.002, OR = 12.38, 95% CI: 1.70-90.29). The rates of resistance to ten antibiotics of DEC and NTS showed significant differences (χ 2  = 386.77, P < 0.001; χ 2  = 191.16, P < 0.001). The rates of resistance to Amoxicillin and Clavulafiate (AMC), Cephalothin (CEP), Gentamicin (GEN) and Sulfamethoxazole-Trimethoprim (SXT) of DEC isolated from diarrhea cases were higher than those of NTS isolated from diarrhea patients (37.01% vs 14.29%, χ 2  = 7.57, P = 0.006; 29.92% vs 11.90%, χ 2  = 5.40, P = 0.02; 37.01% vs 11.90%, χ 2  = 5.80, P = 0.016; 62.20% vs 26.19%, χ 2  = 16.44, P < 0.001; respectively). Ciprofloxacin (CIP) was the most sensitive antibiotic for DEC and NTS strains isolated from diarrhea cases. Resistance rates of DEC isolates from cases and controls to more than three kinds antimicrobials (multidrug resistance, MDR) showed no significant differences (81.10% vs 88.89%, P = 0.33). Pulsotype patterns of DEC strains were highly diverse; however, the pulsotype pattern of NTS strains was closely related to the serotype. The pattern of S. enteritidis was highly similar, but the S. enterica Typhimurium strain was discrete., Conclusions: Antibiotic resistance of Enterobacteriaceae is of great concern. The societal effects of antibiotic use justify strict monitoring to combat increases in antimicrobial resistance. Molecular epidemiology and systematic epidemiological investigation can provide accurate evidence for tracking the infection source.

Aims: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) mainly results from autosomal-dominant inherited single heterozygous mutations in cardiac sarcomere genes. Contributions of multiple gene mutations to disease heterogeneity in a three-generation family were investigated., Methods: Clinical, electrocardiographic (ECG), and echocardiographic examination in members of a three-generation Chinese family was followed by exon and boarding intron analysis of 96 genes in the proband using second-generation sequencing. The identified mutations were confirmed by bi-directional Sanger sequencing in all family members and 300 healthy controls., Results: Four missense mutations were detected in the family. These were two novel MYH7-H1717Q and MYLK2-K324E mutations accompanied by the KCNQ1-R190W and TMEM70-I147T mutations. The proband carried all four mutations and showed overlapping HCM and LQT1 phenotypes. Five family members each carried two mutations. Subject II-2 only carried TMEM70-I147T. MYH7-H1717Q and TMEM70-I147T came from the paternal side, whereas KCNQ1-R190W and MYLK2-K324E came from the maternal side. Left ventricle mass indices in MYH7-H1717Q carriers were significantly higher than in non-H1717Q carriers (90.05 ± 7.33 g/m(2), 63.20 ± 4.53 g/m(2), respectively, P < 0.01). Four KCNQ1-R190W carriers showed QTc intervals that were significantly more prolonged than those in non-R190W carriers (472.25 ± 16.18 and 408.50 ± 7.66 ms, respectively, P < 0.05). All MYLK2-K324E carriers showed inverted ECG T waves. The subject with only a TMEM70-I147T mutation showed normal ECG and echocardiographs, suggesting that this had less pathological effects at least in this family., Conclusions: We demonstrate dual LQT1 and HCM phenotypes in this multiple LQT1- and HCM-related gene mutation carrier family for the first time and suggest that LQT-related gene mutations associate with QT interval prolongation and/or arrhythmia in HCM patients., (Published on behalf of the European Society of Cardiology. Background: The shifts to second-line chemotherapy for metastatic breast cancer (MBC) were widely required based on pharmaceutical molecular profiles to reach out precision medicine. The emerging precise treatment of cancer requires the implementation of clarified pharmacogenetic profiles which are capable of elucidating the predictive responses to cancer chemotherapy. Therefore we were interested in the analysis of the roles of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) of GSTP1 (glutathione S-transferase pi 1 gene) alleles to identify pharmacological links with predictors of clinical responses and toxicities., Methods: 93 MBC patients receiving thiotepa plus docetaxel chemotherapy were enrolled in this study. Optimized CYP3A5, CYP2B6, and GSTP1 were predominantly selected as candidate genes and their three SNPs (CYP2B6 G516T, CYP3A5 A6986G, and GSTP1 A313G) were genotyped by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization/time of flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry. Progression-free survival (PFS), disease control rate, and chemo-related toxicities were recorded., Results: GSTP1 A313G (rs1695) was identified to be related with disease progression. In particular, patients harboring AG/GG genotype demonstrated a statistically longer PFS than those with AA. Multivariate analysis confirmed that AG/GG genotype was associated with both clinical responses and liver-localized metastatic lesions. No correlation was found between these three SNPs and chemotherapy-induced toxicity., Conclusions: These results suggest that the GSTP1 polymorphism is a novel prognostic marker for clinical response to thiotepa-containing chemotherapy regimens. Such evidence could provide insight into the role of pharmacogenetics to deprive of biases in shifting regimens solely by empirical choices.

A novel Pseudoalteromonas marina bacteriophage, PH101, specifically infecting Pseudoalteromonas BH101 was isolated from the water sample of the Yellow Sea of China using the agar overlay method. 16S rDNA sequence identification was used to identify the host bacteria. Efficiency of infection, multiplicity of infection value, morphological characterization, one-step growth curve, and host range of the bacteriophage were determined. Purified PH101 genomic DNA was extracted and its genome was completely sequenced and analyzed. The phage morphology showed that PH101 belongs to the Myoviridae family with a head of 60 nm in diameter and a tail of 40 nm with a tail fiber of 10-20 nm. Microbiological characterization demonstrated that phage PH101 is stable at a wide range of temperatures (0-70 °C) and showed acid and alkaline resistance (pH 3-12). The one-step growth curve showed a latent period of about 20 min, a rise period of 20 min, and a burst size of about 31.6 virions. The genome sequencing and bioinformatic analysis shows that phage PH101 was a novel bacteriophage which was found to consist of a linear, double-stranded 131,903-bp DNA molecule with a GC content of 37.36 % and 228 putative open reading frames without RNA, which were classified into seven functional groups, including phage structure, adsorption, packaging, gene transfer protease, terminase, DNA binding, and regulation.

Aim: To evaluate long-term outcomes of radiofrequency (RF) ablation as first-line therapy for single hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) ≤ 3 cm and to determine survival and prognostic factors., Methods: We included all 184 patients who underwent RF ablation as a first-line treatment for single HCC ≤ 3 cm between April 2005 and December 2013. According to the criteria of Livraghi, the 184 patients were divided into two groups: those suitable for surgical resection (84 cases) and those unsuitable for surgical resection (100 cases). The primary endpoints were the overall survival (OS) rate and safety; the secondary endpoints were primary technique effectiveness and recurrence rate., Results: There were 19 (10.3%) cases of ablation related minor complications. The complete tumor ablation rate after one RF session was 97.8% (180/184). The rate of local tumor progression, extrahepatic metastases and intrahepatic distant recurrence were 4.9% (9/184), 9.8% (18/184) and 37.5% (69/184), respectively. In the 184 patients, the 1-, 3-, and 5-year OS rates were 99.5%, 81.0%, and 62.5%, respectively. The 1-, 3-, and 5-year OS rates were 100%, 86.9%, and 71.4%, respectively, in those suitable for surgical resection and 99.0%, 76.0%, and 55.0%, respectively, in those unsuitable for surgical resection (P = 0.021). On univariate and multivariate analyses, poorer OS was associated with Child-Pugh B class and portal hypertension (P < 0.05)., Conclusion: RF ablation is a safe and effective treatment for single HCC ≤ 3 cm. The OS rate of patients suitable for surgical resection was similar to those reported in surgical series.

The reported effects of the glutathione S-transferase (GSTs) genes (GSTM1, GSTT1, and GSTP1) on male factor infertility have been inconsistent and even contradictory. Here, we conducted a case-control study to investigate the association between functionally important polymorphisms in GST genes and idiopathic male infertility. The study group consisted of 361 men with idiopathic azoospermia, 118 men with idiopathic oligospermia, and 234 age-matched healthy fertile male controls. Genomic DNA was extracted from the peripheral blood, and analyzed by polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis. There was a significant association between the GSTP1 variant genotype (Ile/Val + Val/Val) with idiopathic infertility risk (odds ratio [OR]: 1.53; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.11-2.11; P = 0.009). Similarly, a higher risk of infertility was noted in individuals carrying a genotype combination of GSTT1-null and GSTP1 (Ile/Val + Val/Val) (OR: 2.17; 95% CI: 1.43-3.31; P = 0.0002). These results suggest an increased risk of the GSTP1 variant genotype (Ile/Val + Val/Val) for developing male factor infertility. Our findings also underrate the significance of the effect of GSTM1 and/or GSTT1 (especially the former) in modulating the risk of male infertility in males from Sichuan, Southwest China.

Background: Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) has the highest mortality rates in China. The 5-year survival rate of ESCC remains dismal despite improvements in treatments such as surgical resection and adjuvant chemoradiation, and current clinical staging approaches are limited in their ability to effectively stratify patients for treatment options. The aim of the present study, therefore, was to develop an immunohistochemistry-based prognostic model to improve clinical risk assessment for patients with ESCC., Methods: We developed a molecular prognostic model based on the combined expression of axis of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), phosphorylated Specificity protein 1 (p-Sp1), and Fascin proteins. The presence of this prognostic model and associated clinical outcomes were analyzed for 130 formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded esophageal curative resection specimens (generation dataset) and validated using an independent cohort of 185 specimens (validation dataset)., Results: The expression of these three genes at the protein level was used to build a molecular prognostic model that was highly predictive of ESCC survival in both generation and validation datasets (P = 0.001). Regression analysis showed that this molecular prognostic model was strongly and independently predictive of overall survival (hazard ratio = 2.358 [95% CI, 1.391-3.996], P = 0.001 in generation dataset; hazard ratio = 1.990 [95% CI, 1.256-3.154], P = 0.003 in validation dataset). Furthermore, the predictive ability of these 3 biomarkers in combination was more robust than that of each individual biomarker., Conclusions: This technically simple immunohistochemistry-based molecular model accurately predicts ESCC patient survival and thus could serve as a complement to current clinical risk stratification approaches.

A survey of the prevalence rate, pathogenic subspecies, and risk factors of mycotic mastitis in dairy cows from Heilongjiang Province, China, was conducted. Milk samples from 412 cows with chronic mastitis were collected and cultured on 8 % sheep blood agar, MacConkey agar, and Sabouraud agar with chloramphenicol. Counting of the morphologically distinct colonies was performed, as well as the isolation and identification of organisms through phenotypical and physiological criteria. Four hundred seventy-eight aerobic microorganisms were isolated. Yeasts and yeast-like fungi 35.6 % (170/478) and bacteria 64.4 % (308/478) were isolated. The fungal isolates were identified as Candida (79.4 %), Trichosporon (5.9 %), Aspergillus (7.1 %), Cryptococcus (2.4 %), and Rhodotorula (4.1 %). More than ten species of yeast were isolated including Candida krusei 50/135 (37 %), Candida rugosa 16/135 (11.9 %), and Candida lusitaniae 15/135 (11.1 %). A higher positivity (18.5 and 56.3 %) (P ≤0.05) was observed in cows from environmental temperatures of 0-15 and 15-35 °C than those at <0 °C and in cows affected by the disease for >45 and 30-45 days compared with cows suffering 10-30 days. Meanwhile, a statistically significant difference (44.9 vs. 31.4 %) (P ≤0.05) was observed under extensive raising systems vs. intensive raising systems. It appears that Candida is a major pathogen of mycotic mastitis of dairy cows. Extensive raising system, high environmental temperature (15-35 °C), and the duration of the disease (>30 days) were important risk factors of the incidence of mycotic mastitis. Here, we provide a theoretical foundation for research into preventing and treating mycotic mastitis of dairy cows in China.

To study the pathogenic spectrum of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) and the molecular characterizations of human enteroviruses 71 (HEV71) isolated from the clinical specimens of HFMD patients in Inner Mongolia in 2010. A total of 921 clinical specimens including stools and throat swabs were collected from HFMD patients in outpatient service in Inner Mongolia and then viral isolation was performed, the positive viral isolates were identified by using the real-time PCR method (detecting EV, HEV71 and CVA16 in a single tube), and VP4 and VP1 coding region amplification and sequencing was performed with the viral isolates that were identified as non-HEV71, non-CVA16 HEVs. A total of 153 viruses were isolated form 921 clinical specimens, the positive rate was 16.61%, of which 61 (39.87%) were HEV71, 82 (53.59%) were CVA16, 7 (6.53%) were other HEVs(6 were CVB4 and 1 was polio vaccine virus type II) and 3 (1.96%) were adenoviruses. Nine viruses were isolated from severe cases, of which 6 were HEV71 and 3 were CVA16. Thirty two HEV71 isolates were selected from the patients presenting mild symptoms and the patients presenting severe symptoms randomly, and the VP1 coding regions of represented HEV71 isolates were amplified and sequenced. Finally the phylogenetic tree was constructed among the VP1 coding regions of the different genotypes and subgenotypes of HEV71 strains. The nucleotide acid and amino acid of 32 represented HEV71 strains in Inner Mongolia were closed to HEV71 strains isolated from mainland China since 2007, especially from Beijing in 2008, and it showed that all HEV71 strains clustered within the C4a evolution branch of C4 subgenotype. There was slight difference in the nucleotide and the amino acid sequence in VP1 region among the 32 Inner Mongolia HEV71 strains, the identity were 96.4%-100% and 98.14%-100%, respectively, and there was a little difference in the nucleotide acid sequence between the HEV71 strains from Inner Mongolia in 2010 and in 2007, the identity was from 96.95% to 97.87%. Thirty two HEV71 strains were in different lineages in the phylogenetic tree, and it indicated that these strains belonged to many different viral transmission chains. HEV71 and CVA16 were the main pathogens of HFMD in Inner Mongolia in 2010 and most severe cases were caused by HEV71. All the HEV71 strains circulated in Inner Mongolia belonged to C4a evolution branch within C4 subgenotype. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that 2010 Inner Mongolia HEV71 strains were located in different lineages, and had more nucleotide identity with 2008 Beijing HEV71 strains than with 2007 Inner Mongolia HEV71 strains. This indicated that Inner Mongolia HEV71 strains had not evolved independently, but co-evolved with the HEV71 strains in other provinces in mainland China.

Objective: To evaluate the effect of 3 ELISA kits on detection of human fasciolasis., Methods: Twenty-six serum samples from patients with fasciolasis, 180 serum samples from patients with other parasitic diseases as well as 26 serum samples from healthy people were detected by ELISA kits which using soluble antigen of Fasciola gigantica, Fasciola hepatica (Fg-ELISA and Fh-ELISA) as well as IgG antigen ELISA detection kits made by DRG company in Germany. The effects of the 3 kits were evaluated., Results: The sensitivities of Fg-ELISA, Fh-ELISA, and DRG-ELISA were 100.0%, 80.8% (95% CI: 65.7%-95.9%) and 100.0%, respectively; the specificities of the three were 87.9% (95% CI: 83.5%-92.4%), 85.0%(95% CI: 80.1%-89.9%) and 83.5% (95% CI: 78.4%-88.6%), respectively, and Youden indexes of them were 0.88, 0.66 and 0.84, respectively. The detection rate of Fg-ELISA (100%) was significantly higher than that of Fh-ELISA (80.8%) (P < 0.05). The A absolute value (A/CO) of Fg-ELISA was 1.70, which was also significantly higher than the value of Fh-ELISA (1.18) (P < 0.000 1)., Conclusion: Fg-ELISA has a good detection effect and low cost, and is more suitable than Fh-ELISA and DRG-ELISA for clinical sample tests as well as massive screening in fasciolasis endemic areas in southwest China.
